UPDATE: Cover art and Lyrics for the “Last Goodbye” from DavidCookOfficial

The Hollywood Reporter confirms David Cook will sing his new single, the Ryan Tedder co-write “The Last Goodbye” on next week’s American Idol results show, airing April 21 on FOX.

  • Read the interview HERE.

THR sat down with David to talk with David about his new album (pushed back til June), recording “Don’t You Forget About Me” as the Idol farewell song, writing and recording his upcoming album, and more.

The song he wrote with bandmates Neil Tiemann and Andy Skib, “Goodbye to the Girl” was written at his home studio in his Pjs!

On shooting the album cover:

I think visually we had more time with this record and so we were able to create more of a sonic landscape across the board. I wanted the visual aspects of this record to emphasize that. This record’s a bit more intricate. The last one everything happened so quickly — I think it was four and a half months from start to finish — so you try to conceptualize on the fly. But this time, we could really form ideas. We played a little bit more with natural lighting as far as the photography was concerned. The album art was shot by Lauren Dukoff who did Adele’s new record. She’s just incredible. What she’s able to do with natural light is mind-blowing to me. It really created a mood.

The new single “The Last Goodbye” is set to be released April 19.

    Interesting.

  • Valentin432

Great news, can’t wait to listen to the new DC music.

  • pattycake

I cannot wait for the record. There is nothing really new here except I’m comfortable putting my name on and can make a living for me or any future family that I might have, I’m good.
    Babies on the mind?

  • fadetowhite

It’s just great to hear him talk about it and -hopefully! – get some definite dates, that aren’t going to change yet again.

And know that the Idol performance is going to see the PR launch for the album (again hopefully!).

I love his explanations for why the album took longer than expected – it certainly seems to have been down to artistic vision (allowing for a certain degree of Cookian diplomacy of course).

But he certainly sounds content with what he’s achieved.

And definitely am intruiged by the visual side of the album.

And like the answer about taking criticism and being happy making music that is right for him and hopefully making enough of a living from it.

Next week it should all kick off – and I reckon we’re all more than ready!

  • sma11ie

    FLAILING!

So much info in that fantastic interview. I’m beyond intrigued about the record based on his answers. Shirley is such a lucky b-tch, lol. I mean that affectionately—she gets all the exclusives, but with such great questions, I ain’t complaining! I’m not surprised we didn’t get a firm date, but I wish we got a hint at the album title though! LOL at the flannel PJs with the flying cheeseburgers. I love his answers to questions about pressures, etc. cuz he’s got such a good head on his shoulders. I know this calm will last but for a moment, because angsting is my nature, but I am just happy to hear that no matter what happens commercially, he’s happy with the record he made. That’s gotta feel good.

  • Eyeswideshut2

The photographer does some pretty amazing work – http://bit.ly/5Yos3j
    *bounces in anticipation*

ETA: The bouncing is more for this part “Lyrically, musically, emotionally, this record is open. There’s some fresh wound moments, for sure. ”

    Loooooooove me some Angsty Dave.

Though of course great cover art will be pretty cool too :-)

  • _nyanyanie

im so freaking ready next week! :)

“very long labor of love” made me smile… he knows us… :)

thanks to simon fuller again, DYFAM somehow hold down the fans from further angst… it calmed us down for like a month or so… good job ya’ll & neal helped with the guitar for that?? cool!! cool!! cool!!

  • tinawina

That was a great interview! Shirley knows her stuff.

He sounds like he’s in a good place. I can’t wait to hear it.

  • pattycake

I just noticed he used plural when referring to band cowrites have those songs stand up against all the other stuff .
Perhaps there are other band cowrites that made the cut?

  • IndyMuse

Wow, MJ, that was fast getting this thread up! Thanks! I imagined a few minutes ago I might be first to bring it over. Heh.

  • sma11ie

I just noticed he used plural when referring to band cowrites have those songs stand up against all the other stuff . Perhaps Goodbye to the girl isn’t the only one that made the cut??

But Shirley’s question is posed as “One of the songs”… and then David talks about GTTG, which leads me to think that was the only one. I’d love to hear With Me Empty (he talked about it in the EW Slezak interview over a year ago!), but I don’t think it sounds like more than one made the record. Maybe he just misspoke? But I sure hope you’re right.

  • Eyeswideshut2

    Oooh! Nice catch, pattycake!

  • Trina

Kinda bummed Claude Kelly’s name hasn’t been mentioned in a long time. The stuff he did with him I’ve been the most anxious about it so I hope at least one song made the cut.

Very intrigued by the album artwork. Not only is Adele’s artwork gorgeous but she did some interesting Lady Gaga stuff.

  • pattycake

I must say I could have gone without the cheeseburger pj part. He kinda went from being a hot word nerd to just a nerd. haha. No worries, one new pic and I will be back. :)

  • sma11ie

I must say I could have gone without the cheeseburger pj part. He kinda went from being a hot word nerd to just a nerd. haha. No worries, one new pic and I will be back

I think that’s exactly why he says stuff like that. He’s not comfortable with the hot rockstar stuff, so he diverts attention. I’ll never forget right after the win, when Kim Caldwell interviewed him for the TVGuide channel about being a hearthrob and whatnot, he chose to tell a story about being so nervous he had stagehands blowdrying his armpits the first night of Idol. Mind you, he said this to the girl he was trying to hit on. As he said then, “I keeps it real”.

Kinda bummed Claude Kelly’s name hasn’t been mentioned in a long time.

Me too. I hope one made it. Also interesting that Zac Maloy wasn’t mentioned. For someone whose presence was so prevalent in DCTR, interesting if he’s not on this one at all.

FYI, he only referred to PJ pants. Which ….. um, yeah. *fans self*

  • unidentified

That was a nice interview. Lots of good stuff to look forward to. Really looking forward to next week.

  • Keel

    cheeseburgah! cheeseburgah!

Love the interview. I am officially in flail mode. New Cook music is just right around the corner!!! Eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!

  • _nyanyanie

can they put a tiny hole on the wall of secrecy for bit, i wanna hear it now, stream it (ed!)…

waiting for next thursday will be an agony… er wait, on tuesday~itunes… the anticipation during the weekend will kill me…

  • tierbee

OK, I am officially excited now. Fastening seatbelt, sweeping out bunker.

I LOVE when Shirley interviews him, she does a great job and seems to really get him talking.

I think that’s exactly why he says stuff like that. He’s not comfortable with the hot rockstar stuff, so he diverts attention.

Haha, yeah, I think he does that, too. Why I find it so endearing, I don’t know. Just do. Mr. Cheeseburger PJs. I’m not even thinking in any sort of, um, lustful way – it seriously is making me giggle thinking about CookieNeutron-on-’roids morning hair combo with cheeseburger PJs.

  • SharB

just imagine the huge smile when I thought about pj pants and nothing else (oooooo) teehee. H*ll yes I’m ready for next week. Bummed the release is pushed back til June. What’s a girl gonna do without some DC music? Patience is certainly not a virtue here. I’m ready willing and anxiously waiting…….it’s gonna be so good. I know he won’t disappoint us. Rambling over now.

  • tinawina

OK, I am officially excited now. Fastening seatbelt, sweeping out bunker.

    It’s time!

Mr. Cheeseburger PJs. I’m not even thinking in any sort of, um, lustful way – it seriously is making me giggle thinking about CookieNeutron-on-’roids morning hair combo with cheeseburger PJs.

I will never be able to hear that song without thinking on flying cheeseburger pajamas. I think we have our first source of jokes for this new album cycle. :D

  • fadetowhite

Ummmmm…RCA Ed is apparently preparing to divulge some more ‘sugar’ (whatever that means!) on DCO imminently (or at least ‘soon’; which hopefully means today and not some time in the next month or so)…ETA: in ‘just a few minutes’ apparently.

    Waiting…

  • jumpstart

^^ I’m supposed to be working. Oh well. :)

  • SharB

    me too jumpstart!!!!!!!!

  • _nyanyanie

everyone on my timeline is flailing ! exciting…. :)

  • jumpstart

I believe Ed enjoys torturing us.

  • fadetowhite

A few minutes on the Cook release timetable could easily equal a few hours or a few days…

It’d better be sugar worth waiting for, that’s all…:lol

  • jumpstart

Ack, it’s like waiting for Santa Claus to come down the freakin’ chimney!

ETA: ***patience is a virtue*** … ***patience is a virtue***…***patience is a virtue***

  • _nyanyanie

i should be doing something else but i can’t get away from the computer…. sigh…

  • Cate

“Goodbye to the Girl” should have been the boot song!

  • Keel

Ha! Since I had nothing else to do while constantly refreshing DCO for whatever this “sugar” (ugh, what a stupid term) is, I decided to finally do my various donations to Race for Hope. I’m cracking up at the DC picture on that site. Because if you really want to see a contrast between his hair in the Scream 4 premiere (very thick!) versus the fuzzy hair from a hatchling in this pic (http://tinyurl.com/2359sko), it couldn’t be more clear. Haha. Ya know I luv u Cook :)

  • fadetowhite

“Goodbye to the Girl” should have been the boot song!

    :lol – Now that’s funny!

Ed – You are risking full on internet breakdown here. Don’t promise ‘sugar’ in a few minutes if you can’t deliver in ‘a few minutes’ if you know what’s good for you.

You don’t think he was making a joke do you?

  • leome

“Goodbye to the Girl” should have been the boot song!

    LOL for sure.
Appropriate title for a season where boys don’t go home.

I don’t know what to take from the part about the cowrites with Neal and Andy. If that’s the only one or if there will be more.

  • tinawina

I’m cracking up at the DC picture on that site. Because if you really want to see a contrast between his hair in the Scream 4 premiere (very thick!) versus the fuzzy hair from a hatchling in this pic (http://tinyurl.com/2359sko), it couldn’t be more clear. Haha. Ya know I luv u Cook :)

Okay, we have dorky pjs and hairplug jokes to make now. LOL.

Oh RCA Ed. As soon as I leave. you will drop the bomb won’t you? Boo.

  • pattycake

While waiting for “sugar” from the wall of silence, I see that the typical Cook timline is similar to ancient Roman history.
167 BC: At the end of the Third Macedonian War the romans divide Macedonia into offical Cooktards.
    149 BC: Roma attacks Carthage
149 BC: Roma conquers Greece after winning the battle of Corinth (and destroying Corinth)
144 BC: The first high-level aqueduct is built

  • sma11ie

“Goodbye to the Girl” should have been the boot song!

    LOL for sure.
Appropriate title for a season where boys don’t go home.

LOL. Maybe Goodbye to the Girl is about PIA! Heh, I kid I kid.

OMG, what is this sugar from RCA Ed?! I feel sick, I feel nervous… forreals!

  • Eyeswideshut2
  • BootStar

I was LMAO when he made that comment about shaving all his hair off for the album cover. I think it’s pretty clear he went the “other route.” He really does try to make his fans happy. ;-)

SO nervous about this song. PLEASE GOD, LET IT BE GOOD!

  • leome

So now we have lyrics and single art.
I haven’t read the lyrics yet but I’m liking the single art, very cute and handsome and nice visual all around. At least at first quick glance.

  • BootStar

    Tee-hee

ROTFLMAO. He has more sets of jammies than Allison Dubois on Medium!

  • sma11ie

Omg! Is that the art for the single? If the album cover is along the same lines stylistically, I will like it! Love the colors so much I’ll forgive the pinkish shirt lol.

I’m digging the lyrics too ;).

Wait, accidentally refreshed and it’s gone! LOL, oh DCO…

  • consumedbywords
  • IndyMuse

It’s there! I saw it! Full lyrics to TLG and the cover for the single. The lyrics in the verses are signature David poetry. Awesome photo, too.

  • pattycake

OMG its very 70′s potheadish??? I don’t get it.I don’t think I like. Maybe I would prefer the cheeseburger attire.
    But I LOVE the lyrics!!!!!!!

  • leome

If the album cover is along the same lines stylistically, I will like it! Love the colors so much I’ll forgive the pinkish shirt lol.

    Don’t hate the pink :(
One of David’s best shirts has to be that plaid pink one he was wearing in the concert with Adam and Kris.
I also hope the album cover is in that style, I’m liking it.

I want to read the lyrics, but it’s so small.

  • fadetowhite

OK. OK. It’s a good job I’m just at the most exciting point of a good book at the moment, because otherwise I might have spontaneously combusted during the wait.

I like the picture – and that is really saying something, because I did not like the picture on DTRC, so that’s already a huge step up!

And I like the full lyrics – wasn’t sure about just the chorus, but context is all.

So – thank you for the sugar Ed – now when will we hear the song?…:lol

  • unidentified

Oh, I like the single cover. Way better than the first CD cover. He looks cute, thin and his hair looks nice. I can make out the lyrics on DCO.

  • sr4mjc

Something about it reminds me of Avril’s artwork. I can’t put my finger on why though. Could be the font of the song title. Hmm, I’m not sure if I like or not, kinda looks like a cowering puppy. Will ponder

  • Garnetstar

Moderator confirmed this is the single cover only.

I like it. Colorful and he doesn’t look like a scary stalker. Approcable. Lyrics are FTW! Cookian lyrics finally.

  • spritely

I like! I wasn’t sure about the chorus lyrics, either, but I really like the verse ones, so now I’m happy with the whole.

Cute photo. Makes him look like he’s sticking his neck out there. :)

  • cheese

    Love the lyrics.

The single cover – it’s a little… pink. And he looks like he raided Paul McDonald’s closet. I don’t know if I like the leftover font from DCTR. I doubt that I’ll print it out and put it in my Trapper Keeper, but it is 1,000,000,000 times better than the scary Light On cover.

  • GwendolynD

Facebook just exploded. Very nice. I’m Cookie-starved, so I’m excited about next Tuesday.

  • Balance

LOVE the lyrics. Undecided on the cover art. Although he looks amazing, it sure looks like the cover of a ballad to me.

In the immortal words of Inigo Montoya “I do not think uptempo means what Tedder thinks it means.”

  • Keel

Hah! Of course, as soon as I left to grab my afternoon coffee, Ed posted the (ugh) sugar.

Lyrics are defintiely Cookian. Love it.

  • Fullmoon

I like the color and scheme but I don’t like the pose. He doesn’t look confident and strong. Doesn’t scream rockstar at all. The pink(?) looks good on him.

  • Curlin

I like the cover and it couldn’t be more different than the one for Light On, thank God! The lyrics sound good, now can’t wait to hear them next week!!

  • progression

it sure looks like the cover of a ballad to me.

Me too – one aimed squarely at the Taylor Swift set. And if they all want to buy it, I’m good with that (tm someone)! I’m figuring this will be the most CHR oriented, commerical song on the record (as it should be), so it probably won’t be my favorite but I think he did a nice job on this one of bringing some Cookie-ness to the formula. Really can’t wait to hear it.

  • Zastine4974

Some are never happy with anything Cook does.

  • _nyanyanie

i like it a lot!! wow, pretty!! he looks good…

way better than DCTR1 theme.. sorry dctr1!

  • Eyeswideshut2

I like the color and scheme but I don’t like the pose. He doesn’t look confident and strong. Doesn’t scream rockstar at all. The pink(?) looks good on him

YMMV, but that doesn’t look the kind of lyrics that goes with ‘confident and strong’, or screaming rockstar.

  • cheese

Some are never happy with anything Cook does.

It’s fun to debate, but I doubt that many iTunes shoppers base their purchases on cover art. Everyone seems to like/love the lyrics.

I know that I will buy the single. They could have put a picture of a dog turd or Danny Gokey on the cover and I would still buy it.

  • Garnetstar

It’s an approachable pose. Kinda lookin up at you like. Hello. This is me.

  • pattycake

I know that I will buy the single. They could have put a picture of a dog turd or Danny Gokey on the cover and I would still buy it.

Classic! I agree, I do not like the photo, it looks rather Greg Brady to me. It made me realize I prefer Cook minus the stylist. This pic is kinda like “i got my crossword puzzles and my pot, what about you?” type of vibe.
But I am buying whatever he is selling.

  • _nyanyanie

It’s an approachable pose. Kinda lookin up at you like. Hello. This is me.

i feel like he’s luring me with way he posed and looks

  • Trina

I don’t buy anything based on covers so no biggy..but I swear my first thought was I had a Donny Osmond doll with that same outfit on.

Second, uh yeah everything is screaming ‘ballad’. And his expression seems to go with the title. He looks sadz.

  • http://twitter.com/maxsmom61 CathyMK

Yummy. Much better cover photo than LO. That “aged folk album from the 70s” look seems to be in right now.

Can we hear the song now, please? 8)

  • tinawina

Some are never happy with anything Cook does.

Heh. You are in for a LLLOOONNNGGG ride to June, girl. This is an all-opinions-will-be-posted kinda place. :D

I like the lyrics and I have no problem with the picture. So I’m good for now. Yay!

  • suenigma

Love, love, love the lyrics and the cover-art. He looks so good in pink and maroon, and I adore the sheepish look he is giving us. Like he has done something very naughty (made us wait 2 3/4 years for the record?) and is asking for our forgiveness. I forgive you Cookie.

  • koshka

Don’t like the cover art at all. He just sort of blends into the background. That said, it doesn’t really matter it’s just a single cover.

  • Listening

Ok so I just get on the computer and what do I see all this David Cook stuff like BAM, Yahoooooooo!

Anyway I just finished reading the lyrics and they’re beautiful I actually started to tear up. I don’t recall that happening before not from reading a song It was just heart felt. I didn’t actually cry but it was super touching. Hmmm I do not see how this is up tempo really intrigued by the thought hope it works.

Now for the cover art hmmm interesting I definitely like it better than the first album cover there’s just so much going on it seems more fleshed out. I’m trying to interpret his expression i’m thinking it’s sort of timid and imploring like he’s thinking don’t hurt me. That impression I get makes sense w/ the song The last goodbye b/c he’s one hurt dude w/ the loss of his love he’s like a kicked puppy that doesn’t want to hurt any more. I think the more I stare at it the more it will grow on me.

I can not wait until the 19th it’s been so so so long.

Oh yeah we also now know the songs on the album The Last Goodbye, Goodbye to the Girl and Paper Heart.

  • sunchick

    OMFGGGGGG MOAR LYRICS.

*accepts lyrics from 70s Dave, inhales, and passes to the left (because everyone knows you pass the Dutchie on the left hand side)*

I is happy. And also sad. Because the lyrics make me verklempt. But in that really good, Cookian way that I dig. And not in the the battlefieldsleepwalkerhappyapologize Tedder way that makes me stabby. My favorite part= “We were almost beautiful, a broken piece of art put on display…” Verklempt! Oy, I think I have shpilkis in my genechtagazoink. Talk amongst yourselves, I’ll give you a topic…

The serial killer who was gonna stalk you and then force you into a nondescript van from the DCTR artwork is now an impatient 70s pimp waiting for his hoes to report back….discuss…

  • movin2thabeet

I get a heartstrings vibe here, what with the pink hues, the ‘who me?’ pose, and the flowery title font. Doesn’t exactly scream Dave Cook to me. Combined with the Ryan Tedder co-write, I’m thinking its leaning toward the softer side of the rock field. I’m not expecting a full-out rocker sound on this one. Hey, if it gets the masses to buy and come out to concerts, I won’t complain (much). As long as the label lets him put out an edgier, more forceful 2nd single, that is. Also, thrilled to hear that a band co-write made the album.

Did anyone notice the comment: “There’s a phrase I use all the time: “If you can’t control it, laugh like hell.” So I’ll just laugh instead.” I love this attitude, and I’m sure its come in handy in his situation with the label, and all the other PTB. I am not assuming that this kick-off single was his choice, nor do I think he had final say over what made the album. I think he provided input and attempted to leverage as much influence as he could. As for the rest – laughter.

  • lovegoodmusic

Bravo and all sorts of accolades galore go to the photographer who captured David Cook’s beautiful vulnerable side…it’s stunning. Oh and the lyrics are beautiful. Is April 19th here yet?

Neither one of those goes with flying hamburger pjs. I feel a disconnect.

  • sma11ie

And not in the the battlefieldsleepwalkerhappyapologize Tedder way that makes me stabby.

I know, right? I actually like a lot of Tedder stuff, and was pro- this collab, but I’m pretty happy to see no signs of the repetitiveness of “like a battlefield, battlefield, battlefield”, “like a halo, halo, halo”, or “keep bleeding, keep keep bleeding love”.

  • Keel

Bwah! Either way, he’s got a van. Except this one now has windows and a groovy paint job with eagles, mountains and mermaids.

  • Eileen99

Nice cover art!! I like it :D

  • Trina

Am I the only one hoping this doesn’t leak? If it doesn’t leak there’s less of a chance dozens of people will rip it off YouTube and maybe will actually buy it.

Man, I miss the Season 7 talent and mix of performances. Thank you, David Cook, for Season 7.

Am I the only one hoping this doesn’t leak? If it doesn’t leak there’s less of a chance dozens of people will rip it off YouTube and maybe will actually buy it.

i agree with you, trina. Absence makes the heart grow fonder, right? i like the idea of it not getting out there until april 19th. with the album, i felt like the early leaks weakened the impact and i don’t want that to happen again with his single.

can we just fast forward through the weekend please?

  • spritely

I don’t want it to leak, either. I’m for maintaining the Cook Cone of Silence until the time is perfect.

  • lifeisgood

I really like the album art and Cookie looks hot:)

  • mon_mon

I love the album art too. :) It’s been a really really really long wait and I am excited for some new songs from this guy.

  • sunchick

Okay, back for some random thoughts….

The first line “if you hear this on the radio” got me thinking. In the chorus when he says “this is our last goodbye” in context now it reads to me as if he’s saying the song itself is the last goodbye, in which case…aww. Also, since the goodbye theme has already popped up so often in conjunction with the album, I get the feeling David was contemplating the fleeting nature of fame and all the pressure on the sophomore record. Like, what if this was the last time he made a big label record, then this album would be goodbye. I dunno. I’m sure there’s also some Adam influence there too. Also, I just noticed the ladder in the cover art. Like he’s saying this is our last goodbye, then I’m going to climb up this latter and out of your life? I dunno, it was an interesting choice, along with the crumbling facade of the wall. Made me think of a line from WOHWWS “your cracks are showing through your best attempts at making nice with the world…”

Annnd that’s all I got for now.

  • sma11ie

    LMAO at David’s tweet.

Softball buddy just said, “I like that song of yours that goes ‘when you get over you, get back to me.’”. #massivelyricimprovement

I love that he still makes time for softball as he’s gearing up for promo. Guy needs a break from work sometimes.

Ugh, with all of today’s excitement, I’m not getting anything done. It’ll be an allnighter :(.

  • sunchick

LOL, it actually is a massive lyric improvement.

  • unidentified

I think I would of loved that song if it said “when you get over you, get back to me.” Way better.

  • sma11ie

Heh, I was wondering if Zac Maloy would respond to David!

zacmaloy: RT @thedavidcook:buddy said, “I like that song o yours that goes ‘when u get over you, get back to me.’”. #massivelyricimprovement//hey now!

Hee. Sorry Zac, I’m with David. It is an improvement =P

  • Laurie

I am so looking foreward to seeing him perform this next week. Those lyrics are gorgeous. He has such a tender and poetic side to him. As far as the photo goes, I think it fits perfectly to the mood of the song. He looks vulnerable, yet those eyes are just so intense and intelligent. I am digging the lavender? color.

  • spritely

lol! The lyric change is hilarious and wonderful. Sorry, Zac.

  • BootStar

Love the lyrics AND the cover art. Batting a thousand so far.

Cover definitely gives off an acoustic vibe, however. Personally, I would love that, but I’m not sure how others would feel.

lol! The lyric change is hilarious and wonderful. Sorry, Zac.

Yeah, sorry, dude. The original lyrics are beyond trite.

I like the cover art. The lyrics hurt my heart (and I love them). And I LOVE that new pic.

Hmm. Maybe I’m in a good mood today? :)
