Phillip Phillips’ Concert Review- July 2, Artpark, Lewiston,NY
    Sold out concert- Capacity 10,000.
Tickets are generally very reasonable at this venue. Ticket range $11-30.

I know there are P2 fans here from overseas who have not had the chance to see him live. There are scant reviews from this tour so I have decided to post one.
Opening band- First time opening on this tour Saints of Valory- A very entertaining band from Austin, TX. 4 man band-multi-instrumentalists. At times 3/4 were playing the drums. Have a coldplay influenced sound.

P2- This is my 4th time seeing him. First time seeing him after the new album. First time seeing the cellist Dave Eggar and the new trombonist/trumpet player and boy what a treat this turned out to be !
Setlist- as I remember it-Lead On, GUGD,Where We came From/Mystikal, Unpack your heart, GGG, MOTM, Fool for you, Thicket, Raging fire, FLY, Nice and Slow, Let’s Get it On, Home. I am focusing on the new stuff.
Lead On/ Unpack your Heart- sounded really good live- can see either one working as a single.
Fool for you- he sounded so lovely. When he sings ” what are you made of? My sugar and wine” surely dedicated to his GF, he sounds like Bono,so sweet ! I requested this pre-concert- I am not flattering myself that he sang it because of me but it was nice.
Thicket- Tour-de-force ! Very cinamatic Jam Band mind-blower. The new horn guy has taken over the last segment. The gravity of the lyrics “Paint a picture of an apple in a tree, Is that all that’s there to the thicket of the leaves?” so profound ! Really P2 should ditch the co-writers. The last jam before the driving riff closure was tight !
Fly- Never saw P2 wield an electric guitar up close-he does not strum sympathetically, he is the driving force of the riffs with Errol interjecting flourishes on his Fender. So good ! P2 as a Rock-God- better believe it. it is not an easy song to sing and he hit the notes with ease.
Nice and Slow- never saw it live. so languid and seductive with trumpet jazz solo, Errol making the electric guitar sound like a flute. P2’s voice- no vocal acrobatics but boy the tone, the rasp the mood. This kid has SOUL. He is special.

Final note- Dave Eggar ! If anyone has chance to see him live with P2- do so. He will soon be busy with his own band and his obligations to NY Ballet. MOTM intro- just incredible- a bit of Bach skipping onto Jazz.

I will not review the OAR part of the concert. Suffice to say, I am an ecstatic P2 fan. This kid has charisma, his voice has gravity. You can tell that he has a deep understanding of the musical influences jazz/funk/blues/rock that constitute his live show. He is undoubtedly one of the finest young musicians I have ever seen live.

Did you get free chocolate instead?

Media review of OAR/P2 concert at Artpark:

    “OAR rocks Artpark again”

    The P2 review:

Phillip Phillips was the other draw on the ticket. While he didn’t have as deep a catalog as O.A.R., Phillips was banking on two albums worth of solid pop tunes, the recordings made possible by winning American Idol a few years back.

“Lead On” was the first song up and set the stage for a high-energy performance that would prove to be a near perfect setup for the headliners. Phillips’ hits like “Get Up Get Down”, “Gone, Gone, Gone” and “Home”, the “coronation” song from his American Idol performances, generated plenty of heat from fans. His band was pretty solid, too.

Another OAR/P2 concert review from Council Bluffs:

“O.A.R., Phillip Phillips deliver double the sing-along songs”

    The P2 review:

Strummy singer-songwriter Phillips, who performed before O.A.R., may be best known for winning “American Idol” in 2012, but songs such as “Gone, Gone, Gone” and “Home” have helped him transcend the talent show.

Every one of Phillips’ songs was a raging sing-along strummer. Any of them would fit in a bank commercial where a happy, good-looking family charges down a beach and splashes into the water. (A few of his songs have done just that.)

Women closed their eyes and breathlessly sang along, and thousands of people cheered and shouted lyrics such as “Give me reasons to believe that you would do the same for me.”

The doubly named one is of the breed of “Idol” performers such as Chris Daughtry or Adam Lambert that used their time on the show as a steppingstone rather than their sole vehicle for fame. Phillips would have eventually achieved success, but he used “Idol” for a (big) push.

Phillips’ greatest weakness is the fact that he’s a near-perfect imitation of Dave Matthews. In fact, if the famed rock singer retired or dropped dead, Phillips could be subbed in and it would be hard to notice the difference.

@adamlambert Big night tonight. I’ll be there cheering with the rest. Can’t wait to see your star turn tonight at The Forum. #BreakALeg

Interesting Phillip could sell out a 10,000 cap venue as the headliner, but only had 49% (~2,000) when he co-headlined.

  • fuzzywuzzy

When did P2 sell out a 10,000 cap venue?

  • Mel432

P2 Payola review above. She said sold out concert, capacity 10,000

  • fuzzywuzzy

That was a show with OAR. I posted the link to the review and P2’s review here:

There’s nobody on the Idol staff who is more supportive of former Idols than Michael. I think most of them see him as a friend.

Omg tonight at the forum! His hometown :)

    RT @tellulady: The crowd

Holy moly!! I’ve seen more @adamlambert t-shirts being worn than Queen t-shirts. This is a hometown crowd, alright.

Welcome to a show with no dancers and real singing! ~ Roger Taylor

Adam put on an amazing show tonight. I think pretty much all his family and friends showed up to support him. Lots of celebrity and musician sightings. #nodoubt #muse.

Back from The Voice concert. Uploading a million gigantic videos right now. It’s going to take a while.

It was a pretty well pace show. Too many videos featuring the coaches (I don’t care) and there was this “blind audition” bit featuring people from the audience that had me checking my twitter.

But the singing was terrific. For the most part, good song selections. Great pacing. Instead of the contestants having individual sets, their performances were sprinkled throughout the show. So, you got Josh and Tessanne at the beginning middle and end.

Also, the live band was really good. Near the end, Tess introduced each one by name, which I thought was a nice touch.

The finale was a 15 minute mega-medley, ending with the cast singing “Happy” and tossing giant red balls into the audience. Fun.

The crowd was enthusiastic. However, there were pockets of empty seats all over the 2,800 seat venue. The rear right floor was completely empty. Maybe 70% capacity? I’m terrible at eyeing these things.

    Allison Iraheta @AllisonIraheta
@adamlambert just killed it with @queenwillrock @theforum. Breathtaking..

Sasha Mallory, who was one of Adam’s dancers on the Glamnation tour, and also was on SYTYCD a couple of years ago was there too.

It’s so great to see increasing numbers of reviewers and the public appreciate Adam’s great vocal and performing abilities. I’m hoping that this tour with Queen will encourage more people to check out Adam’s solo music.

  • girlygirl

Saw Allison was at the Queen + Adam concert last night. Hope she and Adam got a chance to catch up :)

  • girlygirl

I want to say thank you to the people taking the vids of the Queen + Adam concerts. They aren’t playing here in Nashville and I can’t afford to fly to one of their shows, but the vids almost make it seem like I’m at the concert. The quality on some of them is amazing. So thanks again :)

    A tweet from last night:
Somewhere in the audience Chris Colfer is realizing that maybe Elliot Gilbert didn’t go to a spa retreat after all.

  • Marko

    I can’t afford a flight from Europe :)

  • Corrine43180

He had an after party post concert with lots of his friends and family, I’ll bet she was there.
