Clay Aiken sang “Unchained Melody” as a surprise guest at David Foster’s Hitman concert in San Jose California last night (11/06). Foster’s sister, Jaymes is the mother of Clay’s son, Parker Foster Aiken, born in August 2008.

It was nice of Clay to drop by Uncle David’s show!

Also featured in the hitman lineup are Season 2 winner, Ruben Studdard and Season 7 Idol, Michael Johns.

The video is terrible, but the audio is decent…

The man can sing! I still love his voice!

  • Jolene

So basically, the David Foster Tour is where Idol careers go to die?

  • houstonrufus

I’ve never been a fan of Clay’s singing style, but he can hit the notes. Good to see him out and about.

  • happygolucky

Anne Marie Boskovich was also one of the 3 backup singers last night. She was one of the Top 36 contestants last season. To refresh your memory, below’s her audition vid. Very pretty in person.

  • Niall

I don’t know if Clay can hit the notes anymore. Yes, he was in tune (which was an improvement over his horrible gala performances) but compare this performance to his UM performances from years ago and you can tell his range has diminished and he’s relying more on vocal tricks and shortcuts nowadays.

  • houstonrufus

I’ll take your word for it, Niall. I didn’t listen to the whole vid. :)

  • hwc

Foster has been profiting from the starry-eyed dreams of Idol rejects since day one. He seems to gravitate towards “helping” the careers of those with some family money. Probably just a coincidence.

  • mandalay

Did anyone know that this is where David Foster got his start. He plays keyboards and he is the one walking down the beach with his then pregnant wife.

  • Ladyguard

I am not a fan of Clay’s but I have to admit he does have a beautiful voice. Wasn’t it David Foster’s daughter who is the mother of Clay’s son?

  • KmA

Clay sounded wonderful in the clip. He was only there to watch the show and not perform, so for a spur of the moment performance, he blew the song out of the water. Great job!

  • druzilla

Oh I just bet it was “spur of the moment.” If we’ve learned nothing, Aiken is calculating and an easy liar. I would’ve walked out. I’m still disgusted with how he treated his fans.

  • lrt

It’s so good to hear Clay sing this song again – he sounds wonderful.

  • Squirrely

Sister, really? How old was she, I wonder?

  • ohmyra

I think 51 when she had Clay’s son. She looks like a young 30 something. Jaymes is a beautiful woman who was Clay’s executive producer on his last CD.

  • ohmyra

Claymates, feel free to chime in. I could be off by a year or two.

  • KmA

druzilla – well lucky for Clay that you aren’t a fan then. If you had had a ticket and walked out, I hope it would have been up close because I would have moved up in a heartbeat. Clay was there to see the show, visit his friends, and support his friend Ruben. Anyway, Clay did a great job on that song. Probably one of the best renditions I’ve heard him sing of it.

  • phdrmom

It’s not like they have never done the song together but I do believe it was unrehearsed. David has done that to Clay before. David loves how Clay sings Unchained Melody & that video shows why.

Clay still has a fantastic voice & he knows how to sell a song!

I can’t wait for his next CD & tour!

  • Ladyguard

Oh I just bet it was ‘spur of the moment.’ If we’ve learned nothing, Aiken is calculating and an easy liar. I would’ve walked out. I’m still disgusted with how he treated his fans.

i don’t know what Clay supposedly did to his fans. I do know one thing, he has a pretty fanatical loyal fanbase.

  • LoveContinuum

Good heaven. I’ve never heard Clay Aiken before, although I heard about him when he “came out.” In the past few months, I’ve heard a few comments likening Clay to Adam Lambert. Now that I’ve heard him… How anyone could use his name and Adam’s in the same sentence is beyond me. He’s awful!! I mean, he sounds better than me, that’s for sure. But my puppy sounds better than me. Sorry Clay fans, but I can’t get over how average he is.

  • clearone

I think 51 when she had Clay’s son.

You are correct…….but she did Clay no favours as his EP. I hope now that he has a new label, a new EP is part of the deal. For the sake of his son, I hope Clay finds success again.

  • cmc25

So this is Clay Aiken from past AI. He has a great and wonderful voice and to my opinion better than many of todays aspiring singer. From what I’ve read his first album sold more than 600,000 in one week. What happened next?.?

  • Niall

No way this was unrehearsed or spontaneous…Clay remembered all the words. LOL

  • ohmyra

Totally agree clearone. I didn’t like the CD and didn’t buy it even though I am a fan of his voice. Still getting ready to play his Xmas EP that I got last year…All is Well, it’s terrirf. Maybe need to check out the full length Xmas CD which sold like firecrackers.

  • KmA

No way this was unrehearsed or spontaneous’ ¦Clay remembered all the words. LOL

I would hope he would remember the words since he’s sung this song many, many times. It was spontaneous and unrehearsed. He’s done that song with David Foster before.

  • KmA

I agree with the bolded part above. There is no comparison at all. Clay sounded WONDERFUL!!!

  • http://www.irish-wolfhounds.com Buderschnookie

First Clay Aiken song I ever listened to.
    Won’t be a second.

  • ohmyra

Just looked up Merry Christmas with Love — 1.4M

  • Xela

While the video is atrocious, the audio isn’t too bad.
Had no idea Clay Aiken could encompass such a lower
register – sounded great to me [I prefer singers who
have a variety of ranges, his lower register is previously
unknown to me, and I like it very much.

I do have his Christmas CD, which I enjoy all year
regardless of season. Clay Aiken’s voice is very
    unique and easily recognizable …

Glad to see that he’s using all the ranges he possesses,
    good showing audio for him.

  • ohmyra

So basically, the David Foster Tour is where Idol careers go to die?

Guess it was the year before last when Clay was in Spamalot that he was in the 2-3M$ club for the year. Mmmm. yep, dying slowly. give me that kind of death.

  • Martie

Clay’s voice is wonderful. Just go to YouTube and look at the many vidoes of his Christmas performances and the Juke Box Tour. He hasn’t been performing much lately — which is a real shame — and he needs to get back in form.

His Christmas album, Merry Christmas with Love, set a new record for fastest-selling holiday album in the Soundscan era (since 1991) and tied Cline Dion’s record for the highest debut by a holiday album in the history of Billboard magazine.

Jaymes Foster, David’s sister, was 50 when Parker Aiken was born. She is 51 now, and, believe me, she looks it — every day of it. To say she looks 30-something is unbelievable!

Clay Aiken is a human being. He isn’t perfect, and he doesn’t have to be. But in spite of his occasional screw ups and odd choices, he’s a good man.

  • cmc25

I went to Amazon to check his CDs. His voice is really haunting and wonderful. I could end up buying a CD or 2.

This blog introduced me first to Adam. Now I have Clay.

Thanks ohmyra. I will definitely check Clay’s you tube.

  • ohmyra

I’ve watched every seaon of AI. Kelly was my only winner. But there are so many gems along the way.

  • Gerber

Clay sounded fabulous last night. I can’t wait for the new album. Is it 2010 yet?

  • ohmyra

Geez, I’m still trying to get this song to play.

  • Ladyguard

Yes, Clay had impressive sales records for the first couple of years. This .is6 . years later and the competition is much more fierce.

  • Ladyguard

I look at this year and the three singles that the top three have put out. They are great but it is like pulling teeth to get the sales. What was Clay’s first single…..”Invisible”. That song sucked.

  • larc

Yes, Clay had impressive sales records for the first couple of years.

Clay’s album On My Way Here didn’t sell well at all, although I think in many ways it was his best. So much for the fickle music-buying public!

This .is6 . years later and the competition is much more fierce.

    Interesting word choice. ;)

  • princessdi

“Now that I’ve heard him’ ¦ How anyone could use his name and Adam’s in the same sentence is beyond me.”

OMG, I so agree with you because Clay can actually you know “sing” the high notes as opposed to screeching.

  • joanie

Clay sounded fantastic last night……yeah, his voice is gone.

  • http://MJO judes

That’s the first time I’ve heard Clay’s voice- very nice!!

This is the first tour that David Foster has ever done so I feel it is a privilege for some of the idols to be asked to be part of this tour. Michael Johns is touring for all the concerts along with Rueben – here’s a video of MJ with Peter Cetera – the Hard Habit to break duet which has been so well received on tour- their voices blend so well!!

  • Truthiness

Well I thought Clay sounded good. A few rough patches, but hard to say if that was his voice or the sound quality of the cell phone recording.

But still a good version, and as I was just saying in the headline thread, Clay’s version(s) on the show were great. So this version has a lot to live up. Can’t tell if his voice is going or gone. I haven’t paid enough attention to Clay’s career to check, and won’t be checking out any YouTubes either. I’ll let that be debated by others. I just know his AI UM was very good, this wasn’t as good, but hey, that’s hard to do.

  • http://www.last.fm/user/RemusL/ RemusL

An excellent performance. It reminded me why I fell in love with his voice during season 2 of AI.

  • mgk

He has a good voice, but there’s something very breathy and affected about it. Kind of off-putting.

  • abbysee

Oooh, wonderful of the newfound claymates to actually find this blog today. Kismet? Clay had a wonderful voice, unfortunately he thought it was automatic, and has done absolutely nothing to nourish it, and it’s pretty much crap now. As for comparing numbers of years past, eh, big deal. Let’s see how long he lasts….well we already see right? I somehow would put more money on the longetivity of Archie’s career, than Clay’s. I mean Archie takes great care of his voice, and his fans. He is actually far more knowlegeable of music than Clay ever was, and he is writing songs for his cd. I think that was Clay’s problem. He thought his voice and ‘personality’ was enough, but it wasn’t. He wasn’t as smart as some have thought. I use to be a fan of Clay’s during the first part of the show the year he was on. Then when his looks evolved, but the music didn’t, that was it for me. Now it’s just fun watching his fans. Hi guys ;)

  • larc

I don’t know why Clay stoped his work, but to me looks like his own responsability, and yes i think something of his personality changed with the succes post idol, but i hope he gonna be succesful again and still liking his voice.

    ^THIS^

His ultra-snarky remark about Adam and RoF told me more about the real Clay than I think he would have ever wanted me to know.

  • gingerly

For me, this is ultimate Clay Aiken. He brings absolutely nothing amazing to a overwrought song. He makes it so that if you aren’t already a fan, you can’t be (I can’t be). I find Clay Aiken to be the worst thing that ever happened to American Idol in that he makes people want to make fun of everything about the show by not having a clue how to own a song. He does nobody any favors with this piece of crap. I don’t care if he has a voice. I’d rather listen to somebody with no voice bring something new.

  • TwigLA

I don’t know if it’s the audio quality or if Clay is ill or tired singing this. He just doesn’t sound as good as he used to. He was never someone I warmed up to, but he had a very lovely voice.

  • ohmyra

Poor quality on this one. Check out the real thing.

  • http://myspace.com/girlgeek mj

    Reminder:

Deleted all the fanwarrish off-topic stuff. How did Archie get brought up in this thread? It’s all deleted. Please stay on topic and keep it civil. I’ll be deleting all defensive and rude posts.

  • Linda33

Clay Aiken sang Unchained Melody beautifully
Who is Archie? Who is Adam?

  • tibitibis

Clay Aiken sang Unchained Melody beautifully
Who is Archie? Who is Adam?

Clay Aiken sang Unchained Melody beautifully
    David Archuleta sang Imagine beautifully
Adam Lambert sang Mad World beautifully

Glad we a many options to choice!!! so go Guys , i hope all gonna be very succesfully on their own style! :)

  • AllenTX

He’s still singing cover? LOL. Can he enter the AI contest again? maybe that’ll revive his ‘career’.

  • Grammie Kari

I always thought Clay had a beautiful voice. Yes, there IS more competition and music style changes. I still believe Clay will always find work singing.

  • joanie

There may be more competition since Clay was on AI, but the record companies are going down the tubes.

I doubt anyone will ever break his MCWL stats.

As to why some people seem to think because he hadn’t recorded a new CD, toured, or made appearances in a year or so, it’s simple. The man took time off to spend with his child. The man knows his priorities.

  • musical

Here’s a u tube version that is considerably better in both video and audio quality:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dTugnsf3Cnk&feature=player_embedded

BTW: Clay is singing UM in the same key (not lower) that David Foster always selects for it (beginning with his performance at Foster’s Gala in Canada).

For a singer who has been on almost a full year of vocal rest following significant TMJ surgery, he’s well on his way back.

  • temkanoe

I went ahead and listened to the good quality vid…and yeah, his voice is gone. Its sad. I was such an uber fan of Clay way back when, when I was younger. And he was always so super cheesy I liked it. But I never saw any growth in his music it got boring. Bleh. Now if I see his image I flip the the page and if I see him on tv I flip the channel. Bleh…I’ve lost interest.

  • Lynnie171

His voice is gone????? You’re kidding, right? You know, I can’t stand Adam Lambert, but many many people love him. So I don’t go around putting him down, I don’t watch his vids and come here and diss him. I wouldn’t disrespect his fans in that manner. If you don’t like Clay Aiken, why did you watch this vid? If you’ve lost interest, move on for your own peace of mind, and allow those of us who find Clay Aiken amazing to enjoy him. And I add…Adam fans…enjoy your guy!

  • yksask

temkanoe If you flip the “page if you see his image” and ” flip the channel” if he comes on why are you watching the video. Seems to me you would have “flipped” right past the video and not made a negative comment here if you had lost interest.

  • betty

Temkanoe: Yeah, he lost his voice! That’s the reason he was so welcomed by the audience, Did you see the people’s reaction while he was singing? If you watched the video you had to see it. Not only at the beginning and end of the song but also during the song. That was a nice surprise for the audience, like a wonderful bonus! And I’m so surprised that Clay Aiken’s video was posted on this blog along with a positive comment, he is usually ignored to say the least.

  • Suzanne

I thought he sounded good. I was also touched that David Foster called Clay his brother-in-law. Of course they aren’t really–Clay Aiken is not married to Jaymes Foster–but I think it’s so sweet that they think of each other that way. Nice family spirit.

You know, I really rooted for Clay during S2–such an underdog. But AI was a different kind of competition back then. It wasn’t about songwriters or arrangers or musicians–it was just about singing, and Clay’s great at it. But beyond country music, you don’t see successful recording artists who only sing.

  • Grammie Kari

In some ways, I miss the old Idol format. I was also remembering how much I enjoyed Clay’s Christmas special.

  • Allison

It’s nice to hear Clay sing UM again so well in a live situation. That was my wedding song! I’m hoping he’s getting another album out soon; I thought his 2008 album”On My Way Here” was done quite well. Even though Clay can frustrate me at times, I still love the voice and persona that came through in AI2.
