Phil Phillips “The World From the Side of the Moon”
    Phillip Phillips “Home”Digital 33
    Phil Phillips “Gone, Gone, Gone”

    Why?! )))

  • Kirsten

Why is he sometimes Phil and sometimes Phillip? Depends on the mood I’m in when I create the entry. I copy the post each week as a starting template.

He’s Phillip Phillips on the chart, but he seems to be more commonly called “Phil”.

Actually, the Phillip Phillips name really bugs me. I get that people get tempted to give their kids a cutesy joke names, but most people manage to overcome those urges before they fill out the form. That generations of Phillips have gone for the joke boggles my mind.  It’s like the entire family keeps shouting, “Here, pull my finger”. Gah!!!!!

So, when I want to give him a more mature, professional name, I use “Phil” (usually the diminutive is not the more professional, but in this case I would argue it is). When I’m “It says Phillip Phillips”-follow-the-rules mode, I use “Phillips”.

And now somebody is going to tell me that they call all their first-borns Phillip because their ancestor Phillip Hogg rescued 175 people from a burning boat and founded charities throughout the land. They weren’t going to stop honouring the Phillip name just because Ima Hogg married a George Phillips.

Or the “Why” was really “Why does P2 have 3 items on the chart?” and my rant on naming was for naught.

  • IrisandLilies

I have to say that even though it’s repetitive, I still prefer Phillip Phillips to Phil Phillips.  Whenever I see the name “Phil,” I always think of the dorky dad character on Modern Family.  Phillip is the opposite of dorky to me (although he was adorably dorky sitting on the fence in the opening montage of his first appearance on AI).

But I don’t like “Phil Phillips” – this guy lived and sang 50 years ago.

What? There is not just one family who went for that joke but two? And two of them went on to be singers? There must be something in the water.

I’m scared to look if there really are people called Mike Hunt.

Happy to see that Kelly Clarkson got another platinum selling song on her hand with Catch My Breath. I hope her next single, People Like Us will be successful as Catch My Breath or even Stronger. Any numbers on Kelly’s Stronger album? I would assume it sold another 3-5k copies.

  • GRjourney1

Nice to see David Archuleta back on the charts when he isn’t even here to let people know he has a new album coming out.  He was #52 on the itunes pop album chart a little while ago.  This, of course, is all based on preorder.  Being a fan I have most of the songs on his new album.  They were songs that supposedly you could only get in Asia, but you know that fans always find a way. lol  David singing romantic songs is my kind of perfect.  The song that none of us had heard is now on itunes as a snippet…Heart Falls Out.  I love it.  I was surprised that it was a more uptempo song.  The title sounded like a ballad.  Listen and see what you think http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d_evNJ4qDnA

found it! thanks so much :) i was right. she sold about 3k copies so as of today, 1.034 million copies sold. i’m really impressed with the longevity of the album! hope her next album will do as well as stronger. i still can’t believe all i ever wanted still have not been certified platinum yet.

  • Hazehel

What? There is not just one family who went for that joke but two?

I thought most people know Phil Phillips and his song Sea of Love – http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EroRtEUmZcU

I suppose it just shows that I am getting really old.

  • http://twitter.com/bilolobi Namarinad

Phillip Phillips ups his total of No. 1s
ON THE ‘HOME’ FRONT: The story of Phillip Phillips’
“Home” does not have an ending yet. The single debuts at No. 1 on the
Adult Top 40 Recurrents chart this week. It is the 10th chart to lift
the season 11’s winner coronation song to first place. Add in Phillips’ one week at
No. 1 with his album The World from the Side of the Moon on Top Rock Albums, and he now has 11 Billboard No. 1s to his credit.

    congratulations !

  • Kirsten

I suppose it just shows that I am getting really old.

Sorry, my little lady bug, but I feel old even knowing the Honeydrippers’ remake of that song. Back in the day when even the women had mullets and speedos were featured in videos: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_9-026ZCKR8

I knew that it was a remake, but I didn’t know the original artist. The Honeydrippers was an early 80s band made up of Roger Plant and Jimmy Page from Led Zeplin, Jeff Becks from the Yardbirds and some of their friends.

  • Incipit

“Phil Phillips” – this guy lived and sang 50 years ago.

Indeed – and he had some very sweet vocals. Also, Al Pacino and Ellen Barkin.  Sea of Love – Good movie.

So I only ever call this one Phillip – if I have to call him anything.

It is nice.  I have no expectations everything David A is doing is the cherry on top :)  Love for there to be some success for him because I think this album is one of his best compilations of my favorite songs.  Heart Falls Out is a complete pleasant surprise. I’m loving it already.

No Matter How Far is available on itunes and amazon for preorder with snippets.

This may sound crazy, but I think Gone Gone Gone could be the Call Me Maybe and Rolling in the Deep of this summer.  It has catchy lyrics and a good beat.

  • cheese1

I don’t think GGG will reach Call Me Maybe levels, but I think it will park itself in the iTunes top 10 for a bit, eventually.

  • http://twitter.com/DorkAngel DorkAngel-GBW

IKR!!  I don’t have any expectations because I never expected that David A. would have prepared good much music/goodies for his fans before he left. He’s been gone for almost a year and we’re getting another album with some new music! Heck Yeah!

Ps: I holding out on listening to Heart Falls Out until I can hear it in its entirety, but I loved, loved, loved, the reaction of fans on Twitter last night. Some of the young ones were pretty riled up there. Hormones took over his feed. It was very interesting. LOL

  • Lobilobi

i hope you guys won’t be disappointed, wish your expectations come true
what are the haters predictions for the song ?

  • TheOther

But inspite of the monster hit of Call Me Maybe, Grammy nods, Bieber pushing the song, it’s Phillip who’s had more success with his CD.

CRJ Kiss was released Sep 12.  It has only sold around 200+ in the U.S., barely halfway to Gold.  The World From The Side of The Moon was released Nov 12.  It has over 700K (and growing).

LOL at “Trivia note: you only need six letters (E, G, H, M, N and O) to spell the titles of Phillips’ first two singles.”
No matter how much we love him and his songs, there is no way we can completely ignore the facts that the names are kinda funny.
“Gone Gone Gone by Phillip Philips”.  As catchy as the song itself, won’t you say?

  • LongKissGoodnight

    But
inspite of the monster hit of Call Me Maybe, Grammy nods, Bieber
pushing the song, it’s Phillip who’s had more success with his CD, where
he wrote or co-wrote 9 of the tracks.

CRJ Kiss was released Sep 12.  It has only sold around 200K+ in the
U.S., barely halfway to Gold.  The World From The Side of The Moon was
released Nov 12.  It has over 700K (and growing).

Ok, as regulars of this board know I am Phillip’s fan, and (with the small exception of Tonight I’m Getting Over You) I do not care for Carly’s music one way or another, but there seems to be a bunch of  misconceptions that as a chart geek I can not help myself but want to clear up.
There are 2 very good reasons why Carly’s and Phillip’s number are so different:

    First.
POP genre and radio format are historically the strongest single seller, the downside is, unless you are bringing something new (like Gaga did) pop stars are rarely praised for their artistry. Therefor, if you are putting out a caramel pop like CMM, it’s unlikely to have as much of album selling power as out of the box stuff breaking into mainstream (Gotye), in fact for majority of pop stars now days it takes a string of hits/smashes to really start the ball rolling on the album.

Rock on the other hand is strongly associated with artistry, and the time honored tradition of buying the album in not dead among genre’s fans yet, so when a rock-ish song hits big, delivered to a vide range of listeners (not only by radio, but by television, interweb and word-of-mouth) it has a significantly higher hit-to-album perches ratio.

    Second.
And this is even more important than the first, as you have correctly mentioned Kiss was released Sep 12, but Call Me Maybe had reached #1 on POP June 11 and #1 on Hot 100 the same week followed by a very slow descend in the end of June-beginning of July (while still raining supreme on Hot 100) and went recurrent on POP by August 20.
So by the time the album was released in September there was only fumes and good memories of CMM smash-power left. And the task of carrying out the album went to fun but very forgettable hit follow up collaboration with Owl City – “Good Time” that was peaking during album release, and 3d uninspired single “That Kiss” that was a downright flop.

Home on the other hand was still building on the radio by the time of album release, and had picked a week before Christmas on POP (arguably cut short by the holidays, when it was replaced by Christmas tunes, newer to rebound again, dew to it’s age) and saw it’s highest position on Hot 100 during January Meltdown when HAC and especially AC was returning to regular playlists even though by that time Home was already bleeding spins on POP.
So the album had gotten almost two month of benefiting from still growing smash, and a couple more month of nice “tale” with Home falling out of top 20 Overall Airplay only a few days ago with 66K worth of AI.

To reiterate, CMM can’t be used as the example of poor album sales despite smash single situation because CMM had never gotten a chance to support the album it came from.

To reiterate, CMM can’t be used as the example of poor album sales
despite smash single situation because CMM had never gotten a chance to
support the album it came from.

    Excellent analysis!

  • LongKissGoodnight

    Thank you, Kirsten. %)

I would add that all new and old acts that are getting major buzz right now in alternative world are doing great in terms of album sales with crossover hits (M&S – 2x Platinum next week, Lumineers & Fun. – Platinum, Imagine Dragons & Of Monsters and Men, – gold and counting, Ed Sheeran – alt. singer/songwriter about to go gold)
or without (Black Keys – Platinum, Jack White & Alabama Shakes about to go gold).
More or less done and running on fumes: Florence + The Machine – 871K, Gotye 738K, Foster The People was 900+ when I last saw them.

And even without any hits, there is the curios case of Lana Del “killed by poor SNL performance” Ray:
“Born To Die” – 541K and counting,
“Paradise” (reissued edition of Born to Die with additional nine tracks) – 173K.

So you can see how the rising tide lift all boats.

However there was two recent examples of alt.rock acts that had major crossover hits that did not result in big album sales:

Alex Clare’s “Too Close” has sold 2.890 million but follow up has not done much so album is out of BB 200, last numbers I could find was from the middle of January – 173K (in his defense absolutely unknown in US act basically plucked from obscurely by IE’s commercial).

Neon Trees’ “Everybody Talks” – 2.744 million, but again struggling follow up and the album no longer charting.
Last seen in the middle of January with 135K sold. Shame.

    As for Carly’s situation…
“Tonight I’m Getting Over You” is IMHO the strongest radio option from the album, and should have been served to radio after CMM, you know, before even Country Queen had scored a smash with dubstep break in the chores.
TIGOY enters significantly different POP chart now then it would back in the day, and it’s sound is more of “been there, done that” instead of “fresh and hip” it would still be considered just half a year ago. Plus, so much time was lost on “This Kiss” Carly as an artist had basically regressed to a newbie status.

For my ears this song still packs enough punch to develop into nice and juicy smash, but Interscope would have to push-push-push to overcome unfortunate circumstances.

If it flops – it’s the end of the era.
