America’s Got Talent 2016 Top 10
Out of TEN acts competing in tonight’s America’s Got Talent final, FIVE or 50% are singing acts. It’s hard to imagine Simon won’t get what he seems to want–a champion singer. It’s why 3 singing acts sit in the Top 5 of my Top 10.
Join us tonight as we live blog the America’s Got Talent Final beginning at 8 pm ET on NBC. In the meantime, I’ve ranked all 10 acts. How would YOU rank them?
10. Viktor Kee – Juggler – Viktor barely made it through to the Top 10 last week. He brings a unusual elegance to the art of juggling but he didn’t really up his game last time. He also drops the balls every time. Also, some members of the audience may find him a little weird.
9. Tape Face – Comic Mime – I find Tapey’s weird humor hilarious. But his strange miming with black tape covering his mouth is oddball and maybe a little too subtle for the AGT audience.
8. Laura Bretan – Opera Singer – Did you know that Laura won Romania’s Got Talent last summer? Well, I don’t think she’ll be winning AGT, Although the 14 year old singer needs more work on her technical skills, she performs opera with heart and emotion, In another season, Laura might have won or come close, but not in this singer-stuffed lineup.
7. Sofie Dossi – Contortionist – Sofie had to be saved via the Dunkin Save last week. She’s been a front runner all season, however I think it was a mistake to perform without her bow and arrow last week. If she hopes to make the Top 5, Sofie needs to bring back the element of extreme danger to her act.
6. Linkin’ Bridge – A’capella Singers – This quartet from the mean streets of St. Louis aren’t the best singers, but they seem to have touched a chord in the AGT audience with their sweet harmonies and touching backstory about escaping poverty.
5. Jon Dorenbos – NFL Player/Magician – Jon is currently an NFL Football Player. His backstory is tragic–Jon’s father is currently in prison for murdering his mother. The grandparents raised him. Nevertheless, he went on to find great success in sports. And his magic is pretty spot on too. That’s a pretty potent combo.
4. Sal Valentinetti – Standards Singer – Sal’s basically a Frank Sinatra imitator, but brings an outsized Italian-American schtick to his act that viewers seem to love. It’s a singer’s year on AGT, and Sal advanced in the Top 3 two weeks ago, so I’m ranking him high on the list.
3. The Clairvoyants – Mentalists – This duo is extremely entertaining and execute a flawless act. It’s not only their high-level tricks, but their chemistry and ability to weave a spooky story around Amelia’s supposed ability to read minds. If it weren’t a singer’s year, these two could have taken the whole thing.
2 .Brian Justin Crum – Adult Contemporary/Broadway Singer – I ALMOST put Brian in the number 1 spot and I would not be entirely surprised if this Broadway vet takes it all. However, he’s merely a singer next to Grace Vanderwaal’s ability to write songs. Brian has an impressive ability to make ANY song he sings huge. His range and confidence got him where he is, without ever divulging his 10 years worth of stage experience.
1. Grace Vanderwaal – Singer/Songwriter – It’s probably a singing show FIRST. This 12 year old has performed her own compositions each time she hit the stage. Technically, Grace is competing as a songwriter rather than a singer. Simon is constantly downplaying her vocals as immaterial next to her prodigy-like songwriting chops. This is the gal Simon is rooting for and I think she’ll win.
