American Idol Final 2 Spoilers Recap – Cookie sings U2, Archie Reprises “Imagine”

Let’s re-organize the information we have, shall we?

Song Spoilers:

  • Personal song choices have leaked: David Archuleta will reprise “Imagine” per Nigel Lythgoe Thursday on Ryan Seacrest’s KISS morning show. David Cook will sing a new song, U2’s “I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For”, per a report on FOX news. Cookie is the first Idol to get a U2 song cleared for competition.
  • The Davids picked their own coronation song from the 10 most popular songs in the list of 20 that were available for online voting, per Nigel. How’s that for a twist? We don’t know which song either contestant has chosen yet.
  • Clive Davis chose a song for the Davids. There are rumors swirling about, but there are no clear choices yet. I’ll bet the picks are AWESOME! /sarcasm.

Wednesday Finale:

  • The So You Think You Can Dance dancers will be performing on Wednesday’s finale
  • Two Idols from each of the previous six seasons will come back to perform a group number. Hooray! Bo Bice has already confirmed. Yahoo.
  • Carrie Underwood will perform her new single “Last Name”, according to her My Space.
  • Thereà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s going to be another à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Dead Elvisà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ video (last year, Celine Dion sang a à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“duetà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ with Elvis Presley), this time including several people, per Nigel on KISS.
  • The à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“biggest starà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ in the world will be there, says Nigel. Robert Downey Jr. perhaps? He’ll be there according to the FOX report. Nigel is probably high enough to think Robert Downey Jr. is a big star.
  • Nigel told Ryan this morning that the Top 5 will sing duets with à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“somebodyà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ . FOX news is reporting (see video after the jump) that “each of the Idols” will be singing with one of the celebrity mentors who appeared during the season. There were four mentors: Mariah Carey, Neil Diamond, Dolly Parton and Andrew Lloyd Webber. If she’s talking about the Top 5 duets, who would be the 5th mentor? Paul McCartney or Ringo Starr? McCartney would fit the “biggest star in the world” description. But, neither Beatle were actually mentors. Or, maybe the FOX reporter is talking about something else entirely?
  • Nigel and FOX confirmed a Jonas Brothers appearance.
  • Paula Abdul will debut a song from her upcoming album, and the Top 12 will also be performing alongside Paula for a special group number. Who knows. Maybe Pauler got cold feet and changed her mind. Yahoo.
  • The band One Republic (responsible for the mega-hit à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Apologizeà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ . Ryan Tedder from the band recently wrote for Clay Aiken and Blake Lewis) canceled a gig in order to be available for the finale. Daily Press

    Well, I like the idea of the Davids choosing from a list of the 10 most popular songs! I like that idea a lot. It gives them a chance to choose something they can connect with.

  • fisch

    Carrie Underwood will be on the finale singing “last name” and I’m sure some other cheesy thing with other AI finalists…lol

  • BigNLiddle

    That’s weird – U2 allowed Canadian Idol finalists to sing their songs on that show, but not AI?

  • Stefunny

    Oh my. U2! DC better do it right b/c that, my friends, is an iconic song that the key watching audience is very, very familiar with. And if he nails it and his cheesy coronation song, I will vote for him even though he has never been my fave.

  • nmc

    Oh my gosh, Cookie singing one of my all time favorite songs evah by my all time favorite band evah?!?!!! GAHHHH. I’m so excited.

    AHHHH!!!!

  • skylight1219

    I love U2’s song, and Kaylan Porter sang it on CI a few years ago. It’s awesome!

  • Natasha

    So are we sure U2 is Cook’s choice? I guess that means I still have to worry about what Clive has dusted off for DC. Maybe he’s still dusting, you know how dust accumulates.

  • Chicago-sally

    MJ please take video, bec I will be in school and have no taping machine.

    Now here’s my take on the return of Idols of the past: several of them need a BOOST to their careers; namely Bo, Katherine, Reuben, probably Clay….who has a new CD out….they’ll be glad to be on TV again….I think Bo should feel really grateful for getting the chance to be on Idol and promote his CD.

    IMO these 2 hour results shows are pitiful waste of time….it’s almost as bad as the 1 hour results shows….the producers, Fox, Clive, Ford, et al are milking the results shows for all they can.

  • hapi

    Love Bo being on. Wahhhhh also want Taylor!

  • liza41

    DC will win or lose on that song. It is a hugely popular song and he is going to have to be as good or better than Bono (not an easy task). If he has a “moment” with it, Archie doesn’t stand a chance. If he just does an okay job or just a good job, but nothing special, Archie will win with “Imagine,” IMO.

  • Allison

    I guess David Cook will be the winner, since he’s singing U2!

  • Linny

    Insert my OMG here! That is just about my favorite song evarrrr!!! DCFTW!! I hope he does it justice. It’s is truly a classic, iconic tune. Gotta watch out there. I fear what the Dread Lord Clive has planned.

    We’ve come a long way from the pointy pose, haven’t we? The world’s biggest star. I can only imagine…Where is Michael Jackson these days?

    I hear from the Clay camp that he will NOT be one of the Season 2 people. Wasn’t Taylor supposed to be around LA for this? I’m thinking Pickler might show…She’s bigtime now, though. Well, it will be a surprise, until the spoilers come along.

  • Stefunny

    So is Bono the biggest star?

    That was my initial thought before I even knew about DC singing U2.

  • skylight1219

    OOPS

  • GwendolynD

    From USA Today, what the two say about their song choices for tomorrow:

    Cook says his songs offer a chance to show off his versatility. “There’s an eclectic mix, which I’m excited about. I get to do the real intimate stuff, I get to do the rock song, and I get to do everything in between. I’m stoked.”

    Archuleta couldn’t get at least one song cleared for tonight. “Hopefully, the song I ended up with will work. I’ll do the best with it,” he says. “I have done my best to show my vocal ability. I wanted to show people why I love music, and I think I’ve managed to do that.”

  • beesims

    Remember in Season 5 when they started the finale with Carrie Underwood and all the Top 12 dressed in white singing “We Made It Through the Rain”? Wouldn’t it be fabulous if they started the Season 7 finale with Renaldo Lapuz in his white suit and silver cape singing “I Am Your Brother” joined by all the rest of the top 12 in similar attire.

  • Trina

    Cook says his songs offer a chance to show off his versatility. à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Thereà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s an eclectic mix, which Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢m excited about. I get to do the real intimate stuff, I get to do the rock song, and I get to do everything in between. Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢m stoked.à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬

    Could it be that *gasp* Clive picked a song he likes?!

  • http://americanidollowdown.blogspot.com/ Sherry L

    I am so looking forward to David Cook’s performances tomorrow. He didn’t start out as my favorite (though I always liked him), but now I think he’s one of the best to ever be on the show.

    “I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For” – that is interesting. I wouldn’t have thought of that.

    I’m so glad they got to pick different songs. I’ve always thought it sucked when they did the same song.

    And as much as Clive Davis picks are usually lame, I’m kind of looking forward to the surprise of it.

  • Jezco

    All I can say is that because U2 is SO IMMENSELY POPULAR . . . it could be the downfall of DC . . . unless he absolutely blows us away . . . that’s not really a good song to mess with though . . .

  • mocha

    The spoiler info on the Top 5 duets are confusing. Let’s hope it doesn’t mean they are bringing back the mentors from this season. The only one I wouldn’t mind would be Dolly. I don’t see newlywed Mariah coming back to sing with them, and no way do I need to see/hear ALW or Neil Diamond again. Hopefully that info isn’t correct. I would prefer duets with artist that somewhat match up with the top 5 styles, like they did in past seasons.

  • schmanda

    Archuleta couldnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t get at least one song cleared for tonight.

    That distant whirring sound you hear? Millions of Excuse Engines getting preemptively revved up…

  • PrplDva

    biggest star…hmmmm.. isnt Madonna promoting a new album?

  • J.S.G.

    I guess Lil David will not be singing the line about religion from ‘Imagine’ which contradicts the intent behind the lyric, but whatever….

    So DavidC is singing ISHFWILF just before he sings the coronation song which will be some variation of ‘I Just Found What I’m Looking For.’ Must not be a theme night.

  • bambambam

    I’d be very surprised if they don’t have Jennifer Hudson back on to sing her new single, being cast in the “Sexand the City” movie and all. She could sing “Spotlight” or dress-you-in-love whatever from the film. Seems the right timing, and helps people see that alumni do succeed.

  • CookieMonster

    I still haven’t found what I’m looking for, it’s in my playlist along with David Cook songs, and I was just thinking I hope David Cook sings this, and he did. His delivery will be worth the wait!

  • Emmalee

    I think it’s very cool — and daring — that Cook is singing a U2 song, but I would have preferred him to sing “One” or esp. “With or Without You,” since I think the latter choice has more guts to it, more highs and lows, and would have revved up to an awesome crescendo in the limited time frame. ISHFWILF is cool, but unless Cook puts new emphasis on the chorus, this song has a medium-level punch to it. But I have faith that he’ll do great with it (at least, my fingers are crossed hard for him!). I also agree that THANK “gosh” that both finalists can pick their own coronation song and hopefully change the arrangement enough to really make it their own. Last year was a disgrace; poor Blake.

    Finally, I agree about the soul-sucking power of D.A.’s performances, and the fact that he’s prone to problematic mistakes in his singing (like forgetting his lyrics over and over and getting away with it!) — along with all those dreadful runs that are the hallmark of inexperience and over-singing a song.

  • CookieMonster

    And I hope he won’t get nervous singing it as he probably has a high regard for this song. :)

  • Jezco

    J.S.G. . . .

    David A has performed all of Imagine before . . .so I don’t know what you’re talking about . . .

  • Emmalee

    Jezco, I think CookieMonster is talking about David Cook singing U2. Cook seems to be able to control his nerves really, really well, which is another sign of his maturity and readiness for a professional career. D.A. needs a bit of seasoning still, in my opinion.

  • RollTide

    Drools at the thought of Cook singing U2. I’m a happy Cooktard. :D

  • Emmalee

    Go, COOKIE, GO!

  • sumidol

    I hope hope hope hope that Bono will be there with Cook, I know that I have been saying for weeks now that Bono or Sting or Corgin could lend AI the credibility a rocker would need. That would be fantastic for Cooks and AI’s image in promoting an American Idol Rocker!!!!!

  • gumby

    Cook says his songs offer a chance to show off his versatility. à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Thereà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s an eclectic mix, which Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢m excited about. I get to do the real intimate stuff, I get to do the rock song, and I get to do everything in between. Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢m stoked.à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬

    Drools at thought of Cook getting “to do the real intimate stuff.” Oh please let that be “I’m on Fire” by Springsteen. Clive’s picked Springsteen before, so there’s a glimmer of hope…

    ETA: Totally agree with you Emmalee about “With or Without You”–much better choice for showing off his range. Only problem is it takes so long to build to climax that maybe it wouldn’t work in the 90 second time frame.

  • thesheriff

    Do they get alittle longer than 90 secs for the final? They should. Why not 3 minutes for at least one?! Or just sing two songs at 3 minutes – would hate to see a bunch of commercials go to waste though…geesh!

    Maybe Alicia Keys performs with Syesha? Cook with Carey? ummmm

  • Emmalee

    Gumby — I timed portions of “With or Without You,” and if he started about a minute in (obviously past most of the almost minute-long all-instrumental intro portion) and then also cut out about 30 seconds of lyrics in the beginning, which just sort of loops and repeats melodically anyway, he could do a very good rendition in just about 2 min. or less and include all the energetic climax. But, yeah, ISHFWILF is still pretty great, and was probably easier to cut for the time frame allowed (they should be getting a little more time per song, right, now that there’s only 2 of them singing?)

    Speaking of (musical) climaxes, I, too am VERY interested in seeing what sort of “real intimate stuff” he’s going to do! “I’m on Fire” would be very, very steamy, and very hot indeed :) Any other similar choice would be well received . . . . :) He definitely would have it over D.A. if he could pull out a really “intimately” (i.e. sexually) charged song. I read somewhere that Daughtry sang Led Zeppelin’s “A Whole Lotta Love” on the Idol Live Tour two years ago, and I’m curious to know if they made him cut the line, “Way, way down inside, I’m gonna give you my love,
    I’m gonna give you every inch of my love.” Hee, hee :) Talk about steamy!

    Jezco, if I’m not mistaken, DA’s version of Imagine left out the first two verses:

    Imagine there’s no heaven
    It’s easy if you try
    No hell below us
    Above us only sky
    Imagine all the people
    Living for today…

    Imagine there’s no countries
    It isn’t hard to do
    Nothing to kill or die for
    And no religion too
    Imagine all the people

    You’re right . . . when he sang it earlier this season he only sang the third verse because it is his favorite and, due to time constraints, he only had time for one verse.

    What I was saying is that he has sung the whole song before — not on Idol — he’s sung it on Good Morning Utah and other times as well.

  • choup

    The FOX reporter said the Idols will be singing with one of the celebrity mentors who appeared during the season. That would be either, Mariah Carey, Neil Diamond, Dolly Parton or Andrew Lloyd Webber. Who would be the 5th mentor?

    5th mentor?
    There’s 12 contestants, it’s probably a group number with one of the four mentors.

    Hi newbies. If you haven’t already, please read the guidelines:

    http://mjsbigblog.com/?page_id=1172

    I don’t mind some fangirling. However, if it goes overboard, I’ll step in. My blog isn’t a fansite, and I like to keep the talk focused on the show.

    I especially dislike talk that’s sexually suggestive. That fantasy stuff is better left to your fangroups. Thank you.

    The reporter made it sound like individual contestants would be paired up with a mentor. She may not have worded it very well. Perhaps it is a group number.

  • Lisa

    One thing I can report on from our local news is this. When the reporter talked to David earlier (they did not show him in this one) he had told her he was not nervous, says he is ready to perform.

    Have I fallen down the rabbit hole????? Where the hell am I???

    *YAY for dancing and pointy poses!!!! There better be at least one MJ/DC chest bump DAMNIT!!!!)

  • skylight1219

    Oh lands, Jason doing a lot of dancing. I think I’ll cover my eyes. Poor kid!

  • weelassie

    Cookie is singing one of my all time favorite songs. that could be good or not. With or without you, i think, would have been a better choice but i’m not going to fret cuz i loved his version of Hello and ABMB and who would’ve thunk it? I guess there a plusses and minuses to picking a new song to one you haven’t yet done. A reprise-you already know it and it has already been arranged, etc. Minus-you already did it and there is something with which to compare it. Taylor did Levon early in the season and it was wonderful, the reprise, imo, wasn’t as good. A new song, plus-it is new, fresh, and something to which we look forward to hearing. Minus-it might fall flat. So, do u take your best performance of the season and hope magic strikes twice or offer a new song and take the risk of it going astray-cookies second song last week.

  • http://www.myspace.com/rjveritas MrRJ

    So you’ve fallen down a rabbit hole,
    Funny, I was thinking of a pole

    I heard there was to be lots of dancin’
    Those Idols a-singing and a-prancin”

    You only had to say pretty please
    And Nigel, he makes sure there is cheese!

  • http://everyopinion.blogspot.com Terrie

    Drools at thought of Cook getting à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“to do the real intimate stuff.à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬  Oh please let that be à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢m on Fireà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬  by Springsteen. Cliveà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s picked Springsteen before, so thereà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s a glimmer of hopeà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ¦

    IIRC, there are only three degrees of separation between Cookie and Springsteen. I read on several sites that Little Steven Van Zandt of the E Street Band and his wife donated tickets and backstage passes for upcoming Springsteen concerts as a fundraiser to help pay for Adam Cook’s trip to the finale. Not that this tenuous connection will get The Boss to the finale, but what an amazing shocker of a duet that would be.

  • fannatic

    Well you know guys… just be glad he didn’t pick “With or Without You”. The song starts off too low and he is better at singing using his upper register. So he is going to nail “I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For” since it starts out high.

  • http://airincaol.com coco

    Poor Elvis.

  • http://inkdbylilyanna.com carolina

    coco my sweet — Elvis is alive and well but still refuses to disclose his exact location.

    Personally, I think he’s in your guest room.

  • Grammie Kari

    I loved what AI did with Elvis and Celine. It was breathtaking…

    I am wondering if they will do something with the Beatles, in some way bringing back John and George. I so, the big star would be Paul McCartney. The second person would be Ringo Starr. OMG, I just cannot imagine how this would be handled.

    Oh great, lots of singing and dancing? I wonder if Jason is ready? Oh, I do look forward to seeing DA and DC perform. It sounds like it WILL be a terrific final two.

  • Tony

    Hmmm. Archuleta is singing the song that made him the front-runner. Smart choice…..Jeff. lol

    I usually hate Idol reprises. They’re never as good as when they initially performed them.

    And I guess this is the first time where the final two were both 1) neither in the bottom 2/3 and 2) pretty much have equal chances of winning….although I think Archuleta’s gonna pull this one out.

  • ettacandy

    “biggest star in the world”… this could be Carrie. or JHud. Or Daughtry. I think Nigel would be inclined to pimp an alumni, especially one still managed by “the home team”. So, I’m betting the “Biggest Star” refers to Carrie or Daughtry.

    Another option: Sir Paul McCartney. More Beatles songs. I know he doesn’t own the publishing anymore but it seems AI had some sort of “deal” on those songs so… I’ll toss it out there.

    Duets… I have no idea what the Fox News reporter was saying (and neither does she). I am betting that “celebrity mentor” doesn’t mean one of the mentors who appeared on the show this year, but simply a musical celebrity of some sort. A girl can dream… right?

    On that topic… still hoping both boys bring it for tonight’s performances.

  • dogncatmom

    I really like the fact that Cook is taking a risk with U2; the man has cajones!

  • calimari

    I think Archie could crash & burn w/ “Imagine.” It’s hard to capture something that was positively received the first time around (although I hated it). And it’s a slow song – if both of his other ones are slow, he could be boooooring.

  • t2

    My only hopes for the finale:

    1. They give Michael Johns some screen time and let him actually sing more than one line. Chance of this happening — 20%. I don’t think TPTB will want him highlighted in any way.

    2. Michael Johns IS NOT signing with 19A-z and affiliates. Chance of this happening 20%. I think 19 will scoop him up and DeGarmo him.

    Chances of me be happy with the finale: 20% … see above.

    The setup for the win goes to Cook and I don’t expect any other outcome. I like him well enough, so good on him.

  • hollygo9

    I think Archie could crash & burn w/ à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Imagine.à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    I think if you love Archie, you’ll love it. If you don’t, you won’t. I don’t think it will sway any new undecideds considering they played snips of it last week during his homecoming package.
  • erennick
    Can’t wait for tonight! And it’s sounding promising for tomorrow, unlike last year’s dreadful finale.
    DCFTW
  • bean99
    I think they’ll give Michael a little screen time, T2. They know he’s very popular and looks good which never hurts. I figure if nothing else Michael will inject the spark they’ve missed in the group numbers and there’s always the chance of another chest bump. :laugh_tb: I also think if Michael does sign with 19, they’re not going to Bo Bice him or whatever because it’s a waste of their money. It’s to their advantage if he does well.
    I’m happy that the idols are coming back for a group number. Too bad we have to listen to Carrie yet again. I’m so tired of her.
    Biggest star – Paul McCartney or Bono?
  • SpenserJ
    He’s probably doing at least 2 medleys, maybe one duet and a short solo (I hope). The boy must have been wishing he made it to the finals instead when he first learned he would need to learn not just 3 songs but double that number. LOL
    I’m very excited, too! Wooo! :D It sucks that I would probably miss the live broadcast here, though, since I would be on the road (from out of town) at the time. :s Aah…replays will just have to do it for me. ;)
    This morning on my local Fox channel, reporters interviewing some of the Top 10. She asked every one of them who they thought would win – apparently someone put the kabash on them picking a fave – all of them responded that they are not allowed to say who their favorite is.
    BUT, MJ, after being asked the question said the following: “I’m not allowed to say who I think will win. BUT DAVID COOK IS MY MAN.”
    Justin Guarini (sp?) when asked the same question, said “I work for Fox and we’re not allowed to say who we think will win.”
    I can’t remember this in the past – I remember exiled Idols being able to say who they wanted/expected to win.
    I still have Kalan Porter’s version of ISHFWILF in one of my folders. That boy can sang!! I hope Cook can do it half as well, then I’ll be happy.
