They’re making Melinda sing the same song Angie sang for sudden death? WTF??? I hope she slays, so far she owns Angie on Jessie J covers.

Lazaro is a train wreck waiting to happen.

Zoanette is gonna commit murder in a bad way, blood will be shed, lots of it!

  • sporkle

Really, TPTB? Pitting 2 female singers against each other with the same song again?

Also, Zoanette is going to go to SLAY that song. And not in a good way.

  • Damien Roberts

Poor Melinda, good song for Juliana though.

  • raya

Lazaro doing Kelly Clarkson? I know the producers had the ultimate say on who does what, but is he trying to get sent home?  I’m trying to picture that being anything but a trainwreck.

Predictable that the show is pitting two female singers against each other.  Though the only good thing for Melinda is that unlike last season at least the singers aren’t performing on the same night, so some viewers probably will have no recollection of what Angie sang anyway.  That said, I’m sure the judges or someone else will remind us.

  • ??EvHeaD??ozzy??

Why the hell did Idol go either so old-fashioned OR too mainstream that it’s weird???? How can you expect guys to sing Stronger or Titanium and what is the use of sining songs from 50s 60s 70s??? (this week this only seems to be the case for the guys, as it was the case for the girls last week, and I didn’t watch the guys yet)

For the girls, WHY are they plotting against Melinda??? I really hope she kicks Angela’s ass, as it’s quite sure that they are routing for Angela, and if she happens to win she will try to go Christian or something, a market which has a lot less profit than mainstream… Melinda is better anyway IMO… I have been her subscriber on youtube for the last 3-4 years and was delighted to find out she auditioned to Idol last year, and this year as well.

  • wkstrack

I can’t tell if what they are doing with Melinda is the same thing that TPTB did to Elise and Jen. Having the same song choice, etc. Supposedly, Melinda was one of the better girls during rehearsal. But you can’t go on what a source says. At least they didn’t put Melinda and Angie on the same night and the audience isn’t voting like last season.

  • mjsbigblog

I head a completely different spoiler for Lazaro, which I am not allowed to reveal yet.

Who knows tho, maybe he changed his song.

ETA: The song I heard makes more sense, but there is a reason why he might have decided to change it.

  • irockhard

That said, I’m sure the judges or someone else will remind us.

UGH UGH UGH!!! Nigel, wake up! Melinda is your best shot for a legit pop star I’ve seen on this show in years! Angie is too vanilla for anything but CCM. Jimmy please talk some sense into him!

I really hope she kicks Angela’s ass

  • fuzzywuzzy

“Lazaro Arbos – “Stronger (What Doesn’t Kill You)” by Kelly Clarkson (2011)”

Y.I.K.E.S! If this is true, then Lazaro really doesn’t have a clue about choosing songs that suit him.

  • raya

That’s interesting.  I wonder how late in the game they were allowed to change their song, if they were allowed at all.  Like did Lazaro start working with the vocal coaches on one song and then was given the opportunity to switch once they realized it wasn’t working?

  • irockhard

Really, TPTB? Pitting 2 female singers against each other with the same song again?

I seriously don’t understand how they think pulling a stunt like this is gonna help their chances for a girl winner.

  • girlygirltoo

I’m glad to see mainly recent songs, anyway. There are a couple of WTF choices, but that’s SOP for Idol.

As for Melinda doing the same song Angela performed last week:  Melinda is actually more of a pop artist than Angela (in my opinion, anyway), and I was unimpressed with Angela’s version of the Jessie J song (the judges seemed to be as well, since they focused all their comments on the original song she’d done the previous week) — so I won’t be all that surprised if Melinda does a better job on this song than Angela did.

  • irockhard

That didn’t stop James, Casey and Scotty from saying no to Jimmy’s song choices.

Lazaro already sang Lady Gaga’s Edge of Glory so he appears to be knowledgeable on current music, it’s the old stuff (eg: Beach Boys) he seems to be clueless about.

  • fuzzywuzzy

So each contestant submits 5 songs and the producers choose the song? There’s no reason why they have to pick the same song for 2 contestants unless they want to “set up” one of them. Geez…

  • fantoo1

It won’t matter that Melinda is singing the same song as Angela, for one they are on different nights, two, we won’t be voting for them so it won’t matter, and I hear she is doing a completely different version and is doing well in rehearsals. This is no different than when people pick the same songs for Hollywood week-remember all those guys that sang Jar Of Hearts? This is a completely different situation than Jen/Elise.

  • Pat S

TheIdolPad also reported how most of them were doing:

Candice, Cristabel, Zoanette (yes, HER), Breanna, Melinda, and Juliana were doing the best for the girls according to the source. Nick, Burnell, Vincent, Mathenee, David, and Bryant are best for the guys. Cortez and Aubrey were struggling. Lazaro is the only reported trainwreck.

  • Brittany Keener

I’m not sure why everyone is freaking out over Melinda’s song choice. How many people in America (not the hardcare idol fan base….aka YOU) will actually remember that someone did it the week before? They are not directly competing against each other at the moment. Elise and Jen did theirs the same night…not a week apart. Besides, Melinda already did a Jesse J song and it was fantastic. And it’s not like the judges actually critiqued Angela’s performance last week (they were still focused on her original).

  • b_james

Is this for real?  Some of these can’t be for real.

  • elliegrll

Bryant Tadeo – “Heaven” by Bryan Adams (1983)

I always thought that this was one of the songs that people were given at the last minute, when the producers couldn’t clear their original song.

Based on their youtube videos, this group seems to have a lot more potential and talent than the guys who performed last week.

  • durbesque

The BOYS are listed first.  Does that mean they go on Wednesday?  That would mean I have to wait until Thursday for Zoanette.  Say it isn’t so.

  • HermeticallySealed

They aren’t pitting anyone against each other, though. It’s not a voting round, and in addition, they aren’t even on the same night.  The vast majority of people watching aren’t likely to even remember who sang what last week.

Really, this is such a non-issue at this point in the show.

  • PGH_Idoloonie

On the guys side, I’m really worried that they’ll put Lazaro through even if he’s noticeably behind the pack.  If he rocks whatever he does, so be it.  But I’m already preparing myself for a frustrating week.

Mainly because I’ve been recently drawn towards Mathenee, who I think is on the cusp a bit- but I believe he has a ton of potential.  He’s a good dancer- hopefully he doesn’t Jon Peter Lewis (too goofy) or Chris Daughtry (too bland) on A Little Less Conversation.  That choice makes me nervous.
I’m also very very much in Nick Boddington’s corner. I hope he smooth sails through this week.

  • PGH_Idoloonie

I think so, too. Though it’s strange.  It would have been more of an issue if the judges even paid a little attention to Angela’s song choice– “What a fabulous Jesse J song!!” “That choice was awesome!!”

…far from it–as they only talked about her original- as many have noted about last week.

  • ellen8

Best for me will be Cristabel and Candice (song choice).
Expect a lot of drama from Zoanette singing Circle of Life.

Personally, I don’t like guys singing Stronger – I like to think of Kelly’s song as a “girl power” song !! Worst for me will be “Little Less Conversation” unless he slows it down. It’s just not a good song imo !!

  • Jenna

This is true but it’s just annoying the producers would let things like this happen when they have final say on their song choices.

  • Sassycatz

Their song list must consist of 10 songs if they have to have people repeating them already. You’d think the producers would want to mix things up a little or are they setting it up for the judges to say, “well, you did it fine, but Angie performed it better?” (Of course they never really complimented Angie on that song. Are they going to go back and do it now, fearing that she might have slipped a little in the audience’s estimation?)

  • Larc

Expect a lot of drama from Zoanette singing Circle of Life.

What I won’t expect from her is good organization and good pitch control.  Her best aired performance so far was a total trainwreck, so this will likely be that bad… or worse.

  • mjsbigblog

I’m hearing these song spoilers are not accurate, FWIW.

  • No Thanks

I’m putting money on Zoanette on pulling a stuffed Simba doll out of her bra and holding it up during the chorus.

  • tigervixxxen

The chances for the best songs are Titanium and the slowed down Only Girl. It’s such a shame the producers saddle them with some awful choices when song choice is extremely important to survival in the competition. I don’t know what’s so hard to understand to choose a song with a strong melody that stands up to either tweaking or creative arrangement. The audience is sick to death of the old songs, doesn’t recognize the teen R&B songs and doing Alicia Keys or Kelly Clarkson is a death sentence. Oh well, good luck to them.

  • ptebwwong

irockhard: I seriously don’t understand how they think pulling a stunt like this is gonna help their chances for a girl winner.

Yes, it hurts Melinda’s chances. I think Angela’s chances are already going to take a hit because she’s being majorly pimped as the best girl.

But if a girl wins this year, I wouldn’t be surprised if it’s neither of these two ladies. Right now, my pick is Janelle. Country girl which we all know the country fanbase is strong on Idol. One of the stronger girls this year, but not pimped as much as Angela.

  • ellen8

Ok you wrote what I was really thinking – LOL – in my head the word “drama” meant all you said !!

  • jammasta

Can we kinda just forget this week and just put Nick, Burnell, Janelle, Candice, Rachel, and Zoanette (for the lulz) through?

Last week had everyone I cared about. All I really care about this week is Janelle, Nick, and Candice (I could do with or without the other 3 I listed). It would be nice for Burnell to make it over Curtis, though. And just replace Tenna and Elijah with Janelle and Nick, and then Candice will take the place of either Amber or Adriana, whoever does weak next week. Then the top 10 would be Paul, Nick, Burnell, Devin, Charlie, Angela, Kree, Amber/Adriana, Janelle, and Candice.

  • chillj

Is there a male I need to watch on boy night?

  • Taylor

I’m putting money on Zoanette on pulling a stuffed Simba doll out of her bra and holding it up during the chorus.

Yes, please! I would vote my fingers to the bone for something like this!

  • Taylor

Does it really matter what song Lazaro sings? He’s going through to the final ten guys, no matter what.

  • elliegrll

I hope that the producers aren’t trying to create a fake controversy between Melinda and Angela.  It’s the type of thing that Nigel and Ken would do, and as usual it smells of sexism.

These two women are very different women, and I wouldn’t like to see the producers try to turn Melinda into Angela.  Melinda has shown signs that she is both a singer and a performer, and that she isn’t afraid to do songs that aren’t 40 year old slow ballads.  The producers need to let both women show their personalities, just like they do with the guys, and not do something that will only lead to people disliking both of them.

  • LeahKittyS

“Is there a male I need to watch on boy night?”

Nick Boddington. He had a breakout performance of “Stars” during the solo round. He’s the only lock for the Top 10 Guys now, I’d say. Based on performances and producer promotion, I would also call Lazaro a lock, but they may decide his severe stuttering could stall production.

  • LeahKittyS

I agree; as of now the odds are in favor of a girl winning. My guess is this year’s queen will not be Angela, Candice, or Janelle, because of the heavy producer promotion, but that promotion will get them all on the tour. Remember the power vocal trinity of Adam, Danny, and Lil in Season 8? Heavily promoted, none of them won, but they all made tour. And that was such an awesome tour! (Sorry, I digress.)
Anyway, I think our Crown Princess is someone who can pull off memorably good/great performances with just the right amount of hype from the judges/producers. Kree is the leader of that pack right now, but still, if Adriana and Amber can carry over what they did last week into the voting rounds, or if Cristabel and Melinda can live up to their Hollywood levels, we may be in for a sweet surprise.

  • ptebwwong

I like Kree. But I think she will get the same backlash Carly Smithson had (too much professional experience). She is friends with members of Pistol Annie’s (Miranda Lambert’s girl group) and has been working in the country community for a number of years.

The other thing I’m worried about for Kree is not enough personality. Female contestants who have gotten far in Idol history have usually had a lot of personality – good or bad.

  • Sassycatz

The other thing I’m worried about for Kree is not enough personality.
Female contestants who have gotten far in Idol history have usually had a
lot of personality – good or bad.

Kree is reminding me of Eeyore, and that’s not good for any contestant, male or female.

  • elliegrll

The other thing I’m worried about for Kree is not enough personality.

My worry is that the perception that she lacks personality is going to come from the types of songs that she’s Assigned.  I think that she has the potential to come across as being current, but I’m willing to bet that she is going to fall victim to the producers’ belief that every female contestant should sound like she’s 50 years old.

  • irockhard

TBF they did try to create fake rivalry between PP and Colton last season, so they do sometimes pull BS like this with the guys too.

Oh and who can forget the fake “chemistry” between Colton and Skylar? Ugh Nigel, just let these kids be themselves!

  • Elise’s EliTe

My two favorite guys are the only ones not revealed? Dang. Nick and Gurpreet are awesome. Anyways, I feel like Titanium will go horrible because it’s a pop song and songs like that are hard to organize while still staying to the original. I hope Lazaro’s gone. But the rest of the guys seem good, I think that they put all the bad ones first on purpose. I’m leaning towards (Nick and Gurpreet) Josh, Burnell, and Bryant based on the songs, but I’m open to changing those.

With the girls, I really like Melinda and Candace. For me, Cristabel should not have chosen “No One” because 1) She’s too much like Alicia Keys already, the comparisons are really going to start now. 2) It was sang last year by Elise with heavy praise, and it’s not a good idea to sing a song that a contestant did great on in the previous season. I think that I will also like Zoanette, Jett, and Janelle. There’s no way they’ll put through Rachel if they want Janelle to go very far. If both happen to make it and both do amazing in top 20, people will split votes, and then neither will make it. Aubrey and Breanna could either be a trainwreck or a legendary performance, we’ll see. With Juliana, not sure if her voice is strong enough to impress the judges with that song. I think she’ll be cut. I’m pretty sure no matter what, Candace is going through.

  • CB40

These girls LOVE Jessie J! :)

I think Lazaro is a goner trying to sing Kelly. Stronger is a horrible choice for him, he should sing “You Sang To Me” or something.

  • LeahKittyS

There was chemistry between Colton and Skylar, just not the romantic chemistry the producers were concocting. But I agree, fake rivalries are a wasted investment; the contestants say so themselves they don’t like it. None of them take it seriously as a competition, and the truth always comes out on the summer tour: they’re just a big, happy family of people trying to make it in music. I’d rather the producers promote that. (Fat chance, I know.)

  • jammasta

Unless Lazaro’s performance or the performances around him are shit, he’s through. If his performance is crap, he might not make it through (if there’s not a significant amount of crap around him). But, we’ve seen it with Charlie and Elijah. So… yeah.

  • Aakash Mansukhani

I think Gurpreet is singing “That’s Life” by Frank Sinatra, according to his twitter feed…

  • mjsbigblog

Again, that particular spoiler is wrong.

  • Incipit

    Rumored Song Spoilers

Interesting list. Full of toast and a side order of cheese, IMO. I don’t know this Quarter-Final Crowd at all, their vocals or their styles – but I could venture a guess on who will be going home; just going by the song picks I have four candidates with the guys..and two more possibilities.

Whoever has a done-too-much-lately song, like “Titanium”, or a nothing special
song like “Heaven” – or an already famous song or one made notable by an
Idol that they don’t have the vocals to match, let alone create a
different take for, like – “Stronger” or “Imagine” – toast. The two
people who picked classic songs may be trying to twist them, else – why
bother? But as many times as those two have been done –  if they can’t
successfully create  something interesting with “Fever” or “A Little
Less Conversation” – they are also headed for toast. And if they don’t
have an idea for a different ‘take’ – then what were these songs doing
on their list of Five Songs for the producers to choose from?

Also, if “Imagine” and “Stronger” actually came from someone’s misguided
list – and the producers picked them, instead of warning about the
pitfalls there  – then I figure they want those persons gone.

The Female side – a bit more tricksy – but there’s a certain inevitability about seeing “Natural Woman”, and “Skyscraper” on the list, and there they are – someone was bound to do them. “Circle of Life” can be made into the Cheesiest Cheese that ever Shredded Cheddar – and probably will be – the person doing “Sweet Dreams” is probably history – and “Only Girl in the World”, slowed down ?? – The last thing that list needs is ‘slowed down’, IMO.

Can’t call some of the other songs because I never heard them sung before maybe they are not the genre I listen to? – hope the majority of the audience isn’t in the same boat as me…although – it may not be a bad thing. Someone listening to a song for the first time, without the original artist for comparison may do some folks a favor. *snerk*

Now that’s just based on the song choices, not the singers, most of them I never heard – and probably unreliable as hell, but I was bored.

OTOH, I see three people with *TBD  – I’d guess two of them are going through, no matter what the choice actually is – Janelle Arthur, Nick Boddington. TPTB want them. JMO.

  • Jake W.

Already sick of Candace. Send her home because I don’t want to listen to those damn whitney, celine, mariah songs. She’s so predictable.

  • method2madness

You sound racist. And THAT is predictable.

  • Ryan

My god it’s one song choice for the first round. Calm down. And btw if she sings flawlessly will it really matter THAT much this early on?

  • Kariann Hart

I love this choice:  Mathenee Treco – “A Little Less Conversation” by Elvis Presley (1968).  A friend (or relative) on Twitter said Mathenee DOES Rock.

“Fever” is another great choice because of the variety of ways it can be sung.  However, the singer must be good.

I like some of the current songs, but my preference is older material.  I would be shocked if Candace doesn’t make the TOP 10.  She has a really strong fan base.

  • richiek88

You do realize this is the only time Candice actually has sung an older song on the show and they should send her home because of that. Should they have sent Adriana home too last week because she sang an Aretha song?

Anyway I can read between the lines and it’s not her song choice you have a problem with it as someone else pointed out.

  • Mafalda Abreu

OMG if Zoanette does the “sinhaaaasebenhaaam sababitibaba” and sings it like JHudson, I believe that might be a very interesting performance. Are TPTB giving her the pimp spot? LOL

  • irockhard

Should they have sent Adriana home too last week because she sang an Aretha song?

That and for being a boring generic pageant-bot. I thought the point of this show is to find a star who can make it in the current music market.

  • Landon Cox

Ugh, can Imagine just go away from reality singing competitions?

  • Mafalda Abreu

I will make my predictions for tonight (GIRLS):

Candice, Janelle, Cristabel and Zoanette. The 5th girl will probably be some of those who didn’t have a lot of airtime. They need a controversial cut and I’m afraid it will be Melinda :-(

  • julesb2183

Good choices for the girls. bad for the guys.

  • Jake W.

All of yall saying I’m racist are so damn wrong it isn’t funny. Quit putting accusations where it isn’t needed. I hate those songs because they have been done to death on idol. I don’t care who sings them. Anybody else I’d send home as well. GTFO me.

  • Jon Glass

What is Janelle singing? Am I the only who can’t stand her? PHONEY AS HECK.
