American Idol 12 Spoilers – Hollywood Shakeup?

With TV shows like The Voice and X Factor entering and diluting the singing competition market, and the continuing slide of American Idol’s ratings, it would only be logical for producers to be planning a few major tweaks–if not a full scale overhaul-of the new American Idol season.

The Idol Hollywood rounds are beginning next week, and what I’m hearing is that contestants are being instructed to show up on different days. Some are set to arrive in Los Angeles on Monday, December 10. Others on Thursday December 13. Hollywood is scheduled to end on Tuesday, December 18.

However, the separate arrival dates don’t appear to be random. It looks like the boys and girls are being split up into separate groups. The boys arrive on Monday, the girls on Thursday. But this is just speculation at this point, based on a small sample of contestants. Could the boys and girls be competing against each other for the first couple of days? I will update you all with details as soon as I know more!

Also, no word yet on a “Las Vegas” round. Perhaps the contestants will be staying in Los Angeles for the entire round. Again…as soon as I know you’ll know! Stay tuned.

won’t it get the contestants in trouble to spoil this now?

Didn’t I read that they’d sent over 200 people to Hollywood this year? That’d be a lot more than usual, right? I thought 150 was the top end before. It wouldn’t be surprising if with a new panel and a group of judges that may not be unanimous they’d want to give contestants as many chances as possible before cutting them. I’m pretty sure I remember that happening in JLo/Steven Tyler’s 1st year too.

So, maybe they’ve got so many people in Hollywood they have to insert a new cut and that 1st cut is going to be after round of competing against people of the same gender.

I believe the smallest was S3 with 117 and the highest was S10 with 327.

Last year they were also over 300 contestants in HW

Oh, never mind my theory then. I knew I should have looked up the numbers from past years before posting. Thanks for the real info!

  • SullyD

Last season  they sent 300+ contestants to HW, according to IdolPad:

Anyway, I agree that this round might be people of the same gender competing against each other. I actually think they could keep doing this until the top 24.

    ETA: I didn’t see Brittany’s post, heh.

I’m hearing the number is about 300ish this year.

  • fantoo1

Interesting. I’m excited for some change!

  • fuzzywuzzy

It will be interesting to see what type of male contestants they send through to the voting rounds this year. Will they pointedly ignore sending through any WGWGs? lol

  • elliegrll

It’s like three hundred of them, so how will tptb know who is leaking the information.

  • julesb2183

still, it pays to be careful at this point. if stuff leaks right now, they might change it to keep is surprised.

  • fantoo1

Based on the spoilers I have seen so far, most of the guitar playing males have been ethnic. I have a feeling we could be seeing a diverse cast both racially and in styles this year. Last year it was all white girls except Jessica, so I especially hope the girls will be more diverse.

  • Sassycatz

I’d like to see less youngsters on the big stage. Most — not all — are too malleable and really don’t know or can’t fight for their own voice or style. Plus, I don’t like how they sex up the 16 year old girls in skin tight, short dresses and stiletto heels.

  • Robert D’Angio

This actually makes perfect sense in my mind. If in the end they are going to select 24 finalists with a break down of 12/12 based on gender, it would make sense for them to keep the groups separated while they narrow that down. I am actually surprised they never did that before.

  • LeahKittyS

Something occurred to me as I was reading this. Didn’t on one season of “So You Think You Can Dance,” they have one male and one female winner? How would we feel if that happened here? I don’t think that’s what they’re up to with this split, but it would be an interesting twist (and very reminiscent of The Hunger Games with its mid-game rule change. Seriously, check out those books, or at least see the movie.) Hey, at least that way, people couldn’t complain about gender bias!

  • Allison

But both a male & female winner would dilute the competition aspect of the show.

  • girlygirltoo

Given the success of P2? They might send through all WGWGs, lol

  • girlygirltoo

I wouldn’t want a guy and a girl winner. That dilutes the whole point of having one Idol. I don’t mind the idea of having the guys compete against the guys and the girls against the girls in the HW rounds, though. The only  real concern for me is that if one gender has way more really good contestants than the other, you could end up with a really unbalanced Top 24. But that’s happened before, at least to some extent…

Also, do they still have the non-disclosure clause in the contracts, so they can boot you off the show if they find out you’ve been leaking info?

  • inmyslumber

Wonder if they’re doing what they did with SYTYCD this past year and crowning two winners…

  • Anny_nanny

If the winner will be the two it will be as a big poster “Girl can’t compete on equal terms”. Girls were in the Top 2 of the last three years and I can not say that they did a lot of noise after the season and surpassed the winners. And I liked Crystal. This is a competition. Ugh!

  • Sassycatz

What’s the point of having two winners? That wouldn’t stop them from putting the most PR effort and money behind whichever contestant they prefer. Even with only one winner, they do that.

  • fantoo1

    I hope not.

  • Miz

Is Hollywood in Pasadena again this year? (That always cracks me up.)

  • irockhard

Speaking of spoilers, here’s the S12 cleared songs list:

WTF at “Russian Picnic – Classic Russian Folk Song”???

  • SullyD

I hope they’ll be able to clean more songs as the season progresses/if the a contestant make a request.

  • John S

Very interesting. As far as newer music goes, I see One Direction, Karmin, Carly Rae Jespen, The Wanted, and new songs like Home, Where Have You Been, Blow Me One Last Kiss, Starships, Die Young, and of course, all the Katy Perry songs. I also see Cher Lloyd on there.

  • John S

I’m sure they will, there’s actually songs that aren’t on that list, even though they have been sang on the show before.

  • irockhard

The problem is unless they scrap the dated themes, we’ll only get to hear songs like that on 1 or 2 nights.

  • Jason Scott

    How legit is that list?

  • Wally.

I already know who the winner is, if they aren’t cut.

  • John S

They should do more broad themes like love songs, guilty pleasures, songs less than a year old, etc.

  • fuzzywuzzy

    Is “Dylan” a WGWG? lol

  • fuzzywuzzy

I think that IdolPad is a pretty reliable source for spoilers.

  • milwlovesadam

One boy and one girl makes no sense to me at all. Especially since the Grammy’s got rid of the male/female pop vocal category and made it just one vocal nomination.

  • heike hoffmann

Yes, I would like to see more “really” women like Elise or Erica.

  • fantoo1

Just like Paul McDonald was, right? Lol.

I believe Nigel(yeah I know) when he said Phillip was NOT the top vote getter every week. I am convinced having a great coronation song sealed his win. Yes, I believe WGWG aren’t invincible.

  • Incipit

Thanks, irockhard. I had the one from last season – this was an interesting read – just in the “A”‘s so far.

This one has 18 Adele tunes – 17, if you don’t count the one w/Etta James, and 13 from Alicia Keys, solo and otherwise.

But while I don’t want to know the theme that applies to someone using a song of Weird Al’s  – I ‘Really’ don’t want to know where “May the Bird of Paradise Fly Up Your Nose” fits in. Unless they are doing a theme tribute to late night TV hosts over the years – like Karnac the Magnificent on Johnny Carson. That was his trademark phrase. Heh. OTOH. – We could get “Foggy Day”, since Carson sang that on his show. I haven’t gotten to the “G”‘s for Gershwin yet.

Always worth a *chuckle* to see how it applies.

  • Wally.

They got the all the HW contestants right last year.

    Yes, Dylan is a WGWG.

  • mchcat

I seem to remember May the Bird………….. was a country comedy song by Little Jimmy Dickens (maybe)

  • Incipit

Yeah, mchcat, that’s the artist listed in the PDF. But seriously? Someone doing that song on Idol – I doubt it.

OTOH, I was being facetious about the Gershwin. There is no Gershwin on the list. Although, if anyone could pull off “Foggy Day” and actually do it justice, that would be a talent that would have MY attention!

  • fantoo1

Interesting fact for this season-Nikki McKibbin’s son auditioned!

  • sabbia

There are a splattering of some great old rock tunes on that list. And I only had time to skim the first several pages quickly.

Can you imagine someone on Idol singing Bad Company’s “Feel Like Making Love” or Blue Oyster Cult “Don’t Fear The Reaper”? Talk about changing Idol’s image. lol

  • irockhard

LOL now that would be something!

I for one don’t mind the oldies but I’m tired of hearing the same ones every season, and it’s not even the cool ones like those examples you mentioned.

They apparently did a Stones theme for S9 but I didn’t watch that season, I heard it wasn’t great, it would’ve worked better with the S10 group.

  • dy

LOL hearing that Nikki M’s son auditioned, well, now I feel old!
