Update! Call 323-982-8897 to hear a snip of Allison’s new single!

Allison just twittered: Aight homies you guys wanna hear a sneak preview of my NEW SINGLE?! Call me to hear it at 323-982-8897. Ohhh shnaaaapssss.

Just listened to the snip.   It’s definitely pop with a hard rock edge.   A heavy electric guitar riff introduces the song. Allison rocks out majorly–think old school Heart and Joan Jett. I think I’m gonna like!

There been a rumor floating around twitter that Allison Iraheta’s new single is going to be leaking on the internet soon.

And as it turns out the rumor is true!   The name of the song is “Friday I’ll Be Over U” and   Popeater WILL be debuting the red-haired rockers single on Monday!

According to my source, it was supposed to happen today, but has been pushed back to Monday.

Wow, this is great. Can’t wait to hear what the sound of her album will be.

  • suebrody

That’s great news!! And Monday makes a lot more sense than Saturday.

  • will

You checked your sources (plural) MJ? What a novel idea!

  • HotHotHot

Yea, Allison!!! Can’t wait to hear it!!!

  • unique28v

Wow. JIVE really gets their artists singles out waaaaaaay before the album debuts.

  • lucy

Cool. Hope it’s great — would love to see my little rocker girl succeed!

  • alxsavage

The happier news tend to be the unexpected ones, I can’t wait to hear it!

  • CathyMK

Ooh, can’t wait to hear it! I’m really nervous though! Will it get ripped apart by blog posters and commenters everywhere? Will Slezak like it? Will he and JambaJim have a fanwar over it?

  • girlygirl

OMG, yay! So excited to hear Allison’s single. I’ve seen some tweets from people who claim to have heard it and said it’s awesome, so fingers crossed on that.

Just hoping they won’t try to Disney-fy her. Let her be her fierce rocker girl self

  • bmms

That is terrific news! My son loves Allison and I already pre-ordered her cd for him. O.K. I’ll be listening to it too. Allison keeps on rockin’ ;-)

  • tiger92

    Slezak will LOOOVVE it. Please?

I’m really excited for this. I hope they don’t screw this up and it’s some “hard-rock Miley” crap. Someone research this title…this isn’t a cover, is it?

  • auntieaimee

    Exciting! Fingers crossed.

  • sma11ie

Awesome! Hopefully this means it’ll have lots of time to grow before the album drop. But does the popeater thing mean Allie won’t get a fancy Z100 debut? Hope the pop stations still pick it up– go Allie!

  • sr4mjc

    How exciting!

  • Kirsten

Woo! Can’t wait to hear it. You go, Lava Girl!

Wow. JIVE really gets their artists singles out waaaaaaay before the album debuts.

Eh? It’s the normal release schedule for singles (6-8 weeks prior to the album). Look at the other artists debuting the same day. For instance, Carrie released her single on the same schedule (6-8 weeks before). John Mayer who is releasing an album the same day as Kris released his single on Sept 24th (just a few days after Kris).

  • leome

Very cool! I’m excited for this one.
The title sounds like something that could belong to Pink’s catalog! Should be interesting.

    And of course U!

by that logic Adam’s single would be released before Allison’s, and that isn’t the case here. Sometimes singles are dropped closer to a debut date. My comment wasn’t negative, I just stating a personal observation. Either way, it’ll be nice to hear some new music from the Season 8 Idols.

I guess it can’t be edgy if it’s not spelled “U”. I am so ready for that trend 2b over.

Friday I’ll be over you but sunday thru thursday I won’t . lol. I like the title.

Yeah. I like the title too.

  • Niall

I hope they don’t screw this up and it’s some ‘hard-rock Miley’ crap. Someone research this title’ ¦this isn’t a cover, is it?

She’s 17 so I am guessing “hard-rock Miley” or “teenage Pink.” There’s not as much difference between the two as there might seem to be. Still, it’s her first single and I’m looking forward to hearing what Jive has come up with for her.

Jive follows the traditional formula of releasing a single ahead of the album. RCA tends to drop singles much closer to album release, at least with the AI contestants.

  • Kirsten

by that logic Adam’s single would be released before Allison’s, and that isn’t the case here. Sometimes singles are dropped closer to a debut date.

LOL. I wrote a screed on this earlier today on the Headlines thread. Normal industry practice is to drop singles 6-8 weeks in advance of an album (sometimes even longer for new artists). RCA has traditionally treated Idols differently (Clive has explained the logic behind that in various articles).

  • windmills

    “She’s 17 so I am guessing ‘hard-rock Miley’ or ‘teenage Pink.’ ”

Me too. I’m expecting something Allison can have fun with and that there’ll be a song or two where Allison sets herself apart from the pack on the album. Maybe it’ll be a great cover of a legendary female rocker.

This is probably a Max Martin/Dr. Luke track yes? I know they didn’t originate the “U” thing but they’ve done it with a lot of their songs.

  • http://www.planetfierce.proboards.com rowenaaine

Since I am new to all this Idol stuff, why debut it on Popeater? Not on radio?

  • Susan M.

YAY Allison!!! That’s awesome news. And that photo in the Little Bird link is great.

  • CathyMK

    From Top Idol:

From what I hear, it is Pink-ish pop-punk.

Sounds like a fun song for Allison!

  • listen

Can’t wait to hear Allison’s single. She was my second favorite this season.

I hope they let her “rock on” and not make it all poppy. (Fingers crossed)

  • BeckyMD

I’m excited too. Allison’s voice is gold!!

  • Studio57

Is that the anti Cure song Friday I’m In Love?

  • Dr. Tracey

Oh good, a reason to look forward to Monday.

  • LaurelG

    Any rumors about the songwriter(s)?

  • tfmal

I can’t wait. I’m sure it will be great.

  • JohnM

Holy crap! I can’t believe it’s actually going to happen. I’m going to be a bundle of nerves all weekend….

Studio57: Is that the anti Cure song Friday I’m In Love?

Indeed — which makes it the Cure cure.

  • lola

Love the title of the song. Love some Allison. I’m sure I’m going to like her first single….all original.

Hmmmmm…..twitter may not be a devil afterall.

  • http://twitter.com/cara_lee pj

Can’t wait! I’m guessing it can still have a radio debut.

  • isisdagmar

The person who got this scoop on ontd_ai said that the song is fantastic and rocker/Pink, so I have a lot of hope that this means that it won’t sound Disneyfied–I mean, I’m sure they’re not letting her go full-on Janis or anything, but if she gets a really genuinely good pop/rock song, that would be awesome. And it sounds like that’s what has happened.

And I just hope that her voice really shines. Because hearing her live, she sounded richer than any recording she made during the season (and actually even richer than her live performances during the season), and it would be great if a recording could capture that.

It’s nice, really. Whatever you think of LLWD, it’s way better than any other AI winner’s song I’ve heard, and now it sounds like Allison’s single is going to be really good, and so hopefully Adam’s will be really good. Kradison may actually all manage to be really successful, or at least to all make really good music. I hope so. :)

  • JohnM

Since the stupid official websites never announce stuff like this, I was over at Allison’s site about half an hour ago posting an announcement about this, and the site was wildly slow. Just after I posted, it started giving a “site under maintenance” page (with the amusing title “Allison Iraheta is Under Maintenance”). I figured they were doing some kind of upgrade in conjunction with announcing the single, but no — the site came back up and was exactly the same — no announcement! Maybe they were adding extra server capacity, figuring they’re going to get a lot more traffic starting Monday….

  • tiger92

She’s 17 so I am guessing ‘hard-rock Miley’ or ‘teenage Pink.’ There’s not as much difference between the two as there might seem to be.

There’s a difference. I’m hoping for “teenage Pink”. I think this is where she will fit best. I’m excited!

  • windmills

    “all original.”

Original as in never before released sure but chances are, it’s a Pink/Kelly/Lesley Roy reject. I’m keeping my expectations for the song down as far as artistry but I’ve still got big hopes for the album.

  • alison8701

What is the purpose of making it “U” instead of “You”? I wanna say that even Miley’s songs don’t use chatspeak.

I wonder if it’ll sound exactly like P!nk. because one pink isn’t quite enough.

  • http://twitter.com/cara_lee pj

What is the purpose of making it ‘U’ instead of ‘You’ ? I wanna say that even Miley’s songs don’t use chatspeak.

    Blame Prince.

  • JohnM

    pj: Blame Prince.

Blame the success of Kelly’s Since U Been Gone.

  • Old Rocker Dude

or blame Max Martin for the original he wrote for Allison. I doubt it’s a

    Pink/Kelly/Lesley Roy reject

    as windmills suggests.

  • http://twitter.com/cara_lee pj

Blame the success of Kelly’s Since U Been Gone.

“I Would Die 4 U” and “Nothing Compares 2 U” preceed Kelly. And yes, those were written in the 80s, long before texting and chatting. I can’t think of anyone who did it before him, although someone might’ve.

  • sma11ie

    pj: Blame Prince.

Blame the success of Kelly’s Since U Been Gone.

I don’t mind the U. The worst title I’ve seen lately is a track from Kelly’s new album. It’s called “whyyawannabringmedown”. I mean, srsly, Kelly? Srsly. The song isn’t that great either.

    ETA: ugottabkiddinme

Haha, nice, ppwars. Maybe the first single should’ve been mylyfewudsukwidoutju… or something. I’m weird though. I text and twitter in whole words.

  • Michelle

GO ALLISON! I can’t wait to hear her song!

  • ppwars

ugottabkiddinme – It’s all good! Lookin’ forward to the release.

  • Nico

    To alison8701
Pink’s 30 years old, Kelly Clarkson 27 – Allison (17) will fit in nicely, younger audience will relate to her. For now that’s the most successful way for her to go – to be this strong kick ass chick who doesn’t care what people think, who won’t sing about butterflies and rainbows and so on – and the best part is that she doesn’t need to be like that, because she IS all that. She likes alternative music, she many times suggested that she won’t be doing and doesn’t like the bubblegum disney music. She said she wanted to have a rock album but it’s her first so it’ll be pop-rock Pinkish… hope that in the future will get a rock album.

    Anyway, can’t wait till Monday :D :D

  • JohnM

pj: ‘I Would Die 4 U’ and ‘Nothing Compares 2 U’ preceed Kelly.

Yes, I know Prince is (or is at least close to) the original source, but the much more recent success of another AI alum with a song written/produced by Max Martin who’s also working with Allison seems like a more relevant reason.

  • beckysspam

I don’t mind the U. The worst title I’ve seen lately is a track from Kelly’s new album. It’s called ‘whyyawannabringmedown’ . I mean, srsly, Kelly? Srly. The song isn’t that great either.

LOL. That’s one of my favorite songs on her album.

I don’t love the U in the title, but I guess don’t mind it too much either.

  • Destry

Suweeeet! I miss our little fuschia haired darling and her smoky eyed voice!

The title suits her very well. It’s got that feisty, precocious edge to it and at the same time, particularly with the “U”, gives off that teenage vibe of someone thinking they understand life but hasn’t really had enough mature experience yet to.

I hope she names her album “Pebbles.” An angsty, feisty, little Pebbles.

  • saga

So whats the scope of the song? Have any of the internet detectives found who wrote it, has it been done before and all that?

  • Michelle

Allison just twittered a phone number to hear a preview:

Allison4Realzzz Aight homies you guys wanna hear a sneak preview of my NEW SINGLE?! Call me to hear it at 323-982-8897. Ohhh shnaaaapssss

eta: ok, I called and got about a 20 second snippet…very Pinkish, kind of teen rawk, with a dash of 80s throwback sound :) Not enough to form a full opinion (plus the sound quality over the phone is sort of crappy) but seems promising!

  • Valentin432

Great news, the time frame seems to be right for this.
So I guess that rumor about the single being a cover of a Rudolph track was wrong, maybee it’s in the album tough.

  • jpfan

Mmm, the U’s a bit of a turn off but I guess it’ll have a Kelly C Jr. vibe.

    Anyone know who wrote it?

  • ppwars

My f’fox 3.53 browser just quit displaying the pages right. IE works just fine.

  • windmills

the original he wrote for Allison. I doubt it’s a

    Pink/Kelly/Lesley Roy reject

    as windmills suggests.

I hope you’re right :) I’m just not counting on it and if I’m pleasantly surprised then yay!

Has anyone found the song at ASCAP? I can’t seem to get in there. If it’s not registered yet then that improves the chances of it being an original.

Whyyawannabringmedown is one of my faves from Kelly’s album too.

  • Cheetara86

Its definitely a max martin track..i can tell from the title

  • snuffles

I just called! I like it! It IS very punk-ish. Reminds me of Joan Jett.

  • saga

My f’fox 3.53 browser just quit displaying the pages right. IE works just fine.

Sorry for the OT post, but I am having LOTS of isues with the latest upgrade of FF. It freezes all the time.

BTW, did a utube search for Alisons song, didn’t find anything.

  • jpfan

i’m listening now. Loud. Oh boy, not my favorite song. Lot’s of screaming.
So far it sounds like a crap song I’d hear on Top 40 (before I switched channels). You’re right about the Joan jett vibe. But so overproduced, Yikes.

You only get a little snip though.

  • FifthHouseSun

Maybe someone at Jive figured out Friday not the perfect day to debut a song about getting over something on Friday.

  • http://twitter.com/cara_lee pj

Yes, I know Prince is (or is at least close to) the original source, but the much more recent success of another AI alum with a song written/produced by Max Martin who’s also working with Allison seems like a more relevant reason

Someone asked what the point was. I was merely pointing out that’s nothing new and can be traced as far back as Prince. *shrugs* No biggie.

  • girlygirl

I called the 323 number to hear the snippet. Hard to give an opinion with the poor sound quality — couldn’t really even hear the vocals. But I did get a Pink-ish vibe. So I’m hopeful…

  • alaadam

I liked it! I can’t wait for it to get on itunes.

  • FifthHouseSun

Who was that singing the song? Some female with a really high, massively over-dubbed, completely non-distinctive, non rocker voice?

  • luvadamlambert

    I like top 40;)

OMA THIS IS THE BEST NEWS EVAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH SHES LIKE MY SECOND FAVE IDOL RHIS IS AWESOME SHIZZZXD haha Allison I LIVE HERRRRRRR SOOOOOOOOOO EXCITED WHAAAT TIME? sooo you get a pre-recorded message thing of t song if you call that number?OMA FLAILLLLLLLLLLING!!!!!!!!!

  • jpfan

Call the number and you can hear the snip. Be prepared to get stupid text messages as the price though.

I’d like to hear more opinions about the sample. I can’t stand songs where people scream but maybe Allison’s fans will love it. I think we’re on the same page 5HS. :)

  • Cheetara86

Can’t find my cell phone, so I guess I’ll wait till monday for a much better quality version

I can’t tell anything from that clip other than it is definitely pop/punk. And very energetic. But the sound quality on my phone was too crappy to tell anything else. I can’t wait ’till Monday!

  • luvadamlambert

oh and I flive the title:D

  • Cheetara86

From what I read, lots of people really like it

  • Matt

Just called the number and heard the snip. Just a heads up for anybody who gives it a call, the sound quality is next to terrible, but it’s better than nothing.

My verdict of the snip: I think it’s perfect for her. The guitar riff is a sample of a certain 80′s hit (at least I think it was from the 80′s) that, for the life of me, I cannot name the title of. I will be STUNNED if this song isn’t a fixture on CHR. The snippet has smash-hit potential, though I’d still like to hear the full song.

  • Niall

It sort of sounds like something from Kelly Clarkson’s current cd. I’d also say there’s some Avril Lavigne in there as well.

Definitely doesn’t seem overly teen popish, which is a nice suprise.

  • sma11ie

    But so overproduced, Yikes.

Agreed. Yikes. The beat and guitars are cool, but the vocal sounded nothing like Allison’s voice! And she has a really distinctive voice! At least Pink and Kelly’s overproduced pop hits still sound like them… this is like processed/unrecognizable Britney vocals… Hopefully the rest of it is better. Or maybe it’s the crappy phone quality.

  • Susan M.

I’m not getting it on the Web site. Anyone know where to go?

  • PRMari

Damn it! Can’t find my phone number so I can’t listen to more than a few seconds, I guess I’ll wait but I’m so excited!

  • JohnM

I just heard the clip on the phone too. Hard to tell with 1950s AM-radio quality over a phone, so I’m certainly reserving judgment until I hear the whole thing with good quality sound, but it sounds about like what would be expected for a first single — a standard, upbeat, catchy Kelly song. Sounds like there’s probably too much processing on her voice, but I haven’t been holding out too much hope on that one.

Doesn’t sound punk-ish or Joan Jett-ish to me at all. And no, no screaming at all, just high notes.

  • suebrody

luv is happy so I’m happy for luv.

Sounded kind of screamy, but liked the vibe. Hey, it’s not Miley Cyrus. She doesn’t sound like she’s 12, I’ll give her that. And I don’t care about the “u”–it it’s good enough for Prince, it’s good enough for Allison. ;)

  • Mary102

Kinda like the song – hard to tell from the snippet – but sounds very Pink/Kelly-ish, which is definitely the direction she should be going in. Doesn’t sound as much like her voice, which may be the biggest drawback (her voice, after all, is so unique and cool). Otherwise, way to go, Alli!

  • jpfan

Talking out my butt over a little clip but while this song maybe a hit there’s nothing that would interest me in Allison in it. The vocals are pretty generic. But I usually hate all Idol first singles. It’s rare when I actually like one. :)

  • Cheetara86

The majority love it..and this is smart strategy..keep the people interested and you get more hits on the website…

I listened to it..poor sound quality, but I love it…very catchy and from that small snippet..it got stuck in my head..Very good for a potential hit

  • suebrody

    Will Slezak like it?

Slezak would like it if Allison just sang the phone book. Wait, that’s Randy’s line…for me for you for me

  • Mary102

I’m not getting it on the Web site. Anyone know where to go?

I couldn’t find it on the website either – I called the number instead (though will probably get text spam on my cell phone now :-( )

  • Matt

The beat’s cool, but the vocal sounded nothing like Allison’s voice!

I noticed this. I’d like to think it’s Allison singing in a higher key that we haven’t heard her sing before rather than a synthesized voice. But then again, the sound quality was poor. I’ll need a HQ version.

  • Michelle

At any rate, at least the direction they are going in seems right.

Avril seems like a good comparison…a younger Pink…

I don’t follow Disney that much, but is this kind of what Demi Lovato sounds like?

  • saga

It’s so rare when I actually like one.

So it there one you have liked?

  • Cheetara86
  • FifthHouseSun

jpfan & sma11ie are right on.

Here’s how it works if you want to hear 20 seconds of very loud, very high, so over-produced it could be Britney something that isn’t the second coming of real rock.

    You call the number. 323-982-8897
You hold the phone very far from your ear, and hear Allison telling you what to press.
You donate cell phone number to Jive’s database. You do not need to be on a cell phone.
    They check the number.
Then — and they don’t make this clear — you want to press 1 to “join the mob”. Otherwise you go on a loop and hear Allison instructions again.

Then you hear snippet of triple layered voice you won’t recognize singing to fuzzy beats.

(“Join the mob” is about large crowd impromptu street theatre isn’t it?)

  • Valentin432

They have the cover on the website, I really like it, you can see that it’s from the same photoshoot as the others that have leaked a while ago.

  • jpfan

    Cute picture.

  • luvadamlambert

oh um Demi no.as bd as ugh I can’t even say it mileyyy.well Demi sounds like Selena(gomez)sad I know this

I dialed the number and it didn’t go through?

    I’ll try the website

    it’s not Miley Cyrus

and the world is a much better place…

  • Duke

I’d call, but the 9 key on my phone is broke :-(

  • http://www.gravatar.com/avatar/818e524d5f2e07b8e1e4584941c5979e.png tinawina

Well I like her cover art!

I don’t think it sounds like Pink at all, it has a different vibe to me, a bit… harder? More throwback? But the in your face attitude seems the same.

Avril could be closer but I have to hear the whole thing first. It doesn’t sound – i don’t know – scrubbed clean enough to be Demi Lovato. LOL.

  • Cheetara86

Its hard to hear cause the sound is cell phone quality..like a cellcast..but I really like it…its catchy and its stuck in my head

  • http://www.twitter.com/halfie6 halfie

Allison’s still 17, right? Then I shall refrain from joking about the double-entendre in the title.

  • Matt

…that isn’t the second coming of real rock.

If anybody is anticipating the second coming of real rock from anybody to come out of Idol, they’re going to be terribly disappointed.

RE: The Single Cover…I like it. Loud and vibrant colors.

  • luvadamlambert

wow .I actually flove the album artwork thing.and not me flailing over random things,I actually like it…

  • ilovetohateai

i think the song is as crappy as the reception!

  • KenzTK

Sounds pretty good, though it’s hard to really tell. It sounds like a Katy Perry track with more of a rocker edge.

I could hear that. Maybe like the Ramones or somebody like that. DISCLAIMER: I AM NOT CALLING HER SONG AS GOOD AS THE RAMONES. JUST SAYING IT SOUNDS LIKE LATE 70s PUNK, POPiFIED FOR A TEEN GIRL.

Heh. So yeah, I’m not gonna judge the voice or production until I hear the whole song, higher quality version.

  • duklyon

I can’t hear the snipet but judging a song (for good or for bad) based on 10 seconds heard on the phone with an awfull quality seems premature to me.

Disagree. The sign of a good radio song is that it catches your ear very quickly so you stop changing the station and listen.

It sounded kinda punk to me. The vocal didn’t sound much like her but maybe it’s the sound quality. It’s catchy.

  • alaadam

I sent it to my daughter-in-law. she luved it but thought the sound quality was bad on the phone. She is excited to hear it Monday. She wanted to know who Joan Jett is….lol

  • Cheetara86

I like this strategy with allison..its clever…its directed towards teens…you can send this to your friends..it can go viral with the whole twitter thing too….

  • Kirsten

I like the single cover. But, sadness over the industry need for so much photoshopping.

  • BeckyMD

Don’t know what to think about the snippet. If I didn’t know better, I would know it’s Allison’s voice.

ETA, like the single cover tho.
ETAA, Avril vibe, catchy song, imo right direction for Allison. Can’t wait for the full version of it.

  • JohnM

To those who say it doesn’t have any of Allison’s distinctive voice in it:

That was my reaction too, though I kept in mind that it’s nearly impossible to make a judgment about that with such crappy sound quality.

But then my wife called to hear it as well, and hearing it for a second time, on a different phone, from across the room, I could tell that a little bit of the rich depth of her voice was there. Again, tough to tell without high quality, but at least there’s hope that they didn’t suck everything out of her voice. :-)

And again, definitely no screaming there.

  • Destry

I like the edginess to it, glad it’s not trying to be cute.
But who is singing? Is that her higher register? It scares me.

I do have to admit that I LOVE when she “screams”, I was kind of expecting her sound to be a lower, more gravelly version of Paramore. I can’t really tell what they’re going for yet.

  • FifthHouseSun

If anybody is anticipating the second coming of real rock from anybody to come out of Idol, they’re going to be terribly disappointed.

No, Matt, wasn’t expecting anything. Hoping for something that sounded distinctly like Allison. This snippet doesn’t, IMHO. Never heard her sing this high. Or this echo chambered in a way that usually is used to mask mediocre voices. Maybe the full song has parts that do sound like no one but Slezak’s “Rocker”. (Slezak even supers “Rocker Saved Productions” on his new video series.) And, he would call anything Allison does perfect. This included.

“Real rock” is the reaction Allison generated during the season and on tour. What people felt from her. And she certainly delivered the goods live. Instantly recognizable unique voice. Really low voice. And maybe some tracks on the album will have that. And this is to lure in kids to the album.

  • http://mjsbigblog.com/voronas-ontario-american-idol-tour-recap.htm vorona

I like what I could hear of it, although I couldn’t tell if her voice was heavily processed (she’s too good for that!) or if that was just my tinny phone. I’ll be happy to hear it online soon.

  • https://twitter.com/draddee Sunn

Just called and listened. Can’t tell much from the clip, but it sounds like it may have an Avril Lavigne hint about it. And if the rest of the song is what I expect it to be, a slight hint of Paramore as well. So I agree with whoever said it has a punk/rock flavour.

Not my taste in music, but it’s popular at the moment.

  • TXArchitect

Allison can look rathewr harsh/old in photographs, and I’m so, so, so glad that she….

looks YOUNG, HOT, EDGY, SWEET and kinda INNOCENT

    in this artwork!

I think the shot is the perfect choice to keep the kids comfortable with her, but let her make that transition into adulthood too.

Plus, her hair looks HEALTHY! It’s all good.

  • alison8701

Can’t tell much from the clip, but it sounds like it may have an Avril Lavigne hint about it.

I heard some avril in there too. More so than P!nk.

  • Cheetara86

We will have to wait for the aol.com Popeater quality..that is when you can get a sense of it..but from what I can tell..this can be a big radio hit…

  • alxsavage

I’m extremely tempted to make an international call right now…only for 10 seconds.

  • MollyAnnMay

zomg! I can’t listen right now and have no time to comment other than say zomg, so… zomg! Also, I *love* that cover.

Man, I am too old to be this excited.

She wanted to know who Joan Jett is’ ¦.lol

Make that waaaaaaaay too old. Bwah! (Especially since Joan Jett could be considered a 2nd or 3rd generation rocker herself.)

  • http://www.twitter.com/halfie6 halfie

Really amazed this isn’t on youUtube yet.

  • leome

    Just listened to it.
The sound quality is really not good… but I think I’ll add my vote to the Avril team. There was that girl who opened for Achie who’s music was also Avrilish, and that’s what this is sounding like to me. I can also see the Miley Cyrus/Demi thing.
But what a short bad quality clip, I almost wish I hadn’t listened to that, it didn’t even sound like Allison.

  • JohnM

tinawina: I AM NOT CALLING HER SONG AS GOOD AS THE RAMONES.

Good! Because if it’s only as good as the Ramones, it sure won’t be noteworthy! ;-)

Destry: I was kind of expecting her sound to be a lower, more gravelly version of Paramore.

God, I wish. More lower register!!!!

  • ravengirl

Wow, those of you who can’t find your cell phones — how do you LIVE without them?

Just listened. Hated the intro guitar riff. Sounds like something one of my kids could do. But I have to say that I did like the song itself. Catchy, pop-y, Pink meets Demi Lovato.

  • http://twitter.com/cara_lee pj

Sound quality is too poor over my phone to give an honest assessment, but I think it sounds promising. Can’t wait to hear the whole song. Definitely had a pop/punk vibe.

  • Cheetara86

EWMichaelslezak SoRRRy, sonzzz. Can’t Tweet right now because I just PEEEEED myself with excitement at the sound of @Allison4Realzzz’s #FridayIllBeOverU3 minutes ago from web

  • Rub

Sounds very pinkish, current fast with plenty of opportunities for her chops. We’ll have to wait n see if she follows through. Radio will eat this. About the punk thing- it makes sense. I thought her rendition of Barracuda was punkish.

  • Destry

Hot cover. I like how they highlighted her hair to play with the red in the background.

I hope there’s more Paramour than Avril in her music. (Maybe it’s cuz I’ve always secretly wanted to hear her sing Misery Business)

The cover is nice. They also did a great job picking a typeface for her nanme. Throwback to old school rock fonts, but also a little curvier for modernity. I’m less fond of the “x” dotting the “i” but I’m probably not the demo to which that is supposed to appeal.

  • luvadamlambert

    what time does it debut?

  • hwc

Slesak peed himself over an Idol wannabee’s song? Good lord. Get a grip, bro.

  • Cheetara86

They are doing exactly what I thought Jive would do..they are doing “artist development”..Look at the career of Rihanna and you’ll get a sense at what artist development is.

Jive will treat Allison as a “brand new artist”..try not to be connected to idol…they will create buzz around her (like with this leak today) basically build her from the ground up. It is the best strategy for a long, successful career. I really don’t understand why labels don’t do this more often

  • luvadamlambert

The beat’s cool, but the vocal sounded nothing like Allison’s voice!
I noticed this. I’d like to think it’s Allison singing in a higher key that we haven’t heard her sing before rather than a synthesized voice. But then again, the sound quality was poor. I’ll need a HQ version.

Exactly. Alli is at the hi end of her register that whole clip. The crits seem much like those of Kris’ 20″ clip – WAY bably prejudged (by me included).
I like Alli’s clip. No shouting, as JohnM says. Simply not HQ, over the phone, and in her high register. I’m lots more fired up about Alli’s than Kris’CLIP.

  • FifthHouseSun

Very cute Slezak tweet. But why didn’t he tweet the phone number? Could have easily cliipped his tweet to fit. Not the kind of detail he’d miss, usually. Maybe he’s going to follow up a few times over the weekend. Or there’s some if people are going to donate the numbers to a database, let’s make it the EW on conflict.

  • Truthiness

Definitely 80s pop-punkish thang happening, but I happen to like that kind of sound and liked the snippet I heard. The only downside is that Allison’s distinctive voice wasn’t readily apparent to me, but it is a snippet and it crappy sound quality, so I’ll reserve judgement.

But thus far? I liked it.

  • jms

huh. love the art work! the clip sounds like a fun tune. But the vocals didn’t sound like Allison to me. It didn’t have that gritty sound I’ve come to expect from her. Hopefully, I’ll hear that distinctive sound on Monday when Popeater gives us better quality version. Anyway, it’s got me feeling more optimistic about her album.

Nope, this is SLEZAK you’re talking about.

  • Mary102

I can’t hear the snipet but judging a song (for good or for bad) based on 10 seconds heard on the phone with an awfull quality seems premature to me.

But what else can we do to pass the time ;-) ?

It’s a friday, typically a slow news day, and we actually got a song leak from Allison – completely out of the blue! And a single on monday! Pretty awesome for what I wrote off as another no-news day.

  • https://twitter.com/draddee Sunn

I can’t edit because I’m posting from my phone, I just wanted to add that I love the artwork!

  • JohnM

FifthHouseSun: Never heard her sing this high.

Yes, you have. The highest note in that clip is D5, which she also hit or exceeded in the majority of her AI performances:
    Give In To Me
    Papa Was A Rolling Stone
I Can’t Make You Love Me
    I Don’t Want To Miss A Thing
    Hot Stuff
    Cry Baby
    Slow Ride

Yes, I checked the clip on our piano. Yes, I checked IdolRanges. Yes, I’m way too over-invested in this. ;-)

  • CathyMK

Love the single cover, the song sounds promising and catchy. It’ll fit right in on the radio with My Life Would Suck, I Do Not Hook Up, So What, Love Drunk…

  • http://www.thriftysisters.ecrater.com tammyinohio

I LOVE that single cover!!! I know it’s only 10 sec but I wish someone would leak it to youtube. I don’t have long distance on my home phone and I don’t have a cell phone. *sigh* Don’t know if I can wait until Monday.

  • http://www.gravatar.com/avatar/818e524d5f2e07b8e1e4584941c5979e.png tinawina

a slight hint of Paramour as well.

Paramore’s style would fit her well, but because they both have red hair, I bet she’d get a whole lot of “cheap Hayley knockoff” comments if she went in that direction. LOL.

  • Mary102

    what time does it debut?

Yeah, I’m also wondering about any other PR appearances by Allison next week to promote the single. Any word yet? Interviews, etc?

According to my source, it was supposed to happen today, but has been pushed back to Monday.

Smart move, imo. What the hell is it with Jive and this fascination with premiering things on the dead zone day that is Friday. Really, Jive, wtf??

And I also really really like the single cover – she looks great there! Very young, but with an edge – just like her!

  • snood199

    What is this? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XFdcquqkL9g
It’s claimed as new Allison, but I hadn’t seen anything here.

  • saga

I would say Avril too. Very, very hard to hear but it sounded very autotuned on the higher notes but hopefully thats an effect of the bad sound quality. The song itself sounds like a hit, maybe more so than Kris’ single since it has some electronic elements.

  • Cheetara86

Smart move, imo. What the hell is it with Jive and this fascination with premiering things on the dead zone day that is Friday. Really, Jive, wtf??

definitely smart…give a snippet friday…leave the people wanting more, get that buzz

I think they are building allison from the ground up…which is smart

  • BeckyMD

I like the approach they chose to leak the snippet. It’s free but asks for a little effort which gives that engage feeling. The release day is good too.

I won’t be surprised if ‘Friday I’ll Be Over U’ is picked up faster in radio and itune than llwd does so far. llwd drops out of itune 50 now.

  • http://www.twitter.com/halfie6 halfie

Please tell me I’m hearing the lyric in the hook wrong:

“You get me… to forget me..”

Because if that’s right it’s going to remind me of another Idol’s song:

    “When you’ve found you…”

  • Valentin432

After hearing it, thanks for the meagaupload link, I can definetly recognize her voice but it’s in a higher register that I’m used to listenning from her.
I still think the quality is too poor and the snipet too short to judge the song.

  • JohnM

halfie: The cover is nice. They also did a great job picking a typeface for her nanme. Throwback to old school rock fonts, but also a little curvier for modernity. I’m less fond of the ‘x’ dotting the ‘i’ but I’m probably not the demo to which that is supposed to appeal.

I had the same reaction that the font is a good choice. However, I like the ‘x’ over the ‘i’ — punky, and a (probably unintentional) reference to the fact that the song is about an “ex”.

  • leome

Smart move, imo. What the hell is it with Jive and this fascination with premiering things on the dead zone day that is Friday. Really, Jive, wtf??

Yeah, cause that work really bad for Tattoo and Crush. Those two poor songs.

  • KLI

I listened to the sample. It was hard to hear what was going on and it didn’t sound like Allison to me, but what the hey . . . it definitely caught my ear and made me want to hear the rest of it.

Reminded me a bit of Kelly Clarkson, which is funny, because Allison doesn’t sound a bit like Kelly Clarkson.

Actually, it’s old Allison and has been on Youtube since last spring. She recorded it about a year before Idol as part of her participation in Camp Pop Hollywood.

  • saga

No idea, but that’s definitely her’ ¦ right?

I thought part of the singing was her, but in the end the solo singing def doesn’t sound like her. It’s like they mixed two singers on this song.

Cool sounding title. I listened to the little preview over the phone but there’s not much to form an honest opinion about.

Here’s what I’m hearing for lyrics, although I’m sure I have a few wrong:

    About you
    Who are you
    When I’m gone?

    Wanted to
    be with you
    Don’t know why
    I was wrong

    Cause you get me
    to forget me
Ohhh, oooh, oooh, you know that you
Yeah you get me, to forget me

By Friday I’ll be over U
    Oh yeah!

  • Cheetara86

jambajim I sincerely hope when Allison sings “Friday I’ll Be Over U” she’s not referring to being over someone physically. She’s too young for that.

    haha

  • leome

Did they release those on Friday ‘“ I didn’t know. But didn’t work well imo for Kris. Friday itunes release made no sense to me.

Kris released his song on a monday. Then it went on itunes on a friday. But when they say Allison’s song will be released next monday it doesn’t mean on itunes.

  • mahrikka

Although the quality is poor, it certainly makes me want to tune in on Monday to hear the whole thing. Great marketing idea to have Alli personally introducing the snippet on the phone. I’m excited for her!

  • Mary102

I would say Avril too. Very, very hard to hear but it sounded very autotuned on the higher notes but hopefully thats an effect of the bad sound quality. The song itself sounds like a hit, maybe more so than Kris’ single since it has some electronic elements.

Unfortunately, I am not holding my breath for this to NOT be somewhat over-autotuned. It always kinda astounds me when excellent singers are still over-autotuned.

Also working against Allison, imo, is that her voice has a huskier, older sound, and this single leak sounds like they are going for a much younger, poppier sound – which would lead to more autotuning, I’m afraid.

  • ppwars

OK…I carefully listened with 2 speaker sets, two ear phone sets. You WILL be pleasantly surprised with the production song! AT LEAST! It’s definitely her, uniquely. DEFINITELY high chart potential.

  • Destry

Paramore’s style would fit her well, but because they both have red hair, I bet she’d get a whole lot of ‘cheap Hayley knockoff’ comments if she went in that direction. LOL.

    Dang it! Oh well.

Unless they get together and form their own redhead rocker band

  • Mary102

Kris released his song on a monday. Then it went on itunes on a friday. But when they say Allison’s song will be released next monday it doesn’t mean on itunes.

Not to beat this point to death, but imo, the two most important dates (from a marketing – getting the song out there standpoint – and yes, I know other dates are important too) would be the release date and the itunes add date. Neither of those dates should be on a Friday (or weekend) imo. So having the release date on Monday for Kris was great, but the itunes release date on Friday was very bad.

For Allison, I think this was a much smarter strategy to have the leak on Friday, official release on Monday, and hopefully the itunes date on a Tuesday (as is typical). JMO, of course.

  • auntieaimee

Not impressed by the clip. :( I’m so bummed!

  • saga

Unfortunately, I am not holding my breath for this to NOT be somewhat over-autotuned. It always kinda astounds me when excellent singers are still over-autotuned.

I don’t see the need to use autotuning even on poppier songs unless you are after a distinct sound or want to cover that you can’t sing (Kanye) the part very well. I like the personal style of human voices and as long as they don’t go totally out of pitch a more colored sound is what makes me get goose bumps when listening. I NEVER get goose bumps listening to autotuned voices.

    DEFINITELY high chart potential.

    Totally agree.

  • Rub

It has some punk, I’ll take its right up my alley. This may have a little.
Shouting gives a song texture, personality, punch when placed at the right time, and along with melodical vocals you get inyourface-heartfelt rock. You get AFI!

I personally want Alli to collaborate with Davey and Jane for a punk record in the future. Not too hard, just a sort of follow up to “Sing The Sorrow.”
Btw, Alli has hit higher notes before as JohnM pointed out. Thats another arsenal at her disposal, but its the lower register that we all fell for.

Friday I’ll Be Over U – Allison Iraheta (Rocker Saved)

  • chessguy99

Listened to it a few times. Definitely sounds like she did this with Max Martin. It reminds me of The Veronicas 4Ever. They started out as pop rockers before settling into the rock laced dance stuff they do now.

Song has tremendous radio play potential; good beat, catchy and theme should play well to teen/20-somethings. In all, a perfect song to generate interest in the upcoming album.

  • JohnM

Rub: but its the lower register that we all fell for.

Ohh, you got that right, baby.

I’ve been really really hoping that she’ll have some lower register stuff on the album — probably not singles, but that doesn’t matter to me, as long as it’s there.

  • Cheetara86

if it does sound autotuned to some..maybe its because the way its been digitized..recorded off a cell phone then posted on youtube and stuff

Wow, she is singing this song with power and conviction. She’s gonna make some believers.

  • https://twitter.com/draddee Sunn

Back at my comp so I can listen properly.

I stick with my earlier verdict of Avril/Paramore vibe in that clip. I find Paramore annoying, but they are the biggest thing with the teen set at the moment. If it follows that formula, it might well be a chart hit.

  • Tess

Pose on the cover: Totally Allison w/ that special expression of hers.
Photoshopped: Not much…I blew it up 400% and it’s her w/ that silly nose
    Graphics: Awesome
Song: Catchy and radio friendly and it stays in your head…Instantly recognizable
Audience: Top 40 Pop (come on guys she’s too young for hard rock…she has to grow into that, voice not withstanding)
Opinion: I think this song will catch on and catch on quickly…especially when she sings it live w/ her flailing left hand. Besides, she’ll have the audience at “HI”

ETA: Also, I feel like I’m watching American Bandstand. “Dick, I’ll give it a 9.8…good beat, catchy, fun to dance to!”

  • Rub

JohnM, you got to be right. If it has 11 or 12 tracks we’re gonna see some good stuff. Singles are for the pop folks. You build them and they will come, but its the B-sides and other non single tracks that gives the artist character. You know some of the best tracks were recorded by accident as fillers.

Jive stocks their albums with radio hits and the non singles are usually terrible. Jive’s pattern is release one Top 40 hit after another. And I think they’re as happy with multi platinum downloads as with albums sold. This sounds way more like a traditional Jive artist than Kris though.

  • NSN

Allison’s song reminds me of “All Day and All of The Night by The Kinks

Totally agree. I heard Kelly/Max right off the bat — right down to the “oh-oh oh-oh” stuff that’s very similar to I Do Not Hook Up. I think the Avril comparison has merit, though (not that I’m an Avril expert).

Sunn: I stick with my earlier verdict of Avril/Paramore vibe in that clip.

Similarity to Paramore would be great — they’re excellent rockers.

Tess: Photoshopped: Not much’ ¦I blew it up 400% and it’s her w/ that silly nose

ummm…. uhhhh…. Huh? What? Silly nose? Did I miss something? Surely the comment about photoshopping was referring to the obvious effects applied to the periphery, not her face.

Catchy and radio friendly and it stays in your head’ ¦Instantly recognizable

Yes indeed. I haven’t been able to get it out of my head since I first heard it, a couple of hours ago now, I guess. Can be maddening when you don’t like a song that’s stuck in there, but I’m fine with this one!

Rub: its the B-sides and other non single tracks that gives the artist character. You know some of the best tracks were recorded by accident as fillers.

Oh yeah, definitely. My wife likes to point out that singles are often the weakest songs on an album. Was certainly true with David Cook, just to name a relevant example — weak singles, while some of the best stuff was “bonus” — Kiss On The Neck and especially Breathe Tonight.

  • CSFan

Definitely a mix of Avril Lavigne and some of the early 80′s power punk/pop girl bands. Jive appears to have hit the bullseye as far as what Allison should be doing at this point in her career.

  • Adamme

Yay.. Allison! She’s my 2nd fav and I like what I hear, definitely will get it from iTunes as soon as they made it available.

    Happy for Allison.

  • PRMari

I think it’s got radio potential like crazy. Even if this doesn’t fully capture Allison’s voice, I’m fine with it. She needs to have a good radio hit for people to pay attention. Those of us that know her and know of her capabilities will be rewarded with other songs, but this is pretty awesome as a first single.

The thing is totally stuck in my head, which I guess is a good sign. I can’t wait to buy this.

  • FifthHouseSun

JohnM very impressive range report. And not sure you can be over-invested in sound quality. So, I ammend: Not used to hearing her use this well-documented, comfortably hit higher end of her range for a whole song. Think of her lower register more often.

And maybe this whole song won’t be all high. And maybe the other end of her range will be roamed through many other of the baker’s dozen on the album.

  • mrskiddens

My apologies if this has been mentioned, I don’t have time to read through, but peeps without text plans BEWARE!!!!! I called and immediately received a text message that will cost me. I love you Allison but shame on you (or your powers that be) for this. :(

MJ just a suggestion, perhaps you can add a warning to your post that those who call will get texted, standard fees apply, that kind of thing? Thanks :)

  • BestAI

Why can’t they leak a snippet of the real recording, like Kris’s. I can’t stand listening something that sounds so horrible.

  • evanjane

I like it. Definitely radio-worthy, fitting into the female pop/rockers mold. Hope the Album surprises us with a few Melissa Ethridge/Janis Joplin-esque songs — raw and gritty.

John M. — I, too, love Breathe Tonight. Speakers blaring, singing at the top of your lungs kinda song. I always looked at those bonus songs as the real DC — a preview of what’s to come on the 2nd album for sure.

I think Idol hit the motherlode of talent this year with Kradison.

  • CindyM

I listened to the clip, what I could hear, love it!! The artwork is awesome for the cover, will definitely catch eyes when it’s an Itunes banner!! Jive seems really invested in Allison and I couldn’t be happier! Now, no Friday release to Itunes, release it on Tuesday!

  • PRMari

Why can’t they leak a snippet of the real recording, like Kris’s. I can’t stand listening something that sounds so horrible.

It’s not a leak, is a sneak preview and you can hear the entire thing on Monday, so just wait a few days and you’ll get something better.

  • Cheetara86

That cover definitely pops..and will catch your eye

  • PattyH

Why am I only hearing a guitar riff and then Allison talking, when I call that number? How are you all hearing a vocal?!

  • sma11ie

I’m hoping the comparisons to Avril hold true. Love Avril. She too has a great, distinctive voice that suffered from a bit of overproduction on her albums (I love Avril’s voice acoustic and live), but at the end of the day, the overproduction didn’t detract too much from the songs, and she sold multiplatinum. I love the cover. It’s perfect.

My wife likes to point out that singles are often the weakest songs on an album. Was certainly true with David Cook, just to name a relevant example ‘” weak singles, while some of the best stuff was ‘bonus’ ‘” Kiss On The Neck and especially Breathe Tonight.

I LURRRVE Breathe Tonight. I will never for the life of me understand why that didn’t make the regular record. I dunno, to me, it was the only song on DC’s record that sounds like a radio hit, as recorded.

  • suebrody

I think you have to press 1 to get the song…

That album art is really purty…I reserve judgment on the song till I’ve heard it all.

  • JohnM

jpfan: Jive stocks their albums with radio hits and the non singles are usually terrible. Jive’s pattern is release one Top 40 hit after another. And I think they’re as happy with multi platinum downloads as with albums sold.

Agreed, which is why I’ve been very nervous about the fact that it was Jive who signed her. We’ll see.

This sounds way more like a traditional Jive artist than Kris though.

More like a traditional Jive artist? When I think of Jive, I think of crappy, hyper-mechanized so-called R&B that isn’t actually R&B. This clip is way far away from that, thank heavens.

  • Tess

Silly nose? Did I miss something?

John…this wasn’t a slam. I love Ali’s nose and I think it’s damn cute. It just isn’t your typical partisan nose…it has wit and character and is a bit silly like her. Frig…it was a backhanded compliment. But kudos for being her white knight—and you haven’t commented a lot lately, it’s nice to see you around!

  • mrskiddens

Okay, with my annoyance at the unexpected text fee out of the way in previous post:

I love Allison and have been stoked about her album. This clip and the artwork make me more so! This is the first season I’ve ever been excited about two Idol’s albums (the other being Adam’s.) WooHOOOOOOO!!!

  • beehiway

glad it showed up on youtube. I was not going to give them my phone no.

Cover art is perfect! I think I can hear a good song in there, sounds like Allison, just a little more pop that what we are used to but agree with others that it is prob an artist building strategy.

Had not seen the earlier song on youtube. I like it!

Had to look up old Joan Jett videos. Can definitely see Allison doing that type of music. Her rocker side will not be held back by no stinking label co.

  • Studio57

Love the cover art- she looks stunning. Downloaded a link from ontd because i couldn’t really hear anything but her talking when I called. I have to listen to the whole thing but from what I did hear, there was none of the gravelly voiced chick, and all of the Kelly Clarkson 2.0 Whoever said it sounded alot like I Do Not Hook Up- I couldn’t agree more, but I gotta hear the whole thing I think.

I loooooveve that pic. Talk about capturing someone’s personality! Why can’t Jive get it that right more often? And that Kris of pic posted today in the headline thread! Awesome!

John M: totally with you on DC’s bonus tracks.

Man, this thread made me so siked for Allison’s album. I knew I was anxious to hear it, but a hint that they might have done her right? Now I really can’t wait!

  • PRMari

Agreed, which is why I’ve been very nervous about the fact that it was Jive who signed her. We’ll see.

Maybe she’s the one that will be different? One can hope. Dave from the Idol tour band said in a recent video chat that if Allison was given a song that she didn’t like she would just say “this sucks” and was not pushed into doing it, so it seems like she had at least a little bit of control over her songs. I have faith that there will be some good things in there. Also, that cover art gives me hope that she won’t be like the others :) I’m always an optimist…

  • becausehelives

I can’t comment on the song till i hear more but rock on Allison.

  • Rub

I can only imagine this song live.
About the cover. Allison can look as beautiful as she lets herself be, but she goes for the sleeper, unpromising look – which I DIG about her. She likes the stress look – Johnny Depp – style to her. real cool

  • butte009

I’ll wait to hear the whole song on Monday. No point in listening to a snippet, IMO. I hope it’s a good song. I’d like to see her do well post-Idol.

Oh, I wasn’t thinking it was a slam or a compliment — I was just totally confused — and I still am! :-) I’m afraid I don’t get any vibe from noses, and still have no clue what you’re talking about…

I called the number, it’s local for me. But I had trouble understanding her and didn’t know you had to ‘join the mob’ to hear the song. I also didn’t know what else I might be joining and I really don’t want commercial calls on my cel phone. So I hung up and got a text message that I’ll be paying $2.50 for.

I think Idol hit the motherlode of talent this year with Kradison.

They really did–Adam and Allison have two of the most distinctive, powerful voices I’ve ever heard, and Kris has a really lovely voice and vibe. And they all actually seem like real artists, like people who are passionate about music and creative with it.

I really, really can’t tell at all about overproduction because the overall quality of that snippet is so poor–very cellcast. So, hopefully it does actually let Allison’s voice shine through, and if it explores the higher end of her range a bit more, then hopefully there are lower register songs on the album as well. I don’t have a problem with the idea of Allison going pure hard rock, but if that’s what she wants and this album is more pop/rock, there’s plenty of time for her to get there in the future.

JohnM: slightly random, but still Allison-related: you’ve said (IIRC) that you generally like deep, powerful female voices like Allison’s, and you’ve also said (again, IIRC–if I do not remember correctly, just ignore this whole thing) that you hate Janis Joplin, who Allison is often compared to. I’m just curious, why is that?

After hearing it again a few times, I got more a Kelly Clarkson vibe than Avril or Pink, and I would be surprised if this isn’t a Max Martin track.

It IS reminiscent of some of the album tracks on Kelly’s latest. It does sound like Max Martin to me too.

I agree it sounds more like Kelly Clarkson. I went back and listened to a few Parmore and Avril songs and the closest to it was Avril’s “Girlfriend” but Allison sounded more shouty like Kelly does, which is why I stopped listening to anything but slow songs by Kelly.

  • Sherena

I like it. I like the tune a lot, and will reserve judgment on the amount of autotune for when I hear a better quality version on Monday, cuz even her speaking voice sounds tinny in that recording. The song reminds me of Avril Lavigne– especially the “oh yeah!” I think she’s being positioned rather like Demi, but with a little bit more of a mature image and sound.

I like the song cover too. It’s prettified and photoshopped but still has her quirkiness to it. Also, the bricks look cool. Especially good choice of fonts; once again, quirky and spunky but girly. The concept of the cover is not very interesting–but it’s good.

  • haruhi

Allison looks great on that cover, and the snippet was pretty good. Allison has that cute, edgy vibe reminiscent of Avril Lavigne. Good luck to Allison!

  • FifthHouseSun

Can’t tell much about the production of the song from this. I wonder why they didn’t just leak it online ‘” at least the quality would be better ‘” and there would be no text message charges.

Think it’s the text base, Q3. They want the database. Because lots of teens don’t email. Think it’s something their mothers do. And most teens on a text plan, so won’t incur extra charges. But they were foolish not to disclose on the recording: regular text charges apply. Then people who didn’t want to get texts would opt out upfront. Save everyone time and money. And no ill will established.

  • Rub

This tune packs a pretty good punch, at least in those few distorted seconds. A very ambitious release for a 4th placer. Of the last few Idol WINNERS, this one isn’t a slow jam, but more of a bursting on the scene sound to it. Jive must have big plans for her.

  • http://twitter.com/cara_lee pj

Then people who didn’t want to get texts would opt out upfront. Save everyone time and money. And no ill will established.

If anyone gives their cell phone # out and doesn’t understand that standard text rates apply, then they are idiots. They sent an opt out message immediately, so at most someone could waste is 10 cents if they don’t have a text plan. I doubt 10 cents is going to cause ill will, but people might be discouraged if they said text message rates apply. Just a thought.

  • mrskiddens

pj, what happened was I called the number just expecting to hear the snippet. I got a text back, totally unexpected. Yes it’s only 20 cents but callers should be warned, imo. Does calling the number and not expecting to get a text back make me an “idiot?” Wow :(

ETA: I neither “gave out” my number (other than by just calling) nor did I get an “opt out” or I would have chosen it. The text that came back was automatic. Just in case those of us without texting plans are misunderstood…

  • Calliope

Cannot really tell much from the small snippet/sound quality, but there is a Katy Perry meets Demi Lovato quality to it.

  • http://www.planetfierce.proboards.com rowenaaine

I like it. Even though it’s in a higher register, she is a young girl (teenager) and really needs to be marketed to other teenagers. Some of us really like her lower “Janis” mode, but that may not sell on Top 40 radio. The text/phone call snippet concept is perfect for the target demo. And the cover art is gorgeous. Thumbs up!

  • daenarys

She has far better voice than Britney, Katy, Miley, Demi et al. And I looooooove her personality (Boo! Simon). She has Kelly’s power vocals, and Pink’s pop-rock edginess. The only thing that could derail her is whether the songs will match her talent. Allison is…..cool!

  • Trillian

I have only read the posts on this page so don’t know if this was mentioned, but the beginning of the song and the end of the snippet sound EXACTLY like the SNL Christmas song… http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xU8Iz_lByOY&feature=related

Watch Allison get more promotion on her first single from Jive than Kris did. Jive wanted to sign Allison before AI was over. They knew how they wanted to promote her. I expect Allison’s single to do really well and she may just shock everyone and beat out ALL the boys in sales. She is the anti-Miliey and could be very popular with tweens. I am actually surprised at how poorly Kris is doing with his first single and Jive has to be disappointed. One would think the AI winner would have big sales at least the first week when the AI audience was buying the single. The sales sometimes drop after that but usually the first week sales are big. I wonder if Adam and Allison are going to have singles going on sale on Itunes at the same time. Maybe TPTB think that will help Allison’s sales since most Adam fans also like Allison and will buy both singles. Should be interesting to watch.

  • http://twitter.com/cara_lee pj

Does calling the number and not expecting to get a text back make me an ‘idiot?’ Wow :(

Sorry. My bad. I called from my work phone and had to punch in my cell. I knew I would get a text because that’s how these things work. I didn’t realize you got one from just calling from your cell. I’m totally wrong, and I’m sorry. :(

  • fluffybunny

I don’t like it at all. And I doubt that she will outsell Adam and Kris.

  • mrskiddens

pj your apology is gladly accepted :)

I’m gonna suggest to Allison’s peeps that they be more careful. Spam is icky, $2.50 (for some) spam is ickier.

Anyway thank you again — I figured something was missed, as you do seem kind :)

  • PRMari

I don’t like it at all. And I doubt that she will outsell Adam and Kris.

Why is this a requisite now? The competition is over.

  • Soberba

Allison looks really gorgeous on that cover! I think I could like this song. I think it will do better than LLWD.

Sometimes I worry that Adam doesn’t have a single yet because they still didn’t find a song that’s good enough (or at least good enough to live up to the crazy high expectations).

Maybe I’m just frustrated (need Adam’s single NOW!)

  • JohnM

isisdagmar: JohnM: slightly random, but still Allison-related: you’ve said (IIRC) that you generally like deep, powerful female voices like Allison’s, and you’ve also said (again, IIRC’“if I do not remember correctly, just ignore this whole thing) that you hate Janis Joplin, who Allison is often compared to. I’m just curious, why is that?

    No, you do remember correctly.

To me, the difference is tone. Janis’ voice was certainly powerful, and on occasion I’ve heard a bit of depth on some lower notes, but generally I don’t consider her to have had a deep or rich voice — frankly, it exhibited what I would describe as thinness a lot of the time. More important — most important — is the raspiness / grating nature of her tone, particularly in her higher register — I find it extremely tortuous. I’ve occasionally re-listened to some of her songs to see if there’s something I’ve missed all these years, and often I just can’t even make it through the whole song because of that raspiness — it’s like fingernails on a chalkboard to me. “But wait,” says the Allison-is-raspy crowd. Well, Allison isn’t raspy, except on rare occasions when she strains, similar to most singers — she’s husky, which is part of her gorgeous deep tone.

Also, at least some of the time, Janis’ delivery gave what I would call a twangy feel to her words, which I think made her sound thinner, in addition to simply being a feel that I dislike.

I do understand (at least part of) why people compare Allison to Janis, in that Janis was intense and did exhibit some impressive soulfulness at times. But I think Allison’s singing is way more soulful. In relating her to Janis, I think of her as what Janis might have been if she’d had physical vocal characterstics that matched her soulfulness and intensity.

  • http://www.planetfierce.proboards.com rowenaaine

Soberba, I prefer to think that Adam doesn’t have a single picked yet because it’s hard to choose between so many amazing songs! ;)

I hope Allison does really well with this – seems very top 40 friendly.

This is weird. I called from one of our landlines as soon as the number was posted several hours ago and entered my cell number, but I still haven’t gotten any texts. My wife called from our other landline and entered my cell number — still nothing. Just a lucky guy, I guess…

mrskiddens, two freakin’ fifty for a text???? Texts cost me three-tenths of a cent, and I don’t have any kind of plan at all — just a cheapo prepaid Tracfone. You have my deepest sympathy!

Ahhh…that was such a PC answer and evidence for those who say she doesn’t know how to construct a sentence just because of the way she tweets. She can too write good ;)

Oh, but she didn’t actually tweet the ROFL part, that was part of the original question.

mrskiddens, glad we cleared up the misunderstanding. :)

JohnM, that is weird that you got no text. Who knows?

BTW, I was pretty impressed with Alli’s “announcer voice” on the message, too. :-)

WOW!!!!!! I just LOWERED the key (F to E w/software), and, DAM! BAM! GAWD it sounds like Alli, her voice, HER in full bloom! The production record IS gana b killer!

Thanks for clearing that up. I did think it was kind of weird that she would put that in front of such a diplomatic answer. But I just can’t figure out how to parse some of those response tweets. btw, get back over to her site (nudge nudge)…

Hey ppwars, you just might have the seed of a little home business there — lower the whole album, burn new copies, and ship them out to the die-hards! How about posting your lowered clip on MegaUpload or somewhere? I can do it myself in GarageBand, but a lot of people don’t have that kind of capability.

O.K. I’ll get it posted somewhere & advise. I am thinking perhaps the phone xmission skews the key high. It sounds more natural to me with the pitch lower.

  • JohnM

ppwars: I am thinking perhaps the phone xmission skews the key high. It sounds more natural to me with the pitch lower.

Well, the phone transmission makes it thinner for sure, but it’s not going to change the key. But you know, it wouldn’t shock me to learn that they did record it a step or so lower and then raised it during mixing because high-pitched stuff is more ear-catching on radio. It’ll be interesting to hear whether she drops the key when she performs it live. (Ahhhh… when she performs it live… doesn’t that have a nice ring to it??)

btw, I’m wondering if you meant you lowered it from G to F rather than from F to E, as the original is in G.

  • hwc

Ya’ll must have better headphones (or imaginations) than I do if you can judge anything from that cellcast quality snippet.

  • IdolThoughts

The snippet sounds very Katy Perryish. I NEVER would have guessed that it was Allison. Maybe a cleaner version will change my opinion. I like Katy Perry…it’s not meant as an insult. It just sounds like the key she often sings in…with similar voice inflections. Doesn’t sound like Alli’s normal raspy blurred together lyrics. Can’t wait to hear more.

Go Allison, you’re my second fav. after Kris! I’m looking forward to hearing the single! I hope it’s a hit.

I am actually surprised at how poorly Kris is doing with his first single and Jive has to be disappointed.

I’d have to disagree with you there. Kris’s single is not to be counted out by any means at this point.

The snippet sounds like a Kelly song, which is fine by me. Kelly is my 2nd all time fav. Allison was my number two fav this year. I will definately be buying this single! I also love the cover art!
Does this release (with the intro and texting-plus the awesome cover) seem better thought out than Kris’s? They are both with Jive, so does something like this come down to who is managing you?

Tiger, I think it comes down to your A&R team.

While I do think LLWD is a strong song that, with more of a marketing push, would do just fine, I do find it weird that Allison has the nice cover art, had the earlier photo shoot and everything, and general DOES seem to be a little more complete as a product than Kris.

I still find it so weird that Jive had no cover art for Kris’s single, except the weird Communist Russia looking design, with no picture :-(

Then again, Kris did get some primo PR ops the first week, so we’ll see what Allison gets coming up (hopefully some good ones).

  • Suzanne

I find the song a little hard to hear. It’s more pop than I thought it would be but she is being marketed to young teens.

what’s with Jive and red, black and white? Alison’s and Kris’s singles and David Archuleta’s album last year. It’s like no other colors exist.

That said, it’s a great picture of Alison. Great personality.

Hard to tell with the poor quality of this clip, but it seems like they altered Allison’s voice — too bad IMO. I really like that raspy, smokey quality of her voice. But I still like the song.

  • JohnM

ppwars, got it — thanks. And you’re right — it does sound more natural, more like her, with the lowered key.

You know, listening to the clip makes me feel like I’m a kid back in the 60s again, listening to pop songs on a crappy AM radio!

Suzanne: what’s with Jive and red, black and white? Alison’s and Kris’s singles and David Archuleta’s album last year. It’s like no other colors exist.

But it’s not just Jive. See David Cook’s album, Kings of Leon’s, and John Legend’s (forgot about that last one, but my wife mentioned it to me).

  • Mtlfan

I noticed the other day it looks just like “Mad Men,” too. Or their titles at any rate. I guess red, white and black is just the color scheme du jour.

  • springboard

I like it so far. The vibe reminds me of the 80′s punk rock like Debbie Harris (Blondie), with a current sound of course.

  • Nico

    To tiger92:

Allison’s A&R is Teresa LaBarbera Whites (she’s also the Senior Vice President of A&R Department of Jive)
    - she discovered Destiny’s Child and Jessica Simpson
    - she launched solo careers of Beyonce and Kelly Rowland (she managed them in the beginning)
    - currently she’s managing Pink, Britney Spears and BSB… and now Allison

She’s pretty good handling young female talents! Here’s a cool article about her: http://www.singeruniverse.com/whites.htm

Kris did use text messaging to let his fans hear LLWD. Actually, Jive has been using texting with Kris for a couple of months, and the message about LLWD was actually the third or fourth message that he’s sent out.

I thin the PR for both Kris and Allison is on track, and it’s hard to knock Kris’ PR when his song debuted on the biggest top 40 station in the country last week. Or when, that 23 second snippet that got so many hits on youtube, was actually part of a marketing campaign that is being heard on over 30 different radio stations around the country.

  • monte

If it is not the marketing, then why is Kris’ single not doing well in sales. First week sales expectations for Idols are high because they come into the game with an already made fanbase ready to buy the first thing they put out. I still say that Jive must be disappointed in sales for Kris single so far. That doesn’t mean it could change but right now things are not looking so good IMO.

  • babybelle32

monte, we haven’t even seen a full week of sales figures for Kris’ single yet, it was only out for three days. It’s a little soon to start jumping to conclusions.

  • cheese

I think I’m going to love this song. It sort of reminds me of “All Day and All of the Night” and “Mickey” at the same time (oh god, how old am I?), but with a sound that will fit right on the radio in 2010. Allison might end up being the only season 8 Idol to get my $$.

  • summersnow

I feel that it’s because of the Friday release and total lack of advertising initially. IMO his single would have charted in the top 10 if Jive has done the normal Tuesay release with the advertising because you would have to rely on the combined purchase power of hardcore fans and casual listeners to push the single, just like how his 3 songs charted in the top 10 right after AI finale.

  • summersnow

Oh this thread seems to be spinning off-topic.

I think it’s a great, catchy song from Allison. She always reminds me of Kelly Clarkson and if marketed right, she could be huge. Even though I’m a Kris fan, it’s possible that she might even outsell those who placed before her.

  • ppwars

Straight from Booker T’ and the MG’s “Green Onions” to you: “That Girl” by Maxi Priest, Shaggy on the rap. If you hate rap, give this a spin @ http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f4aj1WL4K70 . My point is: you may find delight in a musical style that you normally do not, as the rap in “That Girl” did with me in the context.

SO, do not prejudge Alli’s poppish song nor the likelyhood of more on her album. The right song is coo in any genre. BTW, if there is any good nasty rap I have yet to hear it, but I am open – words count.

  • JohnM

No older than a fine wine that has come into its own. At least that’s what I tell myself…

Yeah, you’re right — the guitar riff is very close to All Day — which wasn’t far off from You Really Got Me — the Kinks might not have been virtuosos, but they knew that you can make a lot of hay out of a simple guitar riff.

But really — Mickey?? I understand why you thought of it, but did you really have to put it in my head too? ;-)

summersnow: Even though I’m a Kris fan, it’s possible that she might even outsell those who placed before her.

Thank you very much for bringing some sane objectivity to the sea of my-idol-is-better-than-your-idol. While I think that Allison is the greatest singer to come along in my lifetime, I have no expectations about whether she’ll be a commercial success. No one knows which of these guys will sell more than the others, and it doesn’t matter one bit. The only thing I care about is whether they — especially Allison — sell enough to get a second album.

  • springboard

I really have no high expectations for Kradison (its best to keep your expectations low, and if something great happens, you’ll be happy :) ) But, there is just something about Allie that makes me think she can have a nice long career.

I can’t wait till she opens up a tour for a big time artist.

  • JohnM

Well, I can’t wait until she does a small-venue tour of her own — a full-length set, close to the audience, without wasting money on some other act that I don’t care about. Hmmm, unless she opens for somebody like a Paramore — then I’m down with that too!

    hmmm…

Hard to hear, but what I hear I’m not thrilled with. Sounds really generic Kelly Clarkson 2.0, but without the catchiness of some of Kelly’s tunes. I really like Allison so I was hoping for a bit better, but it’s hard to judge until you can actually hear it in its entirety and not played through a windtunnel.

Still, sounds like something that could be played on kid pop radio stations (radio disney and the like) and could be a hit. I just never really thought of Allison as a kid pop singer, she has a more mature sound.

Again, I’m not sure, it could be a whole other song when you can actually hear it, but I’m a tad disappointed, hopefully it sounds better when you can hear the full version.

  • JohnM

Daniel B: Hard to hear, but what I hear I’m not thrilled with. Sounds really generic Kelly Clarkson 2.0,

I had a similar reaction when I first heard it, which was through a phone — a generic Kelly-type clip that could have been sung by pretty much anyone. But then I heard it a second time through a different phone, and it sounded more like Allison, and it sounded even more like her once I downloaded it and listened to it on headphones.

but without the catchiness of some of Kelly’s tunes.

I think it’s very catchy — I had it stuck in my head most of the weekend. Also see my comment below about the “oh-oh oh-ohs”, which are certainly a “catchiness device”.

Still, sounds like something that could be played on kid pop radio stations (radio disney and the like) and could be a hit. I just never really thought of Allison as a kid pop singer, she has a more mature sound.

While there are indeed kid pop elements in it, I felt that it sounds more mature than, for example, the chorus of My Life Would Suck. For one thing, the minor key and (what I can make out of) Allison’s tone make it sound darker. Additionally, one of the main things that make it sound kid-poppish is the “oh-oh oh-ohs” in the chorus, and those immediately reminded me of the “oh-oh oh-ohs” in I Do Not Hook Up.

So, all in all, I felt that it actually sounds like they may have done a good job of “spanning the generations” — some kid pop elements for the youngsters, but some more mature elements for the older folks.

But yeah, it’s tough to draw hard conclusions based on such a short, crappy-sound-quality clip.
