Adam Lambert Smacks Down Some Fans

Adam tweeted a photo with Miley Cyrus as a distraction! Ms Miley is so fun, he says.

Adam Lambert is feeling a little prickly today! He tweets a missive to his fans:

It’s come to my attention fans are givin’ Tommy shit. Why?? He’s my friend!

Onstage kissing antics were ‘for your entertainment’ nothing more.

And “fans” please refrain from judging my personal life negatively. A few of u #needtogetoneofyourown

Remember it’s MY life and I thank you for tuning in.

At least he didn’t call them smelly! (Sorry, I couldn’t resist).

Tommy is a member of Adam’s band, and the recipient of the infamous AMA (and tour!) kiss. Right before the reprimand, Adam suggested to Tommy via twitter that the get a tat together.

I guess there were some negative tweets after that because about 15 minutes later. BAM.

OTT fans ruin it for the sane ones. I don’t blame Adam for telling the cray cray to back OFF.  I’m surprised Adam still reads his twitter @ replies.

  • lorismile

I love it when he goes on his rants and slaps down some of the crays!!

    Best day ever!!!

I also think that will be the end of the onstage antics, but I could be wrong.

  • koshka

    LOL

Lambert may yet motivate me to give his music a second try based on sheer personality.

While I realize that calling out fans is a high-risk move and can have repercussions that an artist (sensibly) deems too undesirable to stomach — I can’t dislike his standing up for his right to live his own personal life without fan assistance. I hope he gets what he wants.

  • pineappletree

I had to stop following Adam and his twitter feed. It is like a legit psych ward…so many loons.

  • sr4mjc

Heh, a good twitter smackdown is fun. I doubt it reached the intended, but it’s entertaining. It’s been a while!

I never saw the hate for Tommy in my feed, but I saw some hate to Adam because of Sauli. No one I follow of course, but saw some of the cray tweets referenced. Twitter sometimes is the devil.

Kinda hard to call these BSC cray ‘true fans.’

  • lovingadam

    i LOVE this guy!

  • gangreen29

Isn’t Tommy straight? Why can’t people get that through their thick skulls?

ETA I do love me some Miley

  • Dakota01

It’s a shame that Adam has to deal with this nonsense after having just returned from a relaxing vacation in paradise. Some of these so-called “fans” need to get a grip on reality. I actually saw a tweet from someone yesterday who claimed she could no longer be a fan of Adam’s because he was in a relationship with Sauli and not with Tommy. Some “fans” seriously need to get a life. Good for Adam for speaking out. These crays need to be smacked down and put in their place.

  • sr4mjc

Isn’t Tommy straight? Why can’t people get that through their thick skulls?

Yes, he’s only been saying it forever. Sometimes people can’t distinguish fan fiction from reality. :(

  • Mark

Kinda hard to call these BSC cray ‘true fans.’

Eh, on what qualification are they not? Idolatry (heh) was never based in complete rationality to begin with, so why should it at its most pure form? Not that fandom is always a good thing.

That said…. gotta admit it’s entertaining to watch! And good for him re: sticking up for his personal life.

  • koshka

well at least the cray cray don’t have a wiki page to destroy.. or did I speak too soon? *goes to check to see if Sauli has a page*

  • platoken

I can hear the stampede coming to this thread….lol ;). Didn’t Miley say before she wasn’t really a fan of Adam and called him “weird?”

  • kidding

Adam’s twitter rant was not a result of some negative tweets after his tat tweet to Tommy… There’s a lot more history to this but I guess it’s easier to make quick and simple guesses in a blog post.

  • koshka

OMG I really did check … this is what I found.

Eh, on what qualification are they not?

In my opinion, anyone tweeting to Adam that he’s a man whore who broke Tommy’s heart is more of a Tommy fan than an Adam fan, right? I don’t actually know what hate Tommy has gotten, I’ve seen more ‘Adam stop being a slut, Tommy is ready now.. ‘ kinda stuff.

Part of me wonders if it’s easier for some people to accept Adam dating Tommy than an actual gay man.

And thankfully Sauli doesn’t have twitter because some of the stuff to him is downright nasty. Always hard for the people Idols are dating.

Whatever, good for him for putting down overzealous Twitter crazies! I ain’t mad at him.

It started way back when his religious fans either sent him a bible or quotes from the bible telling him his gay life was not God’s way.

  • girlygirl

Good for Adam for defending Tommy and sticking up for Adam himself to be able to live his personal life the way — and with whoever — HE wants — not how a handful of BSC fans want him to do. Unfortunately, I don’t know if those fans will get the message.

  • Mark

Eh, not necessarily. Lord knows people are fans of people and things and hold them to exact standards. Apparently, those may include being attached only to your straight drummer friend, LOL!

Part of me wonders if it’s easier for some people to accept Adam dating Tommy than an actual gay man.

I… don’t think that’s really it. Unless someone can pull up something to convince me otherwise. I think there’s just some bizarre, narrow, and specific demands here, that’s all.

It started way back when his religious fans either sent him a bible or quotes from the bible telling him his gay life was not God’s way.

Ok, I admit I find that kind of… hysterical. Talk about delusion.

  • girlygirl

    nvm

  • Studio57

I don’t have alot of people on my twitter feed but from what i can tell you have the stans that want Sauli and Adam together, and the ones that insist he should be with Tommy. You even have some that are more fans of Tommy than Adam. Most of the peeps on my twitter feed are not cray and just eyeroll about the whole deal. All I want to know about his album #2. Could give a shit less who he is dating as long as it makes him happy.

And yes, Miley did tell Seacrest on his radio show that Adam was “not her type” after getting cut off from asking if he was gay.

  • TwigLA

So is it a slow news day in Adamland that some of his more insane ‘fans’ need to create some drama?

I don’t follow Adam, his life, or his twitter, but some retweets made it to my feed. So Adam is dating some guy so they’re trashing his bandmate and friend Tommy? Not getting this and don’t think I want to. :)

Oh, and I see him with Miley Cyrus here? Is she going to be attacked next?

  • sr4mjc

Eh, not necessarily. Lord knows people are fans of people and things and hold them to exact standards. Apparently, those may include being attached only to your straight drummer friend, LOL!

That’s good, I thank you for your perspective.

I do hope Sauli never gets on Twitter and sees the hate, he seems like a cool dude.

And I wish people wouldn’t tweet Adam that Sauli isn’t good enough, etc. Because we don’t know these people, geesh.

Wow! Love seeing Adam calling out the idiots who overstep the boundaries of being a fan. It’s not anyone else’s business what he do in his personal life and voting for someone, buying a concert ticket or an artist album, does not give a fan a say in the artist personal business. Bravo Adam!

High on my Not-To-Do List is berating performers for how they live, vote, or amuse themselves while nekkid. I figure I can ignore stuff and buy the music, or I can deem myself sufficiently appalled that I don’t buy the music. Either way, it’s doubtful the performer gives a shit what I think.

[FTR, "gay" is not something I object to. But I'm sure plenty of people whose music I buy live in ways I wouldn't agree with if I knew.]

Hmm, I don’t know peeps, I think this might signal progress. Bear with me now…. This lunacy is no different than the apocolyptic reactions to David Cook dating blond bimbos, or Elliott Yamin’s arm-lick heard round the idol blog world. So, at least we know the nutburgers don’t discriminate! They are equal opportunity offenders in the “butting your nose into the relationship of a stranger you’ll never meet, and who has no interest in your opinion whatsoever”. See? Progress.

That said of course, anyone who would tweet a celebrity about their personal life, like they have some kind of personal stake in it, is a fucking whackadoodle. So, smack down away Adam!

I hadn’t heard that, though it doesn’t surprise me. Even Danny gets some ~intense people quoting bible verses at him (for pursuing a career in secular music/performing venues, vs. a uniquely Christian niche).

Do remember Adam talking in interviews that he just didn’t want to be given the bibles, period. As he is not Christian, or even that active in his Jewish faith as I recall. And/or was he being asked to sign bibles? Which just seems weird to me anyway. Not very devout to be using your Bible as an autograph book :?

Good for Adam for speaking up if he’s having people say wildly OTT and intrusive stuff to him about his personal life or what some bizarre fans want to be his personal life.

  • fuzzywuzzy

Good for Adam! I’m glad that he makes sure that certain BSC fans get a clear message about backing off. It may not help in the case of the worst ones, but at least he’s made his feelings clear.

True… wait, what about Elliott? That was way before my time in the Idolsphere.

I do hope Sauli never gets on Twitter and sees the hate, he seems like a cool dude.

Maybe he should just create an account and then never use it so the crazies can attack it. Diversion for the win!

Oh, now that’s classic. There’s probably some great old testament stuff you could get clobbered over by the real crazies, too.

  • girlygirl

If Sauli is ever tempted to get twitter, he should talk to Katy Allen, Chris Daughtry’s wife, Brad, Drake or anyone else who is on twitter who is currently or was formerly involved with an Idol — they have all gotten more than their share of nasty tweets from so-called “fans” and could likely tell him many many scary stories

  • HotHotHot

Maybe he should just create an account and then never use it so the crazy energy can attack it. Diversion for the win!

Then Lambert’s people could make a list of the “fans” who send abusive tweets to that account and block ‘em from Lambert’s twitter! This plan is turning out to be full of win.

Seriously, I don’t know why celebrities don’t block the fans who are blatantly out of control. Yes, they’d run around shrieking like crazed hyenas… but how many have social networks that stretch beyond fandom? And wouldn’t this at least put a definite time limit to how long they’ll shriek, rather than letting them do it in perpetuity? I suppose there’d be interviewers asking “why’d you block ‘em,” but it’s not like there isn’t already publicity for a very small number of OTT individuals behaving in a way that isn’t typical of fandom. And who’d consider somebody a villain for being offended at attacks on his boyfriend?

  • aa618892

Haha! I love ranting Adam! And these were very well deserved smack downs, IMO. Talk about entertainment!

  • fuzzywuzzy

There are STILL Kradam fans who actually believe that Adam and Kris are “together”??? Yikes!

  • Milly21

god its so delusional. over the past few days after Adam was seen with Sauli in Bora Bora the fandom has been going to crap. So many people tweeting Tommy to step off of Adam’s relationship with Sauli and so many more people heartbroken that Adam supposedly broke Tommy’s heart by leaving him in the dust to be with Sauli and therefore a lot of people were tweeting Adam awful crap, Like TOMMY DOESNT NEED YOU ANYWAY.

It’s like for the love of god, stop being so delusional! they were NEVER together. Tommy is straight anyway. This reminds me of the wank that occurred after Adam starting seeing Drake 2 years ago. The Kradam shippers were going absolutely cray saying how Adam and Kris are still dating eachother on the downlow like WTFFF.

Also people who cant accept that a straight man can kiss another man and not be gay themselves are so closeminded. it’s called acting. actors do it all the time. Stop calling Tommy gay for crissake. What? Did people think Adam and Tommy were liars when they said Tommy is in fact straight?

It’s mental! whenever i read Adam’s feed I have to do so many facepalms. I’ve read young girls calling Adam a father figure and just the other day I read this one girl telling him “ADAM YOU TOLD ME YOU LOVED ME!? WHY ARE YOU IGNORING ME? DID I UPSET YOU? IM SORRY HONEY!!” God some people have serious mental issues!

  • kidding

Sauli’s Big Brother history has probably desensitized him to a certain extent against BSC people and their OTT comments. He seemed and seems to be able to turn a deaf ear to them.

And I would be really surprised if he would ever get a twitter account. I always got the impression that he didn’t want to see all the commentary there is floating around about him after Big Brother, and I don’t think that has changed.

  • SpenserJ

True… wait, what about Elliott? That was way before my time in the Idolsphere.

Oh, those were good times here at mj’s! Elliott was dating some hot model, and someone saw him lick her arm in a restaurant or something (the memory is getting vague). And, the uberfans on all the boards went apeshit. It was freaking hilarious.

I’m trying to recall if that was when the people at one of Elliott’s fansites decided MJ should be eaten by fireants. Or, if that was over something else. LOL – I need Kirsten here – she remembers everything.

Things like this make me wish we stopped getting as many reasonable people as we do get into the Idol upper echelon. Oh man how I wish that Adam didn’t hafta see some of the insanity that goes on in his @replies. Don’t get me wrong, he gets tweeted love and adoration almost constantly, but interspersed with that is some serious cray.

When people take what should be harmless and fun shipping fantasies and actually legit believe them to the point they try to impose their fantasies on his real life, they need help. They are only a small fraction of his fandom, but they are sooo loud, and have been completely relentless tweeting their batshit craziness at him since he started dating Sauli.

So hells yeah Adam for sticking up for yourself and calling out people who need to get a grip on reality. And yay cute pix too!

I don’t go on twitter much but I had to go check this one out. I went and looked at Adam’s @ replies and see that he has a huge young twitter following. Looks like a large segment of his twitter fan base is 18 and younger. I saw older fans on there but a far larger segment are teens. They are at that age where they get into a persons personal life. Look at what’s happened when Bieber tries to date someone. Looks like too a lot of them are Bieber fans too. That could go a long way in explaining things.

You know, good for Adam. Just tell them to STFU and even if they don’t… at least you said it. Twitter feeds for these guys are scary. I peek into Cook’s sometimes and it makes me nauseated. And he doesn’t have a girlfriend right now (well, not a public one – who knows what’s out there super sekrit) but when he does… Lord.

  • CindyM

Eh, its not only the “We want Adam to be with Tommy”, it’s the “We want Adam to be with Kris” nonsense that’s out there too. There were Kradam fans on twitter and on an ONTD community that were saying that Kris and Adam were together, that’s why the dog didn’t tweet goodbye to Kris when he came back to Los Angeles. They’re convinced that the divorce is coming any day and that Adam is dating Sauli so it won’t look like Kris is leaving Katy for Adam. They also said that Kris’s church concert was the “last goodbye” to his church lifestyle. The same woman wanted Kris and Tommy to start hanging around together, get drunk and start macking on each other because then the paparazzi would be all over it and they’d put Paris and Lyndsey to shame with all the pictures. Batshit comes in many forms..lol.

Holy Crap. They’re even nuttier than I thought. Who has time to sit around making up fantasy lives for strangers? They should be putting that energy into something more productive. (And really, anything would be more productive than that, so I’m not picky).

  • CanadianFan

Adam is such a positive-energy person….except on twitter. Over time, he has spent most of his 140 characters/ tweet berating the crazies, and very few keystrokes, proportionally, to saying nice things about his generous, loving, supportive fanbase. It seems so out of character, which goes to prove that I really don’t know Adam’s character at all.

LOL they scare the crap out us actual fans too! It’s maddening because a small portion of the fans can make themselves seem so big by their borderline nutjob dedication to keeping up their cray chatter on twitter, comms, forums, article comments.

I try to tell myself that every fandom has its share of crazies, and when I go places like ONTD main and see Britney and Gaga fans ripping each other apart, or back when Xtina’s album came out I watched the cray in both those fandoms gleefully pile on and savage her admittedly all-over-the-place album, or more recently Beliebers promising grisly death to Selena Gomez, that it’s not just Adam that has to deal with it. But dang, it doesn’t make it any easier.

  • musicality

Thank you for checking that out and clarifying the age of this particular BSCs. It would totally be a face palm if they were in their 30s, 40s or older.

It’s that age group. Those early teen years where everything is so dramatic and life or death. These girls write fanfic about Adam’s personal life and get overly involved in it. There is a sizeable crossover of Bieber fans into Adam fans. You could see it happening over the last year when the two did concerts together. Adam is picking up a lot of young girls as fans and with young girls comes a lot of drama. Plus too the idol world picks up a lot of lunacy in itself. Older fans act just as nutty but in different ways. I see older fans of idol tweeting RCA that they are not spending enough money on their fav idol. For some reason Idol seems to produce a lot of over involvement. Or maybe its that way for all fanbases even those outside of idol.

Adam has thanked his fans plenty of times on Twitter. He says what amazing fans he has in every interview TV or radio. Alot of us respond more to the negative than the positive on the internet. Look at posts here for example. When an Idol does something good and kind, there are relatively few responses. When someone does something that’s perceived as negative, it’s often a big pile-on. I don’t think that has anything to do with character, btw. I do find it interesting that when the smackdowns have happened, they’ve usually been on behalf of others. The last time this type of thing happened was when some BSC fans were attacking Kris on twitter for his “middle aged ladies” dance tweets. This time it started with the attacks on Tommy.

Awww Mel, some of them are. Hate to break it to you. The “You broke Tommy’s heart because you couldn’t wait for him to finally realize he’s gay and now I hate you!” lady was in her 30’s.

LOL! Glad to know that there is no age discrimination when it comes to crazy and obsessed people.

And someone just sent Adam a link to their Adommy fanfic. Clearly didn’t get the message.

  • Milly21

yeah most of these poor crazies seem to be in the 12-16 age range. I think Adam’s main twitter following are young kids, teens and twentysomethings, or maybe im wrong but thats what i mainly see when i read his twitter feed. A lot of them ARE Bieber and Disney fans as some of you have pointed out. i saw this poor little girl, with Adommy in her username just soooo devastated that Adommy is officially dead now that Adam tweeted they were never real. I sort of feel bad for her tbh.

it just sucks now that a lot of these looney tunes are probably gonna ruin Adam and Tommy’s onstage antics that a lot of fans seem to like haha

  • Teri63

Good for Adam! I was reading Twitter yesterday and commenting to my husband how absolutely crazy some of the tweeters were. I love reading comments, but I actually had to stop reading because it was disturbing and kind of depressing–the complete antithesis of what casual fan girling (or fan-boying)should be. While I was sad for Adam that he’d have to come back from paradise to such garbage, I was hoping he’d put his foot down. It probably won’t do much good in terms of changing the crazies, but it certainly reaffirms the respect his non-crazy fans have for him.

and see Britney and Gaga fans ripping each other apart, or back when Xtina’s album came out the cray in both I watched those fandoms gleefully pile on and savage her admittedly all-over-the-place album, or more recently Beliebers promising grisly death to Selena Gomez,

Britney, Michael J, Lady GaGa and Bieber have really BSC fans. Chris Brown too. Actually Chris Brown’s fans kind of mirror Chris Brown and are always threatening violence against anyone who slights Chris. Rihanna and Kesha’s fans are kind of quiet. It was entertaining though watching the Madge, GaGa smackdown.

  • dcglam

Oh my……. I just love coming home to Adam news. Ya never know what you’re gonna get!!
So, it looks as though some “fans” are upset because they feel Adam is cheating on poor Tommy. Sorry, but I find this totally hilarious.
I am constantly amazed by the number of serious loons out there. It is truly mind boggling!

No kidding!! I happened to stay in the same hotel he did for the concert in Hyannis. I can’t even begin to tell you everything we witnessed!!! SCARY!!!! The hotel finally had to put a security guard on the hallway to his rooms so fans couldn’t access it.

I don’t agree with these statements at all. I think Adam uses his Twitter account quite responsibly, balancing the positive and negative. His most typical tweets have been to thank fans for being a great audience or donating to a cause, to promote others’ artistic endeavors (both for his friends and other industry professionals), to inform us of stuff that’s coming up, AND to set the record straight when something has been misrepresented in the media or some fans have overstepped. He’s been recognized for being among the most influential tweeters in terms of soliciting charity aid and just a little over a week ago by the Grammy’s, when he was one of just two artists asked to serve on this year’s social media panel. If he were just being a Negative Nate, I doubt he’d be getting those accolades for his positive influence.

  • Mark

Holy Crap. They’re even nuttier than I thought. Who has time to sit around making up fantasy lives for strangers? They should be putting that energy into something more productive. (And really, anything would be more productive than that, so I’m not picky).

At least I pick fictional characters to obsess over and make up fantasy lives for. (Long-standing comic book fan here!) LOL, I don’t know. It’s fun to see the sheer delusion with some of it, though.

Just reading through the Lana Jade thread. Oh. My. God. That’s great.

Did you see the Chris Brown threats to the Grammy’s and to Rihanna for not lifting the protective order so he could attend?? CRAZY.

The Chris Brown crazies make me sad. That’s where idolization becomes perverted, and a person’s image overturns a belief structure. It’s rarer than people think, but it’s sad to see when it happens.

  • soverymel

There is a sizeable crossover of Bieber fans into Adam fans. You could see it happening over the last year when the two did concerts together. Adam is picking up a lot of young girls as fans and with young girls comes a lot of drama.

Every once in awhile I do like looking at Adam’s latest followers, it’s fascinating to me to see such a wide range of different people that are the latest to just start following him. It gives me hope that the cray will be diluted eventually. Although LOL with all the Beiber and Jonas fans, maybe I’m fooling myself that there might be less dramaz.

Even when the Adam/Kris fanwars were at their worst, it never came within a mile of the viciousness and crudeness that the Chris Brown/Rhianna fans has escalated to. I saw two articles about Rihanna performing and Chris Brown not being allowed to attend. The comments made me physical ill, because of the level of hate coming from the fans on both sides. I certainly don’t blame Rihanna for not lifting the protection order and allowing the guy who beat her to attend.

  • Mel1

I think Adam smacks down his fans appropriately. Again, early on, he smacked them down when they were dissing Danny. Adam tweeted he and Danny are friends, have always been. Didn’t that even end up on Perez’s site? Much, much latter, he smacked them down to defend Kris. He is one of the most loyal persons around.

Damn, I miss all the fun. Too bad I have that life that Adam is requiring of his fans, lol!!!! This is why so many find fault with him, but the very reason why I admire him. He takes no shit. Not even from the BSC. I think if another runner up, who use to be thought of as the best runner up ever could have used this tactic, and twitter, his career wouldn’t be in the crapper right now. Fans have no reason to dictate your personal life. Period. Yep, I buy his records and shit, but thats what I want, his music. And the merriment that comes with days like these. And I thought I was gonna come here today and see some fangirling over those pictures I saw on twitter this morning. Can’t take an eye off the ball with this guy, lol.

  • webster

I don’t twitter, so maybe this is naive, but: can’t a person just set it up so they only get tweets from who they want to get tweets from? Eg, could Adam set it so only his actual friends and business acquaintenances can tweet him? Or, if he wants random people to tweet him, can he (or a hired minion and/or mom) block the nut jobs? Removing the nutjobs’ access seems the sanest way to handle it, so he doesn’t have to see what irrelevant people care to tell him. Or maybe twitter doesn’t support that?

  • limi

I’m glad to see Adam stands up for himself and his friends. He is entitled to his own life and fans are not entitled to be the directors. I’m sure most stars have to deal with crazy fans of some kind. Adam is always honest about his feelings. Oh well, some drama for President’s Day.

You can add people to your following list and you will only see their tweets in your feed. I’m sure that Adam does that. However, people check their @replies (ex. @adamlambert) and there is no filter, you see everything unless you’ve individually blocked people. It’s hard to do that with the crazies, because alot of the time they set up multiple accounts. We know Adam checks his @replies because he’s said he likes to get feedback from fans about songs, videos, etc. and he’s used fanart tweeted to him as his avatar. Personally, I think he was probably alerted to the Tommy hate today by Tommy himself. Tommy retweeted an Adam tweet from last year to fans yesterday about not attacking people.

  • Kirsten

Oh, those were good times here at mj’s! Elliott was dating some hot model, and someone saw him lick her arm in a restaurant or something (the memory is getting vague). And, the uberfans on all the boards went apeshit. It was freaking hilarious

    .

LOL It was Dingo that spotted them at a rib place in Rochester, I think it was. It was Elliott’s birthday and a bunch of the Idols took him out for dinner during the tour (Dingo was hoping Taylor would walk in, but he was off doing the GMA concert…how do I remember this stuff?). Anyway, Dingo started out by saying that she’d spotted all these Idols and mentioned Elliott was there with his girlfriend. She was immediately grilled about whether it was his “evil” girlfriend from Idol times or the rumoured hot new one. Dingo said she had no idea who was who and she tried not to look so closely because he was licking her arm and …BOOM…epic fan meltdown.

I’m trying to recall if that was when the people at one of Elliott’s fansites decided MJ should be eaten by fireants. Or, if that was over something else. LOL – I need Kirsten here – she remembers everything.

Nah. The fire ant invansion came later in the fall when the Idols were released from their 3 month waiting period and folkgirl kept insisting that being an indie artist was a tough road to success. MJ refused to ban her for such slander and others backed her up so the fire ants came to visit (there were actually quite a number of creative ways the Elliott fans came up with offing MJ…it was actualy kind of creepy how people would think stuff like that). MJ has suffered many a fire ant invansion from pretty much every fan group in the Idolsphere since then for allowing people to post that they don’t like something.

I don’t twitter, so maybe this is naive, but: can’t a person just set it up so they only get tweets from who they want to get tweets from?

This seems like a good moment to do Twitter 101.

It is possible to make an account private, but that means nobody but friends can see outgoing tweets, either. So a private account is useless for PR. A number of celebrity consorts (e.g., the gal getting engaged to the Idol alum further down the page) have private Twitters — but this means they can’t use their Twitter to promote their own projects. So if Sauli Koskinen were a hot Finnish businessman with a blog that provides blinding insight into herring futures, and he was using Twitter to build an audience for that blog, he’d be stuck with a public account that anybody could send tweets to.

With a public account, you see the tweets of people you follow. These appear directly in your timeline. You can also go look at your @replies (tweets sent to you by people you don’t follow) to see if anything interesting is going on. Anybody you haven’t blocked can also see your @replies but cannot reconstruct your timeline easily. (It can be done with a list but that would be obsessive behavior.)

If you block somebody, you don’t see that person’s tweets in your timeline, and s/he can’t see your tweets. The blockee’s followers can still see them ranting, though.

  • abbysee

Dayum, I was gonna post my crazy Kradam crap that I read a while back, but mine pales in comparison to this stuff. Wow! This puts the cray and crazy!

But Adam has made it clear that he likes to know what people are talking about. And we know that he does read his @replies since he sometimes replies to fans or RTs some fan art or something. I’m just here to defend ONTD. IMO, the stans on ONTD don’t take themselves nearly as seriously as the “glamberts.” Yes, people get into catfights about Britney vs. Xtina and whatever… but you don’t see ONTDers harassing radio stations or buying their faves’ CDs to “donate” to improve their chart status. Like, the average Gaga fan on ONTD doesn’t keep up on the personal lives of her backup dancers, the way Adam fans do with his band.

Eh, just different flavors and levels of cray, with different priorities. I find the ONTD stuff entertaining tbh, one reason I go there is that no matter what shenanigans are going on in the comments, they’re usually pretty hilarious. Especially when you’re not really invested in any of the artists involved. But I’m sure there are tons of Gaga, Britney, Xtina* etc fans who wouldn’t even think of making a snarky horrible comment about another artist on some entertainment gossip community. I guess my point is that you can’t really paint an entire fanbase with the characteristics of the most extreme and vocal factions.

I’be been critical of Adam often and, frankly, I’ve found him a bit full of himself, but in this case I’d give him a high five and a pat on the back. Thank goodness at least on AIer isn’t cowed by his nutty, entitled fans. I hated the “smelly” comment way back when but this is totally appropriate and overdue. My guess is there are a few fans who suddenly don’t appreciate his vaunted lack of a filter.

Limit and boundary setting. Other idols, take note (though the likelihood of some of the cray cray getting a life is nil. They’ve attached themselves to him because they lead generally sad lives).

  • connie0128

While the vast majority of crazy OTT fans are harmelss (but VERY annoying), there is a small percentage that have the potential to be truly harmful to our idols or people they care about (i.e., Mark David Chapman who killed John Lennon). It’s frightening to think about the possibilities.

  • girlygirl

What I want to know is how few fans persist in believing Adam’s romantic relationship with whoever (fill in the BSC fan’s choice here) is reality rather than a figment of their imagination — despite any evidence to support their fantasies. (For example, I know the Kradam krazies wouldn’t be happy to read ZorroPup’s tweet from last night talking about how Kris is coming home on Friday :) )

Oh, I don’t even have to look at Lambert’s @replies to know he’s seeing fans on Twitter rehash who the cray-cray are, whether their behavior counts as cray-cray, whether he’s right or wrong to call them out for being cray-cray, whether it’s prying or merely devotion to be “involved” in his personal life, and so on and on and on.

Last night, Cook tweeted something controversial just as I was parking for a live show. I endured a 45-minute GA line (doors were 90 minutes late), heard a local metal band, heard terrific guitar playing from Marnie Stern, decided I wasn’t up for the musical abstractions of mathcore and would skip the headliner, drove across my (large) city, stopped at Walgreen’s for snacks, got home, made food… filling in total three-and-a-half hours… and Cook was still being deluged with tweets telling him what he should or shouldn’t have done.

Having given his tweet the same 10 seconds of attention any random opinion in my timeline is lucky to get, I was astonished.

    Twitter is the devil.

Now, though, if peeps start writing fanfic and shipping stuff about ZorroPup or Fozzy or Adam’s canary (sorry, don’t know what pets Adam may have at the moment, if any), that would really be disturbing  :?

While the vast majority of crazy OTT fans are harmelss (but VERY annoying), there is a small percentage that have the potential to be truly harmful to our idols or people they care about (i.e., Mark David Chapman who killed John Lennon). It’s frightening to think about the possibilities.

It’s all of those possibilities that cause stars to hire bodyguards and install high tech security to keep out the crazies and psychos.

  • Niall

Not me. It’s one of the things I most admire about him

That’s because you weren’t one of the fans targeted by his tweets. ;)

jammasta, why? I am sad for Miley – and even sadder for her dad, who was quoted a day or so ago that Hannah Montana took his family away from him and ruined his daughter, it was a very sad little interview spot. Is that what you meant?

  • milwlovesadam

What a fun day to be a fan of Adam’s! Love the rant! Love how he comes to the defense of his friends.

I don’t know if he takes the time to lurk here or not. But, we do tend to love the man here at MJ’s.

I only want him to be happy and make music, CD’s, DVD’s, and entertain the hell outta me. I don’t care who he sleeps with. I know it’s a guy, us true fans get it, he’s gay. Anything else is fiction. It’s not Kris. It’s not Tommy. Anyone that thinks differently is nuts.

Fanfic scares me. Fan threats do too. I’m old enough to remember Lennon. The little girls and boys who threaten celebrities on twitter need to remember that if they did that at school they would be arrested. I see a time when twitter feeds will be monitored.

Good for Adam. Yeah for Tommy for having such a true friend. And, good for Sauli too. He’s got a helluva lovvah!

No need to put yourself through that. We don’t need to identify what exactly sets the whackadoodle off in order to make fun of said whackadoodle :).

I knew Kirsten would remember the details. I can always count on her! (Sorry it took me so long to say thanks, Kirsten. I was off having a life again. Well, I was at little league, so not much of a life, but I was being a responsible parent :) ).

  • musicality

I went over to twitter again and started reading some more of messages to and about him. I have to say it’s more interesting than that book I was reading. He has a lot of young girls in his fan base. Based on their pictures I would guess 13, 14,15 maybe 16 tops. A lot of them are having a meltdown of nuclear proportions over this Tommy/Sauli thing. I’m a bit behind on this as I don’t really follow any of the idols that strongly enough. But it appears some of them were mad at Tommy for getting in the way of Sauli and some of them were mad at Sauli for getting in the way of Tommy and some of them were mad at the ones above for getting mad. Better than a book.

WTF is wrong with Adam Lambert’s demented ‘glamberts’? What hopeless cows. Is there still a smidgen of hope that he’s ditch his sexuality and magically turn straight? Even if that were true, do these useless wastes of matter actually believe he’d be attracted to them?
They need to let the boy live his life. The only thing more disturbing about his wacko fan base is the fact that he gives a flying sh1t about what any of them thinks. Ignore them, Adam. You’ll NEVER meet these losers, so live your life.
(P.S. – this isn’t aimed at all of Lambert’s fans. Just the crazy ones)

Isn’t Tommy straight? Why can’t people get that through their thick skulls?

Funnily enough, after a Monte’s concert in LA, Tommy was hitting on a cute girl at the bar and she said ” But aren’t you the guy that Adam kisses in the concerts? You’re gay!” Several Adam’s fans were right there and actually defended Tommy to the girl saying “Oh no, he’s not. It’s just for show. Trust us. We’re huge Adam fans and Tommy is NOT gay.” That was so funny. :)

Girls that age are very emotional. At one of the concerts I attended, there were several very young teens behind us. Before the concert, they acted very calm, chatting and having a great time. When they heard the music, they started screaming their really high-pitch scream. When Adam appeared, they started crying, and a couple hysterically. Sobbing, and crying, “I love him so much!!!” Over and over and over. But I think that is typical for that age. Can you imagine a Bieber concert with 15K young tweens and teens?

  • lac123

I’m not really a fan of twitter. People can say whatever they want without repercussions. People spew hate at each other like no other. I remember when Adam retweeted someone who had called him the f word (and she was eventually band). When looking back at her tweet history, she had tweeted him for literally over a year like they were buddies. As time went on she would get angrier and angrier that he hadn’t returned her tweets and whatnot. It got to the point were she was tweeting him delusional, hateful things everyday. From a mental health perspective, it actually pretty interesting/alarming seeing the decline.

  • Moria Polonius

There were Kradam fans on twitter and on an ONTD community that were saying that Kris and Adam were together, that’s why the dog didn’t tweet goodbye to Kris when he came back to Los Angeles.

Eh, I can never take ONTD seriously. They consist of an exceptionally huge bunch of trolls who make shit up for kicks.

I just don’t understand this fan twitter stuff. Twitter is nice because peeps can get some real-time info from their fav and stay connected to him/her and their career. And if they have a question about something that affects his/her career they can ask and maybe get a reply.

But for fans to use twitter thinking they can chat with a celebrity or express opinions about his/her personal life is just so foreign to me. And then to have other peeps condemn a celebrity for expressing himself/herself when things get pretty nasty and insulting that is beyond weird to me. It’s like saying that celebrities are responsible for their fan outbursts and that celebrities should be graded on their fan interaction or un-action.

Sure Adam can choose to ignore fan outbursts (and he usually does) but he is also a gentleman who defends people he is close to. And I think that is a good thing, though it would be nice if life was a fairy tale and he didn’t have to do that because real-world people were considerate and nice and non-judgmental.

  • SpenserJ

Been there, done that. Survived thanks to my trusty ear plugs :).

I’m surprised the young girls refuse to believe that Tommy is straight. I would think it would be a relief to them to know that they now have a reason to dress slutty and try to get backstage at an Adam Lambert concert. Tommy likes chicks! Now’s your chance slutty groupies!

  • kradamour

Tess, what a lovely post. I can’t imagine anything to add to that. Except maybe “amen”.

I’m just perplexed by these girls’ priorities. Back in the day, if I’d have been a fanfic writer (which ew, no), I wouldn’t have been writing about the band getting it on. I would have been writing about me and Jon Bon Jovi in the back of my car.

Here they have a straight, single guy in Adam’s band, and they just don’t appreciate it. Shame on them.

LOL I think it’s so stupid of him to even bother with these sort of things though. surely he has better and more important things to focus on. But slash is the point of the fan fic. I’ve seen very little hetero sex written about any of the band members. From what I’ve encountered anyway.

It’s when some can’t separate the fiction from reality when it gets problematic.

ETA: Before anyone says fan fic is problematic to Idols, pick a tv show, movie or band and there’s fic. It’s everywhere.

  • http://www.planetfierce.proboards.com/ mamadeb

Been lurking for awhile, but I know a lot about fanfiction and the subset of it called slash, both as a writer and someone interested in the history of it. And I’ve been writing slash fanfiction for the last thirty or so years (Starsky and Hutch…), which is well before manga, whether shonen-ai or the more explicit yaoi ever hit these shores.

Slash fiction as a genre began with Star Trek, with the majority of the writers being adult women, mostly straight and mostly married. Because there has always been a number of women who find the idea of two men together to be very hot – just as some men like the idea of two women together. There’s been a lot of studies and such, but it doesn’t have to be any deeper than that.

It really didn’t do any meaningful branching out of fictional universes until the advent of the boy bands in the nineties, and got a big push with, believe or not, Lord of The Rings where people found writing about the actors more fun than writing about the characters. In fact, until that point, “real people” fiction was considered somewhat taboo.

Most fanfic writers are pretty clear that their stories, whether about fiction or “real” people, are just that. Fiction. Those of us who write real people (yeah, I’ve crossed that line) are mostly aware that the people we write about basically share a name and some physical characteristics with an actual person but are NOT that actual person. Those few who do not have problems besides writing fanfiction, in my opinion.

And, btw, there’s a whole lot of stories out there that have heterosexual relationships and a whole lot with no sex whatsoever. Slash is genre, not the whole thing.

I’m still wondering who is stauli??? Adam and Miley have some gorgeous blues!!

    Mamadeb: sounds ewwwww…. no offense.

  • Truthiness

I try to tell myself that every fandom has its share of crazies,

Indeed. Like how some people in Ottawa were freaking out at that harlot Carrie Underood! The Yoko Ono of hockey! Or that there are nutjobs that poison trees because they’re from a rival college team. Or hey, our team won some major sports event!! Let’s riot in the streets and detroy lots of crap! Or the socceer hooligans of the world. Or how a player was killed for his accidental goal on his own team.

So yeah, AI fans as crazy?…eh. As with anything that has a fair amount of fans, some percentage of them are nuts.

Good for Adam for at least addressing the craziness when it starts attacking his friends, like Tommy or Kris. Probably won’t accomplish anything, but good for him for speaking up.

No, I think it’s good that Adam does the “slap on the wrist” thing from time to time as the cray-cray are getting crazier by the day. I don’t even need to go to his @reply to read all the craziness to know they are really nutcases. As to whether there is has any effect to curb them from continuing is another thing as this is clearly out of his control. However, he has a right to let it be known that he does not tolerate this kind of nonsense. Also, I am really glad that he is always sticking up for his close friends and this shows his loyalty immensely.

He does. The OTT portion of the Glamberts can match Claymates in their heyday, and current Beiber and GaGa fans, for levels of sick overinvestment. Glamberts are smaller in numbers but right up there otherwise.

  • turquoisewaters

Call me old-fashioned but I think it’s just plain rude to send hateful tweets to Adam, Sauli, or Tommy, like some of these self-important “fans” have done. I think as a good fan you buy the music, show up to the concert, and maybe hang a poster on the wall. You can have any fantasies you like, just keep them inside your own head and remember they are just that – fantasies. But if you feel like you have any right to mess with your star’s personal life, you lost perspective and crossed into unhealthy stalker territory. – I see nothing wrong with Adam’s tweets. I like that he speaks his mind.

  • sf3456

SO TRUE..some people do need to get a life…some people know where he is every minute of every day…im not THAT cray-cray

I got to see Allison sing live tonight!!! I went to Monte Pittman’s concert and he brought her out for the encore. She did a killer cover of Madonna’s “Crazy for You”!! I didn’t take video, but lots of people did, so it should pop up on YT.

PS – Unless Adam was hiding, he wasn’t at the show. Tommy was there, playing bass (he was supposedly a little under the weather. I didn’t talk to any of them, but I did pass Tommy in the bar as I was leaving — surrounded by a few ladies :) ). The concert was really really good. You can forget what a great guitarist Monte is. His vocals are not great, but it was still a really fun gig.

  • cwm

    haha You go Adam!

I love the way Adam stood up for himself and those he cares about, and put the crazies in their place. And then ended with the sweet thank you to the rest of his fans. Perfectly executed.

I just do not get how a “fan” can actually think they have the right to tell a celebrity whom they should be with and how to live their personal life, and to spread hate if the celebrity’s love life doesn’t fulfill the fan’s fantasies. As a fan, I’m just happy for Adam that he’s happy, and my investment stops there.

  • lorismile

No offense but I really don’t feel all that sorry for her dad. He’s the one that signed her up for the show. My daughter did a little modeling in NYC and she was up for a part on a TV show but I didn’t pursue it because as her mother I didn’t feel it was the right move for her. Now that she’s an adult, she’s thanked me more times than I can count, even if at the time she was angry with me.

  • Moria Polonius

    I blame shonen-ai.

Nah. As said above, blame Star Trek.

Back on the topic: in the age of Twitter, internet, google and omnipresent paparazzi the fan stalking and fan entitlement issues are worse than ever. Adam’s right to express his displeasure with the situation: perhaps he’ll manage to educate his fans at least a little bit. Ignoring that sort of fan behaviour could only lead to its escalation.

  • Esqt

Like I said the other day when someone was divulging someone’s schedule, I was like, how do they find out this kind of information? Are they spending their days searching for this stuff?

Welcome to the world of information superhighway where you don’t need days to search stuff. Everything is just a click away!

Seriously, all you need to do is pay a visit to the OFFICIAL fansite where fans from all over the world just dump ANYthing they came across via twitter, blogosphere, TV, magazines, etc. OR in my case, visit some blog that has everything I need to know, Adam-related :)

Minus the official fan site, I don’t go there, but I do sometimes go to the unofficial sites. The interesting thing is that it often is not one person bringing all the info at one time. Its usually multiple people tying together bits of info to make a picture. Thats not much different than certain threads on this site.

    On Tuesday 22nd February 2011, @sebastianbach said:

I can’t believe it when so called “fans” go out of their way to say hurtful rotten bullshit to people that I care about , ONLY because I care about them. You know who you are. You are in no way a “fan” if you think that I do not deserve happiness in my life. There are no “home wreckers” in my life. My home has been “wrecked” since last April. I am fucking divorced. I did not date any girls at all until after the divorce papers were filed in a court of law. It shocks me when I find a modicum of happiness, only to be thwarted by people who say they like my music? How fucked up is that? The happier I am , the more music I can make. I have been going through complete misery since last April. You wanna be a true fan? Try saying something positive to someone who keeps me from being completely alone. That would be alot better than me trying to explain “not all my fans are assholes, I swear”.

So does that make Sebastian Bach fans the new “Claymates/ Glamberts”? Of course not – there is CRAY in EVERY fandom. Case closed.

  • musicality

Since Idol came on the air every fan base has had it’s loony tunes. If they haven’t then those idols are probably waiting tables somewhere at some dinner. It’s when these idols stop having overly invested fans that they need to worry. That’s a sign their career is dying and no one cares. The more cray the more popular. Look at Bieber fans. It’s always been this way. I talk to my grandmother and she tells me about how people acted around Elvis and the Beatles. I talk to my mom and she tells me about how people acted around the Jackson 5 and Michael Jackson in the 80s. It’s kind of amusing when people act like this is something new.

That Sebastian Bach guy sounds like he lost it. That’s when you have to distance yourself from your fans.

  • sr4mjc

Try saying something positive to someone who keeps me from being completely alone.

Good for him! (I always loved his voice..)

It’s tough to date and have a love life in the public eye. Carrie’s getting her hockey hate, etc. Gotta give them credit for trying their best to have a normal relationship with everyone watching.

  • Tess

That Sebastian Bach guy sounds like he lost it. That’s when you have to distance yourself from your fans.

Oh for heaven’s sake!! Why should “fans” get a pass and celebrities have to cow-tow to the old adage of “turn the other cheek”. Fans have been OTT for time immemorial..good God, people have been killed at concerts because fans adopt a group mentality and forget that there are boundaries in real life.

No artist should EVER, EVER, EVER be judged on who their fans are and no artist should have to ignore the insults and derrogatory comments that these pitiful people make. Fans are the worst kind of bullies mainly because they wrap their warped sense of “control and concern” in a blanket of phony caring and commitment.

And the worst part of this is that these crazies are often egged on by other fans and continually allowed to harass…and then stupid people in the real world have the gall to be as crass as the BSCrazies by condeming an artist for responding to inappropriate conduct by their fans.

Fuck…this world is pretty messed up!!

So this is all somehow related to a slash romance in the minds of some Adam cray crays. On one hand, I think its fine that Adam did the twitter thing. I think that’s the Tommy part of the tweets, but the part about his personal life is another. That some fans think they can tell celebs who isn’t or isn’t good enough for them, I think he’s just trying to put a stop to it before it gets worse. I don’t know if it will do any good, but I admire him for trying.

I don’t know Sauli, I just know Adam looks happy. So if he’s trying to make it work, go for it.

Well some of his fans ARE nuts apparently. The key word is “some”. And this is true of most celebrities as indicated in posts on this thread.
I expect any successful performer has his/her share of BSC fans. It comes with the territory & it’s far better than being ignored.

Oh yeah – and yay for Adam for speaking his mind. He did exactly the right thing imo.

I don’t want to turn this into a Miley thread, but this. If Billy Ray had actually been a parent instead of acting like Miley was the breadwinner of the family, allowing her to do whatever the hell she wanted, then maybe things would be a little different.

Seriously, all you need to do is pay a visit to the OFFICIAL fansite where fans from all over the world just dump ANYthing they came across via twitter, blogosphere, TV, magazines, etc. OR in my case, visit some blog that has everything I need to know, Adam-related

Okay, yeah, but to know when someone left town and why they did to when they came back? What are they doing? Stalking the airport?

They search Twitter for tweets that mention seeing the celebrity in various places.

This is why, at a show last year where I found myself sitting one person away from CeCe Peniston (she was there to see a performer she’d been encouraging and I think lives around here), I didn’t include this fact in my live tweets of the show until after she’d been invited to sing and introduced by name — at which point I assumed she had chosen to be noticed. Arizona gets a lot of visiting celebrities, and I figure they’re entitled to be left alone until and unless they break out in performances.

Ok, first, I have to say that Adam by no means is the only person with crazy fans, so whenever there is talk about how this just highlights the crazy “glamberts” I just have to roll my eyes and say “um, Bieber fans send DEATH THREATS to any girl he looks at.”

EVERY celeb has their pocket of crazy fans, it just comes with the territory. That crazy tends to come to the forefront online, because it’s a place where people can spew hateful, delusional and otherwise crazy things with complete anonymity and a lack of repurcussions. In that respect, twitter is hardly the only devil out there, because the kind of hate spread there can be found on message boards, fan sites, blogs, youtube comments, etc. It’s just out there and there’s nothing that can really be done about it.

Another thing, I’m glad Adam sent those tweets, though I’m sad he had to in the first place. My twitter feed of Adam fans is relatively sane, though I have to admit, even among some of my more sane friends, there were some crazy, strong feelings that came out of Adam’s relationship with Sauli. To the point where there was hatred coming from all sides (“fans” hating on Adam, on Tommy, on Sauli, just crazy stupid stuff).

Sure, the real crazies who perpetuated this kind of crap are not even going to pay attention to Adam’s words, but for some of the more “middle of the road fans” who were being negatively impacted by it, I think it did help put things back in perspective and get people to calm the eff down, lol.

Frankly, I’m wondering if Adam didn’t half realize he “created a monster” of sorts with the stage gay with Tommy. It was fun and entertaining, but it did build some pretty strong fantasies (especially since Tommy is such a natural on stage) that clearly got a little out of hand with some fans. I even wonder if Adam himself realized this toward the end of his tour. After the Amsterdam show, which featured the crazy long Tommy makeout session, Adam noticeably cut back on the stage gay. The shows were all still sexy as hell, but with very little Tommy interaction.

I think Adam is keen to how he’s being perceived by his fans, and tries to balance it out so that fans don’t take what they see on stage as “real life”. Of course, some do, anyways, but the majority get the point.

Ok, that was long, sorry. LOL. I do think Adam is very close to his friends and stage family, and wanted to reinforce that sense of family by reaching out to Tommy, rather than having his personal life get in the way of just putting on a good show with his friends, for his fans.

It’s when these idols stop having overly invested fans that they need to worry. That’s a sign their career is dying and no one cares. The more cray the more popular.

This. For every over-invested cray fan there are a few hundred of sane ones. I dunno, they seem like a barometer of the depth of fannish devotion. Adam’s fans have always appeared pretty devoted (which is a good thing) so no wonder a few basket cases emerge here and there. I think Adam knows it (like he said in many an interview, he had a chance to see from the side lines what fame looks like) and his defensive tweets are just his way of trying to keep the craziness to the minimum.

And the worst part of this is that these crazies are often egged on by other fans and continually allowed to harass…

Sure agree with this, especially the bolded text. It’s bad enough that the OTT fans not only indulge their lack of boundaries, but also the performer than takes grief for the OTT fan behavior to boot! Further, some OTT fans even go to such lengths as to pose as OTT fans for performers not to their liking to create media backlash. To all of it, I agree with Adam…get a life.

To be fair, I hear roughly this meme from music industry pundits. It always puzzles me, as when I look at the music buying habits of the more volatile members of the fandom in which I’m most active… I probably buy more music from a larger number and variety of artists than they do. Yet I’m told at every turn that my form of enthusiasm — buying and writing about the music — is less valuable to artists’ careers than being “involved” in the artist’s personal life.

The new music industry is very discouraging for old skool fans like me, who just get a kick out of hearing interesting noises.

  • Maura73

@eilonwy, fascination with celebrity personal lives is not new, tho social media intensifies it. All celebrities, including celebrity singers, have had to deal with it for a century or more.

Re limiting talk to the music: very few people have the musical knowledge for that discussion. If you limit the talk to music on fan sites, you’ve have limited it to almost nothing.

Results of Adam’s tweet rant: some of the cray are less delusional today. A few stopped being Adam fans. Many privated their accounts, which means they can no longer tweet nonsense at Adam.

Re slash: Lesbian sex is a male porn staple. There’s nothing shocking about women getting turned on by boy sex. The difference is that men limit lesbian sex to porn, while women occasionally go beyond it to politics.

That was so cool of Sebastian to do that. Maybe the out of control fans of both of them will get the message.

OMG. Now it’s Star Trek fanfiction? What? So we should all blame Shatner for being so hot and sexy as Captain Kirk for starting it all? What, didn’t Superman or Tarzan have fanfic?

    Geeez. I always loved Shatner!!

Anyway, I overall agree with the posts today. You can’t control crazy. It exists everywhere. You can’t expect function from dysfunction. There will always be crazy. I remember when Donny Osmond got married so young. I remember when David Cassidy did drugs and drank and got caught. So many fans so upset. The bottom line is that they are just human.

Adam is human. I just hope he is happy, finds love and can express his happiness through new music.

And, I remember a famous SNL routine where Shatner addressed a group of Trekkies, and told them to “get a life.” That skit made headlines. And, it is still replayed on “best of SNL” shows.

OMG. Now it’s Star Trek fanfiction? What? So we should all blame Shatner for being so hot and sexy as Captain Kirk for starting it all? What, didn’t Superman or Tarzan have fanfic?

I think it was the combination of Kirk and Spock that did it. Between Kirk’s passion and Spock’s cool, they were a couple straight out of Jane Austin. Speaking of which, people were probably writing fanfiction about Austin’s characters long before Star Trek came along. I’m sure that there was fanfic about Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson — what else would you call NIcholas Roeg’s books?

If Star Trek spawned slash fanfic (stories that feature existing characters in gay relationships), it also created the Mary Sue fanfic (where the author inserts herself or a proxy character into the story). But both practices probably started long before anyone thought to label it.

I find it stranger when people write fiction based on real, living people — just because that does feel intrusive. But is it worse than drawing a picture of a real person? Or writing a song about them? Or using them as characters in a play or movie? Is Oliver Stone’s W a piece of fanfic? Or The Doors movie?

What’s disturbing to me isn’t that people are inspired to fantasize and write, or draw, or make music. What’s disturbing is when the fantasy supercedes the reality. That’s when someone has to draw limits. Good for Adam for doing that.
