Oh dear gawd. I am sure I wasn’t supposed to fold over in hysterical laughter when I saw that photo.

I am sure I was supposed to think it was hawt and sexaaay. Nope. It is definitely the laughter thing.

  • IdolThoughts

I think it’s beautiful. It’s like Tim Burton’s version of the Tudors. I love Adam’s shoot…there’s something to appeal to everyone. My fave is the one where he has the silver glittery glove on and he’s standing kind of sideways. Gorg!

  • http://onlinepastrychef.wordpress.com/ onlinepastrychef

If he could have Just. Said. No. to the ostrich feather….

Otherwise, my eyes go straight to his–that stare can cut through all kinds of white noise. Except ostrich feathers.

  • snuffles

I LOOOOOOOVE that Adam is pushing boundaries. I wouldn’t classify this as a “sexy” photo. But I’m enjoying the “high concept art” aspect of it. Very inventive!

  • Mom in the Suburbs

I love how Adam looks in these “avante-garde” (sp.?) photos. I don’t think these are always meant to be sexy. It’s the artsy thing. There are some amazing pics from that photographer though. My favorite is the one were he’s shot looking down, slight profile, from the left side of his face, with his hand on his forehead.
http://glambert.lima-city.de/coppermine/displayimage.php?album=38&pos=9 Beautiful. These are probably my favorite shots of him ever, except from the R.S. shoot.

  • aa618892

I saw this and all the other pics from this shoot in one of the other threads. They are awesome and seriously hot! I am curious what they will be used for. Anybody know?

  • Squirrely

Theme of it is gorgeous. He is so photogenic. He will be in movies soon.

  • Pam

Hee Vada. It does have that factor doesn’t it. I have to say the photos are very nice but the red shoes, although nice, I’m not digging them with the outfit. lol

  • deez

For a second I thought Jonathan Rhys-Myers was doing a Showtime promo!!

(Adam would fit right in with the cast)

  • unique28v

I don’t think these aren’t always meant to be sexy. It’s the artsy thing.

Yes. You can tell they were going for an art/conceptual look. Besides, to me you can’t make someone sexy. They either are or they aren’t.

The other pictures on the link MJ provides are pretty good. I think they capture Adam well.

My favorite is the one were he’s shot looking down (profile) from the left side of his face. Beautiful.

That picture is my favorite too.

I am curious what they will be used for. Anybody know?

I could be mistaken, but I think they were taken for that necklace he designed for some charity.

I LOOOOOOOVE that Adam is pushing boundaries.

Well, Idol has definitely taught Adam how to have no boundaries.

And i think the pics rock.

  • jms

Absolutely gorgeous photo. Although I’d call it more steampunk than tudor. I think this is my fav photo of him yet, it doesn’t display him so much as a theme, the composition is amazing. Someone is incredibly creative. This is the type of thing that would make a great album cover. Too bad it wasn’t from that shoot. A wonderful piece of art. I can’t decide if I like the black and white or color version better though.

  • calimari

He will make a mint with an Adam Lambert 2010 photo calendar.

  • https://twitter.com/draddee Sunn

Love this look!! I really really do.

Love the feather hat, the Tie, the little bit tudor, little bit Sherwood forest influence in the pic. I’d love to see his portrait done in oils with that exact pose dress. The way the light reflects off the white tie and grabs your attention, making you doubt the period, and look again.

I love this pic. And the lighting is superb. The colour version of the pic has almost a vermeerish quality to the lighting.

  • Truthiness

As I said in the headlines thread, don’t like this picture. It’s too contrived to the point of silliness. It’s probably the hat. If they had done without the hat…so much better. I enjoy a lot of the other pictures from that spread, though not all or all parts of them.

And even as much as I have issues with this photograph, and I do, it’s still better than that Michelin monstrosity. At least Adam’s face (what you can see not covered by that stupid hat) is purty. So at least it clears that bar.

  • Squirrely

Someone is incredibly creative. This is the type of thing that would make a great album cover

    Definitely!

  • Chicagolaw

LOL, no wonder Adam’s photo shoots last 18 hours!

Not a big fan of the first picture; although I do get what they were going for. It might be the hat. The other pics are gorgeous.

  • sidewalkstory

Is the hat attached to the chair? It certainly looks like it would fall if it wasn’t.

  • Tess

I would hazard a guess that these photos are for Adam’s “book”. His publicist will use them to sell Adam for a hundred different things including fashion shoots and advertising. Celebrities don’t just “show up” in advertising campaigns or in fashion ads. These are paying gigs and the persons making the choice of who will wear their clothes, or advertise their product need photographic evidence that the person “auditioning” for the job can sell or market their product. Hence the OTT of the shoot.

  • https://twitter.com/draddee Sunn

The people who posted that this photo is concept art… I totally agree.

This picture has light, composition structure and perspective (not the hay in the background corner). It has a theme and it makes you think and question.

honestly, I can’t tell you how much I love those pic. The other pics are nice, and sexy and all that. But this, this is in a totally different league.

  • glamatheart

    Love. It. HBIC – indeed!

  • saga

    Mmmm, me likey very much.

Silliness is fun! I like that he doesn’t take himself too seriously.

  • http://www.wholisticbirthways.net austinmidwife

He must be in heaven. He gets to sing and dress up practically every day now. He keeps people talking about what’s he’s done and what’s he going to do next. These photos are seriously cool. Some are sexy, some are artsy; why not? He’s living his dream. We should all be so lucky and blessed.

  • https://twitter.com/pmhowden undercooked

The people who posted that this photo is concept art’ ¦ I totally agree.

This picture has light, composition structure and perspective (not the hay in the background corner). It has a theme and it makes you think and question.

Sunn – I love this pic too for all the same reasons. Also I agree with you Tess about this being for his book. I can see Adam doing modeling as well. He has the looks and the height.

  • Vada

I think the big disconnect for me, is that to really rock a frilly muskateer outfit, he needed a much more masculine makeup, preferably with 3 day stubble.

It was always the contrast in the muskateer look with the dude inside the frills, that made that look sexy.

Johnny Depp could have pulled that off much better, IMO.

  • Natasha

He looks like Henry VIII. All he needs now is six wives – or maybe not.

The other pictures in the link are amazing. I’m starting to get the idea that he gets a little carried away in these photoshoots.

  • Sveta

Unfortunately I don’t like any of those pictures. They are naive, trivial, IMO. Done in a bad, primitive taste. I don’t like his face expressions, so standard, predictable. That’s a shame because Adam Lambert’s face was so expressive, bright, witty or delightful on camera, had so many fresh, interesting, emotional moments. I respect and adore this singer and a person though. But there is no pushing boundaries here. See George Costanza modeling for Kramer in Sienfield series.

  • Squirrely

Johnny Depp could have pulled that off much better, IMO.

Yes he could have. Johnny Depp is on a whole different level – but Adam is not far behind.

  • bottleblonde

As someone that did fashion ads for a living, I think the poses are stiff and nothing new. The photos seem very editorial, not like a personal photo shoot. I wonder if this was more about the clothes or Adam?

Agreed. These are fantastic, imo. (And by “these” I mean the color and b&w versions. :-) ) Although I also really like the Adam pushing the envelope, breaking out of the box (etc) photo, for totally different reasons.

I could be mistaken, but I think they were taken for that necklace he designed for some charity.

Seems these are publicity shots commissioned by 19 Entertainment. Pennyroyal was allowed to use one for their charity necklace, and Adam’s other charity endeavor, donorschoose.org, uses the same photo with the 19 logo prominently displayed in the lower right corner.

    http://www.donorschoose.org/adamlambert

Hopefully 19 replaces the outdated photo of Adam on his official websites.

ETA: I love photography and mess around with it a bit as a hobby. I’m inclined to agree with Sunn & jms regarding the lighting and composition of the photo MJ posted, and the modern white tie gets your attention and makes you question the whole ensemble. Not my favorite of the shoot (not feeling the feather), but a fun and interesting shot.

  • http://myspace.com/susanatfox sumidol

OH mj – you pick the silliest one to put up, I was expecting more – but lord no – om goodness gracious Adam is a gorgeous man – he is the entire package. Amazing good looks and vocals all in one man. THANK YOU FOR THE PHOTOS MJ!!!

  • AndreaH

I believe 19 owns these photos and PennyRoyal was given one to use for their Adam promo. They appear to be PR photos.

    From here – post #78: http://idolforums.com/index.php?showtopic=623991&st=60

This is correct. When the original pennyroyal picture came out, we were determined to find the photographer and try to get a copy without all the “touch-ups”. We didn’t get very far. Pennyroyal told us that the picture was furnished to them by Adam’s management company – 19. That is where the search ended. Didn’t figure 19 would release ANYTHING.

The pic in the headline is definitely not my favorite of the bunch. And I prefer the color version of it. But, it’s kind of cool. Someone called it “Glam Tudor.” However, the other pics are very nice -if a little over-photoshopped. These pictures were taken pre-tour (dated June 27).

  • yeahyeahsure

Ooooh, the pics are pretty! It looks like a big budget photo shoot! Love it!

  • dflowers

My favorite is the one were he’s shot looking down, slight profile, from the left side of his face, with his hand on his forehead.

I agree. It’s my fav also. He looks kinda vunerable and lost. Just a very nice shot. The others are OK, I can see where it’s supposed to be artsy. But I wish he would smile. He has such a great smile/laugh. :smile1_ee:

  • xdahlia

Are we suppose to look at this seriously? I can’t help but giggle.

  • 123abc456

Sorry Adam fans I like him in the blue teeshirt, this photo is awful. Is he staring in the next Romeo and Juliet for the over costumed? The other pictures are better but I ask what the hell is he so pissed off about? hee But I remember when they chose this photo of David Cook for his website: http://www.davidcookofficial.com/sites/davidcook6/files/imagecache/preview/official_photos/DavidC3.jpg

I could not figure out who he was pissed at. Do these professional Photographers hate smiles? I don’t get it.

  • jericho

Ugh. Hell no! He’s average looking at best. Short – maybe around 5′ 9″. He makes a good effeminate pirate I’ll give you that.

  • Yss

See George Costanza modeling for Kramer in Sienfield series.

Oh sveta, you nailed it LOL :lol_tb:

I don’t like that pic either, I think the other photos are way better, he looks so dreamy…

  • LaurelG

The Tudor photo is not my favorite, but I LOVE the ones in the red shoes. Stunning.

  • Norcal2009

    Awww…Adam and his Royal Hotness.

Glad I figured out he was wearing a HAT in that pic. I kept looking at it thinking “what the freak did they do to his hair!” haha

I, like others, love the pic of him looking down. It’s amazing.

As for the red shoes…they kind of fit if we think of “put on your red shoes and dance the blues.” Works for me.

  • LucyN

OH mj - you pick the silliest one to put up

I imagine that was entirely the point, although I don’t agree at all that it’s silly. It’s glam, playful and fun, and I love the ‘steampunk’ description above because the steampunk sub-genre is so hot right now in spec fiction. Someone in Adam’s camp knows what they’re doing.

  • jms

I wonder if this was more about the clothes or Adam?

From the poses and the seriousness of Adam in all of them, I’m pretty sure it’s the clothes. I still love them even though they leave me hungry to see a bit more of his personality coming through.

  • BeckyMD

I like the red shoes photos better than this one.

I agree with previous poster that Adam must be very happy now singing and playing dress up.

  • fearbear

I love him. He’s not the hottest guy for me or anything, tbh, I think his looks are quite ordinary. But OMG, the fierceness… it just makes him extraordinary.

  • AA foreva

Where is Annie Liebowitz when you need her. Much prefer the natural look with Adam. The depth of his emotions calls for photos that express his inner self. These appear artistic but incongruent with how I see him. Hopefully that type of photo session will be in his future.

  • auntieaimee

I like the one with the white background the best. Not feeling the steampunk tudor one. He should have smirked to make it look like he was in on the joke.

  • jericho

I would absolutely love to see that! She’s amazing.

I am a photographer myself, that is what I do for a living so I also look at these pictures with photographer eyes & these are amazing. Everything about them is amazing… but mostly, its the subject that is amazing, haha
He’s so hot. How can one man be that perfect!????
    Beautiful!!

Adam Lambert is never, ever boring!!

  • PattyH

This one, without a doubt, says, “HBIC” to me! I love it!

  • twizzler

What I think is great about this photo especially is that despite the gigantic hat and layers upon layers of clothing, Adam is wearing the clothes and not the other way around. You still look at his face first before you look anywhere else. I think it’s a testament to his philosophy that all you need to pull something off is to want to wear it! Tyra would tell him not to lose the neck though. :wink_wp:

  • LucyN

This one, without a doubt, says, 'HBIC' to me! I love it!

    Perfect interpretation!

  • AllenTX

Adam Lambert is never, ever boring!!

ITA. And remember this is just beginning. sure Adam is going to enjoy this ride. He’s basically living his dream now, singing and playing dress up. He’s not the snotty, artsy-fartsy type.

  • dietcoke

What is so great about Adam is that he is not afraid to try anything. He isn’t ashamed of his pre-idol Zodiac and Burning Man OTT looks and he probably doesn’t care if some people think he is silly and ugly and crazy. I think that’s why the photog loves him. He is just cool with whatever they put on him.

  • jill16

Love, Love, Love all of these pictures! I could never pick a favorite one! His expression in the tudor picture is perfect. Having ones’ picture taken or painted was not an every day occurance back then, and it was taken very seriously. He could not be more gorgeous!

  • lisabeth7

OMG he’s so fierce, hot, sexy, and yummy! I just love him and the pics are gorgeous!

It has a 1600 flair to it..especially the collar. That’s why I don’t get the boots.. but the look he gives is defiantly of the dangerous Dandy come to town.. lol. Maybe the Pied Piper comes to lead all your woman from town…

  • olivian

I do love the spoiled French king (or Tudor king) look of this picture, but I think that Adam’s face should be more prominent. And overall, while I really like the interesting play with angular poses in this photoshoot, I wish they had used photoshop less liberally; they did that with Kris’s and Adam’s initial publicity shots too, and it just seems pointless when you already have really good-looking guys. However, I absolutely love the Bowie-esque profile shot and the one where his head is tilted down and he’s holding a hand to his face–those are lovely, and felt the most like Adam. He is extremely skilled at this.

I really want the Elle photoshoot of these guys. Like now. And I love the red shoes.

  • ejw89109

…lol….honestly…the first thing that popped into my head when I saw the “tudor-style” photo was the new Alice in Wonderland movie. It’s going to be one of those days…lol…

  • CindyM

he probably doesn’t care if some people think he is silly and ugly and crazy. I think that’s why the photog loves him. He is just cool with whatever they put on him.

Exactly, I mean Warwick Saint who has photographed so many celebrities said Adam was the coolest person he’d ever worked with, that will definitely help him in the future.

I love that he’s willing to try new looks, new poses, outrageous or not. He looks great in jeans and a t-shirt and he looks great all glammed up. Versatility, it is a gift that not everyone has. Especially this season of American Idol and I’m thrilled that Adam has it. I’m NEVER bored with him.

We’ve seen photos from Allison’s 19 shoot and now Adam’s. Has Kris done a photo shoot yet? We haven’t really heard anything, but for promotion purposes I imagine it should have been done by now.

  • jill16

Johnny Depp could have pulled that off much better, IMO

    ewwww, I don’t think so.

  • wiccagirl2009

I love these pics. They are great. Beautiful. Love the red shoes too. So OTT and so Adam. I hope to see more of Adam shoots in the future.

  • pchboys

As an ex-stylist I love the artistry of the photos. I especially love the audacity of the tudor shot. I agree Annie Lebowitz would be another level in the many of layers of this extraordinarily talented man. In time people, in time. I believe this is his first photo shoot outside the confines of the Idol machine. The styling is already light years ahead of anything we’ve seen on idol. Loving the gray blazer with chain vest and silk tie. The shoulder detailing on that jacket is incredible and very rock. I love that they put him in a rock star version of a “suit”. I, too, can’t wait for the stripped down, sepia-toned, au natural photo shoot. Steven Miesel would rock these shots! It will be fun to see the progression through out his career. His hair will change, his style will evolve and we are in for quite a treat!!!

  • BestAI

Adam is so photogenic (great bone structure) that he can pull off any type of artsy shots. I believe photogs are recognizing that. I can see that photo above in a museum.

Adam’ future is so bright in many areas.

  • lola

Love it or hate it, it’s going to make people talk. I like the picture because it reflects more of his artistic side. This shows his other side of versatility. He changes things up. He is definitely on a different league…maybe trying to slowly shed off that AI image.

  • sidewalkstory

“but I LOVE the ones in the red shoes. Stunning.”

The red shoes pic are my fav’s too. Now only if we could get just one smile.

  • spring2009

OMG – I LOVE this picture – THIS is what I was expecting on the cover shoot. It is gorgeous! Has anyone figured out when these were taken? And I can’t help but wonder if these were put out there to defuse a certain other not so flattering photo.

  • Sassycatz

Well, THIS will make me want to buy the music. Heh.

  • unique28v

Yeah, he might really be able to do it. I get the feeling he doesn’t take himself too seriously and that he is not afraid to give everyone a treat on his expense.

I think you are right. I remember during Adam’s Idolatry interview that he told Michael Slezak that he picked Play That Funky Music for that very reason. It was fun, and he didn’t want everyone to take him that seriously that night. He said everyone else was trying to be super serious and sing ballads. I’m paraphrasing, but the main point he was making is that he wanted people to feel good and have fun during his performance.

I think it will be easy for Adam to shake the AI image because no one thought he had it in the first place. How many people said Kris looked and/or acted like the AI winner moreso than Adam? I always though the guy next door vs the guyliner comparisons were OTT, but it seems like the majority bought into it. So when people see pictures like the above, I don’t think they will think AI, until they read the caption “AI Season 8 runner up”. lol That label is going to follow Adam forever. Its been like 8 years, and Kelly still gets the AI label!

  • Truthiness

Silliness is fun! I like that he doesn’t take himself too seriously.

But see from his expression, it is serious, too serious, and that’s the problem. That he means it, but it’s trying to hard, and so fails. So it’s not a good silliness, it’s contrived and falls flat, and yeah, kind of mockable for that. At least for me, but clearly MMV. Like I said, at least it’s still tons better than that Michelin picture and his face (what is not being overshadowed by that 5000 Hats of Bartholomew monstrosity) is pretteh.

I liked other shots from that photoshoot much better.

    Different strokes for different folks.

  • kijico3

haha, his expression reminds me of a little kid being made to sit still for a portrait, “but moooommmm, I don’t wanna!!!!” Love the other pics tho (can’t get past the freakin hat in this one) and my fave is the one in the shiny jacket, head down.. Man, his profile is breathtaking!

  • sidewalkstory

The thing I don’t like the most about these photos is the airbrushing of his skin. It’s not him. I’ve gotten so used to the bad skin that I don’t even notice it anymore. And they have taken away his uniqueness by airbrushing out the freckles on his lips.

  • YankeeFan08

The photos are stunning. Adam is so photogenic. He exudes personality and charisma even in photos. Love the ones with the red shoes.

  • CindyM

I imagine as he is sheding the AI image his fanbase will also change..should be intersting!

Adam shed the majority of his American Idol image the minute his Rolling Stone interview came out. Doesn’t seem to have hurt his fanbase any, in fact from concert response, it seems to have only helped. Adam not winning, I think was probably the best outcome for him. He doesn’t fit the “typical” AI image, so as soon as he can shed the “AI” label, the better. Even a lot of the concert reviews note his difference amongst the usual AI fare.

  • BestAI

I think Adam is a quick study in whatever he does. Paula mentioned that about him. When Kris said he could never be an actor because he couldn’t learn his cues very easily, I believe Adam is a natural in most art forms. I’m not saying he is a great actor (I don’t know yet), but he can learn the craft very easily.

  • AdoK

    123abc456 I’m sorry but I don’t see similarities.What’s your point ?

  • Tess

Once upon a time in Idolland Adam was asked what would his album be called…the answer: Chameleon.

That is exactly what Adam is and why he will be financially successful now that he has crossed the barrier from undiscovered talent to celebritism. And with that chameleon persona Adam will be able to do a lot besides just “sing”.

And yes he is very good at changing himself up from boy next door to way OTT outlandish…and he always seems to be comfortable. For me Adam’s greatest asset is the fact that he doesn’t take himself so damn serious. He knows that to many he is a “joke”, so he plays to that. To others he is sexiness personified, so he goes there too. Then he has those fans that see him as the ballad singing boy next door “Opie” so sometimes he chooses to accentuate that identity. Just like a great Actor (and yes, I’ll go the Johnny Depp route here) he knows that always changing it up and never being “ordinary” will be his claim to fame.

Every photoshoot, every candid photo, every soundbite will be slightly different. And just when we think we know the real Adam he will go off on another tangent and fool us again.

So kudos for a totally ridiculous pic (which I love). I expect by this time next year Adam will be a regular in high fashion mags as well as showing up in a few counter culture rags. And, I think people will be looking forward to them as much as they will for his songs and albums and tours.

  • sylverine

Absolutely gorgeous photo. Although I’d call it more steampunk than tudor. I think this is my fav photo of him yet, it doesn’t display him so much as a theme, the composition is amazing. Someone is incredibly creative. This is the type of thing that would make a great album cover. Too bad it wasn’t from that shoot. A wonderful piece of art.

Love the feather hat, the Tie, the little bit tudor, little bit Sherwood forest influence in the pic. I’d love to see his portrait done in oils with that exact pose dress. The way the light reflects off the white tie and grabs your attention, making you doubt the period, and look again.

The people who posted that this photo is concept art’ ¦ I totally agree.
This picture has light, composition structure and perspective (not the hay in the background corner). It has a theme and it makes you think and question.
honestly, I can’t tell you how much I love those pic. The other pics are nice, and sexy and all that. But this, this is in a totally different league.

YOU GUYS ROCK! I can’t tell you how excited these pics make me, especially this one! And I love it that so many of you get it – the steampunk thing and the conceptual art, the avant-garde etc. I’m breathless and joyful because I REALLY now start to believe that Adam and thank god it seems 19 Entertainment too will create an original and stunning image for him. He so deserves – and can pull off – high style. He has amazing vocals, superb male beauty, great charisma and a wonderful character – put all of THIS together with high art, savvy marketing and fashion-forward thinking and WOW this is going to to a wild ride!

Adam shed the majority of his American Idol image the minute his Rolling Stone interview came out. Doesn’t seem to have hurt his fanbase any

Sorry I don’t seeing it hurting his fan base just shifting, I think he will lose some but gain even more. But that is just my opinion… or maybe just wishful thinking.. I like edgy.. and I want more edgy..lol

I could not figure out who he was pissed at. Do these professional Photographers hate smiles? I don’t get it.

I don’t know what era the costume supposed to be, but I don’t think it’s a Tudor. I think Tudor era has more layers. But for what ever era this costume supposed to be, if you look at all the pictures from these eras (some hundred years ago), they didn’t smile. Even pictures of our great grandfathers, we wouldn’t see them smile.

  • BestAI

Adam shed the majority of his American Idol image the minute his Rolling Stone interview came out. Doesn’t seem to have hurt his fanbase any, in fact from concert response, it seems to have only helped. Adam not winning, I think was probably the best outcome for him. He doesn’t fit the ‘typical’ AI image, so as soon as he can shed the ‘AI’ label, the better. Even a lot of the concert reviews note his difference amongst the usual AI fare.

Wouldn’t you love to ask Gene Simmons: So what say you now?

  • 123abc456

I found some of the shots OTT and funny and it reminded my of Zoolander that is my point. YMMV

  • honowoowoo

Stunning young man! Beautiful person inside and out! This kid does it all! Bravo Adam!

  • Dr. Tracey

I think the pictures are brilliant, they are exactly what I expected from a photo shoot with Adam, I really like them.

  • CindyM

“Every photoshoot, every candid photo, every soundbite will be slightly different. And just when we think we know the real Adam he will go off on another tangent and fool us again.”

YES, THIS!!! I love that it’s always slightly different. Not only the above, but every singing performance is slightly different. There are always variations in the way he performs a song and that is one of the reasons I continue to watch every video from the concerts and we’re 28 or so concerts into this journey. He keeps me interested in seeing what he will change up next.

  • Susan M.

I think his looks are quite ordinary

God, please tell me what you consider extraordinary!! (*Baffled*)

I think the shots are awesome and I’ve said it before and we’ll say it again that the A-list photographers and designers are going to get their creativity ON because Adam is fearless and open to anything and so expect some wild shit. It’s going to happen and we’ll probably see thing far more crazy than the Jimmy Neutron Polar Suit.

    And Tess, what you said.

And I love Johnny Depp, but I think Adam pulls it off WAY better.

  • IGetCranked

He looks like the Frog Prince.

  • LindaT

“Where is Annie Liebowitz when you need her. Much prefer the natural look with Adam.”

Somehow I doubt that we are going to see a lot of, if any, “natural look” (no make-up, simple clothing)photos from Adam. I think the few “au natural” professional shots that we have seen of Adam were headshots for his acting/theatrical portfolio. Given the choice, I think he will indulge his love of “dressing up” and high fashion, at least in the short term. And given Adam’s apparent willingness to try/wear anything, I think photographers are going to take advantage of that. So my guess is we won’t be seeing any “natural” photos of Adam any time soon.

ETA: Also, I don’t think the “natural” look is consistent with the image he is trying to project, which is more of a rock/glam-rock-type persona.

  • BestAI

Adam is becoming bigger than life. The entertainment industry is loving him. I see why the judges kept telling him he is IT. Simon said Adam had the IT factor. Oprah asked what is the IT factor. He said in a room full of people, they look black and white. The IT person is in full color. (I paraphrased it.)

  • Vada

You have to choose at some point. Angry or lip pout? Pi**ed or lip pout. Of course, it IS contrived, but it shouldn’t look that way, IMO.

  • lola

“I imagine as he is sheding the AI image his fanbase will also change..should be intersting!”

    - It will be positive. You can see how his AI fans reacted in this blog. He needs to expand his fanbase to the non-Idol fans if he wants to stay long in the industry.

  • Natasha

But for what ever era this costume supposed to be, if you look at all the pictures from these eras (some hundred years ago), they didn’t smile. Even pictures of our great grandfathers, we wouldn’t see them smile.

That’s true. They never smiled, not in pictures or portraits. Maybe because dental science wasn’t where it is today?

Unlike the glittery spacesuit picture I actually like this one. Adam is theatrical so in a way it suits him.

I think that Adam fully intends to make his mark by being different and OTT. To stand out from the current crowd of pop stars, he is going to market himself in a new way that people will call strange, wild, raw, sexy, weird, and end up with WTF is he doing? That is why Adam will overcome the AI stigma and hopefully.hopefully.hopefully will NOT be referred to in the future as “former Idol blah blah Adam Lambert.” The beginning was RS and the above pic is just one more wild and strange marketing move.

    Loved. all. pics.

The best ad is the one that stops people in their tracks and gets them talking. Doesn’t matter whether if it’s a beer commercial, an Album cover, fashion in-folds or movie billboards. Doesn’t matter if you love it or hate it, it got a reaction and that’s the whole point.
If they get you talking, then they’ve imprinted themselves on you, and you will remember them.

3 pages so far discussing a single picture.
I say it’s brilliant, and has exactly the kind of effect he should aim for in an album cover.

WORD! Especially the BOLDED part! I expect even crazier shit to come in the future. And I, for one, CAN’T WAIT!!

I remember when I first heard about Adam and saw some of his pre-Idol stuff (like the Zodiac Show). I remember thinking, if Adam just brings 1/10th of that wild creativity to AI that we’d be in for one hell of a ride!

And MAN, Adam has not only met my expectations he’s exceeded them by LEAPS and BOUNDS! And I’m THRILLED!! Seriously, I’m like a kid in a candy store. I can’t get enough of this wild, wonderfully weird, inhumanly talented and DELICIOUS man!!

I posted this in TWOP but thought I’d re-post here:

When I first saw the pic, I did not immediately love it, one of those WTH just happened pics. But the more I looked at it the more I appreciated the amount of detail that went into the composition. The clothes are a mismash of things from many eras: Elizabethan, Goth, Business Man, Barn Boy, I don’t know… Every time I look at the pic I notice something different. I prefer the B/W version because the details are harder to see so it makes you wanna stare at it again and again to see what you missed out.
Actually someone pointed it out correctly in another site, he looks like puss in boots here, or he could give Johnny Depp a run for his money as the Mat Hatter. The expression on his face is very appropriate, a disgruntled puss in boots who did not want to be on that photo, I think that’s hilarious and I love it.

ETA: Edited because I originally thought the colour version was a manip, and apparently it’s legit(?)

  • Squirrely

Sunn, everything you said and then some.

Love him or hate him people will stop stare and discuss.

  • SarahP

Thank you again terraj, I can now rest my weary brain.

  • Norcal2009

I was an mjsbigblog virgin this season. I humbly went about my life without all the latest updates of such wonderful things like this photo shoot. I had no idea what I was missing. NOW? I’m following it on twitter. I can’t help myself. I take my blackberry with me to the restroom when I’m with clients so I can take a few minutes and read some of the blogs. I probably need to seek therapy, but I don’t want to. LOL

Have other contestants from previous years garnered this much attention or so many comments? Or is it just ADAM?

I’m left to wonder if I’ll ever get back the life I had before Adam and MJSBIGBLOG….hmmmm

My first reaction was my normal reaction to most things “Adam” – sort of a shocked uncomfortability; he challenges my core way of thinking. I usually have to look at new Adam pics and videos more than once to get past the whole looking into the sun thing. THEN I can notice, beyond his face, the whole FM hand vibe he’s got goin’ on there, and then it sinks in that it’s not ridiculous, it’s Adam.

I love this jacket with its two different halves. I love the way the red jacket lining picks up the red color of the shoes. I love the tuxedo lapel, the chains, the eyebrows, the hair and the silhouette (I know black is slimming but he looks seriously lean here). Mostly, I love the fact that his overall coloring, black hair and pale skin, meshes so well with the black outfit and background that the pix almost looks like a black and white photo that has been colorized to make the red shoes and red lining pop.

And this is not even my favorite shot.

The thing I love about this photo is that despite the mountain of frou-frou, Adam’s strong features just pull me in. He is honestly just so breathtaking. And I don’t think he’s trying too hard to be sexy or pissed or whatever. I see it as “yeah, that’s right, bitches, i’m wearing an ostrich feather hat and ruffles. That’s true. They never smiled, not in pictures or portraits. Maybe because dental science wasn’t where it is today?

The way it was explained to me by my elders who lived very long lives, is that they were told not to smile. Photographs, especially sittings, were rare and often expensive and subjects were supposed to look like they took the occasion to pose seriously.
Moreover, having fun and/or goofing off was a commodity that many could not afford and was done in the privacy of their own homes where no one could look down on them for “wasting” their time.

  • LaurelG

I love wild shit, and that is why following Adam is so much fun. He is fearless, and doesn’t take himself so seriously. I love these pictures some more than others but all of them are just really interesting, like Adam. I think he has so much talent in so many areas that he is going to continue to make people talk, piss some off, make some laugh, make some have Adamgasms, whateva. He’s the most fascinating person to come off this show since Kelly. Lots of layers, thoughts, talents. He’s unedited, unabashed, and unusual, and uninhibited. Gushing alert:

I think Adam is so great because he’s NOT perfect. But what I love most is his strong belief in himself and it makes me believe in him and I hope for so much for him. I think I may be a fan for life.

  • oceana

The picture doesn’t work for me, he looks too bundled up, like he can barely move, and the frown seems unpleasant, he looks angry. It makes him look short and stocky, which he’s not.

Sometimes I think Adam is handsome and other times he does seem kind of ordinary. Often I can see his father in him, and I am reminded that his black hair is dyed and he’s really probably a blonde, like his dad, and it always makes me see him in a different light. Sometimes he talks and sounds kind of slick or glib and it makes me again think of his dad, who’s a dj I think.

Adam works his magic for me on tv when he creates a spell but to see him always with these costumes, and fake hair color, outlandish hairstyles, heavy makeup, nail polish etc., it starts to seem kind of tawdry, like a circus performer. I mean, does he ever take it off and show his real self? I guess I’ve always been into the natural look, that’s probably why I like someone like David Cook, I’m not into glam obviously. It was fun on the show but then it gets old after awhile. For me.

  • mar

As a photographer, I appreciate the elaborate production values, the fabulous lighting, and the top-tier styling. However, the expression and poses, as someone commented earlier, look quite stiff and standard (kind of stale, IMO). We know Adam is gorgeous and expressive, so I’m a bit underwhelmed.

Maybe its the downside of having such high expectations for him, darnit…!!!

  • lucy

I love the cavalier hat picture. So fun and funny and silly and beautiful at the same time. Perfect expression, too. Very HBIC even as he’s the total chameleon, wearing a ruffed collar on top of a white necktie. I can picture him raiding the photographer’s closet, donning all those disparate clothes and then settling himself down into the chair with that “So there!” look on his face.

  • Chicagolaw

As Adam said at the end of his Slezak Idolatry, “I’m kind of ridiculous.” He knows what he is doing, and he understands that some people aren’t going to get it. And he is totally ok with that.

Adam does nothing small-scale, and somehow he is able to pull it off. Like it or hate it, he must be having a blast with the elaborate shoots.

Edited to respond to oceana—there are lots of pictures/video out there of “natural” Adam without all the makeup and costumes. I have spent far too much time looking at all things Adam, lol. I really love his natural look.

  • fearbear

God, please tell me what you consider extraordinary!! (*Baffled*)

Umm… Johnny Depp, Gaspard Ulliel, Gael Garcia Bernal, Henry Cavill, Gabriel Aubry? I dunno, Adam just doesn’t strike me as the ultimate classically goodlooking guy, I think when he’s not made up, he looks quite ordinary. But as I said, it’s his fierceness, the things he does with his fashion, makeup and most importantly, his talent – that makes him extraordinary for me.

  • gingerly

He’s a beautiful person but this is fugly. I really see nothing else. He could have made it ridiculously amazing with any expression other than the pout, but even Adam isn’t perfect.

  • Miss Chaos

150 comments on one picture of Adam, 4 comments on Daughtry video, I donno what to think. Love the photos of Adam in the red shoes, the white background one is amazing, and he looks so skinny in that one.

  • jack5791

    This is strange.

  • canuck

I dunno… kind of looks pompous. Is this what he wants to come across as?

  • KLI

Even though the constituent parts have a Tudor look, this photo must have also been inspired by the Dutch painters of the 16th century–in particular Jan Vermeer. The interplay with light and dark maps perfectly with this wildly inspired photo.

My first reaction? WTF? Then, after shaking my head I started looking at it again and loved it. The pouty prince! Most excellent. Did somebody post the color version within this thread? I saw it on TWOP, but don’t yet see a link here.

  • glamatheart

He’s a beautiful person but this is fugly. I really see nothing else.

That was my reaction to the Michellin-man shoot. Horrific and I couldn’t even comment on it. Some things are better left unsaid. But I LOVE this one. LOVE IT. Well, the good news is, you know there will be a lot more photo shoots coming. Something for every Adam fan, I’m sure.

Even for this one outfit, I’d like to see the other photos in the series. I mean they didn’t spend 5 hours getting him into that getup (had to take that long, right?) for 1 shot. I bet there are lots of poses, some smiling, standing etc… again, probably something for everyone.

  • http://kristentheyellowlab.blogspot.com/ Zsus

“He could have made it ridiculously amazing with any expression other than the pout, but even Adam isn’t perfect.”

Well, see, that’s the photographer’s call. Not Adam’s. I think it works. But, I’d love to see some of the other poses of Adam in that costume.

So, I had to google “steampunk” because I’m so uncool. I guess that’s what that is. I’m kind of leaning towards “Glamsketeer.”

  • Chrissy

I agree with whoever said it’s Adam’s “fierceness” that always captures attention. I look at this picture, and I just love that he even did it. I don’t care if he looks contrived or angry-to me, he’s just embracing the spirit of trying something different. And I love that.

Now, some of those other pics…now those are kind of hot. :) Much better than the michelin man pic!!

I’m wondering where Allison’s photoshoot pictures are. I bet they will be fun!

  • Chipmunk

So, aside from that fuckingly ridiculous thingy on his head, it’s a great pic.And everything else in that photoshoot was awesome as well.

I doubt they are recent. In the thread at ONTD-AI, they’ve detected that these were taken as far back as June or so……just what I read anyways, can’t confirm

Still a mystery as to what they’re for

  • Tess

I mean, does he ever take it off and show his real self? I guess I’ve always been into the natural look, that’s probably why I like someone like David Cook, I’m not into glam obviously. It was fun on the show but then it gets old after awhile. For me.

We’ve all seen pictures of the “real” Adam Lambert. Too thick and somewhat wavy strawberry blond hair, extremely fair and freckled skin w/ large pores and some old acne scars, brilliant blue eyes , a saggy chin and somewhat puffy cheeks, beautiful white straight teeth, “feminine” lips, and a gorgeous nose (which I think is god-given but others disagree) and very fair eyebrows that tend to disappear.

All put together Adam is nice-looking but by all measures pretty ordinary looking. But, like many before him, (including Elvis who always died his hair black from day one) Adam took stock of his best and worst and decided to go for the gusto like most women do and a few brave men. I personally think it was and is a pretty gutsy thing to do. Why not take advantage of the good and down play the not so. Life is too short to be stuck with the stuff we are god-given…given half a chance most of us up the anti on our own.

And speaking of DC…I wouldn’t feel at all bad if he did something with the hair..though I don’t think that noggin could sport a Daughtry.

  • Sherena

First impression… the aura this picture gives me is very *solid*(can’t explain it better than that). Adam looks less lanky than he does in the other Sebree pics.

I can’t decide whether I like his facial expression. Sullen Adam may be sexy and may be a bit frightening. I think I’m confused because I’ve never seen him with that expression before. I wish they didn’t photoshop his face so much. Bad skin/freckles are so Adam.

That said, I love the whole setup and outfit for this. It’s extremely cohesive and beautiful. It feels more artistic and less cheap than the other pics from this shoot. Some people don’t like the feather but I love it.

  • mitchellvii

I like many of the pics from this shoot; however, not a fan of this one. Adam has kind of a constipated look on his face.

  • Squirrely

though I don’t think that noggin could sport a Daughtry

I can’t even imagine it – I’m surprised it looks good on Daughtry.

  • mitchellvii

I agree that Adam doesn’t do the ‘pout’ look well. His best look is the intent stare. He does intensity real well.

  • mischa

Adam has mentioned that he is fond of a British designer, Gareth Pugh. This photo shoot definitely has elements of Pugh’s style.

‘He could have made it ridiculously amazing with any expression other than the pout, but even Adam isn’t perfect.’

Well, see, that’s the photographer’s call. Not Adam’s. I think it works. But, I’d love to see some of the other poses of Adam in that costume.

I kinda like the pissed off look. This is how Henry VIII probably wanted to pose if he could have. I am the King. And you are not. So sit down and shut up.

So, aside from that fuckingly ridiculous thingy on his head, it’s a great pic.And everything else in that photoshoot was awesome as well.

Heh. I thought it looked like he had a black poodle on his head but it balances out the shot. Isn’t it feathers? We all know Adam likes feathers.

  • star

I wonder what the story is with this photo, because it’s not very representative of the shoot as a whole. It’s less fashionista, more costumey.

    This one’s my favorite!

  • BestAI

a gorgeous nose (which I think is god-given but others disagree)

I don’t get what you mean?

  • LucyN

This is all about branding, people, think about it. The mixture of the old, current and futuristic in these images is exactly the way Adam describes his sound. They are moving fast to brand him and are sparing no expensive in the process. This is so friggin’ exciting I can hardly stand it.

  • gingerly

Excuse me for even commenting on this thread because I truly don’t care enough about Adam Lambert to look at Pugh or the Dutch painters in relation to him, nor did I see the Michellin man shoot. I just thought this was a really ugly picture (only my opinion)…so, umm, ignore me, because I really don’t care about the man other than commenting on the first picture I see.

  • BestAI

I can’t even imagine it – I’m surprised it looks good on Daughtry.

Just my opinion, but I don’t find Daughtry good-looking one bit.

  • lavender1960

I agree with you star, to me that photo is the most vulnerable shot of AL

  • Sherena

This is all about branding, people, think about it. The mixture of the old, current and futuristic in these images is exactly the way Adam describes his sound.

Oh my gosh… I didn’t think about it that way, but now I am. That is such an extra layer of awesome.

I kinda like the pissed off look. This is how Henry VIII probably wanted to pose if he could have. I am the King. And you are not. So sit down and shut up.

    lol

Also, reiterating that I flove the feathers. I may be the only one ;)

    Effin’ ridiculous. (read: insanely bad)

  • Teri63

OMG, I think this picture is AWESOME! It’s so Adam — OTT in a really fun, artistic way. At first I didn’t like the thingy on his head (Did someone say they’re feathers? I’m having a difficult time diciphering exactly what it is I’m seeing). After reopening the pic countless times, though, the head embellishment has kind of grown on me in that it lends to the overall ambience of the pic. The way it’s tilted kind of gives him a little extra attitude, I think. The guy could be a model; Even my husband, who is sick to death of hearing about Adam Lambert, commented this morning when I showed this to him that he’s one of the most photogenic people he’s seen.

  • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EJz1YMAu_x0 GeminiDolly

Hate, hate, hate, the headline picture. But the rest with the red shoes and the purple pants and the black suit-HAAWWWWT!!!!

  • Tess

a gorgeous nose (which I think is god-given but others disagree)

I don’t get what you mean?

There are some who believe that Adam has had his nose reconstructed at some point in time.

  • CaliforniaGirl

I agree with others that there is a certain “stiffness” to Adam’s expression and body…a very different vibe than say, his RS work, which I loved.

For some reason, I don’t feel his charisma in most of these photos. There is a sense of being too serious or contrived…I don’t think the photographer did a good job of capturing Adam’s essence.

  • wand3rful

There are some who believe that Adam has had his nose reconstructed at some point in time.

yeah, never really thought about it (who really does!? LOL) but his nose is quite different than his parents and brother….IF it has been altered, great job w. his bridge, refined but not too slim.

BTW, I love the main photo MJ selected to head this thread…I like the carefree, FU attitude he’s giving the camera. I am not a fan of the shots which have him giving “vogue hands”….its a bit too prima donna.

  • olivian

God, please tell me what you consider extraordinary!! (*Baffled*)

Umm’ ¦ Johnny Depp, Gaspard Ulliel, Gael Garcia Bernal, Henry Cavill, Gabriel Aubry? I dunno, Adam just doesn’t strike me as the ultimate classically goodlooking guy

I don’t think there needs to be any bafflement when someone doesn’t find someone else handsome. One of my friends normally has excellent taste in men, but for the life of me I cannot convince her that Johnny Depp is good-looking.

I do personally think that Adam is absolutely gorgeous, and I think he’s possibly even more gorgeous without makeup just because it really puts the focus on his features–eyes, nose, lips, bone structure, everything is really beautiful. So, I think he’s very handsome, as do a lot of others (he and Kris made such an aesthetically pleasing top 2, it was ridiculous) but not everyone will. If there are people who don’t find Johnny Depp and Angelina Jolie attractive, then no one can hope for universal attractiveness. :)

  • Mtlfan

love the artistry of this picture (except the metal sleeve). The expression is good but slighty a bit too pouty. Less would have been more

  • Tess

On second thought, I know his schedule has been non-stop crazy, with no days off, and it could simply be a case of fatigue finally catching up with him.

Considering these were taken after AI and before the tour I would think that Adam is pretty rested here. I also do not think that these photos are publicity pictures for Adam (the kind sent out to accompany articles or interviews).

These are obviously very staged portfolio pictures. They aren’t supposed to represent Adam the man and entertainer…they are representative of Adam the model and advertising pitchman. His personality isn’t supposed to show…the clothes are. That is what a good high fashion model does…looses themselves to show off the goods.

  • glamatheart

I have seen that debate about Adam’s nose and I can see no difference from his early pictures as a boy to his high school pictures to these photos today. His nose looks exactly the same to me.

I think it was a reaction by some at seeing his high school pictures where he is blond and heavier. It was an ‘OMG he looks so different, did he have a nose job?’ type of thing? that faded quickly. No nose-gate, thank goodness!

  • alaadam

Wow! Thanks MJ for the Adam pics. I like the headliner pic for the whole tudor OTT thingy but, yeah, my favorite is the one with his head down that “Star” had a link for. I luuuuuuuuvvvv the ones with the red shoes too. Well, just about ANYTHING Lambert is exciting. He keeps people talking.

When will we see pics of Kris and a photo shoot?

  • Teri63

I agree’ ¦there is a certain ‘stiffness’ to Adam’s expression and body’ ¦a very different vibe than say, his RS work, which I loved.

It is different than some of the pics we’ve previously seen of him, but I think that’s part of what I’m loving. While Adam’s more natural self may not be captured in this shot, his theatrical side comes forging through. I love how he seems to look good no matter what (that bizarre alleged album cover shot being a definite exception, IMO).

  • luvadamlambert

I love them all especially this one. sherena I love the feathers too LOL. This is sooo Adam. And I’m lovin every minute of it.

I have seen that debate about Adam’s nose and I can see no difference from his early pictures as a boy and in high school and today. His nose looks exactly the same to me.

And interestingly, from some angles his nose doesn’t look good at all…case in point, the terrible picture they continue to leave up as his “logo” on the official site. So I do think it’s his natural nose, otherwise it would look perfect in nearly every shot. And from most angles, it *is* quite lovely.

  • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EJz1YMAu_x0 GeminiDolly

Was the headline picture also taken around the same time as the others (June) or recent?

If Adam did get a nose job, very nicely done doc.

  • Truthiness

I mean, does he ever take it off and show his real self? I guess I’ve always been into the natural look, that’s probably why I like someone like David Cook,

Because David never colours his hair, does styles to hide things (*coughcombovercough*) and never wears make-up (like eyeliner). Yes, I see. Sorry, that just caught my eye, and I like DC as well, btw.

I keep trying, but still not liking that pic and why couldn’t mj have chosen the one where he’s wearing that vinyl jacket? *pouts* the pretteh of that one is much nicer to see when looking at this page.

Oh and that hat(e) it looks like the 500th hat http://www.valhallacards.com/images/RH-9780394844848-Lg.jpg on Bartholomew Cubbins. Wish I find a picture of that one.

  • ptslittlecomment

I love this photo. I think it is very artistic and draws you into the subject. Loved what someone above said about mixing different time periods, styles and influences. That is Adam!

Also appreciate what another poster said about Adam always making you rethink about how you view things. He certainly challenges his audience and I like that about him too.

There are many shots in the photoshoot that I find attractive and perhaps more commerical than the regal photo. But I don’t think there is a bad shot in the bunch.

The more I think about it, seems like you’ve nailed it, Tess. Not regular PR shots. Although one or two are being used for the charity items as already noted, the others are much more oriented around the clothing/props than Adam’s expression. And I would *love* for him to professionally model in addition to the singing. I’d never get tired of seeing him in any number of OTT poses and outfits.

I agree with the poster who said it had a touch of Vermeer about it, I said as much in my first post in this thread. It’s the lighting. The way the light is focused on the face and the tie. The darkness, the texture of the shadows and Adam’s expression borrows off Rembrandt. The pyramid composition of the subject (Adam) is classic Raphaelite, hence the feather hat. Remove it and you lose an essential part of the structure.

4 pages! This pic does it’s marketing job beautifully.

For me.”

I actually like the fact that Adam is playing around with his look and trying a lot of different things. Adam has said in interviews that he likes clothes that are different; he likes to stand out and not just blend into the crowd. I am totally on board with that. I guess I’m tired of seeing all of these singers/musicians who look like they just rolled out of bed — tee-shirts, jeans, plaid shirts, etc. The “I’m too cool to care what I look like” look, which is at this point is just boring. These guys are supposed to be artists, don’t they have any sense of individuality? I’m not saying that they should put on feathers, but a little personal style never hurt anyone.

Bottom line for me is even if some of the stuff Adam wears is a bit ridiculous, I like that he is trying to inject some style, fashion and fun into his clothing choices. His sense of style may not appeal to everyone, but it is never boring. :)

  • Tony

Adam looks fat in this picture (in his face). The hideous outfit isn’t exactly flattering, either.

  • Q3

Love it! And yes, it really does remind me of Vermeer.

Perhaps were will see some more goth-tudor shots from The Castle photo session.

Yup. I agree. People tried to get Streisand to get a nose job for years. lol

Anyways, I don’t even know how Adam would have been able to afford a nose job. His mom and dad have said in plenty of interviews that they are happy they won’t have to send him grocerty store gift cards anymore. lol

I wonder how many photoshoots Adam has had? So far, we’ve seen these and the rollingstone shoot, which also produced really good pictures.

I guess I’m tired of seeing all of these singers/musicians who look like they just rolled out of bed ‘” tee-shirts, jeans, plaid shirts, etc. The ‘I’m too cool to care what I look like’ look, which is at this point is just boring. I agree. Its weird because the United States is supposed to be the land of individuality, but you’re practically ostracized if you express yourself differently and don’t “comform”. If Adam is going to dye his hair at least its black. I swear if I see one more fake blonde…….. lol Besides, the dark hair contrasts nicely with his pale skin and bright blue eyes. My opinion of course.

The other pictures are great. They’re sexy and luscious and rich, but they’re just not what I expect from an album cover.
In an album cover I want art, something to make me stand and pay attention.
Something that’ll make me reach for that CD because it looks different. A picture that I can study while I’m listening to the songs, and wonder what it all means.
Not just a pretty picture of the artist. Not just sexy and trendy. I want fascinating and artistic and curious.

To me, this picture is as close to art as I have seen from an Idol photo yet.

I kind of think that’s exactly the point, really. That’s why Adam’s expression just caps it off for me. It’s cool. But it’s also ridiculous. I’m sure it’s meant to be funny, while also giving off a sumptuous vibe.

Umm, ahh, ya. We have seen him in jeans and t-shirts most of the time. I love Adam’s natural look and I get to see that quite a bit. As long as he is not running around or going to Starbucks in that costume, I am ok with it.

I think DC could have used a brush or something during the GMA concert cause his hair was kinda messy. Kris is casual and natural but more neat, IMO.

  • VegasGirl

I don’t think Adam’s had is nose done. You can creative illusion with make-up and shading. An example of this is Rock Week; look at Adam’s nose when he’s with Slash and with no make-up. And then look at his nose on performance night with full make-up, their two completely different noses a couple of day apart.

  • yinyang

Hmmmm, 217 responses about a photo so far, and only 117 in the headlines thread, which included some posts about the photo. Whether you love or hate the photo, it’s doing a great job of attracting attention, and getting people talking, so it’s a very successful photo.

IMO, getting rid of the “hat” would make it better, but it certainly does attract attention!

‘Fat’ and ‘Adam’ doesn’t go in the same sentence & I’m tired of people saying that. Seriously get a life’ ¦ 6′ ²1 or 6′ ²2 & 185 pounds is hardly ‘fat’ . This is why so many people have eating disorders because of the stupid ridiculous idea of ‘fat’ these days.

@olivian, (loved your post on Ross’ recap, btw. Had to leave for work so couldn’t comment.) Believe me, I totally get what you mean about the subjectivity of attractiveness. Totally true. What I couldn’t wrap my brain around was the “ordinary,” which is not the same thing. For reasons which we’ve all commented on for five pages, Adam is anyting but ordinary, IMO. You described exactly while I feel he is exceptionally attractive (sorry, I can’t quote on my phone).

It would have made more sense to me for someone to say they didn’t find him at all attractive then ordinary. I don’t find Danny particularly attractive, but I don’t I’d ever call him ordinary.

Yes.. women and gay men are objectified 10x more than straight men. I have a lot of conflicting positive and negative feelings about that…

I’m 99% sure Adam hasn’t gotten a nose job, because 1) it would alter his voice and 2) he couldn’t afford it.

My favorite of these pics is the sideview of Adam in black and his hand placed daintily on his forehead. But IA with Sunn that this one is art and the closest to what I’d want on his album cover.

There is no indication that any of these photos is intended to be an album cover. There are several reports that they were done at the request of 19E not RCA, so that sound more like a PR photo session. The only one that I’ve seen in use is the cropped headshot used on the pennyroyal site and they said they got that from 19.

But these set of photos really doesn’t look like PR presskit photos to me. There are no headshots in what we’ve seen.

Has anyone determined when these were shot?

Th stylist for this photo is Marina Toybina who owns the House of GLAZA (GLAZA clothing). She has designed some costumes for theater as well as clothing for music videos, album covers, movies, etc. She’s also worked with Skingraft on some photo shoots. She refers to her clothing as “wearable art”.

This article with photos is from 2006:
    http://www.lasplash.com/publish/cat_index_Style_and_Fashion_Los_Angeles_Events/Glaza_2006_Collection_A_Couture_Resurrection.php

Since the start of Glaza in 2002, Toybina and ex-partner Ashton Hirota have ‘stood by the art of fashion,’ designing for the sake of art rather than red carpets. As a result, Glaza has continually presented timeless, pseudo-gothic couture pieces that have, ironically, attracted celebrity after celebrity.

    Her Bio: http://www.modelmayhem.com/818444

Glaza is a highly reputable and exclusive, couture clothing line based out of Los Angeles. The “wearable art” is specifically designed for private clients and reputable fashionistas. It is the value of the artistic evolution in each piece that ventures Glaza into an isolated category within the fashion industry; catering to the needs of individuality and timeless beauty.

I do design custom pieces for the right clients and projects…including:photo shoots, music videos, commercials, movies and especially high end/international editorials.

Regarding Adam’s nose ‘” he’s had the same nose since High School. Also same chin and cheekbones. Here’s a link to side by side photos:

Actually, I think he looks more like his dad. I still contend, why would he want to enlarge his nose?

I don’t think Adam’s had is nose done. You can creative illusion with make-up and shading. An example of this is Rock Week; look at Adam’s nose when he’s with Slash and with no make-up. And then look at his nose on performance night with full make-up, their two completely different noses a couple of day apart.

I’ve seem pic of him when he was 12 and other than the fact the nose is a little bigger, it is the same nose. I agree with VegasGirl, Adam knows exactly how to shape his nose with make-up. His nose does look different when he doesn’t wear make-up.

Plus, his vocal coaches would have screamed “NOOOOO” if it had been suggested and he took voice lessons from about age 10 1/2 -11 until he was 20.

Billy Joel had his nose broken several times as a teen while boxing. He wanted to have surgery to correct it and the doctors told him it would change the sound of his voice. The same was told to Barbara Streisand.

I think it is Adam’s black hair and smile that makes him resemble his mother. He has her smile and chin. And like Neil said at the Newark concert, she draws people to her like Adam does. She always seems to be smiling and seems to have a sunny disposition. Plus I think his nose is a combination of both his parents noses. Neil overall looks like his Mom but I think he has his father’s personality, very sarcastic and droll.

To me the covers meant almost as much as the music itself.

Thank you for the link. I just spent the past 40 minutes studying those covers. It’s been years.

I can totally see why Adam had problems finding love being a gay man. Most of the “fat” and “fag” comments about Adam came from gay men. They seem to be very harsh on and critical of his bad skin, fat tummy, and feminine side. Adam OTOH seems to appreciate all sorts of beauties. He always look for and say something positive about how others look. So ya, I can see him not having much luck with his “own kind”.

edit: knock off the defensiveness, please

  • rowenaaine

I think the only time Adam looked ordinary was when he was a natural ginger. Not unattractive, mind you, but closer to “average.” His eyes were still piercingly lovely, but the pale hair in combination with pale skin and freckles made him fade out. His decision to dye his hair black was, IMO, brilliant. On some people the extreme hair color would have been ridiculous, but on Adam it just accentuated his eyes and bone structure. Add in the fact that he is tall and broad shouldered, he is able to carry it off without looking like a sickly emo waif.

I get that he doesn’t love the freckles and usually covers them, but when he goes with lighter makeup to let some of them show its a bonus because it is so different from the “ideal.” (I have freckles myself, but nowhere near as many. My mom, OTH was completely covered in them head to toe, so I can feel his pain…)

Anyway, I think I’m trying to say…he’s no longer ordinary by any means. He metamorphasized (SP?) into a butterfly by his own choice, and to him, his current look IS his real self. Even when he dresses down, he’s rarely without eyeliner and nail polish. It’s truly not an act, it’s who he is. If he loves the way he feels when he looks in the mirror, who are we to say he’s contrived or fake? I say more power to him, for having the balls to challenge society’s norms. He looks *good* in makeup and high fashion, so you go, boy!

I still have most of my old vinyl — and some of the albums are amazing pieces of art. It’s now all in storage because it has very little use but I wouldn’t think of getting rid of them.

I hope that Adam’s album will have a vinyl/digital bundle version so we can get a real “album” — a standard CD package will just not do. I think maybe the unexpected demand for the RS Adam Lambert poster may give RCA proof that there is a market for a lot of Adam merchandise. (And if it had an “old school” graphic colored vinyl disk it would be even better.)

-Agree. This is where Adam as an artist comes in. He makes an effort to match the song with his appearance. That’s what makes him exciting. This reminds me of the GMA show they recently did.

    Best AI, you’re right on!!!!!

What’s the most interesting is if you don’t like something Adam does…Wait 5 min and he’ll do something different!!!!! More choices than most of us can keep up with… :jittery_tb:

Adam is a creative dream come true! Kris fans seem to want to know where his stuff is…sadly he doesn’t want to step up to the plate in the world of superstardom! His fans will tell you its “au naturelle” that they love but he needs to act the “Star”. He should have been wearing the pinstripe suit which made him look like the AI Idol but apparently that’s too much to ask…not to start anything but Kris’s interviews with LA Times read as lazy to me…call it laidback whatever!

Adam gives it his all! The fact that Adam has 300 comments about a picture and Chris Daughtry has 8 comments about a performance tells alot!

The 2 that pop into my mind are Hugh Jackman and Johnny Depp that are still alive and relatively young.

  • olivian

@olivian, (loved your post on Ross’ recap, btw. Had to leave for work so couldn’t comment.) Believe me, I totally get what you mean about the subjectivity of attractiveness. Totally true. What I couldn’t wrap my brain around was the ‘ordinary,’ which is not the same thing. For reasons which we’ve all commented on for five pages, Adam is anyting but ordinary, IMO. You described exactly while I feel he is exceptionally attractive (sorry, I can’t quote on my phone).

Aw, thanks, glad you enjoyed my typing overdose. I just saw that first quote out of context, so I was responding to what the person who responded to that said without reading the initial post (if that sentence made any sense). And I do see what you mean about the difference between ordinary and unattractive. If the person was saying that Adam was ordinary as a person or something like that, then yes, I don’t get that–that seems factually untrue. If they mean lookswise–well, still odd, but I think looks are so subjective that I’m sure Angelina Jolie and Audrey Hepburn are ordinary-looking to some people. But yes, I’d have no trouble admitting it if I felt that Adam’s talent was amazing but his looks were not. I’m shallow enough that someone has to be goodlooking, not just sweet and talented, for me to find them really attractive. :) And Adams features, apart from his personality and talent, with or without makeup, are IMO completely and strikingly beautiful.

  • AllenTX

This is pure speculation. Some hateful comments on some forum really can’t represent the gay community. Besides, finding love or not really have nothing to do with whehter being cosidered good looking or not.

I know right? So sad. That said, the internet magnifies things and he seems to have found a close knit, loyal group of friends, but I totally understand where he comes from when he says he felt unattractive and fat. This is not just something about the gay community though, because it’s pretty much the same with the “female community.”

It’s amazing how much Adam changed his whole look just by dying his hair black. Best thing he could’ve done. For some reason, his coloring looks right with black hair, and it just emphasizes his everything.

I read this somewhere… You know who had the IT factor? Britney Spears. Not the best singer, but people in the industry back then thought she had the IT factor. In some ways Adam reminds me of her, except he is a phenomenal singer. Similarities: 1) Everyone was talking about Britney; 2) People went wild over her; 3) People couldn’t get enough of her; 4) People were charmed by her. 5) When she entered a room, all eyes were on her; 6) She commanded the stage.

I agree with the dislike of the derogatory comments, but I think it’s a big leap to generalize who the remarks come from. I’ve seen lots of remarks like that come from men and women. LOL no, your theory doesn’t work. I, for instance, posted recently in threads about Danny, Jason, Paula, Allison, Archie, David Cook, and whoever else. This is an Idol board and we post on different subjects if they are interesting even mildly. I’ll grant you that Adam does draw attention, but so does David Cook, and so does Danny, for instance, they also get a lot of posts. Adam’s certainly an interesting person but he’s not the only one, there are some others.

The ‘I’m too cool to care what I look like’ look, which is at this point is just boring.’

But some people really are too cool to care how they look. Ha. It’s not just an affectation. It just depends where one’s priorities. Adam’s theatrical, that’s fine, it can be fun, but it’s not everyone’s cup of tea. There are so many kinds of art. Some are loud and flamboyant, others are more subtle and come from within and don’t need the outer dressing. One isn’t better than the other, it’s just what we like …

For me I would say that Adam can be very magical on a stage, and then when I think about him being lighthaired and looking like his father, he seems less magical and more ordinary. And when he’s heavily made up in the morning like on GMA, he seems almost like a maniquin and it doesn’t seem the same in outside daylight as on a stage under theatrical lighting. I was never into KISS (ugh) or Michael Jackson after he had all the surgery and with all the makeup (grotesque) and it is unusual to see someone as made up as Adam is, especially in daylight outdoors in the morning. Just saying. I wonder if he’ll feel that he always has to keep up that look, or if someday he’ll change it.

  • http://kristentheyellowlab.blogspot.com/ Zsus

I would love if it RCA decided to include some sort of album-cover worthy fold out in the CD case. Back in the day, album covers were part of the record-buying experience. You and your friends would look at the cover, try to figure out the “hidden meaning” in the more artistic ones. I could see Adam being completely into that.

My husband and I still have tons of albums we haven’t had the heart to part with because of the covers and the memories that come with the covers. This conversation got me to open the cabinet and check them out. The first one I pulled out? Michael Jackson: Thriller.

One of the things that Adam has changed for me is that instead of reading The Wall St Journal, I now frequent the gay online sites. Not all are the class act that After Elton appears to be. I have seen many flame wars on the “lesser” sites. Adam has been trashed for everything imaginable. I have seen Adam being called “ten pounds away from Oprah”, “girlina”, and on, and on. Yes, he has his defenders, but there always seemed to be a battle. The older gay population seemed particularly intolerant of Adam.

But some people really are too cool to care how they look. Ha.

No such thing in show business. If you’re in the public eye, your image matters, and people are paid to do market research to find out if your image is working. If Cook’s management team told him tomorrow that his look is affecting album sales, he would be forced to change it.

There is no too cool to care when image is part of what your selling. And let’s not fool ourselves by thinking that Cook, or Daughtry, or Kelly, or even poor Hicks, are not selling a branded image.

I don’t think that having an unusual appearance or manner of dress or makeup is inherently superior or inferior to not thinking about appearances and having a normal manner of dress. One is not inherently more artistic than the other, and one is not inherently more authentic than the other.

It often seems that theatricality gets equated with inauthenticity, and simplicity gets equated with authenticity. That’s not true, IMO. On the other hand, it often seems that theatricality gets equated with being fascinating, whereas simplicity gets equated with being boring, and that’s not true either, again IMO.

I love Adam’s experimentation with clothes and makeup because that’s who he is, that’s one more way that he expresses himself, that’s one more way in which he releases creative energy, and therefore it feels like it comes from within him and it is completely authentic to who he is.

I like him equally well when he feels like dressing more normally, and if he changed and felt it was more authentic for him to dress that way all the time, than I would find him just as fascinating because it is his authenticity–whatever form that authenticity takes–that makes him fascinating to me.

With Kris–Kris is naturally casual. That’s how he is. I don’t find him boring or inferior because of this because for him, it’s being authentic to who he is, and I like who he is.

It’s sort of like Bowie and Dylan. I love what Bowie did visually–it didn’t distract from his music, it enhanced it and was yet another expression of his creativity because it was authentic to him. Same with artists like Mercury, MJ (before the freaky years), etc. Dylan, OTOH, was generally a much simpler dresser, and that worked for him–didn’t make him more authentic than Bowie, and it didn’t make him less interesting either.

Basically, as long as these guys are authentic to who they are–and Adam and Kris are that–then I will find them fascinating. People don’t need to express themselves in the same way in order to be fascinating.

He looks ridiculous. He certainly is no model, and is not even a recording artist yet. He’s a karaoke singer. Every day he becomes more of a joke.

This is by far the most contraversial of the photos from this photo session. And I’m sure not to everyone’s taste — but I think Adam looks great in all 12 photos.

It’s also interesting that all four major photographers who have photographed Adam have commented on how great Adam is to photograph. I think that Warwick Saint knows more about who is a great model than just about anyone.

The latest Cheap Trick album is available in vinyl as well as cd, so someone is still cutting records.

And Radiohead released theirs on vinyl. I really just want the big Adam pictures :devil_tb: and I don’t want them folded up like they do with CD posters.

And we have a laser turntable. They cost a bit more but you never have to find needles and they don’t damage the vinyl. Highly recommend them to anyone with a big vinyl collection if you want to transfer to digital files.

Adam just came off of Idol, his fans are on a big high right now. Daughtry has been around for 3 or 4 years, he’s not new and probably his fans post on his boards and not so much here.

YEP. Daughtry was most certainly a hot topic and the subject of many flame wars around here during the summer of 2006. A post on Kat, Taylor or Chris easily had hundreds of posts.

Check back in a few years on this board and see how heavy the posting is for Adam, it’s probably going to be a lot lighter and there will be other Idols in the spotlight then.

Check back here in a year and my posts on Adam will be a lot lighter, as I’ll be in the thick of Season 9.

so did Allison, Anoop and Danny. how many comments did their threads get?

And anyway, counting posts on message threads is a pretty useless gauge of just about…anything. Except for the intensity of an Idol’s post competition fan base.

Adam getting 250 comments regarding a photoshoot (ON AN AMERICAN IDOL MESSAGE BOARD) = guaranteed international super-stardom.

    Didn’t you know that?

When Adam’s album debuts, he will be the only artist that entire month to have an album released because all of the other artists are afraid that his sales will take a chunk out of theirs.

he looks very handsome and I love the contrast between the black and white attire and the red shoes…thanks MJ for providing the link!
I agree, he does have the “it” factor and imo he also has the “I can get a way with anything factor”…he’s just very appealing all around…talent-wise, personality-wise and physically as well…
and yes the Tudors is a great show lol but I dont think that’s the angle they were looking to convey in the photo shoot I think there was an aim for a more modern “rock star” look..a bit edgier and more retro…modern but with classic/vintage/throw-back elements…does anyone know what this photo shoot was for?

Adam’s versatility and ability to create major buzz makes me wonder whether 19E has plans to create a multi-platform brand for Adam in line with the CKX business vision if his recordings are successful.

It certainly something that they must be thinking about. It certainly fits right into the CKX business model. He’s proven he can command an entire arena audience, he can handle the press like a pro, and he seems to want to be an “icon”. Now I think first he has to put out a good album and continue to define his brand personality.

Pretty close to 300 comments about a silly picture, with undisclosed details, for a guy who is nothing more than a kareoke singer and definitely wears a lot of makeup and hairspray.

After reading a few comments I was curious as to what David Cook’s album cover looked like and how au natural he looked since that seems to be his brand now. Funny thing my Google search took me here….(first listing).

    http://mjsbigblog.com/?p=5775&cp=1#comments

Looks like even David did a bit of the “make up” stuff for his shoot…and I think he looks pretty good (wish he’d go back to the AI haircut).

I can totally see why Adam had problems finding love being a gay man. Most of the ‘fat’ and ‘fag’ comments about Adam came from gay men. They seem to be very harsh on and critical of his bad skin, fat tummy, and feminine side.

One of the things that Adam has changed for me is that instead of reading The Wall St Journal, I now frequent the gay online sites. Not all are the class act that After Elton appears to be. I have seen many flame wars on the ‘lesser’ sites. Adam has been trashed for everything imaginable. I have seen Adam being called ‘ten pounds away from Oprah’ , ‘girlina’ , and on, and on. Yes, he has his defenders, but there always seemed to be a battle. The older gay population seemed particularly intolerant of Adam.

I noticed the same thing but never commented on it before! Many of the comments posted on the gay sites by presumably gay men are absolutely vicious! I understand that my observations are pretty unscientific, but I’ve seen enough to be struck sit up and take notice of the nastiness. I’m sure there are many gay men who are fans, and I’m not trying to make generalizations because that’s unfair, but I sure felt bad for BB when I read them.

Even though he says that he loves the attention, it must be so strange at some level for BB to have the adoration and love of SOOO many woman.

Think about it–I’m a straight woman, but if all the women I met fell in love with me and were physically attracted to me, I might feel a little weird or unattractive. I’d be thinking, what about the men? Don’t they like me?

Anyway, just a thought. He’s said he feels sexy now for the first time, so good for him! He should feel that way!

  • olivian

I agree that counting comments on a message board makes no sense as a way to gauge popularity or future promise.

However, I think that Adam’s unusual level of buzz and complimentary attention from people who know that they’re talking about indicates positive things for his future. It doesn’t guarantee his success, but things like that, like the positive reviews that recognize his talent outside the idol bubble, are just a nice place to start from. The positive attention that Kris and Allison are getting indicates good things for them as well. I think that there is more regard from the industry for Adam, Kris, and Allison, especially Adam, as potentially interesting artists, than most contestants get coming off this show, and they deserve that. It doesn’t guarantee anything, but again, it’s a nice place to start from.

  • Sherena

Simply go back and check the “Bright Lights” video thread. Current…and the winner this year. I didn’t post because I simply didn’t care.

This whole post is an indication of why so many people say that Adam has the ‘IT’ factor. Even people who state they have no interest in him post multiple times to comment on the picture. You can love him, hate him, or feel indifferent, but there’s something that compels people to stop, look and comment on him. Over 250 posts

    THIS! It always happens!

  • Truthiness

Adam works his magic for me on tv when he creates a spell but to see him always with these costumes, and fake hair color, outlandish hairstyles, heavy makeup, nail polish etc., it starts to seem kind of tawdry, like a circus performer. I mean, does he ever take it off and show his real self?

Let me just say that one’s self is not determined by colouring one’s hair, wearing, make-up and nail polish or wearing different outfits, someimes weird ones. Doing those things doesn’t make one a circus or any less real. I speak from personal experience here about all of that. One can just be using your outside to match parts of your inside one feels like expressing at the time, and one can remain one’s true self inside, all while doing so. Or like dressing up and wearing heavier make-up to go to the opera and not just wearing your flip-flops and a ratty TShirt, it’s situational. Adam doesn’t wear his heavy stage make-up for his interviews. He maybe is wearing some powder and some eyeliner. In the rest of his everyday life, Adam wears jeans and Tshirt or maybe an ugly hawaiin shrt, and no heavy make-up. His GMA morning look didn’t have heavy make-up on, again, maybe some foundation and eyeliner.

And Adam in these photos isn’t wearing heavy stage make-up. It’s actually pretty minimal looking. Though some of the outfits, are a bit avant. Most of them are, thankfully, not as eleborate as this one and are just clothes with accoutrements, and not costumes. This picture really is the only one that does that. But it is a more artistic type of photoshoot, not Olan Mills, so it’s to be expected that parts of it will be a bit avant. But I don’t think that the rest of these pictures, are costumey and circusy. I find some of them ‘shopped to hell and a bit stiff, but typical of a more fashion photoshoot. So once again, it’s situational.

But all of this is MMV. Because it’s about looks, and that’s totally subjective.

  • Susan M.

I have seen a ton of pictures and videos of his GMA performance and it looked liked he didn’t have any makeup on at all. He didn’t even seem to try to cover up his skin and I have seen some pretty closeup picures from that day.

    ^^^^THIS!!!

Besides, finding love or not really have nothing to do with whehter being cosidered good looking or not.

    ^^^^THIS TOO!!

On vinyl cover art … I just did a story on a chic new hotel concept Hyatt is rolling out called Andaz. There are only three so far: London, New York and West Hollywood. I was at the WeHo location two weeks ago and they use vinyl covers as artwork. The room service menus, information, etc. are made from vinyl covers and it looks extremely cool. Especially because the rooms are very muted ‘“ grays, whites, chrome, etc.

  • Studio57

Okay, I gotta comment on this pic before I even read the other posts. I saw this pic today on IDF and something about it just struck me. I had to make it my background pic. I am in no way an art buff, nor do I want to have Adam’s babies, but this really came across to me as a beautiful piece of art. A couple of times when I have looked at it, I at times am struck by how surreal it is, and at other times I think he reminds me of the cat in this kid movie I used to watch with my kids called Cats And Dogs. there was one of those evil persian cats who used to always get ticked off when the housekeeper would put him in fancy outfits, lol.

And then another time I looked at it, it hit me. Do you remember the nickname that the idol board gave Adam at the beginning of the year? This picture paints it perfectly:

    The Dark Lord Screamanova

    MJ,
That’s just sad! I hope you’re wrong but I know you’ve seen it all!

I will say however, interest in:

Kat McPhee (who seems to be a fragile flower who needs taking care of & quite frankly not all there)

Taylor Hicks (who seems to have been the biggest Diva of all and missed many opportunities)

Chris Daughtry (who I Love but has the personality of a rock)

does not seem the same to me as interest in Adam…I guess we’ll see…

PS Equating Bob Dylan to casual style…the guy was stoned most of the time and probably didn’t know if he was wearing clothes! Brilliant but…

His looks from the beginning of AI to the end of AI certainly showed an awareness of image and an appropriate change to a more attractive one.

    The Dark Lord Screamanova

If you look into Adam’s eyes in this picture from a certain angle, you can see a distinctly ~evil glint.

Maybe the minions are on to something…

  • olivian

I mean, does he ever take it off and show his real self?

Not everyone’s real self is the same. Not everyone naturally dresses or acts in a way that seems normal to everyone else. Adam’s look is his real self–it’s how he naturally expresses who he is. Alison dyes her hair red because that feels more true to her real self. Kris wears plaid because that’s his real self.

Not everyone needs to be completely normal to be real. People express themselves in a tremendous variety of ways, some of which may seem normal to any given person, some of which may not, but unusual does not equal inauthentic, any more than normal equals boring. Adam and Kris are polar opposites in style, yet how they look and how they are feels completely authentic to me because hey, human beings can be very different and while Adam’s way of being and looking is more unusual than Kris’s, that doesn’t make it inauthentic–any more than it makes Kris’s way of being and looking boring.

  • tiger92

I recently saw the video posted on You tube by Adam’s friend Cassidy. My first thoughts were-he’s a cutie and a “twink”…I bet gay guys love him. Nope, he talks about just wanting to find love and the trouble he’s had. Amazing and beautiful people can have trouble finding love.

Well, I’m getting a “Three Musketeer” vibe from that photo but with a feather on steriods hat. :)

Creating buzz is always good. Adam, just like other contestants, is still on AI. If he couldn’t even get big buzz on AI related boards, it sure can’t be a good sign. I’ve never been an AI fan, so yeah, I agree that the scale and the intensity of the AI fanbase are no gurantee of one’s career longevity and success. But I’d say Adam has some good buzz in the industry too which is another good sign. We’ll see when his album drops. So far, he’s pretty interesting.

  • Truthiness

I don’t know that sort of thing really matters. It means he has a lot of fans…and detractors. As always, Adam is polarizing. But polarizing isn’t necessarily a good thing, hence his not winning, despite being the one that was most talked about. If the majority of the talk is bad, than count is not a good thing. MJ I almost always agree with you but I am not sure about this one. Perhaps, in a year the posts on this site will be focused on the new Season 9 Idols, but I certainly read a lot about David Cook on this site right now. So, I’m not so sure that the Adam posts will fade away so quickly.

I can see two radically different Adam futures one year from today:

    1. He album sells well and he builds a larger fanbase but also more detractors. (Probable case.)

    2. His album just does OK and he becomes the new “Taylor Hicks”. Adam has a loyal, passionate fanbase and also gets more detractors. (IMO not likely.)

In both cases Adam will tour and be great in concert, he will still push boundaries and he will generate a lot of comments. And I bet real money that Adam performs on Idol next season both because it’s good for Idols ratings and because he has consistently supported Idol in every press opportunity.

So, my prediction — Adam will be a big part of the Idol world, even a year or two from now.

There’s been a recent spate of Cook posts in the past week or so–more than I typically post since Season 8 began. Last year at this time, I posted about both Davids constantly, following every move they made as they toured and got ready to release their albums. I don’t post as much about either of them now–my blogging is mostly confined to news updates, TV performances, etc.

Once the albums are out, and particularly once the new season begins, my focus will shift, because my blog is all about the show and designed for people who are fans of the show. Those of you who aren’t fans of American Idol will probably be off to get your daily Adam fix somewhere else.

I freaking LOVE this photo. I love the other photos in the shoot but for different reasons. This one is absolutely amazing! Adam looked absolutely amazing and handsome on the GMA show. I don’t like him with heavy makeup either. But he was simply stunning that morning with minimal makeup. He looked fresh and happy. But of course, for some people who don’t like him, when the heavy makeup is not there, they pick on the stiff hair, and when the hair is down, they notice the ugly outfit, so forth and so on. For me, if I don’t like someone, I won’t even bother..

  • Susan M.

I have to disagree with you here too, Truthiness. What did Mansfield say, “Polarizing sells.” And I think we can all agree there are NO GUARANTEES about anything, but if you want a magic formula, Adam has just about every component you could hope for.

If you were trying to build a marketable product in a laboratory for RIGHT NOW, there is a strong chance you’d come up with something resembling Adam. I’ve never been a great believer in “there’s no such thing as bad publicity,” of course there is. But how much of Adam’s publicity has been bad? Like NONE. The gay thing had traction, but he dealt with it with the more candor, class and courage than anyone EVER has.

The mainstream media LOVES him, but not to mock or ridicule him like they do Britney, Paris, Lyndsey, etc. They present him as the exciting (sure a little different, but unequivocally talented and classy) guy that he is. They show tremendous respect for him and it’s contagious.

As he is anointed by more like Brian May, creators of major Fall series and blockbuster feature film directors, people will stand up and take notice. And even if they don’t like his style, no one can question his talent and not look pretty ridiculous.

Mainstream media (and the public) also tends to be pretty forgiving of celebrities that blow it, providing they have talent. (No problems there.) Sean Penn can punch out paps all day because the dude has talent. Paris Hilton will always be a joke, even if she moved to Calcutta tomorrow and began ministering to the poor.

  • Dlynne

I’ll add my two cents, FWIW.

The hair changes, the make-up changes, the mood changes and the clothes change, but those EYES are a peek into his soul. I don’t think you can get any more “real” than that.

  • Calliope

I hope that Adam’s album will have a vinyl/digital bundle version so we can get a real ‘album’ ‘” a standard CD package will just not do. I think maybe the unexpected demand for the RS Adam Lambert poster may give RCA proof that there is a market for a lot of Adam merchandise. (And if it had an ‘old school’ graphic colored vinyl disk it would be even better.

My tastes skew indie/underground/electro, so I still buy tonnes of vinyl since hipsters eat up that crap. A lot of the time the vinyl comes with a download code so you can get it straight to your computer (although I do have a vinyl player that can “rip” mp3s). Somehow, if RCA release Adam’s album on vinyl (for which I am keeping my fingers crossed for and hoping they sense a market for it! Four people at MJ’s at least, you guys!), I doubt they would give the code as well. ;)

This was my favorite from the shoot: http://glambert.lima-city.de/coppermine/displayimage.php?album=38&pos=6

I do like the one MJ posted for being such a great photo, even if it isn’t best Adam photo. It makes you pause, for sure.

I don’t mind airbrushed Adam either. As long as he isn’t orange like he was in the initial AI photoshoot, it’s all good.

As always, Adam is polarizing. But polarizing isn’t necessarily a good thing, hence his not winning, despite being the one that was most talked about. If the majority of the talk is bad, than count is not a good thing. They say there’s no such thing as bad publicity, but that’s not true.

Truthiness, I have to disagree here. In the context of AI where there is a chance at negative voting, polarizing isn’t a good thing. Out of AI, in the real world, polarizing is very good since it drums up interest. Sure, if it’s all detractors, then it’s not good (but that is not polarizing, that is being universally hated), but it doesn’t look like a likely case (even people like Paris Hilton who are loathed have enough fans and interest to sustain a career, and in the music world you get people like Lady GaGa and Britney who are hated while they are loved). It’s much better than a lukewarm response. Detractors actually play a part in fueling interest.

I’m not an artsy person and I don’t have much experience with photography but I know what I like……..with that being said i absolutely LOVE the photoshoot pics. Adam is stunning and would get my attention if in any magazine ad.

the clothes change, but those EYES are a peek into his soul.

Adam has sanpuko eyes (the whites of the eyes below the iris are prominent) which is rare and desirable in the print modeling world. People are drawn to those kind of eyes, so they are very useful when it comes to selling product.

  • Sherena

Zsus I didn’t know that term before. Could you explain why people are drawn to sanpuko eyes? This is very interesting. :D

  • Q3

Sanpuko eyes — very rare. Here’s a wiki link:

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sanpaku

Adam also has two symmetrical motes (dark specs from a depressions in the iris) one under each pupil. Motes are common, but have two, in the identical place plus sanpaku eyes must be really rare. Here’s a link to a photo:

MJ, some of us are Adam fans, but also Idol fans and fans of your blog. So I expect I will be around here for season 9, too.

MJ—-I found ur site towards the end of season 8 as I was searching for anything Adam. This blog is now the first site I come to everyday as my interest in other idols have increased. While I had originally vowed not to watch Season 9, i can’t deny my love for this “cheesy” show as u call it. I’ll be here for season 9 and anticipate there will be lots of idol updates on my season 8 favs. Thanks for all u do. And to keep it OT, I LOVe adam’s pics

Okay, that’s totally freaking me out. I joked around after the season ended that if anyone could get away with starting a religious cult, it was Adam. I’ve researched the phenomenon and he has all the components. Fortunately I buy into the fact that he’s a really good guy. But that stuff is weird. I have never heard of Sanpuko eyes or motes before. Very bizarre.

Once the albums are out, and particularly once the new season begins, my focus will shift, because my blog is all about the show and designed for people who are fans of the show. Those of you who aren’t fans of American Idol will probably be off to get your daily Adam fix somewhere else.

I would consider that all the American Idol Alumnae are also integral parts of the show and any news about them are also part of the American Idol focus of this blog . I tend to think blogs are created to generate some kind of business based on the hits or the revenues from affiliate sales. Anything that needs to float needs support.
So it is probably not a bad business idea to continue to put up news of all AI alum or more news of Adam , of Daughtry , of Cook, of Kris if the media so reports their activities. I do not think it is being biased if more news of one over the other gets covered by the media and thus gets posted here .I just think its just natural course of business.

And for those like me who have enjoyed visiting this blog, whether there is Adam news or not, it will not be too much of a stretch to visit MJ’s. It will be my pleasure.

I gotta admit, Johnny Depp in the 21 Jump Street days totally had me hooked. I loved me some Officer Tommy Hanson. After that, he totally got into the messy, smelly looking kind of look and that turned me off.

Adam’s apparent willingness to try/wear anything, I think photographers are going to take advantage of that. So my guess is we won’t be seeing any ‘natural’ photos of Adam any time soon.

ETA: Also, I don’t think the ‘natural’ look is consistent with the image he is trying to project, which is more of a rock/glam-rock-type persona.

I think “natural photos” of Adam are beautiful. In the Rolling Stone article, he had a simple photo of his face and hands, and his lovely freckles weren’t hidden.

I think he needs to dial it back a tad bit. Gaga’s theatrics appeal primarily to gay men, then to women, and finally to straight men. But Adam’s pics will likely alienate___??

And is somebody here actually saying that Adam is better looking than Johnny Depp? L M A O

Sanpuko or Sanapaku eyes: it’s all a bunch of malarkey. Hooey. Heck, Charles Manson had them too. And…??

  • http://www.photographybytracyt.com adam_lambert_rocks

And is somebody here actually saying that Adam is better looking than Johnny Depp? L M A O

    Ummm, well I didn’t say that… but since you asked… I will say that…

Yes, Adam is way hotter than Johnny Depp in my opinion.

Perfect example of different strokes for different folks. ;)

Yes I think Johnny Depp is hot but nowhere near as hot as Adam.

  • olivian

And is somebody here actually saying that Adam is better looking than Johnny Depp? L M A O

Um…looks are as subjective as talent or taste or anything else. It’s all a matter of opinion. Personally, I think Adam and Johnny Depp are both in my top 10 most beautiful men. They are both ridiculously beautiful–and actually, they both combine elements of classical handsomeness with something more exotic. But I don’t “LMAO” if someone doesn’t find Adam attractive, or Depp attractive, because no one is attractive to everyone, no matter how beautiful they may seem to me.

  • Susan M.

I’m with you, Adam Lambert Rocks. I’ve always liked Johnny Depp, but if you look at eyes, lips, bone structure and smile I think Adam is every bit as good-looking as Depp; and yes, right now? Way hotter.

And carolinacharms, Manson is of course an absolute psychotic, but was – by all accounts – extremely compelling and charismatic in his day. How the hell do you think he got otherwise “normal” people (meaning no history of violence or mental illness) to do those heinous things? That example only supports the contention about Sampuko eyes, which I’ve never heard of before tonight so I have no idea if it has any validity. Though it is an interesting concept.

  • olivian

There are characteristics that we tend to find attractive in eyes. The drug “belladonna” (or “beautiful woman”) is named that because women in Renaissance Italy used to use it to make their pupils larger. We associate large pupils with youth and vitality–babies have huge pupils–so that makes eyes with huge pupils more beautiful to us. That also why larger eyes tend to be attractive, period. I have heard of sanpuko eyes or whatever they’re called, though I’ve never noticed if Adam has them or not. Either way, Adam’s eyes are unusually beautiful. And Johnny Depp’s got beautiful eyes, very almond-shaped. I dunno, I find them both extremely hot because they combine physical features I find beautiful with insane talent. Hard to beat that.

  • Squirrely

Either way, Adam’s eyes are unusually beautiful.

    This I agree with.

  • Chipmunk

I’m an Idol fan first.I’ll definitely be here in season 9N but will still follow Adam wherever his news pops up.There will be many places off this blog to follow your favs even once the new season starts. Nothing to worry about on that front with regards to Adam so despair not Lambert fans

Check back here in a year and my posts on Adam will be a lot lighter, as I’ll be in the thick of Season 9.

Thank God! I was beginning to think this was turning into an Adam Fan site.

Yes I think Johnny Depp is hot but nowhere near as hot as Adam.

LMAO. Johnny is like a fine wine, he keeps getting better with age.

  • Elspeth

It’s probably been mentioned, although I haven’t read all the comments, that Adam can totally have a career in modelling when he isn’t singing. He really rocks those skinny suits. Can anyone say Vogue? :)

  • olivian

LMAO. Johnny is like a fine wine, he keeps getting better with age.

I totally agree about the fine wine part–Depp is one of those men who are just going to get more gorgeous as their faces get more weathered. My friends and I were mesmerized by him in high school when he appeared with blackened teeth and messy dreadlocks in the first POTC, so he’s just inescapably hot. :)

But I don’t understand why people say “LMAO” at the idea that someone might find Adam hotter than Depp–or, for that matter, Depp hotter than Adam.

Attractiveness and hotness are incredibly subjective things, just like talent and any other matter of taste. So, if someone finds Adam more attractive than Depp, that’s just their opinion. Even Angelina Jolie isn’t considered beautiful by everyone, so clearly no one’s appearance is safe from detractors. :) So, not everyone is going to find Depp attractive, or Adam attractive, or any other person considered gorgeous by many people. I personally find Adam and Depp both absurdly beautiful, but it’s not like it’s invalid or stupid to think that one of them isn’t attractive. It’s just an opinion, and opinions can be different.

  • Squirrely

I just found MJ’s blog this season – toward the end of the season. I’m not sure if I’m going to get as invested with AI next season. I really hope I don’t, but who knows. Adam opened the door for other strange and unusual characters to take a chance, so next season might be really interesting.

  • rowenaaine

This morning when I looked at his expression, I thought of Little Lord Fauntleroy. Damn, this photo is making us dredge up all sorts of assocations. For those not familiar, LLF was a book written by Frances Hodgson Burnett in 1885. The character’s name is tossed around as an insult most of the time. Courtesy Wikipedia: “Little Lord Fauntleroy is now most often used as a term of derision. It describes a pompous spoiled brat, usually a young male, who takes his wealth and privilege for granted.” http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Little_Lord_Fauntleroy#Film.2C_TV_or_theatrical_adaptations

To me, Adam’s scowl in the photo conveys, “yeah, I’m the Sh*t. Whatev. Take my friggin’ picture already so I can go out and slay some dragons.”

And I see the sanpaku eyes feature in many of his pictures, even when it’s just a tiny crescent of the white showing beneath his pupils. It’s definitely part of the piercing quality of his gaze. The motes were an interesting catch, Q3.

  • isisdagmar

Yes, looks are subjective to the eyes of the beholder. I find Adam Lambert 10x more attractive than Johnny Depp. Actually, I don’t find Johnny Depp attractive. He’s a bit scrawny, oily, and scraggly looking for my taste.

I looked up that Sanpuko eye and yes, he does have it. http://quantumfauxpas.files.wordpress.com/2009/03/adam-lambert-1.jpg

His photo shoot is amazing. I think one person said he should dial it back. Personally, I think they are way off base. Then Adam would become another one of those boring, vanilla performers that are all of the place. Adam should be Adam and not try and please all as some performers try and do (which never succeeds). Those who think he should dial back are usually those who settle for average, like vanilla icecream, can’t stand spicy food, hate change and are in bed by 10:00pm lol. But to each his own!!

  • Squirrely

Is there another picture that empahsizes this in Adam’s eyes? The one picture could just be how he was posing.

  • KLI

There are many other pictures showing the Sanpuko eyes.

This is the first time I’ve heard of this word (and I actually used to live in Japan, and this appears to be a Japanese word), so last night I specifically looked for pictures showing this characteristic.

The picture that most showed this characteristic was the one that he first used as his Twitter avatar–the Kabuki esque photo where his face his white and his hair is very stylized.

Off to find the link for you . . .

LMAO. Johnny is like a fine wine, he keeps getting better with age.

I don’t think it’s a matter of “LMAO,” it’s just a matter of opinion. Beauty is intensely subjective, and even icons of beauty like Audrey Hepburn and Cary Grant aren’t considered attractive by absolutely everyone. I personally think Depp is gorgeous, and I think Adam is gorgeous, but it’s not shocking to me or absurd if someone doesn’t share those opinions. :)

  • dyg1

PS Equating Bob Dylan to casual style’ ¦the guy was stoned most of the time and probably didn’t know if he was wearing clothes! Brilliant but’ ¦

Ah no, stoned or not, maybe sometimes yes and other times not, but the man is, was, and always will be brilliant. He’s still touring, never stops, he’s still dating beautiful talented women, he’s still giving deep, meaningful, thoughtful interviews to the top rock magazines, the guy is still as sharp and intelligent as he ever was. Don’t belittle him or generalize that everyone back then was stoned and therefore irrelevant. Not so.

Oh, really, carolinacharms? And you know this because…..??? You’re a photographer? Pleased to meet ‘cha.

lindajean139, I saw the name of that picture “Adam Lambert plucks his eyebrows” and thought, “Please tell me Perez isn’t going to do a whole expose’ on Adam’s brows.”

  • oceana

But of course, for some people who don’t like him, when the heavy makeup is not there, they pick on the stiff hair, and when the hair is down, they notice the ugly outfit, so forth and so on. For me, if I don’t like someone, I won’t even bother..

For myself I can say that I do like Adam, but I am not an uber fan. I’m not “under the spell” of him, and I can have less-than-positive opinions about some aspects of him without disliking him.

It’s funny to me because people make derogatory comments here about all the other Idols, David Cook’s hair and beard, Danny’s smile and religion, Kris being boring, Daughtry being dull and boring, etc., but if someone says something slightly unflattering about Adam, all heck breaks loose. As fans we all have to suck it up sometimes when we are reminded that this is not a fan board for any of them, and there will be criticisms.

Again, I like Adam, it’s just the hyperbole that turns me off. And tends to backfire, usually.

Thanks for this Tess. I knew I remembered David rocking the eyeliner and I loved it. I also preferred his later AI hair than the combover look he has now. Damn, though, he is an attractive man. His looks from the beginning of AI to the end of AI certainly showed an awareness of image and an appropriate change to a more attractive one.

Of course artists wear makeup when they’re onstage or doing a photo or cover shoot. But I like that David Cook, for instance, dresses casual most of the time and his makeup doesn’t seem overdone. Some of us like the casual vibe, that’s all. I will love Adam’s magic on a stage, on a screen, but not necessarily offstage. That’s all I was saying.

I don’t see how pointing out that David Cook wears eyeliner proves anything or makes any particular point. Adam does a lot more than wear eyeliner. They are two different types of people, with two very different images. David gets plenty of commentary on his eyeliner, his hair, and everything else about him. It’s the nature of a message board to dissect everyone.

  • oceana

After reading a few comments I was curious as to what David Cook’s album cover looked like and how au natural he looked since that seems to be his brand now. Funny thing my Google search took me here’ ¦.(first listing).

    http://mjsbigblog.com/?p=5775&cp=1#comments

Looks like even David did a bit of the ‘make up’ stuff for his shoot’ ¦and I think he looks pretty good (wish he’d go back to the AI haircut).

Yes and David designed the cover too (or at least helped). He has a BA in graphic arts (his major was theater and then he changed it). A multi-talented guy, like so many of the idols. He did musical theater in high school and college, and he’s not above wearing costumes too. His recent role as “Terry the light technician” on his website is pretty amazingly funny, you’d never know it was him. He has real acting and comedic chops.

Yes of course they all have an image and they all do what feels most comfortable for them. I hope this wasn’t intended to be a lashing out in retaliation for opinions being expressed about Adam. All artists wear makeup but it’s undeniable that Adam wears more makeup and outlandish costumes than most, he’s a flamboyant and theatrical type of artist. I really don’t think the fact that David Cook wears some eyeliner for cover shoots or onstage (or even offstage, who cares?) is relevant to Adam’s OTT theatrical appearance. Adam is lady gaga, David Cook is more grunge/hippie. Apples and oranges.

To me I wonder sometimes if Adam feels a bit imprisoned by his image. Or it’s probably just fun and exciting for him now.

Speaking of David Cook’s image, he comes out onstage wearing a green spandex bodysuit and dances around like a joker. He’s not really tied too heavily to his image I don’t think. I could see him being a good character actor, he seems to enjoy becoming different characters. I also think that he doesn’t care that much what he wears, that he wants to be comfortable onstage and believe me, some of his fans even complain that they want him to dress differently or get rid of the hats or whatver, but he does what feels right for him, as does Adam of course.

Oceana: The information on David is interesting. I knew some of it. I’ve liked DC during S8, but have started to follow and appreciate him more over the summer.(See, you can come on MJs for season 9, but still enjoy keeping up with other seasons…or even gain a new appreciation.) My husband loves him-has “light on” as his ring tone. I think his theatre background helped him sell his performances on AI. He comes across as intelligent, witty, and sincere. He definately gives a great interview. BTW, what college did he go to? I like David and Adam because they have depth-they’re interesting. I want to know more. I don’t know if it’s due to theatre experience or not, but they both have a certain something on stage. The presentations are different, but there is something similar also.

I am interested in the eye thing. I raise Arabian horses, and white around the eye in any form is looked down on, they call it human eye and shouldnt be used for breeding. Anyhow, horses with such eyes are known to be a little wild or even kind of crazy, just different so to speak. Most of those people with the white around there eyes seem to be different or unique. Sorry if OT. As far as the photos go, I was watching a Bowie video from Philly, and Adam is singing, Put on your red shoes and dance, the reason for the red shoes in photos?????? :ponder_tb:

Well I would hope that they at least use an original concept if some of these photos are potential record covers. The one in the box is clearly a rip off from the Madonna video, where she is in black vinyl with her little dog and a whip. The photos of Adam in the red shoes and purple tie? remind me of some Duran Duran photos, very Simon Le Bon circa 1980s and a few other artists of that era. Not digging the Tudor thing myself, not when one has been watching Jonathan Rhys Meyers, hubba hubba, doing it for two years on TV, sorry Adam. Did like the photos with the black shiny leather jacket and gloves, because it didn’t seem to be trying so hard to be anything per se.

The best pictures usually come about either by accident or not trying to hard.
