Joe’s Place reports there will be a Top 12 instead of a Top 13 AND that the wild cards will not be picked until NEXT WEDNESDAY after all the rejects sing AGAIN on TUESDAY.

That’s an entire week without viewer voting.

Tomorrow American Idol names the top 10 that WE put through with our votes.

HOWEVER, they will NOT be naming any Wild cards during Thursdays show. Instead, the 14 contestants that were not put through with the votes, will ALL come back to sing next Wednesday to earn a spot as a Wild Card. Then, on Thursday, the judges will name TWO (YES TWO) Wild cards to round out the top 12.

With multiple sources reporting a Top 13, it’s obvious the producers considered it. If Joe’s tidbit is true, I wonder what changed their minds?

I don’t see the point of bringing everybody back to sing if America can’t pick.

ETA: I’m hearing there’s a big red carpet event tomorrow night introducing the new cast. This latest bit of info could be false.

  • jtgraffix

surprisingly, i kinda like that idea. that’ll give some early favorites a chance at redemption

  • primeminister

There should be one “America’s Choice” wildcard spot then at least people can stay involved and vote.

  • cheese

I like the idea of letting everyone sing again, but what in the world are they going to do for 2 hours tomorrow?

I wonder if they really want to choose someone who sort of tanked and can’t justify using the WC pick on them unless they deliver a good performance on the big stage. Maybe Casey didn’t make it on votes or something.

A one-hour results show to reveal the final two contestants chosen by the judges sounds like a snooze, too. What are they going to do, bring all 14 of them up one by one and say “No, not you.” “Nope, not you either.”

  • BootStar

With multiple sources reporting a Top 13, it’s obvious the producers considered it. I wonder what changed their minds?

Maybe their chosen ones all made it through via fan voting so they didn’t need the 13th slot to add anybody back into the mix?

  • primeminister

Maybe their chosen ones all made it through via fan voting so they didn’t need the 13th slot to add anybody back into the mix?

Or, maybe the producers’ favorites didn’t do well last night and they wouldn’t be justified putting them through as wild cards based on those performances, so having them perform again would give these people another shot.

  • BootStar

Or, maybe the producers’ favorites didn’t do well last night and they wouldn’t be justified putting them through as wild cards based on those performances, so having them perform again would give these people another shot.

Ooooh, I like how your Knolly brain thinks! That would also explain why they’re okay with the top 10 not getting to sing again next week. (I’m assuming the voted-through finalists won’t be singing next week. Is that right?)

  • Owlgirl

Didn’t they do a viewer’s choice wildcard in Season 2? I thought that was how Clay Aiken made it in.

This seems like a strange set-up, but I’m glad I’ll get the chance to see some people perform again.

edit: And now I see they mentioned the Clay Aiken thing at Joe’s Place. Really would like to see them do a top 13 that way.

  • jpfan

So 14 people who were meh get to sing again and the judges pick 2? I think most people will figure out the 2 they’re going to pick even before anyone sings a note. I’m pretty sure if they LOVED You but the fans didn’t you’re going through.

  • http://www.twilightslo.com Mateja

They want to waste one whole week to pick 2 wildcards? This show is run by idiots. I’m sorry.

  • http://www.amadcow2.com amadcow2

Yeah, I’m not crazy about this idea…

… but, if they dropped the bottom 2 from each night and put the 10 back for 2 w/c slots where there is some kind of vote (like the judges can pick from the top 5). However, I doubt that will be the scenario.

I’m betting… ‘Oh, Julie sucked and we can’t justify giving her a pass on that turd of a performance, so we better do something else.’

  • krurly

also do you guys know if the songs they sang will appear on itunes? i really hope so! i want to buy Scotty’s song already

  • _nyanyanie

so, no one is gettin eliminated this thursday???

  • tierbee

That sounds like a week of not watching Idol to me. I don’t really feel like watching them sing and then not voting. Thought we were done with that :)

  • tripp_ncwy

This is a waste of time next week. This may be a way to get more girls in the finals. It would give them better odds for a girl winner. I guess it would depend on if the wildcards are split one girl & one guy or the best two of any gender.

Also, if the top 10 already contains the favorites, it gives them an exta week of rehearsal time before they have to sing again.

  • Elliegrll

Maybe this has something to do with the rumor about the UMG people choosing songs for people. It’s hard to eliminate someone in this sudden death setup, when they didn’t get to pick a song that they were comfortable with.

  • rayni

Heh – they’re making it up as they go, aren’t they?!!

  • tinawina

Or, maybe the producers’ favorites didn’t do well last night and they wouldn’t be justified putting them through as wild cards based on those performances, so having them perform again would give these people another shot.

I agree. And I’m not even knollish.

Somebody they love didn’t make it last night. **coughBRETTCASEYcough** LOL

If we’re not voting, this sucks.

… but, if they dropped the bottom 2 from each night and put the 10 back for 2 w/c slots where there is some kind of vote (like the judges can pick from the top 5).

Something like that could work. Especially dropping the bottom 2 vote getters from the guys and girls.

  • Dakota01

Maybe it has to do with the Idol finale being pushed back a week. If it’s been pushed back, wouldn’t they need to do something to fill up an extra week?

  • Montavilla

    Oh, Booooo!

I agree that what’s the point of having them all sing again if we don’t vote. How many freakin’ times have the judges heard these people sing now? Do your job, judges! Just pick the freakin’ finalists and let’s start the season!

Top Thirteen had a neatness to it. It fit the schedule and it allowed each judge to pick one favorite. This feels like a cop-out because the new judges don’t want to be mean and pick a favorite.

Or maybe it’ll be J-Lo and Steven getting to pick and Randy being the poor relation. Like when he and Kara had to share the song choice in Seasons 8 and 9.

  • cheese

Maybe it has to do with the Idol finale being pushed back a week. If it’s been pushed back, wouldn’t they need to do something to fill up an extra week?

Yeah, a top 13 instead of a top 12. Idol’s own Top 24 preview indicates that the field would be cut from 24 to 12 on Thursday. I think it’s pretty clear that TPTB didn’t like the boys’ voting results and/or the girls’ performances.

I’d rather just have each judge pick someone tomorrow. I don’t even care if they pick someone who sucked this week. If that person continues to suck, no one will vote for them and no harm done.

  • darksiam

I agree MJ. This move does not make sense at all.

Instead, the 14 contestants that were not put through with the votes, will ALL come back to sing next Wednesday to earn a spot as a Wild Card.

Oh, now this makes perfect sense! Lol.

  • mymagoogle

oh beejebus. If they were going to add a week, why oh why didn’t they let us vote off 2 or 3 each of guys/girls each week instead of half of them in one swoop in one week.

How many freakin’ times have the judges heard these people sing now? Do your job, judges! Just pick the freakin’ finalists and let’s start the season!

    Word.

  • jpfan

I think this gives them a full episode to focus on JLo weeping and crying as she struggles to pick the wild cards. They’ll waste at least 30 minutes on that. I think maybe it’s in her contract. You know American Idol is equally about a)picking a winner and b)reviving her career.

  • http://myspace.com/girlgeek mj

I’m hearing there’s a big red carpet event scheduled for tomorrow night to introduce the cast. I can’t imagine they’d leave the wildcards out.

    This could be false.

  • madison

Idol is shooting itself in the foot. We finally have one week where we see everyone perform and get to vote. Then we have to wait two weeks before we hear from the favorites again? This will kill the momentum, for both the viewers and the contestants. I bet ratings take a hit.

I have to agree with that. Wasting a whole week on non-voting, when the voting just started makes absolutely no sense. Good way to lose viewers, IMO. Hope Joe’s Place is wrong about this one.

It probably is. Why would the results show be 2 hours tomorrow?

  • Cari

If this entire thing isn’t false (which I’m crossing my fingers that it is), I hope that at least PARTS of it are false. Like the audience having no say, it occupying the entire week, and all 14 performing again. lol

  • madnessinmotion

I hope they don’t do this. Idol is off to a much better start this year than last and I think they will lose a lot of those returning viewers who took a year off if they devote a whole week to just letting the ones who didn’t make it perform especially if they don’t let people vote in the Wildcard. Even my first thought was I may not watch next week even though I ALWAYS watch Idol.

Y’all are missing the most important part–does this mean I have to wait another week to find out if David Cook has the boot song? :)

  • Mary102

Hmm, it seems kind of premature to say for sure that the judges have decided on ONLY 2 WCs this year. What if three favs don’t make it through on voting? (very possible, especially with so many favs reportedly doing mediocre jobs this week). IDK, spoiler or no, it just seems that the judges would likely want to see how the top 10 worked out voting-wise on Thursday, and then figure out if they really needed to add 2 or 3 extra WCs. Then they can still have the performance show next week for the WCs, and have some time to pick them.

  • larc

If there’s anything to this, it definitely has the smell of new paint. TV Guide still shows S10 finalists performing on Wednesday night Mar 9 with one eliminated the next night.

Could it be it was decided that the viewers are going to choose the wildcards and not the judges?

OK, now somebody please tell me why they didn’t just eliminate the bottom 6 vote getters this week, and then eliminate 6 more next week!

If there’s an extra week for semifinals, take advantage of it. Give everyone an even shot. Why does this show make me so crazy?

  • http://mjsbigblog.com/luvadamlamberts-american-idol-tour-2009-washington-dc-re-cap.htm luvadamlambert

The rejects from this week? Or people that didnt make the top 24? I hope its the 2nd one!!! I would LOVE to see Jacee!!! Its still a good idea though

  • sf3456

They want to waste one whole week to pick 2 wildcards? This show is run by idiots. I’m sorry.

This. If this is true, what are they going to do for two hours tomorrow? It doesn’t take that long to premiere Jennifer Lopez’s video and it shouldn’t take that long to announce the people voted through.

  • MayMirabella

Didn’t they do a viewer’s choice wildcard in Season 2? I thought that was how Clay Aiken made it in.

Yes and in Season 3, Jennifer Hudson was selected by Randy Jackson as his wildcard pick. So Wild card choices can be very good.

  • milwlovesadam

    Maybe each judge gets to pick a wildcard? 10 + 3 = 13

  • http://www.last.fm/user/lifeonthemoon jstxanothrxstory

So instead of getting an extra week with 13 good contestants, we’re stuck sitting through a week of our 14 rejects while the Top 10 we have just chill. Cool.

I don’t buy this solely because there’s a Top 12 party tomorrow, and it’s pointless to have a 2 hours results show.

  • MayMirabella

OK, now somebody please tell me why they didn’t just eliminate the bottom 6 vote getters this week, and then eliminate 6 more next week!

If there’s an extra week for semifinals, take advantage of it. Give everyone an even shot. Why does this show make me so crazy?

Exactly. Or instead of having all 14 return to sing again, do as they did in Season 8 and just ask a few to return for Wild Card spots and at least have Viewers vote for one and make it a top 13.

But once the viewers are voting in a particular season, it seems dumb to have that stop for a week so the judges can make a selection. I have less trouble with those who did not make the cut getting a chance to sing again….but why not have a Sing for Your Life on the spot competition during a 2 hour results show tomorrow and then have the judges go back stage on a commercial and select one boy and one girl. Ie, Nigel should do it ala his show, SYTYCD..they do that all of the time.

What in the world are they going to do in a 2 hour results show? It does not take long to announce 10 finalists but you know that will be very, very sloooow and dragged out. I bet they fill it with perfomances from professionals plus I bet besides JLO video, she performs live or something. Zzzzzzzz…I only like results for results and not all these pro performances. It does seem like the show is going to heavily promote JLo the singer and performer and we will see her perform a lot during results night..just guessing.

But we were so looking forward to Thursday results show and who the judges would pick as wildcard, now not so much if those rejected get to come back while the top 10 have more time to rehearse..lots more time this way. It seems unfair to wildcard picks to do it this way. They get less rest and less rehearsal time than audience picks.

Maybe the judges and/or producers want to be sure some of their favorites whom they believe just had a rough start, have another chance. I am thinking Jordan and Clint and Jovanny and for the girls, not sure yet but maybe one or two faves perhaps did not do as well as hoped. , I think the judges want to see perform again so they can justify their wild card picks.

But this will not sit well with fans who want to vote and say at this stage of the game and not sit and watch WC for a week and be dragged out. And I think a Results show of 2 hours that will be incomplete results, they will lose viewers or viewers will tune out first hour and come back near the end to see who the top 10 are.

  • jersey

I’m thinking this may be false. WPLJ just a few minutes ago was pimping the Idol red carpet top twelve party tomorrow night that their afternoon dj is attending. How can they have a top twelve party with ten contestants?

America alreday picked 10. Let the judges choose one favorite eacgh, to put back in the race.

  • desiree_chick

Would it have been smarter to just revert back to the three week top 24 breakdown, like they have done in the past, knowing that some contestants may not on be everybody’s radar? This really should not be true, but this show just seems to can’t decide what it wants to do. Only just to keep a couple of contestants. Wonder if UMG have something to do with this?

  • chearts77

So, why is tomorrow night 2 hours long?

  • webster

They’re crazy to make them sing again. It seems clear to me that they are working their bunny brains overtime to make sure they have the best cast possible, both for the entertainment value of the show and to get a credible winner. The 12 vs 13 thing is purposely vague to stack the deck the way they want. So obviously wc picks will be the same. There’s no way they need them to sing again, so just pick.

The only thing they might “need” is time to gauge audience/media reaction to the vote.

  • chicksineggz

OK, now somebody please tell me why they didn’t just eliminate the bottom 6 vote getters this week, and then eliminate 6 more next week!

If there’s an extra week for semifinals, take advantage of it. Give everyone an even shot. Why does this show make me so crazy?

    Yeah, that’s what I’m wondering.

I’m also just hoping that this isn’t true. Actually, I feel like the producers don’t even know what they want to do yet, and they just want to see how the audience reacts.

  • fuzzywuzzy

I think that the producers will change whatever they want this year to optimize the casting of the show and get the winner that they want (I think that they already know who or at least have narrowed it down to a couple). That would include a week(s) with two eliminations in order to achieve the date of the finale.

  • karenc

Maybe the red carpet is for the top 10 that definately made it. Then, of those, the judges will pick some wildcards to sing next week, then there will be voting again on the wildcards, either from judges or hopefully the public. The ones that were not selected for wildcard for next week will be sent home, so they will still have an elimination. When they did the wildcard in Season 8, that’s what they did, they selected who was going to get the chance and sent the rest home.

So, in this way, anyone the producers or judges or whoever decides these things will get the ones they want in the top 12. That is the advantage for this from their point of view.

  • damroberts744

Its really kind of pathetic that the number 1 show on tv seems to be making up their schedule as they go along.

So with two weeks of top 24 bs, I really don’t understand why they didn’t just go with the top 24 format from previous seasons or at least do something that works better than this, because in all honesty, I feel like this format is messy. I guess I’ll wait until we have our entire top 12 to judge how good this format was at picking the best of the best.

  • Buffynut

Damn, no update on this yet?! :(

  • johanna

Great I won’t have to watch next week. Will read the recap here and will wait impatiently for the show in 2 weeks.

  • Keel

Y’all are missing the most important part–does this mean I have to wait another week to find out if David Cook has the boot song?

Heh. That’s it exactly. (Seriously though. The Cook fandom is driving me nuts with the angsting over every single Cookie mention/tweet and whether it means boot song or not boot song. And the preemptive blaming of RCA/19 if he doesn’t get the boot song is just the best, let me tell ya.)

  • Grammie Kari

Why do things seem so disorganized this season? Nigel is looking for the perfect formula, but it just doesn’t seem right. Obviously, they want the voting public to have less power. I just don’t like this format!

  • milwlovesadam

Oh man. These reality shows are just too much sometimes. Now, it seems like they’ll parade the true top 10 down a red carpet, then, make the others who were booted “sing for their lives.” Sounds like a gimmick borrowed from Ru Paul’s Drag Race. ( Go Raja Go! Win it girlfriend! )

I still think each judge will pick a wild card, then it will be the top 13. IMO.

  • JudyOhio

Its really kind of pathetic that the number 1 show on tv seems to be making up their schedule as they go along.

Indeed. It’s stops being a contest when they change things up too much. Manipulative. Don’t like.

I came in just now hoping to see an update that the change is just a rumor. Still hoping they are wrong on this. Rules shouldn’t be messed with when people are trying to be competitive on the up and up. Not fair.

Yes, I thought I heard Ryan say Top 12 tomorrow too.

  • larc

It now appears that everything will go according to the original schedule tonight. There is reliable info from a well-placed source that there were some irregularities with the new online voting setup (read hacking) that distorted results. FOX has decided that those voting results will be “interpreted liberally” and a disclaimer will run at the end of tonight’s show stating that suspect votes were not counted.

It sounds as if what they actually decided to do was assign online votes that were counted at all in such a way that they agreed with phone and text voting results.
