Sales News – Week Ending – 05/12/16

English rockers Radiohead will top the album sales chart, but will they be able to fend off Drake’s streaming numbers to top the BB200? We may have a split chart this week. “Moon Shaped Pool” has already exceeded the equivalent album prediction BB had of 150K with pure sales according to HDD….so we’ll see. Canadian rapper Drake released the physical version of his album this week and he is second in sales. Beyonce is third in her third week and released a physical version of her album this week as well.

Idol judge Keith Urban is headed to the top of the Country Album charts with “Ripcord” debuting 4th in sales. Prince continues to sell well with two albums in the top 10 – “The Very Best of Prince” and “Purple Rain” at 5th/9th respectively. Cole Swindell (Country) is currently debuting in 6th with Adele at 7th, Now 58 (featuring Kelly Clarkson and Zayn) at 8th and Chris Stapleton making it 3 country acts in the top 10.

Carrie Underwood is 34th with “Storyteller” and Jordan Smith’s “Something Beautiful” is 41st.

Rapper Chance decided to suddenly release a surprise album this week, but it won’t be topping the sales chart next week. He offers his albums for free and SS won’t count them. It may still chart on the BB200 based on streams. Chance is lobbying to have free albums eligible for Grammys. I can see why free doesn’t count on sales charts, but I’m with him that they should be eligible for awards even if I don’t totally understand his business model. He earns money at concerts? Prince once gave away his album free in a British newspaper.
