Monday Morning Mediabase Update: Jul 6-12

Six milestones this week including one number one, two double miletones and a song in the top thirty on three charts.

Colour me surprised. If you had told me back in the fall that Canaan Smith would hit number one on the Country chart after spending months tooling around the bottom of the chart, I would have told you that was wishful thinking. Usually chart runs to number one on the Country chart are fairly quick campaigns so that early adapters don’t lose interest by the time you need that last push to make it to number one. On Country, you really do have to rely on pretty much everybody getting behind the song at the right time to top the chart. But, Canaan Smith has pulled a rabbit out of his hat and he has an excellent arrow in his quiver to help propel his second song. Needless to say, Canaan Smith’s number one is a a first for his franchise (The Amazing Race). But interestingly, it is only the second number one for a Country male from the shows we follow here at MJs. While Carrie has rung that bell a bazillion times and Chris Young and Miranda Lambert from Nashville Star have also made a habit of getting to number one, The Voice, The Sing-Off, X-Factor and AGT have never produced a male country star who could do that. Josh Gracin from the second Season of American Idol did once top the Country Songs chart back in 2004 with “Nothin’ To Lose” (the first Idol male to have a song top an airplay chart). Anyway, Canaan Smith has the number one song “Love You Like That” on both the Monday and Published Mediabase charts. He had a huge surge in spins this week to race past Jason Aldean to nab the spot. I’m impressed.

Fifth Harmony from the US Franchise of the X-Factor wraps up two more milestones this week. “Worth It” featuring Kid Ink goes top 20 on Rhythmic and top 30 on HAC.

Tori Kelly just released a new single not long ago, but it’s quickly claiming its place on multiple charts. This week it appeared on the HAC and Rhythmic charts in the top 50.

Finally, we have Adam Lambert’s “Ghost Town” moving into the top 30 on AC. The song is charting in the top 30 of all Mainstream formats (top 20 on HAC).

The numbers for the new chart reporting week are already out, so we might get some info for the artists we follow. We’ll have to re-jig the numbers threads. With sales numbers being released on the weekend, we will end up with days where we don’t have any significant number news to report. Do we still want a daily numbers thread (to avoid numbers falling to far off the main page and keep discussions going)? Sound off in the comments section.
