Lee DeWyze Album Release Date Set for 11/16

I knew that October 26 date would not hold. Lee’s “untitled” debut has been pushed back to 11/16.  No title yet, but if Idol tradition holds, it will be self-titled like most Idol debuts.

Lee DeWyze’s Untitled Debut Is Set For Release November 16

Los Angeles, CA- Aidolslivesunrise2010-5ugust, 19, 2010 – 19 Recordings/RCA Records announce November 16, 2010 as the release date for American Idol Season 9 winner Lee DeWyze’s debut album. The 24-year-old Illinois singer-songwriter impressed millions when he won America’s most watched music reality television show this year.

DeWyze has been on the nation-wide American Idols Live Tour the entire summer, writing and recording the music for his debut. “I’ve been very fortunate to be able to collaborate with some amazing songwriters on new songs over the past 3 months, ” says Lee. “I can’t wait for everyone to hear my debut album.”

The new music will showcase Lee as an individual artist and longtime songwriter who has come a long way since his audition for American Idol in Chicago. DeWyze is a self-taught musician who has been singing and playing the guitar since his early teenage years.

Lee recently won the Teen Choice Award for Male Reality/Variety Star and continues to impress his fans with his growth and maturity as an artist in the short time since he won the show.

  1. Good to have confirmation about the release date. I think other albums coming out that day are the new Kanye West album and the new Rascal Flatts album. But that time of year there’s no avoiding big albums.

I understand why they can’t mention specific songwriters because they don’t know what’s making the album. Same applies for what the album will sound like. But are there any rumors about Lee’s producers? Has he said he’s working with one or more?

  2. That sounds more like it. Although I am looking forward to the cd I want him to take as much time as he can to get it right. I can’t wait to hear who he has been writing with.

  3. I get a vibe from him that he likes holding back surprises, so it wouldn’t surprise me if it was his idea not to talk about his co-writers. Just like I won’t be surprised if he whips out an original at his hometown Idol concert.

    Looking forward to this album!

  4. That makes more sense then trying to rush it out in October. He’ll probably be facing a lot of big competition in terms of releases, but there was probably not a real good way to try and avoid that.

Using the time line of Kris’s single release of LLWD to the Nov. 17 release of his album as a guide, I’m expecting that Lee will release his debut single sometime in late September?

  5. Good to have a date, and looking forward to it. I am not too bothered by the lack of information about it because the album doesn’t always turn out as expected anyway.. As long as Rob Cavallo’s name isn’t mentioned, I am happy…

  6. Maybe this release date is linked to the release of David Cook’s album? The thought might be that those going to pick up David’s album may see Lee’s and pick it up at the same time?

  7. Now this is an interesting turn of events, since there was some speculation that November was wide open, & that Cook was possibly going to be releasing late November. Will RCA try to link the two? Or are they going to keep them as far apart as possible? I already see a small meltdown happening on twitter by Cook fans regarding Lee’s drop-date information.

  8. Cookie and Lee are similar enough in style that I hope they don’t release on the same day. With money still being as tight as it is, I have a hard time picturing too many people buying both. (Although I will. I’m already saving my pennies. :))

  9. Kinda relieved they decided to remove the God awful references to “making himself cry,” and the dreaded “paint salesman back story”.

  10. Two Davids, Kelly, this will be a busy fall for idols. And lot of comparisons idol fans can get busy into. LOL

  11. But are there any rumors about Lee’s producers? Has he said he’s working with one or more?

I’m curious about this as well. Since we haven’t heard about a producer, can we assume there are multiple producers? Did Kris have one or more than on producer?

Kinda relieved they decided to remove the God awful references to “making himself cry,” and the dreaded “paint salesman back story”.

Word. This PR sounds like it was written by a sensible person for once. Shocked.

Maybe this release date is linked to the release of David Cook’s album?

I have no idea what this means about David’s release date, but frankly, I don’t even want to think about David’s album anymore. Haha. I’m not so hopeful about a 2010 release these days what with the seemingly glacial pace they are going about recording… sorry, my downer post of the day =P.

  12. I’m very glad to hear of a confirmed release date. I’m so excited to hear new music from Lee! I am surprised they moved it 3 weeks up but this is a good release slot for Lee.

AllenTX, I think Kelly said at one point she may release early next year so she may not be in the mix this fall. But with Jennifer Hudson set to drop this fall it is still going to be a lot of Idols.

  13. If David’s and Lee’s albums are released at same time, wouldn’t that work against Lee? Cook has a far bigger fanbase and if his fans don’t have the $$ or don’t want to buy both albums, they aren’t likely to get Lee’s over Cookie’s. The 2 guys don’t have a very similar sound or style, so linking them together doesn’t really work in my mind…

  14. Since we haven’t heard about a producer, can we assume there are multiple producers? Did Kris have one or more than on producer?

KA had more than one producer. I can’t actually find anything about a press release other than the post about his drop date tweet, MJ, but the Billboard story about it didn’t mention producers as such although both Remi and Gad did end up producing tracks. They did talk a lot about the cowriters.

I’m still not convinced that “surprising” everyone is a good strategy. If the writers are good ones, then attaching their names builds buzz. And he needs some.

  15. I doubt that DC’s and Lee’s albums will be released at the same time because the label won’t want to compete with itself. DC’s album is going to be released either earlier if it is ready, and it doesn’t look likely, or tying in with the new season of idol. A single late fall or early 2011, and an AI performance to launch the album. Similar to Casey…

  16. If David’s and Lee’s albums are released at same time, wouldn’t that work against Lee?

Not that I think it would actually happen in a million years, but I think it’s a TERRIBLE idea for BOTH guys, for countless reasons. There will a a small amount of synergy, where some fans who only keep track of one but like both would be reminded and buy the two at once (I think that worked in David’s favor somewhat when he dropped the same day as Nickelback- likely some Nickelback fans bought his CD who otherwise wouldn’t have known it had dropped), but mostly, I think the fanwars and media spin would just be really ugly, no matter what the sales outcome.

DC’s album is going to be released either earlier if it is ready, and it doesn’t look likely, or tying in with the new season of idol. A single late fall or early 2011, and an AI performance to launch the album.

Sigh… I really do hope we get a DC album in 2010… but you may be right…

  17. Well, its not too far off the mark, its only 3 weeks from the original date. I am so excited to find out who he is working with, but it seems like he has co-written every song, from what I have read out and about on the blogosphere, is that a first for an Idol or something, MJ? Anyway, looking forward to the album, videos and his solo tour.

  18. Cook has a far bigger fanbase

Is this true? I never hear about David Cook anymore except on this blog – he seems to have dropped out of pop culture altogether. But in general, Idols do worse on their second album, so I’m not expecting great numbers from David. Not expecting them from Lee either, but that’s just the nature of the business these days.

  19. As long as Rob Cavallo’s name isn’t mentioned, I am happy…

Call me naive, but what’s wrong with Robert Cavallo? He seems like a pretty prolific and successful producer to me.

I doubt that DC’s and Lee’s albums will be released at the same time because the label won’t want to compete with itself.

That is a downside but the benefit is increased traffic on Itunes and at record stores which can benefit both. I thought the release of David Cook’s album on the same day as Nickelback’s probably helped David. I also thought that when David Archuleta released Crush on the same day as the Jonas Brothers released their album that this probably helped him.

  21. I am so excited to find out who he is working with, but it seems like he has co-written every song, from what I have read out and about on the blogosphere, is that a first for an Idol or something, MJ?

If he ends up having a writing credit on every single song on his album, it’ll be a first for an Idol “debut”. David Cook ended up with 10 of 13 writing credits from the his main album tracks, and then 3 more bonus/hidden tracks. Kris had 9 of 12 main tracks, plus two bonus tracks he cowrote. Daughtry had 9 of 12 main tracks on his debut. He cowrote every song on his sophomore album.

I never hear about David Cook anymore except on the blog so I have no idea how popular he is. But in general, Idols do worse on their second album, so I’m not expecting great numbers from David.

I think how David’s album does depends of promotion and the lead single. A lot of people have forgotten about him, but a lot of people loved him. I honestly think they just need to be reminded. Of course new fans would be great to.

  22. Well that’s no surprise! LOL

I don’t think anything that happens with Lee’s drop date has anything to do with DC, other than I doubt any label would launch 2 acts on the same day if they don’t have to.

I want to hear Lee’s stuff. I’m really curious to find out which direction he ends up going.

  23. [Cook] seems to have dropped out of pop culture altogether.

Very briefly, he seems to have a lot of media goodwill still, largely because of his genuine sports fandom and charity work. Supposedly DJs who spin the songs have mentioned him being in studio, and somebody over at ABC News went out of his/her way to find a video of his new song to add to the blurb about his US Open appearance (and we can assume that wasn’t at the behest of RCA, as they’ve been taking them down as soon as they find them, including, fairly quickly, that one).

Call me naive, but what’s wrong with Robert Cavallo? He seems like a pretty prolific and successful producer to me.

He produced all of Cook’s album and a few tracks on Lambert’s. It is often considered, at least among those artists’ fans, to be less than his best work. But it’s pretty much moot, as he’s full-time at Warner now.

  24. AllenTX, I think Kelly said at one point she may release early next year so she may not be in the mix this fall.

Thanks for the info. That sucks, she’s actually the only one I look forward to. I just listened to bunch of her demos the other day, Love in These Eyes is brilliant. It really gets me all excited.

  25. Sigh… I really do hope we get a DC album in 2010… but you may be right…

I try not to even think about it. I know it can’t happen overnight, but it seems to be taking f-o-r-e-v-e-r. At this rate, Adam’s second album may come out before DC’s.

I am happy that Lee’s date changed though. I think November will be far more advantageous for him than October.

  26. Call me naive, but what’s wrong with Robert Cavallo? He seems like a pretty prolific and successful producer to me.

He produced all of Cook’s album and a few tracks on Lambert’s. It is often considered, at least among those artists’ fans, to be less than his best work.

Yes, that’s what I mean, personally, I don’t like his work on either album. Over produced and MOR.

  27. I hope Lee can get a couple songs that he wrote before Idol (Worth Waiting, for example) at least as bonus tracks. He has good material that could benefit from the magic of a fancy recording studio. They are pushing him as a singer-songwriter, so maybe his album will reflect that in some way.

As far as what to expect, he’s said a mix of rock, folk, pop, and blues(?) I believe. It’s going to be interesting to see if he can maintain his AI fans through the debut record. I can imagine not many screechy teeny boppers are into Dave Matthews or Ben Harper.

  28. Reminder:

It hasn’t completely drifted yet, but just a reminder to keep this thread focused on Lee DeWyze.

  29. As far as what to expect, he’s said a mix of rock, folk, pop, and blues(?) I believe. It’s going to be interesting to see if he can maintain his AI fans through the debut record.

Well that sounds like an interesting mix, I might actually enjoy something like that. Teenyboppers be damned!

  30. He produced all of Cook’s album and a few tracks on Lambert’s. It is often considered, at least among those artists’ fans, to be less than his best work. But it’s pretty much moot, as he’s full-time at Warner now.

Hmm, good to know. I’ve not heard either Cook’s nor Adam’s albums, so I can’t judge. I’m sure 19/Sony had good intentions when they recruited him tho work on those Idol albums.

As far as Lee, he had some stiff competition with his original drop date, and that hasn’t changed with his new one. although I’m not really a fan of his style, I do hope he can put out something stellar and make his mark, at the very least for the reputation of Idol.

  31. I hope Lee can get a couple songs that he wrote before Idol (Worth Waiting, for example) at least as bonus tracks. He has good material that could benefit from the magic of a fancy recording studio.

Was this Worth Waiting song on one of his existing albums though? Cuz wouldn’t that stuff be owned by that record label?

  32. I am thinking that Worth Waiting has been recorded by Lee but it did not make it onto either of his pre idol cds. Lee needs a publishing deal.

  33. Worth Waiting isn’t on a previous album. There’s a studio recording of it floating around somewhere, but it’s a bit old-fashioned in the way it was produced. And there’s also some creepy kids singing in the end lol. So I hope if he likes the song enough, he’ll try to improve on it.

As far as WuLi having control over pre-idol music, I don’t think they can control any of his work that wasn’t on the previous 2 albums but I could be wrong. I assumed he may or may not use the old stuff, and WuLi will churn out a 3rd cd with the leftovers if they think it’s worth it.

See, it’s because they mentioned churning out a 3rd CD with Lee’s leftovers that makes me think they must own even the pre-Idol demo stuff that didn’t make the first two albums. Which is why I don’t think any old demos floating around would make the RCA record… just my take.

    Reminder:
It hasn’t completely drifted yet, but just a reminder to keep this thread focused on Lee DeWyze.

Heh. I actually peeked here to see whether the Cook fandom angst had seeped in and sure enough.

I think the move to the later date will help Lee out a lot because it’s closer to the Thanksgiving weekend and around the time when people are starting to hit stores for holiday shopping.

By the way, does anyone know what other artists are dropping the same day as Lee? It’d be interesting to see which artists he’ll be competing with on his album release week — or more likely, which artists will bring in foot traffic that might also end up picking up a copy of Lee’s album. I recall that around the time of Cook’s album release, Nickelback was the #1 non-AI artist who was listed in the section titled: “Customers who bought this item (Cook’s CD) also bought this.” I really do think that releasing at the same time as NB helped Cook during his release week. Hopefully, synergies like that will also help other AI’ers like Lee.

  36. I am looking forward to his album, looks like I will have to wait longer! :(

Seems like I recall reading somewhere that Lee said maybe a few pre-idol songs might make the album…anyone remember?

  37. Lee, please consider a song I’ve written for you. It’s called “Paint Salesman Blues”, and should be performed in the style of John Lee Hooker…

So, I tried out for American Idol
    BA-NA-NA-NA!
Got the Golden ticket to go through
    BA-NA-NA-NA!
    Headed on out to Hollywood
    BA-NA-NA-NA!
And made it past the next round, too
    BA-NA-NA-NA!
And then I sailed on off
    BA-NA-NA-NA!
    To the Top Twenty Four
    BA-NA-NA-NA!
    Little… did… I… know… what… I… was… about… to… be… in for…

    (extended blues harmonica solo)

    BA-NA-NA-NA!
    So on I still went
    BA-NA-NA-NA!
All the way to the final two
    BA-NA-NA-NA!
It was here that I got my first sour taste
    BA-NA-NA-NA!
    Of them Paint Salesman Blues
    BA-NA-NA-NA!
    Paint salesman blues…
    BA-NA-NA-NA!
    So, so, blue…
    BA-NA-NA-NA!
    mmmmmm…hmmmmm….
    BA-NA-NA-NA!
See, the producers done all felt
    BA-NA-NA-NA!
that the only way for me to win
    BA-NA-NA-NA!
wouldn’t be how strong I could belt
    BA-NA-NA-NA!
but how well they could spin
    BA-NA-NA-NA!
    This back story sop
    BA-NA-NA-NA!
    About me selling paint
    BA-NA-NA-NA!
Even though I begged them to stop
    BA-NA-NA-NA!
They’d repeat it again and again and again

    (extended blues harmonica solo)

    BA-NA-NA-NA!
The big man might have been right
    BA-NA-NA-NA!
‘Cause the title done became mine
    BA-NA-NA-NA!
But I just might have to kill the next fool
    BA-NA-NA-NA!
Who brings up that damn paint store one more time

    (Final blues harp breakdown)

    Ohhhhhhh…..yeah……

  38. Lee said maybe a few pre-idol songs might make the album

In countless interviews, he’s said he “brought stuff to the table” which could mean anything really. In one interview (can’t remember which one either! lol) when asked if any pre-idol songs would make the record, he didn’t say no which made me curious. I’ll have to find the interview again. It’s probably one from the LA press day.

  39. negativo LOL! love the ending to your Lee song. He probably does feel like punching people by now for bringing up his paint selling past because he was/is so much more than that.

Never There is one song I wish Lee could have used on his new album.

  40. By the way, does anyone know what other artists are dropping the same day as Lee? It’d be interesting to see which artists he’ll be competing with on his album release week — or more likely, which artists will bring in foot traffic that might also end up picking up a copy of Lee’s album.

So far Kanye and Rascal Flatts are the slated to drop on 11/16, but this far out, everything is subject to change. I don’t see too much foot traffic from Kanye and Rascal Flatts fans checking out a Lee Dewyze album. Though you never know. Both have performed on AI. I could see a lot of Rascal Flatts fans who like Idol. I love Kanye and I like Idol.

  41. Great to hear something at least about Lee’s album, the last few days I’ve been feeling restless about the “no news”, realising the tour will soon be over. Even if I have to wait until November for it!

    wmjtv said earlier:

I get a vibe from him that he likes holding back surprises, so it wouldn’t surprise me if it was his idea not to talk about his co-writers. Just like I won’t be surprised if he whips out an original at his hometown Idol concert.

There’s a recent news story out of Chicago http://www.dailyherald.com/story/?id=401921 which says:

He’s looking forward to his return to Chicago when the tour stops at the United Center for an Aug. 28 concert.

“I can’t wait,” the 24-year-old said. “I can’t talk to my friends and family and fans much at all because I’m so busy. But I guarantee them something special when I get home. I haven’t forgotten them.”

Lots of ways this could be taken, maybe a pre-idol original (as Crystal will do at Toledo) – or a preview of the single? Wishful thinking, I know!

  42. negativo:

Lee, please consider a song I’ve written for you. It’s called “Pain Salesman Blues”,

LMAO!!! Was “Pain” a typo?….well, Simon was making it into Pain selling blues, but it sold. Sometimes a blessing turns into a curse. Hopefully Lee won´t have to deal with it for much longer. Couldn´t you fit something about inhaling paint fume into your bluesy tune? Seriously, if Lee included those lyrics into a song, he´d win me over and I´d buy his CD

  43. Keel, it is a little early for the November release calendar to fill up, so we should get a better idea of what will drop then in the coming weeks.

Imkhemari, thanks for the link. I would think if Crystal is allowed to do one original song at her homecoming concert that Lee would be allowed the same latitude. But we’ll see, we all know how tight of a ship Idol runs.

I recall at one point there was an interview with the guys from Wuli and they said that Lee was submitting some of the unreleased songs from them for this record. I would think that yes they own the material but if the relationship is good there that they would be ok with it. I also wouldn’t that third unreleased album at some point but it would be smart not to interfere with the major album drop.

  44. Ha ha negativo, but I’m waiting for your follow up song, “I Dread Crystal’s Dreds.” Any idea when we can expect that one from you?

  45. Lots of ways this could be taken, maybe a pre-idol original (as Crystal will do at Toledo) – or a preview of the single?

If they allow Lee to do something from the new album, they must be smoking the good stuff. Lol. If he goes with an original, I could see him singing So I’m Told in Chicago. It’s short and simple but it fits the journey he’s been on:

    Hey
Why don’t do what anybody else would?
Go about it the familiar way
    A one-way ticket to LA

    And people keep on saying
    That I belong in California
    But I’m fine here

    I don’t think that I could fly
Maybe a train or I’ll just drive
    I like it here
The sky is blue and the air is clear

    And people keep on saying
    That I belong in California
    But I’m fine here

Don’t listen to what they say
Cause you could go about it
    Mmm your own way

    And people keep on saying
    That I belong in California
    But I’m fine here
    I’m fine here

  46. Seems like I recall reading somewhere that Lee said maybe a few pre-idol songs might make the album…anyone remember?

Yes, he did say that recently, I think sometime during an interview while in California.

I’d like to see another version of “Never There” on his album. I hope he still retains rights to it. It’s such an incredible song but Wuli’s production is a little rough still.

This is a good move and I completely expected it. Kings of Leon, another label mate, has an October 19 drop date. Taylor Swift has an October 25 drop date. It will be good for Lee’s to be a few weeks out from these two dates.

  47. I can’t stop listening to Never There, hard to believe it did not make either of his albums! (maybe it was for his 3rd album)

  48. Never There must have been for the 3rd cd release by WuLi. It does not seem to fit with the songs on either of the other two cds. It is a great song that needs a little better production, I agree.

If they allow Lee to do something from the new album, they must be smoking the good stuff. Lol. If he goes with an original, I could see him singing So I’m Told in Chicago. It’s short and simple but it fits the journey he’s been on

I’d vote for Sweet Sweet for him to sing in Chicago.

  49. Sweet sweet in Chicago would certainly fit with the rest of his Idol Tour set.

But I have a little fantasy – if it was Never There it could hit a trifecta – original, pre-idol, and yet to be released on either label!

  50. Sweet Sweet is my second favorite song. It’s a great upbeat song that, I agree, would be a good fit on his set.

If Never There doesn’t see the light of day, it will be a travesty. I LOVE it!

  51. Whatever song he sings (if he adds a song to his set) he’ll have to give it the Princess treatment, and turn up the volume to 11. I can see the Princess reprisal and Never There as stadium fillers, so I’m not worried about him in that regard.

I would be very surprised if he sang any of his originals the way they were recorded. For example Sweet Sweet. I love that song, particularly the chorus, but I’ve heard people complain it sounded “too country”. It would probably scare away any of his fans that had no idea he had folksy-rock leanings lol.

If he sang Flowerchild, I would just explode with happiness. But I don’t think he could go up on stage and call himself a flower in front of thousands of people. Lol.

  52. Speaking of Lee’s originals from his first two CD’s, one that I think is really underrated is “The Problem Is You.” I just find that one a real overlooked gem that is hardly ever mentioned by any Lee fans, maybe I’m one of the few fans who like it?

And if anybody knows, I’d love to know who the female singer is who duets with Lee on it.

  53. I dug up the video! When asked if any of his originals will be incorporated into the album, he says “I’ve brought some things to the table that we’re gonna be going with.” So that answers that question :)

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s347ptleJ30

The Problem is You is a great song but I get the sense that So I’m Told isn’t as popular as Slumberland. The album has a very diamond-in-the-rough quality to it.

  54. I’m sure So I’m Told isn’t as popular as Slumberland. And you’re right, it does have a very “diamond in the rough” type quality to it. Which for me makes the fact that Lee was all of 20 or 21 when he composed the songs on it (including The Problem Is You) all that more impressive.

  55. The entire album has beautiful lyrics, to be sure. I love Dreaming Alone. It’s haunting in a way. I hope he can combine the brilliant lyrics with the catchy melodies and make a great album. I know I’ll love it, but I also want him to win over some new fans.

  56. Thanks Cristististi! I remember now because when I was watching it I could not get over how blue his eyes were with that hat! :)

  57. woohoo! later release date means he gets to spend more time on it! :) srsly cant wait for this album to land. agreed cristististi.

  58. Imagination and Dreaming Alone are my favorites from SIT.

As far as Sweet Sweet having a folk/country feel Lee could give it a makeover if he thinks he needs to so that it will go over well on stage.
Does anyone know where to find the lyrics for Never There?

  59. Powter48:

And if anybody knows, I’d love to know who the female singer is who duets with Lee on it.

I’m an old woman and my mind isn’t what it used to be, but I remember reading somewhere that the wife of one of WuLi’s owners (I think Mr. Svitak) sang backup on some (all?) of the songs. But that’s all I’ve got.

My money is on “Princess,” if he does an original in Chicago. That one seems to be the crowd fave around here, especially with the Cute Girl Contingent (which I get the impression is a demographic he’s particularly concerned with ;)).

  60. I am glad that it’s pushed out – which means Lee will have more time to tweak the songs to his liking. I believe Wuli’s Louise S. mentioned something about Lee being very hands-on on every aspect of the album-making process ( album cover included). Not sure how much say he has with RCA/19 though but from his interviews, he did mention writing or co-writing in all songs so far.

I really really hope Never There will be included or the homecoming version of Worth Waiting.
    November 16!!!

  61. I remember know because when I was watching it I could not get over how blue his eyes were with that hat!

Those blue eyes are the reason I barely remember anything about that interview. They were so distracting…in a good way.

Does anyone know where to find the lyrics for Never There?

I’ve looked. I’ve seen a couple of people give it a go but they didn’t get it quite right. I should try to write it down…God knows I’ve listened to it enough times. BTW, I’d love it if we could get the lyrics from him but unless he’s going to re-record that song, I doubt he would take the time right now.

  62. I really really hope Never There will be included or the homecoming version of Worth Waiting.

I actually have the mp3s of Never There, Worth Waiting and my faves from his homecoming, so I’m not too concerned with those lol. But I hope he puts a new spin on whichever oldies he chose for his new album. He seems pretty good at creating medleys, there’s one on youtube that I love a lot, so he seems pretty good at switching things up.

I’ll give a go at Never There. He slurrs his words so it’s a bit of a challenge at times!:

    (You never know…)
    You never know
All the things we didn’t say
We both know that it shouldn’t be that way
And I believed (and I believed)
    In everything you’ve ever said
Just walk away (just walk away)
    You were my last regret

    You seem to disappear
And all the thoughts and memories
The things you whispered in my ear I push away
    Everything I’ve ever loved
And after all this time it’s very very clear
    That you were never here

    Keep the lies
The truth is all that you have left behind (left behind)
    You forgot yourself
I walked away to live, to love, to breathe another day
And all I need for you to do

    You seem to disappear
And all the thoughts and memories
The things you whispered in my ear I push away
    Everything I’ve ever loved
And after all this time it’s very very clear
    That you were never here

I needed to find an alternative to you
    I think I did…
The only living proof is in my head
And once your better off, you’re better off (well your better off)
And all I need for you to do…

    (Kickass guitar solo… lol)

    But you were never here…
    You were never here

  63. I’m posting this here as well as the Evening Headlines thread so everything’s in one place:

Re Lee talking about songwriters he admires there was an interesting article from AHN 2 weeks ago http://www.allheadlinenews.com/articles/7019519248.

Following “Idol,” winners are afforded some of the best songwriters and collaborators in the business. Kris Allen scored Pat Monahan of Train and Jon Foreman of Switchfoot, Adam Lambert had songs written by Lady Gaga and Pink. DeWyze lists James Morrison and Jason Mraz as influences for his sound and who we would to collaborate with.

Unfortunately the article doesn’t seem to have been proofread, the bolded part is nonsense. Most likely it should read “who he would like to collaborate with”, but, set in the context of the first 2 sentences it could indicate something more!

Also Lee was asked about what would happen in Chicago on twitter tonight. His reply:

LeeDeWyze: @jamielynn72082 guys the Chicago show is going to be off the chain, are any of you going?

Definitely sounds a little more than just an ordinary hometown concert so here’s hoping for something special!

Also WuLi had a few YouTube versions of Never There taken down just after it first was available, but several have re-emerged, some with lyrics – search Youtube to find them!

  64. I’m so looking forward to the album but don’t mind if he takes time with it. A rush job is never too good. I’m hoping Wu Li would have enough materials to release a 3rd album as well. Hoping for originals in his hometown show too. My choice would be Never There. I’m totally hook to that song. In Lee’s words, its going to kick ass. Haha.

  65. I am very excited for Lee’s album. I agree that Never There is a great song, but not sure if it will make his album since Wuli seems to want to make their own album of Lee’s pre-idol unrecorded materials. We’ll see…..

  66. So far, I have only bought Slumberland, you guys make me feel like trying ‘So I am Told’.

It’s nice that the press release mentions that he is a songwriter, and I really hope it bodes well for the direction of his new album.

I am under the impression that Wuli owns Lee’s recorded pre-idol material, so I doubt that anything from it will be released by Sony. But he may have written other good songs that never surfaced anywhere, and these songs could make his new album.

  67. This is a quote about the album during an interview with the Chicago Daily Herald dated 8-19-2001: “I’m so excited to do my own thing,” DeWyze said. “The album, the songs have my own vibe. I would say it sounds like Jack Johnson a little and maybe some Ben Harper.”

  68. cristististi. Thanks for sharing the lyrics of Never There ( I couldn’t get enough of this song. Just one of those songs that sticks to your head once you listen to it).

So, 87 days ( and counting down)…. seems like a long wait but I am so looking forward to Lee’s new album. I have seen his work evolved from So I’m Told to Slumberland, his idol stint, then the concert tour and seeing him and his music grow has been, in Lee’s word, amazing.

  69. Springboard, you must listen to So I’m Told. Its baby steps for Lee and is a more mellow vibe compared to Slumberland but if you listen to it for what it is – baby steps, you will find that it is alsolutley gorgeous. I’ve also read that Predicament is written about the war and the Problem with you is about his experience on the trading floor, Mr G is about a man he met. It took me a few listens, but after that, I’m completely in love with the album. You can also hear how much he has evolved in terms of his writing and musical interpretation ability and I completely agree with rivermaya, it is amazing. The guy is just talent.

  70. Jennyl, you got me me convinced. I just ordered so I’m told from amazon:)

  71. So I’m Told is more of a “grower” than Slumberland, but eventually you come to appreciate what it has to offer in it’s own way just as much as the later album(and I love both of them by the way).

  72. Don’t know if am going to like this CD or not….Will have to decide when it comes out.

  73. I am under the impression that Wuli owns Lee’s recorded pre-idol material, so I doubt that anything from it will be released by Sony. But he may have written other good songs that never surfaced anywhere, and these songs could make his new album.

Exactly. This is one of the reasons I seriously, seriously doubt they would put Never There on the new RCA album. WuLi clearly has the rights to it, or they wouldn’t have put it on their website for free. And RCA won’t be using leftovers from an independent. If you want the single, I’m sorry to say this, but you’ll have to find a way to download it. Just give him a dollar the next time you see him.

Also, I’m assuming Lee has plenty of pre-idol songs we’ve never even heard of and that’s what’s going to be used for the album. The more I think about it, the more it makes sense for him to put out entirely new material. The diehards that wanted those recordings got them already. The fans that didn’t will love whatever he puts out anyway.

In the end, it depends on alotta things: the vibe of the album, which/how many bonus tracks he can have, and how good he is at negotiating. He seems pretty sincere when he says that RCA/19 like his writing style and are giving him free-reign (I’ll believe it when I hear the record, Lee) and the overall ponies-and-rainbows vibe of the album-making process.

  74. cristististi thanks for taking a stab at the lyrics. Glad you bought So I’m Told springboard you won’t regret it. I really hope for the new cd that Lee is getting the chance to collaborate with a few of his musical influences. That Chicago show is going to be something else. Wish i could go but I’ll be watching the tweets!

  75. I’m glad to see a few of you are now checking out So I’m Told. Dreaming Alone may be my favorite song on the album. A gorgeous song that is even more so on headphones and great lyrics.

I also agree that Lee probably has a great deal of material he’s already written that he did not record for WuLi. Or also Lee could be talking about a few songs he’s written solo since Idol. Either way it is exciting!

  76. thnx for the lyrics, cristististi. i love “I walked away to live, to love, to breathe another day” gorgeous line!
so excited for this album. hope WuLi releases another as well!

  77. erizin, springboard :) I am also very excited about his coming album.
