Predicting the Trends of ‹American Idol

TiVo has made watching commercials unnecessary. Is it now trying to make watching reality shows a thing of the past, too?

Last month, TiVo said it would predict the loser on …American Idol by using its own product, StopWatch, which monitors the fast-forwarding and rewinding patterns of 20, 000 anonymous subscribers to gauge viewers preferences.

The announcement signified yet another attempt to flout efforts by …American Idol to keep its voting results secret. Predictive Web sites already exist, like DialIdol, which calculates the frequency of busy signals on the show phone lines, and ZabaSearch, which tracks how often contestants names are entered into search engines.

Erosion in young audience shows cracks in `Idol’ future

The fevered response to the latest loopy Paula Abdul episode, where she judged a phantom performance, just goes to show how “American Idol” continues to dominate television in its seventh season.

Yet while “Idol” is still a hit, it’s no longer necessarily hip.

You can hear it in the lack of enthusiasm in 14-year-old Katharine Bohrs’ voice.

“Last year I was really into it, and the year before that, ” said the high school freshman from Brookline, Mass. “This year in the beginning I was, but then track started up and I have a lot of homework. It’s two hours long and I don’t have the time.”

“American Idol” singer’s next stop: Nashville

“You’re completely stressed out, no sleep, like you don’t have a brain at times, ” she said of her weeks competing in Hollywood, but now, for a while, it’s nice to be back with friends and family in tiny Selma, training and riding her beloved horses.

“It’s been a long road to get to where I am. I’ve been singing since I was 13. I’m happy I’m finally there, ” says Cook.

Grabbing up her momentum, Cook plans to take off to Nashville and see if she can sign to a record label and get her career in gear.

Her advice to blooming young artists: “Keep dreaming. You’ll eventually get where you want to go.”

Kristy Lee Cook greets hometown fans

It was easily the biggest thing that ever happened here.

“American Idol” seventh-place finisher Kristy Lee Cook came home and, ensconced at a table in front of Ray’s Food Place, she signed publicity pictures for thousands of fans, who stood in a line snaking around the parking lot and held up their kids to be photographed with her.

Cook, 24, didn’t sing, which is what won her fame on the Fox TV show, belting out “Rescue Me, ” “You’re No Good” and “God Bless the USA.”

Castro hometown visit tentatively set

The tentative plans are to host Castro’s return at The Harbor’s amphitheatre on Friday, May 9, at 4:30 p.m.

This of course assumes that Castro makes it through another round of competition, which is getting tighter as former contestant’s voters are realigning their loyalties down to the four remaining singers.

On Monday night, the Rockwall City Council will be taking action to prepare for the logistics and scheduling for the visit, which will actually begin on Thursday. Friday’s afternoon event is the only public event scheduled so far. The City is also planing to designate May 9 as “Jason Castro Day” in the City of Rockwall.

American Idol’s Michael Johns hates name-dropping

MICHAEL Johns doesn’t want to name-drop, but after rubbing shoulders with Demi Moore, Condoleezza Rice and Rupert Murdoch over the past month, it’s hard not to.
Since his shock eviction from American Idol last month, the Perth-born 29-year-old’s life has been a whirlwind of publicity and A-list parties.

Johns has performed and partied with Ashton Kutcher, Demi Moore and Cameron Diaz at a Saturday Night Live after-party.

He got the thumbs up from Rupert Murdoch at a party the Fox boss held for the Idols, while Murdoch’s wife Wendi passed on Nicole Kidman and Keith Urban’s best wishes to the fellow Aussie.
