Well, this sounds dubious. FOX is planning a two hour “Rocky Horror Picture Show” event to celebrate the cult movie’s 40th anniversary.
As we mark the 40th anniversary of The Rocky Horror Picture Show, Fox is prepping a remake of the cult classic. The two-hour taped event special, which is in development with a cast-contingent order, is executive produced by Gail Berman of The Jackal Group; the 1975 movie’s producer Lou Adler; and Kenny Ortega, who is set to direct and choreograph. Fox 21 TV Studios is producing.
Tentatively titled The Rocky Horror Picture Show Event, the project is described as a reimagining of the campy horror feature, which, 40 years after its release continues, to play in theaters around the world – the longest theatrical distribution frame for any film in history.
Rocky Horror, with it’s weekly midnight screenings and 70’s style memes, was a cultural phenomenon completely born of a particular time and place. Other than a couple of iconic musical numbers, it was actually a pretty terrible movie. The fun of Rocky Horror had EVERYTHING to do with going to the theater and watching the fan sideshow–kids dressing up in costume and acting out scenes and in-jokes. Recreating it for television outside of the original cultural context? Hm. Not feeling it.
Kenny Ortega, in case you need a refresher, directed Hocus Pocus, all three High School Musical movies, and the Michael Jackson This is It documentary.
What do you think? Would you watch a remake of the Rocky Horror Picture Show on TV?
