Headlines: David Cook’s Big Slick Raises 2 Mil, Walmart No Longer Attracts Big Stars

Big Slick 2018 rockets over $2 million, setting another record – It pays to have a hometown superhero. In 2018, that’s $2,099,787. By the end of the Big Slick Celebrity Weekend auction on a star-studded Saturday night — the finale of two jam-packed days of events to benefit Children’s Mercy hospital — the total broke $2 million for the first time since the annual fundraiser launched in 2010. It wasn’t just fun and games as they worked purse strings. Heartstrings were up for grabs, too. When David Cook of Blue Springs joined his fellow “American Idol” alum, Daughtry, for a stirring cover of Tom Petty’s “I Won’t Back Down,” it was clear Big Slick is here to stay in the fight against child cancer. – Read more at Kansas City.com

American Idol’s Catie Turner wows St. Andrew students with surprise concert – Middletown resident and “American Idol” top seven finisher Catie Turner returned Friday to where it all began for her, and the result was near bedlam as 690 students at St. Andrew Catholic School in Newtown Township excitedly lapped up every note of every song during a surprise concert at the school Turner attended from 2004 through 2013. Strumming on her acoustic guitar, Turner performed “Havana” by Camila Cabello, “Can’t Help Falling in Love With You” by Elvis Presley and her own composition she used for her American Idol audition, “21st Century Machine.” She closed with the Beatles’ “Let It Be,” the same song she belted out as a fifth-grader many years ago at the St. Andrew talent show, her first public performance. = Read more at the Intell.com

Pop stars no longer fight for billing at Walmart gig – Sprinkled among presentations about profit margins, Walmart employees have been privy to performances by stars at the peak of their fame, from Beyoncé to Taylor Swift to Britney Spears in 1999, after the release of her album Baby One More Time had catapulted her to chart-topping stardom. Attendees at the 2018 meeting on Friday could be forgiven their disappointment at a much less splashy line-up — but the reason lies in the changing landscape for music sales and the declining importance of hawking CDs through Walmart’s massive US chain of stores. Cassadee Pope, a country singer who six years ago won The Voice, the competition show, opened the party in front of the 14,000 Walmart employees and shareholders. She was followed by Carly Rae Jepsen, who hasn’t had a number one song since 2012’s “Call Me Maybe”. The headliner was Jason Derulo, a recognisable name but someone who has never quite reached the top tier of stars. – Read more at Financial Times
