American Idol 2023 Polls: Rate the Premiere, Best Performance

Lucy Love - American Idol 2023
(ABC/Eric McCandless) LUCY LOVE

The American Idol season 21 premiere is on the books! It’s a different season, but not much has changed. The judges–Lionel Richie, Katy Perry and Luke Bryan–are offering their usual schtick. Katy is the zany one, Luke is the mischievous little brother and Lionel is the wise papa.

The talent is the usual parade of emotional stories. There was so much crying tonight! But still, the night offered up some good talent.

American Idol literally chose the worst section of Haven Madison’s performance for the American Music Awards Platinum Ticket contest. If fans got a chance to watch the first half, or even the entire performance, she might have nabbed that ticket. All we got at the time were her big notes at the end, which were a little strained. That, in contrast to the first half of the performance that we finally saw on Idol and which she delivered with finesse.

The singer who DID get a Platinum Ticket this week, Tyson Venegas, is an interesting singer. Was he Platinum Ticket worthy? I’m not sure yet. But he does have a unique sound.

Great performances from tonight included R&B singers Lucy Love and Kya Monee. Kya’s performance of “I’m Here” dedicated to her late friend, Willie Spence, was an incredible display of vulnerability and emotion. Honorable mentions go to Colin Stough, Zachariah Smith and Iam Tongi. Speaking of Colin and Zachariah–could another male country singer win American Idol making it a three-peat (Chayce Beckham, Noah Thompson being the first two)? I hope not. Consider that a male country singer (Bryce Leatherwood) won the most recent season of The Voice, and really I’m ready for a different kind of voice to prevail on a singing show.

OK fans. It’s time to vote. Pick your favorite performance, and grade the episode!
