UPDATED: The Idol Pad has revealed that “Party Songs” will be the theme for the Top 11 show on Thursday.

We revealed last night that next Wednesday’s American Idol would be a combination Top 12 reveal and Wildcard show. Also, that one more contestant would be eliminated on Thursday. We didn’t have the details at the time, but now TVLine has more information on what you can expect next week.

Unfortunately, it’s not as exciting as we thought it would be.  The judges will choose two wildcards, but only from the contestants outside of the voter-chosen Top 10.

  • On Wednesday, March 11, Ryan Seacrest will reveal the five guys and five girls who advanced from this week’s Top 16 performances based on the public vote. The judges will name TWO wildcards. Unfortunately, it looks like the contestants who were eliminated prior will not be eligible. That sucks.
  • The Top 12 will reprise their audition songs for viewer votes. (TV Line notes that Caleb Johnson chose a second audition song that wasn’t aired. So that’s possible).
  • On Thursday, March 12, ONE contestant will be eliminated. The remaining 11 contestants will perform again for viewer votes.
  • The following Thursday, March 19 (No Idol on Wednesday March 18. It’s a two hour Empire season finale instead) ONE more elimination and the Top 10 will perform for viewer votes. It’s a two hour show.
  • Beginning Wednesday, March 25, Idol settles into a once a week, 2 hour format that combines performances and results.

What TV Line DIDN’T mention, is that Wednesday’s show will be taped on Tuesday morning in Hollywood.  Unless the producers decide to go live at the last minute or something, this is happening. Emails went out to folks on the On Camera Audiences list. We know somebody who will be there. We’ll keep you posted!

TV Line posted the aired audition songs from the eligible contestants.  The contestants will need to rehearse two songs for next week. Reprising audition songs cuts down on preparation time. It’s one thing to sing audition shows later on in the competition. It can be interesting to compare how far a singer has come during the competition. Singing competition songs at this point in the competition, however, seems a little redundant.
