American Idol 10 – Beatles Las Vegas & Green Mile – Recap

AMERICAN IDOL: Contestants perform Beatles songs on the Cirque du Soleil LOVE stage airing Wednesday, Feb. 23 (8:00-10:00 PM ET/PT). CR: Ray Mickshaw / FOX

All of that time and expense to pack up the kids and take them to Vegas, and we only got an hour and brief snippets of performances? I’m thinking that when Nigel and company sat down with the footage they realized it wasn’t that good.

Or, they felt they could do a better job of making sure we’re properly introduced to the Top 24 by spending 3 hours on the cuts.   In the past, the Green Mile show has been an hour long and it was plenty of time to produce a taught, drama filled show.  I don’t think I can sit through two more hours of contestants marching up that space-age runway (not sure I’m digging the new, uber-modern set) to learn their fate.   It’s going to be a long two hours tomorrow night.

As far as the singing we got to hear–I’m still feeling very optimistic about the coming season.  I think we’ve barely scratched the surface with some of these kids. I’m really looking forward to the weeks ahead. How about you?

Tonight’s American Idol episode expands to 2 hours beginning at 8/7c pm on FOX.  In the first hour, the remaining contestants (Check out the Top 61 HERE) tackle Beatle songs on the Cirque Du Soleil LOVE stage.

  • Unconfirmed Top 40 list HERE.

In the second hour, the judges begin to winnow down the Top 40 to the Top 24.  According to Joe’s Place, there was a “Sing For Your Life” round. The kids sang one last time before the judges made their final selections.

After the jump, my LIVE recap, videos and PHOTOS.

Photos, Recap, Videos after the JUMP…

The hopefuls must learn and perform a Beatles song in just 24 hours. In the second hour. THE FINAL JUDGMENT. Tears! Crying DRAMZ!!!!

Sixty-one remain. Their biggest challange is on the horizon! The bus is bound for Vegas, baby. The group divided up into duos and trios. 1/3 of them will be cut when the round concludes. At 10 am, the contestants are rehearsing, rehearsing, rehearsing.

Lauren Alaina is crying at her rehearsal. Everyone is becoming OVERWHELMED. This vocal coach, Peggy Blu is a BEYOTCH. Thia Megia BITCHFACE.

Enter Interscope’s Jimmy Iovine and his team of producers. He tells Lauren’s group that “If I Fell” is the wrong song.

“This is freaking out because Beatle land is where I exist” says Steven.

Jim Durbin and Stefano Langone – “Get Back” – Jim Durbin’s wallet chain bandanna and head scarves look ridic. Steven says he’s never heard such high voices together. Randy tells Stefano he started off slow but got it together. – VIDEO

Pia Toscano and Karen Rodriquez. “Can’t Buy Me Love” – They were buds in a NYC performing arts high school. Interesting. Karen miffed the words. “I feel like you guys get it, ” says Jennifer. “It built so well…then you took off and jumped the fences, ” says Steven. Both are pros. Good stuff – VIDEO

Naima Adedapo, Jacob Lusk, Haley Reinhart – “The Long and Winding Road” – Jimmy tells them not to OVERSING. Advice? Not taken. “Very very nice!” says Jennifer. Really good job. “That was stupendous, so over the top, ” says Steven. Randy undoes Jimmy’s advice, “Never hold back, ” says Randy.  Uh, maybe you should. – VIDEO

Rachel Zevita – “Eleanor Rigby” – I think I’m going to love me some quirky Rachel. Loved the widows veil she wore to great effect.  VIDEO

Lauren Turner – “Let it Be” – Lauren is one of the unseen. She’s got potential.  VIDEO

Tim Halperin and Julie Zorrilla – “Something” – Lovely rendition. The ladies are going to like Tim.  VIDEO

Jerome BellLakeisha LewisTatynisa Lewis “I Saw Her Standing There” – This is pretty awesome. Very soulful. Randy wasn’t crazy about Jerome.  Jlo thinks Lakeisha is holding back and that Tatynisa lacks vocal control.  Steven, on the other hand, thinks Tat nailed it. – VIDEO

Kendra Chantelle and Paul McDonald – “Blackbird” – Good thing Simon and his fear of birds are gone.  Paul has an interesting vibe. Unusual vocals.  Kendra is also very good Very nice. “The power of a soft beautiful tone, it cuts right through, ” says Jennifer about Paul.  “This was beautiful, really well done, ” says Steven.  “I loved your choices in the harmonies, ” says Randy. – VIDEO

A quick montage of groups sing “Help”, “Ticket to Ride”, “Help from my Friends” – VIDEO

Ashley Sullivan and her boyfriend get MARRIED. Oy. Was that the producers idea? Crazy.

Melinda Ademi and Thia Megia – “Here Comes the Sun” – It’s the PAGEANT BOT VERSION of this George Harrison classic. “You found a way to keep the phrasing intact.” “It was cute, but it wasn’t as strong as I thought it would be” “Melinda, you were behind on the phrasing, ” says Steven. – VIDEO

Ashley Sullivan and Sophia Shorai “We Can Work It Out” – “It wasn’t your best performance, ” says Steven. “None of it quite worked for me, ” says Randy. – VIDEO

Lauren Alaina, Denise Jackson and Scotty McCreery – “”Hello Goodbye” – Scotty sounds ridiculous. His voice sounds creepy singing anything other than those deep-voiced country tunes. “The song didn’t fit you guys. It was like the Marx brothers put out a fire thing, ” says Steven. LOL. Randy called it “Funny.” That’s one word I’d use. – VIDEO

Carson Higgins and Caleb Hawley – “Please Please Me” – Carson isn’t as good as he thinks he is.  This is an unfortunate pairing for poor Caleb who has been good in the past. – VIDEO

Casey Abrams and Chris Medina – “Hard Days Night”.  Steven calls them “Freaks.” I call them “Suck”. – VIDEO

Robbie Rosen, Aaron Sanders, Jordan Dorsey – “Got to Get You Into My Life” – “I was really impressed right there, ” says Randy. “Aaron you always surprise me when you come out. Jordan we have high expectations of you, ” says Jennifer. “Robbie, you nailed it again, ” says Steven. – VIDEO

Time for cuts!

Thia Magia, Scotty McCreery, Jordan Dorsey, Ashton Jones, Robbie Rosen, Lauren Alaina and James Durbin are through to the Top 40.

Molly DeWolf, Carson Higgins, Caleb Hawley, Denise Jackson, Melinda Ademi, Ashley Sullivan are heading home.

Credits again! IT’S A SEPARATE SHOW Y’ALL

The Green Mile has gone space age!

Here we go.

  • Naima Adedapo‘s final performance was “Put Your Records On”  She cries as she faces the judges. She’s questioning herself.  “I’m sorry that I have to say that…you’ve made it through, ” says Steven. She’s IN. Naimi told Jennifer that she wanted to be a fly girl when she was little. – VIDEO
  • Hollie Cavenagh – Final performance is  “No One”. Jennifer says she was a standout in Hollywood week. Hollie is very thankful. “Unfortunately, we’re not going to put you through this time.” Jennifer says she was OUTVOTED.  “You’re 17 years old. You could come back and win the whole thing.”  Hollie begins to cry.  “I don’t know if I can do this anymore, ” says Steven. –  She’s OUT – VIDEO
  • Lakeisha Lewis, Alex Ryan – OUT “You haven’t seen the last of me, ” says Lakeisha. Yeah, we probably have.
  • Clint Jun Gamboa – His final performance was “Hello”. In Hollywood he was MEAN TO JACEE.  Clint tries to explain away his asshattery in Hollywood. It’s not working.  But, unfortunately – He’s IN.  I can’t see him overcoming the villain edit. – VIDEO
  • Haley Reinhart – Her final song was…whatever the hell that was. Quoting Doris Day. DEEP.  This is her second try. She feels like she learned a lot. “We’re really afraid to say that…you’re a yes, ” says Steven. – She’s IN – VIDEO
  • Deandre Brackensick – His final song was accompanied on ukulele – Randy says, “It’s about being great everytime you get up there. You came close but not close enough. It’s the end of your journey.” Jennifer thinks he’s got a great chance to be a recording artist.  He’s OUT – VIDEO
  • Paul McDonald – He wore a crazy outfit for his final song, an original called “American Dreams”. See Paul’s pre-Idol stuff HERE.  “Is this guy material? It’s anyone unique.”  The judges keep stressing his “quirkiness”  – He’s IN – VIDEO
  • Ashthon Jones – Her final song was “I Want to Dance with Somebody” – “You have been one of the most consistent contestants.” They worried if she could put up with the pressure.  Jennifer tells her she made it. – She’s IN – VIDEO
  • Chris Medina – His final song? “I Will Try to Fix You” – UGH. He would have continued to milk this shit all the way through the competition. And he’s not that great a singer.  Jennifer says he started off strong. But he had some good and bad moments. “It breaks my heart to say this, but you did not make it into the Top 24.  So glad…  He’s OUT. Jennifer has a MELTDOWN. – VIDEO

Will Jennifer continue with the cuts? Or will Steven and Randy have to carry on without her. BITCH PLEASE. Bravo on that performance Jennifer. Lulz

  1. Anyone want to lay the odds that Paul McDonald will actually be seen in tonight’s epi?

  2. Ooh Peggy Blu is feisty!! Where did she come from? She should be a judge.

I’m glad they’re having the “Sing for Your Life” round, because groups are just not the best way to judge people IMO.

  3. Is it an hour or two?! Didn’t Ryan just say two? Lol I’m so tired.

  4. Is it an hour or two?! Didn’t Ryan just say two? Lol I’m so tired.

    It’s two hours.

  5. DAMN! They are not messing around this year. they are determined to get their superstar. Peggy Blu is the scariest person ever. She would make me cry lol . And Jimmy Iovine and his team were kind of intimidating too.

  6. Lovine doesn’t mess around!

These kids who don’t know who the Beatles are..ugh. Sad.

  7. I’m surprised they showed the harsh vocal coaches. I thought this was soft, fuzzy idol.

  8. sherimoonzombie:

I saw him for a second. Hoping they show him singing.

  9. The Beatles episode is supposed to be only one hour and there is now less than 46 minutes including the commercials left and we have not seen anyone sing.

  10. James’ last screech was way off pitch. Even more painful to listen to than usual.

  11. I’m really liking this, which surprises me. Though I’m cracking up at Ryan’s ominous voice overs.

  12. Karen and Pia <3 Rachel Zevita also went to high school with them lol.

  13. Yeah, so far very entertaining – go S10.

I’m kinda skeered of Iovine lol.

  14. Wow I liked Jacob Lusk for the first time tonight. He got very good advice about not oversinging.

  15. Thank you Jimmy for giving Jacob that piece of advice.. now have a chat with James.

  16. I’m surprised they showed the harsh vocal coaches. I thought this was soft, fuzzy idol.

Maybe they’re warm and fuzzy over people’s lame looks, but are willing to kick their musical asses. If so, I’m down with that.

  17. Lauren Turner is incredible. I can’t wait to hear more from her. Rachel is fantastic too. Very nice job by Jacob and Tim.

  18. I love how Randy gave Jacob just the opposite advice from Jimmy. Thanks Randy, but telling him not EVER to hold back is just about the stupidest thing you’ve ever said.

  19. TIM AND JULIE!! They were great.

I’m actually really impressed with (almost) everyone so far. Loving tonight’s episode.

  20. Some great performances :)
I particularly loved Rachel in the brief 10 seconds she got.

  21. Ruh roh. Tim’s pretty good singing + his vibe + idol voting patterns = confetti in May. :-(

  22. I love how Randy gave Jacob just the opposite advice from Jimmy. Thanks Randy, but telling him not EVER to hold back is just about the stupidest thing you’ve ever said.

    This.

  23. Pretty good so far, some I like better than others but I did not dislike anyone.

  24. Wow! The girls so far are incredible ! Lauren Turner was amazing! Loved Naima, Julie, Karen, and Rachel too! I think I’m going to LOVE this season.

I got to give credit to Tim too, he impressed me.

  25. Of course Randy would encourage oversinging. Ugh. Why is he still a judge?

  26. I really liked Tim’s voice. Julie was good too. And I really liked Naima

  27. Ruh roh. Tim’s pretty good singing + his vibe + idol voting patterns = confetti in May. :-(

Yep. Exactly what I thought. Tim’s this year’s WGWP.

  28. Good show so far. I thought the Jacob group was by far the worst so far. Not terrible, but the worst. I thought they oversang, and harmony was crap.

  29. Some really great harmonies. Are we sure they aren’t lip syncing? =p

  30. Ok, if this is the Paul McDonald everyone’s been dying to see, I’m not loving it.

  31. THey had just 24 hours to do this?
    I’m getting really excited.

  32. U and me webster. He sounds different than some of the pre idol stuff I listened to.

  33. Paul is quirky and different, but I don’t think that he’s got a very good voice. Not that it matters much to be a Top 40 star.

  34. I know from youtube that Paul can belt, but the restrained vocal was so gorgeous.

Paul just might be my favorite. The end.

  35. I fervently hope that this Beatles round means we won’t have to endure another Beatles night during the finals, Nigel. They have been played out on Idol.

  36. Oh good. If Ashley doesn’t make it, now there will be someone to make sure that she doesn’t kill herself.

  37. I am very impressed so far. Nigel is definitely worth his weight.

  38. That guy has to be OUT OF HIS MIND to marry Ashley! LOL What a life he has ahead of him.

  39. LMAO!!!!!!!!!!!!! Ashley sullivan. I guess there is someone crazy enough to marry her.

  40. will:

That guy has to be OUT OF HIS MIND to marry Ashley! LOL What a life he has ahead of him.

Probably a dim bulb. I like weird, but she surpasses even my tolerance level.

  41. fuzzywuzzy:

Oh good. If Ashley doesn’t make it, now there will be someone to make sure that she doesn’t kill herself.

    Wow

  42. So far, this show is really entertaining. No one looks terrified and like they just vomitted (or are about to).

  43. They totally wasted the fact that they have a hotel full of wedding singers willing to expose themselves.

  44. I’m really impressed with the talent this year.

    Ashley Sullivan is very wierd.

  45. hmmmm nigel.. those 15 year olds not quite playing out as you expected huh?

  46. did they say why some are doing solos and some are in groups?

They are all in groups. They are only showing one person from some groups though.

  47. Thats what I was thinking. gangreen29.

Scotty… LOL Good for him.. he’s really trying.

  48. Lol. I don’t usually watch this stage of the show. Is it always like this? Even the “good” ones seem like train wrecks to me :)

  49. I just don’t understand why Lauren Alaina is being pimped so hard. I would have liked to see more than 5 seconds of Caleb and Carson.

  50. Chris did his best in his audition, and it’s been all downhill since then.

  51. Chris Medina was just off-key. I wasn’t impressed with Scotty, Denise, or Lauren. OK why the hell are they pimping Lauren alaina when they should be pimiping Lauren Turner. That girl is amazing. But I have to say, it’s an entertaining show so far. the contestants are actually performing.

  52. If Medina makes the Top 24, which I’m very fearful he will, it will forever disprove the canard about this being a “singing competition.”

  53. LoL Scotty. More fool than tool, and I mean that in the vest possible way. Somebody needs to make an animated character of him, because he’s already done all the hard work.

  54. There isn’t as much filler in this episode like usual! Really impressed with this year’s talent.

  55. I didn’t like Mollie’s attitude. IF getting cut from idol means singing is just something you can do on the side then you will never make it and it was good to cut you.

  56. Robbie continues to impress me. The guy is always on pitch. I was also impressed with that aaron guy, he was so much better then Jordin dorsey.

Ashley and carson took their cuts really well. class acts.

  57. Robbie continues to impress me. The guy is always on pitch. I was also impressed with that aaron guy, he was so much better then Jordin dorsey.

Ashley and carson took their cuts really well. class acts.

Agreed on all accounts. I am really starting to think of Robbie as a dark horse.

  58. Am I the only one that thinks that singing 4-5-6 times is a bit much? Or is this a ploy to keep the stories going and the audience coming back? Must be, but it’s better than that “sing for your life” some years back. Which was ridiculous and that was when I turned off Idol. Now I’m back.

I just saw the crying scene with JLO….it’s a good thing she has a one year contract. Because if she can’t say no, then she’s not meant to be there.

  59. Ashley took being sent home really well. I’m sure that the producers are disappointed.

  60. Am I the only one that thinks that singing 4-5-6 times is a bit much? Or is this a ploy to keep the stories going and the audience coming back? Must be, but it’s better than that “sing for your life” some years back. Which was ridiculous and that was when I turned off Idol. Now I’m back.

Why would you ever want them to sing less? It’s a singing show..

  61. You can tell that these were meant to be two separate 1 hour shows.

  62. I think Naima is terrific, I think she has a lot of star quality already.

  63. lol where the hell are they?

They look like they’re in an airplane hanger. lol

  64. I hope they put more of the SFYL and less of the crying in the edit of the next contestants

  65. If it’s Jenny’s breakdown Ryan’s referring to, yes we could predict it, we’ve only seen it 20 times.

  66. If they give each of the 24 a package like Naima where they show their sing for their life it is kind of like the intro show Nigel did for SYTYCD

  67. They look like they are walking up to the mother ship haha. It’s crazy! Love Naima, glad she is in!

  68. Glad to have a different green mile venue. Looks like Steven invited them all onto his mother ship.

  69. They look like they’re in an airplane hanger. lol

It looks more like an empty sound stage on the studio lot. They converted it into the “Lost in Space” set.

  70. Ashley took being sent home really well.

What would you expect? She’s wanted to go home since the beginning of Hollywood week.

  71. I must say, I’m totally loving Idol this season! Seems faster paced while (it seems like) showing more singing. And waaaay better singers than S9. Go Nigel!

  72. Loving the show tonight – so much drama and talent.

The other thing I noticed that I really like is that they are clearly auditioning them for different aspects of the show.

    1. How well they work with vocal coaches / professionals
    2. How well they perform on a big stage – do they stand out or fade.
    3. The judges get to practice critiquing after a performance again
    4. Ryan’s Coke room interviews give producers a chance to see who will be able to show charisma when being interviewed and give them time to practice.

    All good ideas!

Lol at the elevator being replaced by a dark walkway in a hangar.

    Also yay for Naima!

  73. Maybe they’re warm and fuzzy over people’s lame looks, but are willing to kick their musical asses. If so, I’m down with that.

    Amen, Webster!

  74. I really loved Hollie’s voice, I’m disapointed that she wasn’t put through

  75. Holly is good, but I think that they are right about her coming back in a couple of years and doing really well.

  76. Does this seep over into tomorrow? Was wondering too what will be left!

  77. Can they come back and audition again after going through to the last round? Did they change the rules?
I like that JLO is really sincere.

  78. It’s frustrating to see these people cut when we didn’t see them performing.

  79. Hollie came across as so sweet and normal in those last moments.

  80. Hey Nigel, I just had a brilliant idea. Make Cher’s “You Haven’t Seen the Last of Me” the new boot song! You’re welcome.

  81. Clint came across like a total fake to me about Lekeisha. I may be wrong, but I didn’t buy it. and him screeching at me in Hollywood reminded me why I didn’t like his voice.

  82. LOL they’re cutting people who I’ve never even seen until today

I think it’s very logical to focus on the ones who make the Top 24. There’s only so much airtime.

  83. No denying Clint’s voice..but he is never going to live down kicking Jaycee out of the group round…

  84. The extra singing bits are awesome. This is so much better than it used to be, as long as they keep the sobbing to a minimum

  85. I find Clint very annoying and fake. I really hope that Holly does come back in a couple of years. This experience will help her a lot. She’s good.

  86. Would anyone know if the rules were changed and those who are cut at this level can re-audition next year?

  87. Is Steven’s new bleep symbol a little explosion? If so, I approve.

  88. Billboarddotcom: Clint Jun Gamboa is in the top 24, but so far he’s still known as the dude who rejected Jacee Badeaux. #idol 1 minute ago via TweetDeck

  89. Would anyone know if the rules were changed and those who are cut at this level can re-audition next year?

    Yes they can.

  90. I think i’m the only one who doesn’t hate clint LOL. The guy has crazy vocals, so he deserved his spot in the Top 24 IMO.

  91. Marie Ruffin:

Would anyone know if the rules were changed and those who are cut at this level can re-audition next year?

They could come back, but I don’t think this was a change this year, I thought it’s if they don’t make the semifinals they could come back.

  92. i was disappointed for Hollie but I think it’s the right decision to let her grow. She’s to watch in a couple of years.
On the other hand, Clint, me no likey… Agree with you Valentin..lol

  93. Everybody get over Jaycee and Clint — please! Jaycee wouldn’t have fit his group. Period. And let’s face it, it’s about compatibility in looks and sound.

  94. Would anyone know if the rules were changed and those who are cut at this level can re-audition next year?

They can also be given a fast-pass to skip the cattle call and go directly in front of the judges next season.

  95. OMG Deandre is gorgeous! and he sings like an angel. I hate that they cut him….the girls would love him!
If Jlo sees him as a recording artist, why didn’t they pass him through? Not fair.
He reminds me of Casey James last year.

  96. After all that hype and crying about DeAndre not making it he wasn’t even that good lol.

  97. Deandre is adorable. And better than some who got through. Why did they cut him?

  98. I really wonder if Deandre and Hollie would wait for Idol or if they are going for X factor instead, they alrady have some beginning of a fanbase.

  99. yeah. i totally get why jacee has been dropped by Clint’s group. but, there;s just something unlikable about Clint i can’t figure out what exactly.

  100. Losing Deandre – what a shame. Why? Gorgeous, great voice…go figure. Girls would have loved him.

  101. Mary: I agree. Maybe it was his youth? They’re cutting a lot of 15 and 16 yo.

This is like the Grammys. They get a bunch of 15-16 yo with talent to audition, put them through and then cut them. It’s like they’re trying to get the young audience to watch for the teens and then — zip. Cruel.

  102. DeAndre is my favorite boy. I just don’t get it. Over Clint? And Hollie is so much better than Haley.

  103. Deandre should def come back next year. I would have put him thru over Jordan, CLint, or the flamboyant black guy…

  104. Would anyone know if the rules were changed and those who are cut at this level can re-audition next year?

Yes, as they’ve made very clear tonight, they can come back unless they make the Top 24.

  105. Clint may be the S10 Todrick. If he gives a good performance I’ll vote for him.

If James Durbin makes top 24 the Adam Lambert comparisons will be endless. Media might describe him as a clone.

  106. Does anyone know the rules about trying out for X-Factor. I guess some singers say they are trying out for X-Factor, but some say if you made top 40 you signed a contract that doesn’t end until August. DeAndre and Hollie should try out.

  107. I really wonder if Deandre and Hollie would wait for Idol or if they are going for X factor instead, they alrady have some beginning of a fanbase.

The top 40 all had to sign special contracts. They will be barred from trying out for X Factor.

Deandre was nothing special. Goes to show you the power of a cute boy over some though lol.

  108. I would have chosen Deandre over some other guys. Too bad. I hope he comes back next year, along with Hollie.

  109. Wait….what are they gonna do for tomorrow’s show?

They have only put three people in so far lol and there is only 18 minutes left. They will show the rest tomorrow.

  110. Losing Deandre – what a shame. Why? Gorgeous, great voice…go figure. Girls would have loved him.

I think that’s one of the reasons he was cut (along with his youth). I hate to see him go, but I guess they figure he can audition again next year. He could have been a threat to the female winner they so desperately want.

Paul McDonald: He’s cute, but his singing just doesn’t agree with me. Definately not my cup of tea.

  111. Could win: Paul McDonald WGWG alert***

    Fodder: Haley

    No Way: Clint

    Mid Pack: Naima, Ashton

From what I’ve seen tonight (haven’t watched the first hour or last week’s show).

  112. Deandre was Jason Castro 2.0

Yeah, only not as stoned looking or together vocally.

  113. I like Paul…I can hear him on the radio…got a very original voice…his tone is flawless

  114. They have only put three people in so far lol and there is only 18 minutes left. They will show the rest tomorrow.

Cool. I didn’t think that they’d do walk/interview features for the entire top 24 contestants.

  115. They have only put three people in so far lol and there is only 18 minutes left. They will show the rest tomorrow.

Hmm, Ryan’s teases repeatedly promised the Top 24 would be revealed tonight. Bait and switch.

  116. Make that “Paul McDonald sounds like ROD Stewart.” LOL.

Yeah, I’m gonna call it. He is totally top five.

  117. The only thing I really don’t like about Paul is he has that goat vibrato thing going at times. Drove me crazy with Casey last year doing that.

  118. Ashton is really good. Do these people realize how much TV time they’re getting. It’s priceless.

    OOOHHH…Steven is really quiet. Why?

  119. Hmmm. I’m having a weird reaction to the show. In general, I think the talent is good and the production is much better than before. But I don’t see anyone yet that I’m at all interested in voting for.

  120. I have to admit that Jennifer is doing a very good job tonight, she’s surprisingly eloquent.

  121. will:
    02/23/2011 at 9:48 pm

I have o admit that Jennifer is doing a very good job tonight, she’s surprisingly eloquent.

I agree. Why is Steven so quiet and serious?

  122. OK I’m gonna say this, I think Paul Mcdonald = Winner. He’s a WGWG but he has charisma, and I enjoyed his song.
I LOVE Ashthon ! I want her to make it to the Top 12 so bad. I agree with the judges that she is the whole package.

  123. So far, I’m most impressed with Paul and Ashton. I’ve decided to forgive her for singing the dreaded and dreadful I Wanna Dance With Somebody. But I hope she doesn’t pull out Against All Odds.

  124. I think Paul has the most potential so far. He reminds me of the guys in Lady A. and he should get lots of votes from the ladies. He’s a lock for Top 13 at a minimum.

  125. Oh good. They were very tasteful about showing Juliana. Chris just isn’t good, IMO. They are spending too much time on him.

  126. Paul reminds me a lot of Ray LaMontagne, a guy who I think is madly talented but whose voice I just can’t stand.

  127. That was tough, but they did the right thing. Why are they letting JLo do all of the dirty work?

  128. Hmmm….they’re giving Chris Medina a lot of screen time….now here comes Jlo and the tears….girl snap out of it!

  129. Can some of these people being sent home be chosen as wild cards? If so, how many will they choose?

  130. Can some of these people being sent home be chosen as wild cards? If so, how many will they choose?

    No

  131. Awww man. Jennifer didn’t make it :( She can try out again next year though

  132. I’m a fan of Clint’s talent, but not Clint’s personality. That said, I don’t think he’s half as nasty as Jordan Dorsey who made folks audition for him!! There’s confidence and then there’s arrogance. It surprises me that people (generally, not just here) aren’t as disgusted with Jordan as they are with Clint. Regardless, I think Clint’s going far and we’ll have to suffer him for awhile. No denying he’s got talent.

IMO, Tim and Julie were the best tonight of the groups, followed by Kendra and Paul. Deandre should have been put through. Chris needed to go, but I thought he handled the news graciously. I’m pretty much over James Durbin. Of the girls, I think Haley is strongest..so far.

Just waiting on the fates of my favorites Stefano, Jacob and Tim.

JLo and Steven have redeemed AI. That’s how it should have been done all along.

  133. My faith in this show has been restored. And Chris talking about his wife at this stage was SO inappropriate!

Now just get rid of James Durbin tomorrow night please!

    Jeez get a grip Jenny.

  134. Ashton has a great booty, but I can tell she’s gonna bug me. Sigh. She reminds me of Syesha – the big voiced but gorgeous diva thing.

And Chris Medina’s story magically becomes about Jennifer!

  135. The Chris cut wasn’t as bad as I feared they’d make it. Maybe he can make it as a songwriter. He’s a mediocre singer, but I think he’s a good man.

    And Steven is a gentleman.

  136. Please somebody stop Jennifer from crying….she’s on a one year contract, maybe she won’t be coming back next year? That would be controversy.

  137. Paul also reminded me of Rod Steward and as the main problem today is that many singers sounds the same as Paul has a distintive voice if he make is through the first round of voting he could go far. Deandre is adorable and probably would have gotten lots of votes and yes he could record but not necessarily for the mainstream market. They don’t want another winner being outsold by runners-up.

    So far so good.

  138. What about that last cut made them think that this round should be three hours long? Jennifer came off like she cared more about Chris making the top 24 than he did.

  139. Woah! Kinda fake, imo!

I agree….the whole thing is like a bad soap opera. Hopfully it will be better once it goes live.

  140. I love James Durbin so I will be rooting for him all the way
sorry guys I know you are not with me on this one but I am sure there are more out there that like him also

  141. Really Jenny get a grip, it’s not about you at all. And producers this is what editors are there for.

  142. I felt less sympathetic toward Chris when he went on about Juliana again while he was facing the judges.

Jennifer came off like she cared more about Chris making the top 24 than he did.

I know. That’s was sort of weird.

  143. MJ: Bravo on that performance Jennifer.

I lost a lot of respect for Jennifer. Didn’t see many tears flowing. Seemed very fake and it was in very bad taste.

    Insulting conclusion to the show.

I can’t judge Chris on mentioning the fiancee as I haven’t walked in his shoes. Didn’t care for the song choice.

  144. I love James Durbin so I will be rooting for him all the way
sorry guys I know you are not with me on this one but I am sure there are more out there that like him also

    I like him. :)

  145. Deandre was cute and singing doesn’t matter anymore. Girls would love him and he would make for label mucho dinero.

  146. I don’t know if I can take two more hours of the green mile. I still am too ADD to
    sit through the whole thing.

  147. I love James Durbin so I will be rooting for him all the way
sorry guys I know you are not with me on this one but I am sure there are more out there that like him also

If James made it over Deandre I will slit my wrists.(joking) James’ sob story was as sad as Chris….Ugh!

  148. Paul McDonald is trending on twitter.

I called it. He’s going to win. I think it’s an idol first that a contestant got to play an original song. Not only is he trending in the US, he’s trending WorldWide

  149. I felt less sympathetic toward Chris when he went on about Juliana again while he was facing the judges.

It actually seemed like he thought he could sway them by reminding them of his sob story. Whoever said he put Danny to shame was right on the money.

Really Jenny get a grip, it’s not about you at all. And producers this is what editors are there for.

I’m pretty sure the producers & editors are who we can thank for that little bit of melodrama. The first few moments were great–Jen was very believeable. Then they had to go and beat us over the head with it.

Going forward, I’ve got my eye on Pia, Julie Z, Paul & Casey, with Robbie & Ashton close behind. Paul has a miiiighty interesting sound about him, he does.

  151. True that it was a hard job delivering the news to Chris Medina. He’s just not it for this show..
Paul MacDonald makes me think of a mixture of Rod Steward and James Blunt. It’s good he’s through. I’m looking forward to Pia tomorrow; i really like her

  152. I don’t know if I can take two more hours of the green mile. I still am too ADD to
    sit through the whole thing.

Good God is it 2 hours again tomorrow? I sincerely hope not.

  153. And yet Jenny’s tears are still far preferable (for me) than
    – Paula’s canned comments (with words she couldn’t pronounce) or
    – Simon’s disinterested/pompous negativity

  154. jpfan: He reminds me of the guys in Lady A. and he should get lots of votes from the ladies

Paul also reminded me of the Lady Antebellum guy.

  155. iluvai:
thank you, from all the comments most do not care for James

    I like James too!

  156. Lets just give the title to Paul Mcdonald. Twitter is going crazy over this guy.

  157. I will admit it (since others have) I like James Durbin as well 8O

ETA (I thought I may be the only one so I remained silent too long)

  158. Does anybody know if Jimmy Iovine and Universal can sign the singers who get cut….for example, can they approach Deandre at this time and sign him?

  159. I felt less sympathetic toward Chris when he went on about Juliana again while he was facing the judges.

I don’t know that we can 100% fault Chris. The judges seem to enjoy bringing up Juliana too. To me, Chris seemed okay with not moving on. I think he knew he was out of his league. No denying he’s had it tough so I’m glad he got an opportunity to bring a bit of excitement to his life and Juliana’s for a short while. I kind of think it was more about that for him anyway.

I thought Jennifer’s emotions were pretty genuine. Who really, besides Simon, takes pleasure in dashing peoples’ dreams? Steven’s got a really good poker face.

  160. yeah, I am making progress on some of you guys liking James too !!!!
Glad I came out of lurksville to add my comment

  161. F @ % K!!!!! UH DEANDRE WAS ‘THE PACKAGE’, REALLY INSANE THEY LET HIM GO… JUST DUMB….

as for clint, puleeeeeeeese… HE ISNT MARKETABLE!!!! DUH! HE CAN SING, BUT HE IS NO PACKAGE, AND HIS SELF ABSORBTION REEKS!!!!!!

hmmmm well they really want a female to win, that p@sses me off, i dont want to be led in their direction….

  162. Paul McDonald =James Blunt! Just please don’t let him sing “Beautiful” in the competition. I’m kinda hoping he goes the Kenny Loggins route. If so, he stands a chance for me to vote for him. I also like the toliet bowl cleaning Mom. She’s unique. So unique, I can’t remember her frickin’ name!!

  163. I’m getting teary, goodness. Chris is a nice guy.

Yes. Unfortunately, his singing is average at best.

  164. Marie,

I’m pretty sure they can approach someone, but I think they can’t release anything before the winner does. I’m not sure if a former contestant even at this stage can sign with anyone else for a certain amount of time, I think through August.

  165. Okay, I’m really glad Paul’s getting this much attention. Now he has a much better shot of cracking the Top 13! Plus, this is great exposure for his band.

  166. I will admit it (since others have) I like James Durbin as well 8O
ETA (I thought I may be the only one so I remained silent too long)

I Like him too. I just think he needs to learn control on his screams, and needs to realize he doesn’t always need to let loose with it.

  167. So far, so good. I’m liking all the contestants sent through. Impressive, though Idol sure is going all out on the drama queen stuff. I’m not buying any of it – the angels nor the devils. I have absolutely zero problem with Clint. Love his voice. As I do Haley, Paul, and Naimi’s. I’m not yet sold on Ashthon. She’s stunning, or at least her hair is, and very confident, but I’m not yet sure about her talent. We’ll see. Paul has a captivating, unique sound that could take him far. It really depends on how he plays this. Lovin’ the Haley. After this episode, I’m very much more optimistic about the season. Sad to see Deandre go because I really enjoyed his voice too, but hopefully he’ll either be back or find another door open in the music biz.

  168. Lol I told you guys about Paul. Heeeeeee iiiiisssss catnip.

I just don’t get it. At all.

  169. Lol, I think most people saw Paul coming from the first spoiler thread Gangreen wrote about 3 months ago.

  170. This is a very talented season. That being said, nobody has electrified me like in Season 8. But, at this point I predict top two will be Alaina and Paul. I also really like Naima and Brett and Robbie. But Brett hasn’t gotten much air time lately.

  171. Reminder:

Please refrain from putting words in people’s mouths. No comments like “I know people here don’t like so and so” is really off topic. Stick to expressing your opinion on the show please.

  172. I thought they were looking for a Bieber? They had their chance with Deandre. Really, really cute. The very young girls would love him. I’m sure they could have groomed him to be a pop singer/pop star.

  173. Lets just give the title to Paul Mcdonald. Twitter is going crazy over this guy.

TPTB are probably getting the bus from Season 8 all tuned and gassed up but if the twitter buzz is an indication, they are going to need a much bigger vehicle to stop Paul. I love it!

  174. I think Paul is going to be the Adam of the season. I know, risky intoning the Name of He Who Is Holy – but by that I mean the one who seems to already be a professional and keeps his cool. By the top five, they’ll be talk about whether he wants it enough, etc, and possibly he’ll be Daughtry’d. Something about calm contestants drives America crazy!

  175. I don’t get why Paul McDonald was trending. He’s good, happy to have him in the top 24, but he’s NOT catnip.

Still, so far this is a pretty good group. Better than last year’s, fer sher.

  176. Another great episode. I really liked Paul and Kendra, and Tim and Julie. I’m also a big Ashthon fan. I’m liking this season so far.

  177. Paul & Tim are hit or miss for me. Loved Tim tonight but I didn’t like Paul tonight. And that rose suit – what decade was that from.

Really have liked Ashthon on all of her performances.

  178. I really enjoyed tonight, but it was oddly draining. I feel spent after watching it lol.

  179. Valentin432: Lol, I think most people saw Paul coming from the first spoiler thread Gangreen wrote about 3 months ago.

Ha! Yeah I really liked some of his pre Idol stuff. He’s good. But I’d rather he not win. Maybe if he can draw a lot of votes we’ve got a better chance of getting rid of Tim Halperin and/or Colton Dixon if they make t24. In fairness Tim wasn’t too bad tonight but his voice has no depth whatsoever. Colton has a bigger voice but he feels like he’d be in that same HAC pop/rock mold so I’d rather pass on him, esp since his voice isn’t great.

Julie sounded good tonight. REALLY liked Pia and Karen. I kind of enjoyed Casey too. Lauren/Scotty/Denise weren’t great but I thought they were cute. Robbie sounded terrific, didn’t think Jordan was so hot. Enjoyed Jerome and Lakeisha way more than Ta-Tynisa who’s had control issues every time we’ve seen her.

Hollie sounded better in the Sing For Your Life than Naimi. I guess she was cut because they felt they had more marketable and distinctive pop singers. I love Naimi’s style but if they’re already warning us about her consistency I don’t know how far she’ll go.

I don’t get cutting Deandre so I wish they’d shown us some of his allegedly less than great solo performances. Clint has a really good voice but I feel like he’s there just so America can enjoy watching him repeatedly getting called out for cutting Jacee.

They should’ve just let JLo react to cutting Chris and not overplay the drama because it started to ring fake. It seemed like she was genuinely choking up and that she did as much as she could to clue Chris in that he wasn’t going to make t24 before she actually said it. But then all the cuts and dramatic voiceovers took away from the sincerity.

I think cutting Hollie was probably as hard for JLo as cutting Chris, even though she didn’t have to deliver the news to Hollie. I liked how the judges talked to Hollie and Deandre about their rejections.

I really enjoyed tonight, but it was oddly draining. I feel spent after watching it lol.

Really? you must be enjoying this year. I think its going to be good. I could have used more Las Vegas and less green mile. The talent is promising.

  181. Tonight was great. I love Jennifer and I love that she and Stephen care that they are there and care about the kids. I think the whole thing was just tougher than she thought and I imagine it is really hard to get to know the kids and know how much they want it and then to tell them no.

I like a lot of talent, but Deandre really should have been put through. I love that I don’t have a favorite now…makes it more fun.

  182. Clint has a really good voice but I feel like he’s there just so America can enjoy watching him repeatedly getting called out for cutting Jacee.

Yeah.. I got that feeling too.

  183. A travesty that Hollie Cavenaugh was cut. My goodness she was spectacular in Hollywood! Good on Jen for wanting to keep her. I’ve never seen someone develop so amazingly from an audition to Hollywood rounds. I think Hollie will be a force to be reckoned with as she matures. I hope to see her again next year.

  184. I really enjoyed tonight, but it was oddly draining. I feel spent after watching it lol.

I feel like the opposite, this was the show (at least the last hour) I’ve enjoyed the least, but it’s strictly my fault for looking at the spoilers and reducing the tension to 0

  185. We don’t need another guy to scream and make our ears bleed again. It took two years to recover.

  186. It’s too early for me to have a clear favorite, but there are a few that I am really looking forward to! I think some will surprise as the show gets going!

  187. When they referred to Paul McDonald as the Rhine-Stone Cowboy, was that a reference to Glenn Campbell? He’s good – but the Idol winner, I don’t think so.

I also agree they had their chance with Deandre. They told him and Hollie to come back, but they didn’t say that to Chris Medina. I really like Naimi Adedapo who may turm up to be a challenge to Pia.

It stinks that we didn’t get to see all the groups in Las Vegas. Another 30 minutes there would have given us Brett, Jacee, and a few others. Nigel was wrong to go with the DRAMA. I want more singing!!

  188. tomr:

We don’t need another guy to scream and make our ears bleed again. It took two years to recover.

    Clay is that you??? LOL

I thought this was a very good show. I’m actually interested in Idol again :) Paul McDonald’s voice is going to grate on me, but he reminds me of David Cook in look and wardrobe a bit, well except the last outfit..ha

  189. I LOVE this Season so far. Some of tonight’s performances were so good, and I’m soooo impressed by the talent this year. Right now my favorites are : Lauren Turner, Ashthon, Julia, Rachel, Paul, and Robbie. I’m excited for this season.

  190. It stinks that we didn’t get to see all the groups in Las Vegas. Another 30 minutes there would have given us Brett, Jacee, and a few others. Nigel was wrong to go with the DRAMA. I want more singing.

If they showed Brett it would have been ALL DRAMA lol. The two girls with Brett got in a screaming match right before their performance.
I am shocked we actually didn’t see it. Maybe to protect Brett?

  191. Vocal coach: WOW she is tough!

Tim Halperin and Julie Zorrilla: Holy cow that was great!!! Tim was fantastic! And together they were great! :)

Ashley Sullivan and her boyfriend: Hey they got married! YAY! :) Boy that woman who married them didn’t look very happy. I wonder why. Was this marrying them fake? :)

Casey Abrams and Chris Medina: WOW!!! They are awesome together. They jumped on a bed hahaha!

Chris Medina: Oh no! :( Why did they have to cut him? :( This sucks! :(

  192. I think Paul is the Dark Horse to win it all this year (and he fits the winning trend purrrrrfectly) but unlike the last 3 winners, i actualy like him. and i LOVE LOVE LOVE Haley. im happy w/ this seasons talent…

  193. tomr, I was comparing Adam to Paul in terms of charisma, professional level, and level-headed personality. I wasn’t comparing vocal styles at all. [Although I haven’t bought any of his music, I think Adam is an excellent singer. I just don’t think he and Paul are alike in that way.]

  194. I will not be watching this season. When they cut someone as amazing as DeAndre, something is very manipulated! Amazing vocals, his passion is incredible, very professional, pitch perfect! I think they were afraid he would take this season away from a girl. TPTB definitely want a girl to win.

If after watching DeAndre sing “This Woman’s Work” on youtube, I can’t imagine him being cut. Guess he was TOO much of a threat!

  195. I will not be watching this season. When they cut someone as amazing as DeAndre, something is very manipulated! Amazing vocals, his passion is incredible, very professional, pitch perfect! If after watching DeAndre sing “This Woman’s Work” on youtube, I can’t imagine him being cut. Guess he was TOO much of a threat!

Link? I don’t remember seeing any of DeAndre’s videos that weren’t traditional Hawaiian music.

Lol I told you guys about Paul. Heeeeeee iiiiisssss catnip

    .

I just don’t get it. At all.

Yeah, me either. I think he’s different, but I’m not sure it’s a different that I could stand to listen to for that many episodes and he’s not eye candy to me at all. He does remind me of James Blunt.

  197. Tim Halperin and Julie Zorrilla: Holy cow that was great!!! Tim was fantastic! And together they were great! :)

    ITA!

I don’t get all the love for Paul.

I wish we saw more people tonight tonight … I hate waiting.

  198. He isn’t my cuppa (at all), but I can very much see him being catnip to a sizable portion of
    the viewing audince.

  199. Paul was interesting, a small voice that brought some ambiance to the songs that he was singing. I think he brought the original song out too early in the competition. Unless he changes it up, everyone now knows what kind of artist he is going to be. His original song is going to be measured against every performance through out the rest of the season.

I liked Deandre, unfortunately, he resembled the current teen phenom too much. He doesn’t resemble in appearance or performance style, but it would just be too obvious to select him as a contestant. AI will not want to appear that they are copycats.

  200. Paul McDonald is excellent. Distinctive voice. Just listen to his pre-Idol music. Love the song “Dreamin’ Alone.”

Anyway, are we really done with Chris Medina? Or is Idol playing games? Remember, we’ve had late substitutions in the semifinals 2 straight years.

My impression of the judges’ decisions so far.

  201. Weird that those kids don’t know any Beatles song. My Grandbabes know both Elvis, Beatlesm and Michael Jackson’s music. It seems you would have to live in a cave or never watched American Idol! Like Jimmie says, the music is at the bars, the karaoke, commercials, and the radio. Oh, and it’s been featured on our show.

Tim Halperin and Julie Zorrilla sang my favorite Beatles song, “Something” – I loved it!

  202. I liked James and Stefano.

As usual, James didn’t hit that note very well, though. I know he can hit that better. Duet was much better than I thought it would be. I really like Stefano

Not really liking Pia and Karen on this song. I think it’s just a taste thing, however. Pia is my future wife. She has grace, and she’s way more on-pitch than she is with her YouTube stuff. Karen is also pretty good.

MY DOG STARTED BARKING AT SOMEONE OUTDOORS AND I DIDN’T GET TO HEAR NAIMA THAT DOG IS EFFING DEAD (no he really isn’t, I don’t really condone cruelty to animals… I’m just mad).

….I didn’t perceive Randy as telling Jacob to oversing, I don’t think he’s THAT stupid. Of course, someone was talking at the time so I didn’t hear him all that much, I just heard him telling Jacob to go for it, which I didn’t think meant oversinging.

Holy crap the talent tonight is amazing so far. Loved Lauren Turner, Rachel Zevita, Tim Halperin, Julie Zorilla have all been good. Tim and Julie gave me goosebumps.

  203. I just have to resign myself to Paul McDonald winning, he seems really talented and has a distinctive voice but geeze it just kinda bumbs me out to know how the season will all play out. Women vote for idol so there ya go. And it seems they want white cute guys. I loved that black guy Andre who was in the group with Robbie Rosen. His voice was wow! I dont think he makes it to Top 24. And Robbie was great but he doesn’t have the look that the idol demo votes for. Really like Namia and Ashton. And Lauren A. has a great voice but everyone seems to hate her. Ohh the other dark haired Lauren was great to. I liked the little bit of Rachel Z they showed singing Elenor Rigby. could we hear her sing a whole song already! And boo to dropping Hollie. She had real promise. And Lakisha too. She was great on Saw Her Standing there. Ohh Idol.

Gangreen, was this in a spoiler? I wonder who the girls were? Thanks for the information!

  205. Paul’s voice is very unique. I liked him — not sure about some of the faces he was making :)

  206. Okay, I am totally in love with the name Ta-Tynisa.

…Kendra and Paul, I love you, but you’re sucking ALL the energy out of the room (FG reference). Still a pretty song. I dunno. Though Paul does have a nice voice. I’m not sure he’s good enough to win, he’s distinct from the other 3 WGWG, and he does have a pretty nice voice, but this year I think the streak is over *knock on wood*.

What the HELL is John Wayne hiding under his hat? Unless he has an amazing TAKE-OVER-THE-WORLD LASER, take off the freaking hat! Would be a shame if he’s bald.

I dunno whether I love Ashley or am totally horrified at her “I’ll kill you in your sleep” thing. I usually like murder jokes, but that was just creepy.

They need to stop showing Lauren crying.

I dunno, Paul McDonald’s voice is good, but it seems a little too soft to do anything amazing. Maybe I’m just in denial a bit.

  207. Gangreen, was this in a spoiler? I wonder who the girls were? Thanks for the information!

Yeah Kari, Joesplace spoiled that info. The girls were Chrissy Feliciano who was cut that round, and Brittany Mazur who made it to the top 40. Brittany is supposedly just awful. She was snitching on everyone to the producers over the whole Hollywood week.

  208. I am not a Paul McDonald fan, don’t like his voice and don’t like his mannerisms, don’t like his rose suit! I am another James fan, love his voice, not so much his scream but hopefully he will get some good vocal coaching. I quite like Tim and Casey but at this stage anyway I not wanting them to win, all the girls I liked didn’t make it through to the top 24!

  209. Scott McCreery has a higher voice, and I really don’t hate it. I dunno how popular my opinion will be (*gets into bunker*) but I actually liked him again tonight.

  210. Paul McDonald and Tim Halperin — not getting the raves about these two.

  211. I really liked Paul, but you can tell he’s done damage to his voice. He’s not going to have any range or power. Will it matter? Who knows! But he’s very chill and polished. I like him for variety’s sake.

I also don’t understand why they cut Deandre. His uke playing was pretty terrible, but he sounded good and, more importantly, he LOOKED great. WTH? Maybe he was genuinely terrible on some other performances. If they’re really looking for a teen winner, I just don’t get why they cut him OR Hollie. She sounded terrific on her last performance. Better than Naima, I thought.

I’ve loved JLo up until this point, but I really thought she was dusting off her Actor’s Equity credentials at the end. It was pretty lame. And Randy and Steven aren’t that good as actors, LOL.

I’m not a Lauren Alaina fan, but I thought she sounded really good tonight. Thia too. And I like Clint and James just fine. I actually thought Casey sounded sub-par tonight, but maybe it was because he was stuck with Medina. Tim and Julie were awesome; I still think she’s a stealth CO. Like her much better than Pia and Karen. They just see so OLD to me, even though they’re very young.

I like Ashthon. I hope she doesn’t bore me with her song choices. I can’t stand Haley. YUCK! Jacob sounds cool when he just sings straight (reminds me of Antony Hegarty), but I hate all that bombastic melisma. Just NO! It’s the friggn’ Beatles, people. Have a little respect. :-D I don’t know why they cut Lauren Turner. She was awesome.

  212. Scott McCreery is Scott McCreepy. I don’t get that guy at all. I’m sure he is a nice kid but I don’t like him on Idol. Paul reminds me of Taylor Hicks, but I actually like Paul, he is likeable.

  213. Jammasta, Scotty showed more vocal range tonight than we’ve seen. It’s just he looks like a cheese ball when he tries to do anything but stand there. Maybe it’s the nuts of wonder in his jeans. I don’t know. I assume his SFYL performance was something different (was that a guitar in his hands that I saw in the promo clip?).

  214. wordnerdarchie:

    ITA!

I don’t get all the love for Paul.

Paul isn’t one of my favorites.

I wish we saw more people tonight tonight … I hate waiting.

Hahahaha we have to wait!!! :)

  215. Maybe it’s the nuts of wonder in his jeans.

Well, how the hell else would you explain the testosterone giving him his deep voice?! Probably he’s a cheese ball?

I hope I put an unnecessary image in everyone’s mind.

  216. I don’t know why they cut Lauren Turner. She was awesome.

    Lauren Turner is still in!

  217. Uh nooooo I would take Deandre over Paul and Scott put together. Dang it!! I would of taken Hollie over Haley. Haley reminds me of the other Haley (Scarnato?) from S6. They kinda look alike so it is kind of freaky, lol. Anyway I loved Hollie and her accent and I thought she did great in her final song. Oh well, they have to have some fodders get through. Scott shouldn’t of gotten through either. Well I hope they bring Hollie back for wildcards. :)

How come we didn’t get to hear some of the ones that were cut sing anything at all?? Why Nigel? Were they that bad, lol? The Ryan guy, where was he in the whole competition? I don’t remember hearing him sing at all.

  218. I hope I put an unnecessary image in everyone’s mind.

LOL, Jammasta. But I started it so shame on me.

BootStar, I think you’re living in my head. I had a lot of the same reactions and thoughts you did, except I’m finding Lauren A. less interesting with every moment of pimpage.

  219. that performance with Scotty, Lauren and the other girl was one big hot mess. I have no clue what the heck they were doing. And they all sounded bad. I also want to know who is dressing Lauren because that outfit???

  220. Scott McCreery has a higher voice, and I really don’t hate it. I dunno how popular my opinion will be (*gets into bunker*) but I actually liked him again tonight.

I agree with you. I like him too.

  221. LOL, Jammasta. But I started it so shame on me.

I actually had the thought of the reasoning of his deep voice the moment I heard he said “nuts of wonder”. I need to get my mind out of the gutter :P.

And Lauren Turner is still in, isn’t she? Thank God. Her performance was pretty good.

They haven’t shown a lot of trainwrecks tonight. Good.

  222. I’m getting the fodder vibe from the six Top 24 they revealed tonight. I don’t think the casual voter/viewers will remember much except that last 10 minutes.

What was with Naima’s dress for The Chair? Much of her appeal was her ethnic style, and she comes out like she’s playing the Cotton Club circa 1930.

What little credibility JLo had as a judge, went out the door when she admitted she wanted Hollie in. Especially after that HS talent show version of No One.

  223. Lets just give the title to Paul Mcdonald. Twitter is going crazy over this guy.

Maybe the only question will be who competes against him in the Finale and who makes the top 5? This could be an anti climatic season if Paul continues to be hugely popular. And it will tick off the producers who seems to want a young girl to win. I think they want a Female Bieber or Taylor Swift type to win. But I am wondering if a female can ever win again with the voting and demographics as they are now and how the trend has been the past 3 seasons?

  224. The number of people talking about Paul McDonald and the possibility of him winning is so freaking depressing. I almost hope he gets eliminated right away just to boost morale. Poor guy has to be on a season after 3 other WGWG.

….Aww Hollie, I really liked her. I don’t think J. Lo is acting all that much, then again I am mildly naive. Please come back next year!

Alex Ryan sounds kinda like Adam Lambert when he talks.

….wtf @ Clint crying. Hard for me to gauge crocodile tears, so I don’t think I’m gonna judge on that. I don’t think I hate him as much for some reason (Whoever said Jordan Dorsey is more of a douche is probably right). I just hope he becomes less of a douche. I kinda like his voice (but I HATE those glasses!)

I’m rooting for Scott McCreery of the two country guys. Why? Because John Wayne Schulz’s hat annoys the crap out of me, for some reason.

  225. But I am wondering if a female can ever win again with the voting and demographics as they are now and how the trend has been the past 3 seasons?

Which is why I predicted he would go far as soon as they picked him. I like the guy, but I don’t want him to win. I still want a girl to win this year. I was surprised the producers let him through because he’s exactly who the AI public votes for, and you would think they would learn after 3 seasons. Well if they get their 4th WGWG winner, they’ll probably stop casting these types altogether.

  226. Not understanding the love for Paul — odd tone and facial expressions. I do not think he’s a shoo-in for anything.

I really liked Julie, Pia, and Robbie. Casey, Tim were okay. The others were not memorable.

I’m just glad most of them have stage presence.

  227. “Jammasta, Scotty showed more vocal range tonight than we’ve seen. It’s just he looks like a cheese ball when he tries to do anything but stand there. Maybe it’s the nuts of wonder in his jeans.

LMAO.. oh poor guy will never live that down. Funny as hell.

  228. Eh, Paul won’t win. The fact that I like him is probably the kiss of death for him. Heh, sorry, Paul fans!

  229. Okay, I guess I do like Paul more than I thought, and send me to hell but that rose suit. Paul McDonald SWAG. I kinda want one now.

    I never say swag. Ever.

  230. Paul McDonald’s voice is going to grate on me, but he reminds me of David Cook in look and wardrobe a bit, well except the last outfit..ha

The only thing he has in common with David Cook is his fanbase who were probably throwing their underwear at the TV as soon as he started singing.

The number of people talking about Paul McDonald and the possibility of him winning is so freaking depressing. I almost hope he gets eliminated right away just to boost morale. Poor guy has to be on a season after 3 other WGWG.

As soon as they showed him singing, I rolled my eyes. I was like, well, you already won. Then, I get on the internet and hear about the Twitter explosion about him and everybody else drooling over him on various message boards. He is exactly what the voting audience loves.

But I am wondering if a female can ever win again with the voting and demographics as they are now and how the trend has been the past 3 seasons?

After what happened last season, I am sure a female will never win this show ever again. If a female does win this season, I will be shocked.

  231. Okay, James is my favorite because of his great tone, and range..IF he can control it.. he has a LOT to learn, but man! so, so much potential. He needs to sing like he did on that Youtube video “while my Guitar..”

The GIRLS ARE OFF THE HOOK! Wow! This whole “cast” could replace the Glee cast and improve it sooo much.. except the chubby black girl on Glee who is an unreal singer.

They’ve got some really good singers on this year, some serious pros..

James is so raw, but man the guy could be great.. if he had half of Adam’s control..training..etc the guy could be great..REMEMBER he’s 7 or 8 yrs younger than Adam, too.

  232. I liked the way they cut Deandre and Hollie and I understood why. I hope they come back. It’s much better to wait a couple more years and then go for the kill. I think the judges did them both a service for their future career.

It’s a whole different vibe with JLo and S. Tyler on board. I love it so far. Randy is more serious too or has more vocabulary. He’s trying.

Paul, Tim, Naima, Haley, Ashton, Lauren Turner – they all stood out tonight for me. Pia and Karen looked like real pros up there, real strong. Definitely Top 10 material. I also like Casey even if he wasn’t that great tonight. I think I prefer Jacob when he’s more restrained, like tonight. Robbie is good too.

I wish we would have seen more of the Las Vegas rounds and the Sing For Your life instead of the Green Mile taking over.

  233. I like Paul and dont think he gets the tweeners votes, Tim Halperin will get them…If Paul won he would be deserving, unlike the last two winners…Cook deserved to win too.

  234. Maybe this is just me, but I thought the whole vocal coach from hell was HILARIOUS! It was good to finally see Thia get some criticism, and the fact that that woman was so pissed off giving it was just hilarious for me!

  235. Isn’t Hollywood week a tad early to call the winner AND be depressed by it? I mean, I know I said I could see Paul winning, but you know what they say in baseball: It’s a long season. :)

  236. As soon as they showed him singing, I rolled my eyes. I was like, well, you already won. Then, I get on the internet and hear about the Twitter explosion about him and everybody else drooling over him on various message boards. He is exactly what the voting audience loves.

No way. Nope. Not voting for him. Tim Halperin, maybe. I get him even though he’s not my type of singer. He’s really good and cute.

  237. I think Kat McPhee’s mom was one of the vocal coaches (the tall dark headed one.) Did anyone else notice/think the same thing? #Idolpayrollperk

  238. I forgot about the vocal coach at the beginning. I loved her. What a beyotch. It was entertaining.

God, I admit, as much as I wanted Chris Medina gone (and I’m glad he’s gone), it was pretty sad to watch him go. He seems like a good guy. Hope the best for him and his wife. He took it so much better than J. Lo (or her actress side lol).

  239. Everyone insisting Paul will when makes me think of this time last year when everyone was convinced Andrew Garcia had the competition sewn up. ;)

LOVE him, though. I’d buy both his performance with Kendra and the Tim and Julie one. Wasn’t particularly excited about either of those two before tonight. Also really loved Karen Rodriquez, Lauren Turner, and Jacob Lusk.

  240. I think that many of these finalists or whatever they are called, did way better on Beatles songs, than other top 10 finalists on other seasons.

  241. I like Paul and dont think he gets the tweeners votes, Tim Halperin will get them…If Paul won he would be deserving, unlike the last two winners…Cook deserved to win too.

I think TPTB will do everything they can do to avoid a Paul McDonald win. I mean I’d love to see him and his band at an outdoor indie festival or a small, intimate setting, but the guy has very little commercial appeal.

If you think the last two winners lacked star quality, then this guy is just a quieter, quirkier version of those two guys. I could never see him having a top 40 hit. If Idol feels like they need a commercial star, they better pray this guy doesn’t win.

  242. So far I’ve been impressed with Pia, Robbie, and Julie. They each seem like they have a good combination of musical talent, vocal versatility, and likeability.

Needless to say, this season is shaping up to be much more interesting and entertaining than S9.

  243. I was really intrigued with Paul tonight and got very excited for him. But I don’t think I’d want a whole concert of him so I don’t know if it will take him all season….but it did for Lee and Kris so maybe.

I think there are strong females this year, but the problem for me is that so many of them (like years before) are just boring or lose presence onstage compared to the guys. But I think both Lauren’s, Julie and possible others might match the guys on strength on TV. I thought Rachael and Pia girl were lost on stage although they can sing. Love Casey but he doesn’t have the greatest singing voice.

  244. I’m not crazy about Paul McDonald’s performance style, but I think he might pick up the same type of voting bloc that helped Taylor Hicks and David Cook win. I can’t figure out yet if he’s a Kenny Loggins type or if he’d be more of a country/pop singer ala Charles Kelley in Lady Antebellum.

Robbie Rosen just might be the dark horse. He’s a talented, good looking teen boy who seems to have some confidence and charisma. He has stood out to me in both of his group performances.

After the group performances tonight I think Pia Toscano is the one to watch on the girls side. I haven’t seen any of the other girls that I think can beat the odds (and demographics) to win idol.

Tim Halperin reminded me of Jon Peter Lewis tonight. I don’t think that will work to his advantage if that ends up being indicative of his overall performance style.

  245. Lauren Turner was impressive! I wasn’t expecting it and want to hear more.

  246. Good luck to Chris Medina. I still like his vocals.. was he absolute perfection? No.. but he wasn’t hard on the ear either. I think he has potential. I really enjoyed his last song. I cried my eyes out at his leaving. His story is tragic and hopeful and tragic.. He seems like a great person and I wish him and Juliana nothing but happiness.

  247. I dunno, Paul McDonald’s voice is good, but it seems a little too soft to do anything amazing. Maybe I’m just in denial a bit.

I think he’s been protecting his voice. Here’s a couple of videos that give a better idea of what he’s capable of.

    http://lightning100.com/2011/01/27/paul-mcdonald-american-idol/

I really, really enjoyed the show tonight. I liked a LOT of the girls, maybe even more than the boys, and that surprised me.

I hope Casey gets better quickly so he can return to the competition. I also hope that he doesn’t use a gimmick every time he performs because I really think his voice is good enough to stand on its own. The whole bed thing was a little over the top for me.

  248. Paul has a good voice, but he was making me drowsy. He needs to punch it up a bit or something. His performance seemed kinda of snoozy, but his vibe is Kenny Logginish, so I’m not completely put off.. but am on the fence with him.

Tim didn’t stand out to me before today, so I’m excited to see what he has to bring to the table. There are a few girls that could give these boys a run for their money.. finally! This year will be way better than last year.

Too bad Ashley wasn’t good enough to stay.. I never understood why she passed to Hollywood… but she certainly is entertaining. Wow.. what a card that girl is.

  249. I don’t see how a Naima could lose to Paul. That’s just depressing.

I’ve listened to all of his pre-Idol music and I’d say he’s closer to Charles Kelley. Having said that, he’s really not like any other artist. His voice reminds me a lot of Rod Stewart but stylistically he’s more of a rock/blues guy with country leanings. It’s unique and very listenable. He’s a good songwriter, too.

  251. Will Jennifer continue with the cuts? Or will Steven and Randy have to carry on without her. BITCH PLEASE.

    That made me LOL MJ.

  252. I’m not crazy about Paul McDonald’s performance style, but I think he might pick up the same type of voting bloc that helped Taylor Hicks and David Cook win.

Aren’t Taylor and David vastly different??? Since I can’t stand one and I love the other??? lol….. Must be time for me to say g’night… :)

  253. James seems like he is trying to be Adam Lambert, but he just isn’t cutting it.

  254. Lets just give the title to Paul Mcdonald. Twitter is going crazy over this guy.

I’m surprised so many people like him. I need to re-watch my DVR because I don’t get it at all, not in the slightest.
I’m glad they have the guts to cut Chris Medina and not let him go to the voting round. I can see him getting the votes over and over just from the backstory. And I miss Jeremy Lister singing Fix You.
Glad that Randy gave that advice to Holly Cavanagh, she needs more experience and she still can audition again. They need to do that to all the 15-16 year olds in my opinion.

I’m mainly impressed with the girls, Pia Toscano is a total package I think, she is my favorite for now. Karen …(?), Lauren Turner, Kendra Chantelle. The guys, Robbie Rosen was the only one I remember being good.

  255. I can’t figure out yet if he’s a Kenny Loggins type or if he’d be more of a country/pop singer ala Charles Kelley in Lady Antebellum.

I would classify him as more Americana Rock.

    http://www.facebook.com/thegrandmagnolias?v=app_178091127385

I’m thrilled beyond belief that he was able to sing an original song for his final solo, I love that song!

I’m happy that he seems to be getting a good response, but i’m also not sure winning would be the best thing for him. He already has a very well established band, just getting some top 12 exposure would probably propel them to a sustainable fan base. Of course i’m hoping for at least top 10 so he will be on the tour :)

  256. This is one David Cook fan not getting the Paul love at all. My twitter feed has been spazzing over him all night and I’m just like huh? At this point if there’s any guy I like its Tim, but I’m rooting for Lauren Turner and Julie. Not all fans of those WGWG winners like the same “types” every year.

  257. @CarlySmithson: @jasoncastro Did u see the dude paul ? I texted dave cause I thought he looked just like him

    ruh roh

Ah, ok. Thanks for the info. I haven’t checked out much of the pre-idol stuff this year. I’m on the fence about him. He’s presentable and at times I enjoyed his voice. But his stage mannerisms and that damn suit…he’s either going to blow me away or annoy me to the point of insanity. Heh.

Aren’t Taylor and David vastly different??? Since I can’t stand one and I love the other??? lol

Stylistically, yes. My comparison is fanbase related. Taylor, David, and possibly Paul have that mid to late 20’s, struggling musician/songwriter thing going for them that the female idol audience seems to latch onto. In David Cook’s case I considered it a good thing. In Taylor’s case I hated every minute of it. We’ll have to see with Paul.

  259. I like Paul and dont think he gets the tweeners votes, Tim Halperin will get them…

Tim Halperin. Another one I rolled my eyes at when they showed him singing. I didn’t call him as the winner. He might be in the Top 5. A white guy who all the girls are going to think is cute and plays the piano? Yeah, they’re going to be losing their minds over him.

  260. Thanks Gangreen!

Say did we ever see Jessica Cunningham?

I don’t know who’s idea it was to have Jennifer get all so teary-eyed and emotional. Ellen said she just couldn’t handle rejecting the contestants and wouldn’t do it again. However, Jennifer knew ahead of time what was going on. The producers barked up the wrong tree with this added drama when we want singing!

  261. So far I’ve been impressed with Pia, Robbie, and Julie. They each seem like they have a good combination of musical talent, vocal versatility, and likeability.

Pia is really good. And Julie needs to stop wearing low cut dress / shirt like tonight and Good Day LA, if she wants the women’s votes. I don’t want a Kat McPhee backlash happening. I want a girl to win this year.

  262. Scotty proved he wasn’t a one-trick pony. Mj, why can’t you acknowledge that?

  263. Niall

Kris Allen had that same thing going for him and so did Lee. So not just Taylor and David Cook.

  264. When did Scotty prove he wasn’t a one-trick pony? His Beatles group performance was beyond painful, at least in my eyes. (I didn’t hear his “sing off” song).

  265. I think that many of these finalists or whatever they are called, did way better on Beatles songs, than other top 10 finalists on other seasons.

I disagree but to be fair they only showed seconds of there performances. Some of them did do really well as a trio or duo. The Beatles theme has given past idols some really great performances like Cook’s “Eleanor Rigby”, Archie’s “Long and Winding Road”, Brooke White’s “Let it Be”, Carly’s “Blackbird”, Michael John’s “Across the Universe”, Casey James amazing version of “Jealous Guy” and Mamasox’s “Come Together”. LOL I could go on forever but I will get in trouble.

This group seems pretty strong but there are definitely some fodders that they are letting through too easily. :) I still don’t get the Paul Mcdonald love at all, he seems to be boring and ordinary to me. I hope a girl wins this season. Idol needs a superstar! I still don’t see one in this group yet. That Tim guy sounds pretty good but really another guy. NOOOO….lol…. Pia, Karen, Ashton and many of the girls are really good this season.

  266. I was surprised to hear Scott sing higher and thought he did pretty well…but I thought some of his facial expressions were sorta strange, :/, lol.

Paul’s voice has a Rod Stewart sound to me.

  267. Girlygirl, Kris fits there for sure. Lee to a degree but I don’t think the audience latched onto him the way it did the other 3. If Twitter and what I’m seeing online elsewhere is any indication, Paul is going to be a juggernaut, barring a total week 1 meltdown.

To the person who thought Scott redeemed himself, I’d be more inclined to say he looked as awkward as I figured he would. He’s got no idea how to perform and his voice sounds ridiculous outside of his comfort zone.

  268. James seems like he is trying to be Adam Lambert, but he just isn’t cutting it

Yet, if you look at the work he’s done before Season 8, this has always been his style. He wants to be a Rock Star. I don’t see the comparison. James is being who he has always been.

I am less impressed with Scott and more impressed with Paul after tonight.

  269. I loooved Kendra and Paul. Theirs was the only performance I had to rewind and watch again. Lovely harmonies and matching soft tones. I was hoping I’d like him as much as I suspected. And she was a great surprise.

I’m still rooting for Scott McCreery and Brett – want to see them do well. Waiting to see if any other girls catch my ear tomorrow.

  270. Lauren, Scotty and Denise’s Beatles performance was so awkward. Lauren has a nice voice but her stage presence was seriously lacking and Scotty was worse. I didn’t pay any attention to Denise. If they had to be judged on that performance alone, I don’t think any of them would advance.

I haven’t made up my mind about James Durbin. His “Whores” video really turned me off and I’m not sure I can get past it. His voice is nice until he starts wailing and then I just want to press mute.

  271. *sigh*

Here we go again, let’s prepare ourselves for Paul McDonald victory in May. I actually like Kendra more in their Vegas performance, but Paul will get all the spotlight.

    Too bad for Deandre.

I also think they should cut group round in Hollywood week in future seasons and just have solos in Hollywood. Then take TOP 60 contestants to Vegas for group performances. Less drama, better singing. Just make sure they don’t have to sing the Beatles every year.

  272. I thought this was a great show and for the most part they all did a pretty good job. Some very enjoyable and surprising performances. But having grown up with the Beatles, I found it offputting that they kept switching up the lyrics! I know they had to cut the songs short but keep the lines together that go together!

And I think Scotty did well. I like his higher register, he has a strong clear voice, but his twang is a bit odd, and his facial expressions too. Hopefully that can be coached away.

  273. Peggy Blu makes good TV, is she coming back?

I think JLo is just tired. She looked fabulous — like a real star! But I think this long slog on TV is taking its toll, and she was the one giving the most critique to the singers. She was the most animated and really sincere. Steven pretty much sat there, didn’t have a lot to say (preserving energy).

  274. I definitely like Paul McDonald and look forward to hearing him sing more. But, for some reason, I don’t think he’ll win it all. I think it will be someone younger and more . . . “exciting.” I agree with whoever said it was a little odd that after Jennifer very nicely told Chris he didn’t make it, and he took it fine, she had the dramatic, teary response. (And producers – good grief! – I lost count of the number of times they played the clip of her saying “I don’t want to do this anymore” – five? six times?)

  275. I hope a girl wins this season. Idol needs a superstar! I still don’t see one in this group yet. That Tim guy sounds pretty good but really another guy. NOOOO….lol…. Pia, Karen, Ashton and many of the girls are really good this season.

Agree. These girls would fit in so well in the pop scene right now. I doubt that Paul or Tim could become superstars.

  276. Paul is a cross between Rod Stewart and James Taylor. Two great artists who have sold millions.

Get rid of the screaming fool. Didn’t like it when Adam did it and sure don’t like it now.

Anyhoo, like Paul and Tim a lot. Love Scotty!

I have never cared anything about any female in any Idol show; but have my eye on Lauren Turner. She is from my little town of Covington, LA. We only have abt 8400 people living here, so it’s pretty exciting that she’s representing.

  277. have my eye on Lauren Turner. She is from my little town of Covington, LA. We only have abt 8400 people living here, so it’s pretty exciting that she’s representing.

I have been watching her for a while: She is incredibly talented and I hope she goes far!

  278. I wanted more in Vegas but enjoyed last night’s episode. I’m starting to agree with the hype about this season’s singers being very good. I was quite impressed by a lot of them. No so James Durbin, think he’s a one trick pony and am so over his high notes every song.

I liked “I saw her standing there” and was surprised by all the criticism from the judges especially after they didn’t give Durbin any.

Already so tired of little favorite Lauren. She’s good but annoying with her contstant crying.

I like Paul McDonald but not sure how versatile his voice is for this type of thing. He reminds me a bit of Jason Mraz but my dh said Rod Stewart (in voice only, lol). Maybe a cross between. :)

I was sad to see Chris Medina go but agreed with the decision. He’s good but not that good. I don’t have a favorite yet but Julie Zorilla’s one of my favorite girs.

  279. Wow ok I just figured out who Paul sort of reminded me of… Alex Lambert (voice only). The comparisons stop there, just everything else is different from style to stage presence. Neither were really my cuppa.

I like Julie a whole lot too, but I need to see more personality from her first. Hopefully she will get more stage time at some point. I think she was smart to get on stage with Tim. It was a good differentiation from the other girls.

  280. Lauren Turner is still in!

Oh, thank God. I got confused with all the folks they cut without ever really showing much. She’s really good.

I think Paul will get a major de-pimp about midway through the season. As long as they don’t ridicule him the way they did Taylor, I think his fanbase will plateau after a certain point. And I’m pretty sure he has nodules or something on his vocal cords. You don’t get a voice like that without some damage. And he’s in his late 20s, isn’t he? That’s a lot of years to do a lot of damage.

  281. And I’m pretty sure he has nodules or something on his vocal cords.

I’ve heard this a couple of times over the last week. What is the possibility of this rumor holding water?

ETA: I did a google search..looks like this was an announcement he made on twitter. Is this correct?

  282. YAY – starting to hear some more love for Lauren T here! Loved Paul’s voice but he has to work on stage presence – during the Beatles he looked more awkward than Allison’s “T-rex arms” last year.

I didn’t think anyone sounded exceptional in their “Sing for their life” yet.

And to whoever said they’d never heard a Beatles song before (was that Ashton?) – OH PLEASE.

  283. I didn’t think anyone sounded exceptional in their “Sing for their life” yet.

Not surprising since it looked like they were in an airplane hanger. I think the acoustics probably stank.

  284. The only thing he has in common with David Cook is his fanbase who were probably throwing their underwear at the TV as soon as he started singing.

Hell, yeah, I hurried up and put my kids in bed and lied to my husband and told him that I had to meet up with Betty Sue just so I could fling my grannie panties at the TV in private!

  285. jammasta: Okay, I guess I do like Paul more than I thought, and send me to hell but that rose suit. Paul McDonald SWAG. I kinda want one now.

Not sure if those are roses. I thought they were magnolias (for his band The Grand Magnolias)????

  286. oza902 I never understood why she passed to Hollywood… but she certainly is entertaining.

I think you answered your own question.

  287. http://www.facebook.com/thegrandmagnolias?v=app_178091127385

Thanks for that link. I’m not hearing the “Americana” in the song I listened to, but they definitely have that look. I realized who Paul’s voice reminds me of: the lead singer of Thriving Ivory. FWIW, my teen son LOVES that dude’s voice.

Part of it may be timing too. Bands like The Avett Brothers and Mumford & Sons are HOT right now, and lot of folk-rock albums are selling well. If he’s smart, he’ll aim to finish third and get signed by a Sony Universal label.

  288. If Paul wants to be successful he should aim for Top 3/4 and stay with his band cause they have a good thing going here. Their songs are pretty good, and apparently they’ve had some success locally. I don’t see him being successful as a solo artist. I could see universal or some other major label signing his band after this season. I think it’s best that one of the girls win, cause they would sell records. And yes, Paul’s voice does remind me of the lead singer from thriving ivory.

  289. When did Scotty prove he wasn’t a one-trick pony? His Beatles group performance was beyond painful, at least in my eyes. (I didn’t hear his “sing off” song).

Well, if mugging is a trick then yeah, he has two.

  290. I just watched my TiVo. So MANY GREAT VOICES. I’m excited for this season. I’m gonna come back and read all your comments later. But I do think this is going to be a good season.

  291. Agree with most said about paul macdonald but his stage presence/performance style also reminds me of Chris from coldplay. I remember thinking that guy had jump around the stage arm swinging issues but good music. I think men get more of a pass in the quirky zone.
Paul macdonald was really good I’ll keep track of him/his band regardless of his placement.
    ALSO loved hearing original music!

  292. Oh, and I need to get it on the record that I LOVED Paul’s suit! It was very retro something (just not sure what, although I immediate thought of Chris Isaak).

Love his style or hate it, at least he actually HAS some. I can’t say that about any of my past favorites aside from Adam Lambert.

  293. I think it was a great idea to have duo’s & trios singing The Beatles- mainly because of the harmonies. Yes other years have had some good performances of The Beatles but there were many trainwrecks. Tonight there were few bad ones [ well what was shown]& many good performances.
I haven’t attached myself to any one person but I am glad that of those they have put through already- there is variety-hope fully that continues tonight.

  294. for me.. Tim & Paul stole the show last night… for the girls it was Julie..

  295. Not a lot of mention of Robbie Rosen, but I’ve been really impressed with him every time he sang so far. Kinda reminds me of the feeling I got about Kris.

  296. These contestants sing almost too well. It’s hard to get overly attached to any particular one.

  297. Okay, I read back and… can I say I’m surprised at all the Paul hubbub? He was good but I certainly didn’t get OH MY GOOD A STAR IS BORN vibes from him. LOL. I kind of saw him as Lee Upgrade and wished he would have competed last year.

As far as twitter.. did he actually trend on Twitter or was it just a lot of chatter on people’s individual feeds? Big difference.

Anyway, so many of them were good during Vegas/Beatles that I can’t pick a favorite. People who jumped out at me star-power wise were Julie, Stefano (new for me, I’ve never been impressed with him before), the longer hair really suits Naima and made her really pop for me, Pia and Karen were entertaining. Lauren Turner took me completely by surprise.. loved her. Ashton was totally cute in the chairs. But I think her voice is too thin for the songs she picks. I think letting Hollie good was a good call. Let her bake a year or two and come back. Deandre… the camera LOVED him. He’s a star. I don’t know if that was the right thing to do, but I haven’t seen enough of his performances to know. Durbin annoyed me with the screeching. He’s not that good at it and he should cut it out and just sing. He’s on the verge of pulling a Siobhann.

Oh, and Robbie Rosen makes me missing growing up in NYC. LOL. He’s so much like your prototypical NYC kid I can’t stand it. Plus he can sing.

I’m glad I’m taping tonight because 2 hours of that is too much. LOL

  298. I’m a big Beatles fan and I thought so many of them were just awful on those songs. I was cringing a few times only to hear the judges praise them! I do think there is a lot of strong talent in the group, but no one has REALLY caught my eye until last night – Paul McDonald w/ Blackbird. I don’t recall seeing him in the Hollywood rounds at all so far, or at least he didn’t stand out to me. I was hoping he’d go through even if as cannon fodder because I’d like to see more of him. So it’s kind of funny to see all this buzz on him here today.

  299. Liked the girls better. Paul based on what I’ve heard so far no just no. (Tim is better) Well maybe after a few more songs. I’m sure he’ll be sticking around.

  300. I’ve heard this a couple of times over the last week. What is the possibility of this rumor holding water?

ETA: I did a google search..looks like this was an announcement he made on twitter. Is this correct?

Yeah, he confirmed it on twitter. People were assuming he would just be cut because of it. Idol flew him out earlier than the others for the green mile to be checked on by their doctors.

  301. Paul reminds me of Lily Scott. I think he will be a shocking early cut.

    Yup, he trended. Worldwide!

Tina, I’m with you. I don’t see at all what the big deal is with Paul. To me he’s just more of the same. No thank you.

  304. I’m a big Beatles fan and I thought so many of them were just awful on those songs.

I was a big Beatles fan some 50 years ago and thought their stuff was new and exciting and unique. Now I listen to them and their stuff seems pretty boring and commonplace and really, really old-fashioned. So for kids bottle fed on the new stuff it has to be hard to connect with old music that is pretty placid, relies on the same rock beat over and over and has been played to death. And, really, when anyone changes it up they have a 50-50 chance of being thought brilliant or stupid since the originals are so well known. If I were a singer I would never sing the Beatles…it’s loose, loose all around because you either dishonor their memory or copy it to the point you are boring.

  305. Plenty of people still cover the Beatles and do a bang-up job of it. There’s no formula, but I think it’s really important to show a little deference to the provenance and neither maul the melodies (which for the most part are brilliant) nor hack the lyrics. There was some serious disrespect shown the Fab Four last night! :-)

(Maybe not everybody’s taste, but I love House of Heroes’ “Meet the Beatles” EP.)

  306. Valentin432:

Ashley got married in the same place as Britney lol

ROFL! And Britney is her hero!!! ROFL!

  307. gangreen29:

What was the girl from Brett’s group who got into a big fight before the performance narcing to the producers about? So curious LOL.

  308. Yup, he trended. Worldwide!

Oh geesh. But then again, so did that homeless kid from the Bronx and Chris Medina, right? I’m not sold on him as the winner just yet. I liked him, I’m just not super-excited about him.

I liked his duet partner (Kendra?) a little better. The thing is, she’s similar to Pia and Karen to me with a more interesting voice. I like Pia and love Karen, but they are both on the bland “professional singer” side. Kendra was more distinctive.

I thought Scotty did okay. Not a trainwreck at all, but not a knockout. I’m surprised so many people hated him. That group number they did was beyond cheesy though.

  309. So did anyone else raise an eyebrow when Jimmy Iovine just declared that Lauren’s group should get a new song, even though it seemed like they all had drawn songs at random? Or were people allowed to change songs and I just missed it?

  310. Paul is not leaving early. He created buzz and is a unique genre this season. This is not a girl s year either. Too many girls who sound alike.

  311. I thought Paul Macdonald was great!! Ok not earth shattering incredible but definitely one of the more distinctive and memorable voices among the men. And boy is he good looking too! Did you see the man when he went to meet the judges to receive his verdict? Whew…

  312. Paul is not leaving early. He created buzz and is a unique genre this season. This is not a girl s year either. Too many girls who sound alike

I’m willing to bet you are wrong on both accounts Jpfan. What do you say lol?

  313. I thought Scotty did okay. Not a trainwreck at all, but not a knockout. I’m surprised so many people hated him.

I think the problem is he LOOKED so bizarre when he was singing. If you just listen to him and not watch, he sounds just like a perfectly competent, if somewhat generic, country singer. I’m hoping he actually grows on the show and isn’t just being set up to be an annoying John Stevens or Sanjaya “character.”

  314. Not a lot of mention of Robbie Rosen, but I’ve been really impressed with him every time he sang so far.

I like him a lot. I thought he did very well last night :)

I think the problem is he LOOKED so bizarre when he was singing.

Haha, yes, he doesn’t look comfortable on stage at all. I like his voice, a lot. But I think he was right when he said that if he made it through it was because of his deep voice. It’s pretty different, especially for Idol. But I’m not convinced he’s going anywhere with it. Now my mother does adore him… so who knows ;)

I got a LOT of emails and texts from my non-Idol-bubble friends who were crying and/or angry that Chris Medina got cut…

I’m not sure I’ll sit through all 2 hours tonight. Now I’m kinda sad that I peeked at spoilers because it took all the tension out of it and that makes the long reveal seem really drawn out. How is it for those of you who didn’t peek? :)

  315. gangreen29:

What was the girl from Brett’s group who got into a big fight before the performance narcing to the producers about? So curious LOL.

If people were feeling homesick or anything she would run to the producers to tell them they didn’t want to be there. She also told them about any behind the scenes fighting.

  316. If people were feeling homesick or anything she would run to the producers to tell them they didn’t want to be there. She also told them about any behind the scenes fighting.

Heh. I hope the give her next to no screentime tonight except for a clip of her singing off key and a no. Karma is a b*tch, honey.

I got a LOT of emails and texts from my non-Idol-bubble friends who were crying and/or angry that Chris Medina got cut…

Oh man. Really? I am so glad they cut his ass then. People would have so voted him on on his story.

  317. Joyed:

Yeah it’s all good to know! :) Except I don’t like the red room. It’s always way to much talking. I just want to hear them singing. Altho last night the interview was short. :) So that’s good. :)

  318. Total conspiracy theory here (I am sure someone has already beaten me to it). Paul is too professional, confident and defined for AI. Does he really seem like the kind of guy who would try out? He is way too cool and it looks like he has a pretty good thing going on with his band already.

I wonder if they are secretly a newly signed band on the Universal roster, and this is a way for them to build their buzz (it’s working!)? I also wonder if the vocal nodules thing was invented or leaked so that he can bow out gracefully around, oh, I don’t know, top five, without having to be de-pimped or thrown under the bus. And them boom, I bet his orignal song will be released immediately. How nice that they allowed him to sing an original song that already has a professional video out. Has that ever happened before?

  319. sueigma – I’m not a huge fan of Paul’s but I have to confess.. however, I like them professional, self assured and defined. Personally, I don’t enjoy watching a bunch of newbies bumbling around on stage. I’m real excited that we have some seasoned vocalists and musicians this season. This is why in a certain sense I like SYTYCD a bit more, because they are essentially undiscovered trained professions. That said, I’m not convinced he is a plant though nor do I think I care since I just want to be entertained by a good tv show.

BTW – *no snark or attitude intended with my blunt response – hope it doesn’t come across this way. Rock on with your grassy knoll. I have some of my own. ;)

  320. Ha! Koshka, no offense taken. I actually really like him, and I can see myself buying that song for sure. The plants are typically my favorite EVERY year. lol

  321. If people were feeling homesick or anything she would run to the producers to tell them they didn’t want to be there. She also told them about any behind the scenes fighting.

Dayum that is some underhanded conniving shit. LOL I would have found that and the big fight much more interesting than some of their other trumped up dramaz this season, too bad it ended up on cutting room floor.

Altho tinawina you’re right, would hate to reward her with screen time for her bad behavior. No matter how tantalizingly juicy it might be.

  322. Paul McDonald’s voice is going to grate on me, but he reminds me of David Cook in look and wardrobe a bit, well except the last outfit..ha

The only thing he has in common with David Cook is his fanbase who were probably throwing their underwear at the TV as soon as he started singing.

With the exception of testosterone, I see absolutely no similarities between Paul and DC. And underwear throwing? P-l-e-a-s-e.

  323. I’ve only watched AI for the past couple of seasons (and last year from beginning to end), but S10 seems to be more of a “reality” show than ever before. However, I can’t fairly judge the first 5-6 seasons for comparison. Yes, I know it’s a reality show, but I never got the sense that EVERYTHING was planned out; almost scripted, and that I was being manipulated at every turn. At this point, I would believe just about every conspiracy theory related to this season. Is it the Nigel effect? Oh and by the way, JLO’s “breakdown” was the most pathetic attempt at acting I have EVERY seen on ANY show. Do people not understand when they are being manipulated? I heard a radio show in which people were calling in debating whether JLO would be able to continue… and how they understood her “pain”. Give me a FREAKING break people. Have we become that easily manipulated??? If so, God Help us all!!

  324. I’m really late with my comment, so hopefully some people are still here lol. But here is my take on last night.

The Beatles stuff was kind of lethargic and not particularly note worthy, if for no other reason than we barely got to hear much of any of the performances to really get a good sense of things, and because we had groups, some of the better talent was hurt by poor pairings/harmonizations, etc.

That said, here were my take-aways:

    * OMG with the showing of Lauren 20,000 times in the first 8 minutes!! Subtle much, Nigel ;-)
    * Jimmy Iovine could be a hoot or get real annoying really fast imo. For now I’m optimistic, though. It looks like he’ll essentially be the Simon of the season, only with a lot more actual, technical musical knowledge, so I’m hopeful this could actually be good. I still maintain it could get a little boring with ONLY him as the mentor all season, but he looks like an interesting character at least. Reminds me a lot of the tough love David Foster dished out in S5.
    * Julie is really good, technically, but still leaves me cold as a performer. Something a little “showy” and fake about her emotions during songs, idk.

As for the top 24 portion: I like Ashton – she reminds me a bit of a younger Beyonce.

Chris – that whole set up seemed anti-climactic, idk. Believe it or not, I think they should have at least reminded viewers of the fiance incident, to maximize the shock and emotion. Otherwise, all you had was a guy who sang really badly during his solo, which made his boot all the less shocking. In fact, there would have been more outrage if they kept him through based on those crappy vocals.

Oh, and Paul McDonald basically just won the season, just fyi ;-) All my twitter feed friends (who are all Adam fans who mostly despise the WGWG likes of Cook, Kris, and Lee), really liked him, said he was better than them and hoped he’d stick around, lol.

  325. Oh, and re Paul – I see it more as a hilarious joke on idol if he wins. He will literally be the 4th WGWG who wins, when that’s already become the running joke with the show. Granted, that will all fade if he becomes a huge success off the show, of course.

But still, I can’t imagine TPTB actually want him to win this year.

  326. I am so glad they cut his ass then. People would have so voted him on on his story.

Yep, I had the same thought. And wonder if that’s exactly why they cut him? I know one theory is that he didn’t have enough buzz but… at least in my little world, he had a TON. So it might be the exact opposite, assuming the really do want a girl to win. Same for that ukelele guy (Deandre?)… I would think he’d throw up a roadblock to a girl winning?

I’m not generally into conspiracies but find it curious ;) Of course then I can’t explain Paul and Tim who feed right into what seems to be the core voting audience the past few years. I personally don’t have a favorite yet – way too soon – and liked both but wasn’t blown away. I’d rather see Paul in a band for sure, that was my first thought. We shall see… you never really know until the actual performances start. This stuff is so edited, unless you see every minute of every person’s performances you can’t really get a feel for what they have to offer, I don’t think.

  327. Oh, and Paul McDonald basically just won the season, just fyi ;-) All my twitter feed friends (who are all Adam fans who mostly despise the WGWG likes of Cook, Kris, and Lee), really liked him, said he was better than them and hoped he’d stick around, lol.

I want you to know that, after all the WGWG bitching that got thrown around here in the past 2 years, if a sizable amount of the Guitars Are Boring contingent goes gaga for this dude I am going to laugh for YEARS. That would be priceless. :D Can’t wait for all the “but he’s different from the rest” justifications. Sure he is, ladies. Sure he is. LOL

  328. I’m trying to figure out why they are giving Paul significant airtime if TPTB want to avoid another WGWG. They could just throw a crumb here and there like with Tim.

For what it’s worth, I think he is different from the previous guitar guys — real distinct tone and style.

Anyways, the girls are overall better, but not as distinct as the boys. They are going to have trouble winning.

  329. Didn’t watch the show last night but looked at some videos- was loving Paul McDonald until he sang his original. It wasn’t that it was bad, but it REALLY made me flashback to the last three WGWG winners and the mediocre stuff they released on their albums. Do. Not. Want. Love his quirky voice but Thank God idol is letting them sing originals so you can get a taste of what their albums will sound like.

ETA: Tinawina- his VOICE is different from the other three. Style and looks, not so much, but I could understand why people would categorize him differently.

And am I the only one who sees an uncanny resemblence between Scotty and Clay Aiken when they sing?

  330. Sure he is. LOL

Yup. He is different … but then, DC is completely different than KA and KA is completely different than LD.

  331. Oh, and Paul McDonald basically just won the season, just fyi ;-) All my twitter feed friends (who are all Adam fans who mostly despise the WGWG likes of Cook, Kris, and Lee), really liked him, said he was better than them and hoped he’d stick around, lol.

I just don’t get the appeal. Maybe he’ll grow on me (but I doubt it).

  332. Add me to the Lauren Turner fans. She’s had the least screen time of the women, I think, but really impressed me this episode. FYI, I am a huge Cook fan, and didn’t really like Paul McDonald’s voice much. I think it’s an error to view Cook fans as some sort of voting bloc. I liked Cook and Allen, not DeWyze or McDonald. In the early rounds I liked a girl the most. The guys I favor the most so far are not WGWG at all.

  333. I understand that Paul is not quite like the past three WGWG’s, but especially this year, he becomes the de facto WGWG if for no other reason than no one else really comes close (except maybe one or two other guys I can’t remember now). But otherwise, Nigel et al are very intent to go for the anti-WGWG among the guys. James, Robbie, Brett, Jacob, etc. are not WGWG types.

  334. I wouldn’t lump Paul into the “WGWG’s who don’t deserve to win, but win anyway because of viewer demographic” category because:

    1) the WGWGs have been different
    2) some of the WGWGs have been more worthy of their victories than others (IMO David Cook is by far the best of the three, and Lee is just terrible)
    3) I just honestly don’t see Paul getting that far.

  335. ETA: Tinawina- his VOICE is different from the other three. Style and looks, not so much, but I could understand why people would categorize him differently.

They were all different from each other IMO. The only reason this one would get the “he’s REALLY different” tag is if someone happens to like him more than the others LOL. I ain’t mad, everyone should get the WGWGs of their dreams. ‘Tis the idol way. :D I just don’t want to hear any of the “I have better taste than to like a WGWG like the rest of you old hags!” stuff anymore. Heh.

All jokes aside, Paul is cool but I totally don’t want him to win. That would be boring as hell. No more rock guys. I don’t care if the second coming of Steven Tyler himself shows up on that stage, I’m not going for it. Hmph. I’ll take a guy winner BTW, just not a rock guy winner. Please, Idol gods!

  336. if anyone is still on this thread can you please tell me what
    “WGWG’s means thanks

  337. I think it’s an error to view Cook fans as some sort of voting bloc.

That is far, far too logical.

  338. WGWG:

white guy with guitar…out of 9 idol winners we have had three: Cook, Allen and DeWyze not to mention 4th place and very successful Idolette Daughtry.

  339. Just finished watching the show and all I can say is they BETTER have already signed Deandre to a label because if they didn’t they just made the biggest mistake ever. That kid is so good looking and has a great voice. I just don’t get why they would let that kid go. SMH.

  340. I think it’s an error to view Cook fans as some sort of voting bloc.

That is certainly true for me. I love David Cook … Kris Allen is just okay … and I cannot stand Lee Dewyze.

But hey, they’re all WGWG’s so I should technically luv ’em all. ;)

  341. But hey, they’re all WGWG’s so I should technically luv ‘em all.

Get it together. If you like one, you like them all. You know white guys. All the same. Well, if they play a guitar, I guess.

Actually this whole WGWG backlash thing is old, old, old. Like cheese with blue mold on it old. Makes me not want to come here :(

  342. I realized who Paul’s voice reminds me of: the lead singer of Thriving Ivory.

Bootstar — you called that one right. Definitely some similarity there.

  343. While I am an early fan, I think it’s wayyy too soon to declare Paul the winner. Pent up interest may or may not hold out.

    tinawina –
I like Pia and love Karen, but they are both on the bland “professional singer” side. Kendra was more distinctive.

This. I was also an Ashthon fan for a bit, but her musical choices have turned me off…for good, I suspect.

  344. I think it’s an error to view Cook fans as some sort of voting bloc.

I’m sorry, but I have to believe this especially since I remember reading somewhere that it was the Cook fans who voted Kris into the Top 12 and ended up voting for Lee.

It’s not just Cook fans voting for one person or another. And they definately don’t vote as a block. I know some who voted for Kris, but quite a few that voted for Adam in Season 8, same with last year. I do think that indirectly, that since he and Daughtry were on, that more rock fans started watching the show, and those that like when people really show who they are as an artist on the show. And that people who are fans of a particular artist are more likely to like the same other artists. But I don’t think it is a concious or organized thing.

  346. My favorites so far (in order of preference):
    Tim
    Paul
    Kendra
    Naima
    Julie
    Ashton

What can I say? I just like male voices. Always have. Idol is actually really entertaining this year, and everyone did a pretty good job in this round. I’m actually starting to get excited.

  347. I’m sorry, but I have to believe this especially since I remember reading somewhere that it was the Cook fans who voted Kris into the Top 12 and ended up voting for Lee.

From someone who lives in Cook fandom, I really don’t buy that. Don’t know where you read it but… we’re not a cult :) I’m sure SOME Cook fans voted for Kris and SOME voted for Lee but we didn’t have some organized LONG LIVE THE WGWG! thing going on. I didn’t vote for anyone Season 8 regularly, I liked a bunch of them but had no clear favorite and would have been happy with Adam or Kris or Allison for that matter winning. Season 9 I did not like Lee, at all, and voted for Crystal when I did vote. Now maybe I’m an oddity and so are my Cook fan friends but… none of us had some master plan going on.

Well, maybe not your section of the fandom. But I read that some Cook fans voted for Kris and Lee.

  349. But I read that some Cook fans voted for Kris and Lee.

Sure, but that hardly constitutes a voting bloc or any sort of organized/extensive fan planned voting. I just don’t think it was there. Other Cook fans voted for Adam, or Crystal, or whoever. I’d be perfectly ok with a girl winning this year. We’ll see what they bring next week.
