X Factor Winner Melanie Amaro Being Kept Out of the Spotlight Until She Loses Weight?

THE X FACTOR: Top 3 Perform: Melanie Amaro performs on THE X FACTOR Dec. 21 (8:00-9:30 PM ET/PT) on FOX. THE X FACTOR Finale airs Wed., Dec. 21 and Thurs., Dec. 22 on FOX. CR: Ray Mickshaw / FOX.

Have you wondered what X Factor winner, Melanie Amaro, has been up to these days? Were you surprised Simon Cowell wasn’t showing off his Season 1 winner at yesterday’s FOX upfronts where he announced the addition of Demi Lovato and Britney Spears?

A source tells the Hollywood Reporter that judge L.A. Reid, who is overseeing her album launch, has her squirreled away…until she loses some weight.

So why has Amaro been so out of view? According to a source, the 19-year-old British Virgin Islands native has been ordered to undergo a sort of pop star boot camp that involves a strict regiment of exercise and monitored nutrition. “L.A. Reid is adamant that Melanie get thinner so he’s hired a trainer for her, has her on a strict diet and checks in personally every day to see how much weight she’s lost,” says an insider, who says Amaro is also seeing an etiquette coach (an Epic representative denies the claim). “When she comes back, it will be a whole new Melanie Amaro.”

An etiquette coach? Is that to keep her from randomly busting out the  island patois? Isn’t it enough that the girl can sing?

Considering the short attention spans for singing show winners–not to mention the  proliferation of singing competitions means there are even more out there looking to break–keeping Melanie out of the  spotlight for too long could backfire.

There is so much to hate about this story I don’t even know where to begin….hire all the teen bimbos you want Simon, I won’t tune into your lame show anymore

That’s crazy! She is a beautiful woman!

  • http://twitter.com/HaleysShindig HaleysShindig

Who? I’d already forgotten about her, honestly.

  • http://twitter.com/cheeseE1 EH

I got bored with X-Factor pretty early on and figured the winner already had a failed single and disappeared like The Voice winner. Good move, there, L.A.

She’s not exactly a tiny girl, but she’s not any bigger than Jordin was when she was (successfully) launched. Ridiculous

  • Anonymous

Really? let her loose weight in the public instead of hiding it.

From “Don’t Let Me Get Me” by Pink:

“LA told me, ‘You’ll be a pop star, all you have to change is everything you are.'”

    This whole thing is gross.

Well honestly, that’s what happened to Jordin and Jennifer Hudson.  jennifer even admitted that her manager told her, she would get more acting  Parts and exposure if she lost weight.  And don’t you believe that Jordin lost the weight just because she wanted to feel better.  It was the Sparkle part.  All the record companies who have big plans for their singers ask them to do it now to compete against the Beyonces and Katy Perrys….sorry to say it, and it is healthier.

Actually, I’m not surprised. I remember seeing a picture of Melanie a few months ago. I don’t know where she was exactly, maybe going from a visit of her label’s HQs, I think. Anyway, she looked like she was headed to the gym. Or something.

So, my impression at the time was that they are working on several different areas with her, not just the music.

    Disgusting and sad if true

  • tinawina

I sorta get L.A. wanting her to lose weight given the modern music scene. I don’t like it, I think she would have been fine anyway, but I get it.

But hiding her away? For what purpose? Is this so she can make a “dramatic” return where everyone is talking about her weight loss and not her music? And don’t get me started on etiquette lessons. What, was she raised by wolves? She doesn’t know how to walk and talk and eat with a knife and fork? Is this the 50s? Are we going to have a debutante ball next? Is she meeting the damn Queen?

Calling the girl everyday to see how much weight she loses? REALLY? She couldn’t have just lost it gradually like a normal person. The world would end if she isn’t a size zero when her record comes out?

    I hope it’s all just a rumor.

  • http://twitter.com/mcdeallover Sunny Mc

Seriously, have they learned nothing from Adele.  It’s the quality of the music, and the musician being true to themselves. Not every pop star needs to grind the stripper pole!

  • http://twitter.com/cindydesigns Cindy

They will soon find out that this is the wrong move.  Wow, I almost don’t want to watch XFactor next season.  Melanie is gorgeous and I love then her accent sneaks out.  It makes her unique.  Ugh.  I wish they would give LA Reid the boot.

  • Anonymous

That’s true, and I think Christina Aguilera is another recent example (the world is still waiting for her new single). I have no problem with singers losing weight, or wanting to, in fact I think they can set great and encouraging examples, but I don’t like the idea that it’s an ultimatum. Jordin lost a lot of weight, but it was years after her Idol win and I think she did it for herself.

  • http://twitter.com/MissGolightly22 No Thanks

I think this story is probably exaggerated.  I seriously doubt that they want Melanie to come out looking like Rihanna or any other stick thin starlet.  I think LA Reid just wants to polish her up and give her a “pop star” make over.  Get her more fit and toned.  And “etiquette” lessons probably just means media/PR training (which, let’s be honest, a lot of this talent show kids need BADLY).

Rage all you want part of being an entertainer is creating a look.  Were any of you raging when Chris Rene got his meth teeth fixed?

  • Anonymous

Adele is THE exception. Everyone else, male, female  is trim and has a good figure, it’s part of the job.

How old is Melanie? In the pic, she looks 40. It’s a no no for the industry.

  • Anonymous

I wish they would say they were doing it because being overweight is actually pretty unhealthy (in the long run anyway… same for being underweight, by the way), but, they’re not.

  • Anonymous

I was about to say the same thing about the media/pr training.

  • fuzzywuzzy

“An etiquette coach? Is that to keep her from randomly busting out the  island patois? Isn’t it enough that the girl can sing?”

Apparently not. I think that an “etiquette” coach may be  the female counterpart of a “swag” coach for guys. lol

  • justmefornow

So, she’s a little chunky, so what? What I think is more important is she’s missing her 15 minutes of fame.
There are too many singing shows now, spring, summer, fall, etc. Getting her out there and releasing something soon, before the various other winners pop up is more important.
15 minutes (and ticking), more important than 15 lbs.

  • too-cool-for-school

Sounds like a PR stunt to me. A really wacky, pitiful and stupid one, but these are the X Factor people we’re talking about. I expect no differently from them on how they plot out their schemes for publicity.

As if they realize that few to none are paying attention to Melanie and this story will drum up buzz and sympathy for her. This is their way of getting her back in the spotlight.

It is an image-conscious industry whether we like that or not (not), so I can see her weight sadly being under scrutiny. I doubt that they are barricading her to her home/gym, and monitoring every crumb she eats, however. This just looks like an insane cry for attention by Simon/Reid/etc.

Once again, though, these are some real kooks. Anything is possible. :/

  • revcat

I don’t know if I can stand another season of Simon and LA Reed and their unattractive, smug personalities. The show was more about the judges than the contestants. Visiting their lavish mansions, squabbling on air, talk about the priviledged 1%! Don’t think I will “occupy” the couch when the X factor returns, not even out of curiousity. Have zero interest in Demi & Brit.

  • http://www.jstamers.com/ Jordan Seltzer

Lets be honest here – this is Hollywood. Every artist that is signed to a major label is changed and altered and recreated to fit a mold. Take a look at any artist before they were a star and then when they are launched – its polar opposite.  I think people are just used to Idol pushing its winner out there as they are. But this is the abnormal.

Whether it will work, who knows! But honestly it doesnt matter how long she is out of the spotlight – if she comes back with a banging song and returns to Season 2 and kills it, the years wait will be well worth it.

Honestly – LA Reid knows what he is doing. Whether people like him as a judge is up to personal preference, but he has a huge track record in creating stars.

  • http://twitter.com/simply_fans Lina Riyanty

So far only Adele & Kelly Clarkson which prove, they sell music to listen not to hear

  • Anonymous

Chris Rene is already on the charts and Melanie isn’t. And whatever became of the 2nd place winner. I think the first season of the x-factor is going to be like Season9 of American Idol– the season that never happened. It appears Chris Rene, though not the best singer was the most marketable. Having your teeth fixed is far less offensive than being put on a diet. Crystal Bowersox was not rail thin and she wasn’t forced to diet, but she allowed to have her teeth fixed. Jordin Sparks was also not a tiny woman nor is Kelly Clarkson, but they still put out there music. As a woman, I do find it offensive. I have bee thin all my life, so it’s not coming from any emotional baggage.

  • too-cool-for-school

It is a crazy show indeed. Like if someone wanted to make a negative/sarcastic parody of a singing competition, it would be the US X Factor. They could just air footage of the trainwreck moments, ha-ha.

  • http://twitter.com/tinawinabina Tinawina

If the story is indeed exaggerated I don’t have a problem with any of it. Media training (vs etiquette lessons) is perfectly appropriate, and getting a bit more fit is fine.

If the story is as reads, then that is what I would object to.

I also don’t think the time away will hurt her too much if she makes a big splashy debut on the new XFactor and the music is super strong. But the strong music thing is a big if.

  • Anonymous

This is so sexist and disgusting. Does L.A. Reid make his male artists lose weight or take etiquette lessons? Somehow I doubt it. And it just continues what he tried to do with P!ink — who rightfully told him to shove it.

I  have no problem with Melanie trying to lose weight and get in better shape, although to me, there was nothing wrong with the way she already looked. But she shouldn’t be forced to do so unless she is endangering her health. And the etiquette thing is ridiculous — what century is this again???

  • http://twitter.com/MissGolightly22 No Thanks

When it comes to weight and our looks, every single woman on the planet is riddled with emotional baggage – from thin to over weight.  It’s a sensitive subject.

I’m just saying, once you get into the entertainment business, what you look like is major part of selling yourself.  And a HUGE part of being a pop star is image.  Who knows what direction they take Melanie, but it was never going to be the same girl that was living with her parents when Simon came knocking on her door.

  • http://profile.yahoo.com/XDQP2Y46M5B3OHOKALDDGDHQCM Leandro

Never thought that she was fatter than Kelly Clarkson, Rubben, Fantasia, Adele, Jordin Spark, Susan Boyle, Adele and etc…

I jsut thought she was boring, not marketable and they don’t know what to do with her,

I don’t believe at allon this source

Yes, I do.  You think they’re not trying to get Josh Krajek to wash his hair, shave his beard and loose a few pounds?  Didn’t we all see Tommy Hilfiger trying to get P2 to dress in flashier clothes?  Yeah, the dudes deal with it too.

  • Incipit

Eh, the guys get trainers and swag coaches, the women get diets and etiquette lessons..

Being fit is healthier, and stamina is needed for this gig – so I can’t argue with that – but if this was the Hollywood Star System from MGM of the 1940’s, they’d throw in horseback riding and fencing, ya know.

“The more things change, the more they stay the same.”

Hopefully, they all get ongoing classes in PR and Public Speaking too.

  • http://profile.yahoo.com/XDQP2Y46M5B3OHOKALDDGDHQCM Leandro

Actually, she isn’t. She’s definitely ugly without make-up and it’s a much bigger problem than her weight, considering that, actually, she never was really obese. But then, again, makeup corrects anything and that’s not really the problem…they just gave up try to market her.

  • Anonymous

Losing weight (or gaining weight) for a specific role in a movie I understand.   A young singer being forced to lose weight out of sight is wrong.  I dread the unveiling–should the public be outraged at the x factor or support her in her “achievement”.

It is possible the whole world could benefit from etiquette classes –I think they could give a young person more confidence in situations they have not dealt with before.  I guess it depends what they actually entail.

  • Anonymous

I didn’t watch x-factor and I only know of her from this blog. I totally forgot about the dude who came in 2nd, if there ever was need for a makeover, he’d be it. I think Leona Lewis is far more marketable than Melanie and where is Leona now? Only her ardent fans can answer that. If I don’t hear it on the radio or mentioned by word of mouth or through reputable media, then they are not on my radar. I would say those on this blog or those follow these singing shows are far more aware of the contestnts’ pursuits than the rest of the public. Music has always been the big “if” for every artist. I think she is a very good singer, but i

If Melanie agreed to it so be it, but right now it reads to me that the winner isn’t good enough. Susan Boyle had a dramatic makeover. I think Melanie should be in reasonable shape by this point. It has been awhile and she wasn’t obese. She can diet and exercise while pursuing her music. I don’t get the delay being centered around weight loss. It’s illogical.

  • justmefornow

I agree, this is more about her being boring and not marketable.
I said it then, and it’s so far coming true, that Chris Rene was the most marketable of that top three.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Guilherme-Santos/100000846666929 Guilherme Santos

And than, also, keep her out of the spotlight until people forget about her?! She will need some HUGE promotion to make some sort of sucess, otherwise…. At least, seems that they will use her weight lost as backstory (Simon loves one).

  • Anonymous

The entire self-absorbed planet is riddled with something, my point was I didn’t suffer through the malady of being either too thin or too heavy. This is a very serious and painful subject for many people. I was responding from a more objective POV. Get a makeover, lose weight to be healthy, but get the damn music out there while some people still remember who you are . . .

  • http://www.etsy.com/shop/AdorablyHooked Gwen

    Exaggerated hearsay.

  • http://profile.yahoo.com/DJ4FPAE2BM4XDCNVQITJSS3S2Q Sue

You got a point. James Durbin got his teeth fixed (he had a snaggle tooth while on Idol) and lost the 30 pounds he gained while on Idol. But that’s so that he can have more energy and stamina when he performs “if I’m fit I can have a better time onstage”.

  • Itsmekg

That Pepsi commercial was a fail in my opinion.  She had on FAR TOO MUCH attire, not that she needed to be showing skin, but she looked a hot mess, and her hair is not right, and she is BORING!!!

Just because a person can sing, doesn’t mean they have the “IT/WOW” factor, e.g., JHud.  No matter how good of a singer she is, she just doesn’t have the WOW factor for me.

  • Mateja Praznik

Wasn’t Lauren Alaina on a diet last year while on the show and on Idol tour?

I just don’t see the problem. LA Reid, Simon and everyone just want Melanie to be in top form when they launch her.

  • justmefornow

I didn’t know he had dental work, but obviously you can tell he lost a ton of weight. There’s no way he could be performing with the energy he has been lately if he was carrying that extra 30 lbs.
But being a guy doesn’t make him immune from the pressure to look the “Lean, Mean Rocker” as well.

  • Anonymous

Good grief, this is nuts.  I thought of her patois when I read of her “etiquette” coach.  I don’t think they are teaching her what fork to use.

  • http://twitter.com/TweetsFromFrank Frank

WHAT THE HECK! Melanie was voted as the winner for a reason. If American really hated “plus sized” women, then she would not have made it as far as she did. Plus, I think she’s pretty how she is now with her curves. I hope they aren’t gonna make her too skinny.

Btw, Adele is bigger and no one is keeping her out of the shadows until she’s a size negative 42

  • Anonymous

Melanie could just eat as much as she wants, loll around, and live off of her $1 million a year annuity.  She’s not going to sell any records anyway.

  • Trina

Have you seen some of the biggest pop superstars without makeup? They all pile on the makeup and not all of them are exactly supermodels without it. Melanie is no worse than some of the others who need makeup to look pretty.

Honestly I’m not shocked by any of this. I see nothing wrong with being told to lose a few pounds but when perfectly normal looking girls are being told theyre fat and ugly I can understand why so many girls today have self esteem problems.

  • http://twitter.com/MissGolightly22 No Thanks

And who’s to say they don’t want the same for Melanie?  She is certainly going to need the stamina once she’s launched.

Another example of a guy having to change – let’s look at Adam Lambert.  The “real” Adam Lambert was a chubby, ginger haired theater geek.  Do you really think Adam would be where he is today if he didn’t decide to lose a few pounds, dye his hair black, wear make up and throw glitter all over himself?

  • Anonymous

Patois meaning her dialect?  But why get rid of it when so many artists are imitating it?  If  this is what you are talking about it should be an asset shouldn’t it?

  • Anonymous

LMFAOOOO! Good Luck with that Simon!

  • http://twitter.com/facenfield David Facenfield

I think Cowell is following the same approach he did with Leona Lewis when she won the UK X Factor about 5 or so years back.

She was out the spot light for about 8 -10 months post winning, got all the grooming/etiquette/styling stuff mentioned here with Melanie (except the diet / weight thing wasn’t really relevant to her).  During this time she obviously recorded her album also J

At the time Leona also got all the ‘where is’, ‘why is she being hidden away’, ‘is it because she is boring / unmarketable’ comments also.

In the lead up to the single and albums release she was then everywhere, huge push by the label / Cowell – marketed as more than a talent show winner.  Coincided with the following season of X Factor (so she could appear as performer on the 1st results show, to remind the top 12 what they were competing for).

We all know Cowell isn’t the most imaginative of people, so I imagine the same thing will happen stateside with Melanie

  • Anonymous

The etiquette coach thing reminded me of what they used to do for Motown artists so that they could appeal to a wider (and at that time whiter) audience. I’m not surprised they do this to some degree now, especially considering Simon just signed on Britney and Demi (both products of Disney) as judges. And I’m sure most overweight celebrities are told they need to lose weight at some point – the only issue for me is if she was forced under contract or if she willingly underwent the training. I really can’t tell from these statements.

  • http://twitter.com/MissGolightly22 No Thanks

Good point.  X-Factor does things differently.  They give their winners a year to develop and work on their album.  They aren’t rushed out like Idol winners.  They usually wait to debut them again on the next season, giving them a big platform to promote and positioning them for the big 4th quarter/Christmas sales season.

  • http://profile.yahoo.com/DJ4FPAE2BM4XDCNVQITJSS3S2Q Sue

I guess it depends on what direction they’re taking her in. If she’s going to remain a soulful balladier then being fit doesn’t matter as much. But if she’s going in a more dance pop direction then she won’t be able to perform if she’s unfit.

And yeah I knew that about Adam, saw some old pics of him.

  • Anonymous

This is the US we’re talking about. Things are quite different over here and XFACTOR wasn’t that popular last year so it’s not good to keep her out of the spotlight for so long. Her performance on the charts right after the show and the epic (no pun intended) pepsi song fail should give them an indication that they shouldn’t waste time with her.

  • http://twitter.com/MissGolightly22 No Thanks

They’re never going to do that.  She’s the inaugural winner.  They will do everything in their power to promote her and make her a success.

Even AI didn’t rush out Kelly’s 1st album, they took their time to launch her along with the new season.  She was the inaugural winner and if she didn’t do well, they wouldn’t have lasted as long as they have.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Tara-Muscillo/1330604696 Tara Muscillo

    Why am I not surprised?

  • Anonymous

She is an absolute flop of a winner.  Zero social media buzz and eclipsed 100x over by the judges announcement.  I said all season long that her rediculous and voluntary accent will be the death of her career and I was right.  Also, all that vain glourious “im annointed by God, The Mighty Lord” wackyness she would spill out is incredibly unpalatable to so many people.

Lets read between the lines on this one.  The show & PR tour was over in January, right?  How long would it have taken for her to lose 20lbs?  Not 5 months if she was actually working at it.  How long would it take to learn baisc PR and interview skills?  Not 5 months if she was working at it.

The point here is that Melanie Amaro is a difficult person to work with and unprofessional.  This story is laying the foundation for why her album wont come out with much support and why she wont be going on a meaningful tour.  She is too affixed to her her way of interacting with the world, and that inolves too much righteousness and silly speech patterns to make it as a commercial artist.

  • http://profile.yahoo.com/XDQP2Y46M5B3OHOKALDDGDHQCM Leandro

I know they aren’t, and once again, that’s one more reason I don’t  beautifulbelieve the source. Melanie beauty/weight isn’t the real problem. She’s just not very current, not totally marketable and they’re focusing on Chris’s career, who’s doing very well on i-tunes sales. They’ll present Chris as the “successful story” of X-Factor and just shunt Melanie.

  • http://twitter.com/KariannHart Kariann Hart

Soakey, are you a neighbor or did you go to school with Melanie?  You have a lot of hostility there, so I am thinking this person knows Melanie personally.

  • Anonymous

Not even close there Sherlock.   I’m neither American nor a Virgin Islander.  And if i knew Melanie personally, I’m sure I’d be happy for her and think she had no limits to her success.  But I am in the demographic to appreciate and buy music from XFactor’s “World Star” *snicker*.  And Melanie Amaro isnt it.  Even the Pepsi commercial was a flop, the girl has no presence and just looks like someone was trying to cheaply cast a Mya Rudolph impersonator.
The people I feel bad for are those underlings at the record label and management company tasked with at least recouping the $5m in prize money through album and concert seat sales.  Its not her fault entirely as XFactor has and will always be about the judges, never the artists.

  • http://twitter.com/facenfield David Facenfield

this is where X Factor (at least based on my UK experience) is different to Idol.  The runner(s) up (if picked up by Cowell and the label) are most often released in the Spring/Summer (see release dates for first the likes of Ray Quin, Olly Murs, JLS, Cher Llloyd and even One Direction – all had first singles and often albums out before the winner).

On X Factor the winner is brought back in a blaze of glory in the autumn to coincide with the following season of the show.

As No Thanks says, Cowell will do everything in his power to present her as a success story – to him winning is everything (hence the $5 mill prize).

There are so many overlaps between Melanie and Leona – big voiced diva, sang lots of power ballads on the show, not coming across as modern and marketable, some called her boring etc…

So I imagine Melanie will also be marketed differntly than she was on the show, as a more modern Pop/RnB singer (like Leona, or in Idol terms like Jordin was or JHud was with her first single Spotlight).

Whether she is as successful as Leona was, or Chris Rene, or anyone else remains to be seen – but I firmly believe Cowell and LA Reid will do everything in their power to ensure she is given every chance to be…

  • Anonymous

They are doing what needs to be done in order to improve her chances of mainstream success.
Right now Melanie is of interest to no one. Newer mind the press, half of the people who voted for her, forgot her name. (That is just how the reality-contestant story goes).
Once the TPTB stage her dramatic return with a new single and glamorous body the press will be far more inclined to give her the time of day because of this Cinderella story, and she will be well coached to handle the outpour of interest.
And of cause for one (rapidly losing weight) Adele there is all the rest of the pop divas. And they are fit.

Nice, although obvious move LA Reed.

I see people are still assuming that Josh K’s hair is greasy instead of simply a ton of conditioner and hair products to keep it from getting frizzy……so once a rumor is out there, it’s out there for good I guess….which makes me feel badly for Melanie, cuz apparently she will now be “stuck” with a ridiculous visual defect like Josh’s hair inaccuracy.  Now when she steps on stage, people will be judging her before she even opens her mouth….has she lost?  is she heavier? look at those legs…..she has a double chin…..etc etc…..that’s too bad………makes me sad…and I was never a Melanie fan.  I wish this story hadn’t hit the media…there is no turning back now, what’s done is done.  Josh’s hair, Chris’s attitude…now Melanie’s weight.  When is it going to be about the music?

  • Anonymous

Calling her ugly is just way over the line.  She is NOT ugly without makeup and certainly isn’t the only woman to look a lot different when not wearing any.

  • Anonymous

Her performance on the charts right after the show and the epic (no pun intended) pepsi song fail should give them an indication that they shouldn’t waste time with her.

The Pepsi song wasn’t pushed as a single, but it did go to number one on the Dance charts, where it stayed for quite a while.  They never released any other type of song for her, and Itunes just had her live performances, with crowd noise included, so I don’t see how this is a sign of failure.

  • Anonymous

I think actually instead of treating her like a winner of a TV show, they are doing more typical artist development, and they want her launch to be as successful as possible.  LA Reid knows he has something special, and I think instead of going for the quickie launch, he’s going to make sure he has his ducks in a row.  Heck, if i were Melanie, coming from where she did, I’d be happy to have someone paying for a trainer and helping me be healthy.  Her tweets have been about exactly that, that she wants to be as healthy as she can be.

  • Listening

I think they’ve absolutely waited to long for Melanie we never got to
know her before she won. This is what I recollect girl who got kicked
out ,returned won, had a big voice and hid her Jamaican accent that pops
up occasionally oh yeah no personality. If you have someone who showed
no personality during her entire run on the show you get them out quick
so people don’t forget em. I keep thinking they better hurry up and get
some new material for Melanie and Astro. Yep Astro i’m waiting more
eagerly for his music than Melanie’s w/ hers i’m just curious about what
it’s going to sound like. While with Astro I KNOW I want to listen to
it. I know Astro came out w/ an actual mixtape but it was short and
never really pushed, it was short but real good though.

This does not surprise me at all and has the kiss of Simon all over it.  Man has one of the worst fat phobias around.  Remember this is the same guy who made fun of Mandisa’s weight and refused to sign Take That because he thought Gary Barlow was chunky.

Astro’s mixtape was just that, a mixtape that he dropped on his own.  It wasn’t supposed to do anything.  Astro is getting bits of promo here and there amongst the hip hop media (which I doubt most people here follow).  And if you follow his Twitter you can see who he’s working with (a lot of MAJOR producers like Timbaland and Pharrel).  He often posts video diaries as well.  And of course there was his acting gig.  He performs from time to time as well.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_ACMLXLYSSX73RNYQOUZWSO2I4U Enough already!

Considering how Simon pushed her down everyone’s throats to insure she won season 1 of X Factor, that they now have her in hiding for a serious makeover is rather ridiculous.   Didn’t they take any of these factors into consideration before insuring that she won no matter what?   This is really so OTT as to be funny!

It’s show biz.  They know going in that looks matter.  Part of their job.  There are exceptions.  Adele is so freaking talented nobody cares about her weight.  But there’s a very short list of people out there who can sing like that.

If Melanie looks older, it’s because of the clothes that someone on the show picked for her.  Not because of her weight, IMO.

But what does ‘hiding’ them say?  That they’re not good enough.  If that’s how they feel, then cut Melanie from her contract, IMO.  If she’s not good enough now, she likely will never be in their eyes.

It’s just a marketing ploy.  Think of Lady Gaga incubating in her egg before showtime. :op

I’m not worried about Melanie. I think her lack of public appearances has to do with her album. There may be a liitle bit of image work but I think her chances of a strong debut are good.

Simon made comments to David Cook about his weight, too.

I agree with your assessments. Nothing wrong with Melanie getting fit. If they’re debuting her through the next season of X-Factor, it could work out. Why not? I rather she comes out with great music. Plus with this news out, it could bring in more attention. People will want to see the results! I can’t wait. She was my favorite since her audition.

BTW, I am so excited about Astro. He was one of my favorites in X-Factor. Dude has skills. Thanks for the link to the interview!

Yeah, she will get praised by some, but snubbed by some women that say she “sold out” or caved to Hollywood standards. Of course, its easier to go along with expectations than try to fight the system. Especially with a $5m contract.

Lauren’s rocking a bikini now. No more chubby teen jokes.

    But Jordin was pretty…

Waiting until the new season to put out new music by the first season winner was Simon’s plan all along, so it has nothing to do with molding Melanie into a better pop star. The funny thing is they’ll be heralding on the show what a big prize winning “X Factor” is when the winner hasn’t even put out a single yet!

I am probably the only person on earth that thinks Adele is overrated.  I have liked her songs when someone else sings them more than when she does…but I caught on to her too late, by then I had already heard Haley singing “Rolling In The Deep.”

Melanie tweeted she had dinner with Cher Lloyd:

And here is a photo of Melanie and LA Reid:

So, girl is eating and doesn’t look starved.

ETA: Actually this dinner was attended by several Epic artists, like Melanie, Cher, Marcus Canty, Karmin, etc. and label people, I think also LA Reid.

Melanie is pretty by “normal” standards, but if she’s trying to lose weight, I don’t see how that differs from what every other entertainer, male or female, does to succeed. Just because we don’t see her doesn’t meanv she’s under lockdown in a remote spa eating celery sticks. If the industry is superficial, it’s because of the media and consumers. Managers give advice based on what consumers appear to want, and are often too cautious to venture outside the box. When someone else’s career is at stake, I can’t blame them.

Adele is an exception because aside from her amazing voice, her career was launched in the United Kingdom by a British recording company. Once she became internationally successful, Americans caught on (thanks to SNL).  I think Adele is gorgeous, but whether people want to admit it, weight matters a lot here. She would have had a tough time launching her career in the USA. Maybe not 30-40 years ago, but definitely now.

By the way, Melanie doesn’t speak “island patois”, she speaks English with a Caribbean accent. Patois is a different language: Usually a combination of French + English and occasionally Dutch or Spanish (e.g. In Curacao, it’s Dutch+English and they call it “papiamento”). I know Americans find it strange that Melanie has two accents, but that’s pretty common for a Caribbean person living in the USA. Americans don’t understand the dialect anyway!
