The X factor 2010 winner who had a number one hit with his debut When We Collide, is currently in Los Angeles where he is recording new material. Rebecca Ferguson: next she takes Manhattan
Rebecca Ferguson was never your typical X Factor finalist. As the Liverpool mother of two hits America, Jude Rogers joins her for shoe-shopping and ‘a proper brew’

The first thing you notice about Rebecca Ferguson is her voice. “D’youse want a drink?” she says, tottering across the room in 7in Louboutins. “I’ve got cold drinks – but do you fancy a tea or coffee?” Her accent is thick scouse, her tone gently concerned. It’s not quite what you’d expect from a 25-year-old pop star, especially in a hotel suite high above misty Manhattan. “A proper brew,” she approves when I ask for tea.

But then Ferguson is not your typical X Factor stock. In 2010 the mother of two, an unusually shy competitor, came runner-up in the show. Hers is an astonishing voice – bluesy and husky, characterful and deep. She signed to Epic soon after, and got picked up by a publicity team that also looks after Yoko Ono and Kate Bush, but her success has been oddly mixed: the last two singles flopped, but her debut album Heaven, released six months ago, is now nearing double platinum status.

He has risen from the ashes of bankruptcy to accumulate a £200 million fortune.

And X Factor supremo Simon Cowell has admitted that his meteoric rise to the top of the music industry was prompted not by a simple love of money – but by revenge.

In a revealing interview with BBC Radio 4’s Today programme to be aired tomorrow the 52-year-old music millionaire calls himself ‘weird’ as he confesses he is driven by a desire to get his own back on his enemies.

Asked by interviewer Jim Naughtie if revenge is the key to his ambition, he says: ‘Yes. I mean you know. You’ve worked in this business for a long time, you know what it’s like. They’re not very nice people.

‘Trying to find nice people who are loyal and who you can trust in the music and television business – they are diamonds.

‘And there were a couple of people who made it difficult for me when I was starting off, or trying to get started.

‘I had a lot of people who were very negative.’

In their semi-final, Jedward may seem positively tame and boring next to such acts as:

Montenegro’s Rambo Amadeus with “Euro Neuro” http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D6S-FNLv2jQ

San Marino’s Valentina Monetta with “The Social Network Song (OH OH — uh OH OH) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PqwBh9hq9PE

Austria’s Trackschittaz with “Woki mit dem Popo (Shake Your Bum)” http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BKQf8Z5uWQ8

and Russia’s Buranovskiye Babushki with “Party For Everybody” http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WKNRGc71hjc

The first three are thought to pretty much have no chance (for good reason), but Russia’s actually running 3rd in the betting lines behind heavy favorite Sweden (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4nJcmLMb5to )

  • Mateja Praznik

Montenegro is one of my favorites!

I also love Slovenia (my country), Serbia, Sweden, Iceland, Ireland, Greece, UK, Italy.

Sweden is this year’s big favorite: http://youtu.be/4nJcmLMb5to

I knew that Simon wasn’t going to support Marcus.  That’s a shame, he’s incredibly talented, so I hope that someone else will sign him.  He didn’t sell a lot of albums, because his album was just thrown together, and tossed out to the public without the usual hype and build up that Simon is known for.

  • http://twitter.com/MoriaPolonius Moria Polonius

I’ll be totally voting Russia, I think. I can’t get over the fact that Russians actually voted them in, something like that deserves support.

  • Mateja Praznik

Heh, I have pretty good instincts when it comes to predicting post show success and I never thought Marcus would do well. Quick album release was his idea, so I can’t blame Simon.

Hopefully Simon at least saves Little Mix.
