Gary Barlow’s £2 million X Factor return: Simon Cowell brings singer back despite book claims he was ‘too scripted’

ITV moved to counter revelations that Cowell had wanted the Take That star singer sacked because of lacklustre ratings last year.

The broadcaster confirmed he would return – the first official announcement about the judging panel for the 2012 series.

The announcement came as details of Cowell’s ‘despair’ at The X Factor last year were revealed.

It says Cowell complained the contestants that featured were the worst ever and wanted to replace Barlow with a record industry executive.

Syco’s Charles Garland promoted to worldwide CEO
Syco Entertainment has promoted COO Charles Garland to the role of worldwide CEO with immediate effect.

The new role adds oversight of the company’s global TV business to Garland’s remit, which includes Simon Cowell’s “The X Factor” and “Got Talent” franchises.

Garland joined Syco in March 2011 from Crystal Entertainment, which he founded in 2007 and ran as CEO to connect talent and brands.

Before that, he served at “American Idol” producer 19 Entertainment for eight years.

Doug Morris, chairman and CEO of Sony Music, said he was “pleased” to have Garland in the key role.

“He is a proven leader who along with the Syco team will continue to build on Syco’s successes and further expand Syco’s worldwide businesses,” he said.

Syco’s CEO role had been unfilled since the departure of Ellis Watson more than a year ago.

I liked Aiden Grimshaw; I hope his single does well.  Season 7 was one of UK X Factor’s best.

I thought that last season of UK X-Factor was far better than US X-Factor. The top four was my favourite group of finalists from the three seasons I have watched the show on this blog. All of them could SANG and perform like no one’s business. Plus, Little Mix winning was so moving to watch. And the judges created their own set of controversy. Is it just me, or when there is a competent season of a reality singing show, where all the contestants are not
complete jokes (even a couple of the joke contestants from last year’s X-Factor were decent enough singers), people whine “they don’t have interesting personalities, they are not stars, wah wah wah” ?  I guess people like it when there is a dash of tomfoolery thrown in. I’m there for the music, man, LOL, I don’t watch much reality programming for reason, I watch for talent.

Simon Cowell is a bitch. Like for real, if the public didn’t have a problem with last season, he wouldn’t treat the contestants like shit. What an ass. Someone made a great comment in that “Sun” artcle that summed up Cowell to a “T”:

    abcat:
It is sad how this man seems to be defined only by the constant hunt for ratings and record sales, rather than any desire to produce something of value or meaning to the music industry. He’s just sooo greedy and out of touch.

I did like last season. Their two “joke contestants” – Johnny Robinson and Kitty Brucknell – were in reality good singers. I would love to see a cabaret show with Johnny in it. Although, their unintended joke contestant – Frankie Cocozza – did stink majorly.

I didn’t like the last season (season 8) as much as season 7.

Maybe because I always knew One Direction would be big and they were my guilty pleasure from the moment I saw the group together. And I adored Rebecca Ferguson. Surprisingly, my two favorites from that season went on to outsell the eventual winner and 4th place finisher. Overall, I thought the season was strong, with a good variety of talent. The old judging panel was the best judging panel I’ve ever seen.

Season 8 … I thought Misha B killed it every week and her not making the finale was devastating. The other contestant that provided some good performances was Amelia Lily, who made the finale, but was  obviously pushed aside for Little Mix and Marcus in the finale.

Marcus was a pleasant guy and generally solid performer, but I always thought he wouldn’t make it as a recording artist, his future is West End, IMO.

And Little Mix … Thought they were better than the girlbands in the past, but they were still over hyped.

The new judges just didn’t measure up to the old ones.

LOL One Direction was, and remains, my guilty pleasure.  I liked them from the moment Niall came out singing like there could be no greater joy on Earth than what he was doing, while Harry was trying to look like he wanted to start a fight.  In their interviews they came across as slightly goofy (except Liam) but genuinely nice boys. I could see how girls would like them while not offending their purse controlling parents, so I could see them making it big.  To this day, I have yet to see traces of a jerk in any of them, they still seem like such nice kids.  I just want them to to well.  It doesn’t hurt that a couple of them can actually sing.

ITA. As I said previously, I like these guys and mind you I am old enough to be their (step)mother. They’re adorable and they don’t sound too bad. Plus, it helps that the songs are catchy.
