‘I was a zombie. Drinking too much, depressed, crying’: Olly Murs on the darker side of fame
Don’t let his cheeky grin fool you. Olly Murs may be pop’s Mr Chirpy but he tells Event how he’s survived a career-threatening meltdown, a feud with his twin brother that’s split his family… and the curse of The X Factor

For a man whose career has been built on easy, breezy angst-free pop, Olly Murs is not used to dwelling on the darker side of fame.

In the six years since shooting to stardom on The X Factor, Murs has made £8 million, bought himself a five-bedroom house in Essex, sold more than ten million albums (outselling Taylor Swift, Beyoncé and Take That in 2014), had four No 1s and nine Top 20 singles, has toured the world with Robbie Williams and One Direction, sung on last year’s Band Aid 30, and been name-checked by Kate Moss as ‘hot-cute’.

It is more than he ever dreamed would happen when he grinned and shimmied his way through to the 2009 X Factor finals, let alone during his endless shifts in an Essex jam factory before he tried to make it. But it was, he now reveals, also a future he almost blew before it had really begun.

Sitting in the offices of his west London publicists, Murs shakes his head as he recalls the moment he, in his own words, ‘just totally lost the plot’.

‘I think you start out and you think “This is it!” And you think it’s all about just singing and dancing and winning people over.

‘You don’t realise how much you have to be prepared mentally and emotionally for this.

‘Right at the beginning, I was so new to all of this, so new to everything that I was just going for it so hard and so fast, and after a few months I didn’t really recognise myself.
