Will Young Won Pop Idol 10 Years Ago Today

Today is a very special anniversary for the Idol franchise.

10 years ago today Will Young won Pop Idol.

On February 9, 2002, then 23-year-old singer beat Gareth Gates in the finale of the first series of Idol. He received 4.6 million of the 8.7 million votes.

A few hours ago Will Young tweeted:

Ten years ago today I won pop idol. Since then I have still not achieved my dream of a tupperware range. Life can be cruel……

Pop Idol was hosted by Ant and Dec (they host “Britain’s Got Talent” and “I’m a Celebrity … Get Me Out of Here!” now) and featured Simon Cowell, Pete Waterman, Nicki Chapman and Neil Fox as judges. It ran from 2001 to 2003 (Season two was won by Michelle McManus.) Pop Idol spawned spin-off shows in 42 different countries, including American Idol. In The UK, Pop Idol was replaced by The X Factor in 2004.

Will Young’s debut single Anything Is Possible/Evergreen was released on February 25, 2002 and sold 1.1 million copies in it’s first week on sale.
