RIAA Certification has absolutely nothing to do with sales. It is based on shipments and it just they will certify before sales catch up as long as they are confident that the what was shipped will not be returned. RIAA audit for certification includes info from retailers as to whether they expect to return units. The record company can also dump to bookclubs and such to met shipment levels. As long as they receive the minimum required wholesale price RIAA counts it. Because the cost of the certification is paid by the record company (or actually the artist as it is charged to the project) and plaques are issued to everyone credited (also charged to the project) the decision to certify or not is not always based on simply reaching the milestones. Some artist, or companies may chose to certify as soon as possible, others may wait. U2 fans are always complaining because the band waits ages to certify on a lot of things. Sometimes it depends on how important those plaques are to the people on the project.

Yeah, album certification has everything to do with shipments. I guess Jive plans to push Britney’s singles to radio until she finally sells 1 million albums. Same strategy is used for Katy Perry, Bruno Mars and Rihanna.

Remember how Katy Perry debuted at #1 with 192K and everyone was disappointed because “California Gurls” was a massive hit and “Teenage Dream” was storming up the radio charts? But Katy’s label just kept on releasing singles to radio and the album kept selling and selling. It’s at 1,4 million now, 4th single “E.T.” is still at #1 and 5th single, “Last Friday Night” will be released sooner or later.

And Bruno Mars debuted with what 55K or so? Now he is about to reach 1 million and he is on his 3rd single.

I think we can consider RwtR as a success when the irony of her singing that song’s lyrics in that setting did not cause the Idol stage to be sucked into an alternate space-time dimension.

Ha! So right. Thanks for the morning laugh.

Isn’t Bruno on one of the WMG’s imprints?

You are right. I was just thinking about all of the albums that were certified in the last two or three week, and was wondering if there was some connection, since the labels probably had to apply around the same time.

I wouldn’t put Bruno or Katy in the same category as Britney, since their singles have all been hits, and hits move albums. In the bubble we think that that the only week that matters is the debut week, but that’s not the case. Bruno is showing how a stable career is built.

I don’t blame Jive for releasing more singles for Britney, since if this album doesn’t do well it could really hurt her image.

This week I might have bought the Top 6 album, but when I heard Scotty’s horrendous arrangement and that James didn’t have the acapella start I saved my money.

I don’t find it odd at all that Crystal didn’t sell much. For all the filler in the results show, why didn’t they have Ryan properly introduce her, and talk about her album for a minute? Then he should have mentioned the title of her next single, had her sing , and then a few words afterward. It was so rushed, it was like they were almost embarrassed to have her on the show.

At a guess I would say that has more to do with the fact that all the past Idol alum are on a different label than the one involved with the show so they might have them on but are not going to care about pimping their albums. The Show itself could care less about actual sales for former Idols since they are now working with UMG. The image of the alums is more important than the sales. Former Idols are now no different really than any artist looking for a results show slot.

I think it was more of a time issue. The show was filler, but Nigel sees that filler as “good tv”. It also may have something to do with Crystal not being signed to 19M, since David was given a very good platform, but he, unlike Crystal, is one of Simon Fuller’s favorites.

You mean poor sales numbers could damage Britney’s image even more than she’s already managed to do herself? ;)

I didn’t see GNL sales posted anywhere so here they are:

    RCAEd
The GNL CD/DVD sold 2,021 this week(+3% vs. LW) for a 5-wk total of 27,825, & it bounced back to #2 on the Music DVD Chart
