surprised rick dees has held onto BTIKM for so long.  Usually he is much quicker than AT40 to get songs on the countdown, they rise faster, but then are dropped fasterin favor of newer songs…his show is usually more reflective of the current chart than at40, which includes recurrents.

Yay for Trespassing hanging in there at #2 on Itunes 5 days after release.  I now know of two people (one middle-aged female, one boy in his early twenties) who formerly were not Adam fans who have said they are buying the album, so if my experience is any indication, Adam seems to be starting to broaden his fan base during this second era.

Is NCOE moving up on itunes?  Is radio actually working? *fingers crossed*

  • mmb

whoa, when did ncoe break back into the itunes top 100??  i didn’t even notice that.  that may be one of the bigger idol bumps for a single we’ve seen this season, especially one that has been available on itunes for several weeks.  WWFM keeps inching closer to 2 mm mark..may actually get there someday…no time soon…but someday, maybe

  • http://twitter.com/Quu3 Q3

Yes, NCOE is moving up on iTunes — but not enough radio to do this. It
must be because of Idol. Was not in the Top 200 prior an hour before
    Idol.

ETA: NCOE have been moving steadily up since Idol. Entered the Top 100 about 3 hours ago.

Adam was #9 on MTV 10 on Top today but they did not promote NCOE —
because that video is out next week. They might have used a few clips
from the new video (looks like the location they used) and used BTIKM to
    promote the album.

  • seashellz51

Just a quick question for whoever knows…. I see NCOE at #94 overall  and #32 in Pop iTunes so Im wondering where the #77 comes from?

  • http://twitter.com/Quu3 Q3

I have been watching iTunes all morning and never saw NCOE at #77. It is now up to #94.

ETA: It could be from very early this morning.

If radio doesn’t get on board  for NCOE, I don’t know what else he can do. He has already gone way over and beyond: made and absolutely fabulous pop album which is apparently debuting at #1, visited countless radio stations to display his awesomeness for their listeners, performed or is about to preform at their big spring concerts, garnered a ton of medium attention and good reviews, charted on or near the top of all online best sellers list, let the DJ/PD pick the single.  What more can they what?
I am cautiously hopeful that come the official adds date we will see a ton of stations add and spin.

I expect NCOE to get a lot of adds and a real shot on the radio. RCA would not have Adam doing so many summer radio promo concerts if they did not have some kind of deal to get some airplay. He has done 3 promos for Z100 alone.Plus there are so many hints of support from key stations — mostly Mainstream Top 40 stations that they are going to play it.I am beyond hopeful. If NCOE gets a shot and does nothing, I’m OK with that. But if it does not get a shot, I will be very surprised. Off course, if I was a PD I would have picked a few other tracks as the 2nd single before NCOE. But NCOE is a fine choice.

  • Anonymous

I just want NCOE to do well enough to give one of the dance tracks that he co wrote. and that represent his artistic sensibilities much better than NCOE or BTIKM, a chance to be released as a single.  I think one of the so cool tracks like Shady, Trespassing, Cuckoo, etc. could really smash and turn him into the unique star he should be.

  • http://www.facebook.com/pam.hart4 Pam Hart

So if it broke the top 100, then what is an estimate of the sales? As I recall, TVOL did not break the top 100, and sold 7K. Could we hope that NCOE sells closer to 10K? I am not sure how long the bump needs to last to be able to guesstimate.

  • mmb

I think the 77 is from the feed without the explicit tracks

Kris was interviewed during the Rick Dees countdown show (right after John Mayer’s single was played, which was the #11 song on countdown). They played some of The Vision Of Love, all of LLWD and talked about Kris’s album coming out on the 22nd. Good promo!

They played the entire song at the beginning of the countdown as the Sure Shot.

Nice to see Haley on the iTunes album chart.

  • YankeeFan08

I saw on Twitter that WWFS played NCOE this AM.  I think this was the first spin they gave NCOE (although until recently they were playing BTIKM).  KTU is also playing it (and not just overnight spins).  It would be awesome if NCOE got the support of Z100, and I am cautiously optimistic that it will.  They are big Adam fans.  Danielle Monaro from the Elvis Duran Morning Show tweeted yesterday how much she loved Trespassing … “Loved driving around NYC last night listening to the new@adamlambert album! There is NOT one bad song! The album is AMAZING!”

Oh that makes sense. But is not really useful because explicit track are on Billboard Charts. NCOE is holding at #95 for the last two updates. Looks like a plateau. It is going to need something to give it a kick up the chart. But at least it is heading up. I hope the video is great and gives it a push. And a bit of radio support would be nice.

  • YankeeFan08

I wish the adds date was this week for NOCE.  Not sure why they chose next week when it’s Memorial Day.  How will that work?  Both HAC and CHR will add on Tuesday?

Adam will be interviewed tomorrow on NPR Radio.  I know that’s a lot of ears so at least there’s that.

HAC Mediabase chart update for Saturday.

Kris did indeed pass Bieber, while Rihanna passed Adam. Haley remains in same chart position she was yesterday (those are the only 3 I’ve been tracking on a daily basis, which is why I can’t say what’s going on with Carrie, Daughtry, Carly Rae, 1D, etc.)

It’s interesting that the AI for NCOE is higher than both TVOL and Free.  I think NCOE will continue to move in the right direction on HAC once it officially goes for adds.  I’m actually more excited about what it might do on CHR especially if it can get Z100 and Q102 on board.  Q102 are also big fans of Adam.

  • Anonymous

WWFS just started giving TVOL some non-overnight spins (in addition to continuing the overnight ones), so I would bet they will start NCOE off with mainly ON spins as well and then gradually add daytime/evening ones?

  • YankeeFan08

Aww, maybe it will get there.  It seems new fans are checking out Adam’s music.  FYE is back on the iTunes pop chart (currently at 192).

  • Anonymous

It’s also got a higher AI than Daughtry’s single. Which is nice, but means little until the spin total starts to build.

ETA – I mean it means little in terms of the actual chart ranks. It obviously means something in terms of the music getting heard by more listeners/potential new fans who might then go out and buy the song.

  • http://twitter.com/crackletlightin B

That was a pretty long clip of TVOL on Vh1 – good exposure.  Hope he gets on the countdown next week.

Stopped by Best Buy to pick up another Trespassing Deluxe for a friend.
There were 2 Deluxes and 2 regulars by the new releases left.

Me to store clerk: How’s the CD selling? #cray
Store Clerk: We can’t keep up.
Me: How many CDs did you get in. #cray
Store Clerk: 300. Were on the second restock. /

  • http://www.facebook.com/pam.hart4 Pam Hart

I’d like to think that it means something, no matter how small. Out of all four of those songs, isn’t NCOE the only one in the top 400 on iTunes? I heard NCOE was in the low 200s prior to Idol.

  • http://www.facebook.com/pam.hart4 Pam Hart

I’ve seen FYE rise on Amazon too. Currently it’s #648 but I saw it in the 300-400s. Before Trespassing came out, I believe it was out of the top 1000.

  • http://www.facebook.com/pam.hart4 Pam Hart

YAY!!! I’ve been a little concerned as I went to Best Buy yesterday and they fully stocked. Would be great if it was because it had just been restocked.

  • Anonymous

I just want to say that my Mom and sister who have satellite radio have both asked me about Kris Allen in the last week since they know I watch AI. They heard VOL on the radio and both seriously love it and they have never followed him in any capacity. Just a little evidence that it’s a great song and if someone would give it a damn shot I think it would hit. I’m thrilled with what I’ve heard of Kris’ album because it showcases all of the qualities that made him my second fav of his season behind Adam. I will be buying and I didn’t buy the first album. I hate when people lump him and Cook in with Lee and Phil. Kris and David are miles ahead in talent and artistry.

mmb: I think the 77 is from the feed without the explicit tracks

That could be it or it could be Itunes combining the single version of NCOE with the album version of NCOE.

I think this is the 1st week Good Girl has been on Rick Dee’s countdown but I could be wrong.

  • mmb

Yes that is what they will do. That’s what they did with BTIKM and I don’t see why NCOE would be any different. Overnight, then add, then some daytime

  • http://profile.yahoo.com/PVEFG2TOUIXSROKUSO2O2DOWWE Taylor

Having a good AI means that NCOE has some larger radio stations on board and they are spinning it during the daytime hours. That means more ears are hearing it which actually means a great deal in how radio stations are viewing the potential of a single to take off.

The last thing you want is a lot of overnight spins. If stations are spinning a single only during these vampire hours for several weeks, the majority of the time it isn’t a good sign.

  • Anonymous

Well a higher AI means it’s being played in a time slot with more listeners, which might result in more sales. So sure, it definitely means something. :)

But in terms of actual chart rankings, spins are more important than AI.

  • Anonymous

    that’s great to hear.

  • Anonymous

The audience impression number does matter, since that means that a song is reaching more people.  It doesn’t help a lot if a station is spinning a song three times a day if all of those spins happen over night.  But, in this case, it doesn’t seem to make a lot of sense to hold NCOE AI over those other three songs, since they are all pretty close, and before the album release and AI promotion, NCOE wasn’t doing anything on Itunes either.  Now that we are a few days removed from that promotion the song looks like it is falling back down the chart.

Who knows what RCA has done, but if a label is going to make a deal with stations to play a song, I think that they would make sure that those plans kick in prior to the album coming out, so that the airplay can help promote the song.  Of course, that type of deal is illegal, unless the stations is upfront with their listeners about the arrangement. I’m sue that RCA hopes that the radio concerts will result in airplay, but that’s different than actually coming up with a deal to exchange visits for spins.

I have been wondering why TYC’s deluxe addition is only available on Kris’ site?  From my layman point of view, this seems like a less than smart marketing decision.  If most people are like me, and I think I’m pretty normal, they don’t want to buy from someone’s fan site, but rather from they place the always buy their music on line itunes, amazon, etc.  Can someone tell me if they know why this could be a sales advantage to offer it this way?  Adam’s deluxe is available everywhere and easily out sells the standard.

  • Anonymous

When people say that itunes has sells about 38% of music, I wonder what percentage of albums they sell.  I imagine the vast majority of the music they sell are singles.  I have been pondering about Adam’s album sales every which way I can, and am driving myself cuckoo.

  • Anonymous

I have been wondering why TYC’s deluxe addition is only available on Kris’ site?

Itunes is also selling the deluxe edition for $11.99 and the standard for $9.99.  I’m sure that the deluxe is also available at other places too, but I’m not going to research that.  Maybe you are thinking of the fan edition, which is just available on the website, but I’m sure that the acoustic cd, which is the only thing that’s not included with the deluxe album, will be available on it’s own at some later date.

BTW, the advantage for the label in offering products through the website is that they don’t have to split the money with a retailer.

  • Anonymous

Thanks, that makes sense.  I was really thinking more about the CD from Amazon or B&N than the download.  I think a lot of Kris’ fans want a “hard copy”  and the easier it is to get the better I would think.

  • http://profile.yahoo.com/PVEFG2TOUIXSROKUSO2O2DOWWE Taylor

NCOE is not falling back down the chart! It is the highest it has been since the AI performance at #93.

  • Anonymous

There is a Walmart exclusixe De Luxe version of Listen Up!, which is similar to the ITunes Deluxe, so it looks that they are the only store to sell the De Luxe hard copy.

  • Anonymous

Yes, it has been climbing since the AI performance.

  • http://twitter.com/Quu3 Q3

“elliegrll: BTW, the advantage for the label in offering products through the
website is that they don’t have to split the money with a retailer.”

RCA/Sony artists’ stores are operated by a retailer — Play Ltd. MyPlayDirect

Here is the statement you will find on all the sites, including Kris’ and Adam’s: NOTE: “Charges will appear as MyPlay Direct. Credit Cards will be charged on ship date.” It is also disclosed when you make a purchase.

—AdamOfficial has Trespassing CD or Download on sale — $6.99 for the Regular and $8.99 for the Deluxe.

ETA: Corrected my post — my point is there is a retailer involved and the expenses of a retail operation are still there. MyPlayDirect even has to deliver a profit to Sony Corporate.

  • http://www.facebook.com/pam.hart4 Pam Hart

Now FYE is #447 on Amazon. This has to be new fans checking it out. :)

  • Anonymous

I went ahead and researched. Looks like the Kris Deluxe album is available digitally on iTunes and on his fan site. Amazon, Walmart, Best Buy and Target aren’t selling it online. Maybe it will be only in store for them.

  • http://twitter.com/whiskey401 Whiskey

elliegrll: But, in this case, it doesn’t seem to make a lot of sense to hold NCOE AI over those other three songs, since they are all pretty close, and before the album release and AI promotion, NCOE wasn’t doing anything on Itunes either.

Does CHR AI not count? Right now NCOE AI is more than double TVOL and Free songs.

Q3, MyPlayDirect is Sony. From MyPlayDirect website.

“MyPlay Direct is dedicated to connecting fans with the artists and the music they love. With the hottest tracks and videos, up-to-the-minute news and artist updates, and special (and often exclusive!) products from the biggest names in music, MyPlay Direct is the one stop shop for the true music fan. MyPlay Direct, Inc. is a division of Sony Music Entertainment (a wholly owned subsidiary of Sony Corporation of America).”

  • Anonymous

I know at least a couple people who have already received their copies of Kris’ album. So I guess those would count as street violations rather than 1st week sales?

  • Anonymous

Not if they were shipped and they received. It’s only sales at retail outlets that are sold prematurely that are street violations I believe.

Does CHR AI not count? Right now NCOE AI is more than double TVOL and Free songs.

Sure CHR counts.  I forgot that the last update that we had for NCOE on that chart showed a healthy AI of 1.7, so I see why 1.7+1.5 would be a reason to gloat.  Maybe will get another update on it tomorrow, and it will have another healthy AI, as well as have gotten its bullet back.

Oh you are so right! I will note that my post is wrong!

ETA: Fixed it. But there is a retailer involved — the retail expenses do not vanish because it is a captive. If fact, Walmart almost certainly has lower operating costs than MyPlayDirect.

This is quite different than when an artist sells merchandise directly.

If the venue meets Soundscan’s reporting criteria and the label has paid the Soundscan fee (which Interscope certainly has), then sales count.

There are a few venue types that never count toward Soundscan, including churches, libraries, malls, offices, campgrounds, and people’s homes or yards. So when Jason Castro did a show in a condo community room when promoting his debut album (I’m not making this up!), it probably didn’t count toward official sales, on the basis that it’s a yard-equivalent. The Soundscan rules, in all their tedious glory, are here.

Thanks Eilonwy. Those rules are interesting, I’m impressed by how clearly they’re written.

Actually I was really asking if its a street violation because of the timing as the release date is the Tuesday and the event is Monday eve, but I guess it could count if the pickup is after midnight! Or does it anyway?

  • Anonymous

I don’t think Monday is an issue. Many high profile releases happen on Mondays and those count toward first week sales. If the signing was on a Sunday then it might be a street violations situation.

Just returned from buying my sister a Trespassing CD after she went nuts for mine yesterday.  First stop Target, all sold out.  Next stop Best Buy had 3 standard and 5 deluxe.  Now the small city of San Luis Obispo has only 7 Trespassing CDs available.  I have often read here about the shortages with an “oh sure” attitude, so I apologize for that.  I hope they are geared up to restock soon as I would hate to have sales lost due to supply problems.

For some reason Pam always leaves the explicit songs off of her chart update. I’ve never been able to figure out why as they obviously still count, explicit label or not.

  • Anonymous

Actually that’s not true. It’s the AI that Billboard take into account not the chart position on the radio airplay chart. 1m AI = 1pt on the BBHot100.

  • Anonymous

I think that Girlygirl meant the Mediabase chart.

  • Anonymous

I think that it is because she url she uses doesn’t include the explicits. They used to be included by default in the old feed, but are not in the new one unless you have ‘/explicit=true/’ in the url.

  • Anonymous

This makes sense. She should probably change that though as she is providing incorrect charts

  • http://twitter.com/leilamaurizia2 leilamaurizia

I think this is the 1st week Good Girl has been on Rick Dee’s countdown but I could be wrong.

3rd week on the countdown with a 39-38-35 run so far.

  • Anonymous

But really, chart positions on the mediabase chart become meaningless if the AI is low. If a song reaches, say, the top 20 with a very low AI for its chart position, as The Truth and to a lesser extent BTIKM did, it really does not count for much.  The chief reasons the mediabase chart is important is because radio play usually equates to sales and because the AI it records counts towards the BBHot100. Just because one song is higher than another  on the chart does not mean that radio will actually consider it a greater hit. PD’s will look at a lot more than just the chart ranking.  If a song is just chiefly being spun in the dead of night it will not be considered a success whatever its chart position.  This is a general comment by the way, not aimed at Kris, Haley or Adam’s new singles, none of which are far enough into their run to really tell how they’ll ultimately do.

  • Axxxel

I was surprised to learn that Adam’s deluxe is selling much better than the standard… Hopefully the Kris’ fans will have the deluxe version of his album also in (internet)stores fast…

The Truth and BTIKM ended their runs with similar AIs, and both sold around the same amount, so there’s no “to a lesser extent” needed.

I think that in these cases, the sales happened when Jason purchased the cds from his label.  I would guess that this is just like when an artist has to buy cds from the label in order to resell them at concerts.

Q3 said: ETA: Fixed it. But there is a retailer involved — the retail expenses do not vanish because it is a captive. If fact, Walmart almost certainly has lower operating costs than MyPlayDirect.
This is quite different than when an artist sells merchandise directly.

No, it’s the label that’s selling the merchandise directly, which is what I said. The money remains in house at the label.   Considering that you didn’t know that MyPlayDirect is part of Sony, I’m not sure how you know what their operating costs are.  Having this service is another way for Sony to make money, and they indicated a few years ago that they were going to try and do more to get consumers to buy directly from them, even letting consumers know that they can buy mp3s from them.

  • YankeeFan08

The big difference is BTIKM charted on the BB Hot 100 at #76 while The Truth did not chart.

Well now that’s something to brag about.  What happened next?

Nice update today for NCOE … both bullet and AI!

BTIKM is still selling though (and I’m as surprised as anyone to see it rising on iTunes). Hey, NCOE is charting on pop in Canada!

  • Anonymous

    BTIKM = 123,000
    TT = 91,000

  • Anonymous

That’s not the last total that I saw.

I think the TT and BTIKM performed/are preforming about the same.    I do recall seeing that TT sold over 100,000 or so with Brian posted updated numbers. It’s hard to know how current Brian’s numbers are because sometimes he just used the last numbers he received (for songs off the BB200) and they are not the most recent undate.

Now how is TVOL doing compared to TT and how is NCOE doing compared to BTIKM.   I think it is probably best to compare those songs with each other.

Mateja, in case you are reading, this is specially for you. See what I saw on my twitter feed about 2 days ago:

Loved driving around NYC last night listening to the new @adamlambert album! There is NOT one bad song! The album is AMAZING!

Meaning contrary to what you’ve been saying the XFactor team does not have superior song writers to Adam’s and it is therefore why he’s been strugglin

  • Anonymous

So it is not true his struggling has been because of bad writers or songs.

I heard Stefano’s single on the radio in the Woodstock area today! Kind of a surprise but it sounded good.

Pam, does your iTunes listing include explicit songs?

Thank you, it is the one that I am using.

NCOE was #94 this morning for me (UK time), so around 2 am East coast time.

NCOE is now #97 on the same feed, so I would be very suprised if it had jumped to #75  an hour ago or so.

What do you mean? Why should I care what some random woman from Z100 thinks about Adam’s album? The reality is that Z100 and other pop stations are playing One Direction like crazy while we are collectively holding our breath waiting if Idols on the same format get some radio play.

I personally enjoy listening to Adam’s album, but I have to say, if NCOE doesn’t become a hit, nothing else from that album will. It’s not that the album is bad, it’s just that NCOE has the most mainstream appeal.

I stand by my opinion that 19/Sony/Interscope aren’t doing a great job A&R-ing American Idol alumni (aside from Kelly/Carrie/Fantasia/JHud/Daughtry, but they are on another level).

  • Anonymous

I think it is a very sad commentary on American mainstream taste that an album which in MHO is far below mediocre is so successful on our charts.  The artistic quality of Trespassing leaves UAN in the dust.  I really believe that Trespassing will do very well, and will have several successful singles.  It is such a good album and people will realize this in the end.

  • Valentin432

This is not about Idol vs X Factor.
WMYB is the second big hit/ smash single from a X Factor alumni after 8 seasons of that show, Idol has had many more and Call Me Maybee is looking like a bigger smash than WMYB at least in the US.

And from what I can see, Mélanie Amaro has been completely ignored (what the hell happened with that 4M prize?), and despite what people dimmed like great promotions/songs, Marcus Canty single is doing very little and Chris Rene Young Homie is a moderate hit.

  • Valentin432

The problem with that theory is that UAN is doing well everywhere, not just in the US.

Artistic quality and commercial success have never had much in common, not in music, books or films.

  • http://twitter.com/capsuleneo Neo

Has JHud ever had a million-selling single in the US?

  • Mateja Praznik

No, but artists like her don’t sell a lot of singles. Fantasia isn’t selling singles either.

  • Anonymous

I know that 1d is doing well everywhere, but it seems rude to bash a group I am not a part of.
Of course, you are absolutely right about artistry not equaling commercial success, but for some inexplicable reason, I think it well in Trespassing case.

  • Anonymous

I think that there is a big difference between what makes good album tracks  and good singles. Good album tracks have more depth, imo,  and are artistically more satisfying, but singles must have an immediate hook, and convey the right mood that make them fit in radio playlists.

Singles are the shop front window, they are more glossy than the rest of the shop, but without them, customers don’t come in.

Very solid updates on the HAC chart for all of the Idols this morning (and for 1D, The Wanted & Carly Rae as well).

Kris’ single was the sure shot of the week on the Rick Dees HAC countdown — they did an interview with him and played both TVOL and LLWD. So TVOL got a spin from several new stations yesterday and/or today.

Here are how Haley’s, Kris’ & Adam’s singles look update wise this morning compared to last week’s published chart:

    Haley:

    RanK:  33 (+1)
    Spins: 432 (+44)
    Bullet: 44 (+30)
    AI:     1.135 (+0.243)

    Kris:

    Rank:  35 (+3)
    Spins: 348 (+41)
    Bullet: 41 (+31)
    AI:      1.035 (+0.207)

    Adam:

    Rank:  44 (-1)
    Spins: 236 (+38)
    Bullet: 38 (+14)
    AI:     1.587 (+0.263)

Adam is smart and knows his Pop music very well.  He wanted to make an album that would be a commercial success, and so of course he put on pop friendly tracks: Cuckoo, Trespassing, Pop that Lock, Kickin’ In all seem like good hooky singles IMO.  I trust Adam to know what he is doing musically since he lives and breathes it.

Call me maybe got its start from Bieber and girlfriend tweeting about it and promoting it to their followers. I guess you’ve not watched her first US tv show I.e. And everyone knows the selling power of anything Bieber even though he to a little extent also has a problem with the US radio pds

Yours was an opinion and I have a contrary opinion with an industry proof to support. I would take her opinion over any other poster that sees through the fan googles. Mind you, the songs and album has been receiving universal acclaimes from almost all proven music critics.
And the person’s whose tweet I posted works at Z100 making his opinion more knowledgeable.
Lastly, thinking NCOE is the most friendly single on the album is another lone opinion shared by you as many most of the critics and other music blogs including posters here have questioned its choice as a single and has been rated among the worse sonfs

It’s not just Adam’s decision. I firmly believe that the idea of using a Bruno Mars reject as a single is a typical RCA tick box A&Ring.

Anyway, if the single picks were Adam’s decision,  BTIKM would cast doubt on the infallibility of his judgement.

  • Anonymous

Generally speaking, I think it is just pathetic the US radio PDs are jumping on the bandwagon of UK XFactor contestants and letting the alums here sweat for a radio hit. The UK PDs discriminate against singers from the US with a singing show background and use all their airtime instead to promote theirs, hence helping them to get that break.

I always wonder, shouldn’t charity begin at home? I am sure their getting a hit on their soil helped them with that international attention. First 1 Direction and now that Cher Llory or whatever.

  • http://profile.yahoo.com/PVEFG2TOUIXSROKUSO2O2DOWWE Taylor

NCOE wasn’t a regect. It was written too late to make it on his last album. Since Brono Mars is currently taking a break and has no idea what direction his next album will take, why not shop his songs around for artists that he thinks can sell one of his songs?
Bruno is a songwriter- this is what they do.

  • Anonymous

DJs tweet all the time that they love so and so, their single, their album or else, anbut they may never play their music because they are not the ones who make the decisions, it’s up to the PDs. And in addition, their gushing over any artist is lot of the time just PR fluff. They just pretend in order to keep the artists sweet, and pocket whatever they have to offer (legal of course), but it has nothing to do with their intention of playing their music.

  • Anonymous

Actually, Bruno said in an interview that NCOE was never meant to go on his last album at all and that he writes many songs that he knows will never make his own tracklisting b/c that’s what he does. He demoed it b/c, like you said, he was trying to find someone it would do well with since he is a songwriter first.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_MV64BS4FSISCASL4P656RXAFYQ Kayla

I firmly believe that the idea of using a Bruno Mars reject as a single is a typical RCA tick box A&Ring.

Calling NCOE a Bruno reject is inaccurate. Bruno was primarily a songwriter shopping his tunes to other people before he got his big shot, and this one one of those songs. In what world would it have fit on Doo Wops and Hooligans? LOL.

  • Mike M

Look’s like Scotty’s WTT fell out of the Mediabase Top 50. Not a big surprise since several songs were lined up to pass this week. With a couple of recurrents, though, it could re-enter Top 50 on this afternoon’s published chart, depending on how far it has actually fallen. I think it could re-enter at 49. Kelly’s MKIA has been languishing in the low 30s for a while. Could reach 30 with recurrents this afternoon.

  • Anonymous

Can you post any of those tweets please? Anyone can say anything, but supporting it with proves makes it more interesting.
And I did not just mention djs anywhere, I brought up in addition to that its universal rave reviews.

  • http://profile.yahoo.com/PVEFG2TOUIXSROKUSO2O2DOWWE Taylor

NCOE has not been rated as one of the worst songs on the album. As of a few days ago, there were 13 reviews (out of many) that mentioned NCOE specifically. Three of the 13 stated the opinion that there were better single choices than NCOE. The other 10 reviews had positive things to say about NCOE and its choice of being a single. There are just as many reviews that don’t give an opinion either way about single choices.

3 reviews out of 20-30 is not a majority.

  • Anonymous

Well, this is the official story.
Anyway, it might have made the album if it had been possible, but I won’t be convinced that Bruno Mars would have ever chosen it to be a single. It is just not on par with his own. At best, it would have been a deep album track.

Chris Rene has a new single that was premiered a couple of days ago. I’d say “YOUNG HOMIE” is doing great on itunes with that AI that it has. You just can’t have a hit if Z100 does not jump on board. It just won’t happen. But I’m glad they released that song because it has really brought in lots of new fans.
The new single is really good and I see Z100 playing it. It fits right into their playlist. I hope EPIC does their homework well and get them on board from the get go.

That’s the only song he didn’t write on his upcoming album but it seems he tweaked it and changed a couple of words besides adding his usual moans and swagga to it. It seems to have been co-written by Mikke Busbee and Alex Lambert for his album that didn’t happen in 2010. It fits Chris like a glove lol! I’m glad LA Reid got it for him!

It’s in this show archive but you have to leave it on for many hrs to get to the song because it’s a whole 3-day show combined.

Carrie’s Good Girl finally showing some momentum after being pretty flat for a few weeks. Eric Church actually leads her in AI by almost a million on Mediabase but the point system has Carrie comfortably ahead. If that AI situation carries over to Billboard, Eric would pass her, though I’m not sure what the Billboard AI numbers are. I suspect Carrie leads AI there. Most people that I talk to/read seem to feel it is crucial for Carrie to hold off Eric if she is to have a chance at number 1.

In the current line-up-and-take-your-turn country chart environment, Kip Moore just took over number 1. Zac Brown Band gets the next turn then it would probably be Carrie assuming she can hold off Eric’s “Springsteen.”

  • Anonymous

Well Adam alluded to something like this that a lot goes into picking radio singles since radio is not about how good a song is or how much fans request it, but you have to check the politics angle also.
I am personally not surprised the polled radio pds chose a Bruno’s song even it is glaringly one of the weakest on the album. The PDs have shown they are in love with Bruno for whatever reason even thou I personally think he is very overrated. Of course they give him the smashing spins and he continues to sell.
Radio has so much power in sharpening someone’s career. You are always guaranteed the spins and therefore sales if you happen to be someone they love otherwise it is an uphill climb. See – Bieber even with all his sales and consistency on iTunes even with this new single has always struggled with radio spins. Yet they are all over those British boys with a similar demo, less popular and less sale records than him. That there is one of the revelations of radio game.

  • http://profile.yahoo.com/PVEFG2TOUIXSROKUSO2O2DOWWE Taylor

It’s the real story, these are the facts behind NCOE long before it was even considered by Adam and we won’t ever know if it would have been a single or not. It very well could have been if it had been written and completed at the right time and been a fit for the album. NCOE is on par with the rest of the songs Bruno has written for himself and for other artists.

  • Anonymous

It was an answer to your post about the person from Z100 tweet. As far as I am concerned, it is nice that she likes Trespassing, and that she plays it in her car, but I won’t read anything more into it that this, and certainly not that Z100 are ready to play NCOE.  They may, they may not.

Not on par with his singles,  in my opinion, far from it. Sorry, but this is not Just the Way You Are or Grenade. Just not.

A dj tweeting doesn’t matter, they don’t pick the playlist.

After watching the stream yesterday, NCOE and Naked Love are the two most radio friendly singles he’s been performing.  Critics rating songs as just cuts vs RADIO friendly songs are two different things.

  • Anonymous

Radio PDs don’t care that Bruno Mars wrote NCOE. It’s a talking point in interviews for Adam, nothing more. It’s similar to all the songs written by Ryan Tedder that artists cut — radio PDs don’t care if Tedder wrote it — they want to know if the song fits into their playlist and whether the song will generate listener interest.

Now if Bruno was actually singing on the track? That would probably make a difference in terms of how quickly radio stations might start putting NCOE in heavy rotation (or even start playing it at all). But Bruno isn’t on it.

  • Anonymous

If someone who works at Z100 tweeted that she loves Trespassing, then it must be the most brilliant album ever made.  I am willing to stipulate to that right now and admit Adam is the greatest artist to ever have lived.  I succumb.

Meanwhile, a lot of the Idol singles on HAC seem like they are gaining some traction. The chart is due for fresh songs so maybe the stations are rotating their playlists and we’ll start to see momentum pick up for these singles.  That would be nice.

Mike M, it will be interesting to see what happens at the top of Country over the next couple of weeks. I agree, it’s so predictable and annoying how every song takes its turn at #1 for a week or two.  I don’t see the same the of collusion, I mean, coincidence, on other charts.

  • Anonymous

This is also your opinion. For the fact that certain songs translate better life does not make them better songs. If we are going by what some of the reviewers have been saying, Coukou, NL, and even Kickin in have been highlighted as the radio smashes. I am personally yet to see someone that picked NCOE.
Secondly I know djs don’t pick singles, but they re radio personalities who work in the industry. It is just like writing Adam’ s take on radio away because he is neither a pd nor a radio corporate. Every worker who is not trolling should have a certain familiarity with his profession.

Mike M: Carrie’s Good Girl finally showing some momentum after being pretty flat for a few weeks. Most people that I talk to/read seem to feel it is crucial for Carrie to hold off Eric if she is to have a chance at number 1.

Going into this week Good Girl had about an 850k AI lead on Springsteen at Billboard though Springsteen was leading by over 500k AIs at Mediabase. Springsteen’s probably closed in more this week so it’ll probably be close at Billboard, especially with 1 day left to go on the Billboard chart. Springsteen’s the one that’s been getting the label push this week (there was a BCU ad) and I don’t really see how GG will keep holding it off unless the label gets involved or country radio really wants to let Carrie have her turn. Historically with Carrie the label hasn’t gotten involved until the last minute when she’s in position to get a #1.

To be honest I think GG’s momentum is that radio finally decided to let it have its turn. It’s still the youngest song in the t10 at 12 weeks on the chart soon to be 13 (Luke Bryan’s next with 14 weeks on the chart soon to be 15). And, it wouldn’t surprise me if another issue was country radio only wanting 1 female song in the t5 at a time, meaning they had to cycle Miranda’s Over You out before they let Carrie’s GG in.

Mike M: Zac Brown Band gets the next turn then it would probably be Carrie assuming she can hold off Eric’s “Springsteen.”

Probably but it depends on whether Kip Moore gets 1 week or 2 at #1. With the huge gains he had this week I think it’ll probably be just 1 week but you never know.

leilamaurizia: 3rd week on the countdown with a 39-38-35 run so far.

Oh, thanks! So this morning’s HAC spin gain wasn’t a countdown gain.
It’s still pretty late for Rick Dees to pick up Good Girl but at least
he got around to eventually. I don’t really follow the countdown but I
know I’ve read discussions with other songs where people have wondered
why he’s been so late or early to pick up certain songs.

Speaking of countdowns but shifting to more familiar territory for me,
there will be 2 recurrents in the t20 (Rascal Flatts and Lady A) which
will allow Kelly’s MKIA to hit the t30 and get countdown spins. Kenny
Chesney’s new single passed MKIA today and it’ll debut ahead of MKIA on
    Billboard too.

Mike M: Look’s like Scotty’s WTT fell out of the Mediabase Top 50. Not a big
surprise since several songs were lined up to pass this week. With a
couple of recurrents, though, it could re-enter Top 50 on this
afternoon’s published chart, depending on how far it has actually
fallen. I think it could re-enter at 49. Kelly’s MKIA has been
languishing in the low 30s for a while. Could reach 30 with recurrents
    this afternoon.

Yes, 2 recurrents at Mediabase and probably 1 at Billboard so I expect to see WTT back this afternoon. It’s going to be a rough chart week for Scotty & Kellie with Kenny, Lady A, Lee Brice, and possibly Jake Owen passing at Billboard but they just need to keep scraping up whatever gains they can and ride out the storm.

MKIA had a bad week last week but is back to gaining this week. It’ll likely hold at #29 Billboard and then pick up the Mediabase countdown spins over the next couple weeks. MKIA got lucky at MB that Hunter Hayes had a bad week which allowed MKIA to repass Wanted.

The Rick Dees HAC countdown is super lame.  So far this weekend, it’s only accounted for three monitored US spins & a few in Canada.  There will be more as the day goes on but that is even down from 2-3 years ago when LLWD & TT were on his show.  So yeah, not a major impact at all.

  • Anonymous

I am not reading anything to it either. I brought it up to say there is nothing wrong with the radio tracks on the album contrary to how someone has been saying the PDs play UK XFactor because they have the best songs and best writing team. That was why my original post was directed at Mateja.

And that is just one of such tweets. A few of them have also been raving on Pop The Lock and some other songs.

  • mchcat

Hope Scotty gets a video soon – my radio station has a free for all phone line where folks can call in in any subject and rant.  At least twice there have been phone callers (both men) who said quit playing the Kelly song – it “sucks” and a worse word.  I actually haven’t heard it yet.

  • Anonymous

It is possible we have been reading different reviews. Aside from the Electroqueer one, I am yet to see any other reviewer that picked it as a favourite. I am rather familiar with people asking why the two weakest songs on the album were picked as singles.

  • Valentin432

You must be new around here, Call Me Maybee was a huge hit in Canada way before she signed with Interscope
And for that matter, Bieber own single isn’t doing as well and some of his other promoted singles aren’t even close to be hits in the US.

Carly Rae was a Canadian Idol contestant, she finished 3rd in season 5.

If US X Factor and American Idol contestants released songs as catchy as Call Me Maybe and What Makes You Beautiful they would have similar success on pop.

Oh wow, thanks for the info. I don’t really know whether to read anything into how GG’s doing so far at HAC because I’m not as familiar with how the chart operates. All I’ve got is GG’s not smashing like Carly Rae Jepsen’s hit at HAC but it’s doing a’ightish.

Just so I’m up to date here, the big Z100 tweet about loving Adam’s album is this one by Danielle Monaro right? Or was there another one? Because Danielle Monaro is their morning gossip reporter, she’s not a DJ, never mind a PD or MD.

Here’s a question from somebody who doesn’t really pay attention to the pop charts. Do people think it would’ve been smarter for RCA to try to get a dance hit 1st off Trespassing and then cross it over to CHR? Does that happen much anymore? I know RCA said Adult Top 40/HAC was Adam’s strongest format in that Billboard article but it seems like the songs people are talking about the most are the dancier ones, not the HAC targeted ones.

mchcat: Hope Scotty gets a video soon

That would probably help with downloads and maybe airplay down the line. It’s a little bit of a tough time in that part of the chart because a lot of big name singles are coming through. It’s going to have to be slow & steady for WTT.

If you look at today’s Mediabase country chart closely you’ll see the following: Two solo female artists in the Top 20; three in the Top 30; four in the Top 40; five in the Top 50.

Maybe it’s pure coincidence. It doesn’t always line up that way, though the overall 1 in 10 ratio is about right. The two in the Top 20 are Carrie and Miranda (who is dropping after a first-place run). Maybe it’s pure coincidence, too, that Carrie’s song starting picking up when Miranda’s started it’s downward trend. All I know is Jethro Gibbs from NCIS says there’s no such thing as coincidence, and who would argue with Gibbs?

But critics aren’t radio is my point. Music Bloggers aren’t radio. Give me a list of radio pds who they said they wanted Cuckoo or Kickin In and they would have played it but won’t play NCOE. We don’t know what kind of vetting RCA did before it’s decision, we aren’t privy. I love Kickin In but no way it was going to be a second single, too risky. I’m doubtful on Cuckoo a little bit.

The problem lies when you get backed into a corner with a failed first single. I’m not even sure NCOE was in the running for the album until the rumblings of Bruno/Adam collab rumors started flying, because the rumors started as that.  Seems like it was recorded and finished after it got interest. We all know there are politics that go into singles choices more than any reviews could ever influence. I’m not convinced NCOE and BTIKM weren’t both picked because of Dr. Luke, that and Bruno’s name. You pay for a Bruno song, there are going to be contracts attached.  (Well I’m not sure why BTIKM was ever picked, but I digress.)  But that doesn’t mean NCOE isn’t a great song on the radio, my station is playing it and it sounds great in my car.  Adam sings the hell out of it live.  RCA likely got some input before these radio concerts and agreement for some spins.  KTU is on their third spin today, a few new stations are spinning this weekend.

Cuckoo or Naked Love will be next if I had to pick now.  If he gets a third single.

  • Anonymous

NCOE is on par with the rest of the songs Bruno has written for himself and for other artists.

So, are you saying it’s the singing that made those other songs hit off the bat, while this one isn’t doing as well?  J/K

Bruno has written some good songs, and some that aren’t so good.  Just like every other writer.  All of his songs aren’t all on the same level.  Nor do they all sound the same.  Considering that he has written songs specifically for other people, but this one wasn’t written specifically for Adam, it would be understandable if the song isn’t a perfect fit, or if it doesn’t have the same meaning that Bruno intended it to have.

girlygirltoo said: Radio PDs don’t care that Bruno Mars wrote NCOE. It’s a talking point in interviews for Adam, nothing more. It’s similar to all the songs written by Ryan Tedder that artists cut — radio PDs don’t care if Tedder wrote it — they want to know if the song fits into their playlist and whether the song will generate listener interest.

I agree that they won’t play a song just because Bruno wrote it. They would play it, if Bruno Mars was featured on the song. But, I do think that one of the reasons why some PDs liked it is because of the Bruno connection. And honestly, it’s a good bet that one of the main reasons why RCA picked the song as the second single is because Bruno Mars wrote it, and Dr. Luke produced it.

True, but lame or not,  a few extra soins extra spins are still a good thing, especially since none of those stations are spinning the song on their own yet.

I don’t know what criteria the Ryan Seacrest/American Top 40/HAC weekly countdown shows use, but I would think that Haley’s and Kris’ singles should be showing up on that HAC Weekly Countdown show pretty soon, shouldn’t they? Which would mean another boost in weekend spins.

Here’s Chris Rene performing the new single at the MALL OF AMERICA right after it was premiered on radio. Just a snippet. The full song sounds awesome! The drum beats and the studio swagga is amazing and he cracks up in the studio version like he did in this video, lol!
I hope all the frigging 30 stations he toured who never touched YH would play this song!

It’s good that you’ve seen the error of your ways after this obviously serious input that everyone claimed was the be all end all of endorsements. It’s always best to admit these things. Good for the soul.

I’m glad singles seem to be getting some traction and I totally agree that the playlists need to new fresh songs. I personally cannot wait for next week to see how everything unfolds for all the Idols releasing and or moving on radio charts.

I think so Windmills.  I wouldn’t have led with HAC personally.. IMO.  Let HAC follow CHR.

Depending on how you look at it, the problem or benefit is that Adam’s strongest format is Hot AC.  That format continues to give WWFM a strong amount of spins, and it’s where his songs have seen longevity, and done their best, so why not take advantage of that.  Or, if you see CHR as not being as open or ready to play his music, why not start with the format where Adam is more established, and put Adam’s songs in a position where they will be heard, so hopefully if the songs do well that will influence what CHR program directors do.

The only downside to this plan is that it doesn’t work if Hot AC PDs relegate the songs to mainly overnight spins, like they did with BTIKM, or if they are slow to spin or add a song, like they’ve pretty much done with NCOE.

  • LaurelG

Positive comments like the one tweeted by the Z100 reporter are always great to hear. Especially with the album just out this week. I’m sure the fans of just about any Idol performer with an album to promote would duly note it and squee a bit.

  • http://profile.yahoo.com/PVEFG2TOUIXSROKUSO2O2DOWWE Taylor

No, what I’m saying is NCOE is on par with the rest of the songs Bruno has written.

Most songs by established songwriters aren’t written specifically for a certain person, unless it is a co-writing situation in which the artist is involved and contributing equally to the song. Songs are written and then shopped around to labels and artists. It’s the job of Adam and his team to figure out which songs match his voice and vision for the album.

This type of situation can lead to a perfect fit, take WWFM and LLWD for example. Songs do not have to be written with a certain artist in mind. It’s up to the artist and their team to find the right songs and then to the artist to make those songs their own.

I think NCOE is better than The Lazy Song, and that was a huge hit.

The funny thing about The Lazy Song is that at first Bruno’s label wasn’t doing a lot to promote it to radio, or promote it at all.  At the time he was on the first leg of his world tour, and I think that they thought that the song wasn’t going to go anywhere.  But, at the start its sales outpaced its airplay by a lot, so PDs couldn’t ignore that.  So, it wasn’t Bruno’s previous success that got that song airplay.

Girlygirltoo said: I don’t know what criteria the Ryan Seacrest/American Top 40/HAC weekly countdown shows use

AT 40 uses the mediabase chart plus recurrents.  Given how big recurrents are on Hot AC, it’s going to be a while before Kris and Haley appear on that countdown.

I have seen 10 out of 13 that mentioned NCOE specifically, praise it as a song and a single. I guess you could look up all the reviews, but there have been a ton of them when you count in other countries and blog sites.
There have been some reviews in the past few days that I’ve not included in this total, so there may have been a couple more that mentioned NCOE that aren’t included in this total.

Yes, I understand what you are saying, and agree that it is up to an artist to make a song their own, but that the song still needs to be one that is close to their style.

My only issue is with the claim that all of Bruno’s songs are on the same level, because I don’t think that they are.  He’s an amazing songwriter.  I think that he’s very smart, and that he understands the current musical climate, but I don’t think that every song that he’s ever written has worked, or that they are all just as good as one another.  Even the ones that are good, It Will Rain, aren’t as good as the ones that are great, Grenade.

I think RCA was too focused on trying to ease into the dance tracks b/c Adam was known most from WWFM that they kind of kicked themselves in the ass a bit. Part of the issue also was that not all of the tracks were finished at that time, including songs like Cuckoo, and RCA wanted a song out to counter the BFM release (this did get sent to radio apparently and there are still stations who don’t know it wasn’t an official, if not RCA, release).

Personally, I’d have preferred for them to have gone with a dance track, but I’m not privy to which ones were fully done. He worked on Shady last year, but the final mix (per Nile Rogers) wasn’t finalized until a month or two before album release. NCOE and Pop That Lock were both had the final vocal tracks and production work really late as well. So, ultimately it’s all just a guessing game to that end. BTIKM was likely just what they had finished, sounded the most like WWFM, and had big names for writer and producer.

If someone who works at Z100 tweeted that she loves Trespassing, then it must be the most brilliant album ever made. I am willing to stipulate to that right now and admit Adam is the greatest artist to ever have lived. I succumb.

A lot of industry people seem to love it, don’t they. Not very common for Idol folk. I like Rolling Stone’s appreciaction the most, though.

  • http://profile.yahoo.com/PVEFG2TOUIXSROKUSO2O2DOWWE Taylor

You quoted someone other than me.

No one said that every song by any writer is an identical song in every way imaginable. My comment was that I feel that NCOE is on par with Bruno’s other songs. We are going to just have to agree to disagree on this because we are now going in circles with this discussion.

  • Anonymous

I see it as not forward thinking. But hey, it’s RCA, they are old school and not very creative.  If you want success on the CHR format, lead with a CHR single and hit it hard. Radio tour first with them. Regardless of prior success on HAC and he did have success on CHR in the past. It’s not like HAC couldn’t have followed or even been targeted at the same time. But by picking a lead song that doesn’t even fit CHR, you are guaranteeing no CHR spins.   For marketing the album as dance electropop, starting with HAC seemed the wrong way to go.  But I’m much more ballsy than RCA is ;)  They walk on eggshells with him and radio.  It get it, but it wouldn’t have been my game plan.  At least not for the lead single.

  • Anonymous

Good or not, it came after two huge singles, that gave it momentum, whereas NCOE is coming after BTIKM, and needs to be the momentum builder.

But nevermind, this is just my opinion, and it won’t make things happen. We’ll know soon enough one way or the other, and I would be very happy to be wrong about NCOE potential as a single.

  • http://twitter.com/LindsayKempFan Not fit to print

True, and I’m beginning to think RCA did it’s job thoroughly because yesterday NCOE accidently looped on my iPod and I ended up listening to it on repeat for a full 30 mintes before I changed back to shuffle. It was by no means my favourite but now I love it.

Radio told RCA wich single it wanted and RCA delivered. It’s not about reviewers or fans (who can’t agree anyway LOL) It’s about casual listeners picking up on something catchy.

    Time will tell.

I agree. RS to me is the most validating review of all. And according to Metacritic, they score 8 points lower than other publications. I still can’t get over that RS gave his album a higher score than powerhouses like Adele and Carrie. And currently his Metacritic score on the album is higher than both, although it is subject to change once he gets more reviews in.

Bruno Mars is pretty over-rated. He’s alright but nothing special. And he has yet to write a song that will have an impact beyond the first 16 weeks of its release.

He’s very much driving the Katy Perry wave of popularity of writing songs that get overplayed for 12 weeks, than disappear within a year. They are all interchangeable, none of them are lyrically of musically exciting or innovative and they just do their job, die quickly and nobody remembers them.

I hear Eminem’s 10 or 12 year old songs more than i hear Just the way you are or Grenade or Nothing on you and what are they? 2 years old?

The same will happen to it will rain and whatever hit he has had that i already forgot existed.

So yeah he’s very popular right now but his music has exactly zero lasting impact (even on the teen girls who want to marry him) so to paint him as some otherworldly talent is just hilarious and it only shows how low is the bar among idol stans and how mediocre the idol versions of pop guitar guys they stan truly are.

There is no proof Bruno considers NCOE as album filler. It was given to Adam as a potential single for Trespassing. Adam also has songs that didn’t make his album that are being shopped around to other artists because they do not fit his albums theme. I bet they are good songs, not rejects.

  • Anonymous

The Z100 DJ tweeting about Trespassing doesn’t make anything a certainty, but it’s nice and it seems like a hopeful sign, along with everything else, that they’ll add ncoe at some point.  I really liked Grenade and didn’t like some other Bruno Mars singles–I like NCOE a lot, not that this means anything.  But it seems like a lot of ppl like it and there are signs that radio will be on board, which might mean something. So hopefully that’s all true. :-)

And it is nice that industry ppl seem all over the album, and that it’s getting such FANTASTIC reviews from respected music reviewers. :3

I may be nuts but hearing Stefano’s single blaring from the radio makes me think it has real CHR potential. I think it goes for adds this week and I’m not sure how much play it’s getting.

It’s such a silly song but it could be a sleeper summer hit. Has anyone else but me heard it on the radio?

  • Anonymous

I agree with you, I think it sounds like a CHR hit also.  I think it is a pretty silly song, but it is cheerful, catchy and has the right vibe.  In addition, Stefano is cute, and I can see girls getting into him.  He is a much better singer than many on that format and can sing live.  I think he has the possibility of being pretty successful.  Who would have thought this months ago?

  • Anonymous

I love Bruno Mars, I love his voice and I do think he’s special. I love great distinctive voices and when I hear a Bruno song (and an Adam song) I immediately know who’s singing. Definitely not overrated in my book.

  • Anonymous

i really like listening to Bruno Mars, he’s my second favourite male singer after Adam. Never listen to Eminem….Is he overrated…maybe, but no more than many other singers nowadays.

  • Anonymous

To date, Stefano’s song is not getting much radio play, except on Sirius Satellite Radio and on one CHR/rhythmic station. I posted his spins from last week in last Monday’s sales thread, but I’ll re-post them here:

Top 40 monitored spins – 64 total spins

    55 – Sirius Radio “20 on 20″ channel
2 –   KUDD (Salt Lake City)
    1 –   KMXV (Kansas City)
    1 –   KRQQ (Tucson)
1 –   KSME (Ft. Collins, CO)
    1 –   KTFM (San Antonio)
    1 –   KZZP (Phoenix)
    1 –   WIXX (Appleton, WI)
    1 –   WKSZ (Appleton, WI)

    CHR/Rhythmic monitored spins – 23 total spins

    22 – KSEQ (Fresno)
    1 –   KGGI (Riverside, CA)

HAC monitored spins – 1 total spin

    1 –   WWMX (Baltimore)

I am looking at his page on yes.com right now and I see 3 new CHR stations spinning him today — WBBO (Ocean, NJ), KKSW (my old college stomping grounds – Lawrence, KS)  and WSPK (Poughkeepsie, NY). However, only one of three 3 startions (WSPK) is a mediabase monitored station.

So unless his label has some magic up its sleeve, I would expect this song to move pretty slowly on CHR and rhythmic stations. If he ends up getting a bunch of adds, that could change very quickly, of course…

I still can’t get over that RS gave his album a higher score than powerhouses like Adele and Carrie. And currently his Metacritic score on the album is higher than both, although it is subject to change once he gets more reviews in.

I could get over this really quickly, since the sales numbers for these two ladies speak a whole lot louder than a Metacritic or Rolling Stone score.  Reviews just don’t carry a lot of weight with me, since I love some albums and movies that have gotten panned, but they entertained me, so that’s all that matters.

  • Anonymous

I’ll bet it would matter to any musician, though, particularly one trying to prove himself as an artist and not just a karaoke singer.  The point, I think, is that no matter how the album sells, he’s being taken much more seriously than he was just off of Idol.  Of course he wants mega sales, but I’m sure being recognized in the industry for being friggin’ good must feel pretty great.

  • Anonymous

And he has yet to write a song that will have an impact beyond the first 16 weeks of its release.

Bruno Mar’s is in the record books for having his debut song remain at number one on the AC charts for 20 weeks in a row.  From Billboard Biz in September of 2011.

Mars has landed in the Billboard record book as the artist to spend the most time atop the Adult Contemporary chart with a debut format chart entry, when “Just the Way You Are” spent a whopping 20 weeks at No. 1. He’s also the first male artist since Richard Marx to send his first six singles into the Billboard Hot 100′s top 10. Three of those reached No. 1: “Nothin’ on You” (on which Mars assisted B.o.B) and his own “Way” and follow-up “Grenade.” Mars’ debut full-length album, “Doo-Wops & Hooligans,” bowed at No. 3 on the Billboard 200 the week of Oct. 23, 2010, and has logged 47 weeks on the chart – all in the top 50. The set has sold 1.2 million copies, according to Nielsen SoundScan.

BTW, Just The Way You Are set this record on the AC chart after it hit number one on the pop and hot ac charts. So, the song was a presence for more than 16 weeks.

  • http://twitter.com/weeeeezle weezle

Yeah, it would probably mean more to you if it was one of your favorites. means alot to us Adam fans…to each his own…

Stefano’s song saw a pretty big jump on Mediabase  over just to days last week, but it also saw a big drop in its AI.  The increased spins must have come from the satellite channel.

  • Anonymous

Perfectly happy that RS gave a higher score to Adam.  IMO he’s a superior singer, entertainer, and performer – deserves that and a lot more.

  • Anonymous

So, would that mean that Carrie and Adele aren’t being taken seriously, because their scores are lower?

I want to ask some actual artists about this, because I bet if you asked artists who worked for months writing the lyrics and music for an album what means more to them, the opinions of critics, or the opinions of the audience who their album is geared towards, I’d bet they’d say the audience.  When it comes to being seen as serious artists, I think that they would listen to the opinions of other writers, artists and musicians, before they would listen to someone who writes for Entertainment Weekly or the LA Times.

And here I thought Kris’ B+ review from EW meant something and I thought you did too because you mentioned it in his album thread, but I guess since it’s likely he won’t sell nearly as much as Adele or Carrie I better get over that. I happen to think positive reviews for both Adam and Kris do mean something to their fans and the artists because it supports the idea that they’ve put out good music even if they don’t sell a shitload of records. Just because radio isn’t jumping up and down to play Adam and Kris, doesn’t mean that they aren’t talented people putting out way better music than many top 40 radio artists. Critical acclaim may be even more important to artists like Kris and Adam than people like Carrie and Adele because they aren’t superstars who will sell no matter what critics say. A positive review in a major publication may encourage casual readers to check out Kris and Adam’s stuff, when they otherwise wouldn’t. I would think if a record label is debating wether to renew contracts they would be more likely to renew an artist who had an album that sold moderately, but was critically acclaimed, than one that sold moderately and was panned.

All his songs sent out to radio or given to other artists are on the same level and I believe that is what the OP means or can you name a song of his sang by him or given to another artist that has flopped? This should be fun since I follow the charts and I am unaware of any.

Adele and Carrie are great artists who have a great amount of respect in the industry. Both have also received some very good reviews for their latest albums. No, reviews aren’t the be all and end all of everything, but positive reviews from reputable music critics and magazines are always a very nice bonus. Not only do they acknowledge the artist for their excellent work, they also are a small part of the big picture as far as buzz goes.

Great reviews may not help a huge amount with total sales numbers, but they certainly don’t hurt!

How does someone making Pop/Dance music is best suited to HAC?
I read on the CHR board under Bieber thread that CHR age range is 18-34? Do you have any other age range and it’s break downs for all of the formats.
I am asking this in all honesty as you appear to have those demo figures.

Let’s cross our collective fingers that they all find enough success on that coveted format to continue with the level of career they want.  I think all three CHR hopefuls who released or will release this month have put out an excellent album on which they have worked very hard.  Each one embodies very well who they are as artists, and I for one will not be gleeful if anyone of them falls short of their goals.

You never posted here before (or at least under this profile) so I assumed you were new, no big deal.

You introduced me to nothing, I followed her carreer way before any CMM hit and I say again, her song was a hit way before Justin Bieber did anything. The Ellen Degeneres show apparition was way after her song was a big hit and in the top 10 of itunes USA.

Again if a celebrity endorsement was all that it take to have a hit single, a lot of idols would have one which just isn’t the case.
In JB particular case, he is featured on a Far East Movement single that isn’t even in the top 400 of itunes.

  • http://profile.yahoo.com/PVEFG2TOUIXSROKUSO2O2DOWWE Taylor

That’s not true. I’m a fan of Kris’, but I can’t agree with Jim Cantiello about Teach Me How Love Goes being a good song. I didn’t agree with Rodney Ho about “Red Guitar” being the best song on the first album. I have the ability to form my own opinion, so it’s going to be impossible (and stupid) for me to change my opinion on Carrie Underwood’s album, because someone at Rolling Stone doesn’t like it.

The comment you quoted suggested that a great review from somewhere like RS might mean a lot to you as a fan, not that you had to agree with every word the reviewer said or that their favorite songs had to be your favorite songs.

The original comment certainly didn’t suggest that you should change your opinion of an album that you already liked, just that you might appreciate a great review as a fan. It seems to go without saying that fans would be happy for their favorite artists to get good reviews, especially from respected music publications.

Positive reviews are better than bad reviews. No one says it will make an album a success or failure. What it can do is gain interest and potential sales increases. Critical acclaim can possilly help get artists nominated to future awards shows.

Well, Kris did not get another single and his album had poor sales. Adam has a new single out, NCOE, which goes for addS on the 28th, 29th, and we will be able to judge success or failure in a couple of months.

Artist’s song must also get her a tv spot the same day?
And any Idol that gets his single tweeted by a celebrity with Bieber’s kind of following would also enjoy those initial sales.
Far East Movement got their initial sales riding on the coat ails of Bieber, but unfortunately for them radio was not biting and it seems you ve deliberately left out the radio politics/game from my previous post in order to prove your point?
Ultimately radio has to also support for you to continue to sell and that all depends on if the PDs like you enough to put your songs on rotation. See even Bieber that is clearly more influential, sells better and way more popular struggles on mainstream radio.

For an artist trying to break out and become a big seller, a positive review is very important. If someone is on the fence about buying an album wouldn’t it be better to have that good review which might convince them to buy it?

  • Valentin432

CMM is a big hit, it was/is outselling by far her amount of airplay, Live My Life had one week in the top 10 then went down fast, that’s what the Bieber burst gets you. CMM is a very popular song in every single country she has released it,

Bieber despite all his success doesn’t produce hits the size of CMM, that song is already 2 times platinium in the US, Bieber only has one of those for Baby.

Say what?  No, I just alluded to the fact that Adam having received so much positive feedback from his album assuredly means something to him whether or not it means anything to you or anyone else.  Yes, sales are important, but I do think that regardless of revenue generated, it has to feel pretty good to any artist to be ranked by renowned music publications above others who are commercial mega-stars.

Here is my 2 cents on album reviews.   I think they help an artist get some credibility within the music industry, which is a nice thing when the artist is looking for people to collaborate with.    As far as album sales, a great review might get someone to check out an album, but it doesn’t mean they will buy it.   So I’m not sure if good reviews help to increase sales all that much, but they are nice to have.   It’s something for labels to point to when trying to get PDs to play their client.

I think it is great that Kris and Adam are both getting good reviews, although it doesn’t surprise me.   To me (to you) Season 8 was a great season in regards to male pop pop/rock singers.

I’m not sure why it would be funny. His label had the smarts to put out a lead single that fits the CHR format.

Eh, I’m thrilled when my favorite gets a good review from an established industry publication. With so many critics discounting people from idol as karaoke warblers and looking down at them as artists, praise can only help, not hurt. It may convince someone on the fence to give a listen, or increase opportunities within the industry for them

I could get over this really quickly, since the sales numbers for
these two ladies speak a whole lot louder than a Metacritic or Rolling
    Stone score.

so when kris sells 20k albums next week we can dismiss all the positive reviews written by idol bloggers and just assume the album is a shitfest then?

There is nothing to get over. I didn’t even mention sales in my post. The fact that he got a very good review from a very tough and reputable critic makes me happy as a fan, and it may lead to the people on the Grammy committee to give him a look. Esperanza Spalding is not a platinum selling artist, but she is a Grammy winner. The song that Fantasia won a Grammy for only sold 90K. The album that Jennifer Hudson won a Grammy for is not platinum either. Success does not have to only mean mega sales. It can be critical acclaim as rewarded by a Grammy. As others mentioned, the artists selling the most albums aren’t necessarily critically acclaimed.

Huh? Kris didn’t get another single when? He got 3 singles for his debut album — LLWD, TT and AWM (although the label basically ignored AWM in terms of promoting it)

He will almost definitely get a 2nd single off this album, as well

what All Music review? The only reviews I’ve seen so far are the EW one and Lyndsey Parker’s.

Wow.  Yeah, talk about backhanded compliments.  Sheesh.

Kris’ Allmusic review of TYC once again showed that many writers have a hard time writing about either of these guys without bringing up the other.  Some of Adam’s reviews and press did the same thing.  For heavens sake,  it been three years, get over it.  I think it is lazy journalism.  It gives them a couple of easy sentences.  The two David’s didn’t have to deal with this I believe.

sheeesh for the allmusic review for Kris. hahaha when you’re too nice you can’t make a strong impression.  He obviously doesn’t like Kris and once again compare to Adam at the same time saying that he was not helped by being paired to him. Yes wtf just keep on doing it isn’t it?
Anyway i’ll take the half star more he’s giving compare to KATA even though TYC is worthed more than that

ellegrll, i understand that you might be stressed, but I think it was clear that no one was saying that good reviews are way more important than great sales, and certainly no one was saying that Adam’s metacritic score being higher than Carrie’s and Adele’s meant that he was more critically acclaimed/successful than they were.  Carrie’s gotten a lot of acclaim, and obviously Adele is like the most critically acclaimed artist of the decade, lol.

But getting good/excellent reviews, especially so many of them, and from publications like Rolling Stone, is a great thing, especially for an artist trying to establish himself. I like plenty of movies and albums that don’t get good reviews, but it must be satisfying for Adam to have his album being so critically well-received–and that seems to go along with lots of other writers, artists, and musicians liking the album too, as has been clear for the last few days. :)

People–industry people and his fellow artists–are taking him really seriously and recognizing that he’s amazingly talented.  That’s great, and it can only help towards sales.  If he can get good sales, or even great sales, on top of that, that’s obviously awesome. :)

All very true, Pam–the RS critics being so tough made the review even more satisfying, and critical acclaim matters.  Which doesn’t denigrate sales at all–we all want Adam to sell well, lol.

In your opinion.  For me, KATA was a far superior album.

You still are deliberabetly leaving out Bieber’s radio chronicle that I have self pointed out. I am giving it one mor shot. He is very popular and has a very big fan base even though he is not popular with radio pds. It was his influence that pushed that song up iTunes and the girl caught her break when Bieber discovered and signed her. There is no re-writing that history for her, however how much a fan wants to pretend it happened otherwise.
Her song started smashing after this. Once it smashed in the US, that alone guaranteed it would perform moderately in the rest of the world since the US radio has that much influence. Fortunately her song has been smashing almost everywhere. I like the song since it is truely catchy and don’t begrudge her her success.
I think it is funny though how certain fans want to write her artistry history for her.

Let me assure you I’m not.  For example, I can have a discussion without relying on personal attacks.
