Glad that TVOL showed up in the contenders :) hope it makes the top 20 next week!

  • Anonymous

Good work Kris fans for getting the TVOL to contenders.  Upward movement is so much more difficult with the new voting system which rewards the size of a fan base much more than its passion.

Boo on the Haley and Kris updates today. I should stay out of the numbers thread. :-(

  • Anonymous

I just noticed that in the article from Billboard, one of the VPs from RCA admits that Adam’s strongest format is Adult top 40 (Hot AC).  That would explain why they released BTIKM, and why it seems like they are even depending on Hot AC to help them woo pop program directors into playing NCOE.

  • Anonymous

I don’t really get that strategy. Because if a song doesn’t zip up the HAC charts, CHR stations aren’t going to play it. Why not push the song hard to CHR, rather than depend on another format?

  • Anonymous

I think that they are pushing the song hard at both formats, which is why he’s visited both Hot AC and mainstream pop stations, and even some AC stations in an attempt to impress the corporate owners, who are the real decision makers.  The message that I took away is that they know or feel like he’s made an impact on adult pop/Hot AC, so why not use that to make inroads at pop stations?

Of course, NCOE and BTIKM haven’t exactly zipped up the Hot AC chart, so maybe they are overestimating that impact, but if the song is doing well at these Hot AC stations, then maybe that can be used to get some pop stations to play the song.

  • Anonymous

Ouch to the updates for Haley and Kris today. Not good for TVOL to have an overall negative bullet this early. Is this all due to the Dial Global removal? Any new stations spinning for either of them?

    Aren’t pop stations spinning NCOE?

As of last week, only two stations so far.

  • YankeeFan08

NCOE doesn’t officially go for CHR adds until 5/29.  However KTU has already added it and plays it.  Same for KRZ (Wilkes-Barre).  It has received spins on Q102 Philly and Kiss 108 Boston, but they have not yet added.

  • http://profile.yahoo.com/PVEFG2TOUIXSROKUSO2O2DOWWE Taylor

A few stations are and they are giving NCOE some midday spins. Adam has several CHR radio shows coming up in the next couple of weeks, plus some big promo coming for NCOE and the album release. Impact date for radio is still over two weeks away.

NCOE is doing better than BTIKM was doing at three weeks, both on the HAC and CHR formats.

  • http://profile.yahoo.com/PVEFG2TOUIXSROKUSO2O2DOWWE Taylor

I don’t know about Free, but TVOL has not had any new stations spinning it this week.

  • Penny Burke

Adam is unfortunately aging out of the Pop demographic and his fan base is perceived, right or wrong, to be much older than the CHR demo. I don’t think with those obstacles that he’s going to get much traction on radio.

So glad z100 is sponsoring the Adam concert on release day, also the Philly Q102 Springleball concert and KTUphiria are great Top 40 promo!

Chicago Top 40 has increased spins a bit which is great to see. I’m so happy that RCA seems to be making the effort!

  • Anonymous

Usually, songs that are launched on HAC as the primary format  have an adds adds date on it, whereas NCOE only has a Top 40 adds date which would indicate that it is its primary format.

It is not clear to me whether the song has gone for adds on HAC with an unpublished date because it was short notice, or not. Not having passed the adds date could explain the slow climb on HAC, but if it has then the pace it is moving at is a concern.

  • Anonymous

Pretty sure the hac add date is 5/28 and POP 5/29. In the billboard article, its stated after talking about charting on hac that NCOE goes to radio on 5/28. That’s a Monday, hac day.

  • mmb

It’s also been played by wksc in Chicago and will get autoadder on tuesday. It’s getting an auto from Baltimore hac on Monday. I don’t think it had an ” invisible/unannounced” adds date on hac bc the usual stations that add everything in the adds date haven’t added yet

  • Anonymous

I think that RCA wants the song to do well on both formats, but the fact that more Hot AC stations have added or are playing it, would go along with their theory that Hot AC is Adam’s strongest format.  And the somewhat early adds at those stations could be RCA’s way of collecting enough data to help convince other PDs to play the song.

None of the group consisting of Haley, Kris or Adam is in a great situation.  Artists want and need a radio presence before their albums are released, but that won’t be the case.  To Adam’s benefit, he has better management, so he will at least have a few mainstream tv appearances that should help him, but aside from that, everybody is facing the same radio situation that Cook and Archie were, when their albums were released.

  • http://profile.yahoo.com/PVEFG2TOUIXSROKUSO2O2DOWWE Taylor

His fan base may be perceived as being older than the CHR demo, but that is a perception that comes with all of the AI Idols trying to market a song to CHR. (with the exception of Kelly) As a male, Adam’s age is not a factor for CHR play.

  • http://twitter.com/weeeeezle weezle

Penny Burke….Kelly Clarkson is 30 years old…so your comment holds no water..

  • http://www.facebook.com/pam.hart4 Pam Hart

Aren’t there a lot of pop stars older than Adam? Goyte, David Guetta, J Lo, Enrique Iglasias, Train, Adam Levine, etc.? I don’t think Adam fits any formulas because he’s unique – he has the best vocals of any male in Pop. If you listen to his new album, most of the songs are very pop. I don’t think new listeners who like a song (not knowing it is Adam) will start disliking it just because they learn the age of the singer is 30.

  • http://profile.yahoo.com/PVEFG2TOUIXSROKUSO2O2DOWWE Taylor

NCOE has not had an impact date on HAC yet. From the recent BB interview with Adam, RCA and DMG, it appears that the impact date is May 28th for HAC.

  • http://twitter.com/tinawinabina Tinawina

There are pop stars older than Adam but virtually all of them broke through when they were younger.

That said, I don’t think it will be a big issue for Adam long term. Technically he broke onto the scene when he was in his late twenties.

TVOL is not looking good at all. At this point, its future seems to be tied to the (supposed) promo push around the album launch. That’s the only Hail Mary left. I love that song so Boo. **pouts**

So has Free picked up any new stations this past week?

  • Anonymous

Age does play a role in an artist getting CHR airplay, just ask Madonna.  Females will face the discrimination at an earlier age than male artists, but it will eventually happen to them too.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_MV64BS4FSISCASL4P656RXAFYQ Kayla

NCOE has not had an impact date on HAC yet. From the recent BB interview with Adam, RCA and DMG, it appears that the impact date is May 28th for HAC.

Yep, that interview specifically said that NCOE “goes to stations on May 28″ which is HAC day and we already knew from All Access that the impact date for Top40 is May 29th, so it looks like they’re pushing to both formats simultaneously. And I agree it seems like they’re working the HAC stations a bit more on the front end because of Adam’s perceived strength there.

    http://www.allaccess.com/top40-mainstream/future-releases

  • http://profile.yahoo.com/PVEFG2TOUIXSROKUSO2O2DOWWE Taylor

Madonna is 50 and is a female who is still trying to sell sex as her way in. That’s an entirely different situation.

Males tend to get more leadway with the age issue. Adam was in his late twenties when WWFM and IIHY did well. There is no reason why a couple of more years should make a difference. Goyte just appeared on the CHR scene and he is over 30. The lead singer for Fun is also 30.

  • http://www.facebook.com/pam.hart4 Pam Hart

Didn’t Goyte just come on the scene? He’s 31.

  • Anonymous

I think that RCA wants the song to do well on both formats, but the fact
that more Hot AC stations have added or are playing it, would go along
with their theory that Hot AC is Adam’s strongest format.  And the
somewhat early adds at those stations could be RCA’s way of collecting
enough data to help convince other PDs to play the song.

You may be right, although the fact that more stations HAC stations are playing may be because he just had another song on the format, and has done the promo for it.
I have always thought that Adam was more HAC leaning anyway, not because of his age but of his style that I feel would appeal more to an adult audience. Nothing wrong with it, I should add, and many HAC artists have cross-over hits. Now he just needs the hits.. easy…

  • Anonymous

I wasn’t saying anything about Adam, just arguing the point that age discrimination does exist in radio.

As far as Madonna goes, she’s always relied on sex, but even if she were 50 and trying to promote herself in another way, she still wouldn’t get played.  At the most, she would be seen as a novelty.

springboard2 said: I have always thought that Adam was more HAC leaning anyway, not because of his age but of his style

So have I, but I didn’t want to point out that Adam has done better on that format, because some people seemed to use that format as a way to put others down.  It may not be the format that Adam wants to aim for, but it is the format that best fits the songs that he has released.

  • http://www.facebook.com/pam.hart4 Pam Hart

Whether you like someone’s voice is subjective, I agree. But on vocal technique, there is a lot more objectivity, and that’s where I am coming from. A singer can be ranked on Technique, Control, Power & Range, and Versatility. Those are the criteria that the Digital Dream Door used to rank his voice. And I think that is where Meatloaf, opera singers, Queen, and other Adam proponents in the business are coming from. IMO, if Daughtry and Mars were ranked in all four of these categories against Adam by vocal experts (not fans), I believe he would come out ahead.

Adam has an issue with PDs wanting to play him. If Fever were pushed on radio, I think it would have become a big hit. Even now he had to choose NCOE (despite better songs on the album) because that is what the PDs said they would play, but they are still not playing it. There are a lot of mediocre songs being played and becoming hits simply because the PDs are playing them ad nauseum.

He’s had more success in Canada, NZ, Australia, Finland, Asia, etc. simply because the PDs are more willing to play his music there. Are musical tastes really that different from country to country?

  • http://profile.yahoo.com/PVEFG2TOUIXSROKUSO2O2DOWWE Taylor

Of course age discrimination exists in radio, but it doesn’t seem to be a problem for males over and around the age of 30 at this current time.

  • Anonymous

Adam’s Idol performance will be super helpful for album release.  Could not have been a better spot for this.  Well done Adam team!  Also the video for NCOE has yet to be released.  Adam gets a healthy amount of views for his videos so it should help the song along.  As I said before, I am feeling moderately hopeful for the beginning of era 2.

  • Mary Reichardt

PDs don’t seem to want to play any idols (not named Kelly of Carrie).  It’s not just Adam and, if anything, they seem to be marginally more open-minded towards spinning him. (BTIKM is almost universally thought to be a poor first choice single and that still got to 17 on HAC.  That’s not a hit but it is higher than David Cook got off album #2 and higher than it looks like Haley or Kris will get.)

Haley has done pretty well, I think, considering her song to my ears is not a perfect fit  for HAC and is lacking a hook.  The fact that she got into the top 40 at all I think is attributable to the fact that she did a fairly extensive radio tour.

In Kris’ case, TVOL’s struggles are completely related to the fact that RCA never sent him on a radio tour (a couple of phone calls to radio stations do not equal a tour). I could try to hash out why they didn’t, but it’s pointless.  They didn’t and hence his song never had a chance to gain mometum and momentum can be everything.  The sad thing is for once RCA actually made a good choice for a first single which is something they generally suck at.

actually it did have a new station spin it this week – WSIX in Philadelphia finally gave it a non-online spin

And WRMF in West Palm Beach will officially add TVOL on Monday

Removing Dial Global from the HAC panel has  hurt both Kris and Haley in terms of their updates for this reporting period. But it shouldn’t impact TVOL going forward, as DGHA had already cut back on its spins. Not sure what the situation was for Free in terms of how many spins it was getting from that syndicated service.

Yes. One hit wonders can be any age, lasting careers tend to start in their 20s or younger for pop. Lets see if Goyte turns into a lasting pop star. In any case, there are a few exceptions but only a few.

But like I said, I don’t think its an issue for Adam.

  • Anonymous

Adam is certainly getting a lot of promo (magazine articles, GMA appearance, radio shows, etc) leading up to his album release. So he should get a nice boost off all this. The question is whether it will go mainly to his album sales or whether the single will get a real bump as well.

Neither Haley nor Kris is getting the kind of major promo as Adam, although both do have a decent amount of appearances/signings/concerts, etc. lined up to coincide with their album releases as well. So hopefully that will help them. But again, it might help the album numbers more than the single.

  • YankeeFan08

Girlygirl, just curious … why didn’t Kris change management for this era?  Did he have the option to make a switch?  It seems like  staying with 19 wasn’t the best decision (that’s assuming he had any control over it).  What are your thoughts on this?

  • Anonymous

Adam can be ok without American radio support, atleast right now. I just want him to sell albums. Yes radio helps sell, but it is not the only way. Susan Boyle sold without radio play and so have others. The rest of the world is showing support for single and album sales.

    Sorry, missed that one spin.

YankeeFan: I’ve been wondering the same thing. Adam might have seen the writing on the wall and decided to switch to DMG. They certainly seem to be promoting in a more efficient way, in the weeks leading up to the album release and in the past year. Adam’s decision appears to have been a smart move on his part.

From what I have been told, his contract with 19 isn’t up yet. I believe it runs out at the end of this month (if he hasn’t already re-upped with them, that is)

A singer can be ranked on Technique, Control, Power & Range, and Versatility.

And none of this makes someone unique in terms of mainstream/pop airplay or marketability.   There are a lot of singers who have good technique, but they could never be pop singers.  I think that AI has proven that, there are a lot of good vocalists who come through the show, and they are better singers than a lot of the most popular and successful singers who are on the radio, but they can’t direct that into being viable commercial artists, whose music and style fits into what people want today.

We just saw Hollie Cavanaugh on AI, who is a great technical singer, but she has to figure out how to use her gifts to sell a song, by making it believable, delivering the right emotions, and making it relevant to what’s popular today.

Adam can be ok without American radio support at least right now. I just want him to sell albums. Yes radio helps sell, but it is not the only way. Susan Boyle sold without radio play and so have others. BTW, alot of the world  showing support for singles and album sales .

I think people said the same thing about  Clay Aiken.  This is just not a true statement, especially when you are talking about someone who is trying to promote himself as a pop artist.  Without radio, there is pretty much no way for a pop artist to reach a mass audience, or get the cred. that gets someone labeled as pop or popular.  And going along with what was said in the Billboard article, as we saw with Clay, without it, there’s no way for a person to make the transition from being just someone from American Idol.Susan Boyle is a different story, because she was promoted to a different audience, and she wasn’t promoted on the basis of her music.

I wish that were the case, but it’s just not true. SuBo was a viral phenomenon and her album was the go-to gift purchase that year, that situation is just not comparable to Adam’s in any way.

Sure there are other artists that sell without radio play, but that is usually because they are either legacy acts with huge wide decade spanning fanbases, or because they have other avenues for publicity like the Disney kids with their TV shows for example.

Adam is gonna need radio play in order to sustain sales for this album, that’s just how it works. But from that Billboard article it does seem like his label has a plan and is working radio for him. Alll fans can do is buy the album, request the single locally and hope for the best.

Adam is getting support from other countries as I stated in my thread. He can break out elsewhere before America gets on board. NCOE has not gone for adds yet, adds date is may 29th. Duh!

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_MV64BS4FSISCASL4P656RXAFYQ Kayla

I think you’re misinterpreting me, I think the plan the label is working for radio is fine and is rolling forward on schedule. Actually I think you’re writing off the US prematurely when it comes to NCOE and there’s no need to. And yes, initial signs are very positive internationally for NCOE, which is especially nice to see in countries that weren’t onboard with BTIKM.

I was on HDD looking at the upcoming releases and it was interesting to see that John Mayer (who has an album coming out on 5/22) has sold just under 1.2 million copies of his last album. While M5’s (new cd coming out 6/26) last album has sold just over 1 million. Usher’s (new album drops 6/12) last album has sold about 1.3 million.

If these artists, all of whom have had way more past commercial and critical success than 99.9% of the ex-Idols are barely going platinum, why should we expect any of the ex-Idols (or X-Factor people) to be able to do it?

  • Anonymous

I have not given up on American radio to support Adam, NCOE hasn’t gone out for adds yet. He also had 2 songs in the top 40 last album.  What  I meant to say was, if American radio fails him he will do great in Europe and other countries and still be a success.

  • Valentin432

    1.  American Idol – Top 4 – Season 11 – Various Artists

This one is selling well, I don’t remember the compillation albums staying at n°1 for more than 2 days.

Based on the songs being mostly oldies, this seems to indicate that no matter the age of the song, if the performances are great it will sell, altough I still think more contemporary songs tend to sell more.

Time for RCA to pull the plug on TVOL.  They need to move on to single #2 ASAP in my opinion.  I wonder if Haley’s single can hang in there.  I hope so.  Adam’s is creeping up there slowly but surely.  I hope NCOE will have a better run on radio than BTIKM.  The upcoming promo appearances should help.

Nice to see Chris Rene’s Young Homie doing decently on the charts and iTunes (although I’m really ready to hear some new stuff from him).

Except Justing Bieber can’t even get himself that kind of a hit and CMM was a huge hit in Canada way before JB did anything.
Far East Movement released a track with JB featured in it and it isn’t even in the top 100 of Itunes.

Carly Rae has written and sing a hit, that’s the hard way.

So you missed FYE on Finland’s chart and He is on the top 400 in Belgium. Also, he was charting with Better Than I know Myself but it is now NCOE day to start rising on the chart and since it is not being pushed to radio for another 2 weeks this search really doesn’t make sense at the moment. So top 400 in 5 countries between songs is pretty darned good. Remember Bulgaria and Russia next time. :)

  • http://twitter.com/whiskey401 Whiskey

NCEO has been available for itune sales for 3 weeks now in most countries. It went top 400 in 25 countries. With Finland being #1. Like US the song is going to fall and needs radio now for it to rise back up. I would post my daily
track of Euro Itunes since released date but too much work and what’s the point.

    As of now: Top 400

    Never Close Our Eyes
    #39 New Zealand
    #157 Japan
    #266 Bulgaria
    #321 Belgium

    Whataya Want from Me
    #113 Portugal
    #260 Finland
    #300 Luxembourg

    Better Than I Know Myself

Just a note that may help in the international song search – since the demise of the 1024 lists I use Livepopbars http://www.livepopbars.com/lpb1024.php which has the Top 400 songs ready numbered, so useful! I then use my browser find function to locate the songs.

It’s also possible to get different countries and genre numbered song list but unfortunately not the albums.

And checking my own country NZ for Adam Lambert brings NCOE at #36 and no others in the Top 400.

  • Anonymous

NCOE wasn’t top 400 in Belgium whan I posted the charts.
I cannot get the Russian charts.
I haven’t posted the numbers for the Bulgarian chart because I haven’t been through every single country, and Bulgaria isn’t the biggest country or most important country. But I would be grateful if you could please complete the list for us, Roger.
    Top single selling countries:
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Music_industry#Singles_sales

I have to add that the fact that Adam’s singles are only charting in the iTunes top 200 to 400 at best worldwide is a serious concern for me, because however well Trespassing sells on the first week (if it does), it won’t sustain a decent level without successful singles.
Again, I would be happy to be given some solid facts showing a more positive picture :).

  • mmb

Adam, like most other pop/hac artists, will of course need a radio hit to keep cd sales going beyond the initial few weeks.  He had negligible radio play when FYE was released and it didn’t effect his first week sales much (of course he was right off idol and it was black friday, not the case next week).  But then WWFM took off and together with IIHY kept sales going. It is always difficult to recover from a meh-performing lead single.  The choice of BTIKM obviously was not a great one (although I like the song a lot more, and it sounds good, hearing it in the context of the album as a whole…may have made a good 3rd single..but, bygones….).  So Adam and RCA have their work cut out for them with NCOE.  But it is clear that they are giving NCOE a real push — not just throwing it out there with minimal promo and a cheap video as we have seen with other idol artists whose first single has not had great results. They moved to a new single before cd drop week; he will sing it on GMA, at the iheart show, on idol, at the MLB concert etc.  He is doing a bunch of radio shows the week prior to the songs adds date.  He did what appears to be a big video, with a name director that I would assume will come out around the time of the adds date.  As for the international market? Although available on itunes in many markets (not unusual), it either has not gone to radio yet in many of those, or just has gone to radio in the last 2 weeks.  Adam hasn’t done any overseas promo for the song or the cd yet (beyond the trip back in January)– beyond some print media.  He and his PR flack just stated today that he is basically moving to London for the months of June and July and will be doing promo in Europe and then, later, Asia, all summer long.  so I think itis too early to judge how the international markets will respond to either Trespassing or NCOE yet.  Hoping it gets as good a response as FYE/WWFM/IIHY.  Time will tell.

  • Anonymous

To be fair, Itunes isn’t the main retailer in every country, so I think it would be more helpful if we had links to the sites that are listing how much NCOE is selling each week, as well as the ones that are showing what the song is doing on radio overall in those countries.

  • Anonymous

Thank you for the extra numbers, Whiskey and imkhemari.
But I am sorry, I don’t think that they support the claim that Adam is doing much better internationally than he is in the US.

  • http://twitter.com/weeeeezle weezle

I find it Odd that Adams music sales and position are worrying some here, the Album has not dropped yet, the songs have not been performed live except on rare occasion and NCOE has not been released to radio yet…why would we track a song this early…
How in the world would anyone expect a song to go up the charts if it isn’t even released to radio yet?  As for Worldwide Itunes placement, just like WWFM it took Adam performing it and some time to get it going on the charts. At this point I say chill!!! Time will tell,  It’s way too early in the game to start the negative vibe.

  • mmb

Ncoe has been released to radio in the us, Canada and a few other countries. And it’s being played on the radio and charting. It’s us adds date is may 29. But agree that it’s too early to tell what will happen with the song yet

  • http://twitter.com/whiskey401 Whiskey

I don’t think Adam is doing better internationally right now because the song is still in it’s early stage. 2 of NZ biggest station just added the song last week. As for getting weekly sales that isn’t going to happen because I don’t think these countries have a soundscan or billboard. You’ll know how well they sell once they get certified. I’m sure there will be fans that will post charts for these countries. Since this time around International sales are no longer mocked I and I hope fans will post their numbers here.

  • Anonymous

It is possible that iTunes isn’t the main retailer everywhere, but it is unlikley that it is not representative of the overall charts in every country except the US.
All I know is that it is the biggest in the UK similarly to the US.

As far as finding sales or radio play figures, I am sure that people who claim that Adam is doing extremely well internationally will be happy to provide them.

  • Valentin432

I must be in a parralell universe.
I see people celebrete continually when someone gets to the top 20 of the pop charts for half a day or if an Idol gets to the top 10 of the polka chart in Budapest. But when someone has a legit smash that has stayed in the top 10overall itunes charts for 3 months that is selling hundreds of tousands of download per week, people try to poke holes into the accomplishment.

I repeat, CMM was a huge smah before JB did anything and JB has troubles getting himself those kind of sales/radios smash, so implying that Carly Rae success is undeserved when she wrote and perform the single herself is preposterous.

CMM is a bigger hit than Bieber’s current single so it’s not riding his coattails. ;)

It’s just a great, catchy song that doesn’t get old. Looks like a lock to go #1

  • Anonymous

Why would they need to, when you have those who are not fans, obsessively searching for proof that he is not doing well.

  • Tess

I’m so friggin old school, it hurts.  I firmly believe that some artists are single sellers and some sell albums, with a very few able to cover both.  Personally, I think Adam will do much better selling albums in era 2 then singles…and I think his die-hard fans who “collect” everything and spend gads are not as prevalent as they were in era 1.  Why, if you are going to buy a hard cover CD and then download it to your computer or hand-held would you fork out the money to buy a single…and if you are downloading the album that becomes even more of a moot point, I would think.  But then I’m very pragmatic.

I also think that “casual” consumers buy more singles and ARE swayed by what they hear on the radio….but in turn these people rarely buy full albums based on how many great single sellers can’t sell more than a handful.

Will Adam have era 1 numbers….probably not unless something unforeseen happens….but I bet during the life cycle of his next album he will sell.  It won’t be a huge opening weekend with him gone after 5 weeks (aka…an Idol tradition).  He’ll be around as long as he has gigs, with a nice surge when he fronts for Queen, and some good up-ticks when he travels internationally.

I’ll bet that he reaches gold this era with his album (in the states) but it won’t happen overnight.  I also bet that he gets a grammy nomination, too.  We’ll see how I do come next spring.

  • http://twitter.com/whiskey401 Whiskey

And than you have the usual suspects that pop up for only him to let us know their “concerns”.

At the moment ncoe isn’t doing any better internationally than in the us. I dont know why anyone would claim otherwise. But its early days evetywhere. Perhaps we should give it a little time, let him release the cd, do some promo and then see where we are? I think the point to be made internationally is not a definitive ” Adam will/is doing better internationally than in the us”. But Simply that he has markets outside the US that he has been and will be actively marketed in and has had prior success in so that his success is not totally dependent upon the US market. Only time will tell whether he can have similar international success this time around. Maybe he will; maybe he won’t.

  • http://twitter.com/weeeeezle weezle

I am confused…you said NCOE has been released to radio, but the add date is May 29th..???

  • Anonymous

This is a straight forward issue: people claim that Adam is doing much better intrenationally than he is in the US, so I am sure that this claim is supported by solid facts, and I would be grateful if they could share them with us.

  • Anonymous

if American radio fails him he will do great in Europe and other countries. This is based off Europen sales from the last album. not today

  • Anonymous

I think in the FYE era, Adam’s singles did do better in some foreign markets than they did in the U.S. I’m not sure the same thing will happen for the 2nd album.
But obviously, it’s pretty early in the game to know what’s going to happen.

Right now all of the Idol singles on HAC aren’t exactly smashing. But it looks like RCA is saving the big push for later in the month. Why they’re waiting, don’t know.

  • Anonymous

Appreciate your concern, but wouldn’t it be better if you would do your own research, so that you can be 100% sure that it’s the truth and you can come back and give a report to everyone else.

  • Anonymous

I think fans will post if NCOE does well outside the U.S. I hope the album does well even if the single isn’t smashing because RCA is sucking at picking singles these days.

  • Anonymous

It can be concern or what ever, they have the right to ask, but if people are interested in what any of the Idols are doing, all they have to do is search the internet for info.

  • http://twitter.com/whiskey401 Whiskey

Don’t let it bother you so much. At the end of the game the numbers will speak for themselves. Who would have thought FYE would sell 2mil WW.

  • mmb

The adds date is not the same as a release date. An adds date is just a date where the label says – hey, this song is available, we would like you to start playing it. Some stations do not add until an adds date. Label often give a big push around the adds date. But a radio station can play and add a song to its playlist before the adds date. And in the case of ncoe that is happening. Usually a label will try to get some leader stations on board before the adds date so that more will follow on or after the adds date

  • mmb

Are they referring to Trespassing era? I think it is pretty easy to see that fye era Adam did better in some foreign markets than in the us as demonstrated by chart placements and platinum and gold certifications. But how can anyone say he is doing better or worse in Tresoassing era when it hadn’t been released and ncoe just starting out? And he hasn’t been there for promo?

  • Anonymous

    Following this post:

I have not given up on American radio to support Adam, NCOE hasn’t gone
out for adds yet. He also had 2 songs in the top 40 last album.  What  I
meant to say was, if American radio fails him he will do great in
Europe and other countries and still be a success.

I decided to check out how well this era was going internationally, and
in my opinion, singles play a vital part in the success an era , and iTunes is a good way to gauge the impact of singles.

Since NCOE has been released everywhere, we should also have chart data about it, as we had for the singles off FYE.

  • Anonymous

I need to put on my safety gear because I’m going to go out on a limb now. After hearing Trespassing I think for Album2 Adam will tend to be an album seller. I think this album is that good and it’s cohesive enough that many will like the whole enchilada (deeee-luxe album baby, only way to roll). If he has some songs hit T10 then those singles will sell to radio masses who may not bother with the album.

As others have said it’s way way too early in this album cycle to tell about success yet. It will not surprise me if he continues to get better European radio support (also places like Australia and New Zealand) than he does here in the states. I want to see more US radio stations continue to spin his song after he comes by and does his “suck up to stations PDs”, I mean radio promo. At least here in the DC area it felt like they threw his first single out the window after he did his promo. They played it just enough before his barely advertised concerts.

that statement you quoted says “will” not “is”. They think he “will” do great in Europe “IF” American radio doesn’t support Adam. I completely agree with this statement. It’s based on how he did last era. It is too soon to say he “IS” doing better over seas.

  • revcat

Adam recently tweeted FYE went platinim and am assuming he meant the USA as it was already platinum in sevaral other countriies. Keep in mind it takes more units sold to reach platinum ihere in the US than it does in other places. I believe FYE sold 2 million overall so if platinum in US is 1 million copies foreign sales accounts for 50% which means he is equally sucessful abroad. Fact checkers please correct if I am wrong.

Brian Mansfield updated FYE’s sales two weeks ago, so fart the total is 838,000 sold in the US.  The one million total outside of the US seems odd, and could mean shipped, or include other versions like the remixes.

I believe that sentence you quoted is most probably the “looking at past behavior to predict future behavior” philosophy. That philosophy is usually a fairly safe model for all kinds of predictions. Nothing is ever a sure thing, but most people do look to the past to make ball-park predictions about the future. I think it is as simple as that.

RCA reported that FYE had sold 2 million copies worldwide. This total was directly from the record label.

  • Anonymous

Adam didn’t really tweet FYE went platinum. A fan tweet him about it and he didn’t have a clue. The fan had seen it in his biography on the RCA site and thought it was true that FYE was certified platinum in the US. RCA realize their mistake later and that part on his biography has been removed.

I meant to tweet this to Revcat to answer her inquiry, sorry.

  • Anonymous

FUCK YEAH Cher Lloyd!!! SMAAAAAAAAAAAAAASH :D/

  • Anonymous

OK, so no one is claiming that the Trespassing era is going better internationally than in the US,  and every one agrees with each other then.

  • Anonymous

I don’t know what Adam is going to sell, I just hope it’s enough to get him a third album. All what I do know is that I’m looking forward to hearing him play music. Between tv performances, radio shows, Queen/Adam concerts and him going to London, it’s going to be a great time to be a fan of Adam.

  • http://twitter.com/whiskey401 Whiskey

The remixes don’t amount to much. Last numbers fans had for FYE WW sales was back in Jan 2011. RCA recently has those #s at 2mil WW. So 1.2 outside of the US. As for FYE going platinum here I’m guessing RCA shipped some more CD in anticipation that when TPS starts selling people will go back and pick up his last CD. They pulled the press release off as quick as they put it up so maybe they weren’t to ready to make that announcement and will hold off.

  • http://twitter.com/sgjools julia

TVOL appears to be bombing weezle, both in radio play and certainly in sales, can’t you tell by all the ~concern for Adam?

Something I’ve noticed about this blog.  Cook gets dropped? Idol fans get ~concerned for Adam.  TVOL bombs? Idol fans get ~concerned for Adam.

It doesn’t even matter if MJ cuts back on her Adam posts, the idol world revolves around him anyway.

  • Anonymous

How is TVOL doing sales and radio wise, I have not been following it very closely..is it doing good?  Reason I ask I see no debate going on for Mr Allens CD or singles…

There’s been a lot of talk about TVOL in the numbers thread.  There’s even talk about it in this one, including the lack of promotion for the song, being relegated to mainly over night spins, and the song not moving for weeks.  With a lot less promotion, TVOL is doing worse than BTIKM did, and is being as slow as NCOE.

  • http://profile.yahoo.com/PVEFG2TOUIXSROKUSO2O2DOWWE Taylor

No, fans are saying that in the past Adam’s music has done better outside of the US. Looking at the numbers from the past era, many fans feel that the same pattern will happen again.

  • YankeeFan08

The only difference (and a big one that you’re overlooking) is TVOL has already had its official HAC adds date whereas NCOE has not.  It’s still two weeks away.

  • http://profile.yahoo.com/PVEFG2TOUIXSROKUSO2O2DOWWE Taylor

NCOE is doing much better than TVOL did after 3 weeks of being released.
In fact, NCOE is doing better than BTIKM did during the same time period.

  • http://twitter.com/sgjools julia

With a lot less promotion, TVOL is doing worse than BTIKM did, and is being as slow as NCOE.

How is there a ‘lot less’ promo for TVOL though?  It has that whole Clearchannel/Donors chose thing, the Walmart CDs and a freakin’ American Idol performance.  RCA were pushing that song at PDs a year ago ffs.

Same old same old, poor kris gets gets nothing and adam gets the world.  IF my eyes rolled any harder, they’d fall out of my head.

Also, NCOE is moving way faster than TVOL, it’s only a couple of spots outside what may well be TVOLs peak!

  • http://twitter.com/whiskey401 Whiskey

There’s still time for TVOL. Not only does RCA has to get on the ball but so does management. Kris sharing management with Haley may not be such a good thing.
With Adam gone from 19 there should be plenty of promo to go around. If the song stalls there is single #2. His album sticker has 3 songs so you know they will at least work another song.

  • Anonymous

The only difference (and a big one that you’re overlooking) is TVOL has already had its official HAC adds date whereas NCOE has not.  It’s still two weeks away.

For me, the biggest difference is the amount of promotion.  I think that’s huge, especially in light of the idea that Adam won’t need radio.  How many times did he perform BTIKM on television, and the song received a lot of media coverage, and all of that didn’t result in a lot of people buying it.

Maybe the press release was wrong, and that’s why they pulled it.  People do tend to buy copies of previous albums, especially when those albums have spawned a lot of hits, when an artist releases a new cd.  But the call isn’t RCA’s, it’s the retailers, and I just can’t see retailers ordering more than 100K copies of FYE in anticipation that there will be that large of a demand for it when Adam’s new album is released.

  • http://twitter.com/sgjools julia

How many times did he perform BTIKM on television

Twice and neither one of them had a fraction of the audience American Idol does.

  • Anonymous

I haven’t seen what you are talking about. Any “concern” for Adam (which I’m not concerned about) seems to be just about Adam. Like wise Cookie concern, Kris concern etc is about the them unless people are just talking about the music industry in general.

Why wouldn’t Adam fans think the world revolves around him??  LOL

  • Anonymous

Adele’s Set Fire To the Rain fell out of the HAC Top 10, so should go recurrent when the official chart gets published later today. Selena Gomez’s song may get purged, but that isn’t guaranteed.

So anyway, expect all the Idols who are below #10 on this morning’s HAC chart to move up 1 (and possibly 2) spots on the official one. Which will mean Kris will remain in the Top 40 this week.

ETA – Everyone needs to look out for Usher and Rihanna, though. Their latest singles have cracked the HAC Top 50 and I have to figure they will move up the chart relatively quickly.

  • http://profile.yahoo.com/PVEFG2TOUIXSROKUSO2O2DOWWE Taylor

IMO, time has pretty much run out for TVOL. I’m not saying that another single from the album can’t be successful or that TYC can’t sell well, just that TVOL has a slim chance of doing much on the HAC chart and a slimmer to none chance of doing anything on CHR. Time has now become a factor and it is not on TVOL’s side. It is time for RCA to move on to single #2.

And I don’t understand what you mean by Adam not needing radio. TV performances only create short lived boosts, and once the album promo is over, there won’t be many, if any. He absolutely needs radio play.

I don’t know. I went to Target and Walmart yesterday in search of a dvd for my moms mothers day and FYE was restocked st both places.

Target had Trespassing on an endcap, but you couldn’t buy it. Walmart had posters for it, but no cds out yet.

I imagine RCA knows what sales. Many countries don’t give public sales info, but I’m sure Sony/RCA know.

As far as TVOL, he did promo it on AI, that appearance alone garnered more viewers than Ellen. Jay Leno and Kimmel combined.

NCOE is indeed doing much better than those songs at this point, and since it hasn’t even had its adds date, that seems potentially promising. :3  The major pop stations who are taking an interest in the song also seems like a potentially good sign (and things like z100 sponsoring that concert–it would be awesome if they added).

It does seem like there’s lots of interest in Adam/this song, so that’s good.

My guess is Kris will get another single–it would be odd if he didn’t.  He’s had some good promotion–he was on idol, I know that.  But I just honestly, in a totally not-trying-to-be-passive-aggressive way, don’t think there’s much interest in him, and there’s only so much a label can do with that.

But obviously a different song could change that.

NCOE does seem promising so far, and hopefully it’ll keep moving up. The song and the album are certainly getting awesome reviews in general. :D

ARIA charts in Australia have updated and as mentioned in headlines yesterday, Carrie’s Blown Away debuted at #4 on the ARIA Albums chart for all genres and #1 on ARIA’s Country Albums chart. Play On also hit #1 on ARIA’s Country Albums chart on its way to gold+ sales according to CMC Australia.

LA REID is doing an amazing job with his artists NGL! He surely knows how it’s done! I just can’t understand why some labels don’t care about theirs. *sigh*. Cher’s song is going to do well.

Look at how amazing Chris Rene’s single is doing? That song hasn’t dropped below #150 overall on itunes since it’s release, now it’s in the top100 and making it’s way up on the top40 chart too.

It just shows that good promo works! Of course the song being catchy is surely a factor too. It sounds really good on radio.

  • Anonymous

I still think going on Idol has a lot less impact in terms of sales than it used to. David Cook’s single is already out of the Top 100 on iTunes (it is at #121 right now). Stefano’s single slid back quickly. So did Haley’s, so did Kris’. So did Scotty’s. Carrie’s “Blown Away” is still at #51 — but (A) she’s a huge star and (B) the Idol performance coincided with her album release.

  • Anonymous

I understand that the idol bump doesn’t last long, but Cooks single stayed in the top 100 until this morning. Peaking in the 40s I think? TVOL peaked below 100 after the idol performance. Could be a sign that the song just doesn’t connect. Or not.

  • Anonymous

The difference is that, TVOL was out of the top1000 before Kris performed on AI. Cook, Haley, Stefano had just released their songs and were already in the top300 before their performances and that’s the reason those songs charted higher after their AI appearances.

I strongly believe if Kris had performed on AI a day or two after his song was released, it would have been the same, no two ways about that.

But like girlygirltoo said, AI appearances can only do much without airplay and that’s the reason all those songs fall out of the top1000 eventually without much radio support.

A typical example of this is the way they rolled out Chris Rene’s single. It had tons of airplay before it’s release to itunes for sale. The only TV appearance he’s had is ELLEN and that was a day after itunes release. The song never dropped out of the top 150 after that. So to me, airplay is the best promo any song can get! You can have tons of TV appearances but if radio doesn’t play the song, it’s not going to sell unless you’re a big star!

  • Anonymous

It’s entirely possible that TVOL isn’t connecting. It certainly isn’t selling very much. But there’s a difference between Kris’ and David Cook’s appearances on Idol — no one had ever heard David’s song before  and it hadn’t been available for sale prior to the Idol performance. Kris’ single had been out for more than a month by the time he went on Idol. So people had already had the opportunity to hear and buy it. To me, it makes sense that a song that no one had had the chance to purchase before would get a bigger bump than a song that was already in the marketplace. For example, look at Scotty and Stefano — Stefano’s single sold more off his Idol performance than WTT did off Scotty’s. But WTT is on Scotty’s album, so — again — people had had the chance to buy that song prior to his Idol performance. On the other hand, Stefano’s song was brand new when he performed it.

  • Mary Reichardt

I’m just repeating what’s been said ad nauseum, but Kris’ single didn’t break the top 100 after his Idol appearance because it had already been released for a few weeks before that point and slid down the chart.  With almost all other idol appearances this season – Haley, Stefano, David – the idol performance happened the week of the song release.  Before David’s idol appearance, his song was in the low 100s (somewhere between 100-120) and then climbed uip the chart to the 40’s or so.  The Thursday after Kris’ single release his song was also in the low 100s.  If he had performed on Idol that week, I can guarantee his song like everybody else’s would have reached the 30-50 range at least.  Perhaps another example of bad stratgey on RCA’s part.

The truth is, Kris’ idol appearance did everything it should have done if it had been part of a larger strategy and not expected to work miracles.  Sales of TVOL, pre-orders of TYC, and even sales of his first album climbed.  He trended on twitter and got a lot of positive reviews.  However, no Idol appearance is going sell a ton of singles for a song with little radio penetration.

TVOL is selling what any song would sell, when pretty much every station that is playing it is airing the spins between 10 pm-6 am, and usually only once per day.  No song is going to connect with people under those circumstances.

We pretty much saw the same thing with BTIKM, which had more promo than TVOL, was performed on more television shows, and was written about on blogs and in other media articles, but I don’t think it’s AI ever got above six million on Hot AC, because so many of the spins were happening over night, and the vast majority of it’s spins on pop stations also took place when no one was listening to the radio.

On HAC it had a strong first week that gave it a head start but has slowed down since to a similar pace to the other songs it was compared to. The positive side is that it hasn’t passed its adds date yet.

  • mmb

As far as I can recall Btikm was only performed on tv twice – Leno and Ellen. Idol has more viewers that the two of those shows combined, by a large margin. Tvol was also written about in blogs. And, thanks to Adam, was promoted to Adams 1.4 million twitter followers. So I don’t agree that btikm had much more promo than TVOL. But I will agree that it didn’t sell well bc of limited radio ai.

I just did a quick bit of research (not my forte) about cost of pushing a single to radio.  One site was about the cost for a Rihanna single which slated 1,000,000 for radio promotion.  The second grouped cost by different label levels ending with major labels with an expense of about $475,000. I had know idea what the cost items are on this site.
My point is that getting a promoted second single probably won’t happen if the first single does not bring in enough to begin to cover the expense.   Adam is lucky that he is getting a real push for a second single even though the first single could not have begun to cover its cost.  I feel this is evidence that they have a lot of faith in album.http://www.npr.org/blogs/money/2011/07/05/137530847/how-much-does-it-cost-to-make-a-hit-song http://www.radio-media.com/song-album/articles/airplay24.html

In the end, I think it comes down to none of the thee songs, TVOL, Free, NCOE, or four if we include BTIKM, are in the position that the labels and artists wanted or need them to be in the week of or the week before the album release dates.  In light of that, whether or not NCOE is doing better than the other three songs at this point doesn’t really matter.

  • http://profile.yahoo.com/PVEFG2TOUIXSROKUSO2O2DOWWE Taylor

That’s not correct. At a little over three weeks past release to radio date, NCOE has 198 spins, TVOL had 17. NCOE is moving at a much faster pace than TVOL ever did. Plus, NCOE already has some CHR play and the AI at three weeks is much better than TVOL’s at ten weeks and 100 more spins.

  • Anonymous

I believe that a single not moving off overnight spins is the tell tale sign of a song that is supported by the label but not well received by the audience. The stations still play it to show some sign of good will, but keep it at a time when is is not in the way of songs they want to play.
In general, a low AI is bad news…although a low spin count is also bad news..
This not specific to TVOL, it also applies to BTKIM, Free etc…

  • Tess

I’m not going to nit-pick over the singles that have been released by Idols in the last few months.  BTIKM is, obviously, not a radio hit, and its too early to tell if NCOE will be.  I haven’t seen any signs that Kris, Stefano, Cookie, James or Haley’s current singles have connected.  The bottom line for me is that, apparently, these songs are just not that good since even the 16 million fans of AI haven’t been able to lift them above the bottom rungs in airplay or sales.

If Adam can get the same kind of interest on AI that Scotty got, where his album got a pretty good increase for a few weeks, I’ll be happy.  If the single gets some legs I’ll be happy, too.  If not, I’ll just chalk it up to wrong sound and hope his album will keep him afloat.

Based on all the fancy promo that has been done for lots of singers the past year to get their singles played and heard in the real world I know that promo isn’t always the culprit either positively or negatively.  A song either resonates or it doesn’t.  If it does its amazing how fast word of mouth will lift it into the stratosphere.  Whatever anyone else thinks no one will ever convince me that it isn’t the best marketing tool out there.  One person going gaga over a you tube vid can start the explosion…remember videos don’t go viral by themselves.

I would suspect that RCA had higher expectations for a song that will have been out for 12 weeks before the album release (and 10 weeks past its impact date) as TVOL has been, than the expectations RCA has for NCOE that has been out to radio for three and a half weeks (and two weeks away from its impact date).

I doubt RCA was expecting NCOE to do much on radio in that amount of time, especially enough to affect album sales. Now, songs that have been out for 12 weeks and well past their impact date are a different story.

  • Anonymous

It costs a lot of money $475,000 for a major label to push a single to the radio exclusive of video.  Two unsuccessful singles could cost the label  maybe $900,000.  That is a lot of money.   We fans always want more singles, but the label must look at cost vs return.  Adam was lucky to get a fully supported second single.  I think it shows they have a lot of faith in the album.

Of course they do, but that’s only because they had higher expectations for BTIKM, and when that didn’t work out they had to change course.

But, I think they wanted more for the song than just to be on four or five pop stations at this point, and getting plus six spends a day on Hot AC.  They also probably thought that after getting five Hot AC adds when the song first came out that it would have gotten more than five since then. And they probably thought that given the number of summer concerts that Adam is doing that more pop stations would start playing the song.  It’s not like the add date is far away, or like it’s unusual for stations to start playing the song, since they already have it.

  • Anonymous

I didn’t say that NCOE wasn’t ahead, I said that  on HAC it gained its  lead on the first week or so, then slowed down. Its bullet went from +93 to + 54 to + 37.

It is now moving at snail pace in the same way as the other songs, and whether the snail is slightly faster or not makes little difference.

  • http://profile.yahoo.com/PVEFG2TOUIXSROKUSO2O2DOWWE Taylor

If RCA held up the album for a new single release, they would have released the second single earlier than 3 weeks before album release date. Adam could have switched over to singing and promoting a new single on his radio tour. They obviously had some other idea on the timing of a second single release in relation to the album release.

TVOL hasn’t been out for 12 weeks. It was sent to radio on March 6 and went for adds on March 19.

The official HAC chart has been published. Surprisingly, 3 songs were removed from the chart, so here are the Idols’/X-Factors’ official HAC chart ranks for this week:

No. 5 (down 3 spots from last wk) Kelly Clarkson – Stronger
No. 12 (up 3 spots from last wk)   One Direction – What Makes You Beautiful
No. 16 (up 5 spots from last wk)   Carly Rae Jepsen – Call Me Maybe
No. 27 (up 5 spots from last wk)   Carrie Underwood – Good Girl
No. 29 (up 4 spots from last wk)   Daughtry – Outta My Head
No. 34 (up 4 spots from last wk)   Haley Reinhart – Free
No. 38 (up 2 spots from last wk)   Kris Allen – The Vision Of Love

I’m only seeing the Top 40. I believe Adam would be at #42 on the chart with Never Close Our Eyes, however, since he was at #45 this morning.

TVOL will be out (released to radio) for 12 weeks at the time that TYC comes out. That is what my post said. I did not say that TVOL has been out for 12 weeks at this current time.

You keep mentioning publicity of btikm compared to TVOL, yet ignore the fact that TVOL was seen by probably three times as many viewers as Adams two performances on television. Kris had Internet write ups about his song, he had it being played in the background of his spot for DonorsChoose on all Clearchannel stations and since you mentioned Adam being able to tweet his song to his million plus followers, Adam tweeted multiple times pimping TVOL and mentioned it in radio interviews.

I don’t know what RCA expected from Adam, I do know they seem to be FIRMLY behind him and this project and for that, I’m extremely grateful

I still have never heard Young Homie on the radio. I should look on Mediabase to see if any of the stations here in L.A. are playing it, because it’s a little weird not to have heard it yet when it is charting pretty well and selling steadily.

I just checked some numbers at Amazon and am starting to get worried about Kris’s album.  :(

    #10 – Adam Lambert – Trespassing (Deluxe) – $11.99 (68 days in top 100)
    #133 – Haley Reinhart – Listen Up! – $8.89
    #158 – Adam Lambert – Trespassing (Standard) – $9.99
    #238 – Kris Allen – Thank You Camellia – $8.59

I know Amazon doesn’t represent a lot of sales, but it’s still a comparison.

Trespassing is #10 at amazon best sellers list and has been hanging around there for the last couple of days.

  • Anonymous

Lol he’s Finlands son in law :)

Expectations about Kris’ first week numbers have been talked about on this thread before, and most fans and non fans believe that his numbers might come in around 20,000, but given the lack of promotion and the lack of airplay, that might be reaching.  I think anyone who has ever followed the numbers, as well as Kris’ career, knew from the start that his album was going to follow the path of his single(s), so if the single isn’t doing anything then the album won’t sell.  But, eventually that will be the case for everyone, even Haley and Adam.  They may get an initial boost from hardcore fans, but for the albums to have legs, the singles will have to connect with people.

As far as Amazon goes, just compare their top sellers chart to the Billboard top 200.

  • http://twitter.com/graffeodl Dana Graffeo

Not sure where you are getting your info but here is Amazon’s description for Best Sellers.

    “About Best Sellers in Music

These lists, updated hourly, contain best-selling music releases on CD and Vinyl.”

Since it says best SELLING I don’t see any indication that page clicks are being counted.

  • Anonymous

I thought that they took page clicks into account, because I know that we’ve had this same conversation before, when people have been concerned about idol alums placement on the chart.

  • http://twitter.com/graffeodl Dana Graffeo

Maybe there used to be a what’s popular list or something but Best Sellers and Movers and Shakers both refer specifically to sales.  There are currently lists for Most Gifted and Most Wished For and there is a recommended list that is based on your own purchase history.  There may have been a Most Viewed list at some time as I think I vaguely remember something like that.

All the Idol songs are moving at a snail’s pace on HAC. ;0  I’m not sure it’s that big a deal which snail is moving at a faster rate than the other snails.

  • Anonymous

As people have said on here before, Amazon accounts for a fairly small percentage of total sales.   And since the chart is constantly updating, it isn’t that unusual to see albums move in and out of the Top 100 or Top 200 or even Top 500 fairly quickly.

I have seen some Idols ranked high on the amazon chart that end up not selling particularly well. On the other hand, I’ve seen Idols that aren’t ranked particularly high on the amazon chart sell just fine. Same thing with the iTunes rankings.
Since there are multiple places to pre-order these guys’ music, including on their own websites, they aren’t likely to have a huge percentage of their sales from any one store/website, etc.

In my opinion, it’s really not worth stressing over, since, aside from buying an artist’s music ourselves, there’s nothing we can do about these rankings anyway. They are what they are.

It’s taken me three long years to develop this attitude — hopefully I don’t backslide when the 1st week numbers for Adam, Kris and Haley get announced :)

    YMMV, of course.

Trespassing is #1 on Barnes & Noble after being at number 2 since I have been checking site for about three days.  I think Barnes & Noble sales are negligible, but ranking high on these list has got to be a positive sign for interest in the album. It is $9.83 at B&N compared to $11.99 on Amazon which might be why it is higher.

I feel sorry for those who are buying TPS standard album. They are missing out on some bonus track gems. Adam has a history of selling better with physical CDs than digital CDs and him being 68 days on top 100 is showing consistent sales. Amazon is usually an indicator on how the wind is blowing so things are looking good. I hope he gets an itune banner for Tues.

    47 43 ADAM LAMBERT Never Close Our Eyes 198 174 24 1.324

#41 and #43 are only separated by 3 spins. You have to go all the way up to
#37 to find a song with an AI as high as NCOE and that is a song that crossed over from CHR.

Ok, this is strange. On the All-Access HAC chart this morning, Kris had 298 spins and a +1 bullet for the reporting period that ended Saturday. But on the official published chart, he has 307 spins and a +10 bullet for this same reporting period. So 9 more spins magically appeared between this morning and this evening. I’m assuming something was messed up on his original MB report, but it’s interesting (the extra spins are nice, of course)

Interesting article, and from looking at labels’ behaviour, I guess radio promo is by far the most expensive part of any release. This would explain why they go though the effort of producing material that they don’t push to radio.  If it doesn’t look like the sigle is well received, and the album won’t sell gazillions anywau, they count their losses and pull away.

As for Adam’s second single, I don’t think that they really have started the big push, I think that they are waiting to have the initial album sales to fully assess whether it is worth it or not, and hence the reason for the late adds date.
They may also want to use good album sales to try and convinced PDs that the song is worth playing.

Kris’ duet partner, Meiko, is #50 on the official HAC chart for her own single (Leave the Lights On). Good for her :)

From observation, I think that for idol alums, Amazon is generally a reasonable indicator of how the sales are going, much better than iTunes.
However, in the Kris and Haley’s case, the pre-orders are lower than they should be because the De Luxe version is not available, and those who pre-order are usually fans who want all the available tracks.

Since people don’t normally buy a lot of cds from either Itunes or Amazon, what can the chart tell us?  What does it tell us about younger acts like B.O.B., One Direction, and others, who are in the top on the Billboard top 200, but not in the top 20 on Amazon?

I know that Amazon have a small share of the market, but by observing Idol sales, my opinion is that their chart is usually reasonably in tune with the overall sales, for Idols.
By reasonably in tune I mean a top 10 may be top 20+ in sales, a top 20 top 40, but not top 200. It is important to look at how long the album stays at a level though.
Imo, Walmart charts are meaningless, and iTunes not as useful.
    JMHO.

    lol you are so funny.

Wait until the song goes for Radio adds at the end of the month all of this is premature but if it makes you feel better post the numbers. We should do that side by side for the other songs Idols have released. That might be interesting.

As a huge supporter of Adam’s I am surprised by your vigorous support for him and his music. It is awe inspiring.

lol Did anybody say her success was undeserved? I love the song. LOVE the big gay twist at the end of her video. The facts remain the same however that Bieber tweeted about her before she started selling in the US. Just saying it is a fact.

I love Trespassing. I think it will sell and I am confident it will do extremely well. It wouldn’t matter how much it sells though for some people let’s get real as Adam would say some people just throw more shade than a cloudy day. lol

I am with you Tess. I think good album sales and critical aclaim. I am betting he will get a grammy nomination as well.

Right now NCOE isn’t getting enough radio play to do much to help the album. I don’t really understand the RCA strategy of waiting two weeks for the official adds date. But RCA are weird this second album era.
I think Adam should be proud of the good reviews. Unfortunately reviews -good or bad- don’t have much to do with music sales. ;!

I think we will have to wait until this week after the Idol performance and Clear Channel plays and concerts and see how NCEO and trespassing are doing.

For those of you earlier, who were saying that NCOE isn’t doing all
that well internationally, it’s because it wasn’t released to radio at
the same time, to everywhere internationally at the same time.

Here’s a posting from Australia, saying that even though it was
released for sale a couple of weeks ago, it’s just now being serviced to
    radio..

I said that there was no indication that NCOE was doing well, and there wasn’t, not it was doing badly. If the reason for the low iTtune chart positions is that RCA released the song for sales before it was sent to radio everywhere, then it is a good explanation. It is the strange way of doing things, but never mind this.
As for Trespassing, it is a very good that it is #1 on iTunes Finland.

Why is there so much concern for a song that hasn’t even officially gone for adds yet?  I don’t get it.

Shouldn’t folks be concerned about the songs that have already gone for adds …  in fact weeks ago in some cases … but are just treading water?  Seems to me the “concern” is misplaced.

I know that none of these online sales sites provide a huge percentage of anybody’s sales, but I view them rather like a political poll where from a small sample a general trend is extrapolated.  Now real pollsters are very careful to have unbiased samples and by there nature a sales site is not that.  For example, I have heard that Amazon’s clientele is older and better educated than the general population.  Also selling price influences position on site to a degree hence Adam is #1 on B&N.  Still all in all I think that these sites can be used to assess general popularity and if one looks at others in high placement: Adele, Carrie Underwood, Jack White, Lionel Richie it validates this argument.
