Chart Watch Extra: 20 Years Of Top Songs a.k.a. Songs we love to hate.

    CMT Pure 12-Pack:
#05 You Take Yourself With You (Bo Bice)
    #07 Farmer’s Daughter (Crystal Bowersox)

I know zip about country or the country music channels. Why is Farmer’s Daughter still on the list? How does this list work differently than others? The song to my knowledge isn’t on any country charts and it has pretty much fallen off the BB top 200 albums. So I don’t get this at all.

AT40 HAC countdown for May 7/8 from Pulse:

    10 09 (27) Christina Perri-Jar of Hearts
    09 10 (09) Maroon 5-Never Gonna Leave This Bed
    08 08 (28) Pink-Raise Your Glass

    03 01 (11) Cee Lo Green-Forget You
    02 02 (14) Pink-Perfect
    01 03 (12) Adele-Rolling In the Deep (1 week at #1)

    Noteworthy:
September leaves the countdown after 44 weeks.

And, for the first time in 6 1/2 years, there is no Idol song on the countdown. *sigh*

Still no DYWS on the countdown although the song above it on Mediabase (Happily Ever After) was a breakout song. DYWS is working up a head of steam on HAC so I expect we could see it next week.

Matthew Morrison’s Summer Rain has revived on AC and now has a decent bullet for the format. Not sure when they’ll release Still Got Tonight in light of that, but even if it doesn’t get a performance on Idol, maybe it will on SYTYCD. Or maybe he’ll sing Summer Rain on the Idol Finale, lol.

S9 was like the twilight zone. Did it even exist?

Is there any movement with TLG for Cookie? Or is it too soon to expect much?

Thanks for the info on CMT. :)

And, for the first time in 6 1/2 years, there is no Idol song on the countdown. *sigh*

Kind of sad but I guess it is really not that surprising. AI9 was a bust when it comes to radio hits, and there are really only a few Idol alums who have more than one HAC hit songs and a recent hit — Daughtry (last album release was 7/2009 so that project is played out), Kelly (between projects), Adam (between projects), Jordin (between projects) —

The only Idol with active music right now and a real shot at HAC airplay is Cook.

(sorry if I missed someone with multiple recent HAC AT40 songs — but I was just trying to make a point about where Idols are on their project schedule vs. present an exhaustive list.)

I think that all one Idol alum needs to do is release a song titled “F**k _____” and it would probably shoot up the charts. :) Kidding sort of.

  • Valentin432

This is the 8th week at the top of the CMT countdown for DYWS. I’m guessing this means it has a very good chance to win that CMT awards for collaborative video.

  • idolhound2011

Well I have to say I dont think AL9 was worst than this year. Lee did make top 40 in play, and he did cross to pop, but I never saw Crystal climb any radio chart.

  • http://emuisemo.pbworks.com eilonwy

Is there any movement with TLG for Cookie? Or is it too soon to expect much?

Way too soon. Tracking an HAC single is kinda like tracking one’s stock portfolio in a dull but reasonably prosperous year. Stuff happens very, very slowly.

  • Eileen99

(sorry if I missed someone with multiple recent HAC AT40 songs — but I was just trying to make a point about where Idols are on their project schedule vs. present an exhaustive list.)

I’m not sure how exhaustive a list it really is if your criteria is multiple recent HAC hits?, but Cook fits with at least Light On & Come Back To Me (was Rainbows on the countdown?), and of course there is Kris with LLWD & TT. All these songs were on the AT40 countdown for many, many weeks. Lee made the countdown with SS, so there was one S9 alum on the AT40 HAC countdown. Hopefully we’ll have some new releases to discuss sooner rather than later.

It’s too bad Daughtry didn’t release another single, but I understand the idea of limited returns for multiple singles.

Way too soon. Tracking an HAC single is kinda like tracking one’s stock portfolio in a dull but reasonably prosperous year. Stuff happens very, very slowly.

Agreed, watching HAC can really try one’s patience. When was the last time there was a leak of where TLG is on HAC? It seems like I saw it was in the 60′s a week or so ago, and we know spins are increasing. It has to be getting close to Top 50.

  • car3278sweet

AI9 was a bust when it comes to radio hits

I think this blanket statement is a bit too soon and a bit too broad. Maybe you are saying in the context of HAC – so okay, Lee and Crystal didn’t set the HAC world on fire. I don’t think Crystal was even aiming for that route anyway. But to dismiss all of the rest in one fell swoop? Well, okay. CJames hasn’t even put out his first single, but of course that won’t be HAC either. But who knows if Siobhan or another one will spike with something. I guess we’ll have to see.

Well I have to say I dont think AL9 was worse than this year.

I will be all kinds of astonished if one of these current kids makes a big splash on HAC. I will be happy for them, but astonished. My bet is Pia still has the best shot.

    Got it. Thanks eilonwy.

  • Trina

If Scotty, who I feel is most likely to win, releases music he won’t be targeted to HAC so that shouldn’t be a benchmark for success or failure.

  • easyrider707

Interesting coments, I was completely unaware that the AI’ s first 8 seasons of contestants had stopped producing records. Took Bruce Springsteen, Allman Brothers and others several years to even get on radio and Bruceks first album sold less than 25,000 and his second even less.

Radio? Most songs, there are some current songs mixed in, are not from this year and we are lucky to hear one from this decade unless rap or pop.

I guess this is old and now things hapen faster. Wait, even Adele (I think number 1 now) was booked to play hbere at the Orange Peel in a few weeks. Capacity is 943. Well, the shbow did get moved a few weeks ago to the auditorium, but clearly a few months ago even Adele was not expecting such a break out.

Is it not a touch of some kind of incompetent hatred to rest the success of fold of AI artists on those that have only had less than a year to get going. The industry does not typically or historically work this way, nor should it. Not all artists appeal to “Teen” or “Seventeen” magazine and this years winner likely will not, but Stephano could make some noikse that way.

  • Elliegrll

Crystal’s single was released to HAC., but only five stations added it.

I wonder what will Jive do with Crystal. She seemed to connect with consumers once people heard her music, but any success she had seemed to come about because of Gina Orr, and not Jive. She definitely seems to be making a move to position herself to appeal to country music listeners, so will she continue with Jive, be moved to another Sony label, or go somewhere else.

  • easyrider707

If HAC is the determining factor is success, then what are all we fans that are not HAC and the country stations that outnumber them 5 to 1 – what are we? Greg A”bum just put out a new album – never heard a radio song other thban some AAA. Same goes for REM. Never heard Mumford and Sons. Avette Brothers, seventh album – neverf heard them. Are all these folks, half of whbom are in the ROck and Roll HOF no good?

I hardly ever listen to radio and I am positive radio is a follower of trends in music in the multi-media world and not a leader as 40 years ago.

  • Elliegrll

am positive radio is a follower of trends in music in the multi-media world and not a leader as 40 years ago.

It depends on what genre someone is in. I think it’s going to be very hard, if not impossible, for pop, r&b and country artists to reach their intended audience without the benefit of radio. But, radio is not a big deal for Triple A or indie rock type of artists. It’s also not a big deal for older more established acts, but despite what some people might think, AI alums aren’t established artists, at least not when the first come off of the show, so they need radio in order to let people know who they are as artists, and to show that they aren’t just tv personalities.

  • Andy11

Most AI alums have an advantage over many pop singers in that they can actually sing. So the show may be better for people that want to make a mark as live performers rather than recording artists. Success live does not always correlate with success on radio and recording. The grateful dead and other jam bands are good examples. Going broadway is another.

I don’t see where this news made it here, but The Last Goodbye is reported to have been #40 on the Mediabase rolling chart for AC today. That should maybe be added to the list above. It may be only on two stations in that format, but they are big and spinning it a decent amount for AC. I guess we were so busy looking for it on HAC that we missed it on AC.

  • girlygirl

I read that David C’s single would break into the Top 40 on AC chart, but it’s not listed on the 24/7 day chart. Maybe when the published chart comes out later today?
