The X Factor was number 1 last night, at least in ratings in the 8 pm hour (Survivor had more viewers. In the 9:30 half hour, Modern Family totally kicked X Factor’s butt)

However, The Voice is decisively winning the ratings war so far.  The Voice has consistently earned ratings over 4.0 and has beat X Factor in the number of viewers as well. However BOTH shows were down this week compared to last.

FOX was the number 1 network with adults 18-49, but CBS won with total viewers.

On FOX, The X Factor garnered a 3.3 adults 18-49 rating,  down three tenths from last week’s 3.6.

On CBS, Survivor: Philippines earned a 3.0, down two tenths from last week’s premiere  3.2 adults 18-49 rating. The season premiere of Criminal Minds earned a 3.1, down a full ratings point from last year’s 4.1 premiere rating. The season premiere of CSI earned a 2.5 adults 18-49 rating

Ratings Breakdown: Via Marc Berman

CBS inched past Fox by one-tenth of a rating point in the overnights on this first Wednesday of the new TV season. But the dominant network among adults 18-49 will likely be a race between ABC and Fox.

Survivor: Philippines on CBS is alive and well, with a dominant 6.9 rating/11 share in the overnights at 8 p.m., which was right on par with the South Pacific edition one year earlier (which trailed competing The X Factor on Fox).

The X Factor on Fox, meanwhile, was on the map with a 7.0/11 in the overnights from 8-10 p.m., peaking at 9:30 p.m. with a 7.4/12. But compared to the year-ago evening (8.0/13 on 9/28/11), this was down by 12 percent.

I agree.  American Idol brings in so much money and their whole production looks so amateur.

Can you elaborate? The reason I’m genuinely curious is that I thought Idol’s brand revolves around bringing in undeveloped talent or talent that’s off the grid, giving them an unadorned, national platform with minimal bells and whistles and letting raw talent wind its way week by week, until you reach the big stage where they then begin to add the fashion advice, the lighting, some singers, and mentors.

The difference being, The X-Factor starts out big, with everyone’s name in flashing lights — like they’re already superstars — and we/the judges have to decide who has the “it” factor. In contrast, Idol sees its contestants as all wannabes/novices, with one person ultimately emerging as the American Idol, through a grinding, months’ long process. The first process would naturally lend itself to being more produced and polished, while the second one starts simply — in an audition room — and phases in these other elements. Granted Idol never quite reaches the point where there are a bunch of dancers frolicking all over the place (except on the finale) but I’m very grateful for that. Besides, the finale is part crowning of the Idol and part celebration.

Last night’s ratings for XF will probably look like a walk in the park compared to those for tonight.  They will be going head-to-head against The Big Bang Theory and Two and a Half Men on CBS and the highly-touted debut of Last Resort on ABC.

I can”t give the X Factor credit for having high production values, when they can’t bother to match up the fake crowd reactions to the images that they air.  Why do they insist on showing the crowd siting on their hands, while the audio would make it seem like the everybody is on their feet and clapping.

  • elliegrll

The  X Factor’s ratings went up by a tenth of a point to a 3.4.

Xf has been boring compared to voice auditions..Brit is not adding anything. All the fake judges behind scenes stuff doesn’t work…lack iof host and more emphasis on sob stories doesn’t work either. Host helps audience bond..bad move. It feels like idol with an audience..live shows should be better but will it be too late..esp if voice improves its post audition rounds. Xf just has no buzz and way too much competition..now Marian vs Nicki may create major buzz..and I’m tired if these celeb offsprings

  • Goodie2

After a decade people may also be over Simons schtick. Brit is boring so far except for faces. It is a bit boring so far. The judges don’t really fight over contestants; its usually 4 yeses or Nos so no drama. Its weird with no host, which is the viewers connection to the singers. Way too many staged clips with judges..did we need the whole straw hat BS? It is like idol with an audience for auditions so far. Live shows should be better but maybe too little too late. And we get it every singer is poor or has gone thru tragedy ..I also think people are tired of the joke contestants that are humiliated..the voice cut that out too. All these xf things besides backup dancers on live shows. And groups is what idols been doing

  • Goodie2

YeAh poor Demi going to buy all their records…but they won’t release everyone..yes la and Simon they’re all stars..

X-Factor is the Jerry Springer show of the talent shows.

    Bullseye! Well done!

and over the top hyperbole(you are going to be a huge superstar! You sing better than Beyonce!).

All the singing shows are the same with their OTT hyperbole. Nothing compares to 15? standing Os for Joshua last year and telling him he was the best singer in the past 50 years. !!!!!!!

The sob stories are out of control on all these shows, including Idol. AI had a sob story out of a contestant coming from divorced parents. The backstage drama? Look at Hollywood week on AI every year. They edit to make things appear differently than they are.

    They are all the same.
