Ratings are in from TVByTheNumbers

American Idol  earned a 4.4 18-49 rating, shedding three-tenths from last Wednesday’s 4.7. However, Idol still easily lead a FOX win for adults 18-49 ratings and total viewership on the night.

Dancing with the Stars Monday performance (8-10p) 2.7 7 16.370
The Voice Tuesday performance (8-10 PM) 3.8 10 10.740
The Voice Tuesday results 9:00PM 4.4 11 11.900

Whoa. That’s quite a dip for Idol this week. It still beat DWTS  and The Voice in the demo and tied The Voice finale (although the numbers for Idol often tick higher in the final ratings)

Wow by now the ratings should’ve trended upwards. Something is not right.

It’s the darn 2-hour episodes.  Instead of wasting 2 hours of my Wednesday evening with filler, commericals, and only like 20 minutes of real, solo-singing…I just watch the show online later that night/the next day.

I can’t say I’m too shocked by the dip.  I blame part of it on the theme week.  Some of the performances were good but some were a little on the sleepy side.

  • http://twitter.com/ladymctech ladymctech

I am not surprised by the drop. For one, you can watch performances online, skipping all of the garbage in between. For seconds, this season became quite predictable given the outcome of the last week or two. For the first time in a while, I didn’t watch the live performances last night.

Well we need to see if it adjusts up later and by how much, it may not be far off from last week. That said:

Wow by now the ratings should’ve trended upwards. Something is not right.

Agreed. Competition is tight and we are nearing the end. An uptick should be underway.

Anyone have the half hour breakdown?

  • Anonymous

It actually isn’t that bad when you consider that last week’s initial ratings were 4.5. So once it’s adjusted up it should close the gap. And it has been staying steady in total viewers in the 16 million range.

I guess a lot of people miss skylar.

  • http://twitter.com/desireechick kesia monteith

    I know I did :(

  • http://twitter.com/ladymctech ladymctech

Agree about missing Skylar. She was the only country artist this year. Perhaps fans of that genre have stopped tuning in.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_AGWO435FL6UN2ICRVTFLWRJZSA Lexie

All I know is, as a country fan, there’s really nothing in the show for me anymore.  Last year, of course, you could have said the opposite for the last two…but that was only one show (and an off-night).  I feel like this year has become the year of the big voices (and P2)…and little connection to the artists as people.  I was trying to think about what I know about these guys outside the music…and it’s not much.

For example, last year, I wasn’t a James fan, but I knew he liked wrestling, I knew about his wife-to-be and his son, his disabilities.  I could have said several, if not many, things about most of the top S10.

I was trying to think of what I know about this year’s contestants…and it’s not much at all.  P2–his family owns a pawn shop?  Help me out here…

  • http://twitter.com/tinawinabina Tinawina

P2′s family owns a pawn shop. His brother-in-law is a musician. He has a dry sense of humor and he doesn’t like change. He loves Dave Matthews and plays a mean guitar.

Joshua is a preacher’s kid who was afraid to fly on an airplane. He’s the youngest in his family and his mom says he was a character growing up. He’s from Louisiana and likes crawfish. Hollie is his bestie. Apparently he sings all the time and is funny off camera.

Hollie lives in Texas but was born in England and has a weird mishmash accent because of it. She has a brother who teases her. She’s adorable and bubbly. She loves her some big voiced pop divas. She’s gaining in confidence every week.

Jessica is a military brat whose been home schooled. She’s been singing on stages since she could walk. She seems very close to her family and she also comes across very reserved. Seems to be raised on R&B/soul/blues etc music and may not know much else. There were rumors she was dating DeAndre. She idolizes Beyonce.

    There you go! LOL

I too watched the three performers I still like and didn’t waste my time with the endless amounts of filler. The judges are biased and couldn’t give a good critique to save their lives. Watching the performances online, I can make my own decision without Steven repeating what Jennifer says. Jennifer focusing on how beautiful everyone is and Randy trying to be Simon.

Country is my favorite but I was not watching for Skylar I just like the show and actually all kinds of music.  The show went on forever  lastnight and the duets/groups were for the most part bad.  These are talented singers but their voices do not blend well. I found myself leaving the room everytime they started one.  I could see if you were a more casual viewer you would have given up waiting for the solos.

  • chearts77

I’m gonna call it the Skylar effect cause it makes me feel better to do so.  ha ha

I was not into this season at all until I heard Skylar on top 12 girl night.  She sucked me in with all her energy and powerful vocals.  Last week, the energy and excitement for me left the show.  I did not watch last night.  Had no reason to.  :(  Looking at the song spoilers posted here made me miss Skylar so much.  There was no “fire”on that list.  Just a bunch of ballads.  zzzzzzzz

  • superfudge

Probably cause this final 4 is terrible.

  • Anonymous

Last night was the first night since I started watching back in Season 3 that I chose not to watch an episode of Idol. I was a big fan of Elise, but truth be told, I knew she was going to get eliminated mid-pack. But then when Skylar left, I felt that the show lost its excitement. I DO think the Final 4 are talented, but no one is getting me fired up– I don’t feel that I have a reason to tune in. Normally, in years past, my favorites almost never win, but I do find a few contestants engaging that I watch the rest of the season… but this year, I just can’t get excited about the final 4. All are talented, I just don’t really feel like watching.

  • Kylee

Probably cause this final 4 is terrible. Idol has no excuses

I disagree. This is one of the most talented top 4′s ever. They are all super talented.

At least DWTS and the Voice are up against one another so they have 2 voting shows going head to head.

Idol has a lot of big competition. Modern Family, Survivor, Criminal Minds.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_AGWO435FL6UN2ICRVTFLWRJZSA Lexie

Tinawina, I didn’t mean that literally:))

But, thanks for going to all that trouble.  So, we do know a little about each of them…and I do agree they are talented…I just don’t feel that connected…and I may not be the only one…

  • superfudge

Those shows are completely different, though. Why do you think Idol isn’t on the same time as DWTS anymore like it used to be? Because they do share a similar audience and they know it. Same with a show like Community and the Big Bang Theory. If I’m a producer for the Voice I would much rather go against Modern Family and Criminal Minds because while I’m sure there are viewers who watch both shows, for the most part, the demographics are different. It’s like putting the Voice on the same time as Glee. 2 shows that attract people who enjoy singing on t.v. and you could double your viewers if they were on separate nights but you are making viewers pick one or the other.

So while people rejoice Idol and believe Idol is the “people’s choice” I stand firmly in belief the playing field would look real different if it wasn’t for DWTS.

IIRC Idol moved to Wednesday/Thursdays because they can charge higher rates for ads on Thursdays.

You’ve offered no substantiation of your claim that Modern Family and Idol don’t share enough of an audience for that competition to detract from either’s ratings. I can refute that theory by pointing out how Modern Family’s demo rating has taken a pretty big hit going up against Idol (as opposed to when it went up against X Factor) and that DVR ratings for Modern Family have gone up since Idol started. Here’s a link confirming the 2nd fact:

So why is “Family” so much stronger than any other show on television in DVR replay?

Certainly its timeslot is the biggest factor. It airs opposite “American Idol’s” Wednesday performance edition, and after “Idol” returned to the schedule in January, “Family’s” DVR viewership spiked.

Most viewers prefer to watch “Idol” live so that they can discuss the episode with friends via social media as it unfolds or at work the next day around the watercooler.

Since there’s not as much of a timeliness factor to “Family,” viewers will watch “Idol” live and tape “Family” for later viewing.

  • superfudge

I’m not saying they don’t share any of the same audience at all because that just isn’t true. But I feel pretty comfortable in predicting if your show is the Voice/Idol/XFactor/AGT/DWTS then you are taking a much harder hit if they’re going up against each other over a t.v. drama or comedy.

    Idol is losing viewership because;
    1. The judges are pointless, they need to clear house next year
    2. The final 4 are not that good or interesting. Josh and Jessica are ok but not amazing, P2 is kind of weak but has some moments and Hollie is kind of like a deer in the headlights.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_SYFK77IYLRQIVATQ2MJKSW2J7Y Pam

Here are last night’s final adjusted ratings from tvbythenumbers.

American Idol, Modern Family, Law & Order: SVU, Survivor: One World, and Criminal Minds were all adjusted up a tenth among adults 18-49 versus Wednesday’s preliminary ratings.

    8:00PM FOX American Idol (8-10 PM) 4.5 13 16.460

Maybe with less viewership the prospect of getting the best singer to win might be materialized :)

I agree, and also I think that the two hour shows for the whole season is too much. Two hours of mostly mediocre singing the same songs again followed by some judge waffle is too much to take.
