It’s not just Pop Idol. Idol is a franchise and various editions around the world have 4 or 3 judges. The format is pretty much the same everywhere. Same with X Factor.

American Idol started with 3 judges because they couldn’t find the 4th one. But they wanted 4 from the start. And because the original trio had such great chemistry, the producers didn’t think another judge was really necessary. Until the original panel became stale (season 8).

Now, the original panel is history. Considering how bad Tyler-Lopez-Jackson panel was, we can’t say 3-judges panel is better than 4-judges panel by default. It’s all a matter of chemistry. And casting a panel is always a gamble, nowadays an expensive one.

From watching Idol and XF USA, I think the real problem are constant cuts to long commercial breaks that exhaust the viewer more than anything else. But that’s the problem of American TV and nothing can be done about that.

    Interesting tweet:

Joe Adalian ?@TVMoJoeOne reason why Duck beats Idol in A18-34? Young men have bailed on Idol; did a 2.0 in M18-34 (vs. 4.1 W18-34). Duck popular w/ men+women

Yeesh.  Sure glad Adam Lambert didn’t end up being a judge on this Titantic.  The whole buzz would have been how he sunk the show then.  Truth be told, I don’t think it’s the judges fault – just tired and not fresh anymore.

The contestants this year stink! Plain and simple. It’s all about the mix of finding good singers who also have big personalities. Some of this lot only has the former, which makes their singing come off as white noise, because there is no connection to the viewing public.
