Last night’s American Idol was down a tenth compared to the previous week.  I suppose it could be worse. Nashville was a repeat.

FOX was the number one network in adults 18-49 and with total viewers.

On FOX, American Idol earned a 5.4, down a tenth from last week’s 5.5 among adults 18-49.

If it’s adjusted up a point(which is very likely), it will be even with last week, which is good news. I feel like the title is slightly misleading. Last seasons comparable episode was 6.0, so it’s only down 10% from last year(before adjustments).

The 10% year to year drop is in line with what they show had been getting prior to last year.  It’s also in line with the 10% average drop for all broadcast television shows.  I just read a lot of posts about “how low can AI go”, but the truth is that AI’s ratings are falling just like all shows, but AI is still one of the top rated shows.  It topped both the demo ratings and total viewer charts last week, and even if the Big Bang Theory beats it this week in the demo, it will be the only show, aside from the Super Bowl, to do so.

Idol has some amazing talent this season. Hope the good ones make it past Hollywood week

Talent was better last night. Still slightly down. What happens when it’s up against new episodes of Big Bang?

No matter how good the ratings/demo are, if one of the shows that beats you is your direct time-slot competition, that tends to take the shine off the numbers.

We have no idea if it will be adjusted up a point or not. What if it adjusts down? Then what? Based the headline on the information we have NOW.

Hmmm. I wonder what it will be when Person of Interest comes back and Crominal Minds and Modern Family aren’t repeats.

TBBT beat it most of last year, so it wouldn’t be anything new.

On a more positive note, here’s recent review I read about Glee’s improved ratings being attributed to following American Idol on Thursday. Apparently its ratings were much lower last year, when it came after X Factor. So even if AI isn’t getting credit for its own good ratings, at least it’s getting credit for another show’s good ratings!

I don’t think Idol will ever get overwhelmingly positive ratings press again because the media tends to compare its viewership now to the glory days. The show stubbornly retains the perception that it’s unpopular even when its not really. The Voice just enjoys a more positive sheen even though it really doesn’t perform anywhere near as well as Idol.

The big difference is that Idol used to beat everything else on air by millions of viewers, every episode was like the Grammys or sports playoffs type ratings. Now its just a regular hit show that will still end up at or near the top TV series when all is said and done. It will very likely beat all the other singing shows by a comfortable margin. After 12 years that’s pretty great, its still going to take another 3 or 4 years to seriously decline at this rate.

All these numbers are interesting.  But I’m more anxious to see how Idol fares once finals get underway.  That’s the real show to me, not all these heavily edited preliminaries.  I’m an Idol fan and have trouble enduring the early phases.  It’s probably an even greater challenge for casual viewers.

Adjusted up to 5.5 as expected :)

So only down by 8.4% from last year. I’m starting to think it’s possible that we could see a few shows higher than last season. We’ll see.

They’re probably an even greater challenge for casual viewers.

The auditions usually have higher ratings than all of the other episodes, except the finale.  And sometimes even the finale can’t match the ratings for the first episode.  It’s funny when you think about it, on the boards the regular viewers always complain about the audition episodes, but those are the shows that draw the most casual viewers.  I bet that a lot of those viewers tune in mostly for the bad auditions.

From here on out the ratings are going to be dependent on the contestants and the editing.

Tonight Idol’s up against anew episode of Big Bang Theory and the series finale of 30 Rock. This should be interesting. A sizable dip seems almost inevitable.

When American Idol is no longer a top 20 show and no longer has ratings that every network would envy, we can be concerned about ratings.  Every week, the headline is ratings have dipped.  Most shows don’t last a quarter of the time Idol has been on air. It will probably be around for a few more years.
