    A Barry Special Episode
On ”American Idol,” the four finalists are coached by a Gibb brother but don’t hit many high notes

This is gonna be a hard one to write. Not because my beloved LaKisha Jones is almost certain to go home on Wednesday night’s results show à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’ she was nowhere near strong enough tonight to overcome her limited fan base à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’ but rather because with only two performance shows remaining in Idol’s sixth season, I’m completely ambivalent about whom I’m backing to win…….

LaKisha might not be stayin’ alive

The biggest story on “American Idol” Tuesday was Jordin Sparks’ re-emergence as a front-runner.
“She is going to be, I think, one of our greatest female recording artists,” the Bee Gees’ Barry Gibb said after coaching the 17-year-old through “Woman in Love.” Jordin also won over a fan who held up a sign reading “Chicago * Jordin.”

She didn’t necessarily win over the judges, though. While Simon Cowell praised her first song, he found the second “too pageant-y.”

Still, she was good enough to earn a place alongside Melinda Doolittle in the semifinals. Things are less certain for Blake Lewis and LaKisha Jones. After an interesting take on “Stayin’ Alive,” LaKisha’s “Run to Me” left her without a voice and, most likely, out of the competition.

Networks fight to hold advertisers as TV-watching drops off

…Events like “American Idol” on Fox (which is owned by News Corp.) and “Dancing With the Stars” on ABC (owned by The Walt Disney Co.) are doing the most to prop up the industry. Still, in the six weeks after Daylight Saving Time started in early March, prime-time viewership for the four biggest broadcast networks was down to 37.6 million people, from 40.3 million during the same period in 2006, according to Nielsen Media Research…

The most winning ‘Idol’ finalists yet

“American Idol” shifts into yet another phase tonight – a painful phase for die-hard viewers.

We’re down to the final four (three, after tonight’s results show) and this year, more than ever, the eliminations are hard to watch.

This is the first time in “Idol” history that everyone in the top four has a shot at stealing the competition. There hasn’t been this competitive a final slate, with as many wild-card factors and distinct personalities, since … well, ever….

Granted there are a lot of good songs in the Bee Gees canon, but it could have been a falsetto nightmare – a solid hour of all Bee Gees music.

To their credit, however, the Top Four “American Idol” contestants brought their own stylings to the songs and saved us from the potential falsetto fallout….

    Korbi’s Quickie:

    TUESDAY NIGHT HIGHLIGHTS

American Idol: Am I the only fool who feels Simon, Randy and Paula were out of their minds last night? I thought Blake was brilliant and thoroughly enjoyed both his performances, beat boxing and all. His vocals were fantastic, his moves were hot and Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢m even digginà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ that dark hair. Your thoughts?

Being No. 4 still can be fantastic on ‘American Idol’
If the past is any indication, Lakisha should find success

Go fourth and conquer. Experience shows that, even if you don’t finish in the Top 3 on American Idol, you can still score big.

Fort Meade resident Lakisha Jones has made it into the final four. Even if she were to lose as early as tonight, she could still be a winner — if you consider the success that previous fourth-place finishers on the show have experienced…….

    Idolà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ Chatter: I miss Sanjaya

No doubt à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Jive Talkinà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢Ãƒ ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ would have been one of his picks. It’s a year of golden Grammy moments

…But that is not translating into sales. In the first three months of this year, the seven-year CD sales decline got even worse, dropping 20 percent from last year this time.

And even a hit isn’t what it used to be. Recently, “American Idol” runner-up Chris Daughtry landed at No. 1 by selling just 65,000 copies, while the “Dreamgirls” soundtrack managed the same feat with sales of a paltry 60,000. In years past, those figures wouldn’t get an album into the top 30.

Last year, about 800 music stores, including all 89 Tower Records outlets, closed. Meanwhile, it’s reported that 1 billion songs a month are traded on illegal file-sharing networks, fodder for the 100 million iPods Apple has sold…

Singers fall flat on Bee Gees night

How deep is your love for American Idol? Tuesday’s Bee Gees night, coached by songwriter-producer Barry Gibb, was a real endurance test of bad singing. An Idol disaster on par with the caterwauling Gwen Stefani night several weeks ago.

The four remaining finalists did the near-impossible: They took the Gibb brothers’ melody-rich material and rendered it tuneless and boring. No one delivered a knockout performance, not even this season’s two remaining vocal powerhouses, Melinda Doolittle and Jordin Sparks…

    Taking Names

    D.C. stop for busy Jen
If we haven’t heard much from Jennifer Hudson since her big Oscar win, there’s a reason why. The “Dreamgirls” star has been B-U-S-Y, she told the Minneapolis Star-Tribune. Two weeks ago, she filmed her part in “Winged Creatures,” a drama starring fellow Oscar winner Forest Whitaker, and she’s getting ready to write and record with Grammy-winning producers Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis.
“Every day is like: studio, studio, studio,” says Miss Hudson, the one-time “American Idol” castoff who vaulted to stardom as Effie White in “Dreamgirls,” a role that won her a supporting-actress Oscar two months ago.
Although her priority is recording her debut album — due in October on Clive Davis’ J Records — she’s squeezing in a handful of concerts, like tonight’s benefit at the fourth annual Lupus Foundation of America Awards Gala at the Mandarin Oriental Hotel in Southwest. Actor Malcolm-Jamal Warner (Theo Huxtable from “The Cosby Show”) will serve as master of ceremonies for the star-studded event.
Miss Hudson is also planning a concert tour in the fall. “I can’t wait for that,” she told the Star-Tribune.

    Week 9: The official summary

You know the drill: Your own rankings, your picks for best, worst, going home — send ‘em to me. And here’s the return of the official summary:

The songs of the Bee Gees proved a bit more than the women (and one guy) remaining among the American Idol finalists could handle Tuesday.

Blake Lewis fared worst, with pallid performances of You Should Be Dancing and This Is Where I Came In. LaKisha Jones slowed down both Stayinà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ Alive and Run to Me, which worked only on the latter.

Even the unflappable Melinda Doolittle was lethargic on Love You Inside Out, though she recovered on How Can You Mend a Broken Heart.

Best of the night: Jordin Sparks, who paired a pretty Woman in Love with an accomplished To Love Somebody.

Bee Gees night posed a challenge: How deep is your love for “American Idol”?

Tuesday was an off night for most of the four finalists, who each performed two songs. You know it’s going to be a rough night when Melinda Doolittle starts, and Simon Cowell knocks her for not giving a star performance on “Love You Inside Out.” I have a feeling the story would have been different if she had performed later in the show.

Failed American Idol Wannabee Making Waves on Myspace

Perhaps best known as American Idol’s Antonella’s less successful, but equally flirtatious friend, Amanda Coluccio has turned to MySpace to launch her career. The singer who did not make it into the twenty-four, but did make Hollywood week, is striking some provocative poses and slithering through some sexy lyrics in an attempt to get her big break. If you count Myspace friends as the mile markers to success, the former American Idol hopeful has a long road ahead of her.

The single on her Myspace page, “Push and Touch,” has enough pitch correction to make you wonder if there is anything human left on the track. None-the-less it is a catchy track that I have nick-named “Fergie-lite.” At over 11,000 views though, Amanda has only picked up 120 friends. Re post.

Does ‘Idol’ deserve to be voted off?
Some viewers and culture-watchers decry an excess of glitz and a lack of talent on America’s No. 1 show.

Has “American Idol” gotten too glitzy for its own good?

Hauling in old-time superstars like Diana Ross and Tony Bennett each week, juggling formats with an all-star telethon and a surprise, but exploitive, elimination reprieve; padding the schedule with extended broadcasts and packing the audience with celebs and overwrought tearful fans, the show isn’t the amateur hour we fell in love with.

“When I did it, they had two modes: play and stop,” said Justin Guarini, the original “Idol” runner-up in 2002, in a telephone interview. “Now they have a huge orchestra, and a beautiful stage. They get to show a lot of what the contestants can do. I think it’s great.”……

Tuesday Night’s Idol: Will Blake be Stayin’ Alive?

PEOPLE critic Tom Gliatto thinks the beatboxer may be the next to go?

The Bee Gees’s best-known music is so stamped with a particular production sound, it made it difficult for the final four contestants à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’ with their dance-rock beat and the feathery, sometimes chipmonk-y vocals à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’ to stake out compelling new interpretations of the well-known dance tunes.

Barry Gibb, mentoring the performers, several times wondered how songs associated with a male falsetto would work for the women à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’ not to mention the male beatbox style of Blake Lewis.

Gibb was right to wonder. Each singer got two chances to shine but, for me, the high point was Ryan Seacrest joking that Simon Cowell had been dating Judge Judy the past three months……

    It’s Just Beatboxing, People

You know that little twinge you get behind your ears just above your neck when somebody does something so embarrassing that you’re embarrassed for them?

When Bon Jovi guest-starred last week on à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“American Idol,à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ 17-year-old finalist Jordin Sparks implied that the rock legend was someone sheà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢d mainly heard on oldies stations. She talked about how much a fan her mom was, and then went out and had her worst performance of the season.

With that in mind, Barry Gibb week seemed like it would be a nightmare for her. If she couldnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t handle à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢80s rock, how could she possibly do anything with the disco era? Even worse, she and the remaining à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Idolsà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ had to pick two songs…….

On ‘American Idol,’ Here Comes the Real Judge

…Melinda refused to sing some of the lyrics on “How Can You Mend a Broken Heart?” because, she told Gibb, she’s been “very careful not to sing about being a loser on ‘American Idol.’ ” And then she flashed him her golly-gosh eyes. And you didn’t believe me when I said she was “All About Eve”!…

à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“I like Sanjaya because he reminds me of myself,à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ she said. à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Changing his hair, (like) I changed my hair every week. People wanted to see that and people watched to see how our hair was, what we were going to wear, what we were going to sing. Definitely, I give my respect to him.à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬

Paris Paris Paris. I didn’t exactly watch American Idol to see how your hair was or what you were going to wear, but I did want to see (and hear) what you were going to sing. Your voice is fantastic. Your album, though? Eh, not so much.

It occurred to me a few weeks ago that Melinda would be the logical 4th place “shocker” boot a la Daughtry last year. If she’s considered “safe” because she’s always been, someone else might get sympathy votes. This season has been so lackluster, that I’m squarely on team indifference. Wish someone from last year was in this year.

So I guess Melinda and Kiki are the lowest on DI. It would be a shame for Melinda to go but I wouldn’t be surprised. I think she is an awesome singer but a little lacking in the charisma dept. Doesn’t seem to have the fans/buzz that some others do. Even tho I can appreciate her talent, I’m not compelled to vote.

Wow – could the pimping of Jordin be any more obvious?

Still on Team Indifference. I had really hoped to feel something remotely like the anticipation & excitement of last year but it just isn’t there.

  • rher

I hate the word marketable also. A year from now, we will see how marketable Sanjaya, Jordin, and Blake are. 27 million votes is not 27 million people, people. A lot of those votes are from dialers who must wait for their allowance before purchasing cds and such. I think that most will be in the music industry, but perhaps not the big stars that the producers had hoped for. Last year, bought tickets to the tour. This year, nah.

  • jpfan

I actually felt embarrassed watching the Top 4 last night. If they were going to be bad couldn’t they have had more fun. Go out in a blaze of glory guys. Let Clive worry about selling CDs. No matter who wins, they’ll have trouble matching Taylor’s disappointing numbers from last year. Blake outlasting Melinda would be a travesty but since 4th place is the new 1st, it won’t matter much in the end. I looked forward to Season 6 but Season 7 (who cares.)

I never bothered to look before but saw TWOP gave last night’s show an A plus. Maybe if you were drunk…

WOW and O M G !! What did I miss ? Sounds like I missed nada !! All I can say is 15 more days til Taylor’s on.. I love reading these articles, LisaB !! (15 days :happy_tb:!!!!)

  • sexygirl

Wow, you know it’s bad when you finished watching a show and all you think is, I miss Sanjaya.

This all but guarantees that Lakisha goes home next week and TPTB have a totally marketable top two.

It’s really sad when AI keeps tooting that it’s a singing contest at it’s own convinience and someone like Blake goes all the way too to the top or even worst wins just because he is supposedly marketable. I’ll be very upset if Blake stays tonight and Lakisha goes just because people want her gone and not because she deserves too. She was WAY better than Blake. Blake sounded a hot mess on first song and he looked and sounded a complete mess on the second. ..As a matter of fact Sanjaya would have sung staying alive much better than Blake.

Sorry Jersey, you know you’re my girl but plaid just isn’t my print and Blake just isn’t my guy..

  • jersey

LOL, that’s ok sexy, we don’t have to agree all the time!

  • MaryS-NJ

    *Yawn* Go Team Indifference. Zzzzzzzz….

Sorry, where was I? Oh yeah.

Despite my non-voting pledge, I voted for Phil (the underdog) during IGB week a little, and for Melinda last night – a lot – because I feared she would be Daughtry’d. I got one busy signal the whole time. I never had that happen last season… I had to buy a GoPhone so I could text for Taylor because the landlines were totally jammed.

That said, I understand why some folks think Melinda’s boringly expert. I still think she deserves to be in the finale with Blake, over Jordin. I suspect, however, that the “damning with faint praise” that she has received across the board since the finals will send her home prematurely. I will not surprised if she gets the shocking boot tonight. I will be even more indifferent if that happens.

As for Blake, he gets an A for trying something different. I don’t always enjoy his experimentation, but I do always find him interesting. I didn’t like his last song choice and agree with Simon that it was tuneless but that was not Blake’s fault. I think he’s safe as houses with TEAM PLAID backing him up.

Lakisha gets VFTW and those who vote for the underdog. If anyone’s the spoiler, it’s her. I think Melinda has been more consistent than Lakisha, but she’s been more consistent than Jordin. She’s too much the church singer, IMO, but your milage may vary.

Jordin did…okay. Not great, not the best EVAH – not even the best teenager on the show ever. The OTT pimping is insane and really making me resentful because I don’t think she’s all that. I don’t even think she’s half that. She’s probably a shoe-in for the F2.

    So – meh.

  • jersey

Mary – I got your email. I’m getting 6 tix. Hopefully there is no limit. 2 for you, 4 for me. My son, sister-in-law and nephew are all coming with me. My sis-in-law lives 10 mins from the venue. I got your message that sexy is getting her own ticket. Right Sexy?

  • Stefunny

My-oh-my…appearing on Idol *really* helps your sales! Bon Jovi’s singles went through the roof last week–wow!

And I totally agree that Melinda most likely will be Daughtry’d tonight. I also voted for her and nary a busy signal was had. ‘Course my hubby voted for Blake too and didn’t get busy signals for him either.

Maybe it was the 2 song thing? Whatever….I was disappointed. I do agree with a blogger (?) linked earlier that if Melinda had gone later in the pack…say after Blake…she would’ve been given higher marks. And if Jordin had gone first, the pimping wouldn’t have been so in-your-face obvious.

  • Former_AI_Junkie

As a matter of fact Sanjaya would have sung staying alive much better than Blake.

Well, that’s because Blake isn’t a better singer than Sanjaya. The producers made Sanjaya to be “OMG the worst singer on AI EVER”. Chris R was actually worse than him.

  • RollTide

As a matter of fact Sanjaya would have sung staying alive much better than Blake.

Blake didn’t sing Staying Alive. Blake could sing circles around Sanjaya. So can Lakisha, who actually sang Staying Alive.

  • radname

I think Jordin was the only one that was good on both songs, she won’t get the credit for that she’ll just get the “BUT SHE WENT LAST!! FAVOURITISM! FAVOURITISM!!”

  • radname

lol at that TMZ article, Over It went up to 21 on mediabase, and sold over 300k in digital sales. Hardly a dissapointment. It surpassed what i wanted it to do as a first single

Well, I’ve taken the time to read what people have said, and while people are bothered by her ownership of the pimp spot, most are commenting on her performance. So they are giving her credit for her performances. Full credit to my fellow posters for being better than some predict they would be.

BTW I thought Jordin was pretty good on her first song, but she was off-key and shouty on the second song (I agreed with the judges comments on the second song). Meanwhile, Melinda may have lacked a spark on her first song, but sang both beautifully.

  • Kirsten

Ouch at Kimberley’s numbers. I had hoped she would do better.

  • FOTIAI

LOL sarahinwv! And I totally agree, Sanjaya could have sung either one of Blake’s songs better than he did – HE SUCKED – he had to beatbox, even he knows he can’t sing Barry Gibb! It was painful to listen to – and I’m sorry, he looks like a complete DORK – I do not see the attraction that this Team Plaid seems to see!

I too am a Jordin fan from the get-go, and I have to say that she did the best in the vocal department last night – BAR NONE – the second song was a little rough, but it’s also the first time they’ve had to do that, and the show seemed very rushed last night, trying to fit everything in. And yes, Melinda can sing – but SO WHAT, she is SOOOOO boring, and now instead of the confused “who me” look, we get that goofy smile and a tilt of the head – I completely understood what Paula was trying to say to Melinda – LIVEN UP A LITTLE – every song sounds the same to me, and if she ends up in the finals – against anyone else, she SHOULD lose – techinically good singing isn’t enough to be on top.

Was anyone trying to stay alive?
    American Idol LaKisha watch

…The star of the night was Jordin Sparks. She made two good song choices – the Bee Gees’ “To Love Somebody” and Barbara Streisand’s “Woman in Love,” proof again that she has an uncanny talent for picking songs that are both dramatic and able to show off her dynamic range, especially the strong high end of her voice. Gibb predicted she would be “one of our greatest female recording artists,” and at this late stage, she just could be this year’s “American Idol.”

Did you notice that her phone number was posted during both of her performances? I don’t remember the others getting that luxury. Maybe the producers are trying to influence the vote….

    Blake Lewis Must Be Stopped

…I’ve never trusted Blake. From the beginning his beat boxing seemed like a cheap ploy, the Morrissey sound second-rate mod, the “seductive” grin on his face barely rising to the level of bad porn. Then came his interview with People magazine where he complained about being “sexually frustrated” and where he said with a sleazy wink, “A tour could be fun” – a transparent call for tweenaged groupies.

Seeing Blake last night in his Nehru jacket, I saw an aspiring Kurtz-like cult leader. He doesn’t want to be an American Idol. He’d be much happier as the Idol of his own jungle kingdom (Laos?), ruling over an army of the young and defenseless, far beyond the reach of American law and values. Sound the Amber Alert now. Blake’s on the loose…

American Idol: Jordin Sparks still favorite to win

After the American Idol Final Four performance last night, today will be the day to count the votes and find out who will be eliminated.

The people have spoken today. All over the Internet you will find plenty of disappointed folks. Many believe that last night’s American Idol contenders made their worst performances ever. Or it could be that the songs of Barry Gibb just weren’t their cup of tea? Either way, we stopped by the online betting website Bodog to see if there was a movement at the American Idol betting odds.

And yes, the bad songs we heard last night just made Jordin Sparks (singing à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“To Love Somebodyà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ and à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Woman in Loveà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ) odds to win the Idol even better – 10/11. Jordin has been more steady in her performace from the very beginning of the American Idol, and the “no-kiss” singing by LaKisha Jones yesterday may cost her the chance to continue tonight to the semifinals. Lakisha Jones performed the songs à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Stayinà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ Aliveà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ and à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Run to Meà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ and her betting odds continue to be the worst – 14/1…..

My dad last night asked why they don’t give Jordin the crown because there’s no competition left. And that she was by and far the best (this is after I made him go to the store to buy me ice cream because i’ll admit i have an unhealthy obsession with ice cream.) So if Jordin gets eliminated tonight, don’t be surprised.

  • FOTIAI

radname – those of us that enjoyed Studio 60 stopped watching NBC on Monday nights – the Black Donnelys never had a chance!
NBC needs to stop messing with good shows – top 20 doesn’t mean everything if a show has a strong, devoted following that still blows anything on UPN or WB or even oldies CBS out of the water!

Is Jordin the “curly headed” one that was predicted to win? I always thought that was Chris S. With an idol performance next week, Elliott should sell 200K by end of the month. Having a single on the Top 40 charts may push the number higher. Re: Kim Locke – Idol shelf life isn’t very long in a dismal music market.

‘Idol’ Recap: Melinda’s Worst Is Still The Best; Blake Needs To Think Outside The Beatbox
Randy blasts Blake and Simon gives Jordin some tough love, but LaKisha is likely to leave.

“American Idol” has a lot in common with this week’s guest mentor, Barry Gibb. First, they both originated in England. Second, they’ve each taken part in truly reprehensible movie musicals. (Here’s a double feature from hell: “Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band” and “From Justin to Kelly” Third? The chest hair.

They also have less-talented, less-interesting and less-famous brothers (Robin Gibb, I’d like you to meet “So You Think You Can Dance.”) But most importantly, they’ve both been responsible for some of the biggest hits of their day. I’m shocked that “Idol” hasn’t boogied to the Brothers Gibb before tonight….

Why should Lakisha go and Blake stay again? Someone pleas clue me in. Did Lakisha sing off-key last night? Was her voice so high that even dogs were annoyed last night? Did Simon stop short of calling her a hot mess last night on her second song? Or, has it become quite apparent that TPTB on AI no longer want this black diva around and is panning every song she sings. Mean while, a Jamiroquia reject gets praises for being “ORIGINAL” when all he is doing is hide his inability to sing by using his vocals to beat-box and record scartch. Maybe he should learn to SING first and leave all those other vocal acrobats for when he actually master the art of SINGING. He is so full of himself that he actually feels he needs to beat-box and scratch every song. Even at the most inappropriate times. Blake was so beyond arrogant last night. I bet he really thought it was the judges who had a problem hearing how extremely good he was..

Sorry all you team-plaid fans but IMO, Blake stay two many weeks to long. American really did vote off all the REAL male talent.

Last night was a bit rough for everyone. I was so geeked for the Bee Gees theme and it sucked large. I thought Blake did well on the second song. I’m annoyed at Simon for generalizing about his demographic. He appeals across age and gender.

The Jamiroquai/Blake comparison comes to play because he did Virtual Insanity in the top 24. I thought he did a great job with that one. I don’t think he’s a Jamiroquai rip-off, but that’s just me.

sarahinwv………….don’t forget the Leno show for TH on the 14th.

Interesting fact on the weekly ratings for the networks. The only thng keeping Fox in the game, apparently, is AI. They average 10 million viewers per hour. (how the heck do they count these things?) As a matter of fact, according to the article, the trend for TV is less and less viewers all the time. No wonder the networks are in a tizzy. The viewers have taken over their own entertainment with the advent of the internet. If it wasn’t for ad money on the shows, the networks would fold. They are going to have to be really creative now. I am thinking that the reason you see so many older fans at the AI concerts, is that the viewer skews older on the main.

Tuesday’s Idol: What You Didn’t See

…Beat It: Blake Lewis, a fan favorite, had an off night and the judges à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’ especially Simon and Randy Jackson à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’ were quick to scold the very thing they once praised: Randy told Blake, an average vocalist with outstanding beat box skills, that a little beat boxing goes a long way. During the show’s final video recap, Blake looked dejected and could barely eke out a smile for fans in the audience….

I like everybody left. I really do. That said, Blake sucked donkey balls last night. He was awful. There is no way he should win a singing competition, he’s just too limited of a vocalist. He’ll make a great album, but he does not deserve to win.

I know everyone has it out for Kiki, but I didn’t dislike her so much yesterday. I am so sick of the judges jumping all over her even when she really is no better or worse than anyone else. If y’all want Jordin to win that bad then just give her the crown already and don’t make us sit through the next few weeks.

Melinda was good, but I hate that fact that may not be enough to win anymore. At this point she’s competing with herself, and if she doesn’t find a way to outdo her own best performances she’s going home.

‘IDOL’ Banter: A Bee Gees bust
The Times’ pop music critics’ take on “American Idol”

The real loser on tonight’s show? Barry Gibb……

……More troubling, all these young performers seem to have ditched music school the day they talked about the importance of sonic and rhythmic space. Chinese philosopher Lao Tse wrote in the “Tao Te Ching” that “Profit comes from what exists; usefulness from what does not.” Were he an “Idol” judge, he might sagely advise: “A good singer knows when to sing; the great singer knows when not to.”

Celebrity hangers-on, it’s time to get lost
The entourage is becoming passà ©. Once a symbol of star power, it’s now often seen as a sign of desperation.

…But a shift in perception seems to be taking place. Big entourages are now widely seen as the sign of a neophyte, a has-been or a wannabe. “American Idol” reject Sanjaya Malakar, for instance, prompted eye rolls from gossip bloggers when he showed up at Paramount Pictures recently with an entourage of stylists and agents in tow. When Britney Spears arrives at a club with half a dozen “friends,” she warrants more pity than envy. The new code dictates that bona fide success doesn’t demand a traveling chorus.

“There are two types of celebrities,” said Harvey Levin, managing editor of the celebrity watching Internet site TMZ.com. “There are the Posh Spice types that want everybody around them to think it must be the president. Then there are the Tom Hanks types who just would like to blend, and they don’t make a fuss. The smart celebrities are the ones who realize that a true sign of stardom is somebody who doesn’t have to act like a star.”…

This is not really Idol related, although the idols might have experienced some problems from all the smoke yesterday. We had a major fire going in Griffith Park.
Anyone else having a heat wave? We broke 14 records yesterday that were heat related. It was 97 in downtown L.A. at noon yesterday and projected 90 today. They do have the fire under control now, but it threatened our zoo, the Griffith Observatory, the Greek Theatre, riding stables and many other landmarks.

  • emeralgem

OT.. Mad..It hit 90 here yesterday which is quite unusual for this time of year…We also had several days last week when the temps got into the 90′s.. Not too many fires in this area, which is also surprising since everything is so dry.. We NEED rain..
Hope, they got the animals to safety.. We lost many animals in our zoo last year due to a fire…
Also, hope the damage wasn’t too extensive and no lives were lost in your area..

Mean while, a Jamiroquia reject gets praises for being à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“ORIGINALà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ when all he is doing is hide his inability to sing by using his vocals to beat-box and record scartch.

OK, I admit Blake’s first song was not that good. But none of them had 2 good peformances last night. Not a single one. I thought he did great on his second song. His voice sounded very nice. And I totally don’t get that TPTB are panning all of Lakisha’s songs. Have we already forgotten the major praise she got last week? That is what saved her. She is boring to me. She stomps out songs that sound exactly the same every week. She *never* listens to the advice of people who have actually had success in the music business. You wanna talk about arrogant? Apparently she thinks she knows better than every single mentor that’s come on. And I’m not sure how you got that Blake looked arrogant, and that he thought the judges had a problem. To me, he looks very disappointed and hurt every time the judges say something bad about him. Did you read that People article from someone who was there? They said he could barely eek out a smile. Doesn’t sound like some arrogant full of himself guy in my opinion.

    Go Team Plaid! :)

    Akon gets Gwen in trouble

Major sponsor pulls out of Stefanià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s tour thanks to the Senegalese starà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ¦

Gwen Stefanià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s US tour is in doubt after a telecoms company objected to Akon supporting the Sweet Escape singer.

A video of Akon vigorously dry-humping a lady on stage in Trinidad has appeared on the net. Some have alleged the girl is only 14 years old.

Now American phone company Verizon has pulled ità ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s sponsorship of Gwen Stefanià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s tour because of the incident. Reports suggest this could lose the star a cool $3 Million!

On the Scene: An ‘Idol’ virgin attends his first taping

…I may not watch Idol, but I do work at EW, so I have a general idea of whatà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s going on. I know people love Melinda à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’ sheà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s “the best singer thatà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s ever been on Idol,” I’m told, and with her first number I see that sheà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s a great singer, but she doesnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t take me to the emotional places that Kelly Clarkson did in season 1, the only season of Idol Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ve ever watched.

Next up: Blake. When I see his hair and his Tiffany-circa-1987 head moves, I just want this guy to break into some ’80s British synth pop, like Erasure. But tonight ità ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s all Barry Gibb. And from Blakeà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s performance of “You Should Be Dancing,” I get why he couldnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t hear Debbie when she was shouting at him: his head must be a crowded, crowded place à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’ all those beat, bop, doobie-doos. Whew! Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢m tired just listening to him. This must be what it was like to see Bobby McFerrin live early in his career. American Idol: Bee Gees fever fizzles

When I was 11, I was a crazy, à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Tiger Beatà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ buying Andy Gibb lover. This, of course, translated into a love of his brothers, the Bee Gees.

Over the course of my lifetime, I think I have purchased just about every Bee Gees album released, some on vinyl, cassette and CD, so Tuesday night promised to be a special evening for me. Unfortunately for the Idols, their only success of the evening was in proving how good Barry, Maurice and Robin Gibb must have been to write and perform their classic tunes, as the top 4 did not impress. With an amazing number of Bee Gee tunes to choose from, song choice was strangely the downfall of the contestants. They each got to choose and perform two songs, but left little to love about the evening – and thatà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s no jive talkinà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢.

Alright, so last night wasn’t that great. It wasn’t horrible, but it wasn’t great. I think the fact that there are 3 diva’s who basically sing in the same style adds to the boringness factor. Imagine if we had the final 4 that I originally hoped and prayed for: Gina, Chris R, Jordin/Melinda (I can’t decided), and Blake. The show would be way better with the variety. Plus, Chris would have killed it, he’s the only one really capable of singing their songs.
I love Blake, and he did OK last night. I think Simon definitely revved up the fanbase and I have a feeling he’ll be sticking around for at least one more week. I hope (can you imagine how boring a lakishajordinmelinda final 3 would be? ugh.) I don’t think he used the beatboxing that much last night but I guess they have to have something to say about him since this is usually the point where the judges drop all the substance and start talking bullshit.
Jordin sang a great song, but she didn’t impress me. Melinda didn’t impress either. And Kiki, whatever, I love you girl but please go home.
Also, there was much material to fuel my love/hate relationship with Paula’s sudden coherence. She had some off moments but I seriously can say, with a straight face, that she’s pretty much the most important judge on the panel this season.
Also, last night in chat I made a comment about how I would love to see a reality show of just the judges and Ryan because I find them all utterly hilarious together. And this morning I recieved an e-mail from a friend who sent me this.
    Paula’s new reality show!
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=05snJ0HmDj0
    holy shit!
I guess one out of 4 isn’t too bad. And she’s the most interesting one. I will be glued to my television and will not miss an episode of that show. I forsee nothing but hilarity. Can’t wait.

In all likelihood, he spent the remainder of last night soaking his pillow with hot emo tears, listening to à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Please, Please, Please Let Me Get What I Want,à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ and staring somberly at a photo of his ousted BFF, Chris Richardson à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’ only taking a break from moping to tear out a casting call ad for the touring production of Rent.

Ditto AFan. Thanks for the Paula link, loved it.

On the gossip report this morning on the radio there was a segment devoted to Kelly C. They basically said Clive wanted to shelf the album, and he was quoted as saying I just don’t get it. Apparently, Kelly was really pissed especially because she “wrote”/co-wrote all the songs, anyway she threw down with Clive and got her way, with Clive basically saying if it fails, it’s on you, if it succeeds it’s on me. Gotta love evil ODL.

Oh what a sweet pill that would be to take, eh? My vote would be for something like Gonna Move, The Maze or Heaven Knows – or if the God’s are really looking down, an original song, i.e., Soul Thing or The Deal. I know, I’m dreaming – he’ll prolly do JTFTW, but ya never know!

with Clive basically saying if it fails, ità ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s on you, if it succeeds ità ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s on me. Gotta love evil ODL.

    LOL! totally.
I’m happy for Kelly. And I actually really love her new single. It’s interesting.
Simon on Leno? He’ll probably sing “Just to Feel that Gay” :grin2_ee:
I know, I’m a child, leave me alone
Also, I was rewatching that episode where Heather Cox got voted off and Paula and Simon were acting crazy. One of my favorite Ryan moments ever. Does anyone remember this quote?
“This is one of the most intense moments, in their lives, and the two of you are making culinary jokes”
    Gotta love him.

  • Paula

griz — I hope Taylor doesn’t sing JTFTW. He’s sung it enough, and public needs to see what else he can do — hopefully whatever will be his next single or one of his originals.

Disagree with the first part, agree with the second part. I don’t know how you can pick a group thats famous for singing in falsetto who sings higher than all of the females this season. I couldn’t think of one person that would have sounded good with a BeeGees theme

  • Little Boy Blue

Also, I called Pala to compliment them and asked about the big screen and if there was any vid available and they said it was a live feed.

Well, regarding Pala… here’s something for Soul Patrol and Interested Parties….

Someone took a video of Taylor’s performance of GEORGIA ( the second time he sang it on tour ) at the Pala Casino ( ignore the screaming ).

Makes me wonder why he never performed it at American Idol. This version was short but great !

    See here :

Paula…I agree.. radname.. maybe if the mic stand hit one of the fellas in the n-ts.. then there’s your BeeGees theme !

MJ was right on when she said that the group of 4 should have left the disco music out of the performances and stick to their earlier tunes ( just a few years out of the British Invasion).

TO LOVE SOMEBODY was one of those.

Songs like I STARTED A JOKE, MASSACHUSETTS, FIRST OF MAY, were great songs.

Of course, seeing Blake Lewis’ limited range and his propensity to rhythmitize every song he sings with techno beats, I’m not sure if he could’ve done justice to anyone of these tunes.

  • griz

Kim Lockeà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s single à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’ CHANGE is #11 or #12 on the top AC airplay list. Looks like it ainà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t translating to album sales at all.

Another example that hits on the AC charts do not translate as well for album sales as hits on the Top 40 stations. It’s just a fact of life, unfortunately.

  • radname

I think these contestants, like contestants before them on theme nights tend to choose songs that a lot of people know simply because they know it. Which is why a lot of the more popular disco-era songs were sung, i’m not that familiar with the BeeGees and recognized atleast 50% of the songs

  • Former_AI_Junkie

    à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Just to Feel that Gayà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬

Funny.. mine is “Just to Fill that Tay”

Oh heck no. Releasing and/or performing another ballad on live TV is just so not the way to go. He needs to do something lively and up the energy level of the room, not suck all of the life out of it.

I remember last yearà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s final four night (Elvis Week) and it was great. I think BeeGee music was a terrible choice. BTWà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ¦Barry looked/sounded- wow- old.

I loved Elvis night. And, the group medley on results night is still one of my all time favorite AI moments. I thought they were great.

I feel a little bit differently about Bee Gee’s night than some of you do. I don’t blame the theme for the lackluster performances, I blame the contestants. They had a catalogue of over 600 songs to choose from. Many of those songs have been performed very well by others without using any falsetto.

So to me, the contestants all failed by varying degrees in both song choice and execution. I’ve seen many a performer take a song completely outside of their normal comfort zone and turn it into magic. I’ve even seen it on this very show. So, nope. There was a whole lot of mediocrity last night and it sure as heck wasn’t the fault of the Gibb brothers.

I really hope Taylor does not do Runaround or JTFTW. He’ll might very well do whatever he does on Leno next week, and he’s already done both of those on Leno already. I’m hoping for Heaven Knows, as it’s fun & upbeat, any of his originals, or The Right Place. When he does The Right Place live, it does not stay a ballad. Towards the end he really pumps it much like he did with “Try a Little Tenderness” last year. It would bring the house down. Re: Georgia – if I recall, I think it was an interview Taylor did w/ Gray, he didn’t do Georgia on AI as it never fit into any of the theme weeks. He wanted to do it but the opportunity didn’t come up. Same w/ Night Moves.

  • SpenserJ

    Thanks LBB!!

I wonder what theyà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ll do tomorrow on a Bee Gees Medley (if any).

Oh there better be. And, it actually better be tonight, not tomorrow lol. Actually LBB, I’m pretty sure that in that completely incoherent USA Today article there was a mention of rehearsing a group song. But, since the article was written in Sanskrit – I’m not 100% sure.

  • radname

He could have done Georgia during the top 24 rounds, and top 3 night.
As for his performance, it’ll be like his interviews. Just because you sit there and watch all his performances and read all the interviews doesn’t mean the majority of the public has, that’s why with his performance, as with interviews it will be new.

  • radname

I loved the Elvis melody, i didn’t really perfer the previous night. The best vocal was Elliott and I didn’t even enjoy him that much.

  • pj

Spense, you are so right. Last night’s suckage had nothing to do with the Bee Gees.

Steveo, cute pics. Thanks for sharing. :)

If the USA today article is correct, tonight’s group is supposed to be a repeat of “How Deep is Your Love” only with the girls and Blake instead of Sligh, Rudy and Tom Lowe and Blake. I wish it were the original fab four.

  • sarahinwv

radname… hey, How ’bout Ace doing a BEE GEE song? Huh? huh?… I bet he wouldn’t do that bad. :neutral_wp:

  • http://www.idolicious.com Kat

He needs to do something lively and up the energy level of the room, not suck all of the life out of it.

Didn’t Carrie do a medley of some her songs on the AI finale? I think it would be lovely if Taylor started with TRP, maybe segued into JTFTW, and then ended with The Runaround or Heaven Knows.

Either way, as much as I love my Dancing Monkey Taylor(tm), it would be nice if the public were exposed to his slower, gritter side. Seems like a lot of people want to hear it (even critical reviewers at his concerts). But meh.

BTW, I just wired my parents house for wireless internet, so now I don’t have to use the computer in my brother’s room where it constantly smells like old gym socks. :-) Oh, being home has its downsides, all right.

  • radname

Ace to me had a shakey falsetto at the best of times. I don’t really enjoy the tone of his voice it sounds really nasally/whiney to me. He’s nice to look at, and seems like a really nice guy but I don’t enjoy him that much as a singer.

  • eyin

Didnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t Carrie do a medley of some her songs on the AI finale?

Not really. If I remember correctly, she did “I Made It Through the Rain” with the finalists as an opening, and then a solo DFTRM later. That was it.

  • NOLA

    LBB, great toy, thanks much!
Now if I can find a free mp4 to mp3 converter, I will be a happy camper!

Top 3 he wanted to do “Try a Little Tenderness” because it was taken away from him on Love Songs night. Don’t know why he didn’t do Georgia early on, unless he thought he’d have a chance to do it later. Still, he chose great songs for the most part. I hope they all wear SNF disco outfits for the group sing tonight.

  • SpenserJ

Not really. If I remember correctly, she did à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“I Made It Through the Rainà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ with the finalists as an opening, and then a solo DFTRM later. That was it.

Now I remember, she started singing, and for some reason the HD channel started replaying the beginning of the show. So I missed it.

Like tinawina, I like everyone left over. I don’t like how the judges excessively pimp Jordin, but that’s not HER fault, and until she starts giving interviews where she disses her fellow contestants and makes fun of the guest mentors, I doubt I’ll have any beef with her. That being said, her first performance was great, while her second was pretty awful, and I’m glad the judges recognized it. Blake? Needs to go after last night. It was just terrible. LaKisha and Melinda are both great. I prefer Melinda over LaKisha because IMO she makes more interesting song choices and is a bit more nuanced, but either of them would make a great winner.

  • AFan

The worst thing about Ace’s falsetto aside from the nasal quality at times was the horrendous, smarmy, creepy faces he made during it. I sometimes felt violated after his performaces. It made me want to just sit in my shower and scrub myself with soap while weeping.

  • pj

I thought Ace doing Butterflies was tres ballsy after Sway just got kicked off for doing a whole song in false. In the battle of the falsettos, I’ll pick Ace’s Butterflies over the carp that Sway presented.

I thought Ace doing Butterflies was tres ballsy after Sway just got kicked off for doing a whole song in false.

Since we are into falsettos…. Here are some of the great male falsettos of the 20th century :

    Barry Gibb

    Smokey Robinson

    Russell Thompkins of the Stylistics

Phil Bailey of Earth, Wind and Fire ( that’s him doing Fantasy and Reasons — what Sway Penala was trying to duplicate ).

George Mcrae ( he’s the one who sang Rock You Baby ).

Lead Singer of Tavares ( can’t remember his name )

I would have added Neil Sedaka to the mix — except he isn’t singing falsetto. He has a naturally high voice.

  • http://myspace.com/girlgeek mj

Don’t forget the Brian Wilson of the Beach Boys.

This was one of Ace Young’s best falsetto ( that was close to the end of the song ) :

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5uNewzcxLfE

Randy loved the falsetto and called it Ace’s money.

    Simon called the performance “charming”.

Which just shows you how song choice affects your performance… choose a great song like this one Ace did and you’re in the money.

Unfortunately that was his last week ( Kellie Pickler should have been kicked out that week but survived for another week ).

Everyone forgets Roger Hodgson from SuperTramp…..sigh, I love SuperTramp….double sigh

  • griz

Disco music was great! I loved every stickin’ second of it – provided it was sung by people who knew how to boogie – no denying the primo talent of the Bee Gees (the SNL soundtrack it still, I believe, the best selling movie soundtrack ever), Donna Summer, Tavares, The Tramps, Gloria Gaynor, KC and the Sunshine Band and a host of others.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7cPIT_T3mYU

I can do without the attire tho, which would include:

    Polester bell bottom pants
    Mondo high platform shoes
Megga chains around the neck for the men
LOUDLY designed polyester dress shirts for men
High wasted polyester pants for women

oh yea, and the spinning disco light ball – GOTTA have that!

LBB, what are you like our Music History of the 21st century 101 teacher? I can go to wikipedia and post all that crap too.
On a different note, I just saw this Clay Aiken quote posted at perezhilton.com

“You take a look at something like Idol Gives Back, and you realize that the main piece of information we got is that people are hungry in Africa, but we didn’t find out why they are hungry in Africa and we didn’t find out where in Africa they are hungry, nor did we find out the major causes. Without the education about what’s going on in the country, we’re doing no service except for perpetuating that same stereotype that Africa, or any other country in the world, is lesser than the U.S., and we’re in the role that we have to give to them.”

I’m sorry, am I missing something here – wasn’t Idol Gives Back also for people in the U.S.? I think Clay is just jealous that he wasn’t asked to do anything for AI Gives Back – I mean honestly, who doesn’t know about the plight in Africa – and where in Africa it happens – and what the major issues are? Clay is making it seem that AI watchers are too stupid to care – I also belive that during the show, Ryan specifically mentioned that going to AI’s website would give you an idea of where the monies were going and for what…I guess that’s why I NEVER liked Clay – and now, I have even more disdain for him.

LOL on LBB comment by the way!

Either way, as much as I love my Dancing Monkey Taylor(tm), it would be nice if the public were exposed to his slower, gritter side. Seems like a lot of people want to hear it (even critical reviewers at his concerts). But meh.

But see, “America” that watches American Idol seems to long for Dancing Monkey Taylor(TM) and frankly, I think a dose of Taylor monkey dancing would be a good thing. Now that said, I like all flavors of Taylor so I’m good no matter what he sings. I would prefer Heaven Knows to JTFTW for that case because I think it will be ballad-heavy as the finale usually is. If they want slow and soulful Taylor, then yeah, The Right Place.

That Clay quote was dead on!

AFan – with the performances on AI6 being SO dead this year – nobody in the top 12 had any real professional presence on stage, a dose of Taylor, who is a master on stage, would be a great moment at the finale this year – especially because this will be his first time back and remind this audience why he so overwhelming won the title last year. Gut tells me he’ll get quite the hero’s treatment reaction from the audience (both in studio and at home)- considering the abysmal treatment he got from the show this year (don’t think it hasn’t gone unnoticed by a lot of people).

I think this week was Blakes bad week, which is good for him because heà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s getting both Blake fans and Chris fan votes so he wonà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t be going home tonight.

Blake was bad almost every week. He got away with it because he managed to convince people that he was fresh and original. And with all the Sanjaya can’t sing mantra, along with Chris’s nasally singing going downhill fast , the pimping went to Blake. They sure nuff was not going to give the pimping spot to Phil..

FYI, just because we Taylor fans have heard Taylor singing JTFTW a million times in concerts and whereever else, does not mean the majority of America has… There is something to be said for living in a bubble..LOL

If he does release another single it should be an uptempo song that will offset the ballad. My vote goes for GMT. Ever since I’ve heard Maroon 5 new single, I feel that song might just have a chance on the radio.

Perhaps the fact that he hasn’t said a peep all day is also a bad sign. I would imagine they’d be thrown into a bit of a tizzy over it if she did get voted off. There would be lots of backstage scrambling, meetings to discuss how to spin this unexpected turn of events, etc.

    Then again, maybe not.

Okay, I watched Kelly C. this morning or should I say Ms. Kely C because she is the Princes of AI. I have to ask, did she forget how to sing or has she become so big that she really don’t care anymore. My, that performance was intersting..It was not a bad performance but I would have never felt that she won a singing contest if I did not know it for myself.. She has resorted to screaming all of her songs. No wonder Clive is having problems with her new cd. Here’s hoping Ms C. does not let all this instant fame get to her and let her ego right a check she is not willing to cash..

LBB, why not. Do you have a problem with Taylor’s dancing? After all, that is one of the many things about him, like or hate it, that attracted people to him.. Plus, he is already doing it in concert..

Blake was bad almost every week. He got away with it because he managed to convince people that he was fresh and original. And with all the Sanjaya canà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t sing mantra, along with Chrisà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s nasally singing going downhill fast , the pimping went to Blake. They sure nuff was not going to give the pimping spot to Phil..

Phil had some terrible performances in the beginning that didn’t lead to him expanding his fan base early enough. He didn’t excite the studio audience at all. Why would they pimp him? He improved, I admit, and I wish him well. I hope he does well in the country market.

Blake has been consistently good every week. In fact, I don’t even think he was terrible this week. I enjoyed his second performance. It was not a good week for him, but not terrible.

Thankfully, DialIdol has him on top, so I’m hopeful he will get his hometown visit and be around for another week to thrill me and tortue you. :tongue3_tb: I think his fanbase is energized.

And as much as I enjoyed Sanjaya’s run (and even voted for him), to compare him as an artist to Blake… heh.

  • emeralgem

What the hell happened to his mouth. He looks normal here and last night his mouth was frozen and he had buck teeth. I canà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t for the life of me understand why people pay to have that done to their face. Weird.

    Ken Warwick’s Interview:

    Wednesday, May 9, 2007
Producer Says Genre Didn’t Suit LaKisha

In an interview with TV Week, Ken Warwick, the show’s executive producer, says that the disco genre didn’t really suit LaKisha. He said that the different themes are designed to see how good and versatile the contestants really are, and while he had high praise for Jordin and Melinda’s ability to sing different musical styles, he seemed to suggest that LaKisha’s performances last night were a bit of a disappointment.

In addition, Warwick thought Blake did not make good song choices — instead of the little known second song that he sang, Warwick thought he should have instead chosen “Jive Talking.”

Warwick had no comment on whether or not the results will be surprising this evening, but based on his comments, it seemed clear he thought LaKisha was the weakest of the night.

I was afraid that she was going to make an album of this type. My fears were realized.

We all ( at least most of us including the judges ) fell in love with her because she reminded us of a young Billie Holiday, as in this :

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qbmmDENGcGo

Paula said after that performance — “If you made an album in this genre, it will blow up”… who knows if this would come true if she tried ? I would have been one of the first to buy an album filled with those kinds of songs performed by Paris.

Unfortunately, songs like these won’t sell tons, so she is forced to do crap like this. If Kat is forced to do it, she has to do it ( shaking my head in sorrow ).

You know, I kinda always knew that Paris was going to make the type of album she did. Although she performed the jazz songs brilliantly on Idol I always knew that she was more into current r&b. Especially hearing about all the stuff she was doing on tour.
I’m not disapointed in her because I think this is the kind of music she wants to make. It is slightly upsetting that someone with such an amazing talent in Jazz standards doesn’t really want to sing that style, but I’m glad she’s going the way she wanted.

On the same night that top-rated television show American Idol concluded a history-making two-part special, raising (at last count) more than $60 million for charitable causes, one-time American Idol finalist and successful recording star Clay Aiken received the Children’s Advocacy Award from the National Center for Learning Disabilities, held at the Marriott Marquis. Aiken was honored for his tireless work on behalf of children’s causes.

I’m with those who can’t wait to see Taylor on the finale hopefully singing HEAVEN KNOWS but would also love him to do a second song THE RIGHT PLACE- I don’t guess he could work the two together if there is only time for one. Probably not- oh well! Although there is talent this year (primarily Melinda and Lakisha IMO) the show is very boring compared to season 5 and for me that is because of Taylor’s charisma and performing abilities. These people can sing( better than Taylor) but I don’t feel it like with Taylor. I guess that’s why they say different strokes for different folks but I think those fans who love Taylor are in it for the long haul as compared to some of the other more current marketable types. Maybe I am wrong but it seems like Taylor has fans similiar to Clay’s as far as being loyal and supportive.

  • SpenserJ

MJ, many thanks for transcribing the Sanskrit :)

Okay, I can’t believe I’m about to do this, but:

Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢m sorry, am I missing something here – wasnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t Idol Gives Back also for people in the U.S.? I think Clay is just jealous that he wasnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t asked to do anything for AI Gives Back – I mean honestly, who doesnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t know about the plight in Africa – and where in Africa it happens – and what the major issues are? Clay is making it seem that AI watchers are too stupid to care – I also belive that during the show, Ryan specifically mentioned that going to AIà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s website would give you an idea of where the monies were going and for whatà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ¦I guess thatà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s why I NEVER liked Clay – and now, I have even more disdain for him.

See, I completely disagree with this. Clay’s quote is very clear in that he’s pointing out that the show had a lack of backup information about the problems. I don’t think he in any way was implying anything about the audience – since he didn’t mention them at all.

I also don’t believe that all that many Americans truly do know the details of the fight against disease and starvation in Africa. It would be nice if one of these benefit type shows pointed out how corruption and politics too often get in the way of getting these people the help they need.

I’ll assume that Clay spoke of the African plight only because he is an ambassador for UNICEF – a man who puts his time and his money where his mouth is – and doesn’t need a videotape of his charity broadcast to 60 million viewers. My guess is that the question that illicited that quote related only to Africa, and that’s the reason his answer was specific to that subject.

  • http://stores.ebay.com/BookWomanBlues-Book-Nook Bobbi

It would be nice if one of these benefit type shows pointed out how corruption and politics too often get in the way of getting these people the help they need.

    I keed, I keed Nola! :)

  • SpenserJ

But if they did that, why would anyone donate more money to be lost to corruption and politics?

Because there are a lot of great organizations that do important work without getting in the muck with the pigs. Differentiating between organizations that deliver actual services and those that deliver only lip service is key.

Where you send your money is far more important than how much you give. You can make a bigger impact with a small donation to an organization with a superior supply line than you can with a big donation to a “charity” giving it’s CEO a 5 Million Dollar salary.

I agree with Clay. It was clear that the Idol Gives back was more done to paint the show as benelovent and caring than really wanting to deal with the issues of starvation around the world. I means come on, the whole show felt like TPTB at AI just discovered that there were starving and homeless children in this world and now they are going to rid the world of it by have everyone donate every dime they have. I seriously wonder if all the money collected will even be seen by those kids with all the redtape that one has to go through.

On another note, wow, they got rid of Lakisha and kept Blake. I wonder if Melinda will be the next to go seeing that the judges did not tongue bathe her this week. I guess that should be enough grounds to get rid of her and keep Blake regardless of how he does.

Man, is this show turning into a joke..It’s beginning to feel like Season One, where all the good singers were criticized and then voted off so the lesser talented ones would still be around and not be much of a threat to Kelly.

  • sexygirl

Okay, I am going out on a limb now and say, Taylor will put out a darn good DVD but there will be more fussing and over-the-top discussion as to what he should or should not have put on the DVD that it will eventually disminish the substance of the DVD. I am betting my last dollar on that..

I haven’t seen his at my Walmart lately either. And those cds are the ones that most people want (at least if they are aware of the bonus track). I have one without it because I preordered from Amazon as soon as it was available, but I never have opened that one.
