    Dead or Alive?
On ”American Idol,” a visit from Jon Bon Jovi inspires some performances that could change the game entirely; plus, Simon gets mushy

Jon Bon Jovi, I owe you an apology. On the latest episode of Idolatry, I openly mocked your songbook and blasted the producers of American Idol for forgoing a rock & roll theme in favor of an evening built solely around your greatest hits. But while I still believe that your ham-handed turns of phrase and rote choruses are the very definition of bad medicine, I must also admit that said bad medicine is exactly what Idol needed…..

‘WEIRD’ YEAR: Taylor who? Chrome-domed hard rocker Daughtry is real ‘American Idol’

Q: So I hear that your song There And Back Again is the theme for WWE’s (World Wrestling Entertainment’s) Backlash. How did that happen?

A: I don’t know! I found out about it after the fact. I saw it on the Web site. I don’t always hear about it. My agents, they know what they’re doing. If they see things that wouldn’t be a good move, they wouldn’t do them. I trust them.

Q: That’s interesting. Is it hard for someone like you who’s had control of your career for so long, when you were struggling, to hand any of that control to someone else?

A: It’s more like mutual collaboration. They run stuff by me, to make sure. They don’t throw me out to the wolves without getting my approval or opinion. It’s cool knowing you have people that you trust to do that. They run it by me.

    Bush Thanks ‘American Idol’ Viewers

…He then turned to the first lady and asked: “Say Laura, you think I ought to sing something?”

“I don’t know darling, they’ve already seen you dance,” she quipped.

The joke referred to Bush’s appearance with a West African dance troupe to mark Malaria Awareness Day last week. After taking to the stage, he pounded on the drums enthusiastically and lead a group of colorfully dressed dancers and drummers in a little dance.

The scene was repeatedly televised on cable news networks and was the talk of late-night comedy shows.

Annie Lennox surprises and educates classroom
The singer/songwriter visited a CSULB women’s studies class for the MTVU show “Stand-In.”

…”I decided I had to make people more aware of [poverty],” Lennox said.

She is a part of “Make Poverty History,” a campaign aimed at ending poverty, and she recently promoted it on “American Idol.” She said that if people stand by and do nothing, nothing will happen and that people need to get involved.

OK, last nights show requires some translations:

(Jon Bon Jovi, about Blake Lewis): It is taking a song, that alot of people know and don’t want changed.

(Translation): This gimmick boy is taking my song and fucking it up.

(Simon Cowell about Blake Lewis): Half the people are going to love it and half the people are going to hate it. You did what you needed to do.

(Translation): If you can’t sing, you need to come out with a gimmick that makes you stand out.

Simon kissing Lakisha on the lips was icky.

If two people are going home, based soley on last nights performances, than Chris and Jordin better be packing.

Actually, I think I would send everyone, other than Phil home.

Web site predicts Idol votes before they’re cast
While not totally accurate, picks are usually right on

…Two weeks ago, Hellriegel’s numbers had Sanjaya Malakar in last place, with Blake Lewis and LaKisha Jones rounding out the bottom three. That’s exactly how the actual vote played out. (This past week, when none of the contestants was dropped, DialIdol’s stats had Chris Richardson in last place.)

Hellriegel said his site makes money through advertising, but not enough for him to quit his day job. He’s trying to stay grounded.

“I would rather more significant work be recognized than DialIdol,” Hellriegel said. “Ultimately, it’s a silly little Web site based on a TV show.”

American Idol: Big Hair and Bon Jovi

As a product of the à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢80s and growing up outside Philly, this particular LAist poster never got into Bon Jovi. Maybe it was the big hair. We donà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t know. But we preferred the skinny, pasty guys from England. Think John Taylor from Duran Duran or Martin Gore from Depeche Mode. So we were really, really not excited to cover tonightà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s American Idol. By 8:03 PM, we were having flashbacks and could already smell the Aqua Net.

When Ryan Seacrest announced that the final contestants would be singing à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“six Bon Jovi classics,à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ we chuckled. Puhleeze. Did they even have that many hits that you could consider à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“classicà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ? Not really. But the singers did admirably with the material they had to work with.

So hereà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s our take on how final six fared tonight:

    Is it Chris Richardson’s time?

One of the final six contestants on “American Idol,” Chris Richardson delivered another bulletproof performance Tuesday night with Bon Jovi’s “Wanted Dead or Alive.”

Richardson gave style and substance in a smart, fitted navy jacket and jeans and a rendition all the judges liked, yet we won’t know until tonight how he did. In the meantime, we asked for a synopsis from James Dickerson, whose blog posts at http://www.nappydiatribe.blogspot.com as “the Humanity Critic” have earned him awards and a contributing spot to Vibe magazine’s Web site, http://www.vibe.com. A great ‘AI’? Thank Bon Jovi

Why can’t every week be “Rock Week” on “American Idol”?

This year’s best “AI” performance show happened Tuesday when the contestants sang Bon Jovi tunes and were treated to a tutorial from the band’s charming frontman. The rocker-turned-actor was an excellent “American Idol” guest – he handed out compliments, constructive criticism and lots of hugs…

AI: You Give Bon Jovi A Good Name!

I’ll tell you what, y’all – at least four of your top 6 have finally remembered that they’re nearing the final part of a huge competition, and rocked into Bon Jovi night like they’re fighting to the last not to go home.

As for the other two – one of them did the best he could. And the other one knows she’s not going anywhere. And even though she used to be my favorite, based on the last two weeks, she kinda deserves to.

And yes, little Jordin, I’m talking about you.

    Here’s the rundown:

So, I see people like to talk about me in chat when I’m “not there”. Too bad I actually saw it. Wow.

For those who “midunderstood” my post on Idol Chatter yesterday: I actually specifically responded that Don’s comment about Blake being lucky to have the “oh he’s so cuuuuuuuute” preteen voters was quite the wide generalization about his fans. Excuse me for actually liking his musical STYLE. I’ll make sure and make myself a note that if Blake doesn’t look cute from now on out, not to vote for him.

Yes, Blake has vocal limitations. No shit. But the most technically proficient singer has never won this show (excepting maybe season 1, though I’d *almost* be inclined to say that Tamyra was the better singer). Why? Because it’s about more than just the voice. He’s the only one this season that even comes CLOSE to having any sort of X-factor.

But, since I take things too personally, and thus my opinions are only valid if you look thru rose colored glasses, I will shut up.

American Idol: Lakisha Jones May Still be a Goner

Despite a rave performance this week from Lakisha Jones on American Idol, she might become a victim of last week’s vote count, estimated to be twice the number of this week. Bon Jovi rocks ‘American Idol’

So Jon Bon Jovi was the mentor this week on “American Idol,” and most of the six contestants sang and performed well.

The weakest link? It was a bit of a surprise, as Jordin was obviously uncomfortable singing “Livin’ On a Prayer.”

Phil, yet again, had a great week, while Blake was willing to take a big risk with “You Give Love a Bad Name.” Melinda and Lakisha were both incredible. And Chris Richardson? He was decent, putting a little R&B twist on “Wanted Dead or Alive.”…

Melinda Doolittle, Blake Lewis have a nice night on “American Idol,” but oh Jordin takes a wrong turn

Bon Jovi night on “American Idol,” and the performances were all over the map Tuesday.

Jordin Sparks, who has seemed a front-runner, stumbled. She gave a screechy rendition of “Livin’ on a Prayer.” She was way out of her comfort zone and looked dressed for Halloween. “It was terrible,” Simon Cowell proclaimed. Candid Jordin agreed, which added to her appeal. (Funny how that works, isn’t it?) She tanked, but I don’t think she is going home Wednesday.

Two singers will be out, with votes from last week and this week added. Speaking of figures …

    May 1 — “Rock Week”

All of the contestants were spared in last week’s charity special, so the final six returned for a second week. Charity being a fleeting thing, two contestants will sing their last tonight.

Jon Bon Jovi was the guest mentor, as the contestants sang rock anthems, a style of music that, as judge Randy Jackson would later point out, was not a particular specialty of any of the singers.

So good, even Simon puckers up

What’s it take to warm the heart of the normally acerbic “American Idol” judge Simon Cowell? A Bon Jovi song he’s never heard before.
“I could actually kiss you after that,” Cowell told LaKisha Jones after her performance of Bon Jovi’s “This Ain’t a Love Song” before actually planting a kiss on her lips. “You rose to the challenge, you absolutely nailed it,” he said after the smooch. “And nice lips.”

Blake Lewis returned to his roots both musically (beat-box vocals) and follicly (no more frosted blond tips).

Our bottom three: Phil Stacey for his ham-tastic “Blaze of Glory,” Chris Richardson for a limp “Wanted Dead or Alive” and Jordin Sparks for selecting “Livin’ on a Prayer” with low notes she didn’t have a prayer of hitting.

American Idol: New Respect for Blake Lewis

It was kind of cheesy and sort of lame, but it was far from awful. Blake Lewis deserves credit – and another week on American Idol – for being original when he put a dance vibe on Bon Jovià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s classic à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“You Give Love a Bad Nameà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ during Tuesdayà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s performance episode of Fox TVà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s most popular show…

BUBLÃ’ ° OF THE WARM YET STILL FIZZY VARIETY

…Put it all together, and you can understand why some TV critics accused him of being inebriated when he filled in for an ailing Tony Bennett on the hit Fox series “American Idol” last month. But Bublà ©’s demeanor didn’t come out of a bottle – that’s just the way he is…

‘Idol’ gets best, worst and Bushes

With two of the six finalists down to their last 25 hours, “American Idol” watchers saw some of this year’s best and worst last night.

The assigned theme of Bon Jovi songs was not kind to Jordin Sparks, whose rendition of “Livin’ on a Prayer” inspired judge Simon Cowell to pronounce it “out of control. … It was terrible.”

But LaKisha Jones, who had rarely impressed Cowell in recent weeks, gave “This Ain’t a Love Song” a rhythm and blues twist that led Simon to say, “I actually could kiss you after that.”

    Then he did…

TEAM INDIFFERENCE, TEAM INDIFERENCE, RAH RAH RAH!

Yes, I am up early this morning…after breakfast it’s right to Starbucks to cram for the fed tax exam, which, thank GOD, is open book and open note.

I thought Phil did a great job last night, so it just lends credence to the whole “Simon only comments on the rehearsal” theory, that or there’s pimping and de pimping and stealth pimping of all kinds going on. Jordin? Meh. Like Kat last year, her voice is technically good, but somehow empty at the same time. I think Blake went a LITTLE overboard with the beatboxing, and though he has a pleasant tone, I think it’s sad that “pleasant tone” is enough of a reason to root for someone this season (well, notwithstanding the sex appeal factor, which I don’t see but will acknowledge exists). LaKisha needs to stop looking pissed off at me, Melinda was great but not at her best, and Chris Richardson made me yearn for Chris Daughtry.

I left the Palm Beach Post writer a comment on her blog (it is my old hometown paper, after all) about her Daughtry interview. I doubt she chose the headline, but I was disappointed in it anyway.

Jon Bon Jovi week could have been one that gave struggling à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“American Idolà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ finalists a last chance at salvation. Instead, it will likely go down as one of the most meaningless weeks of the year….

…the fed tax exam, which, thank GOD, is open book and open note.

Uh-oh…I found out the hard way that the “open book and open note” exam is worth thanking God for only if the exam is a “take-home,” not a one- or two-hour classroom exercise. :tongue2_tb: At any rate, good luck to you, Kat. :)

  • http://www.idolicious.com Kat

not a one- or two-hour classroom exercise.

Oh, but we get three and a half hours…for four short answer questions. Our prof said he’d rather us “think for an hour and write for ten minutes.” My professor is very cool.

Thanks for the good luck wishes. This is the class that kind of, err, fell by the wayside this semester, so we’ll see.

I really enjoyed last night’s show. I thought Blake was great! Even Chris did ok. Only Jordin sucked.

My torts professor must be related to your fed tax one. He once gave us a ten-item, multiple choice exam, which we had to answer in two hours. You can bet we thought for at least one hour and fifty-nine minutes, and yet, more than half of the class (including the top student) flunked that exam.

Woe, my Jordin! I listened to the mp3s at rickey’s, though, and I have to agree it was bad. :( Yeah, Lakisha sounded great.

  • JustSomeGuy

Was at work last night and missed the show, but caught up through the early morning hours on the internet.
At this point, I would never say this group lacks the talent of previous seasons. Really exceeded my expectations on those Bon Jovi songs. That had to be one of the best shows of the season.

A fellow worker said ChrisR bore the most resemblence to John Bon Jovi’s voice. Too bad cuz he gone

Listened to Phil with no video, and I thought he
nailed Bon Jovi. Phil doesn’t deserve the boot.

And after last night, neither does Lakisha.

And you can’t kick Jordin off because of just one crappy performance.

Tonight’s show is going to be painful.

  • http://www.idolicious.com Kat

    Hmmmm, you must be tired.

Well, I did have a migraine last night. That was after the First Amendment Law exam, which, despite being my favorite class, was a real b!tch of an exam. I knew everthing on it, but there just wasn’t time to organize my thoughts and put them down in the way I would have optimally liked. Bah!

My Torts professor gave us a 48 hour take home exam. I’d heard about it all semester and, as a 1st semester 1L, was dreading it…esp. since our Torts professor was kind of kooky and didn’t really, um, teach Torts. (Also, he cried a lot.) But I studied my a$$ off for it, even though it was take home. And I booked it.

Tax, though? I just haven’t been keeping up with it all semester like I should. My energy has gone into 1st Am. law and law review stuff…

  • JustSomeGuy

    Which brings me to Blake.

Always thought ‘Time of the Season’ was the best performance so far, not just because of the vocal, but song selection and a terrific arrangement. Grew up with that song, one of the truly underrated hits of the 60′s which has aged remarkably well.

Then on ‘Imagine’ Blake had the musical instincts not to tamper with that song.

Again last night…the arrangement, creativity and instincts really set him apart from the other contestents.

Whether he wins or not, who cares. Blake displays the most musical inelligence of any contestant ever to appear on Idol.

  • http://www.myspace.com/mignonette33 purplesmile

Whether he wins or not, who cares. Blake displays the most musical inelligence of any contestant ever to appear on Idol.

Extremely debatable. Being different, for the sake of being different, does not make you musically intelligent. I will agree, he probably has the most balls of anyone that has ever appeared on AI. He does try different things and I will give him kudos for that. However, there comes a time where you tamper with a song to the detriment of it. This is where I think Blake crosses the line. I thought beatboxing was boring, in its day. Today it seems even more dated. Maybe next week Blake can where a red jacket and a glove on one hand.

No matter what you try, you need the vocal chops to back it up. That is also where, I think, Blake lacks.

Tonightà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s show is going to be painful.

I thought last nights show was painful. IMHO, the only one who was decent was Phil.

Bucky is hilarious. He and Kellie should do some kind of comedy show together. I still laugh at Bucky and Elliott on Larry K Live talking about the “Antonella controversy.” Remember her? Good on Leno for being such a Taylor fan. If I wasn’t on Team Indifference, I’d have to say that I liked Phil the best of the guys last night. As long as Blake gets the votes, does it matter if everyone here doesn’t dig him? Does it even matter if he wins/places on AI? Last year’s fourth place finisher is doing just fine. Sorry, but once they started signing everyone, it killed the whole “There is only one American idol.” There may be but he gets treated like carp. (P.S. Elliott’s single is really burning up the Top 40 charts. Amazing indeed)

Good advice for all MJ Peeps from Bucky:

    20. Does it get overwhelming worrying about the opinion of others?

Not so much now. When I first started Idol, I came in with the attitude of, “I’m going to make everybody love me.” And then I got on the Internet and started seeing just how wrong I was. (laughs) So now the only thing I can do is do what I do. Be who I am. And hopefully they like it, and hopefully that’s what they want. If that’s not the case, what can you do? I’m not a big worrier. I don’t worry about things because I found a long time ago that it doesn’t fix anything. It doesn’t solve it. Either fix it or move on because worrying doesn’t fix anything.

I’m not ready for LaKisha to go yet, either. I thought she was fantastic last nite, as was Phil–whose very existence has confused me for weeks now. They were the top two. Melinda is always good and boring. The less said about Chris, the better. He’s toast tonite. I had nightmares about Jordin’s performance. It wasn’t just the vocals or the hair. Her movements were awkward. She seemed extremely uncomfortable. The whole thing was a little hard to watch.

Now on to Blake. Blake is only an ok singer. Nothing special. Beatboxing, here and there, to keep things interesting is fine. But I think he overdid it last nite. I could be wrong, but it felt like he only sang half of the time. It seems a bit unfair to the other contestants. What if someone decided to clap their hands for half a song? No matter how cleverly they did it, we’d call “foul!”

Am I entertained by Blake? To a degree, yes. But that’s becoming dwarfed by the feeling that he is cheating.

I did think that last night pushed this mostly boring year of Idol up a notch.

It was fun stuff from ALL the Idols (for a change) and I felt most were rocking it vocally. Even Chris R, who was not great, at least abandoned the nasally boy band for the most part.

I enjoyed Blake just because, in a sea of predictability with this year’s contestants, he was different.

And Melinda really looked like she was having a blast on stage.

Metta. I agree. I want Lakisha around for awhile. I always am interested in what she is going to bring to the night.

Phil has the chops. He might make it past Blake or Jordin. Plus all those navy guys in the audience rooting for him didn’t hurt.

  • rher

After last night, I still can’t seem to find a favorite. I didn’t like Melinda’s song last night, and there was too much gurgled gruffness to her voice, but she is growing on me. I hope next week is BeeJees week. I think she will do great.

I haven’t really liked Jordin for several weeks, I think starting with Gwen Stefani. She was interupting the judges too much last night when they were trying to talk, finishing their sentences and such. She knew she f’d up big time.

I liked Phil. He seems to have a lot of fans. What if he wins? The beginning of Lakisha’s song was hard on the ears. It’s like she can’t sing low and gently. I prefer Melinda to the 3 power voices.

Chris needs to go this week, although I still think he is a cutie patootie. I agree with Metta about Blake (handclapping? I think Bo really would have wanted to play his guitar on stage). Blake’s voice isn’t what is going to win him the competition, it is more the package. However, I was entertained by the whole beatboxing and making the song sound fresh and interesting. Oh well, I don’t care who wins anyway, just enjoying the show to see what happens.

  • sarahinwv

and how white were Bon Jovi’s TEETH ????? WOW !!! I think the people on that new planet they’ve discovered could see them.

  • aek

Yes, Blake has vocal limitations. No shit. But the most technically proficient singer has never won this show (excepting maybe season 1, though Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢d *almost* be inclined to say that Tamyra was the better singer). Why? Because ità ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s about more than just the voice.

While it may be true that the most technically proficient singer does not win every year, at least all of the winner are definately “good” singers. If Blake were to win, that would no longer be true.

He really lacks in vocal ability. For me, last night’s performance epitomized style over substance.

Yeah, he’s a good beatboxer, but a barely passable singer.

I thought that all the beatboxing took away from the meaning of the song, jmo.

My sister even commented that “he has to do that stuff because her can’t pull it off vocally”….I agree.

Heà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s the only one this season that even comes CLOSE to having any sort of X-factor.

    That’s an opinion. I don’t share it.

With all of that said, I still think Chris R. is the suckiest to listen to of them all. Yuck!

Tuesday Night’s Idol: Blake and Melinda Livin’ on a Prayer?

    Episode 33
Everybody seemed relieved to be past last week’s responsibility of doing good and glad to just get on with the music, even if that meant tackling rock anthems by Bon Jovi. Simon was so smitten with Lakisha Jones’s version of “This Ain’t a Love Song” he gave her a kiss. Is that a first? Wouldn’t it beautiful if they fell in love and broke all the rules and Jon Bon Jovi wrote a big ballad about it? And Kelly Clarkson had a hit with it? I could go on….

When I watch Blake, I see an artist. He doesnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t just sing songs. He devours them, re-imagines them, and spits them back out in a form way hipper than most mortals could ever imagine.

I loved this quote from one of the articles this morning. :thumbup_tb:

Last night was leaps and bounds better than I expected. I guess that should teach me to write off a genre before it happens. I like some of Bon Jovi’s songs but didn’t expect most of them to do well.

I tend to disagree with those that say Blake doesn’t have a good voice but it’s all subjective as we know from last season. :wink1_tb: I do think he’s an excellent performer which is also important. I agree with those that say he has a future as a producer apart from singing/performing.

I expect Chris & Lakisha/Phil to go tonight although I’m starting to think that Jordin may not be TCO much longer if she doesn’t do better. She’s been really good some weeks, okay others (although pimped nonetheless), and bad a couple of weeks (Gwen Stefani wk and last night).

But if I had to put money down at this very moment on which singer is most likely to stick around, I’d place my wager on Blake Lewis, whose electrifying retooling of ”You Give Love a Bad Name” has likely surpassed Mindy Doo’s ”My Funny Valentine” as the season’s watercooler performance. Bon Jovi was right that ”16 measures of him not singing on a show that’s supposed to highlight singers” was a risky move (though not as risky as sharing Jordin’s black-and-red hair dye), and Blake’s whooshing opening sound effects (which sounded to me like the Diet Coke I crack open every morning around 7 a.m.) were a wee bit indulgent, but the rest of the performance was exhilarating à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’ breathing life into what I’d written off as a tired ’80s anthem. The ”you give love-lllll-love-love-lll-love a bad, bad name” breakdown had me clapping like baby-seal Paula, and while the judges seemed a little tentative in their praise, this was the performance that à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’ whether or not it secured Blake a spot in the final two à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’ pretty much guaranteed him a record deal.

trolling the net for Tay info.

At least I don’t troll someone elses country for the man himself.

When I watch Blake, I see an artist. He doesnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t just sing songs. He devours them, re-imagines them, and spits them back out in a form way hipper than most mortals could ever imagine.

See, this just BEGS for snark!

This begs for some great photochop. BOULDER!!! Where are you?? I envision Blakes face on the body of God. You know beatboxing for us mortals.

  • bean99

Snark away, Metta. I like Blake so much I have Teflon coating, lol. He’s single handedly making idol fun this season imo.

  • jersey

I agree bean. *sniff sniff* I feel like a lonely Taylor fan over here on Team Plaid.

Donà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s comment about Blake being lucky to have the à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“oh heà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s so cuuuuuuuuteà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ preteen voters was quite the wide generalization about his fans.

To be fair to Don, he never actually uses the word “preteen”:

“Blake also lacks power and has the most limited vocal range of the remaining contestants, so heà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s gonna have to sell us on his sincerity -à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’ or, more accurately, his ability to fake that quality. Changing his facial expressions to reflect the words heà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s singing would work wonders in this area. Since all he has to do to survive is garner the third-lowest amount of votes this week, his à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“but heà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s soooo cuteà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ fanbase may be enough to keep him in the contest regardless.”

Don is making a broad generalizion here, but he never states that he thinks that only small children are voting for him. We’ve seen here that old people can also vote for a contestant they think is cute.

Don also goes on to predict that Randy will mention that he played on the studio version of “Blaze of Glory” and sure enough, Randy did.

I thought that judging Blakes performance last night was an interesting case. It kind of reminded me of figure skating where one must balance the athletic and artistic portions of the performance.

In a something billed as a “singing” competition (which we know it is not), Blake did the figure skating equivalent of waving his hands around a lot while attempting nothing more difficult than a double axle and two footing most of his landings. The degree of singing difficulty was very low, but the artistic merit was very high (IMO).

So, how does one rate that performance when we know this is not a singing competition? Well, reasonable people can differ.

Meanwhile, last night, IMO, Melinda, Phil and Lakisha were landing quad jumps and Jordin tripped going into her first jump and spent the rest of her performance zamboni-ing the ice with her a$$

  • Metta

Weà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ve seen here that old people can also vote for a contestant they think is cute.

    And Melinda bores me.

    ___________________

Melinda, didn’t bore me last night…Someone mentioned the other day that they were hoping that she would channel a little Tina this week.. And I replied that I didn’t think she had any Tina to channel.. Well, I did see a little last night…NOT a whole lot, but a little…
With LaKisha, I’m afraid she waited too long to show that she does have a personality.. I’m hoping she’s NOT gong home tonight, but that could very well be the case…

  • Desdemona

Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢m not ready for LaKisha to go yet, either. I thought she was fantastic last nite, as was Philà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’whose very existence has confused me for weeks now. They were the top two.

I love metta! (See, I don’t take sides between jj & metta) :)

I think Phil is the Elliott of A6 – he has the best voice of all the guys, but he’s just now beginning to blossom – I hope it’s not too late. Do not want him to go home tonight. I really, really want him to be in Top 3 at least. I really, really don’t care for Blake, but I recognize his popularity and do think he’ll be in the finale for sure – not sure who will win the title. Side note: I think he looks much better with dark hair!

  • Metta

Jordin tripped going into her first jump and spent the rest of her performance zamboni-ing the ice with her a$$

Hee! The first word my son learned to spell that starts with Z was Zamboni. De rigeur for Canucks.

“Blakeà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s voice isnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t what is going to win him the competition, it is more the package.”

Exactly. As was the case with Taylor last year. AI is not a singing competition, it is a popularity contest.

  • radname

I didn’t like Melindas performance, I thought it was good at times, but the other times i was like woah this is awkward, it seemed like she was rushing in words at the end at times.

  • pj

Heh. my comment went into moderation b/c I used the bad word.

Anyway, here’s my comments, sans bad word.

The Plaidster isnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t just ballsy, heà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s actually smart. His fans were wanting him to bring the beatboxing back and deliver a showstopping performance after the last two ballads, and he did just that.

Also, he uses his voice to beatbox. The clapping hands analogy is a poor one, IMO. He plays guitar and piano, but he didnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t whip those out on stage. Was Leslie Hunt cheating when she scatted?

Not everyone is going to like Blakeà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s voice, but I love it. Heà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s actually the most consistant VOCALIST besides Melinda.
His studio recordings are love. There was nothing à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“weakà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ about his performance last night. He belted that chorus.

And yes, I agree that Blake has great musical instincts.

Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢m glad the hair turned out to be a non-issue.

  • Metta

Oh I can snark on my own idol, no problem, it just feels different doing it from a different side of the fence from most Taylor fans (LOL)!

If you call yelling “woo” singing. :tongue1_tb:

  • radname

The (huge) difference between Taylor and Blake is that Taylor always sang his songs. Every word.

Uh… Blake sings his songs, he just adds in effects with his voice.

  • JJ

Also, he uses his voice to beatbox.

Hmmm, the definition of beatboxing is using your voice to simulate the sound of drums. However, it is not singing. Shit, I hate definding Metta, but I agree with the clapping hands analogy. The difference between Blake beatboxing yesterday and Leslie Hunt scatting, is that Leslie scatted for a few seconds. IMHO, she scatted to enhance the song. Blake beatboxed to hide his lack of singing ability.

  • Metta

Uhà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ¦ Blake sings his songs, he just adds in effects with his voice.

    Not last nite, he didn’t.

    LOL. are you serious.

  • JJ

Oh, yes he did. I will find it though we shouldnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t go down this road. Sorry.

I don’t recall him wooing in the middle of a performance. However, if he did, it was not for half the song.

Also, I do remember he spoke the word turns in In the Ghetto, again, for effect. IMHO, the effect worked.

However, I think the point that bitch metta was trying to show was that it is OK to beatbox, talk, woo, scat, etc to enhance a performance. However, last night, Blake beatboxed for most of the song. Beatboxing may be using your mouth, but it is not singing.

As Simon said, some are going to love it, some are going to hate it. We have both here.

I will point out something, Simon did not say if he liked it. He said Blake did what he had to do, there is a difference.

  • Metta

    If you call yelling à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“wooà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ singing.

Taylor never wooed in the middle of a performance.

JJ is wrong. (Whew! All is right with the world again.) On The Commodores “Easy” there were a few whoos, BUT Taylor never “wooed” in lieu of singing a lyric.

  • pj

I will point out something, Simon did not say if he liked it. He said Blake did what he had to do, there is a difference.

True. He also didn’t say he hated it. Besides, who cares if Simon liked it? I’m guessing he doesn’t vote. :)

  • Kirsten

What Blake did last night is no worse then someone adding runs into their song.

Runs still require one to sing. Normally, I hate the overuse of runs (a few judiciously placed ones are great), but they do demonstrate the ability to sing.

It’s fine for Blake to beat-box. I’m not saying he cannot do it, but I don’t see it as singing. Reasonable people can differ.

It was a really fun performance and I would be surprised if it doesn’t make an appearance on the Idol tour (which by the way, the dates have been announced: http://www.americanidol.com/news/view/?pid=776 ….the winner and runner-up are going to have to race to get their CDs out by the November 13th expected date).

  • bean99

I’m so not going into comparing Blake with Taylor. :sealed_tb: It just doesn’t matter anymore. It’s season 6 now.

  • LB2

Simon looked pleased – I’d err on the side that he liked Blake (I think he always has). I imagine that performance was really energetic in person and one couldn’t help but get sucked into it all. Once again, just conjecturing so I can’t say for certain that Simon liked it. But he seemed to.

I’m not going to engage in this Taylor v. Blake thing (and I’m also not getting into the cheating thing either – I can’t change anyone’s mind). Taylor and Blake are different in so many ways and we all have our reasons for enjoying one over the other or enjoying both. Blake did what he had to to appease his fans and I’m glad he did. That was one of the most entertaining performances for me on AI.

Sept 22 is the last performance. Means theyà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ll probably start the process while on the road, like Chris D and some of the others did last season.

It might actually be a little easy this year. Didn’t they have 59 shows last year? So, they will have 9 fewer performance days (unless they add more shows).

  • sexygirl

I’m sorry, but trying to use “the Taylor is a performer and not a singer” excuse is a bit much. The last time I checked part of singing a song “live” is the performance. If performing was not important then Sanjaya would still be there because he was a better singer than Chris and Blake, IMO. When you’re standing infront of an audience you have to perform a song. Not just sing it. Singing songs are for the recording studios..

Blake performance was nice but his desire to substitute the beatbox instead of singing is, IMO, cheating. Everyone, who has ever been on AI, had to singing their songs without any other assistance except how you choose to PERFORM the song. IMO, Blake’s beatboxing is equivalent to allowing Taylor or Chris and Bucky to use their instruments as assistants.

  • pj

Has Phil closed the show, yet? I think I may have picked my favorite. it’s only taken how long????????????. I’m digging Phil…. creepy Midnight Oil’s lead singer’s long lost twin brother and all. :surprise_ee:

  • aek

Taylor has a much better range than Blake…as do all of the previous winners of AI. They are all better singers than him.

While I agree that one shouldn’t have to have the BEST voice to win, all should be good singers….Blake is not a good singer…he is merely a pleasant singer.

Have the judges ever complimented his vocals specifically? I’m not saying they haven’t, but I don’t recall.

As far as TH is concerned, I still believe that the only reason people dismiss his vocals is because he happened to dance and sometimes act “crazy”. So in essence, I think what Simom said to Taylor is actually true…”with all your barminess, it’s easy to forget that you are a very, very good singer.”

  • JJ

I have to say, Phil is starting to gain his stride. He started off slow but I can now see him going all the way. I think the force-feeding of Blake and Jordin seems more over-the-top than that of DAUGHTRY, and I liked Chris last season, but… And Chris R. is fading faster than a bad tan..

Since apparently we have to bring Taylor into everything here, I will say this. Taylor doing Play That Funky Music last year was equivalent to Blake’s performance last night. He gave HIS fans what they wanted. He put himself out there and took a risk – and it paid off. If you don’t like him, that’s fine. There were plenty of people last year who didn’t get Taylor. Do we really need a thousand posts (by the same posters) saying I don’t get Blake, I don’t like him? I don’t. One post is plenty.

Has Phil closed the show, yet?

Phil closed the show on the first night of the semi-finals (final 24). He has not closed again. Meanwhile, he has had to sing first three times (twice in the finals).

On the other hand, Melinda has closed the show three times while Jordin and Lakisha have closed twice. Melinda and Jordin have both closed the show twice in the finals. Jordin is the only singer left in the competition who has not sung first in the finals.

  • JustSomeGuy

Websters defines singing as “to produce musical sounds with the voice.”
    Is drumming a musical sound???
I think it is because music tends to conmtain a beat.
Therefore, by definition beatboxing is singing.

And another thing about Blake. He works harder than most coming up with these arrangements. Ya think he’d ever forget the words to songs. Not in your life. Not with the effort her puts into every performance.

And thinking about it, yeah Chris for sure. But in all fairness, 17 is way too young. Jordin should be the second boot tonight.

  • Tony

I haven’t watched AI since Sanjaya left, but this hoopla about Blake got me interested.

I don’t think he can sing, and if he won, he’d be the first winner that actually sucks.

I hear that he relied heavily on everything that would distract from his voice (dying his hair, beat boxed, etc.). I’m downloading the episode now.

Okay, thanks, pj! I did vote for Blake and for several others last night (Lakisha, Phil and Melinda).

On another note: It is interesting that Chris S is the only one to do a fan base shout out so far this season. Wonder if that usually starts later in the season, or if the TPTB are frowning on that now?

  • sarahinwv

Kirsten, Thanks for the 411 !! I soooooo hope Phil stays put. And I’m mad that it took me this long to “Go Navy” I’m not comparing seasons, all I’m saying is it took all but 2 seconds to get on Taylor’s wave. What’s up with that?

  • SpenserJ

I for one really enjoyed last night’s show. I thought Jon was a great coach and I loved his comments to the contestants. I really hated Blake’s hair, but I loved his performance. I thought that was a ton of fun.

Kiki rocked the house. I know I said this 45 times last night in chat, but if she gets the boot tonight, I’ll be sad. I threw her some votes in the last hour – as many as I could while still chatting at the same time.

I thought Phil really did a great job again. He sure is the comeback kid. I take back all of the nasty stuff I said about him.

Although I’ll miss his sparkly eyes and mega watt smile, it is definitely time for my little cutie Chris R to go.

In my little dream word, Jordin would be accompanying him out the door, but alas I believe that won’t happen. Her performance last night was just laughable. Her hair looked ridiculous, her pseudo rocker demeanor was not convincing at all and her movements were just plain awkward. I didn’t think we’d see a worse performance from her than the one she did on Gwen Stefani night, but I guess I was wrong.

I’d rather have just about anyone win other than Jordin or Melinda (she’s great – but she does nothing for me), so I probably won’t be all that excited by the end result. But, for me it’s been a fun season to watch.

My take on Phil’s AI run:
He started out, as all of them did, testing the waters. What will fly with the judges and the voters. He probably relied on songs he’d sung before in his Navy performance career. His vocals were forced and, IMO, boring. His run in the bottom three changed his outlook. “Let me learn while I’m here and just have some fun”. It loosened him up emotionally and vocally. He started to deliver believable performances which were not only entertaining but vocally strong. His newly found confidence is very attractive.
Kick it to the end, Phil!!!

I think it’s that Phil has not been as consistent. I like Phil the best of the guys…I believe he has the best voice of the guys.

With that said, he can be very inconsistent within the same song. Alot of times he starts of sounding bad, and then sounds absolutely great by the end. So when it’s over, I’m kinda confused as to whether I liked it or not.

But he does have a great, unique sounding voice…if he could just get a good handle on it…imo.

That MTV piece on the Blaker Girls featured interviews with several of his friends and they all mentioned that he’s a hard worker. I think Sligh also mentioned Blake’s work ethic on his blog. I appreciate that he puts time into these arrangements to make them more interesting.

As for Phil, I voted for a him a few times on country night. I thought that was his best performance to date. Last night he was hamming it up a bit too much for my taste, although he sounded good. He’s not as comfortable on stage as some of the others, but he should get better.

Although Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ll miss his sparkly eyes and mega watt smile, it is definitely time for my little cutie Chris R to go.

You know, I’m so happy to see people arguing about Season 6, rather than the same ole same ole Season 5, I’m not even in the mood to lay on a smackdown.

However, I will remind everyone, once again, to respect each other’s opinions. Differ in opinions, but please don’t be condescending about it or “gang” up on each other. Also, don’t tell each other what to post. If you see a problem, drop me an email, and I will take care of it. Thanks you.

  • AngC30

I also agree with the reason Phil is doing well lately is because he is building confidence…I hope to see him stick around a while longer…I vote Phil as most improved singer this season, he has definately grown a lot since the beginning of the competition and he is winning me over :)

    Go team Phil!!! :)

  • radname

I didn’t remember Phils performance by the end of the night. After they played all them back I said that he probably had the best vocal of the night. But his performances and vocals are always just ordinary for me. He’s never blown me away with what he can do with his voice.

  • Tony

    Just watched it.

It’s a crime that Blake is still on the show. He’s the biggest gimmick this show has ever had.

Taylor was rather gimmicky as well, but at least he could sing.

  • MN Sue

The only thing I’ll miss about Chris are the BambiLashes.

  • SpenserJ

He seemed a bit nervous in his pimp chair interview with Ryan. I have wanted him gone for ages, but I think Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ll miss him if he goes. Strange, huh?

I told you that smile is hypnotizing – it is useless to resist. I’ll be sad to see him go too. And, I think he knows there is not a chance in hell he can make up the ground he lost last week. Heck, he’s probably already packed.

Oh, and I forgot to mention that I think the reason Jordin is tops on DI and may indeed have the most votes this week even though she sucked is obvious. They very clearly made it seem that she was either the lowest or next to lowest vote getter last week. Even though that was most probably not even close to true. Most likely, the bottom two were Chris & Lakisha. The show manipulated the audience into fearing for Jordin’s safety in the competition and completely hosed Kiki in the process.

Now, that kind of obvious pimping and manipulation pisses me off and makes me want to join in with the tin foil hat crew.

I actually think Blake has as much range as Taylor, his range is higher than Taylors but it’s all still there. I think they’re both king of choosing songs that require little vocal work.

  • MN Sue

Tony – Blake’s gimmick fits in with all the other ones this season. Can you say, songwriting contest, IdolGivesBack, oohhh SANJAYA!

  • radname

The people going home tonight are going to be the same people that would have gone home last week. With over 70 million votes cast last week, and only about 35 million this week (i’ll give them the benefit of the doubt and say half.) does the voting really matter this week?

  • MN Sue

    Agreed, Rad

  • Kirsten

But you know, Taylor isn`t competing this year so maybe we can leave him out of this debate.

The range debate has raged for over a year. We`ve dissected every song sang last year and established what range is required for each. Check the archives.

Please don`t let this is end up like those people who try to debate whether the New York Yankees of 1938 could have beaten the San Diego Padres of 1984.

  • emeralgem

Just :zip_ee: my mouth over here

  • MN Sue

Combining two voting night totals won’t change the fact that Lakisha’s going home tonight. But wasn’t it great to hear such a strong vocal from her on her last night?

  • pj

Now, that kind of obvious pimping and manipulation pisses me off and makes me want to join in with the tin foil hat crew.

I know. It happens every year.

I know I shouldn’t get sucked into this, but there is NO WAY this kid has Taylor’s range.

As much as I don’t care for DO I Make You Proud, it involves a very wide range, and Taylor nailed it… Blake would have to beat box and totally change up the tune to sing it.

I can only imagine what Blake would do to the National Anthem.

Again, TH received kudos throughout the season on his vocals, I believe Blake receives his kudos for how much he changes things up…

  • MN Sue

Just thinkin’… Considering the talk of the special bond between Chris and Lakisha, isn’t it fitting they leave on the same night?

    Pop / Rock (2007-04-30)
Sixty-Four Year Old American Idol Contestant Sherman Pore Releases ‘For My Lady Love’ CD

LOS ANGELES (Top40 Charts/ Capitol Records) – Every once in a while an American Idol contestant touches the hearts of viewers in a very special way. The latest contestant to pull off such a feat was none other than sixty-four year old Sherman Pore. Even though Sherman was thirty-six years over the American Idol age limit twenty-eight, he showed up at the auditions with a petition to be an American Idol contestant. Sherman then told a touching story of losing his “lady love” of twenty years to ovarian cancer.

A year later, Pore has recorded amazing standards CD entitled For My Lady Love, set for release on Z-Entertainment on May 22, 2007. Part of the proceeds from every CD will go to City of Hope’s programs in cancer research, treatment and education, Pore has also been named as an ambassador for the organization.

Yes, it was. I still hope she manages to squeak by, but I don’t think there will be any shock boots tonite.

It only matters if math is important to you – if you don’t believe that math is ‘real’ of ‘factual’ then no, it doesn’t matter. If the spread from lowest vote getter to highest vote getter on Night 1 was small them Night 2 matters a great deal. If, however, the spread between the bottom 2 and the rest of the field was large on Night 1 then Night 2 matters less.

So of course it “matters”, how much it matters depends on what the Night 1 results were.

Taylor fans…….. and it is current. I happened by luck to tune into FOX this morning if by chance they might mention Taylor today and a few seconds later there he was being interviewed. If I had to listen to 12 Melindas battling it out every week I would be pressing the remote like crazy. It is the thrill of the unknown, the bobble on the tightrope, the missed two hand catch on the trapeze and the freefall without a net that keeps Idol the most entertaining reality show in history. Melinda is the most amazingly consistent performer in the history of Idol but I need Sanjaya and his ponyhawk muffing the words to “Bathwater” or Lakisha making Jesus take the wheel and run for the hills.

Well, now that everyone else has moved on, I actually enjoyed the beatboxing last night, for the first time. I think virtually anything would improve upon a Bon Jovi song, though. That was the first performance this season I watched back (with the exception of a couple of Sanjaya’s more amusing ones)

I don’t think it’s unfair to allow him to do the beatboxing – if he feels the need to bring beatboxing and moonwalking back to the forefront, good luck to him. I do think it’s a little unfair that he always seems to get a reverb or echo effect on his microphone which is noticeably missing from pretty much everyone else’s, and which probably enhances his light, airy vocals quite a bit. I also think he cares more about the singer (and how “cool” he sounds) than the song, but it might just be because he’s stuck doing covers.

I really like last night’s show. I’d say it was as good as any from 2006. I really like Phil now. I have to admit things. Its just how it is. To me he is now Philtasic. I hope he makes the cut tonight but if he doesn’t, Phil, “I love ya man.”

As an aside-I know for a fact that I’ve been talked about in chat and not always in pleasant terms but I don’t give a fuck. I am who I am.

Ok- I know this has nothing to do with Blake’s performance last night which I thought was decent. I’m not the biggest fan of the beatbox so I will not judge the man. For some reason the lighting and effects brought this to mind. Again its not a slight or jab at Blake in anyway whatsoever, I just wanted to share a bit how my mind operates.

At this point, dave is so freakin’ hot, I’m ready to divorce dear hubby. I love dave.

Someone said once, that you can tell the popularity of a contestant by the amount of items up for sale on ebay. So, since I’m bored, I took a peak:

    Lakisha – 13
    Phil – 14
    Chris – 16
    Melinda – 21
    Jordin – 21
    Blake – 57

    and just for kicks:

    Sanjaya – 77

Chris Sligh has posted a thoughtful reply to someone who trashed one of the singles in his album entitled — “KNOW”. The blog is entitled : LET’s TALK MUSIC.

Here is the critique he is responding to :

This is exactly the kind of generic, effortless, meaningless faux-rock that keeps talented musicians, performers, and composers from getting main stream exposure. As long as this kind of music is being played by mtv and radio stations, kids will be robbed of the opportunity to hear music with artistic integrity. It makes me cringe.”

    Re last evening’s show…….

IMO, Melinda and Phil were both perfection, vocally.

Blake was fantastic. Very unique and very entertaining.
The only problem I have with Blake is his beat boxing is much
better visually. I would never purchase a CD of it, though.

Jordin: What a mess. You are going downhill girl, at a time
when you should be heading for the top.

LaKisha had a great performance. Where have you been for weeks?

    Chris: I just don’t like you. I don’t like your JT look, I don’t
like your voice and I don’t like your cocky attitude.

While LaKisha had a great performance, she and Chris were so far
down during last week’s voting, I don’t think anything they could
have done last evening would have saved them. (TPTB maybe)

  • pj

    Dave is a Philastine! Heh.

    JJ,interessting. I guess in Sanjie’s case ebay popularity doesn’t = votes.

Stefunny, I read that popwatch article. I loved Blake’s dad’s sign: “Beatboxers Can Sing Too.” Sounds like the studio audience was lovin’ some Blake. :)

Spense, I’m tempted. Seriously tempted. :)

ETA: I’d really like to get a hold of the .mp3 sales data to see who’s doing well.

    Hi All!

Back from Denver. Oh he put on a great show!

Got to sit front row center for the sound check. Taylor was relaxed, happy, and very friendly with those of us who were fortunate enough to be there.

When he finished the first sound check song he said “How ya’ll doing?”

We were doing quite well, thank you, and we told him as much.

Then he asked if we had any requests. I yelled “Free Bird!”

Taylor and the rest of the band laughed. Lauren started playing the intro and Taylor said to me, “We’ll play it, but you have to sing it.”

I told him that NO ONE wanted to hear me sing.

After the sound check, he told us to come on up if we wanted pics with him or if we wanted him to sign anything. He took time to take two pics with me and my friend and signed some stuff for us too.

    Just really cool!

He put every ounce of his energy into his performance. It was freaking fantastic. Didn’t think I’d see a show that rivaled Herman’s, but this one did.

Good thing I’m not in charge of getting the set list, because I just get lost in his performance. Every song melds into one big happy song for me. I’m useless.

Will definitely go see him every chance I get…

I just can’t BELIEVE someone threw a bra on stage. Who would do such a thing?? :jittery_tb:

Chris Sligh’s response tells us a lot about his knowledge of popular music and also shows how he has really studied the history of POP and how we got to where we are.

Sligh also takes time to explain his approach to writing music and who his influences are. The man apparently likes to experiment.

I’m not sure it this expereimental attitude goes well with the Simon Cowell’s of the world…. yep, those who want to stick to the tried and true.

There’s just so many things pointing to open toes being a good single, from the sound of it (which is very popular right now) to the subject matter (open toes are hot right now) to the fact its a summer song. if they don’t release it as a single i will punch RCA in their collective face.

  • tinawina

I wonder how much of this year’s voting is being influenced by the contestant’s percieved ability to sell records? I remember the topic coming up somewhat in years past, but not nearly as much as it seems to whenever I talk to people about Idol this year. I guess it’s the legacy of the Taylor/Daughtry thing. Makes me kind of sad though. I like the aspect of Idol that involves giving someone talented a shot that probably wouldn’t have gotten one otherwise. It would be a shame if we all turned into little record company execs, turning away talented people who aren’t fitting into the right mold. Sigh.

  • pj

tinawina, I don’t know about anyone else, but I vote for the one I like the best. I have various reasons for liking a contestant, but one of those is not because I think they are marketable. That’s something too hard to predict.

Song choice, performance, voice, and personality all play into it for me.

  • tinawina

pj, I appreciate the response. I don’t think everyone does think like what I described. I believe I’m just lamenting how much more of that kind of talk I’m hearing this year as opposed to other years. Who knows how much of the actual voting public considers marketability, and to what degree? Perhaps its just my experience to hear an increase in that kind of chatter! Ignore me, I’m just in a mood today. :(

  • radname

tinawina, i like who i like i don’t really care how many records they sell. They sell a million that’s great! they sell 10, as long as they keep making music i can get access to i’m happy.

  • Tony

I’m about to hear Elliott for the first time on the radio! I don’t usually listen to the radio while at school (OSU), but I see that his song finally got added to the top 40 station here in Columbus, OH.

I just now turned on the radio, and the DJ says that Elliott is coming up next. I thought that was kinda spooky. lol

    A few thoughts:

3 weeks is too long to wait to release Katharine’s next single. With her sales in the 5k range this week- she might fall out of the top 200 by the time the single gets in heavy rotation *IF* it gets in heavy rotation.

I personally would not have went with Love Story. It’s very close in style to Over It- and Kat needs a song that will be played by some of the more urban pop stations like LA, etc.

I guess time will tell but I’m not sure this was the right decision by RCA.

  • NOLA

XO, welcome to our world :(

  • jersey

XO – apparently, Kat has hired Taylor’s CMT (TM Kirsten).

  • NOLA

First Bo, then Taylor, now Kat.

  • http://www.idolicious.com Kat

Maybe I’m in the minority here, but…I really like Love Story, and I think it was the right choice for RCA. I think it’s going to become a huge summer hit. I really do. And if I listened to Top 40 radio, I’d probably jam along to it in my car. I’d pretend someone else was singing, of course :-) …but no, seriously, I think it’s a great song. Open Toes is the POS. It sounds like a bad parody of someone else’s song.

Really, from a business perspective, Love Story is less of a risk. It might not blow up on the radio, but it certainly won’t brand Katharine a joke in the way that Open Toes has the potential to.

Oh yeah, the fed tax exam? It’s always great when the prof tells you that something is definitely going to be on the exam, so you spend 50% of your time studying it…and it’s not on the exam. Of course, then you’re freaking out, thinking that it really WAS on the exam and you just somehow missed it.

  • tinawina

    pj: Thanks!

re kat: Yeah, I dunno about Love Story. They need to vary the formula a little since sticking to this sound isn’t working. But then again, the single is selling better than the album, so maybe they think people want to hear that kind of sound from her???? Oh well. Looks like she’s going right into the “waiting for album number 2″ category for me along with Taylor and Daughtry. I liked Elliot’s CD though, I thought it reflected his true sound.

  • griz

Has it been mentioned that Heaven Knows is likely to be Taylor’s next single? Check out this months JRecords newsletter.

  • NOLA

    Thanks griz!

  • emeralgem

Hi Griz… Good to see you posting, and I saw that earlier..
Just wondering…Why is it Taylor only has one single out there, and why have they waited so long to release this one?

EDIT.. We’re headed out to Na Go Ya for some chinese and Sushi.. Will check back in later..
Gotta go NOW so I can get back home before Idol starts..

  • MaryS-NJ

I love Heaven Knows. I don’t know if it’s Top 40 ready or not. I don’t care. I will gladly rock out to it in my car when I’m driving.

    P.s.:

    Hi peeps! Miss you.

  • http://www.idolicious.com Kat

Heaven Knows ain’t Top 40, but I could see it doing extremely well on A/C. But one never knows…

  • jpfan

Love Story is a nice retro song. I’m not even going to try and predict if it will be a hit. Blake’s performance seemed better suited for Simon’s other show – America’s Got Talent. No shocker tonight means good bye Chris and either Phil or Lakesha. I like both of them but not enough to vote since I’m still on Team Indifference.

  • Lu

    Hey Mary!!!

Interesting reading about second singles. I love Elliott’s single that he has out now but am really wondering what they’ll go with for the second. Wait fro You seems to be doing pretty well – getting decent top 40 play.

My office pool – well I picked Chris and Lakisha to go home. I had to flip a coin – it was between Chris/Lakisha and Chris/Phil. The one i feel sure about is Chris. The only words that came to my mind when he sang last night was “Bless his heart.” We southerners use that phrase in many ways. In this case it means “Your singing is pitiful. I hope it ends soon.”

  • griz

Just wonderingà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ¦Why is it Taylor only has one single out there, and why have they waited so long to release this one?

Hey emeraldgem – well JTFTW is still hanging tough on the AC charts -it’s been #20 for about 4 weeks, and they’re unlikely to release a second single before this one starts to weaken. It’s still gaining ‘add’ stations weekly. Would love to see him do Heaven Knows on the finale tho – a nice upbeat song!

5 days to go before my concert! wooo weeee!

  • MaryS-NJ

The only words that came to my mind when he sang last night was “Bless his heart.”

My Southern Grandma used to say that to me after a “discussion” about politics. :ponder_tb:

    :laugh_tb:

I think Nigel is doing damage control in his interview this week… we shall see!

  • madaboutu

griz………….five days!!!!! Did you see my post early about catching Taylor on Fox this morning, by accident? I even got it taped in time. Someone else has it on the boogie board in the media thread.

  • Tony

The one i feel sure about is Chris. The only words that came to my mind when he sang last night was à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Bless his heart.à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬

    Re: Kats single
I’m happy that it’s Love Story. It’s one of the only songs on the album that is pretty unique and doesn’t sound like something any young singer could put out. I think Open Toes is pretty good but the beat kind of annoys me, especially in the beginning. It sounds like a video game, same with Each Other… Love Story has more of a band feel to it and not manufactured on the synth pad at the studio.

    Moving on to last night…
Phil – Really, really good, he’s still someone I don’t think can/should win but he does have technically the best voice of the males this year. He’s still someone I could care less about if he leaves but he has given a couple great performances in the past 3 weeks and I commend him. I just have a feeling that the song choices are what is really making me like his performances.
Jordin – She’s 17 yall, can you believe it? Anyway, other then looking FABULOUS, her performance left me a little dry. The vocals were kinda just there, nothing to write home about. I have to say though, that last night was the first time I actually thought she looked like she could be a mainstream singer. I said this yesterday, she’s on the Kat Mcphee diet and is also starting to remind me of her in the way she acts as well. She looks great though.
Lakisha – I think it was a good vocal. The Simon kiss was cute and made me remember her, but other than that I really don’t have anything to say about it other than her outfit was hideous and made her look like a race car. Honestly, this girl has never interested me but I was happy to see she showed a little personality and wasn’t deadpan and lost the whole time.
Blake – I could say a million this about how many million shades of awesome this was but I won’t. I’ll simply say that aside from maybe a couple Elliott joints last year, this performance was the best I’ve ever seen on the entire series thus far. It was just great, he looked hot, the beat boxing was tight, the arrangement was well put together. Loved it. I hope he doesn’t win.
Chris – I agree that someone had to do this song. It wasn’t nearly as good as Daughtry’s version last year but I thought the vocals were good. His performing skills have grown a whole lot and I think tonight may be his final night on the stage but I’ve loved him throughout and I hope good things happen with him. I wanna hear some of those songs he’s written.
Melinda – Honestly, I don’t know why everyone though it was so amazing. I mean, she performed the hell out of the song. Maybe it’s because I personally don’t like the song. She was cute with Bon Jovi and in her video package but her vocals just weren’t all that interesting for me.

Anyway, Bottom three tonight – Jordin (they gotta do it sometime), Chris, and Phil with the latter two going home. I was also thinking about Lakisha but I have a feeling she’s gonna be around for another week. But who knows.

  • Metta

J.NM – Thanks for the recap! Glad you had a great time :)

MaryS – Glad to see you again. Don’t be a stranger!

  • Lu

I hope you’re wrong Afan… I want to win my office pool!!!!

Mary: My Southern Grandma used to say that to me after a à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“discussionà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ about politics.

So Mary – translation Bless your Heart in this case means… “Poor sweet Mary. She’s so dumb when it comes to politics.” :)

  • star

I think “Love Story” is a great choice for Kat’s new single! I haven’t heard a whole lot of her CD, but I did buy that one off iTunes a while back. It’s got a good summery, party kinda vibe.

The new mp3s are up on americanidol.com – I’m getting Blake’s right now! GO TEAM PLAID!

If by chance Jordin is put in the bottom three, it will be along with Chris and LaKisha.. The latter two will be going HOME..

  • cheese

I actually like “Love Story” too. I listened to most of the CD when it was released and that’s the only song that stuck out to me. (other than “Open Toes” which I downloaded for snark purposes)

I’ll believe that Taylor really will have another single when I see it. Do labels usually release singles from CDs that are way, way, way off the charts? I don’t remember if Bo had one after The Real Thing, which did much better on the radio than JTFTW.

  • SpenserJ

Afan, I hope you’re right about Lakisha, but I also hate to see Phil leave after doing so well recently too. Ugh, I hate the double boot. I cannot focus my “go home now” mojo on two people at once.

Oh, and on the new singles front: I do not believe I’ve ever heard this Love Story song of Kat’s. Maybe I’ll give it a listen so I can have an opinion. I think that Open Toes song is pretty crappy actually, but I agree with those of you who think it’s a better summer fit. Well, except for the fact that here in FL, we wear open toes all year long.

Hmm, Heavan Knows as Taylor’s next single? That would make me happy, happy, happy. Not because I think it’s going to tear up the charts or do anything signigicant for him sales wise, but just because it’s my favorite song on the CD and I’m pretty self centered.

  • dante

I loved Blake’s performance last night!!! He really took a big risk and I respect him for that.

I also thought Phil did a great job! Hope his last 2 weeks of good performances keep him in the competition.

Melinda also did a great job. I agreed she was like a young Tina Turner. I love her voice.

I am not liking Jordin as much as I did earlier.

Will be interesting to see who goes. I hope it is Chris and Lakisha.

Nice to see Griz and MaryS – we miss you guys!!!!!!

  • jersey

That’s it Spenser, rub it in. Open toes all year, pffft.

Oops, sorry about that Jersey. Didn’t mean to upset my northeastern friends :)

  • http://www.idolicious.com Kat

Well, except for the fact that here in FL, we wear open toes all year long.

Flip flops all year round :-)

Actually, I’m a shoe whore, and I love high heels, and hardly ever wear flip flops, or sneakers outside the gym. Except for exam week.

I don’t think that Bo had a second single after The Real Thing. I think his CD sold similarly to Taylor’s pretty well in the first couple weeks and then it kinda dropped quickly. He was shortly let go by the label (I think). I forsee Taylor’s career will take a similar turn. I know he has a contract for another album but I’m sure there is something written in the fine print like “if you don’t sell up to our standards its out the door.” He won’t have a problem getting signed by someone else though. I highly doubt there will be another single off this effort considering there wasn’t even a video made. Maybe he’ll have another single in a couple years when he makes another (probably better) album on a different label. I still sat reunite with LIMBO put out an album and tour around with widespread panic, but thats just me.

  • B

Bo did have a second single off The Real Thing…”U Make Me Better” but it didn’t make a dent on the charts, which would explain why no one remembers it.

  • jpfan

Elliott’s second single should be One Word for Top 40. They should release Movin On and I’m the Man to the HAC charts. I think his audience is more HAC but Wait for You has the potential to be a hit on the Top 40 charts. The problem is does having a hit record sell CDs. Kat did well with her single but it didn’t really sell her album.

  • griz

AFan – if JRecords wasn’t thinking about another single, why is it listed on their website? BTW, he is under contract for 3 albums, not 2.

Further, dropping an AI winner is extremely unlikely before their contract is up. I would be shocked. Dropping a runner up is not unlikely – Diana, Justin and Bo were. Difference. And even tho Taylor’s sales haven’t matched the other AI winners, it still did better, by far, than the rest of the group, sans Daughtry.

And my opinion – when and if Taylor does go to another label down the road and he is given the freedom to make an album exactly the way he wants, then, I’d be all for that, starting today. The main thing is that he gets the chance to spread his wings in the style he wants – and whichever label will allow him to do that, then I say go for it. Doesn’t matter to me which label he’s on, to be honest.

He is now a solo artist – not associated with LiMBO anymore – there’s no ‘going back’. He has enough cloat to do as he pleases and playing bars is history. It’s on to bigger and better gigs and events.

  • JustSomeGuy

The problem with Open Toes as the next single – the music in that song gets a ahead of Kat, vocally she can’t keep up so no where is there a good live version of that song.
When she was doing live performances, there are a couple of very good live versions of Love Story.

Thanks for your insight Afan. In keeping with your theory on Taylor and Bo, do you think the record company will give Kat another record deal. Especially since Bo and Kat were both second place finishers and Bo sales were way better than hers..

  • http://www.idolicious.com Kat

Oh wow, I just saw that YouTube clip of Katharine “dancing” (read: hiking up her skirt) while “singing” Open Toes. Well, at least she knows what works for her, I guess.

And my opinion – when and if Taylor does go to another label down the road and he is given the freedom to make an album exactly the way he wants, then, Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢d be all for that, starting today.

ITA. It’ll suck if he gets dropped by Sony, but if the end goal is Taylor getting to make the type of music that Taylor wants to make, I’ll support whatever result that gets him there. :)

Oh yeah..Season Six. Wow, these “man on the street” interviews are hella lame. This is the first Wednesday night I’ve been home to catch the show in its entirety; usually I FF through the BS. Ugh.

  • Ladybug

griz. Glad to see you drop in and have a terrific time at Taylor’s concert, as if you need to be told THAT. :happy_tb:

I was happy with tonights results.

do you think the record company will give Kat another record deal. Especially since Bo and Kat were both second place finishers and Bo sales were way better than hers..

I personally don’t, they can easily get her to record a standards type of album, and i see them doing that before they kick her out the door. Over it got a little farther both on radio and charts then I thought it would do, and I think they’ll take that into account.

  • griz

Hey Ladybug! Thanks – I’m already starting the engines! haha! Seriously I have to find some recording device…. ;)

  • AFan

    nevermind

  • Nostradamas

LOL! I guess Blake the Fake has to be VFTW’s next pick…..LOL!!

Maybe VFTW will get him the final prize and he can sell even less CD’s than their pick of last season….

  • griz

I’m happy with tonight’s ejectees. I’m even happier smoking hawt Taylor had his clip shown tonight… did you hear the screams from the audience half way through his speech? Gawd, I can’t wait for the finale!

  • madaboutu

griz………..how did you see AI already? Do you have satellite? Where is he placed in the program timewise? I am going to be on the cellcert from Anaheim. (a place where both you AND I should be tonite too BTW) Dang!

mad – I saw the download on Gypsee’s site.. go catch it! He’s on right after Bon Jovi’s performance toward the end of the show.

OMG, need details, details, stat! :rolleyes_wp:

  • amys

After Bon Jovi performed and chatted with Ryan, they moved to Taylor’s taped comments (no introduction, no segue…just BAM, there he was). I think it was taped the day he was Regis and Kelly (Trump as guest host) because he had the same shirt and hair was gelled (sorry for noticing…!)

  • sammy

Now the competition gets really interesting. Any of the four left could win. I think it will depend a lot on their performances.

  • madaboutu

Thanks griz and amys………isn’t modern technology wonderful? No wonder no one watches TV anymore. You can pick and choose what segment of anything to watch. Oh joy!

Actually after he’s done in Seattle, he has the Summer Concert Series to do on Jay Leno (May 16) and probably the idol finale on May 23… in addition to his summer tour, he’ll be on a parallel book tour, so there’s no rest for the weary for Mr. Hicks….
