    hicks review

A sellout crowd of 2,100 fans came out to the Von Braun Centerà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s Concert Hall Tuesday night to see if the Birmingham singer they pulled and voted for in last yearà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“American Idolà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ was just as fun and entertaining in person as he was on television.

    Eight Men Off
On ”American Idol,” the last all-male semifinal show on Tuesday mainly leaves us eager for the women’s performances on Wednesday

I don’t know what’s freaking me out more right now: The possibility that I had a mildly telepathic moment with Simon Cowell tonight, or the sudden realization that I might be an even crankier crankypants than American Idol’s notorious British judge….

They hoped on wings and a song
Friends, fans and family crowd the Hooters in Chesapeake to cheer on local Chris Richardson.

When “American Idol” contestant Chris Richardson stepped to the microphone Tuesday night, the Hooters on Battlefield Boulevard shook with screams and cheers.

That should come as no surprise: Richardson – a proud son of Chesapeake and an employee of the “delightfully tacky” restaurant – seems more popular at the Hooters than its famous chicken wings……

    Idolized ice cream

It scares me when even ice cream starts to get in on the reality show craze, but I’m throwing this one in for all you American Idol fans out there.

That’s right, this is your chance to be as mean as Simon Cowell.

Edy’s Slow Churned Ice Cream has introduced five new American Idol-inspired flavors you can vote on. There’s Choc ‘N Roll Caramel, Hollywood Cheesecake, Soulful Sundae Cone, Take the Cake and Triple Talent.

Everyone who votes will be entered to win prizes, including a high-definition plasma TV, an American Idol ice cream party for 75 or the grand prize, a trip to the Idol finale show.

Go to http://slowchurned.com to cast your vote. The winning flavor will become part of Edy’s permanent lineup. The four losers will be voted out of the freezer case.

Chris Richardson May Have Gotten Most Votes

Chris Richardson apparently won over America. According to DialIdol.com, which had an amazingly accuracy rate last season (though it hasn’t been as impressive thus far), suggests that Richardson received the most votes Tuesday night in American Idol’s male performance show, which will determine who heads to the Final 12 (only 6 of the guys will).

DialIdol.com has Jared Cotter, Phil Stacey and surprisingly, Sundance Head, all with the lowest number of votes. Head for the past two weeks was the biggest vote getter and among the favorites to win of the males. It is possible he turned off many loyalists with his rendition of a Pearl Jam song. Pearl Jam songs after all tend to depress.

…Ya know I’ve seen the Antonella Barba nudie pics, and it leaves me wonderingà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ¦Why does every no talent, marginally attractive woman have naked pictures and/or a sex tape now? I mean EVERYONE has at least one of these now, and it seems like they always get leaked out. I mean, if the reason is you’re sending them to your boyfriend or something then maybe I get it. But most of these girls, for no logical reason, just have photos of them flashing their snatch while covered in whipped cream or videos of them fondling the Puerto Rican pool boy. What is the reasoning behind this?! In ten years are you gonna pull these things out and show them off to the neighbours at parties in some perverse slideshow? “Well we had the yacht for the weekend, so naturally it made sense to videotape ourselves blowing cocaine up each others’ asses. Oh, and here comes the ball gag! My, that was certainly a crazy Arbour Day.”

Still, it does give us hot girls doing insane sexual acts for free so I guess I should be gratefulà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ¦Although she’s not really all that attractive really. I mean come on, go to any college campus in California and you’ll find at least 23 girls who look like Antonella and at least half of them are probably slutty enough to sleep with you if you buy them a drink. So I guess what I’m trying to say is, stop obsessing over this Antonella Barba, and go out and bang an Antonella Barba of your own. Because pretty soon that’s all we’re gonna have, an entire nation of slutty women with no discernable talent whoring themselves out for fame and fortune, an entire nation of Antonella Barba’s. Thank you Paris Hilton, it is thanks to your shining example of sluttiness leading to success that we can look forward to a whole generation of ubersluts doing crazy things on camera. God bless America!

Ya know, the scary part is I’m not really sure if I’m being sarcastic. Hmmm.

    ‘American Idol’: ‘All mixed up’?

    Recapping Tuesday night’s “American Idol”:

The Good: Blake Lewis proved he knows himself better than anyone else in the competition by dialing up 311′s “All Mixed Up,” the perfect song choice for his funky, beatbox-influenced style. Chris Richardson succeeded with his stylized take on Keith Urban’s “Tonight I Wanna Cry,” Brandon Rogers had reason to celebrate after doing Rare Earth proud and Chris Sligh overcame poor source material (DC Talk? Really?) and won Randy Jackson’s “vocal prize of the night” for his assured rendition of “Wanna Be Loved.”….

    à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‹Idolà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ Chatter: Wake me when ità ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s over

    Wow. Tuesday nightà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s menà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s Top 8 show was probably the most tedious night of à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“American Idolà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ve ever watched.

Ità ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s not that anyone was really bad (not even Sanjaya); ità ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s just that most of them were deathly dull. It really ended up being a show full of lackluster, yawn-inducing performances bookended by a couple of noteworthy offerings from the likes of Blake Lewis and Chris Sligh. These guys had better watch their backs when they start competing with the women next week….

    ….And there will be a mind-boggling announcement about à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“one of the most important events in à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‹American Idolà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ historyà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ on Thursday nightà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s show! AI: Snoring with the homies

    Dudes – what happened?

The first week of Top 24-ness was not kind to the male members of the “American Idol” family. Some were off-key. Some were boring. Some managed to be both off-key and boring, which is like burning old, stuck-together white rice – If it wasn’t especially

Good songs can give anyone ‘McPheever’

…Being that it seems that everyone has an album coming out after ‘Idol’, McPhee’s is a good one to pick up for the simple fact that she has a voice that she must share with the public.

I don’t mind that the album has an R&B quality sound to it and she does show or, in this case, hear some swagger, that is opened up by McPhee.

I say that if your mother can get attention because she is a vocal instructor, the star is within you and that is what McPhee has.

Now, all she has to do is just be as good as former “American Idol” winners Kelly Clarkson and Carrie Underwood and she will be on her way…

How do you think our local ”Idol” performed?

    Chris Richardson again pleased the American Idol judges Tuesday night, performing Keith Urbanà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Tonight I Wanna Cry.à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬

Sporting a military jacket, a graphic T-shirt and jeans, the Chesapeake resident opened his recital perched atop a stool; in a preceding video diary, he revealed that he à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“was a little chunkyà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ in his college years and has since lost 40 pounds.

Although the sudden sex symbol drew shrieks from female fans mid-song, we wonà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t know until Thursday whether heà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s still in the game. While we wait, Joe Fu, a DJ from Energy 106.1, shares his thoughts on how Richardson did……..

    May the worst candidate win
Web site urges ‘American Idol’ voters to back the least likely to succeed

In the democracy that is “American Idol,” Vote For the Worst is a swing state filled with protest voters — contrarians who campaigned for Kellie Pickler last year, when they knew the better singer was Katherine McPhee.

For “Worsters,” as they call themselves on the group’s Internet site (www.votefortheworst.com), casting ballots for the Idol least likely to succeed is more than just a joke.

It’s a way to fight the power (i.e., Hollywood TV producers).

“It’s obvious how the producers manipulate the audience into voting for who they want,” says Monica Liberto, a member from Edison. “It’s my way of standing up and saying, ‘I’m not going to take what you dish out.’”….

    Taylor Hicks Exclusive

It was a sold out crowd Sunday as the Soul Patrollman himself took to the stage. In an exclusive interview he told me what to expect from his latest album “Taylor Hicks”.

“Modern Sould Music … I like to call it high impact aerobics,” says Hicks.

    – High impact indeed, especially with all the fancy footwork to keep his fans excited.

“It’s an energetic show I’ve been doing this for a long time and I got this opportunity and my band is awesome adn it’s high energy,” says Hicks.

He says this year it’s a releif to sit on the sidelines and watch the American Idol competitition. So far, his favorite is Blake Lewis.

“I kinda like the B-Box guy. He has an interesting mojo,” says the Soul Patrollman.

Could his mojo be as interesting as the “Fro Patroll” Chris Sligh?

“I wish him all the best of luck in the competition and on a hot humid day I could be a part of the fro patroll,” says Hicks.

No Thrills – so far – from Idols’ R&B Clones

“This group of singers has a chance to redeem themselves”, Slezak says. “Right now I would say it is gonna to be tough for them to outdo last season. But I think there are enough good singers that it could be as good as last season.”

“What’s missing on this Idol”, Slezak says is “a real mix of different types.”

“A lot of guys are working a sort of Justin Timberlake-y, Usher-y vibe, and a lot of women are sort of working an old school Gladys Knight, Aretha kind of vibe”, he said. “I was surprised by the fact that there aren’t really any legitimate rock singers, that there doesn’t seem to be anyone who is a country singer.”

What could American Idol surprise possibly be?

American Idol is promising a big surprise this Thursday.

So what the heck could be so big?

    ***

At the beginning of the season I thought it would be that producers would score U2 as a musical guest and that Idol hopefuls could take turns fronting the band.

Now in this article, there’s a weird Idol-Bono connection with talk about the Idols going to Africa. Whaaaaa?

Maybe the surprise is that the Idols will perform a Jihad week live from Iraq.

You can bet plenty of American soldiers would become suicide bombers if that were the case……

Reality TVs Portrayal of Women Exposed in Lecture

Founder and Executive Director of Women in Media and News Jennifer Pozner spoke on Wednesday, Feb. 28 to initiate a discussion on how women are being portrayed on television, specifically reality television.
    à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“The à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‹money shotà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ of reality TV is the humiliation of women,à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ said Pozner in Vance 105…

…à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“If women are the whores then the networks are the pimps,à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ said Pozner.

There are three things, Pozner said, that reality TV tells viewers: women need male validation, women are stupid and women are gold-diggers.

With all of her examples, Pozner provided the 20 or so onlookers with clips from various reality shows, many of which depicted women as à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“commodities.à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬

Pozner showed clips from shows like American Idol, Newlyweds, Americaà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s Next Top Model and Are You Hot?, where one judge repeatedly said à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“get comfortable with my flaw-finder,à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ referring to the laser-pointer he used to point out flaws on arguably perfect women.

Pozner said Newlyweds depicted Jessica Simpson as stupid. In American Idol, Simon Cowell, one of the judges, is known for telling women with great singing voices to lose weight if they want to make it in the business…

    American Idol: The Not-So-Great 8

Yes… we are down to one hour. I could not be happier, but it does seem like this season is just flying by.
Paula’s outfit was downright hideous. Her hair and face actually looked cute, but her shirt was just butt-ugly. It had flowers, it had sparkles, it had the ability to cause seizures in small children. Doesn’t she have a stylist?

Travis Tritt was in the house. Like all people in the “American Idol” house, he had something to plug. He has a new album. Since Randy Jackson is the producer, he must have been legally binded to appear. Here are the rest of tonight’s highlights…

‘IDOL’ MAKING UP RULES AS IT GOES ALONG

…Davis went on to find Broadway success, and is currently singing in the musical “Rent.” She’s hinting that she wouldn’t mind a monetary settlement from the show, which is absolutely the wrong thing to say. The ground she’s standing on would look a lot more firm if she simply went forward and saying “I don’t want money, I just want someone to explain the difference.”

“American Idol” is a family show, no question about it. Obviously, the show producers would love it if all their contestants came to the stage fresh from feeding the hungry and building homes for Hurricane Katrina victims. But these singers are at varying stages of life — some are wide-eyed and 16, others are married parents, aged 27 or 28.

And the show is kidding itself and its audience to pretend that the music scene that its contestants desperately want to enter is just one step away from the convent. When Bo Bice’s drug arrests became public, savvy observers laughed at the idea that a guy who’s been playing music in bars for years was expected to have never come in contact with drugs.

It’s not that Fox should let a serial killer into its tidy little contest — no one’s asking for that. And most people don’t think Barba’s photos (again, assuming they are of her) are worth kicking her out over, either.

But if the show wants this Barba-Davis issue to go away, someone at Fox needs to step up and address the issue. This is very unlikely to happen, considering how secretive the show is about things such as vote totals and phone-line glitches, but here’s how I’d like it to go down…

American Idol guys fail to present again

The guys of American Idol seem to have a theme – mediocrity. Yes they once again failed to deliver and will probably be shown up as losers overall when the girls perform tomorrow. We will apparently get treated to a performance by Carrie Underwood and HUGE NEWS on Thursday (my guess for the HUGE NEWS is details of the songwriting competition)….

    American Idol boys: They suck

Whatà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s the difference between my dogà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s most recent bowel movement in my backyard and the boys on this seasonà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s American Idol? In four days the dog crap will stop stinking.

Instead of hearing and seeing what Simon Cowell dubs à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“The wow factor,à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ we were subjected to something far more sinister: The suck factor…

…Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢m wondering if the big twist/surprise that Idol is promising on Thursday night is that theyà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢re gonna send all these idiots home in one fell swoop. Now THAT would be must-see-TV…

Jennifer Hudson has her day in Chicago

Since being booted from “American Idol,” Jennifer Hudson has won a Golden Globe, a Screen Actors Guild prize and an Academy Award for best supporting actress. On Tuesday, the 25-year-old star of the movie “Dreamgirls” added one more award to the collection – she got her own day in her hometown.

Mayor Richard Daley proclaimed Tuesday “Jennifer Hudson Day” to honor the budding star, whose Cinderella story took her from Chicago’s South Side to the Hollywood A-list.

“She’s an inspiration to everyone who has a dream,” Daley told hundreds of screaming fans. “People told her `You can’t.’ And she said `I can.”‘……

    A powerhouse on overdrive
Review: Belting it out all the way, Christina Aguilera entertains in Anaheim but fails to add nuance to her mighty roar.

…What Aguilera has failed to learn from the forebears she somewhat emulates is nuance, something she desperately needs to incorporate into her vocal approach, lest she remain one-dimensional. She is undeniably a powerhouse vocalist à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’ and as with Celine Dion it’s a marvel that such a tremendous sound comes out of such a small, slender frame. But where her heroes knew how to hold back à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’ when to play it cool to counterbalance the times when they’d really let loose à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’ Aguilera aims only to blow you back.

There is scarcely a song in her catalog that doesn’t resort to clenched-teeth grit or a series of wildly melismatic runs à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’ or both à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’ and in person that tendency is amplified at least tenfold. Yet, as Randy Jackson often rightly tells “American Idol” contestants, such flashy moves aren’t always required to be convincing. Sometimes it’s better to lay off the dazzle and just sing a song as-is…

    “Idol” creator goes blue-collar

Fox has ordered a half-hour drama pilot from “American Idol” creator Simon Fuller.

The primetime soap deals with real-life issues of blue-collar families. Fuller created the project with veteran British writer-producer Mal Young (“Doctor Who”). The two will executive produce.

Fuller is also developing a reality show for Fox based on the exploits of former Spice Girl Victoria Beckham, who is moving to Los Angeles with her football-star husband, David Beckham. Fuller previously managed the Spice Girls.

    Bring back the clapometer!
If phone-ins are banned, will Saturday night viewers become a disenfranchised TV nation – and is that such a bad thing after all?

…Maybe they’ll carry on without the audience vote – install some kind of pop politburo that’ll decide on your behalf who’s going through. American Idol still seems to do pretty well here even though British audiences can’t vote for any of them. Most of these Saturday night shows are really just versions of 1970s variety shows, revamped with audience participation technology to ramp up the profits – we didn’t get to phone in on Opportunity Knocks…

‘Nashville Star’ winner hopes to sing with her brother

…”We were both standing there, and we said to each other, ‘Can you believe this?’ We really couldn’t,” Angela said by phone from Nashville, a little more than 12 hours after her victory. “Never in our wildest dreams could we have foreseen ourselves being on the show together, much less being the final two. It’s been really cool.”

As the weeks passed, and the Hackers advanced, there was some grumbling around Internet circles that viewers were keeping the brother and sister in the competition because it made for a good story, but in reality, they were the strongest singers.

“I hope people à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ¦ cast their votes for us because they liked us as artists,” Angela, 29, said. “We haven’t been working in a factory and decided, ‘Hey, let’s go enter this karaoke contest.’ We’ve both been pursuing a musical career. This was a vehicle for us. I looked at it as exposure.”

With her victory, Angela won a new truck and a contract with Warner Brothers Records. One thing that’s becoming increasingly evident is that her little brother is probably going to play a part in that first record.

“We’re pushing to sing together. I don’t see the point in hiring a background singer to do a part I know my brother is going to knock out of the park. I hope and pray we can convince the label of that.”…

    Idolatry 101
Tips for newcomers to America’s favorite television diversion

America, why do you love American Idol?

The nation’s most popular singing competition draws 30 million or more viewers a week who tune in to see a little bit of singing and a whole lot of inane banter between host Ryan Seacrest and judges Paula Abdul, Randy Jackson and Simon Cowell.

Cowell consistently tells contestants to be “distinctive and unique.” Sure, some people from the show have gone on to have best-selling albums and to win Grammy Awards, but we dare you to point out anything original about the music of say, Clay Aiken, or the vocal stylings of Carrie Underwood.

At the same time, Cowell reminds singers to pick songs that will have mass appeal to middle America, which typically means some sort of upbeat power ballad where things build into a sea of schmaltz.

Think Celine Dion at her worst and you get the idea. Feel free to shudder.

If you’re like this writer and can only tune in for a few seconds at a time before hitting the remote, here are some fast facts to keep you in the water cooler conversations, to impress your Idol-loving coworkers……

LisaB…thanks for the article on the Hackers. Since Idol is so bad this year, I’ve been searching everywhere for any news on what they will be doing now. Especially Zac. I don’t know about the record label putting Zac as a background singer to Angela though. It would be sentimentally nice, but he has so much talent, he’s a stand alone artist if I’ve ever seen one. • thedingoateyobaby

OK, are these kids TRYING to be painfully shitty or does it just come naturally? Im mean last nights Idol was absolutely the worst group ever assembled in one place onIdol IMO. Blake, the kid is talented but I aint gettin’ it and never heard of the song so I didnt get into it. Of them all I liked Sligh best of all and was able to hear a small snippet of what could be a really soulful voice. Sligh and Blake were the only two that were decent. The rest can all go home. I would love to know the numbers for the voting this year. I bet its a record low.

Sweet t, that picture you posted of Taylor last night, well, freaking glorious I tell ya. I just saw it and to everyone who welcomed me home, thanks bunny bunches. Mass, you touch my bunny feet and I’ll get Mr. Greenjeans ta kick yer ass.

Since I have no heart in this season, I think I would laugh my ass off if he were to win. OMG how damn funny would that be.

There ya go Simon! Ya got a hawt one there!

  • Ladybug

That is one problem with the boys S6 for sure. They are all so bad that even the ones that are just sort of good, like Blake, get praised. The good looking ones can’t sing. The ugly ones can. Topsy turvy year.

And I am having this hideous image of Chris Sligh, bald, in my head. Gosh, I wish he hadn’t told that story! It is like the worst part of a horror film running over and over in my head.

I already know if I miss an episode of this, I won’t be sorry.

  • thedingoateyobaby

I donà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t know about the record label putting Zac as a background singer to Angela though.

Oh Miss, I hope thats not true cause I so agree with you. Zac Hacker is a phenomenal talent. What a waste to use him as a backup singer when he is so talented and gifted an artist. Im not worried about him though, I think Nashville knows they just found a keeper and that song of his is gonna sell very well.

The bar was raised so high last year that it was always going to be difficult to match or surpass.

    SOUNDCHECK – CHRIS DAUGHTRY

I watched your Idol audition again. I can’t believe that Simon thought you lacked charisma. Did you want to smack him when he said that?

Yeah. But he was cool. Now we’re like buddies. He was critical at first and then he was on my side 100 percent. It made me shape up.

Entertainment Weekly has called you “sex on a stick”. What do you think about that?

I don’t know what sex on a stick is. I’ll take it. I think it is cool. I never looked at myself that way. I’m glad I don’t. It’s flattering. I guess I was always sex on a stick to my wife, but it’s surprising to hear it from other people. You can’t let it go to your head because there is always Brad Pitt.

American Idol’s Blake Lewis: Reintroducing me to Keane and Jamiroquai

I hate to admit it, but Kim makes me watch American Idol. No, it’s not like she ties me to the couch cushions while she hits play on the DirecTivo, but without more than one Sat receiver in the house I have only two choices: watch with my wife or hide.

American Idol bores me to death for the most part. It has its moments where it’s tolerable but I usually passively watch the TV while making grumbling noises and typing away furiously on the keyboard.

Kim was enamored with Taylor Hicks last season and is one of the few American Idol watchers that hasn’t dumped *the* Idol after the show ended to anxiously await the next. She even dragged me out to a Taylor Hicks and Little Memphis Blues Orchestra show at O’Gara’s that I must admit was quite tolerable.

This season has raised very little interest for most everyone, me especially. Everyone pretty much sucks. Even Blake Lewis, of whom I’m about to rave, can’t sing worth a good god damn. Even my mother, who enjoys the show, told me that it was so bad she couldn’t keep watching.

Anyway, enough of that. Blake Lewis of American Idol has turned my opinion that everyone on the show is a joke. Yes, I have stated that he can’t sing worth a shit, but he can pick songs that are young, updated, and IMHO, cool….

‘Idol’ recap: Top 8 perform (badly)

I was at an event the other night where they showed us an edited version of last year’s Idol finale and I found myself wondering: Is there a single guy this season on the level of Taylor Hicks, Elliott Yamin or Chris Daughtry?

    Short answer — Nope.

Maybe Tuesday (March 6) night’s American Idol performance episode will feature a breakout performance from one of the Top Eight Men…

    Singer: Blake Lewis
    Song: “All Mixed Up”

My Take: Will Jimmy Walker Blue, Blake’s redneck alter ego cost him votes in the key Southern States? He probably should. This is another entirely unexpected artist selection from Blake, somehow trying to tailor 311 to the Idol format. The vocal turntablism is fun as usual, but it’s just a low-key mimeograph of the original. This is the first time I’ve felt that Blake was basically coming across as the lead singer of the kind of band that plays frat parties and really wants to do its own stuff, but has to whip out a few lackadaisical covers for the drunken masses…….

I listen to an urban morning show and the dj called AI “wack” this year. That’s not a compliment. They also interviewed Frenchy to get hertake on the Scandal and were pushing the racist angle (offering to call Rev. Al for her.) They also said idol pimps people and last year it was “white guy” year and this was “black girl” year. But didn’t sound too into the black girls this year either.

Comparing the guys last night to 4 day old dog crap. Harsh but so on the money. Prediction, since all suck they keep cute ones – Jared/brandon and hideous Sundance and Phil leave.

Chris Daughtry: I ran into a few people who bought tickets for like $500. I don’t even think the Stones get that.

Why does Chris keep saying stupid things like that? He’s bigger than the Stones now? No. And do a quick web search and you will find stories about Stones’ tickets going for much more than $500. And they are playing HUGE stadiums.

From the same interview: With his publicist on the line and steering the interview away from questions about American Idol

Maybe the publicist should start giving Chris some lessons on how to answer questions instead of trying to prevent anybody from knowing that Chris was ever on AI.

BTW Last night, AI was pretty boring. This year, it’s going to be like Survivor where the organized team picks of the clueless team week after week (with the boys being the clueless team). Can we please have a stylist help them pick their songs? Most of these guys haven’t a clue.

No, its not that last season’s talent was so fantastic and bountiful that this years Idol is a disaster. Its that the judges eliminated some very very good singers. Its their fault that this year stinks. Every year, Idol has amazing talent and a lot of it. Not this year. The fault of this bummer season of Idol falls squarely on the shoulders of the judges.

I still say that Tami Gosnell would have been a great character to watch and to listen to. She had a powerhouse of a voice.

One more thing, who in gawd’s name picks the songs these kids sing? OMG they are absolutely horrific. I mean, if I dont FEEL the song I cant get into the music or the voice. Every single one of them from last night sang a crappy song. Its not about what YOU like at this point as a contestant…its about what you can sell to the American public and there is no doubt that this years voting will be the lowest ever. I say that because this bunny voted every freaking season and this will be the very first that I dont cast a vote.

Kirsten, the analogy about Survivor and Idol was right on the money. I was a devoted Survivor fanatic until they “jumped the shark” about 4 seasons ago. After wehats his name and whats her name got married from Survivor, I stopped watching. Its boring, its predictable and its not a show I bother to watch anymore. i think thats its possible that Idol jumped the shark this year.

I think that last years Idol was so unpredictable not only for us the viewers but for the PTB that they decided to give themselves more power if you will by choosing more predictable and “manageable” kids. I think last year they were blindsided by both Chris and Taylor who were dead set in their ways and much more seasoned than many of these kids. More stubborn too. Horror of horrors, Chris was booted off and they were stuck with “Barbie” and crazy man Taylor Hicks at the end knowing that Hicks was about to steamroll his way over her. There would be no train wreck, he would just bulldoze his way to the win.

OMG to be a fly on the wall in some of THOSE meetings!

  • Kirsten

Okay, we were debating this last night. Did Brandon hit bad notes? Here is what Michael Slezak from EW had to say:

“To be fair, the kid [Sanjaya] probably hit fewer wonky notes than Brandon”

Actually, Michael is on fire today. Here is what else he wrote about Brandon:

“By this point, Brandon has made it abundantly clear why he’s a backup singer: Every time he reaches for a big note, I’m reminded of ABC Sports’ ”agony of defeat” ski jumper. There’s that momentary ”Wow! He’s gonna go there!” exhilaration, followed by the musical equivalent of a violent, ugly body slam into a snowy mountainside.”

At least this is going to be a very snarky season.

  • Smiley

I was completely bored by the performances last night. After the first few notes, I was cringing. Chris S stayed on key pretty well, but I just can’t stand his stage presence (or lack of). He is so awkward. Most of the others were pitiful. The judges tell them to raise the level but I don’t think they can. I am afraid this is as good as they get. Yuck.

    She’s 5, And She’s An Online Star
Little Nia Frazier Sings Up A Storm On YouTube And Catches Eye Of Celebs, 2 Million Viewers

Watch out, American Idol. She may only be in kindergarten, but 5-year-old Nia Frazier has become an online singing sensation, attracting millions of fans — and even celebrities — to her videos on YouTube…

…While there are about 30 videos of Nia on YouTube, her rendition of the Earth, Wind & Fire hit “Can’t Find Love” has attracted over 2 million viewers. Later this month, she’s actually set to perform with Earth, Wind & Fire in Las Vegas, the New York Daily News reports.

Mary J. Blige is also a big fan. “We sought out Nia, four year interpreter of Mary J Blige songs, and asked her to star in this commercial for Mary J. Blige’s new album,” MJBlige.com says…

I think the show (as a show) jumped the shark last season. The Simon/ Ryan/Paula crap felt old last year. Usually reality shows fade in Season 5 and that was expected for idol. However the fantastic talent they had overshadowed the show. The idols last year were BIGGER than the show itself. This year is the jump the shark year. Imagine 12 weeks of this. It’ll be slow death. I’m especially not looking forward to Bon Jovi and Martina McBride on a show with no rock/country singers. It’ll be like root canal without novocaine. And Lakeisha singing Gwen Stefani. Oi vey. I hope the big surprise tomorrow is that they starting the show over again with different singers.

  • squishy

I am actually shocked at the praise the judges gave Chris R. of his rendition of “Tonight I Wanna Cry”. Ace, who isn’t the best singer in the world, sang that Keith Urban song ten times better than Chris R. did.

I am convinced that had Ace tried out this year, he may have been the number 1 guy.

  • Smiley

Squishy, I was surprised too. I thought he was nasally and had really poor tone quality. I guess in order to save the show they have to give some decent comments. I mean, everyone is talking about how bad this year is. They are trying to make some performances seem better than they were.

  • IGetCranked

I think the guys that were cut last year were head and shoulders above this group. Think about Gedeon and Patrick in this group. This is a shame. Heck I even enjoyed Bobby more than these guys. I thought he had a fun personality and a good tone even if he did pick an odd song.

  • db

    Good morning. :)

Last night’s performances sucked in almost every possible way. I found myself enjoying Sligh the most last night – for the first time ever. Sanjaya savagely murdered John Mayer’s “Waiting For The World To Change” and Suckdance turned Pearl Jam’s “Jeremy” into a pop song. It’s sad when the show is memorable for its crappy performances.

  • J. NM

Last night’s show was the most boring episode of Idol I’ve ever watched. Terrible song choices, lackluster singing etc. etc. Working on the crossword puzzle was more exciting.

I agree with you all. Idol has officially jumped the shark.

Now I might have been a tad bit overinvested last year (Soul Patrol tattoo anyone?) and I knew this year would be a bit sad for me, but tedious? I wasn’t expecting that.

But, like the addict I am, I will continue to watch. *sigh*

Thank you Lisa for the Hacker article. Nashville Star grabbed me from the first episode this year. Those Hackers have some serious soul.

  • http://blog.syracuse.com/idolthoughts/ foxydonna

I did something last night that I have never done before. I recorded the show, and then watched it back a little later, skimming through the commercials and even some of the cutsie little “secrets.” I just don’t care, and that makes me sad. They over-sanitized this group and it’s fallen flat as a pancake.

  • IGetCranked

J.NM, I’ll continue to watch too but only because I want to know who everyone is talking about and to snark.

  • Ladybug

I think Sundance choosing the ULTIMATE downer song, “Jeremy” was a total stunner. I mean, could anyone make a WORSE choice? Ever? And to top it off, he sang it horribly.

He needs to be sent home simply for a crime against the sensibilities of humanity. Better yet. Chunk him and bring on his Dad, Roy Head. I bet Mr. Head could outsing and outperform any of those kids this season.

  • Masshole

Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢m wondering if the big twist/surprise that Idol is promising on Thursday night is that theyà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢re gonna send all these idiots home in one fell swoop Monkbot
    ***********************************************

Ya’ know, I was thinking something exactly like that. Seems they are going to have to do something to shake it up or Idol ice cream isn’t gonna sell well. The big prize is going to the show?? I want the TeeVee.

Maybe they would throw a bottom four vote getters off, instead of by gender?

I think the screw-up is in the prelims. They are looking for selected “types” to present to the audience, some bad, some good, some for the young, some for the older, some fat, some skinny.

They keep this up I’m gonna fly out and jump on stage. Now THAT would be sorry.

  • jpfan

I’m surprised to see Chris R ahead of Blake on Dialidol. But I guess they’re all within the margin of error.

When it gets closer to the date, I’d like to do a predict the first week of sales for Elliott.
How many did Kimberly Locke sell her first week? Isn’t she the only other idol 3rd place finisher to release a CD? Not up on my idol history. If E can sell 30,000 -50,0000 K the first week, I think that would be pretty cool since he’s doing it without the AI seal of approval. Let’s see if he can attract the crucial non AI fans. When I checked his My Space yesterday to see if Train Wreck was there, it had over 18,000 hits. That’s the most I’ve seen. Keeping fingers crossed. Ciao.

OMG, what a FANTASTIC idea! Shake it up, make it sizzle. If not ALL of them then at least replace 4 of them with people they eliminated either the judges did or like last weeks bootee, the audience did. Im willing to bet none of these sorry asses are getting 100 votes apiece. Im hard pressed to believe that perhaps for Sanjaya, who may be getting the persistent vote of the tweens, the rest are languishing in very low vote counts.

  • Easy

I’m not surprised that Blake Lewis is Taylor’s favorite this year….and I could definitely see the two of them on stage together.

  • Ladybug

Agreed, Mass. Sundance is a total turn-off for me, but, then, with this group, join the club.

Idol better do something soon to shake up this mess, I agree, Dingo. The buzz is being picked up everywhere what a bad season this is. And, despite what some complain about here, it is being compared to last year’s show in the press a LOT. I do not remember that being a problem with S5 being compared to S4 in any way.

Yep Ladybug, everywhere you go the show is being panned for its absurd lack of interesting talent. You had a show that in every other season, had powerhouses of talent not to mention stand out personalities. This year I see neither at this point. They all seem to be playing the game very slickly. Its not spontaneous anymore.

I swear, if Grey’s Anatomy were on the opposite channel or any other worthwhile TV show, I would watch that and sporadically flip on commercial to Idol.

Oh, I completely agree with this. Pearl Jam should not be sung on AI. It’s like singing a Nirvana song on AI. (Has anyone ever done that, actually??)

Oh, and a random music recommendation: Scott Matthews from the UK. He reminds me a bit of Paolo Nutini, except slightly more acoustic and bluesy.

PS: Hot!Dave, if you don’t mind downloads and paying a bit extra because of the exchange rate, you can download his album from 7digital. :)

I’ve been letting the DVR record this, while I actually try to get some stuff done around the house, and then I sit & watch it zooming past the commercials & such. I can watch the hour show in about 35 minutes. And still have time to zoom back & watch Phil start WAY too low on his song & wonder when whale songs became a theme on AI…

  • Little Boy Blue

And Jared sang If You Really Love Me???

I have always said to myself — 90% of Stevie Wonder songs are not done justice on this show.

There was one person who broke the Stevie Wonder curse — Elliott Yamin. From hereon, all performances of IF YOU REALLY LOVE ME will be compared to that one peformance which prompted Simon to call Elliott — potentially the best voice we’ve had in Idol history.

Of course, because the curse was broken, Taylor Hicks went on to kill the song — LIVING FOR THE CITY.

I’d like to see someone else do this song and make us forget that performance.

  • mags
  • calimari

I loved Taylor’s Living for the City. The first time more so than the second one. Judges liked it too. But I agree Elliott was great on his.

  • dave

I’m not sure what is worse about Awphil. His dreadful, bland vocals or his pandering to the judges. I’d rather hear Sligh give contrived, practiced comments to Simon than listen to Awphil tell Simon that he would change his eyes. UGH.

  • SEXYGIRL

At least this is going to be a very snarky season.

That’s the only reason to watch AI this season.

I have never long nor look back and compare previous seasons to the current and that’s because I usually don’t remember much from the previous seasons. I vote for AI to scarp this season and just show the best of their past 5 seasons for the next twelve weeks. I think it will be more entertaining than what we’re watching now. At least it would be fun going down memory lane, if nothing else.

I like Chris S. but I can’t look at him.
I like Blake but I think his beatbox is a bit of an advantage over the others because it’s like playing an instrument.
Jared it cute but was painful to watch because the poor guy was straining to sing and trying to be cool and sexy at the same time.
Brandon, Bandon, Brandon..You really let Dave, your biggest supporter, down.
Where is the Sundance from the Audition. We really need to find him.
Sanjaya really needs to go home. Also, he needs to know when to tell the hairstyle “NO” to some of those hairstyles. Still love the smile thou.
Chris R. I don’t remember the song. Just remember he was very nasal.
Phil, LeAnne Rhimes is not very happy with you. Even the screaming at the end could not salvage that bad performance.

After watching those guys last night, I was left wondering what it might be had the judges let through other singers like the male cheerleader.

  • IGetCranked

Awphil! I love it! ROTFL I about died laughing when Simon made the hat and big ol eyes comment.

  • emeralgem

I too loved Taylor’s first rendition of Living For The City…And since I was totally hooked on Taylor, I can honestly say that I do NOT remember what anyone else sang that night. Yep, I’m BIASED..
I do like Elliott though and hope he does well.

  • jadore

And Jared sang If You Really Love Me???

replace “sang” with “slaughtered”, and that would pretty much sum it up :wink_wp:

Hubby just yelled upstairs to me that he’s waiting on hold with Sovereign Bank of NE (we’re in MA) – and they’re playing Taylor Hicks.

I say you’re kiddin’. He comes to the stairs and holds up the phone – it’s JTFTW – loud and clear! What a hoot. Some random thoughts about last night . . .

I’m beginning to doubt Brandon’s ability. Is he mailing it in or what? I felt like I had to turn up the volume because I could not really hear his voice. It was at the same level as the background singers and instruments. There could be no other reason for this except that he wants off the show.

I relistened to Ace’s rendition of the Keith Urban song that Chris R sang last night. I can now see the thinness of Chris’s voice. Ace was terrific, even though he had some problem spots in the song as well. But don’t hate me because I love Chris’ grin and think he is cuter than cute. I can’t help but to cheer him on and hope to see better from him next week.

The only performance that got me on my feet (and my daughter – she is only 9 and never heard of the song) was Blake. I love that song and I thought the beat boxing was clever.

I’m not getting Chris Sligh. Yes, yes, he can sing in tune. But I feel he is overbearing or something. Something about him makes me shudder. When he asked Ryan for a hug – UGH. Did not like his song at all. And I don’t think he had the most energy. He seemed to be mailing it in also. There is no fire behind him.

Did you see the evil eyes from the boys when the judges said that only 4 boys should go on? And then when the closing music played, the cameras focussed on the backup singers and musicians letting loose and not the boys? Makes me wonder.

  • thedingoateyobaby

I agree with many of you. If Ace were on THIS year, he would kill and he would win IMHO. Its just that, as luck would have it, he was on in a season chock full of talent and he got lost in the crowd. The boy has the look and he has a very good voice. he knows how to use it as well.

    I love Ace.
    I love Bucky.
    I love E.
    I Loveeeeee Taylor.
And even though I didnt LOVE Chris, there would never be any denying that he could sing. The boy had a very very good voice.

Thats FIVE guys alone who were better than just good.

I dont know why Idol decided to change the recipe. In all of America and from thousands upon thousands of talented people…they chose these kids. I dont get it. I know that in my own small circle of friends, I have two who could kick serious ass singing just about anything.

    LaKisha gives dreams a chance
Young church singers ready to follow idol

When Danario Green becomes a famous singer like Flint native LaKisha Jones, he wants to spend some of his millions helping children with disabilities.

For himself, he’d like a “big, fancy house with an elevator” – preferably in Atlanta – and a nice car.

“I want a limousine to take me everywhere,” said Danario, 10, who plans to audition for “American Idol” when he’s 16 or 17.

Okay, so any speculation on who will sing last tonight? I suspect that it will be Stephanie. They will try to save her. Sabrina and Lakisha have already had the pimp spot and Melinda doesn’t need it (although, she’s my back-up guess).

I think that going into tonight, Melinda and Lakisha have nothing to worry about. I think that Jordin is also safe due to be both different enough and good enough. Either Sabrina or Stephanie could go home if they faulter or if Gina or Hayley have a stand out night. I think Antonella will also be safe (regardless of what she does tonight).

Did anyone notice Ryan’s parting comments to Sanjaya? They seemed so definite, so permanent…something along the lines of “goodbye and good luck in the future.” I thought it a bit odd. Maybe TPTB are gonna kick him off no matter what the votes and since the Dialidol stuff is so close, no one would be the wiser….

  • mnsoul

Why is this season less than stellar? After 5 seasons of this, one problem that is becoming apparent is that the viewers are starting to be more AI experienced than the auditioners. I’m getting a little tired of the same mistakes being made year after year.

How many times do they have to be told “Don’t do Stevie Wonder, Celine, Whitney!”? If you watched the show at all, you’d know comments like “I just wanted to come out and have some fun” or “It’s my favorite song, so that’s why I picked it”, means you just sucked.

Did anyone notice Ryanà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s parting comments to Sanjaya? They seemed so definite, so permanentà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ¦something along the lines of à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“goodbye and good luck in the future.à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ I thought it a bit odd. Maybe TPTB are gonna kick him off no matter what the votes and since the Dialidol stuff is so close, no one would be the wiserà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ¦.

I actually did not hear Ryan say that but I think TPTB SHOULD be getting nervous cause that boy could easily swing the entire show. Im betting you got a whole bunch of tweens voting for him and not much else. They should be very nervous and FoxyDonna is right. I also remember a clause that stipulated that if the vote was within a certain close margin, the show could decide who stays and who goes. To this day, i believe its the reason Clay got the boot in Season 2. I think the margin was razor thin and the show certainly did not want Clay to be the winner so they gave it to Ruben.

At least in that scenario, both had crazy good voices.

Of course, because the curse was broken, Taylor Hicks went on to kill the song à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’ LIVING FOR THE CITY.

Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢d like to see someone else do this song and make us forget that performance.

Wow, it’s funny how different people’s experiences are. I LOVED Taylor’s Living For The City especially the first time he sang it.

Easy, where did Taylor comment on Blake? Tyalor likes to mix things up in his music and I can definitely see where he would appreciate Blake doing the same, but I know Taylor’s also had some nice comments for Sligh as well.

IMO, Stevie Wonders “Innervisions” album was one of the best ever, a true classic and one of the best songs that came from it was IMO, Livin For The City and I think Taylor kicked….HARD on that song. I was proud.

So I was trying to hold out hope for this season as long as possible but I think I’m finally ready to admit it’s never going to live up to last season. On the other hand, I like this group much much more than I liked either of seasons 3 or 4. It’s just all getting a little old for me I guess. Of the guys, I only think Blake and Chris Sligh deserve to move on. The rest could be cut and I’d forget their names tomorrow. It seems that some years the judges will get it right and sometimes not.

And all this Daughtry #1 talk has me wondering, is he outpacing Carrie Underwood at this point? What were their respective numbers at 15 weeks? Anyone have that info?

  • pj

My guess is that they are announcing the song-writing competition and an all-star idol show tomorrow night.

I really can’t see them actually sending four boys home, but I guess it’s possible. I would keep Sligh, Blake, Brandon and Chris R. I really don’t care for Chris R, but the alternatives (Suckdance, Phil, Sanjaya and Jared) leave me no choice but to include him.

Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ll see if he has any idea what station theyà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢re playing if he ever gets off the phone.

In no way will the Thursday night announcement have anything to do with the voting procedure. You can’t change the rules after the contest begins. Its not fair to the singers,(and I use that term loosely) or the public. I think the producers know they have a weak season and they need to spice it up with outside help. All Star Idol show? As long as its not the winners, themselves, I’d be all for that.

Do you really think the “big surprise” is the songwriting competition? I don’t. We already know about this. I just can’t fathom what it might be. Ryan said it is “one of the most important events in Idol history.” What can that possibly be?

  • skylight1219

Looks like we can go one step further than the VFTW site, and, have vote for the best of the worst. This season stinks up the airwaves. Wonder if their sponsors are watching, and, scratching their heads wondering, why am I being bilked millions of dollars to sponsor this crapola? The girls have more talent, but, they are all so generic. Where are the personalities? But, I’m not voting this year. No one has inspired me enough to pick up the telephone. How sweet it is.

  • http://www.idolicious.com Kat

I thought Taylor’s “best of luck” to Sligh was a very polite and classy way of saying “yeah, I really don’t like the guy (or don’t think he’s great).” So much better than the “Um, you know what? I don’t think he’ll, like, WIN, but he’s got the goofy smile, maybe people will get behind that” we got from another season 5 cntestant.

  • madaboutu

foxydonna………perhaps the most important event in Idol history will be that Nigel Lythgoe is running for President, with Simon as his running mate. Oh no, that’s just their fantasy. :lol_ee:

Of the guys, I only think Blake and Chris Sligh deserve to move on. The rest could be cut and Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢d forget their names tomorrow.

The thing I like about Sligh and Blake is their ADVENTURISM.
They’re into singing esoteric songs from paths that are not well trodden instead of performing the same-old, same-old Whiteny/Celine/Aretha/Stevie/Phil Colins routine we hear year-in and year-out.

Thus far, Blake has introduced us to such singers as Keane, Jamaroqui and a raggae rhythmed song from 311 that not even the judges know of ( which fits his contemporary persona to a “T”).

Sligh has the penchant for choosing not often heard of songs from groups like Mutemath and DC Talk.

I think it’s all good at this stage for the two of them because the theme nights are going to be an exercise in songs we’ve heard of often-enough before.

The only thing that worries me about Blake is his penchant for show-casing his beatboxing. When he gets to share the stage with big-belters like Lakisha and Melinda in the theme nights…this schtick can only get you so far.

  • Easy

    I thought the same, Kat.

Taylor Hicks is nothing if not classy.

Blake’s the only original among the men this year, so it stands to reason that the most original Idol ever would take a liking to him.

From the tone of Nigel’s interview snippet that MJ posted, it feels like it’s going to be some sort of charity event. They are going to do an extra-special Idol episode to raise money for the poor or to fund school music programs or something of that nature. He said it involves America and it involves American Idol and, most tellingly, something like “we’re going to be the first program that addresses this.” That’s what sprung to mind for me, anyway.

Simon on J-Hud: An Apology? Keep Dreaming!

Simon Cowell says he doesn’t expect Jennifer Hudson to apologize for calling him “abusive” during her run on American Idol, no matter how wrong she might be.

After “EXTRA” dug up several clips of Simon continually praising the Oscar winner during her run on the show, the acid-tongued judge had a surprising reaction, saying “Does she owe me an apology? No. I wouldn’t expect an apology, funny enough.”

But Cowell does expect Hudson to show some love for the people that helped her blow up. “I’d say thank your lucky stars, you’ve had two breaks in your life, “American Idol” and “Dreamgirls,” doesn’t get any better than that.”

Hudson isn’t the only “Idol” wannabe the brutal Brit tackled in the interview. When asked about Internet porn queen Antonella Barbra, and Kellie Picker’s new, um, set of pipes, Simon definitely didn’t hold back.

Jewelry Sprout is sponsoring a Proud Of Our Troops drive. They are asking everyone to please support and uplift our troops by sending them the CD from American Idol winner Taylor Hicks. The CD is titled “Taylor Hicks.” Show your love and thanks to our troops and give them something that will lift their spirits and give them musical enjoyment during their off time. Some of our troops do not receive any mail. It is very sad. Please show you care and join in their drive.

The CDs will be distributed to our soldiers in each branch of the Armed Forces who are overseas. Your CDà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s will go to our troops who are all over the world. Our troops are not only in Iraq, but in many other places too.

The Proud Our Troops drive started at the end of June 2006. Part 1 of the drive ran for 21 weeks. 3,157 “Do I Make You Proud” cdà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s were sent to our men and women overseas! hicks review
Taylor Hicks didnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t disappoint the Soul Patrol … or anybody else in the house.
Hicks took the stage in a sports jacket and jeans to a loud standing ovation and many in the crowd – including everything from 10-year-olds wearing à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Chicks for Hicksà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ T-shirts to old ladies with walkers – never sat down. Hicks sang, danced, played a little guitar, blew on his harmonica and never stopped moving during his nearly 90-minute soul/blues/R&B/rock set.

That’s what I’ll be curious to see in the coming weeks. There’s much more to singing than belting but that’s generally what gets you attention on Idol. I still think Blake has a voice that’s appealing even when he’s not pushing it (like last night) which could carry him, plus his image will get him major points. I guess we’ll just have to wait and see (that’s how they’ll keep us watching!).

You canà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t change the rules after the contest begins.

Why not? Survivor does it all the time. That’s the thing about reality TV–once the reality becomes too predictable, it must change the paradigm or else it will jump the shark completely. I gave up on Survivor after Bobby Jon but I know for many fans, it’s still going strong primarily b/c it doesn’t stick with the status quo.

COMMENTS ON THE OTHER GUYS …

Sanjaya – The kid is just too meek to be in this competition and I’m not even sure if he’s comfortable making it this far. He’s now had three straight weeks without showing a second of emotion, without building to a single powerful note and without putting his stamp on a single moment. John Mayer must be turning over is grave after that performance…WAIT, John Mayer is still young and alive and dating Jessica Simpson — Well. this will kill him.

But seriously… tonight’s the night to put him out of his misery. HE OBVIOUSLY WANTS TO GO !

Sundance — The so called much-touted power vocals apparently is nothing but shouting. I believe he chose PEARL JAM hoping to cover his inability to sustain the power notes melodically. However, this did little to cover his shortcomings. Sundance of course, argues that the shouting-over-singing style was true to the original. I disagree. Listen to the original here :

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oNO6pAJBCs4

Honestly, this kid should be the next one to go but will probably still be there to torment us.

Brandon — I really was rooting for him, I really wanted Brandon to do well, seeing how he wants a break from being a background singer for the likes of Christina Aguillera… but by this point, Brandon has made it abundantly clear why heà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s a backup singer. He’s like the skater who attempts a triple axel and fails every time. He’s good looking and all that, but being a solo star just isn’t for him ( and I’m shaking my head in sorrow as I say this ).

Jared — God gives people enough talent to entertain people but not enough to put them to the top. He ought to be thankful that he is athletic ( but not good enough to make it to the NBA ), and musical (but not good enough to make it to the top ). He’s the prototypical jack-of-all-trades, master of none.

American Idol: Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz. So boring I had to play Tetris on my cell phone while watching. MORE COMMENTS ON THE GUYS :

Phil Stacey is like the New York Knicks this season…. he always starts poorly and then tries to recover at the last quarter when he reaches full-tilt belting. The Knicks sometimes win and sometimes lose with this kind of last minute recovery style of basketball. I’m not sure of singing 50% will get you anywhere when crunchtime comes. And please Phil, show a little more Navy Attitude. Don’t grovel and say to Simon you’ll change the way your eyes look just to please that twit.

Chris Richardson — A boy without a boy band doesn’t do anything for me. I’m still wondering what the judges see in Justin Timberlake-lite. Chris Richardson’s voice, true to his Justin Timberlake persona, can only do so much when the notes reach the high C.

And oh — AA seems to be working — Paula Abdul sounds quite lucid last night.

‘Girls Gone Wild’ offers Antonella Barba $250K to host video

“Girls Gone Wild” founder and CEO Joe Francis has made a public offer of $250,000 to “American Idol” contestant Antonella Barba of Point Pleasant to serve as a celebrity host.

The offer comes in the wake of a series of racy Web photos that may or may not feature Barba.

“There’s a little ‘Girls Gone Wild’ in every woman, and this should be embraced as a positive, not a negative, ” Francis said via a press release issued today. “Antonella Barba is an unbelievably sexy girl who obviously knows how to have a good time.”

The “Girls Gone Wild” video series is produced by the production company Mantra Films, which is headquartered in Los Angeles.

Barba is scheduled to perform during tonight’s episode of “Idol,” airing at 8 p.m. on Fox.

    Blogging à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“American Idolà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ : Will The Losers Finally Lose?

If watching American Idol season after season teaches you one thing, ità ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s how easily a person can skate by on sheer cuteness before facing their inevitable ouster. This week is the final installment of separate boy and girl performances before the sexes combine into a Top Twelve, ten of whom are wasting their time trying to top Lakisha Jones and Melinda Doolittle. Especially the fellas, who continue to plunder the tiny strip of land between mind-numbing mediocrity and outright suckage….

Well, I’m going to hold out hope that this season can still be salvaged. Isn’t the Top 12 where they all get makeovers and more importantly, vocal coaches? Some of these people are right on the bubble… they are good but they just need a little push to pull it out. I think someone like Deborah Byrd et al could do wonders for contestants like Phil Stacey, Chris Sligh, and Blake Lewis. And I can’t wait to see what hair and makeup do with Sabrina, who is pretty but could be stunning if she toned down the makeup and changed her hair. Am I the only one curious about how the stylists will dress Lakisha? Perhaps we’ll see everyone grow once the professionals get to them.

Or, this season could just really, really suck. Sigh.

    Hi everyone.

Last night, I liked Blake and Chris S. That’s it. This is not a good season for male talent.

I see that on his recent audio blog, Taylor is encouraging fans to request JTFTW at radio stations. That seems to go against what some here have been saying. Does he know something we don’t?

Jersey – If you’re lurking, I received the Westbury tickets today. WooHoo! Thanks a million :)

Hezzer – I finally picked up Anne of Green Gables. There was a bit of confusion at the store since I didn’t realize that Anne was a motion picture, as well as a TV series. In any case, I got the movie. Can’t wait to watch it.

Tuesday Viewers Suffer Through ‘Idol’ Men
‘House’ is huge and The CW’s new reality show opens big

Fast National ratings for Tuesday, March 6 ,2007.

There may be a consensus that the men stink on this season’s “American Idol,” but that didn’t stop viewers from tuning in to “Idol” and FOX on Tuesday.

Overall, FOX averaged a 15.1 rating/23 share, far, far ahead of the 6.3/10 for second place CBS or NBC’s 5.3/8. ABC was fourth with a 4.1/7 and The CW was fifth with a 2.8/4.

Among adults 18-49, FOX had a 10.3 rating, more than four-times better than the 2.3 rating for NBC or CBS’ 2.2 rating. The CW moved up to fourth with a 1.9 rating and ABC trailed with a 1.8 rating.

At 8 p.m., the Top Eight “Idol” men attracted a 16.0/24, down slightly from last week’s episode, but a good bit better than the 8.0/12 for CBS’ “NCIS” repeat. “Dateline NBC” and ABC’s “America’s Funniest Home Videos” followed, while “Gilmore Girls” had a 3.0/5….

    It sucks.

    Daughtry Reclaims Billboard # 1

After a week in which none of the records comprising the
Billboard albums sales chart cleared the 100,000-sold mark, and any mention of “American Idol” immediately prompted discussion of controversial season-six contestant Antonella Barba, the #1 spot on the top 200 belongs to Chris Daughtry.

The “Idol” veteran’s band rode a 7 percent sales increase to the top – without any compromising photos of its chrome-domed frontman making the rounds on the internet.

Daughtry, the self-titled debut from the rock collection, returns to Billboard’s apex – dropping the chart’s previous champ, Norah Jones, to the # 2 position. Daughtry sold close to 90,000 units, giving the singer his second taste of retail domination since late January; the 15-week-old LP first assumed the #1 slot six weeks ago, and has drifted between #2 and #9 (actually lowest #11) spots since.

jpfan – In response to your remarks about Elliott waaaaaaay back there, I would buy his cd even if I didn’t like him, which I very much do. I hope he blasts through the charts and proves Clive so wrong.

Season 6 – Thank goodness this is the last separate week, because I could not watch another show like last night. Singing obscure songs is not going to garner the wide ranging audience or voter pool that someone needs to stay in the competition. IMO, that’s why DialIdol has them all at risk today.

I think the judges and TPTB did a pretty lousy job this year. We have the blandest group of guys I can remember and the most similar group of women. Although I think some of the women are talented, their problem is going to be differentiating themselves. Unless something radically changes, this won’t be “must see” TV for me much longer.

  • madaboutu

Lisa B………one only has to look at the competition to get the ratings. There is none.
griz………have you seen the pics that are posted on the Huntsville thread by #191? I have dubbed # 3214 and #3201 The Agony and the Ecstasy.

  • tinawina

pj posted the same spoilers I saw. Antonella is no Corinne Bailey Rae and Gina is no Amy Lee, but weà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ll see.Haley could do well with the Faith Hill song and I wonder which à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Heartbreakerà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ Jordin will do – Mariah (probably) or Pat Benatar. Heh.

You know who would be interesting singing Amy Lee? Jordin. The kid is just SO not R&B to me, I would love to see her sing something rock/pop ish. In fact, that is the week I want to get to…the “Songs From the 2000s” week or whatever they want to call it. The one where they are supposed to show what kind of records they’d make if they had a recording contract. I would LOVE to see how Melinda sees herself fitting in to today’s music, not to mention Brandon. Should be interesting.

I read somewhere they started w/stylists already. The guys are hopeless but they may improve the girls somewhat. There is nothing decent to watch when AI is on. If there was, people would start drifting away. Last year, idol was up against the Olympics and the Grammys and still killed. This season has the possible of cursing anyone/anything associated it with it. So I fear for the guest stars and commercial campaigns. There’s a horrible disconnect between the guests and the “talent.” Jennifer Lopez, Bon Jovi, Gwen Stefani,
Martina McBride with 5 divas and some boybanders. Big suckage ahead. Hopefully the “big surprise” will not include any SEASON 6 IDOLS.

Stop Him Before He Sings Again!!!

There are times when Americans must forget their differences, and unite against a common foe.The left and right, the rich and the poor.Who among us has forgotten the smoking wreckage that scarred us all in 2001?

Sanjaya Malakar is the smoking wreckage of 2007 that is scarring us aurally, and those who maliciously support him in order to wound us, over and over again, are the true terrists in America. Al Jazeera is showing clips from American Idol and ità ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s emboldening our enemies, dammit. à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Ha ha!,à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ the extremists chirp gleefully, à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“America is in love with a weird beanpole creepyguy squeek-toy! Our evil plans will now proceed apace!à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬

Ità ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s a direct quote from one of those Q&A type interviews (person transcribes the answer they got from the interviewee). Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢m pretty sure he said it. Kirsten
    ***********************************

I wasn’t doubting your veracity Kirsten; hope you know that. The only thing about this Q and A interviews – and I’ve done similar pieces – is that people generally don’t tend to talk on point. For example, Chris could have gone on to say something like, “Well, I’m sure the Stones have gotten way more than from scalpers, but I don’t think they ever got that much for actual admission yada yada yada.” Thing is, you can’t run entire quotes with subquotes because the article would run too long, be boring and what would be the point? And sometimes the sentences have to be cut and stitched for the reader when the interviewee inserts two or three clauses. This should be indicated by the writer, but rarely is. The press is sloppy – and apparently so is Chris.

I would never submit to one of those interviews unless I got to proof it prior to its going to press, a thing I’d guess the Idols wouldnt’ think of doing.

  • CarieB

DAUGHTRY. I sure picked the right horse last year, didn’t I? :wink_wp:

ITA Melinda’s rumored song choice is too old fashioned. Gina should do “bring me to Life” instead and have Chris do the “screaming” parts as back up. THAT would be fun to watch!

  • dusty

On The View today…they said TPTB were no longer allowing them to have any clips from the show…and they think it is due to the criticism they have had about the show (the cruelty of auditions, Paula’s loopiness, Antonella, etc.) They dished on the show anyway and commented on the poor/boring performances and how all the guys looked like they had had their eyebrows done. It was pretty funny.

I can’t read the books anymore b/c I hear her voice everytime Anne speaks. I have to say, though, that the sequel versions with Anne in World War I (?) are nowhere close to being as good.

  • squishy

I think that Melinda should sing more current songs and show what she is made of comparing to today’s singers.

I wish there would be a banning of any Whitney, Celine, or Mariah songs in the Top 12 especially Celine.

    CarieB,

Excellent idea of Chris “screaming” the back up vocals for Gina!

  • SEXYGIRL

This week is the final installment of separate boy and girl performances before the sexes combine into a Top Twelve, ten of whom are wasting their time trying to top Lakisha Jones and Melinda Doolittle. Some download numbers for this week (regular guy is travelling):

Elliott Yamin debuts at 37, with 25,650
Katharine McPhee climbs 46-38, with 25,190.
Daughtry climbs 119-62, with an 81% gain to 16,725 (Home? Isn’t INO doing better?)
Jennifer Hudson climbs 99-76, with sales up 23% to 13,845

    Plus:

Jazon Mraz enters at 45, with 24,090 (could this be “Geek in the Pink” or does Jason have another song out? Does Idol strike again?)

  • Metta

He plays the bass guitar, piano and clarinet.

I am so tired of the judges’ comments this year too. Every time someone sings Stevie Wonder, randy says the same thing:
“I was worried when I heard you were singing stevie cause he’s the hardest thing in the world to sing.” He said it last year and this year. Don’t they realize that this junk is analyzed to death and we remember everything in detail?
OK, yes I need a life, but this stuff bugs me. Wish they would come up with some constructive comments and not just this same old nonsense.

What a great review, Taylor is winning new people over at every concert. I absolutely love the interview picture of Taylor about half way down, damn the man is handsome.

Dingo and Msgirl, I watched the finale of Nashville Star and although both were awesome I would have loved for Zach to win. If a label doesn’t pick him up,I will be shocked. I can see the song he wrote about dad and the whiskey zooming to number one and staying there for a very long time.

I read something about Angela’s background and it talked about her alcoholic dad. I thought the way Zack’s dad reacted to the song, very sad and crying, that there was something behind those words. It’s a tough situation for them but at least they grew and worked through the problems. I adore both of them and wish them both to succeed.

“Not one of these guys has à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“left it all on the stageà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ like Chris, Taylor and Elliott did every single time they performed in S5. ”

CarieB, that sums it up perfectly – that is definately what is missing in the guys this year.

  • Little Boy Blue

NONE of these guys would have stood out last year. Not one of these guys has à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“left it all on the stageà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ like Chris, Taylor and Elliott did every single time they performed in S5.

I’ll be fair with the guys this season and more or less blame a lot of it on song choice.

I still have a strong feeling that Chris Sligh has the vocals to push him deep into the competition regardless of how people feel about his “gimmick” factor ( e.g. “Give me a hug Ryan”).

    Let’s review song choice.

At this juncture in the competition — the top 3 males mentioned above had chosen outstanding songs.

Daughtry did Bon Jovi’s WANTED DEAD OR ALIVE, then Hemmorrhage by FUEL ( which prompted the group to offer him lead vocals position in their band ), and BROKEN by Seether/Evanescence.

Elliott did Stevie Wonder’s IF YOU REALLY LOVE ME, MOODY’s MOVE FOR LOVE and HEAVEN by Bryan Adams — all very singable, relatively well known songs with nice melody.

Taylor Hicks of course gave us — LEVON by Elton John , EASY by Lionel Ritchie and blew us away with TAKING IT TO THE STREETS by the Doobie Brothers ( that one, according to sources, was given the longest sustained applause in idol history ).

Notice their song choices — Mostly relatively well known, singable songs.

On the other hand , what do the two top male singers give us this season ? ( Blake and Sligh ).

Other than Ray Lamontagne’s TROUBLE, we get unknown songs with very un-singable melodies and forgettable hooks which do little to highlight vocals. Heck, Blake had to compensate for the poor melody of the songs by having to decorate them with beatboxing. Tells you a lot about song choice right there.

And who ever listens to Mutemath and DC Talk other than tried and true fans ( like Chris Sligh ) ? And whoever said that these songs highlight your ability to sing ?

I’m still optimistic that the theme nights will make the competition more interesting.

The dialidol results are very interesting. I wonder if AI opened more phone lines.

I just think there’s a general apathy about voting – at least for the guys (except for a few). I believe the phones were significantly busier for the “girls” last week than for the “boys”. I’d expect the same this week.

Carrie Underwood will probably draw some of the casual viewers who would otherwise stray on elimination night.

Last I looked, I do not believe that dave would care that I called Ray ugly. Especially since I agree with him that Ray is an extremely talented singer and songwriter. Plus, dave is really hot.

JJ-You are totally correct. You can call Ray ugly all you want. You understand and see talent which I really appreciate. Don’t mind Metta, she hasn’t been the same since her Ray took off on her. Actually, its all her fault, changing her name from SoulpaTROLLer to metta. The funny thing is she can hide by changing her name but she can’t hide her fangirliness one iota. JJ is really hot, too.

    SPRay. Heh.

Think William Shatner in that classic Twilight Zone episode, where he thinks thereà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s a gremlin on the planeà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s wing.

The fact that the same people who play this stuff feel that Eà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s new song fits in the playlist is seriously shaking my faith in Elliott which has held strong for monthes. Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢m not kidding.

Kiis tends to play the same music over and over and over again. Nelly Furtado is on non-stop. However, they’re normally big “followers” and not trend-starters. Once a song is super-hot they will start playing it. Which is why it shocked me when I started hearing Elliott’s song every single time I got in my car.

I can’t imagine her doing Tina Turner well either….. The song change seems completely wrong as well. How many people change songs on the day of the show? And especially an untrained singer! Why would they even let her do that? The band would have to learn a new song….

    hmm interesting spoilers

Jordin – OK, there are 3 Heartbreaker’s that come to mind. The Dionne Warwick one which, I doubt it. The Mariah Carey one, which, also… yea right… the one I think she’s singing… more like hoping and praying shes singing is the Pat Benetar song. Jordin is already pretty much my favorite out of the girls. If she sings one of my favorite songs ever she will sky rocket herself to miles above everyone else. Great choice for her.
Sabrina – OK, if she’s singing “Don’t Let go” by En Vogue, which is what I think it is… I think it’s a good choice for her. Plus I haven’t heard that song in ages and would love to hear someone put a current spin on it. It’s a great song. The only thing that worries me is that she’s been doing straight r&b this whole time. I’d like to see her color it up a little bit. There’s no doubt she’ll be any short of awesome though. This girl can sing.
Antonella – hmm. Well, it’s better than those stupid ballads shes been singing. It also doesn’t take much vocal prowess to pull off corinne bailey rae. I think she may end up doing pretty well tonight.
Haley – alright Haley, just get off my screen please. “If my heart had wings”?!? are you effing serious. That is the lamest most karaoke song anyone can sing. Thank god nothing can save her from elimination. At least she could have tried though.
Stephanie – Not too familiar with this song. All I know is Mary J Blige covered it. Stephanie bores me. I hope she goes home with Haley.
    Lakisha – good luck.
Gina – Very interesting choice, also fitting and just what Simon wanted. I have a feeling that the band may drown out her singing but as my second fave… i’m rooting for her.
Melinda – Ok, can you please stop being awesome and singing amazing songs? This is such a good fit for her. She’ll be the best of the night by far again. I can’t wait to hear her interpretation of this song.

In the deal, Barba is being offered $250,000 to be the newest celebrity host following in the footsteps of Snoop Dogg and former REAL World celebrities, Syrus, Tonya, Cameran and Ace.

Virtual Tip Jar or Charity Case?
Asking Artists to Take It Up The ARS
by Jenny Toomey and Kristin Thomson
    04.20.2000, updated 05.20.2000

It is our belief that indie artists will be disproportionately affected by a loss of revenue in a post-copyright era. We send out a challenge to all those working in the Internet music business to put their “substitute royalties” and ancillary revenue streams where their music-fan mouths are and to figure out a legitimate way to compensate musicians for their songs. We are excited to support any innovative payment strategy that seems feasible, and we refuse to support any business model that does not guard the financial value of musicians’ labor. This is exactly what we told Napster when they contacted us to ask us for our support. And here is why…

Granted, this is from 2000, but CD sales are down markedly from then, and the basics haven’t changed.

Also, be sure to click the link to this classic article:

    http://www.indiecentre.com/info/article.cfm?CategoryID=0&ArticleID=25

The band is now 1/4 of the way through its contract, has made the music industry more than 3 millon dollars richer, but is in the hole $14,000 on royalties. The band members have each earned about 1/3 as much as they would working at a 7-11, but they got to ride in a tour bus for a month.

The next album will be about the same, except that the record company will insist they spend more time and money on it. Since the previous one never “recouped,” the band will have no leverage, and will oblige.

This is from Rolling Stone 2005, but it’s an interesting overview of…Money Makers

    http://www.rollingstone.com/news/story/6959138/money_makers

The “Moneymakers” list was compiled from extensive interviews with record-company executives, managers, lawyers, agents and publicists, and uses figures derived from Nielsen SoundScan, Pollstar, the Recording Industry Association of America, Amusement Business/Billboard, The Yellow Pages of Rock and ArtistDirect. Net figures reflect what performers take home after recording expenses have been deducted and managers, agents and lawyers have taken their cuts. All figures should be considered estimates. Huh, the things you come across some days:

    http://www.jimdero.com/News2002/CobainMar10.htm

“In September, 1991, Nirvana released its second album, “Nevermind.” Propelled by the single “Smells Like Teen Spirit” and benefiting from a near-mythic confluence of being the right band from the right place at the right time, the disc sold a staggering six million copies by the spring of 1992–at which point Cobain threatened to quit if his bandmates didn’t agree to changing the split on their songwriting royalties.

The three musicians had previously divided the money evenly. Now, Cobain proposed a 75/25 split for the music with him getting 100 percent of the lyrics, retroactive to the start of the band. Grohl and Novoselic felt betrayed, but they agreed, lest Nirvana cease to exist.”

    And: http://www.segerfile.com/bands.html

By the time Silver Bullet was formed, Seger had changed his policy. “I tell everybody in my band — and this is going to sound really shitty — I tell ‘em, ‘Don’t bring me your songs, man, because I got too many of my own. I can dig you trying to do your own songs. I’ll even help you do it, but don’t expect them to be on our albums, because that’s what I busted my ass for fifteen years to get. To write all the songs on the album.’ That may sound shitty, but that’s the way it is. I mean, Springsteen’s not gonna record his roadie’s songs just to make his roadie happy.” Dave Marsh, June 15, 1978, Rolling Stone. “Bob Seger: Not A Stranger Anymore.”

It is a crying shame that 2 girls have to be cut to make room for 6 yuck guys. Why can’t we just have the 24 and vote for them and the top 12 go up. It could be all guys or girls-who cares!

  • lb60

Elliott is on Larry King right now!!

  • terry

LisaB, Nevada, griz, Kristen some great links and pics the last few days….thank you I also appreciate the many posters who make insightful comments on your posts. :clap_tb:

Am I the only one who just saw the Newsweek article “Taylor’s Bad Day”? Taylor vs. Daughtry, of course, with Taylor as the loser and Nigel Lythgoe agreeing with Simon that America got it wrong. Good grief! Newsweek? Is that what news journalism as come to? Yeah, I know….

  • madaboutu

Watching LKL and Bucky and Elliott are such guys, totally clueless. LOL Lucky them. Diana DiGarmo is very wellspoken and it seemed at times that she especially wanted to say more about what goes on behind AI but thought better of it. It did seem like pimping of Antonella and was a waste of half an hour compared to the Jessica Lunsford coverage before it.

  • radname

i think news journalism has seen the sales skyrocket of trash/gossip magazines and see the popularity of places like perezhilton (WHO I HATE WITH THE FIERY PASSION OF A THOUSAND SUNS) and want a peice of it
    it’s all about the benjamins.
i have a feeling sabrina or stephanie might go tomorrow because i don’t hear anything about their fanbases, they should both make top 12, but for some reason i think we’re in a shock for the girls tomorrow night

  • radname

Antonella surprises me everytime she’s on the show, i had no idea she could play violin so well.
I think theres a heck of a lot more to that girl then what the media portrays her as, and i’m sad that she’s already labelled as a slut when she really hasn’t done anything wrong

  • chewsday

And to think I came so close to not renewing my subscription. I feel as if I’m buying a rag, not a respectable news magazine. And no, it’s not just this article that makes me think so. I’ve been bemoaning the state of journalism for some time – and sighing with relief that I switched out of that major in college.

  • terry

I ask anyone….what is the purpose of the Newsweek article?? Why would Lythgoe and cowell insult their viewers? Since they are all about the $$ where is the money in continuously deriding and demeaning your contest winner??

I am against the slaughter of animals for the sake of fur alone. But perhaps you did not realize that we actually have alligator farms here in Florida. Gators are raised for the meat and their skin – kinda like cattle. If you are okay with wearing leather and eating hamburgers, I don’t think you should have a problem with gator skin.

RE: This is from Rolling Stone 2005, but ità ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s an interesting overview ofà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ¦Money Makers

    http://www.rollingstone.com/news/story/6959138/money_makers

I found the top 10 to be interesting because #5 caught my fancy :

    1) PRINCE $56.5 M

    2) Madonna $54.9 M

    3) Metallica $43.1 M

    4) Elton John $42.9 M

    5) Jimmy Buffet $36.5 M

    6) Rod Stewart $ 34.6 M

    7) Shania Twain $33.2 M

    8) Phil Colins $33.2 M

    9) Linkin Park $33.1 M

    10) Simon and Garfunkel $31.3 M

Guess which Idol winner said he wouldn’t mind having a career and dedicated fans like #5 ? But ohhh.. according to Simon, since #5 doesn’t sell records, he is by definition — NOT SUCCESSFUL.

  • Little Boy Blue

Here’s what made Jimmy Buffet rich…

    5. Jimmy Buffett
    $36.5 MILLION

ON THE ROAD Loyal Parrot Heads helped canny businessman Buffett gross almost $29 million in his latest lap around the nation’s amphitheaters.

ON CD His first-ever country album, License to Chill, debuted at Number One (a first for Buffett) and sold an astounding 1.3 million copies. Buffett releases his CDs on his own label, keeping far more profits than most artists do.

ON THE SIDE His Margaritaville chain of retail stores, nightclubs and restaurants generates an eight-figure income.

    Last year’s rank: 17

Question : Who among you heard or own LICENSE TO CHILL ? And what songs in this album did you hear on the radio ?

  • SoulSunshine

Where’s Dingo? Dingo, if you haven’t watched the ivillage interview with Taylor that Griz posted, you gotta.
    http://video.ivillagelive.com/player/?id=79263
Asked what live artist he’d most like to play with (do a duet with? dang, even my short-term memory is going) Taylor said Van!! (then he added or maybe Paul Simon; two of the greatest ever–according to both me and Taylor). ALSO they asked if he’d be returning to Idol this season and he said Yes.

Question : Who among you heard or own LICENSE TO CHILL ? And what songs in this album did you hear on the radio ?

I haven’t heard the whole album because I’m not a Buffet fan but the album just happens to contain “Hey Good Lookin’” featuring Kenny Chesney, Click Black, Toby Keith, Alan Jackson and George Strait. They made a rocking video of it. He also made a video with Martin McBride of “Trip Around the Sun.” I’m not taking anything away from Jimmy Buffet because he is hugely successful. But I think having an all-star roster on board had a lot to do with those phenomenal sales.

  • onlyforelliott

LBB, That’s the video. CMT and GAC played it a lot.

  • weelassie

Looks like Antonella did get ahold of Kat’s boots.

  • onlyforelliott

And how often did these songs get played on Country radio ?

A LOT!! I wasn’t following that closely and I’m not a big chart watcher. I think Hey Good Lookin’ even won some awards. I don’t know how high it got on the chart, but it was big.

  • weelassie

    radname
I always enjoyed listening to the violin and it is a difficult instrument to play but the thing about Antonella-she just isn’t a very good singer. She is the least talented of the remaining girls. Heck she is less talented than all the ones already sent home. Leslie could sing circles around her.

  • cricket

Antonella was horrible , there was nothing good about her performance tonight. I thought Simon was easy on her and she had the worst performance . On the other hand Haley wasn’t good but she wasn’t half as bad as Antonella and Simon ripped her a new one . Simon is a jerk who thinks with something other than his brain.Simon is so full of it that he’ll piss on your shoes and tell you it’s raining.
And I am so sick of hearing “you’re no Mariah”‘ ” you’re no Whitney”‘ “you’re no Celine”‘ you’re no Stevie”. Just take their damn songs off the list . It’s like a broken record. They tell them to be themselves when singing then they rip them because they are not like ” the forbidden ones”.

  • cricket

Just watching Larry King …geesh.. would somebody please buy Larry a clue . He has no idea what he’s talking about reads from cards and tries to fake his way through an interview. The segment with Dianna , Bucky and Elliott was laughable.

  • madaboutu

So……the disdain that Nigel and Simon have not only for Taylor, but for the Americans who vote and line their pockets and make their show a success, is becoming so apparent, that I personally am boycotting anything connected with American Idol. Sell your show to some American producers Nigel, and go home.
