‘Idol”s 12-Pack: How Did They Do?

…Brandon kicked off the night with his rendition of “You Can’t Hurry Love” and took a beating from the judges’ table. “You came out like you had reverted to a background singer,” said RANDY JACKSON. “It was boring and uninteresting. … Dogg, it has got to be better than that.” SIMON COWELL agreed, adding, “That was a complete letdown. It was a very predictable version and arrangement. You forgot the words. You came over as a background singer for a background singer.”…

    American Idol: Love Hangover

The songs of Diana Ross were the theme of the night, and I was shocked at how normal and articulate Diana Ross was. I was expecting some strung out former starlet hanging on to the last shreds of sanity. She was nothing of the sort. It was either a gross miscalculation on my part, or an imposter parading around as Diana Ross. We may never know.

Brandon Rogers – Sang à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“You Canà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t Hurry Loveà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ – Brandon completely stunk up the joint and got smoked by the judges. He forgot the lyrics. Yikes.

Melinda Doolittle – à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Homeà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ (from the Wiz) was completely boring, but she sounded good. Sheà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢d need to murder Clay Aiken on stage not to go through, so this hardly matters.

Brandon needs to go back to being a background singer. Jordin really impressed me last night and I think Sanjaya will be around for quite awhile yet.

I can’t stand Blake or Chris R. I want one of them to go next.

Stop! In the name of à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’ Diana’s ears

Diana Ross’ ears must be aching. It’s hard to imagine what it’s like watching some of your most beloved tunes being slaughtered live on the country’s most popular TV show. For the most part, that’s what happened on Tuesday’s “American Idol.” After getting a tutorial from Ross, the final 12 contestants attempted to sing some of her classics, but more than a couple couldn’t even remember the words…

It was Diana Ross night and à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“The Bossà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ was much more normal than I expected. She seemed downright warm, thoughtful and caring. And she dispensed some very solid advice à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’ too bad some of the singers didnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t listen…

The American Idol front-runner recently dashed the dreams of Free State residents everywhere eager to claim her as one of our own. On Feb. 19, the 27-year-old Jones was asked point-blank by The Enemy – otherwise known as the Detroit Free Press – why the American Idol Web site identifies Jones’ hometown as Fort Meade when she spent the first 20 years of her life in the Midwest…

    They Keep Hangin’ On
When Diana Ross visited ”American Idol,” it became clear it’s not a two-way race between Melinda and LaKisha: four other contestants could win the supreme prize

This season of American Idol is not a two-way race.

Maybe it should be, but it’s not.

Because while American Idol is, at its heart, a talent competition, it’s also a television show. And its producers (and, yes, its audience) know deep down that a 12-week diva-off between Melinda Doolittle and LaKisha Jones wouldn’t really make for good television. Tuneful, yes. Soulful, definitely. Compelling and suspenseful, well, not so much….

…..The One the Producers and Judges Are Pimping For those of you who’ve missed the last three weeks of Idol, that’d be Jordin Sparks….

OHMYHECK I’m not believing it! Chris S. on the bottom two with only a .02 difference from Stephanie?!! It would be a complete bummer for him to go!

Perhaps this will be a good thing. It seemed like perhaps the idols are aware of dialidol (Sundance saying he was in the top for the two weeks before his booting), and it will give Chris S. a dose of humility, if he indeed needs it.

I can’t imagine the judges letting Chris go at this point. He adds some desperately needed variety to this season.

Lakisha kicked a$$, the rest sucked. I am officially declaring that Melinda annoys me. Come on, no one is that sweet.

The Show That Keeps Them Hanging On

“American Idol” is back with its latest batch of 12 finalists — and so much better this year!

There’s Rickey Minor and the Much Bigger Band, with horns and strings, show host Ryan Seacrest tells us.

And, Ryan and judge Simon Cowell have kicked up the “You’re gay!” “No, you’re gay!” cross talk to a whole new level…

Singer plans to à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‹ride the wave’ to L.A.

Tabaldo, he rejoiced when he made it to the final rounds of à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“American Idolà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ – the singing competition that regularly attracts a television audience of more than 30 million. Just Three Months to Go!

The final dozen “American Idol” finalists rolled up their sleeves and got to work tonight. On a show marked by “so-so” and “average,” two performers dominated: LaKisha Jones and Melinda Doolittle. If she didn’t subject us to that “aw, shucks” nonsense every time she gets a standing ovation, Melinda would be a near perfect performer. LaKisha’s “God Bless the Child” was a thing of true beauty, not just because it was a great song sung by a talented singer, but because, as the judges noted, she was in total control from note one. LaKisha’ one of few highlights in Tuesday’s Idol

…Hopefully the “Good Morning America” crew at Tuesday’s City Hall viewing party found more to like than our panel did.

While LaKisha and Melinda Doolittle (“Home” from “The Wiz”) did nothing to hurt their front-runner status, others like Stephanie Edwards, Chris Slight and Blake Lewis did, proving just how difficult it is for young singers to wrap themselves around old songs, in this case guest/mentor Diana Ross’ old songs of Diana Ross.

Her best ones are really old, from her Motown heyday in the ’60s, but the finalists barely touched songs that would have been automatic crowd (and judge) pleasers…

Sanjaya Malakar Safe: Stephanie Edwards, Chris Sligh Could Go Bye Bye

Expect outrage Wednesday night if DialIdol’s predicted finishes come to fruition. According to the American Idol vote monitoring website that measures busy signals for each Idol, Sanjaya Malakar may have the most votes after favorites Melinda Doolittle and Lakisha Jones – both of whom should be very safe.

Chesapeake’s Chris Richardson hit the big time on “American Idol ” Tuesday night, finally competing against the female singers for the show’s grand prize.

As did the rest of the competitors, Richardson sang a song by Diana Ross.

Sporting a pinstriped white blazer, blue shirt, striped tie and jeans, Richardson again delivered a performance that seemed to excite every sense except the auditory. Even though “American Idol” host Ryan Seacrest and cranky judge Simon Cowell insist they’re friends, they often have nasty exchanges during the live show.

Tuesday night’s show was no exception.

It all started with a simple viewer question for finalist Melinda Doolittle.
“We have a question from Georgia,” said Seacrest. “What do you consider the hardest part of this contest?”

Commentary: False principles make ‘Idol’ a success

…Like all flawed systems, this one was built to break down.

“It’s a singing competition,” judge Paula Abdul scolded her TV audience on Thursday, after two forgettable contestants were spared elimination at the expense of two better singers.

She’s only partly correct. Since its inception, “Idol” has been as much a popularity contest and serial drama, too. As the weeks go by, viewers get attached to some contestants and grow to resent others, frequently for reasons that are not pertinent to a singing competition: looks, personality, fashion, body shape, race…

    Metta,

I don’t think the tie up with American Idol has been that bad for Chris actually. He had the number 1 album twice and is getting played more and more on rock stations. Even some of the very snobby Alternative rock stations are playing INO. INO is number 20 on alternative rock radio which is amazing.

When people like Prince and this year Bono come on the show and sing that that adds to its credibility.

Even one of the alternative rock stations in my neighborhood is playing him.

  • thedingoateyobaby

Oh holy mother of god…there aint enough Valium on this planet to put me out of my Idol misery.

    Letter to god,

dear God, Im sorry for being so mean to ALL previous contestant from Idol. Im sorry for having said they were terrible and couldnt sing. Im sorry for being so hard on them when, as it fucking turns out, they were brilliant compared to these catastrophes!

Hair sticking out all over the place, I whip my chenille robe around me and shuffle out of the fucking batcave to make some fucking coffee muttering this cant be happening and clicking my bunny slippers together saying…there’s no place like HOME. Thats where every fucking one of them shoud be save for maybe 3.

  • SpenserJ

Phillyburb is making fun of African-American hair. Hey that is an Afro you asshole.

I’m going to have to agree with you here Squish. While I too poked a little fun at Diana’s hair (it is 3 ft in diameter), likening the texture of an African-American woman’s hair to pubic hair is way way over the line. Although I must say, her face looks amazing and if she’s had half a dozen facelifts like every 60 yr old woman in Hollywood, good on her because I cannot tell.

    So, last night hmmm…

I was expecting my distaste for Ms. Ross to grow, but I had the opposite feeling. She was kind and patient with the kids and some of performance suggestions were spot on. So, obviously she is not the performing puppet I thought she was; she knows what she’s doing.

Brandon, Brandon, Brandon. Oh how you’ve disappointed me. I wanted to love you, I really did. I’ve kept saying “I’ll give him another week to bring it”. well, nothing has been brought – so I’m over you. Which is a shame because you are one fine looking man.

Sligh, you picked the worst Diana Ross song on record. I admire your valiant attempt to switch it up. But, why waste that effort on such drek? And, your makeover was just so wrong. Please put the glasses back on and try to get back to a place where your hair wasn’t so tight and round. That said, you have a ton of talent and I will be grossly disappointed if you go home before some of these other losers.

I don’t know what there is to be said about Sanjaya. I could barely hear him, and what I did hear wasn’t very good. The Farrah Fawcett hair and the dangly earrings seemed to be a vicious plot thought up by the stylists over a late night round of tequila.

Chris Richardson? Still cute as a button. Still not a great singer. Stephanie is a gorgeous girl (loved the dress) with a good voice, but she sounded a little shaky to me last night.

Blake: still love him. I think he’s got a great voice and a ton of talent, cheesy dance moves and all. Jordin is beautiful and sweet with nice pipes. She does however leave me wanting more in the personality/stage presence department.

Last night, for me, both Lakisha and Melinda were sublime. I give the edge last night to Lakisha. I do not foresee a final between these two, because too many people think they’re one-note divas (although I disagree) but they’re both so far ahead of the others that I would not be at all disappointed if they were the last two standing.

Phil and Gina inspire no words for me this morning because by 9:30 pm, I had forgotten that either was even on the show. Haley may have squeaked out another week with the crying pretty girl routine and I’m okay with that because she seems like a nice enough girl.

  • thedingoateyobaby

    And one more fucking thing..

where in the HELL do these kids find these obscure songs when the song list is about 3 miles long with major gems and well known hits peppered all over?

    Nevermind, it was rhetorical.

  • emeralgem

I missed Brandon, Melinda, Chris S, and Gina last night, but did return home in time to see the others…
I thought Lakisha and Jordin were the best of the ones that I saw perform…
Still NOT overly excited about anyone…
Looks like Sanjaya will be around for another week though…Guess Simon will be crying in his Cola ( or what ever it is he’s drinking ) tonight…

  • thedingoateyobaby

I cant stand Diana Ross but she looked amazing last night and her hair is her trademark. Always has been. I thought she looked wonderful and she gave really constructive criticism. I hate it when I go to not liking someone to liking them. I hate when that happens. Some of my best material ges out the window when that happens dammit.

  • squishy

I had more of an appreciation for Diana Ross last night. She acted more like a mother-figure for the “kids”. It was actually very nice to see.

I have never seen so much pimpage of the à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Top Idolsà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ according to TPTB as this season: Kelly Clarkson, Chris Daughtry, Carrie Underwood, Fantasia, and Jennifer Hudson. There isnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t a week that one of these à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Top Idolsà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ according to TPTB doesnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t get pimped.

If Fantasia’s Broadway acting skills are anything like the lack of talent she displayed in her Made for TV Movie, her picture won’t be up there for long.

Last night’s show was so boring that recapping it was actually a chore. Eh well. Blogging is becoming a chore in and of itself anyway lately. I suspect idolicious is not long for this world. Besides, there are plenty of people who do my job better than I do. Like MJ. :-)

  • jpfan

Diana Ross is the mother of 6 children so the maternal stuff felt real. Patrick Hall, Gideon and Sway would have killed this year. I just listened to Z100 (big top 40 station in NYC) who do idol follow up the day after. It’s usually idol 24/7 over there. This morning, the girl who does the recap said “When does Dancing for the Stars come on?” Says it all.

I’m starting to enjoy the show a bit. Melinda and Lakisha were fantastic! They really are in a class of their own. I give a slight edge to Lakisha, probably because I like the song better. The Coldplay arrangement for “Endless Love” was meh, imo, but Sligh had the best vocal out of the boys. Blake’s arrangement was interesting — it did work better than Sligh’s but he should’ve chosen a better song. I was grooving to Stephanie’s song — she did good. Chris R’s vocal was a mess but I really, really enjoyed the song! Couldn’t keep my legs still. The band did a great job.

But, no matter what, vote for Sanjaya! :)

ps: Houston we’ve got a problem. Blake didn’t use gel during practice.

Because I talked about Idol and Taylor all last year, my older sister finally tuned into Idol this year. The other day she told me she’s TOTALLY addicted to it. I felt so bad. Of all the seasons to draw her in, it’s this awful one. When she could have been watching last year. And I also can’t figure out why so many of them picked such awful songs when there were so many good ones to pick from. Especially Melinda – she tells Ross how she’s a HUGE Motown fan, and then picks something from The Wiz?

  • Masshole

I cant stand Diana Ross but she looked amazing last night
    ************************************
I always thought Diana Ross was a notorious beyotch and had something to do with the downfall of the rest of the Supremes. I forget the story…. they were on welfare or something and she refused help??? Last night she was downright warm and fuzzy. Caught me off guard big-time.

I thought Brandon and Haley brought their game up a bit last night. Sligh’s version of Endless love was so passionless I was glad I wasn’t his wife, but he sure doesn’t deserve to go. Nor does Stephanie.

Blake drove me nuts. Hate his footwork.

Melinda. Well, I think she is sincere and very likable. Lakisha, not so much and I thought she was over-the-top even if the judges didn’t think so.

If Dialidol is right, with the singers leaving good first, the season is going to get infinitely more boring.

They pick lame songs because they are boring people who have bad taste in music. Some of the guys try but they lack the vocals to really shine. It’s not doing well as reality TV either. Come on guys, nobody has a father in prison or deaf parents or anything. The producers were asleep at the wheel this year. Peace out.

Ya’ know, given the age of the contestants and their probable lack of knowledge about Diana Ross – and the Supremes, I can’t figure how they come up with songs at all. It would take days to pick a song. Like to know how that is done.

  • radname

lakisha was not over the top, she wasn’t even over the top for a haley like singer, who can’t even manage over the top. she subdued her vocals the whole performance and if she’s not trained that would be hard for her to do, seeing as she’s just used to full on singing, so congrats for her, it was a good choice of song and performance for her. It’s so surprising to see brandon and melinda and the contrast between them, when i know they’re both background singers, but melinda seems more at home on the stage and when she starts singing it seems like all her nerves melt away then as soon as she stops it’s all awwww shucks routine, which i don’t necessarily mind. but i lol’d pretty hard at paula pouring out the tears last night

    STOP IT!

Paula crying was absolutely priceless. I spit my tea all over the TV screen it was so funny.

I have 3 neighbors who all are big fans of Idol. One has already left it in the dirt, the other 2 are hanging on by a thread and once DWTS begins, there goes 2 of my neighbors and my niece.

I mean how is Idol gonna survive without my 2 neighbors and my niece?!

  • t2

Oh what I wouldn’t give to have heard Sean Michel sing “STOP…in the name of love…”

IMO, they are looking for a come from behind winner this year. Someone they can pimp as the success story of all success stories. They are pushing Melinda and Lakisha as front runners (because they are good) and they won’t win.

If they really want a come from behinder — I give you Haley.

And they will pimp the winner this year hard because my guess is voting is going to be way down and Cingular will not be happy about that.

  • Little Boy Blue

If you believe DIALIDOL at this stage of the game, then Chris Sligh and Stephanie are in danger….

    1-2 Melinda Doolittle – 14.85

    1-3 Lakisha Jones – 13.85

    2-5 Sanjaya Malakar – 10.74

    3-12 (B3) Jordin Sparks – 8.15

    3-12 (B3) Brandon Rogers – 7.86

    4-12 (B3) Phil Stacey – 6.8

    4-12 (B3) Gina Glocksen – 6.76

    4-12 (B3) Chris Richardson – 6.41

    4-12 (B3) Haley Scarnato – 6.15

    4-12 (B3) Blake Lewis – 6.06

    4-12 (B3) Chris Sligh – 5.93

    4-12 (B3) Stephanie Edwards – 5.91

JJ: I bet that Kevin and Melissa are kicking themselves right now because they know if they had tried out this year they would win the whole freakinà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ thing.

The judges would never have put them through to the voting rounds. They were too good.

Have we ever seen a Finals night with this many missed lyrics (including one dude who just stood there and waved his hands as if he was doing a group number in the Hollywood rounds), terrible arrangements (Rickey appears to be blameless this year) and off-key performances?

Okay, there probably has, but I’ve blocked those memories. This is a fresh wound.

On the other hand, I too thought Diana was helpful and sweet last night. And I can see why Ryan is so thin what with having to run all around the freakin’ studio in an attempt to make the show a little interesting.

  • radname

maybe the contestants picked songs that they were familiar with? i know that might sound weird to people who aren’t familiar with them, but whatever.

  • Ladybug

OK, so according to AI , the winners were as follows:
    Season 1 – Kelly Clarkson
    Season 2 – No one
Season 3 – Fantasia and (reluctantly) Jennifer Hudson
    Season 4 – Carrie Underwood
    Season 5 – Chris Daughtry

Just so’s I get my history revised here.

I was disappointed in Sligh. He looked like a fro-ed Pillsbury Doughboy and didn’t sing as well as he can.
Blake was ok, but he really does not have much of a voice.
Phil Stacey still scares the carp out of me. I am sure there is a horror flick who can use him to good effect.
None of the rest of those guys can sing in my view.

I am expecting a Diva-off, but fear there will be a canceling of votes on Melinda and Lakisha and someone else will get through ahead of them. Both were impressive last night with Lakisha having the slight edge to me, just because she underplayed the song.

I agree about Melinda needing to lose the wide-eyed innocent, little-ol-ME? act.

I liked Jordin last night and she has a very winning personality. I would not mind her going far up in the competition.

Lisa B! Great articles and thanks so much for the one on the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame yesterday. It was a glorious snark-fest.

  • http://stores.ebay.com/BookWomanBlues-Book-Nook Bobbi

I don’t think Melinda is acting. With a voice like hers, she should have been a lead singer ages ago. Because of her less than gorgeous looks, I am sure the girl went through some painful, ego destroying childhood and adolescent events that made her into someone who does NOT see themselves as “good enough” to be out front. I think she’s stunned that she is getting the reaction she is. Her reactions come across as quite genuine to me. It will take more than a few months of praise to reverse feelings that have been ground into her over years.

  • JJ

    I give you, Phil Stacey:

    http://thumbsnap.com/v/ONr75smc.gif

  • radname

i’m just saying, maybe the songs were sung to them as a baby (similar to Gina’s story), or maybe they remember hearing it and saying wow i remember that song, or maybe they tried to pick ones that people were unfamiliar with so that they wouldn’t be compared. plus there isn’t anything really great vocally/musically about the supremes..it was more diana ross’ unique voice, and catchy sound (that i don’t think can be reproduced today with all the over producing)

  • Masshole

Phil Stacey still scares the carp out of me. I am sure there is a horror flick who can use him to good effect. Ladybug

It seems ironic that the best song that was sung last night was actually a Billie Holiday song covered by Diana Ross.

Here’s a question for you vocal citiques out there…

GOD BLESS THE CHILD has actually been sung in the show 3 times by my count.

Mikalah Gordon did it ( and eventually recorded it ).
    SEE HERE :

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BO4AVPuphHY

(Got praise from all 3 judges too ).

Kat Mcphee wowed the judges with her a capella audition. SEE HERE :

Then, we had Lakisha’s understated version last night.

Which one do you think was the best ?

    I personally prefered Kat’s version.

She should be graciously accepting them instead of so disbelieving.

We’ll have to agree to disagree about Melinda though. I think she’s got a hurt way deep inside her that will take a looooooong time to exorcise. I’m thrilled for her that she’s getting the reaction she is because I’m sure it will help. But, if you read those articles LisaB posts, you have seen quite a few with people commenting on her physical attributes or lack thereof. I don’t think that’s anything compared to what she’s come through.

Anderson Cooper announced today (co-hosting on Regis and Kelly)that he is interviewing Simon Cowell this Sunday on 60 Minutes.

He also elaborated on how rich Simon is–that he makes money on every song from every idol artist around the entire world (Idol India, Idol Pakistan, Canadian Idol, etc. on top of the 25 million or so he gets a year for being a judge on Idol (did not mention the X Factor), $ from Il Divo, etc., etc. Said his deal with Sony BMG is reportedly worth $100 million…which Anderson said was about as much or more than Bruce Springsteen makes.

Maybe someone could put Phil somewhere and make him grow some hair just to see…..ahhh….who cares. I am SO not interested in ever seeing that guy sing another note again.

I forgot to mention earlier MISS Diana Ross last night was actually not bad. She had a sort of calming influence over the whole thing. Her song catalog sucks for the most part. And the Supremes’ songs need, well, The Supremes.

The song choices made by this “illustrious” top twelve, to me, were uniformly dull. Even the ones sung well. But, honestly, they are as unimaginative a bunch as Idol has ever had, so not unexpected.

What the hell will they do with British Invasion or Tony Bennett weeks???

Is this whole season going to be a snooze-fest?

Jennifer Hudson Considered For Aretha Franklin Biopic

…Aretha told Access Hollywood, “Well, I don’t know. I’m not sure. The producers want to know how I feel about it, about her playing me. What I’d like to see is three different people playing me.”

Although Aretha remains unconvinced about the Oscar-winning actress’ suitability for the role, she has seen other possible candidates.

She said, “There’s a young lady who opened the tribute show in Los Angeles that the United Negro College Fund gave me who was very good and I’ve heard another little girl who was quite good. Perhaps someone playing me from the age of 25 to about 40 and then someone else beyond that.”

Aretha also doubts that movie bosses will find anyone who can match her vocal prowess…

Yaà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ know, given the age of the contestants and their probable lack of knowledge about Diana Ross – and the Supremes, I canà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t figure how they come up with songs at all. It would take days to pick a song. Like to know how that is done.

I think they should ditch the stylist ( before she puts Sanjaya in pigtails or a bouffant) and put that money towards a song coach- someone who is familiar with all these back catalogues and can assist the idols into choosing appropriate songs for their voical range and personality.

I love Dial Idol! Know it’s not foolproof, but it does prepare us for the very probability of who might be bottom 3. Except for Stephanie being on the bottom, it delights me to see ChrisS, Blake, and ChrisR waaaaaa down there, and Brandon NOT! Doing a happy dance!

    Dial Idolà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s raw numbers show a different bottom threeà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’hereà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s the raw number ranking

What’s the difference between that and the predictions page here :

    http://dialidol.com/asp/predictions/Predictions.asp

    RE:
What the hell will they do with British Invasion or Tony Bennett weeks???

The mistake last night was insisting they limit their songs to the Diana Ross catalog. You can’t do that if you want singers to shine. HAd they broadened the theme to MOTOWN for instance, there would have been a wider variety to choose from.

The general rule is this — THE WIDER the leeway for choosing songs, the better chance the singers have to show their personal style and their wares.

If you limit the theme night to a genre not everyone is familiar with, they stink. How the heck is a Fray/Green Day type rocker like Sligh going to do Diana Ross ?

Remember Broadway night in Season 4 ? Even Bo Bice stunk that night ( actually if these kids did their musical history homework, Bo Bice could have done TOMMY for instance, but obviously, he wasn’t educated on that ).

It is no secret then that for instance, last season’s best theme was AMERICAN STANDARDS night where everyone did great ( except Kellie Pickler, who couldn’t do justice to BEWTICHED. Which tells us a lot — SHE IS LIMITED TO COUNTRY ( heck, she can’t even do Stevie Wonder the way Bucky did ) ). Why ? because AMERICAN STANDARDS night has a broad catalog of great legendary, memorable and most of all FAMILIAR songs to choose from and the music is varied.

MOVIE THEME NIGHTS always uniformly turned out good for AI in the past PRECISELY because there is room for singers to excel in their own style.

I am not worried for BRITISH INVASION night. The UK hs given us MANY singers and styles to choose from… from the Beatles, the Stones, U2, to hey — Andrew Lloyd Webber ( Haley Scarnato would love to be there ).

Tony Bennett night is going to be a disaster because he is an old school singer whose songs don’t get played on the radio anymore ( unless you listen to the oldies stations ).

However, if you BROADEN that night to make it say, BIG BAND night instead of limiting it to Tony Bennett’s catalog… then there could be room for some innovation. I think this can be done since Tony Bennett is a great cover artist and has done covers of many artists.

Suffice it to say you can generalize by saying — the narrower the catalog, the greater the chances of hearing singers stink, the broader the catalog, the greater the chances of hearing singers shine.

Dial Idolà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s raw numbers show a different bottom three…Phil Stacey
    Sanjaya Malakar, Chris Richardson.

Actually, the bottom 7 ( all of those with a rating of ’4-12′ each have an equal chance at being as high as 4th place, or as low as 12th place. If you click on the little box next with the percentage it will explain how to read the numbers.
So there really is no bottom 3 as far as DI is concerned.

Ahhhhh Sagie, I think we may disagree here. In every season of Idol there has been a “magic” moment by someone. Its a personal moment of course cause whats magical for me may not be for you.

Season one was Clarkson’s version of “Natural Woman” season 2 was Clay’s BOTW, Season 3 was Fantasia’s Summertime, season 4 was Bo’s AMAZING acapella of “In A Dream” and season 5 (for ME) was Taylor’s goose bumping performance of YASB.

I think every season of Idol has had magic….EXCEPT this one even WITH spectacular talent like Melinda and LaKisha.

LBB: Well, probably unsuprisingly I like Kat’s best. I think she did a really good job of putting her own stamp on the song (although I haven’t heard Mikalah’s version and can’t listen to it at work, I’ll try to check it out when I get home). I would love to hear Kat do the whole song someday.

I am personally not nearly as wild about Lakisha as the judges. She is a very good singer, and it is nice while I am watching one of her performances. But after the performance is over I don’t really have a desire to listen to it again and I am not particularly interested in what she will do next week. For me the criticism that the judges often bring out about not being unique or being too copycat kind of applies to Lakisha. She does the songs very well, but not much “it” factor for me.

Lakisha has been my pick from auditions, she has a fantastic voice but something else that most of the others are missing…soul. Last week I said Melinda needs to get over that hokey oh you love me thing,it is definitely a turn off. Remember she thanked her vocl coach and her stylist last week and we are supposed to believe her oh golly gee routine. Anyone bright enough to have those 2 around knows she’s good so get with it already.

Jordin is such a beautiful, poised 17 year old. I hated the song, sap city, but her voice was gorgeous, she reminded me of Christina Aguilera.I actually think she will begin to get some pimping if she keeps up her performances because she has a current sound unlike Melinda and Lakisha who sound old school. And current means big bucks in record sales.

    Catching up…

    - That story about J’Hud and Fantasia whooping it up in Chicago, drinking and carrying on is total BS. They may have been clubbing, but Jennifer does not drink alcohol… ever. I know this to be true.

    - Idol ignoring last year’s winner is unforgivable. No, he hasn’t sold a gazillion CDs, but he deserves some mention. They are pissing me off with this, bigtime

    - The judges and producers are to blame for this Titanic of a season. They’re the ones that put these losers through to H’wood. Sanjaya? WTF were they thinking. Now the kid is starting to act a little cocky. I want to barf.

    - Last year during the top 12 round, Melissa McGhee forgot the words to her song and was booted the next night. So, with three people blowing the lyrics, it would come down to who blew them the worst, and that would be Brandon, who after losing his place in the song began flapping his arms around like a duck. It was embarassing!

    - Eleven more weeks of this is unfathomable. This season is the worst ever, beating out the previous worst season (3), by a mile. At least during season three we had George Huff.

Raw numbers don’t indicate anything on Dial Idol because they are limited to the votes by people who use the system. The predictions are based on % of busy signals which is much more accurate.

This year is so different from last year on Dial Idol because there are 2 clear front runners and everyone else is too close to make a good prediction. The only thing that is obvious is that Sanjaya, Melinda and Lekisha are safe.

I donà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t think Melinda is acting. With a voice like hers, she should have been a lead singer ages ago. Because of her less than gorgeous looks, I am sure the girl went through some painful, ego destroying childhood and adolescent events that made her into someone who does NOT see themselves as à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“good enoughà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ to be out front. I think sheà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s stunned that she is getting the reaction she is. Her reactions come across as quite genuine to me. It will take more than a few months of praise to reverse feelings that have been ground into her over years.

I agree, Bobbi. I think it’s genuine. And…. her vocals are absolutely amazing. She may very well not win AI, but I don’t see her in the background ever again with that kind of voice. Somebody somewhere will snatch her up faster than they did last year’s “winner”, Chris Daughtry. (I could have sworn it was Taylor who won)

I started to watch what’s his names video of My home’s in Alabama that Missy linked above. He sounds great but, if someone next to me is screaming like that through a song where he is just sitting quietly, strumming a guitar with a nice vocal, I will slug them! Let the man sing. We know you love him, that’s why your here!

  • emeralgem

Did the screams of à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“We love you Taylorà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ and other high-pitched wails during à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“My Homeà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s In Alabamaà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ annoy anyone else? All I wanted to do was hear his voice.

Wow, Mass. It’s incredible what some people survive.

I agree. I think Melinda has endured some bone crushing rejection in her life at some point. It’s going to take a while for her to not be a mouse.

Not everyone is strong. Not everyone survives.

She can sing and that’s good enough for me.

  • undecided

Boy all that screaming sure sucked. He sounded great in between the wooing and the shushing.

RE: Taylor’s solo guitar version of MY HOME’s IN ALABAMA

GOSH I HATE THESE FANS WHO KEEP SCREAMING. PIPE DOWN FOR ONCE AND LET THE MAN SING FOR ONCE !!

Can’t they save their applause till the end of the song ? This is so annoying.

However, I look forward to him re-recording it as an encore in his next album ( simple acoustics please ).

  • Little Boy Blue

The only thing that is obvious is that Sanjaya, Melinda and Lekisha are safe.

To paraphrase Simon, if Sanjaya makes it to the top 6, I’ll quit watching.

Second of all, apparently Taylor doesnt realize he’s with me now. Ahm from NYS so that makes him a NY boy. Can someone tell him that he’s been adopted by a bunny from NYS and he has to sing NY State of Mind no matter WHAT state he’s in.

Taylor has concocted a surprise for every state he visits.

    GEORGIA in Atlanta

WILL THE CIRCLE BE UNBROKEN at the Ryman in Tennessee in honor of Johnny Cash and June Carter who performed there.

MY HOME’s IN ALABAMA in Birmingham

I’m sure he’ll do WHEN THE SAINTS GO MARCHING IN in New Orleans.

And since Taylor does Billy Joel, NY STATE OF MIND is on top of my list as his encore.

  • Missy

It was amazing how Taylor moved from this

There is injured and there is profoundly injured. I grew up with a mother that hated me, refused to pick me up at all as a baby because I was so homely, tried to kill me more than once, and a professional father who didà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t know I existed until the IQ tests rolled in, while he let his wife batter his children with no rescue. Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢m over it, but Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢m not 26 and I sure wasnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t over it then. Took many years. Confidence? You gotta be kidding.

Mass, thats more information than I needed to hear BUT, she is a background singer. She knows that she has a good voice or else she would not have a profession in singing. Now she tries out for Idol and she sails on through. I said it before, once, twice, three or four times I can overlook it but this is on the brink of ridiculous now.

YOU dear Mass had no real skills at 26 Im assuming. Many of us dont. We’re late bloomers but SHE can sing and she KNOWS she can sing cause she does it for a profession!

I think you are projecting your rejection (which BTW I am not sure at all I would have survived that as a child at all so your a very strong person just for the fact of being able to get through that shattering existence)on to Melinda. I had a nurturing mother and grandmother and a big ole Italian family to lean on. I had it good. It wasnt until I got older that life started to suck.

PS, you said you were over it. I dont believe it. I dont think you ever get over that kind of rejection especially when it happens as a child. Those scars are lifetime ones.

  • Lu

Still really missing AI5 but I’m thrilled for Elliott. My oldest daughter who has been hooked on idol since AI3, told me (after she saw Sanjaya – ugh) that she was going upstairs to read because the show was boring… no truer words were ever spoken imo.

  • thedingoateyobaby

hahah Dingo, you should have heard me calling a friend last year that I knew was big into Idol to make sure there wasn’t any charges or anything funky when I called in to vote! It honestly never dawned on me before to pick up the phone, using my own time to vote? lol Let along for every minute of two hours! And we won’t even talk about the GO phone…. nope, not a word!

  • lynnie

she is a background singer. She knows that she has a good voice or else she would not have a profession in singing. Now she tries out for Idol and she sails on through.

But Dingo, compare her to Brandon, who was also a background singer, and sang with some very well known, successful artists on big tours.
I had high hopes for him but seriously, he is just not cutting it as a front man.
It’s very different being an anonymous singer singing woowoo’s in the shadows than having to carry the whole song by yourself, out in front, for the world to see and love.
I’m sure this is an entirely new experience for her. She’s not stuck in the past – she’s going through growing pains. The point is, she is growing, and soon she will have earned the confidence that her talent deserves.

How difficult would it have been to have this montage last night at AI ….

    Kelly Clarkson wins Grammies

    Fantasia, a star in Broadway,

Daughtry a double platinum recording star

Carrie Underwood, a double Grammy winner and CMT winner

    Jennifer Hudson, an OSCAR winner

Clay Aiken, a triple platinum recording star and successful touring artist ( any clip you like )

Ruben Studdard, a Grammy nominated star ( any clip you like )

What’s-his-name, drawing in sold out crowds in his solo national concerts ( clips of the screaming crowds at the Ryman or the Tabernacle ) ?

    That’ll take 6 seconds tops.

  • Metta

I just had a thought re. Melinda. Maybe the facial expressions we’re seeing are like tics. Involuntary, a habit formed over the years. Maybe it has nothing to do with how she’s feeling.

Oh heavens, Taylor sounds good on that video – Thanks, Missy!

  • Lisa B

She is one of the most experienced one’s there, to get that experience she knows she has a good voice. One of her friends is Mandisa, so therefore knows the pitfalls of AI and which one’s are important to avoid.

Melinda’s interviews with Cat Deeley have been dreadful, there’s humble and then there is plain ridiculous, she has been in the latter for a couple of weeks now.

  • shar

Mass, isn’t it sad how inhuman humans can be? I have a sister who is an alcoholic. When she is sober, she is a good mother to my nephew, her only child. When she is drinking, she yells at him, belittles him, throws things at him, you get the picture.

Kyle stays with us every weekend and some evenings, he is a wonderful young man but quite shy and very sensitive.I adore him and I think he will e moving in with us permanently after this school year.

Sometimes people who are abused turn out to be wonderful people, those who can give and who sympathize and empathize with others who have problems. Both you and my nephew seem to be of that type.

  • Lisa B

I’m sure Taylor is delighted with the lack of pimping from AI, he gets to distance himself much sooner than the others, if at all in some cases.

  • thedingoateyobaby

Oh Lynnie, alright. I know its much different but she has to know that she can sing cause if she couldnt then she would not be a background singer. No one would hire her.

Ahm gonna give her one more week and then thats it. If she cant handle this then its entirely possible that being a lead singer is not her calling.

Even Simon was a little put off by her emotion until she explained that it was being on such a big stage with all those people and her alone that they were screaming for. So ok, she gets a free pass for THIS week but next week she has to check that shit at the door.

  • Masshole

YOU dear Mass had no real skills at 26 Im assuming.. Dingo
    *********************************

I had incredible skills at 26. I was an fantastic athlete; I was recommended for a Ford Foundation Grant I didn’t follow thru on because I didn’t feel I deserved it. I was told I should be a painter and I should do it professionally, but didn’t follow thru because I thought I was lousy. AND, I could sing – really, really well. People would stop to listen when I sang and as soon as they did, I couldn’t continue. Was asked to join bands, but had such horrendous stage fright I couldn’t sing when I got up there unless I was drunk. I KNEW I could sing, just couldn’t do it unless I became an alcoholic.

I was one of those people who was told they could be anything they wanted to be. Humbug.

Yes, I may be projecting rejection, but Melinda so looks like she expects to get bashed if she does anything. The world is a hostile place for some and I expect one of them is Melinda.

I haven’t seen any of her interviews with Cat, so can’t speak to that. My point is that despite lots of experience as a backup singer, it doesn’t necessarily mean you have the voice and talent to make it as a headline artist.
Case in point, Brandon. He is also one of the most experienced ones there, with a good voice. But he’s been dismal so far. So apparently, to be a headliner, you need more than a good voice and experience as a backup singer.
It’s entirely conceiveable to me that Melinda truly didn’t know if she could make the transition. She is just now finding out that she can. Her confidence will grow as she gets more headlining experience on the show.
I don’t begrudge her anything- she can cry and be humble as much as she wants as she gets used to being a star!

Melinda doesn’t bother me. Maybe she’s just painfully shy and has a hard time being praised. I love her persona when singing and she will in time develop one for interviews, etc.

Do we know what next week’s theme will be yet? Maybe we’ll find out tonight. I’m just hoping that other than the front runners that Blake, Chris S, Stephanie, and Gina live on. I guess it’s too much to hope for Sanjaya to leave but would be fine with either Haley or Brandon to go.

    Masshole at 11:00 am ~

    I heart you.

I march to a different drummer here than most – having different favorites (except for Taylor) than most – but we like who we like, for reasons only we may know or choose, and the beauty of mj’s is that we get to say so without being beaten up for our personal likes and dislikes. :)

I actually like Phil’s voice. I DON’T like his bald head and ears that stick out, but I think he sings better than most of the other guys. I can’t stand Blake or either of the Chris’s. Feel sorry for Sanjaya, but he’s really out of his league. Have wanted Brandon to come through with a break-out performance so bad, but so far he just hasn’t.

I like Haley, too – maybe because no one else here seems to and she needs someone to like her. LOL!

Melinda is my favorite of ALL, but after last night, Jordin’s right behind her!

  • shar

Hey wait a minute, Clooney is up for the bid? Hot damn, could I just rent him at a discount for a night or two?

I don’t think Jordin is in the same league, vocally, with Lakisha or Melinda and she still lacks emotional depth when singing, but she is just gorgeous, gorgeous, very winsome, and I really, really like her. :)

Did anybody else hear that Melinda has a lisp? I never noticed it before, not even when I was watching the show earlier, but I just listened to an mp3 download on my PC and there it surely was.

    Hugs to Masshole…

Incase we forget, the key word for AI is instant success. If you are not tearing up the charts or Receiving accolades at this present time you don’t count. Who cares what Clay and Ruben did two years ago. Who cares if Taylor is selling out his venues. It all boils down to a show be able to brag to the world that they make you an instant STAR…Taylor is not buring up the charts nor is he receiving accolades.. That’s how AI operates whether we like it or not..

After watching that clip with Taylor, I must say, the guy knows how to put on a show..

  • http://blog.syracuse.com/idolthoughts/ foxydonna

Maybe I’m gullible, but I appreciate the way Melinda is behaving and hope that she remains true to herself in the weeks to come. Better this than acting entitled and arrogant. It is possible to be a nice person and stay nice on this show. George Huff is proof of that. He wasn’t acting and I don’t think she is either.

Usually just lurking here but just had to put in my two cents worth.
Does anyone else feel that this season is just really lacking anybody exciting??? Sure there are some good voices, Lakisha, Melinda, (sorry
I did not get into Jordin last night – the high notes ruined it for me)
but even KiKi and Melinda lack excitement.
Even if you weren’t a fan you have to admit that Taylor provided
excitement and pure entertainment last season. And where is a cute
Kellie Pickler this year who made us laugh every week.
I’m just not feeling it and I am the original AI junkie from Season one I’ve never missed a show. This year I am tempted to Tivo and just watch Lakisha.

ps.. Taylor is not mentioned at all this season. Taylor bought out his 19 contract and I’m sure they resent it. But Taylor is and will continue to do just fine as he keeps it real (compared to what?). He’s living his dream and the numbers will eventually follow.
Thanks for letting me vent !!!!

I never noticed it. If there’s anyone who would have had a lisp but doesn’t, it’s Gina.

Diana Ross asked her to “pronunciate” the words correctly ( I tried to find the word in the dictionary, it just isn’t there… however, there’s another word that can be used — enunciate ).

Anyway, I’ve always wondered how Gina can “pronunciate” words with that silver tongue stub she insists on having…

I don’t think it just about instant success and thus TPTB are boosting about those idols. I actually think it is plain old fashioned favoritism. Those 5 Idols are who TPTB like and thus the pimping continues.

I say this because Ruben’s initial sales surpassed Fantasia’s and both their sophomore albums bombed yet Fantasia is being pimped and Ruben is not.

I think something happened along the way that we are not privy too and that is why TPTB do not mention Clay anymore eventhough he has the second best CD sales of a debut album of any Idol (for now). Also the fact that he was forced to do a cover album which bombed makes me think he is out of TPTB’s favor as well.

Those 5 are the chosen ones unless they get on TPTB bad side.

  • Little Boy Blue

I canà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t stand Chris Rà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s dancing, if you can call it that, or his nasality.

Sorry, Taylors not out of recoupment

I like this review from Bruce at Foxes on Idol. I am not going to link it because they have a ton of pop ups. Bruce was a big Taylor fan last year,he is the guy who said Taylor’s voice after YASB was like sandpaper on raw silk. He also said about ITG,I want to hear more, please Taylor record this masterpiece. He obviously is a brilliant music critic and has impeccable taste.

Anyway, here is what he said about Lakisha.

BRUCE: She grabbed the audience by the throat and didn’t let go. Gorgeous music just erupts from somewhere inside this woman and it’s a joy to listen to that voice. If I haven’t said it before I’ll say it now. This lady has the skills, control, passion, and soul to become the next Mahalia Jackson. 10

Amen brother, can I get a hallelujah? I would love to have AI bring Reuben back this year to sing a gospel song with her. I predict there wouldn’t be a dry eye in the house, except for probably Simon. Paula would have to have a stretcher brought in for sure.

  • vegasdee

Des, your not an oddball, I think Phil is good too, last night was one of his better, if not best performances but he needs to put the hat back on. I loved ChrisS, Lakisha, Melinda, and Blake don’t love how the judges treated Chris and Blake that was weird. I actually kind of liked Hayley maybe because I love that song, and I really didn’t think her pitch was all over the place. Brandon continues to disappoint me, maybe the knoll twoppers are right and he is throwing in the towel……on another note, Mandy Moore was on my radio this morn, for an hour long interview, her manager, some dude Jon Lashay? is Taylor’s manager too, she gave a nice shout out to Taylor. What was cool about her interview, she was doing press for her new album, is that she went to her old label and told them this is the producer I want to work with, and I’m going to write all the songs, old label was cool with it at first, and than decided that she couldn’t do it her way. She said nothing is worse than singing other peoples pop-dreck songs, so since she couldn’t do it her way, she left old label, and then signed with The Firm’s new label and got to do everything she wanted to do her way. She said she loved the experience becasue there was not any “suits” telling her what to sing, and how to sing it. It was a cool interview.

Thank you Missy for that link. It was a very special moment indeed, despite the screaming idiots.

  • Metta

I donà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t think it just about instant success and thus TPTB are boosting about those idols. I actually think it is plain old fashioned favoritism. Those 5 Idols are who TPTB like and thus the pimping continues.

Nope, it’s all about what’s in it for them. As far as Fantasia is concerned, Simon may like her on a personal level, but that’s not why the AI machine pimps her. She has industry cred and was the first Idol to get that. That makes AI look good. Chris lines their pockets. That’s what he brings to the table. The minute he stops moving units, they’ll have no use for him.

  • bean99

I think MJ’s completely right about the judges last night. If you did a straight version of a song you got criticised (except for a few) and if you mixed things up you got criticised. I can only guess that they really want a girl to win this season but they could give a break to some of the poor guys that had to be subjected to singing Diana Ross songs. :wacko_tb:

Lara: Kirsten – does this mean Elliottà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s single, à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Movin Onà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ , didnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t chart this past week in digital downloads? The week before I think it was around 26K. Thanks

I disagree. Fantasia is NOT lining their pockets so there is no reason to pimp her. Fantasia is a favorite of AI and is the producers’ favorite from Season 3.

    It is old fashioned favoritism.

In terms of Chris I see a dual purpose in their pimping. First of all, it is a symbiotic relationship where Chris is pimped because he is successful and he’s success is partly because of the pimping. But I also think TPTB need to show that Chris is a successful rock artist because they want to show that they are titans in the music industry in general thus not just Pop but in Country, R&B, and Rock. Thus the continued pimping to make sure he is a success.

  • CarieB

Funniest thing I heard this morning was the AI hairdresser’s interview where he said that Haley’s hairstyle last night was achieved using ***’s hair extensions from last year. Since *** didn’t want to pay for them, he washed them up and recycled them for Haley.

He also said Sanjaya’s hairstyle was completely Sanjaya’s idea. He wasn’t trying to look like Miss Ross, but rather Mr. Sligh.

Since I’m not digging the show at all this year, I find these tidbits extra juicy and fun.

Haley does remind me of a “poor man’s Kat”. She is pretty but not as pretty as Kat and her voice is nice but much weaker than Kat’s as well.

You guys are pretty tough! Kinda amazed at the personal (non-musical) dissection of the AI kids — could any of us stand up to such scrutiny, while being dissed for every single move we make or word we say? Hey, it’s the singing and entertaining that’s the issue here. Other than being brutally honest about that, can we cut these folks some slack? Like, hey, they’re human beings — and young ones? No wonder La Diana wanted to mother them!

I don’t know if Melinda’s thing is an “act” or not, it may just be a natural response to an obviously overwhelming situation. Certainly, one hopes she’ll get more comfortable soon because all that humility can be, well, irritating — but to say “I’ve had it!” with her for that reason seems harsh.

at any rate, I’m with Foxydonna on this one, and on the mess this season is so far. Most of these kids are way, way out of their depth.

As for the British Invasion, I’m pretty terrified about what songs the finalists will select. They skipped most of Diana’s best Supremes numbers last night, and their lack of musical history literacy and/or the advice they’re getting from whomever on song choices is sort of appalling.

The safest thing for them all to do for Brit Nite is find the Beatle song that really fits best and grab it fast — “Ticket to Ride” and “Hide Your Love Away” for the better guys, “Let It Be” for LaKisha, “Good Day Sunshine,” “Eleanor Rigby’….hey, John and Paul wrote a gem or two!

  • squishy

    JJ,

I didn’t make myself clear so let me try to explain better. Metta’s point is that TPTB are pimping Fantasia because she has “cred” in the industry. My point is that it has nothing to do with “cred” or lining of the pockets in Fantasia’s case but just plain old fashioned favoritism. Metta and I just have different opinions of why all this pimpage and that is okay.

While AI might have sweeped the ratings last night they really dropped from last year:
    Season 6: 1st hour – 16.0/26, #2; adults 18-49: 10.7, #2
    2nd hour – 18.1/28, #1; adults 18-49: 12.4, #1

    Season 5: 1st hour – 17.4/27, #2; adults 18-49: 12.4, #2
    2nd hour – 19.5/29, #1; adults 18-49: 14.7, #1

I don’t get so many people raving about “Kiki” including the judges. IMO, she peaked the first weak with the Jennifer song.

Your point was perfectly clear. However, OMG I can’t believe I’m going to say this, METTA is right. There is no such thing as plain old favoritism. TPTB is in it for the money. They are not going to do anything that is not going to line their pockets in some way. In the case of Fantasia it looks good because she has industry cred. It’s a business.

I donà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t love how the judges treated Chris and Blake that was weird.

It was the fact that they “re-arranged” the Diana Ross songs to their own styles that the judges didn’t like. Paula and Simon were in agreement on this one.

I of course disagree with them ( especially with Blake’s versions ). Chris Sligh, I can’t say much. The song was carpy ( TM ) to begin with and no amount of re-arranging is going to make it nice ( plus you can’t do a solo on a song that is well known to be a duet ).

The judges keep on harping about making the song “your own” and telling people not to be a karaoke clone. Well, when someone tries to do his own take on the song, they go back and say how much they prefer the original artist’s version.

What’s a guy like Blake to do, become the male version of Diana Ross ?

  • Little Boy Blue

While AI might have sweeped the ratings last night they really dropped from last year:

MSNBC has an article that has the title :

THE IDOL DECLINE HAS BEGAN ( sorry if already posted ).

    http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/17351018/

But the part of the article that reveals the mentality behind why they believe this is so is the fact that they blame Taylor Hicks for winning but not selling more than Chris Daughtry….

In short, they actually buy into the concept that the winner MUST sell the most post-idol or the show loses its credibility !!

    EXCERPT :

Other signs, too, point toward the seriesà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ slipping appeal. A Billboard analyst predicts that Taylor Hicksà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ poorly performing album may be the first winnerà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s album to not sell 1 million copies. Season-five winner Taylorà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s first single debuted last summer with respectable numbers, but compared to other à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Idolà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ winners and runners-up, his first-week single sales were easily beaten by Clay Aiken, Ruben Studdard, and Kelly Clarkson.

Someone who lost to Taylor, Chris Daughtry, is topping the charts, and has almost sold 2 million copies of his album. While he (and Carrie Underwood, and others) prove that Idols can still sell records, whatà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s the point of a talent competition where the losers are better than the winners?

Part of the showà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s contract with viewers is that the show is a legitimate à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“idolà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ -maker, even if the showà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s contract also makes viewers responsible for the outcome. Without winners who succeed, the showà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s title will become as irrelevant as that of à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Americaà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s Next Top Model,à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ which produces engaging drama but has yet to produce an actual top model. If à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Idolà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ canà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t bring the drama, which it certainly isnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t doing this year, then FOX better start selecting a nice tombstone, or at least looking for a replacement.

This might be a first, but I agree with you LBB. :smile1_tb: I didn’t mind that Chris S rearranged the song but it still sounded like a ballad (didn’t really see the Coldplay similarity) so didn’t improve it at all imo. Blake at least updated the song he did but wish he’d chosen something different.

    RE: Haley

Simonà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s comments were actually nice to her.

A lot of discussion last year about Simon playing the “reverse psychology” card after he learned his lesson for making Jasmine Trias cry ( when he told her she’d be going home ). The victim then was of course, the vastly talented Latoya London.

It may well be that he’s being kind in order for voters to get complacent and *not* vote for Haley. Kicking her when she feels down will only galvanize voters to sympathize with her.

  • squishy

    Little Boy Blue,

The Season 2 the AI “loser”, Clay Aiken topped the winner Ruben and still there was no decline of the show. Thus Chris Daughtry topping Taylor Hicks is not the reason why the show is in decline.

I think the decline of the show this season is the lack of diversity in the Idols. Last season was for even the AI producer Ken Warwick what he called an “almost perfect season” in that there was a range of music genres and personalities that everybody could root for.

    This season not so much.

With that said, Idol still beats everybody else in the ratings so I wouldn’t play “Taps” so soon for AI.

  • Little Boy Blue

Taylor hasn’t been pimped by AI yet because he hasn’t done anything worth pimping. His CD sold pretty well in the first week or so and has been dropping ever since. He’s not on the charts whereas Chris is consistently at the top of them every week. It’s a no brainer all the recognition goes to the guy selling records.
If we’re mad about Taylor we can be mad at just about anyone. What about Justin Guarini and his new job on the TV guide channel? Why not mention that. What about Ruben? He’s sold well and won some shit. Diana Degarmo? She was a hit on broadway. What about Elliott and Bucky who are comming out with CD’s? How about Kellie who went gold? What about Kat who also sold well and has a top 40 single? How about Kimberly Locke? Bo Bice? They haven’t mentioned Clay yet either and his records pretty much sold exactly like Taylor’s did. I can go on and on about all these people. Bottom line is, they’re not going to mention everyone that has been successful off idol. They’re just going to mention who has done REALLY well. Enough to brag about.
And yes, Taylor won, but he’s a sucky winner and that shit doesn’t matter on this show anyway.

Nadia Turner tried to do MY LOVE in Season 4… it fell short.

Melinda’s “golly, gosh..you like me” approach is coming in for a lot of criticism here and elsewhere. You know, it really isn’t surprising that a not-that-goodlooking woman who has admitted to having OCD is not used to being accepted in an industry which is image driven.

OCD all by itself is enough to make many of it’s victims never ever ever do anything that might make them conspicuous. It’s a very self-confidence destroying mental illness. From her seeming out-of-body experience while performing to her little interview snippet saying that her stage “personna” is a separate person who she says has an actual name, I would guess that in order to go out there and put herself up for judging, she has to do quite a lot of mental calesthenics.

She has an incredible vocal talent, and I give her serious props for having the courage to push past her fears.

Thanks for the link to the ratings slip. It would be alot worse except the other channels are putting carp up against the Death Star. If there was anything decent on, “Dancing with the Stars” for example, the ratings would be even worse. Unless something dramatic happens, I expect the ratings to continue to decline. There is no drama and not much talent. The leading 2 or 3 divas are running up the score on a bunch of scrubs. Who can keep watching that? I still don’t get the lack of diversity in the genres. That’s why the viewership soared in the first place. I remember the producers saying they didn’t want any Taylor, Chris or Elliotts this year. Okay, you got what you wanted.

  • Lisa B

The problem is the mass signings last year coupled with the lack of diversity this year imo.

  • http://www.idolicious.com Kat

And to add to the debate (b/c class is boring)…winning AI SHOULD mean that TPTB back you. It’s “American Idol,” NOT “American Idol, unless we like someone better, in which case we will dump all our resources into them and pretend you never existed.”

I know there are discrepancies because Chris is keeping it all in the family by being managed by 19, whereas Kat and Taylor went outside for management. But still, Sony/BMG is the element they all have in common. Taylor does not have a video. Taylor had to wait two months to get a single. Taylor’s songs are not being used in American Idol commercials. Taylor’s video is not being shown across movie theater screens. Is this The Firm’s fault? AI’s? Sony’s? I have no clue. But it’s someone’s.

They want to pimp Chris’s umpteen million CDs, that’s fine. I’ve got no problem with that. But if you win American Idol, you should get their full backing. Chris has a radio hit; no reason not to use Taylor’s song on the americanidol.com commercial, or as the boot song, you know? Keep Chris in the pimp montage but give the winner his fucking due. If you’re not going to do that, and if you’re not going to respect the people who invested the time to vote for the man, why are we even holding a competition? Why doesn’t Nigel just crown the one he likes best? Why doesn’t Clive just cherry-pick from the Top 24?

  • jpfan

The problem is 1) mass signings = winning means nothing. Taylor completely gets the shaft this year. It’s all Chris 2)either America is out of talent or judges/producers stopped looking for it. This crew (with a few exceptions) are beyond lame 3)No back stories. Except for a few (most already gone), this bunch are boring. I need more soap opera in my reality TV. No one is predicting the immediate end, but this is def an off year. Hope they can recover.

Exactly. If the formula for voting doesn’t work – then why bother voting. Without voting, there is no emotional investment in the contestants. Without emotional investment, why bother watching. It’s just become a glorified version of Star Search.

It’s true that AI is still leading the pack in ratings – but considering that the other stations have cleared the way for them they should be raking in the numbers this season not dropping from last season. Once some competition (e.g. Dancing with the Stars) comes back into play, I expect to see some larger drops. Sure the show will stick around for a few more years but IMHO I think they saw their peak last season.

  • Little Boy Blue

I don’t know about you guys, but as I see it, the singers who people are not impressed with in the show “happen” to be the ones who have the most “current” and “saleable” 21st century sounds.

Chris Sligh has his Green day/Coldplay sound.

Blake Lewis’ beatboxing might be a decade too old, but he still sounds current.

Chris Richardson can make a record that “could” ( emphasis )potentially ( emphasis ) sell to the Sexyback crowd.

Jordin Sparks is a little too on the “plump” side to be the next Jojo or Nelly Furtado, but Jenny Craig can solve that problem.

As for Melinda and Lakisha, the two Chosen ones, tell me how their sound will sell in today’s pop environment. I am really at a loss as to how they can do it…

Melinda does not have that sexy/sultry/sassy vibe around her. Are they going to sell her to the urban A/C market ?
Can Melinda be sold as a Mary J. Blige kinda singer ?

How about Lakisha ? She strikes me as a younger version of Aretha… will that sell today ?

  • CarieB

I don’t really think it’s due to last year’s “winner” not being a success in terms of cd sales, it simply comes down to this season’s contestants are boring, both with their backstories and, more importantly to me, in their performances to date. They are diverse enough. They are just not making people “feel” them. JMO.

  • Little Boy Blue

Taylorà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s video is not being shown across movie theater screens.

Ahh… but Kat’s will. In fact there is a new marketing strategy for selling OVER IT as a pre-show package that will be shown on thousands of theaters before the main movie is shown.

They want to pimp Chrisà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s umpteen million CDs, thatà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s fine. Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ve got no problem with that. But if you win American Idol, you should get their full backing. Chris has a radio hit; no reason not to use Taylorà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s song on the americanidol.com commercial, or as the boot song, you know? Keep Chris in the pimp montage but give the winner his fucking due. If youà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢re not going to do that, and if youà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢re not going to respect the people who invested the time to vote for the man, why are we even holding a competition? Why doesnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t Nigel just crown the one he likes best? Why doesnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t Clive just cherry-pick from the Top 24?

    WORD WORD WORD!!!

Why not pick 10 clones of Kelly Clarkson and be DONE with it, ya know. That way, they will for CERTAIN get who they want.

As far as Taylor’s career, he does NOT NEED pimping from AI. He will build a career on his OWN terms that will last decades. He may not get double, triple or quadruple platinum, but he will continue to sell out his concerts, makes albums, and go on his merry way. Take comfort in that folks. Taylor will be around LONG after AI goes off the air and fades off into the sunset. Trust me on that.

    Just take a look – http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G82War-z5T0

Ahhà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ¦ but Katà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s will. In fact there is a new marketing strategy for selling OVER IT as a pre-show package that will be shown on thousands of theaters before the main movie is shown

Taylor is too smart to waste his money on that sort of ad campaign.

Not to add fuel to the fire, but I have a feeling that Chris is going to be on the finale. I heard a radio interview with Ace and they asked about Chris and he said he was proud of him and couldn’t wit to see him when he came to town for the finale. Or something like that. Oh, and Chris is co-writing one of Ace’s songs.

I have a feeling Brandon is leaving tonight. I guess he deserves it for forgetting those lyrics, but he wasn’t the worst for me at all. I don’t understand what his problem is, exactly. It’s frustrating.

Ahem. Not to brag or anything…

Ok, I’m going to brag. Andy Denhart who wrote that MSNBC piece on the decline of Idol has been keeping up with my “ratings watch” since last season. He’s linked to my stats at least twice on his blog, most recently a couple of weeks ago.

It will make for good covnersation and perhaps boost ratings as it will be like a rematch of Muhammad Ali vs. Joe Frazier and I’m sure TPTB would like to see that happen.

Speaking for myself, the further Taylor gets from AI, the BETTER off he will be. They are just dragging him down now, and he doesn’t need the headache.

He’s on his own now, and will do fine at the end of the day.

  • CarolinHouston

Taylor won, but heà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s a sucky winner and that shit doesnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t matter on this show anyway.

Tell that to the people going to his concerts that are getting terrific reviews. I went to the first Birmingham one and I’d never seen such a terrific up tempo show in my life! Tell that to all the people buying over $200 worth of merchandise to the left and to the right of me and all around me! Taylor’s having a wonderful time touring…it was his dream. I doubt he’d call himself a “sucky” winner.

  • http://www.idolicious.com Kat

donà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t know about you guys, but as I see it, the singers who people are not impressed with in the show à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“happenà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ to be the ones who have the most à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“currentà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ and à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“saleableà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ 21st century sounds.

Actually, LBB, that’s an interesting point. I’ve noticed a lot of Internet grumbling this season about themes and “old-fashioned” singers/song choices. A lot of it strikes me as immature teenage whining of the “omg that songs so old my PARENTS listen to it!!11″ variety. And personally, I enjoy both old and new music, and my iTunes library may have a lot of Aretha, Stevie, the Mamas and the Papas, Ray Charles, etc., but it’s also got a lot of new and modern stuff.

But as much as it’s refreshing when Blake or Chris S. bust out the Jamiroquai or the Mute Math, there’s a reason why Aretha and Stevie songs are still so popular–they’re GOOD, and they resonate with people. They’re also more malleable. Blake has made some interesting song choices, but beatboxing aside, he’s sung them note-for-note and hasn’t displayed that he’s a talented or emotive vocalist. That’s a problem that Chris Daughtry had last year, until he was handed some more classic (or at least older) songs, and managed to put his own spin on them (the Bryan Adams song, “What a Wonderful World,” etc.). If the contestants want to do modern music, I’m all for it, but it can’t be modern just for the sake of modernity, because then it becomes a gimmick. “LOOK AT ME!!! I’M SINGING 311!” Okay, and that’s cool and all, but are you singing it well, and more importantly, do I care? There’s a lot of modern music out there that requires the vocal histrionics this show loves, or at the very least, requires some real depth and emotion. It’s not about the show or the audience “ganging up” on modern song choices–it’s about the contestants making shitty modern song choices and expecting us to love them just because they’re bucking the trend.

Can you tell I really hate this season?

  • gemlake

//Someone who lost to Taylor, Chris Daughtry, is topping the charts, and has almost sold 2 million copies of his album. While he (and Carrie Underwood, and others) prove that Idols can still sell records, whatà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s the point of a talent competition where the losers are better than the winners?//
Putting aside whether Chris is “better” because his sound is more current and popular, I agree that this is a huge issue. Chris is being treated like the winner, no question.

And what about Kellie Pickler? Hammered by the judges her last two weeks, out in 6th, she then gets her cd released first, with a real single and video, a gold cd which is charting higher than the winner right now and has her own sitcom in the works. And she’s appeared on the show.

So why bother? If you like Blake, forget voting for him, it may be better if he goes out 5th or 6th and has more time to write songs and record.

Taylor was always TOO GOOD for AI – he used them for his own agenda and he triumphed. I sure HOPE that his book, coming out in July, will reveal what really went on behind the scenes of AI and the aftermath of his win – the The Firm, 19E and the TPTB. I can’t wait to read it.

I thought you wanted Taylor to distance himself from Idol. Why would you want a Taylorà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s song to be used as the boot song?

If AI were to give Taylor the respect he deserves because he won, then I would say fine. But if they’re going to continue treating him like carp, then he SHOULD distance himself from the show and try to make a name as a performer by himself. Which, incidentally, is what he’s doing.

  • Desdemona

  • film_girl

Here’s an important thing to keep in mind about ratings — you can’t do year-to-year comparisons based just on the numbers, because there are other factors involved. The percentage of total households who had the TV turned on who were watching Idol last night was almost identical to what it was last year — like a percentage point’s difference — but looking at those numbers, more people were watching television this week last year than they are this year. Daylight Saving tends to have a negative affect on ratings, especially in non-Sweeps months – and with DST starting three weeks early, the total households with TVs on took an early dip too. The ratings are virtually identical to what they were last year – and the fact is, network programming in general is in decline – it will continue to decline. If you look at an average night of programming, for other shows that have been in the same timeslot year to date, you can see a show that has the same nightly position in both years – but has less viewers in 2007 — it’s just a reality that every year, cable cannibalizes more and more of network TVs audience share. That Idol averaged a 28 share for the night, in March, the first week of Daylight Saving, with the ever growing state of cable television – is nothing short of awesome.

I’m not saying Idol isn’t reaching its peak (I kind of expected a decline this year – but it didn’t happen – I think we might see some viewer drop off next year, but you never know), but to me – articles like the one in MSNBC and a few other publications are just part of the inevitable “Idol Backlash.” New York Magazine has this trend map of the lifecycle of stuff in popular culture — you know, the buzz (as the graph raises), the saturation point (the peak of the graph), the backlash, and then the backlash to the backlash. Every television show that captures a HUGE amount of media and cultural attention gets the backlash (and Idol didn’t become the juggernaut that it is until last year – when it was finally embraced by every facet of the mainstream media, and in-turn, more viewers) — this is Idol’s — it doesn’t necessarily mean anything. With Friends, it happened half-way through season 3 (they got big in Season 2) — with Grey’s Anatomy, it started this season – though the IW mess has curtailed the media call that Grey’s is starting to suck — Lost is in major media backlash mode right now. It’s cyclical.

  • hs

Taylor does not have a video. Taylor had to wait two months to get a single. Taylorà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s songs are not being used in American Idol commercials. Taylorà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s video is not being shown across movie theater screens. Is this The Firmà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s fault? AIà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s? Sonyà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s? I have no clue. But ità ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s someoneà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s.

  • KEG

Hey Nanny McPhee, I agree with you on the Haley/Kat comparisons. You’re definitely not the only one out there!

My husband thinks Haley is much prettier than Kat.

Well if this, as well as Haley having a better voice is a popular opinion then I think Haley will be just fine and have lots of opportunities after the show and I’ll expect her to make it quite far this season. However since it’s so early in the competition I think this is akin to those that would compare Sundance as being a cut above Taylor in the voice and looks department. I’m not suggesting anyones opinion is not valid I just don’t think these are real popular opinions at this point and Haley has a long way to go to reach McPhee status with the general populace just as Sundance had to show a lot more than his initial audition to warrant the comparisons to Taylor. To each their own but the Haley/Kat comparisons are a little strange given how frustrating many out there found the Taylor/Sundance comparisons to be.

AI appears to be distancing themselves from Taylor. Coming out of lurk to say if they showed some of his clips from last year (wooo!) clips from his CD and tour, their ratings might go up (voting is down about 6 million), and they might just recoop some of the money they lost on the contract. I’m out now.

  • film_girl

RightSaidFred – Yup — my only issue with the MSNBC article (and I like Andy) is that he either doesn’t truly understand how to interpret Nielsen ratings (I do it at work every day) or he didn’t actually look closely enough at the numbers. He saw a dip in a side-by-side comparison and it fit in with his thesis that Idol is in ratings decline. The fact that Variety and THR haven’t even remotely published anything of that nature is enough of a sign to me (even if I didn’t understand how to read the Nielsen book) that this theory is thin at best.

What I find so funny is, everyone keeps saying that Taylor is the Anti-Idol but we keep pulling back into the fold. It’s not about Taylor, It’s about AI. Beigning a winner of that show means nothing to them. During Fantasia’s reign, AI never pimped her because as far as they were concerned it was all about Kelly Clarkson. Fantasia, at the time, was selling more than Taylor but they ignored her. They brought her back do to her thing as a winner but dismissed her during the finals. Here was a girl selling cds and why wasn’t AI pimping her, you ask, because AI did not feel the need to praise her at the time but choose to ride the Kelly Clarkson Train.

When will you guys realize that these contestants are nothing but products used to make AI shine at their convenience. Why all of a sudden is a big deal made over Fantasia when her cd has done all but tanked. Why, because it’s something for AI to brag that they have a winner in a leading role on Broadway. It’s always and will always be about AI.

Mark my word, Taylor is in a better place. AI has given him the platform and his fans asre supporting him. What more does he need. What more do we want?

    Kelly Clarkson
    Clay Aiken
    Taylor Hicks

There was a much larger gap between the ratings for Season 5 and Season 6 during the auditions. The gap has narrowed since then. Whether that means that it’s the end of Idol as we know it remains to be seen. But, I think it’s a trend that’s worth keeping an eye on–to see if it goes anywhere.

  • AFan

The goal for every single constestant on AI is to get into the final two so they can get a record deal.
The goal of TPTB is to make good television.
The goal of the record company that ends up singing the top two is to try and put out a CD that will sell well. Thats all.
They have no obligations to “pimp” anyone and when they do it’s only to make themselves look better. Why in gods name would they take time out of the show to say anything about Taylor’s marginal success that isn’t anything to brag about.
It’s basically up to the contestant after the show is over to sell themselves. If the show gives them a 3 second mention on their show thats not really going to effect them. I think EVERYONE knew that Chris Daughtry was something crazy special and that his type of music was going to do very well in the mainstream market. I think people also knew that Taylor was going to have a tough time trying to sell his throw back style. That may have been a big reason why many of his fans rallied behind him and got him in the top spot.
It is essentially about what the majority of americans like. If people have beef with Taylor not doing well then take it up with your next door neighbor. Not the stupid television show that gave him everything he could have asked for, and more. It’s not their job to make people like him. That’s Taylors.

Chris’ “Home” is now going to be officially released to radio on April 10th (although more and more radio stations are playing it already).

Why so late I have no idea. Perhaps to not to interfere with INO since it is doing so well and is continuing to sell albums (#1 on mediabase Top 40 chart as well as #1 for mediabase HOT AC, #6 for mediabase rock, and #8 for mediabase active rock).

  • NOLA

LBB, as popular as Carrie is, I don’t see her filling a stadium as a solo act…not just yet. She has gotten much better; but she has a long way to go to become a “performer.” A solo act has to be able to entertain and not just sing.

  • Metta

I think EVERYONE knew that Chris Daughtry was something crazy special

If by “crazy special” you mean one-note, humorless, and generic, then yeah, I’m down with that!

  • http://www.idolicious.com Kat

Why in gods name would they take time out of the show to say anything about Taylorà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s marginal success that isnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t anything to brag about.

Bullshit. Oh, wait, I’m sorry, DAUGHTRY! is the gold standard for success now. If you don’t sell 2 million in three months, you have absolutely nothing to brag about. I don’t know, Taylor’s selling out a tour and winning rave reviews. Sounds like something to brag about to me.

Ità ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s basically up to the contestant after the show is over to sell themselves.

Fine, then drop Daughtry from the roster and see if his sales stagnate. It’s a chicken and egg argument, AFan. If all successful artists caught on simply because they were great talents, marketers would be out of a job. With very few exceptions, it takes marketing to make someone a commercial success. I don’t ever expect Taylor to be as commercially successful as Daughtry, because Taylor’s particular style is simply not “in” right now. But TPTB put him in the Top 24 knowing he’d be a tough sell. That’s their mistake, if they want to view it from that perspective, and they should live with it. Taylor absolutely deserves to be promoted by AI, because the viewing public said so. Maybe that reality didn’t come true in the record-buying world, but as you yourself said, the show and the industry are two separate entities. So following your logic, as far as the show is concerned, Taylor should totally get his due, right?

All that being said, do I think Taylor is shedding tears over this…no, I don’t. I personally think he’s way too happy where he is. But that doesn’t make TPTB’s treatment of him right…even if it makes some people happy.

  • neonorange

    film_girl:
Good point on the DST. I did notice that there was a 1.4 ratings drop last year during Daylight savings time. But the difference between last year and this year is 2.1. So even with the DST factored in, AI has still seen a slight drop over last year. Obviously, none of this is scientific but it is interesting to watch.

  • Kirsten

AFan: I think EVERYONE knew that Chris Daughtry was something crazy special

Well, possibly EVERYONE except the vast majority of people who vote in AI (at least 75%+3 of the votes must have gone to other contestants for him to get the boot when he did).

And last time I checked, there were around 300 million people living in the US. So, probably only some of the 0.67% of the US population who purchased the CD think he’s “something crazy special”.

    Chrisà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Homeà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ is now going to be officially released to radio on April 10th

Sounds to me like the “Chris Insider” who aunnounced just yesterday that “Home” would be released next week to radio is fallible.

I will be taking their information with a “grain of salt” from here on.

Why so late I have no idea. Perhaps to not to interfere with INO since it is doing so well and is continuing to sell albums

I have an idea. Maybe because despite being show-cased every week on the most popular television show in the US, “Home” has failed to catch fire on its own compared to last year’s boot song. A song sung by an out of tune, delusional chick on the show saw a bigger increase last week (and Carrie’s saw a 101% increase). So, why bother releasing it now? Hope that it gets more support from being on the show before releasing it.

I don’t buy the INO theory because JT has multiple songs on the chart at once.

  • Little Boy Blue

    Hypothetical question …

If the following were true …

    1) TPTB made JTFTW the boot song

    2) Pimped Taylor the same way they pimped Daughtry

    3) Used his song as the accompaniment to the Cowell commercial…

Therefore, his album would have sold past platinum….

    I highly doubt it….

As a follow-up… anybody knows what Taylor’s Soundscan numbers were for last week ?

I truly don’t get the argument that sales = talent. With that logic, Hannah Montana is one of the great artists of 2006. I’m not saying that Chris’ is not talented – just sayin’ that phenomenal cd sales do not equate to talent. Logically speaking all talented artists do not sell phenomenally well and all phenomenally selling artists are not talented. BTW, Armageddon is coming soon — Just got a promo from Disney that Hannah Montana is releasing a special 2 disc soundtrack. Mark your calendars – March 20.

That’s actually not the issue for me. My issue is that as winner, Taylor should by default get those opportunities before they get passed to the runners-up. Both Chris’s and Katharine’s own songs have been used in connection with the show on at least one occasion. A few bars of “Do I Make You Proud” (the show’s song) were played over the end of an audition in which a talentless young woman tried to imitate Taylor. The argument above is just the same logic that the show is promoting–Taylor won’t sell, so his win means nothing. I want to see Taylor have a career beyond Idol, but I would also like to see him respected by the show because he DID win.

  • SEXYGIRL

hs – what and when singles are released is up to the record label, not Taylor, so no, the fault her does not lie in Taylorà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s lap. It falls on the label.

actually that’s not true. i was under the impress that it’s the artist who has to pay for videos..

But letà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s say he appears TOGETHER with Taylor ? How will the fans of both take it ?

This fan truly don’t give a damn..I voted for Taylor so he can have a career. Not be pimped by AI at their convenience. I buy his cd and go to this concerts. I’m happy for his success because he is a lot further today than he was a year ago. He is a musician trying to catch a break. Not a singer just looking for instant success. If that was the case, then I would be upset that he was not getting enough attention from the show.

I don’t get it. We seem to want it both ways. We want Taylor to distance himself from AI but want AI to parade him across their stage as a lesson for them not wanting him to win..

Hey, those rappers who sing (actually they don’t sing, they talk fast) about raping and killing their Ho’s and the guy who actually outsold Taylor by 50,000 units last December — YOUNG JEEZY, these are the talents we have today.

And oh yeah, William Hung actually outsold Broadway star, Diana Degarmo, Latoya London and (I think ) Mario Vasquez ( Kirsten, please check this )….and according to his confession to Larry King, is a millionaire now. I guess he’s more talented too.

Here’s the thing about Ludacris, which is why O’Reilly in particular looks a little out of touch by picking him to criticize. Ludarcris’ whole persona is kind of comical, sorta. He’s the musical equivalent of the little the guy in the crew who talks mad shyt and makes everyone laugh. He’s all about partying, jokes and talking smack. Not particularly threatening. Of all the rappers who say stuff and propose to mean it (cough, 50 CENT, cough) you pick the guy who makes videos where he has big popeye arms and his “roughneck” crew consists of large girls wearing plaid stewardess uniforms? That’s like deciding you want to rail against irresposible disaster planning and picking Gilligian’s Island as your example. Uhh, yeah. Maybe. But I seem to recall that it was second on a fan online poll asking what should be the next daughtry single. Haven’t checked the site in a while so the numbers could have changed. Anyway, while I think the tune is actually quite nice I can’t get past the juvenile lyrics of “the pain you feel’s a different kind of pain.” and the chorus “Be careful what you wish for,’Cause you just might get it all. You just might get it all, And then some you don’t want.” I like lyrics that don’t tell me how to feel but rather tell a story that evokes a feeling. But to each his/her own.

I leave you with Rolling Stones “Can’t Always Get What you Want” which I think would make a helluva boot song:
I went down to the Chelsea drugstore
    To get your prescription filled
I was standing in line with Mr. Jimmy
And man, did he look pretty ill
We decided that we would have a soda
    My favorite flavor, cherry red
I sung my song to Mr. Jimmy
Yeah, and he said one word to me, and that was “dead”
    I said to him

You can’t always get what you want, no!
You can’t always get what you want (tell ya baby)
You can’t always get what you want (no)
But if you try sometimes you just might find
    You get what you need
    Oh yes! Woo!

I think the interesting debate is not whether Chris’ “Home” will be number 1 or not for it will be, it is rather how will it affect sales of the album. “Bad Day” was the most downloaded song of 2006 selling >2 million single downloads. However, the album itself sold about 500K.

Will Chris’ “Home” have more of an impact on DAUGHTRY CD sales than “Bad Day” did on Daniel Powter’s album sales?

    We shall see…

    THE DATE : Mar 14th, 2007 at 4:44 pm

The big prediction — HOME by Daughtry will be the BIGGEST SONG IN THE PLANET.

The only question that needs be answered is this — how do we quantify BIGGEST SONG IN THE PLANET ?

If this question has been answered, we can then determine whether or not the prediction succeeds.

I am defining “Biggest Song on The Planet” as number 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 as well as # 1 Hot AC and # 1 Pop Charts. Thus # 1 on multi-formats.

Let’s see if I am correct.

  • pj

Nigel’s tvweek review of last night is up now.

    http://www.tvweek.com/docs/docs/Idol_BLT_3_14.mp3

  • http://www.idolicious.com Kat

And even if “Home” is the biggest song on the planet, what does that mean? It would be one thing if “Home” were competing on the level with every single other song out there and somehow emerged victorious. But none of us here are that stupid.

I donà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t get it. We seem to want it both ways. We want Taylor to distance himself from AI but want AI to parade him across their stage as a lesson for them not wanting him to win..

I want Taylor to have a long and prosperous career, but I want AI to respect him as a winner. And yes, I admit, I want AI to respect ME as a viewer and a voter, instead of insulting my intelligence by trying to brainwash me into thinking that someone else won.

  • Little Boy Blue

Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢m not disagreeing with the idea that there is a lot of rap with degrading lyrics.

Good. THOSE ARE THE SONGS I AM REFERING TO.

And yes, they do get airplay and they DO sell.

Which goes back to the original (sarcastic) argument I seconded… if record sales are the main determinant of what makes great songs or artists, then those who sing such songs that DO GET AIRPLAY and SELL are great artists.

What I object to is someone putting arguments on my keyboard which I never presented… I NEVER damned/stereotyped the entire rap genre as filled with thug music.

  • bean99

This blog was going along nicely earlier, talking about this season but now seems to have reverted back again. Really, AI doesn’t have to mention any of them every week and I’m sure can pick who comes on the show. I’m guessing that Taylor & Chris will be on at some point but won’t be losing any sleep either way. I have maybe a passing interest in seeing how Elliott’s album does and checking on Chris’ once in a while but other than that I don’t care.

  • vegasdee

Hey, those rappers who sing (actually they donà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t sing, they talk fast) about raping and killing their Hoà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s and the guy who actually outsold Taylor by 50,000 units last December à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’ YOUNG JEEZY, these are the talents we have today.

You gave a specific example of Ludacris, which by the way I agree with tinawina, and I merely pointed out that he had another song, which he performed at the grammy’s with Mary J. Blige, that brought about a social awareness, teenage pregnancy, teenage drug use, etc. I don’t know enough about Young Jeezy or his music to comment, so I won’t go there.
    E
TA: I’m fully aware that there are rap songs out there that are offensive and degrading to woman. I thought you were judging a whole genre of music based on a few artists’, my bad, I saw that you clarified above.

  • http://www.idolicious.com Kat

I have maybe a passing interest in seeing how Elliottà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s album does and checking on Chrisà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ once in a while but other than that I donà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t care.

Heh. For me it’s this season I don’t care about. Maybe if AI gave me something to entertain me, I’d care less about Daughtry vs. Hicks.

In the end I have no doubt that Taylor is happy, healthy, and can more than handle himself. I don’t think he needs AI. Perhaps, in the long run, he’s better off for it. But it doesn’t mean I can’t smart over the lack of respect that AI has shown him, or me, for that matter.

    Some interesting numbers:

The number one song, on the TOP 40 charts, had 9325 spins this week.

The number one song, on the Country charts, had 7896 spins this week.

The number one song, on the Mainstream Urban charts, had 3904 spins this week.

The number one song, on the Adult Contemporary charts,
    had 2796 spins this week.

Uhh, yeah. Way to lose what could be a credible point in a sea of you-have-no-idea-what-you-are-talking-about.

    I only lose if I concede defeatà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ¦ I STAND BY WHAT I SAY.

Am I allowed to post the lyrics to their songs here ?

    NO, you are not.

  • jersey

And funny shit it is Gray.

  • NOLA

    Creed without the Jesus! hahahahahahaha
That explains daughtry to a T.

  • thedingoateyobaby

    Creed without the Jesus!!! Bwahahahahaha!

    Colbert is hillarious. Fucking hillarious.
Oh Christ did I ever need that laugh. Thanks for that one.

I love the song Home but its cause I associate it with Idol’s boot song and Im such an Idol geek that every time I see the stage that the top 12 sing on, I see those fucking steps that taylor used to “play” with last year and when whats his face pranced out on that little space behind the judges last night like Taylor did every Tuesday night I wanted ta kick him in the nuts.

My point is that Im not so sure Home will be the hit you think Squishy but I aint betting against it either.

I should have never gone off my medications.

  • Little Boy Blue

    MJ

    NO, you are not.

    My point is made.

Thats it in a nutshell. All I want is a growl, thats all. Im easily pleased. Just one fucking decent growl. One that makes the hair on the back of my neck stand up and say….whoooooo hoooooooo!!!!

  • vegasdee

LBB, I gotta run to pick up my daughter, maybe we can agree to disagree on this one.

  • jersey

LBB – I don’t think MJ cares what the lyrics say, I think she doesn’t want ANY lyrics posted because of copyright issues. (but I could be wrong)

  • thedingoateyobaby

Maybe its more of a copyright point than anything else.

  • kylovestaylor

Dingo, I don’t think you are gonna hear a growl.

    :lol_wp:

    I wish someone would………….though.

  • http://myspace.com/girlgeek mj

No, I did not make your point for you, LBBÂ

I didn’t want you to post the lyrics NOT BECAUSE OF THE CONTENT, BUT BECAUSE THIS ARGUMENT IS RIDICULOUS AND OFF TOPIC, and I WANT IT TO STOP.

    Thank you.

  • AFan

I think this is just all a big blame game. Taylor’s not blowing up the charts… lets blame American Idol for not mentioning his… whatever he’s doing.
Or how about we blame the music industry.
Or how about we blame the other artists like Daughtry who make pop music that’s popular for bringing down the music world.
Why don’t we blame the teenagers for listening to what they do.
And then after that we can blame the parents for not introducing music to their children.
The we can blame the schools for not having good music programs.

What it boils down to is that not every likes the same things. And if you’re angry with what’s popular and playing on the radio then simply do not listen to it. There are billions of other options out there.
I love that music is something not everybody has to agree on. I love Christina Aguilera’s voice while some of my friends think she’s a shrieking mess.
So AI is not mentioning Taylor this year. So what? Unfortunately, they found a bigger success story. Did everyone one forget Clay/Ruben? Shit happens. There’s no need to get worked up about it.
Plus, even if they did mention him, he wouldn’t do better. He needs a hit single and a video. His team is supposed to be responsible for that. Not American Idol. They have bigger fish to fry and a show to do.

  • Little Boy Blue

The number one song, on the Adult Contemporary charts,
    had 2796 spins this week.

JTFTW at #25 AC has 213 spins this week. Less than 10 times the spins that John Mayer has.

One station alone spinned Mayer’s song 45 times in one day.

That’s more than once per hour…

I wonder who decides how many times to spin a song…given that we know that PD’s get to decide and NOT listener requests, I wonder what FACTORS make them decide that a song is worth spinning more than once per hour.

  • jpfan

Thanks for the Stephen Colbert link. Good to hear him weighing in on the Daughtry vs. Hicks battle. Shouldn’t somebody tell him we’re in Season 6 though. Get with the program and start talking about Melinda/Kiki dude. Barnes and Noble has samples of all the tunes on Elliott’s CD up. I never dreamed he’d make an album this commercial.

  • Lara

I don’t know if this has been posted already. I looked a couple pages back and didn’t see it. B&N has 30 sec. snippets of all the songs on Elliott’s album. It seems to be a very eclectic mix.
    http://music.barnesandnoble.com/search/product.asp?z=y&EAN=805859001921&itm=1

Dingo, I thought of you when listening to “Take My Breath Away”. I think you’ll like that one. There was at least 1 growl in the 30 sec. clip.

Last night was the first night I noticed the full manipulations of the show kicking into high gear this season. Their goal seemed to be to pimp Jordin and de-pimp Stephanie, by making the audience think Jordin was on par with Melinda and Lakisha. The judges even flat-out said it. She was in the pimp spot, and praised profusely, even though if you listen to the vocal, it had a very nervous vibrato and was a poor song choice, IMO. She is good, but not as good as she was made-out to be last night.

I think they also wanted Stephanie to leave soon. Many saw her as the 3rd competitor to Melinda and Lakisha on the girls’ side. I really believe that she was de-pimped last night to make room for Jordin’s rise to prominence to become the eventual winner. I think they love Lakisha and Melinda’s voices, but don’t think they will sell enough units for a winner. Jordin’s looks, personality and voice can easily be fit to teen pop. I really think they want Jordin to win, and started paving the road for her last night.

  • thedingoateyobaby

Dingo, I thought of you when listening to à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Take My Breath Awayà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ . I think youà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ll like that one. There was at least 1 growl in the 30 sec. clip.

Lara, ahm on my way to listen at B&N. If I dont get a very large charge then ahm gonna blame it in you!

  • http://www.idolicious.com Kat

And if youà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢re angry with whatà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s popular and playing on the radio then simply do not listen to it.

I would actually appreciate not being told what my motivation is, AFan, especially since I believe I’ve stated it at least five separate times on this blog today. There’s a difference between blaming AI for sales and feeling that they should treat their winner better regardless of how he or she performs.

  • squishy

I just listened to Nigel’s conversation. He basically said that there are always surprises when it comes to the LaBoot. I heard that the LaBootee is going to be Brandon.

I hope not but he has been a disappointment week after week. I hope the rumor is wrong.

  • jersey

After last night, I wouldn’t consider Brandon getting the boot a surprise.

  • pj

I have the feeling Brandon is going tonight. I think there were way worse performances than his, but forgetting the lyrics and starting the show might have done it for him.

Where did you hear that, though, Squish?

ETA: Jersey is right, though. It wouldn’t be a surprise.

  • Sagie

I think DAUGHTRY called her and let her in on the info.

  • thedingoateyobaby

Ohhhhhhhhhh, E’s music is like the harp of angels playing. No one does “A Song For You” like Karen Carpenter but E does a fantastic job.

I didnt hear a growl though. I been TRICKED! It was worth it.

  • http://www.idolicious.com Kat

I agree with jersey–a Brandon boot would not be shocking tonight. The judges were too hard on Sanjaya and I’m sure he racked up a carpload of pity votes, in addition to VFTW votes. But, this is Nigel we’re talking about, where every boot is The! Most! Shocking! Boot! Ever!

  • NOLA

    lol Sagie

  • thedingoateyobaby

Did everyone one forget Clay/Ruben? Shit happens. Thereà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s no need to get worked up about it.

Hell no. Ahm still seein’ a shrink over that one.

  • NOLA

Not too hard to pick Brandon as the bootee tonight, as
he was in the final spot on DialIdol all night long.

  • Lara

Ohhhhhhhhhh, Eà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s music is like the harp of angels playing. No one does à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“A Song For Youà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ like Karen Carpenter but E does a fantastic job.

I didnt hear a growl though. I been TRICKED! It was worth it.
    ———————————–
It was on “girl” and to a lesser extent the “I”. Maybe a 9-volt charge on the clip. The song gives the feeling that there will be more growls on the full version, though. I hope so.

  • squishy

    Dingo,

If even YOU downloaded the song, Chris “Home” is going to be a hit :wink_wp:.

We shall see if my prediction of #1 Hot 100, #1 Pop, #1 Hot AC is correct.

    Again we shall see…

  • AFan

I wonder who decides how many times to spin a songà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ¦given that we know that PDà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s get to decide and NOT listener requests, I wonder what FACTORS make them decide that a song is worth spinning more than once per hour.

Duh! It’s TPTB from American Idol. They call up the station and make sure they don’t play any of Taylor’s songs.

I would actually appreciate not being told what my motivation is, AFan, especially since I believe Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ve stated it at least five separate times on this blog today. Thereà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s a difference between blaming AI for sales and feeling that they should treat their winner better regardless of how he or she performs.

I actually wasn’t talking about you. It was a blanket statement about people pointing the finger at everything else but Taylor himself when it comes to his success. I’m not telling you anything. I was just stating my own opinion.

  • jpfan

The only shocking boots tonite would be if Melinda, Lakeisha, Jordin or Sanjaya left. Everyone else wouldn’t be much of a surprise.

  • squishy

    Sagie,

Yep DAUGHTRY called me with the results.

  • http://www.idolicious.com Kat

We shall see if my prediction of #1 Hot 100, #1 Pop, #1 Hot AC is correct.

    Again we shall seeà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ¦

At this point in time, predicting that Chris Daughtry will have a hit is a little bit like predicting that the sun will rise tomorrow. In other words, kind of a given, and it won’t impress anyone. ;-)

AFan–just out of curiosity, what do you think Taylor could do to improve his sales? Is he actually doing something wrong, or do you think it just boils down to someone’s personal preference for the album?

  • thedingoateyobaby

Squishy, ahm a bonafide traitor I guess cause I fucking love “Home”. Its a great song and it runs through my head all day long with “Sexyback” lololol!

Say what you will but Sexyback is da bombbbbbbbbb!

  • NOLA

Squishy, do you ever feel like you’re cheating on daughtry
when you are making love to your husband?

  • Desdemona

Not too hard to pick Brandon as the bootee tonight, as
he was in the final spot on DialIdol all night long.

But he ended up 5th from top; Stephanie has been on the very bottom every time I checked. So I guess one could say it “would” be a shocker to see Brandon go when there are 7 below him on the DI chart.

The “shocker” would be if ChrisS goes, even though he’s the second to lowest on the chart, which is where he was every time I checked.

  • AFan

wow, i’m lovin Elliott’s CD. I think there are a lot of songs that are better than his single though, but oh well. I can’t wait to buy it. I’m especially feeling that song “Find a Way”

  • SpenserJ

We shall see if my prediction of #1 Hot 100, #1 Pop, #1 Hot AC is correct.

Well okay, but your prediction was that it would be the BIGGEST song on the PLANET. Not that it would be number one on three charts.

  • NOLA

Des, you must use the busy percentage screen in order to
read DialIdol correctly (according to the guy who wrote
the program.) Brandon was and still is sitting at the
    bottom.

  • AFan

Kat – I don’t know much about marketing so I’m not really sure. I think he shouldn’t have released JTFTW. I think that song is boring. I actually liked The Runaround and I like taht song Heaven Knows as well. Those songs could catch on.
But I think the main thing is personal taste when it comes to the album. I like a few songs but don’t even think the ones I like are that great. Others LOVE every song.
As far as Taylor doing anything wrong. As far as something he can control, no, I don’t think so. He can’t control his annoying personality.

  • jpfan

LBB – Ludacris is a very smart, talented guy who makes parody/rap songs. He’s in on the joke. He’s a good actor (was in Crash) and is much more together than you may think. He’s playing the part of “Ludacris” and knows the meaning of his name.
