    Beyond à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‹Idolà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ limits, Hicksà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ shtick clicks with well-picked covers

Taylor Hicks is finally in his own element. Ità ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s all about context.

The further the à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“American Idolà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ season five upset winner distances himself from the show that crowned him, the better off heà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ll be. Somewhere underneath that salt-and-pepper dome of his, Hicks knows ità ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s true.

Ità ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s never been clearer than during his sold-out Boston debut at Avalon last night: Taylor Hicks had no business being on à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Idolà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ to begin with. Ità ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s just not his aesthetic. And thatà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s not necessarily a bad thing.

The proof lies in the difference between last nightà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s fantastic à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Showtime at the Apolloà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ -style shakedown and the way he came across last summer during the Idols Live tour. Against the à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Idolà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ backdrop, he looked a little silly and his stage shenanigans reeked of Vegas contrivance…

    Tony Winners
On ”American Idol,” guest coach Tony Bennett and an assortment of classic American songs inspire some surprising performances that might shake up the standings

…If I’m right that Chris and Blake are appealing to some of the same voters, LaKisha and Melinda are likely in a two-way battle of their own as well. And while the judges were more effusive tonight in their praise of Mindy Doo’s ”I Got Rhythm,” I actually preferred Kiki’s ”Stormy Weather.” Mind you, I’m not saying Melinda hit a single bad note during her performance (or at any point this season), but as the judges lauded Melinda for teaching another vocal master class, it hit me: I don’t want to feel like I’m at school, with Miss Doolittle giving a PowerPoint presentation on various details of pitch, phrasing, and rhythm. I want an Idol whose performances are throbbing with joy and pain and life experience, who’s not afraid to get ugly, who makes me believe that she’s got rhythm, music, and her man à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’ and that she could not ask for anything more. The crazy thing is, Melinda proved capable of exactly that with her semifinal takes on ”My Funny Valentine” and ”I’m a Woman,” but her shtick has become too push-button, too bloodless these last few weeks…

Send In the Clowns. Don’t Bother, Sanjaya’s Here.

…Oh yeah, eight other Idolettes performed classics from when Tony Bennett was the king of swing.

Bennett told Blake Lewis to slow down his performance of “Mack the Knife” and pay attention to the song’s story, about a “pretty sharp gangster.” Lewis ignored him and rushed through the song while stroking himself and spinning in circles, which the judges have come to call his “style.” Randy complimented him on his “whole cool jazz vibe”; Paula called him “a hip cat” and Simon even gave him “7 out of 10.” Blake confided to Ryan he didn’t get the lyrics. No kidding…

    Sanjaya again hijacks à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“American Idolà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’ this time with charm and confidence

    There were some decent performances tonight on à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“American Idol,à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ but there was only one that was à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’ in Simon Cowellà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s words à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’ à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“incredible.à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬

    Exec: Sanjaya won’t win ‘Idol’

The impact of the Internet and radio hype about keeping Sanjaya Malakar alive on “American Idol” is overblown, according to the show’s executive producer, Ken Warwick, who doesn’t expect Malakar to be around when the show ends next month.

“There is very little hype anybody can do to affect the vast numbers of votes we get,” Warwick said yesterday.

Since the show launched, Malakar has been a flash point for media coverage – and what may or may not be keeping him on the show…..

‘Idol’ on top despite ratings dip

Viewership was down for both of last week’s “American Idol” broadcasts on Fox compared with a year ago, but they were still the two most-watched programs of the week, according to figures released Tuesday by Nielsen Media Research.

Last Tuesday’s competition show drew 28.18 million viewers, 11% fewer than a year ago. The Wednesday results broadcast attracted 26.89 million viewers, down 3% from 2006.

American Idol: The Sanjaya Show Continues

Tonight on American Idol, octogenarian crooner Tony Bennett coached the remaining nine contestants. While we were semi-excited to hear the Idols take on the standards, LAist was really anticipating what form Sanjayaà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s shape-shifting hair would take on this week? Maybe a salt and pepper gray in honor of Mr. Bennet? No such luck. This week, Sanjaya wore a à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢do that was much tamer than the faux-hawk: just the simple slicked-back crooner look. What did you think of Chris’ performance?

Chris Richardson, the Chesapeake native who’s advancing on “American Idol,” smoked a version of Duke Ellington’s “Don’t Get Around Much Anymore” Tuesday night.

Emerging from a shadowed background, he recalled Michael Jackson, not least for his ease of movement. His head topped by a fedora and suspenders slung off his waist, Richardson updated the classic song with a spunky twist, making the judges agree he’d topped himself.

His performance all but guaranteed he’s in for another week – but, as the cult of contestant Sanjaya Malakar proves, nothing’s certain. While we wait for the results, we asked Howard Bender a one-time tenor with the Metropolitan Opera who directs the TodiMusicFest in Portsmouth, his thoughts…

Idol chop: Which weighs the most on ‘Idol,’ voice or looks?

The judges keep saying it’s a singing competition. But pretty boy Sanjaya Malakar’s ability to survive the cut week in and week out suggests “American Idol” is about more than vocal chops.

The 17-year-old Malakar is better known for his cuddly good looks and luscious locks than his vocal ability.

Yet he has outlasted superior singers such as Sabrina Sloan, Stephanie Edwards and last week’s castoff, Chris Sligh, to make it into the Top 9, and could outlast even better singers like Gina Glocksen or Flint native LaKisha Jones…

    Slick-Jaya

Oh who cares about the singing? What was his hair like this week? In sum, Sanjaya Malakar took the wet look to complete saturation. His hair was so overloaded with product, I’m surprised he could lift his head.

But no matter: The boy from Seattle managed to elicit sincere compliments from guest coach Tony Bennett for having the courage to be different on Tuesday’s “American Idol.” Decked out in a white suit and matching shoes, Sanjaya offered Irving Berlin’s “Cheek to Cheek,” and shuffled all over the stage like, well, not Fred Astaire, exactly, but not Fred Flintstone either. Your nightmares, however, might bear a striking resemblance to what took place for one entire mind-numbing hour on FOX last night. Long story short, the top 9 contestants took a few ham-fisted swipes at classic crooning numbers like “Mack the Knife”, “Ain’t Misbehavin’”, and “Night and Day”, while a somewhat confused looking Tony Bennett did his best dinosaur impression.

Classic edition of American Idol not so memorable – panel

How to sum up Tuesday’s “American Classics” edition of “American Idol”?

    Not so classic.

Tony Bennett, still going strong at 80, was the coach, and choked up when discussing the victims of 9/11 and the troops in Iraq.

That was more emotion than most of the singers showed Tuesday.

AI: Tony Bennett’s Not Playing With You

One of the best things about this season of “American Idol” is how much the celebrity spokesguests are taking their jobs as mentors and teachers seriously. And they’re not worried about seeming nice or sweet – they’re here to make these children sound better, and since they’re gonna still be rich whether or not Sanjaya acts afool, they might as well whip some singerlings into shape.

    Phil just didn’t deliver

Yikes. Phil. Phil. Phil. Not a stellar night for our hometown dude (OK, former hometown dude.) After last week’s kickin’ rendition of The Police’s “Every Breath You Take,” Phil Stacey dressed the part but didn’t deliver on Cole Porter’s immortal “Night and Day.” Can we just agree now that Paula was way way generous in describing him as a “young Frank Sinatra?” Would that be a still-in-the-womb Frank Sinatra? Randy and Simon called it correctly when they said Phil showed no joy, no warmth. I think, and I hope, that he’s safe for another week, because there were worse performances, but chalk this up as a tough week for Mr. Phil.

Here is my take on the best-to-worst performances of the night, ending with my pick for who should go home this week. (And I fear that Phil will be among the bottom three.):

    American Idol: American Standards

This week they wheeled out Tony Bennett to mentor the kids about songs most of them will never record — standards. It’s funny that this is a theme night, since most of the contestants that consider this genre to be a specialty get viciously kicked to the curb early in the competition.
However, without this night, Seacrest couldn’t use the phrase “80-years-young.” Most of these songs are usually a cakewalk for contestants. Some fared better than others…

Voting Rights Drive à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‹Idol,à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ Not the Abuse or the Hair

There are viewers who complain that there is something un-American about à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“American Idolà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ this season, and they may have a point.

The Fox singing competition that is under siege by supporters of Sanjaya Malakar, and à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Idolà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ saboteurs like Howard Stern, has upset traditional fans who feel that the inventively coiffed but reedy-voiced Mr. Malakar is not talented enough to stay in the contest. But that is the risk à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Idolà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ runs by giving viewers the final say.

à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Idol,à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ now in its sixth season, has its selection process backward. In this country, people can vote for whomever they want à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’ even Al Gore in 2000 à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’ but the last word is left to the Electoral College and even the justices of the Supreme Court.

The most interesting thing about this seasonà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s ado is not Mr. Malakar or Mr. Stern or even Simon Cowell; ità ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s the current obsession with voting on television shows and Internet sites like YouTube…

Has Sanjaya Malakar ruined the “American Idol” judges?
Sanjaya Malakar so baffles the “American Idol” judges that they don’t know what to say. Simon Cowell decided on a different approach Tuesday night. “Incredible,” Simon’s lips said. But his eyes said anything but incredible.

Randy Jackson has given up on criticizing Sanjaya’s singing, preferring to hail him as a great entertainer. This pussyfooting around is slopping over into the judges’ critiques of other singers. Simon praised Haley Scarnato’s legs after she vamped through “Ain’t Misbehavin.’” Yes, her legs.

Some thoughtful commentary would be nice. But I’ll settle for mean. Mean is better than cryptic … please let us know what you’re thinking. That’s why you’re there…

Sour grapes for Nigel Lythgoe

à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‹NASTYà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ Nigel Lythgoeà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s wine show Corkscrewed has been axed by Sky One because of falling ratings.

Just 53,000 viewers tuned into the second episode on Monday night and the remaining two shows will be shown on Sky Three.

Ità ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s a big blow for Nigel, 57, executive producer of American Idol and one of the men behind Popstars and Pop Idol.

The four-parter follows Nigel and his pal Ken Warwick, also an executive producer on American Idol, as they try to make a go of a Californian vineyard.

Sky Oneà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s average audience for its key 9pm slot is normally 295,000.

Sanjaya’s Hair on Ebay? Or American Idol Hoax?

Sanjaya is a nice lad. I always feel I have to say something nice before I start cutting. He’s a nice lad, but he can’t sing for beans and has some of the weirdest hairstyles I have ever seen (which I am convinced is a plot by American Idol producers to keep him in headlines.) Now you can own your own piece of American Idol’s most prized contestant, or so the auction claims. Hey, it totally looks like his hair! I think I actually recognize that curl pattern…

Top 9 croon to the songs of Tony Bennett

The master of longevity came to mentor the remain 9 Idols. At 80 years young, Tony Bennett gave his input and showed this young group of hopefuls how ità ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s done. They learned well, as each came out and entertained à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’ some better than others. It seems the weeks that the theme has been older songs, the show has been better and the sing top-notch and there was no deviation from that trend this week. American Idol: Is VoteForTheWorst single-handedly keeping Sanjaya alive?

Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ve been reticent to give VoteForTheWorst.com credit for keeping Sanjaya Malakar on American Idol, just because they seem like such an easy scapegoat. However, given Sanjayaà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s recent rise in popularity (and his absence from the bottom three last week) weà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢re running out of culprits who deserve blame for Sanjaya remaining on the show. We have to begin looking for what is sparking this Sanjaya phenomenon. VoteForTheWorst can no longer be ignored.

These days, VoteForTheWorst is averaging around 6 million visitors a day, which is a ludicrous amount. If only half of those daily visitors vote for Sanjaya every Tuesday, thatà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s still three million votes, a significant number…

    Ted Casablanca

I haven’t even watched American Idol this season, but I’m still hearing all about this Sanjaya Malakar character with the less than stellar voice and over-the-top coif who’s somehow managed to stay on said show.

So, when I ran into Randy Jackson at Details magazine’s Mavericks issue party last Thursday, I had to get the jolly judge’s two cents on the whole Sanjaya sitch.

“You love him, don’t you?” he exclaimed, as soon as I asked him to weigh in. “I think he’s a smart, cute kid.”

But smart and cute doesn’t win singing contestsà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’ or it’s not supposed to, right?
Simon Cowell has already said he’s quitting if Sanjy wins. I asked Randy if he felt the same.

“Oh, he’s not gonna win!” he scoffed, as if it was the most ridiculous thing uttered since Britney and K-Fed’s wedding vows.

I say, you never know…America sure seems to like him. (Either that or sabotaging the show and pissing off Simon, who knows?)

OK, so apparently I dont HAVE a fucking life so I can spend a minute or so here today while my guests sleep (thank God). And here I thought I was gonna tip toe through the fucking tulips cause fucking Spring was upon us. HA! The temperature is dropping and it will be in the low 30′s in a few hours. BUT, I wanted to say that last night I was sooooooo wrong about my boy Sanj. Whilst I was listening to my man Taylor on the cellcert, I was also watching Sanjaya and I said that he was awful and that even I couldnt save him this week.

I rewatched the video several times now over at Ricky’s and he was magnificent in that cheesy kind of way. He was spectacular, in that cheesy kind of way that only Sanj can pull off and if Warwick doesnt think this boy will win his beloved TV show? Pfffttttttt, he is so out of the loop it aint funny. Hitting and missing beats on ‘American Idol’

The pop music critics’ take on “American Idol”:

Does it mean a thing if an Idol can’t swing? Not likely. Tonight’s Great American Songbook edition of “AI” proved that the guys couldn’t swing if they were in a tire dangling from a tree, although I confess to being charmed by Sanjaya Malakar’s cheeky and dapper everyguy take on “Cheek to Cheek.”…

Jersey, as far as lakisha being in the bottom IF dialidol is even remotely right? Im not shocked and I think many of us predicted she would go early. Oh gawd to see the look on their faces if she is in the bottom 3 let alone if she gets the boot as Sanjaya sits his skinny charming ass back down for another week. LMAO.

LOL dingo. I actually said last night I thought she might be in the bottom three. She sounded fine but it was more of the same. People get bored easily. I don’t think she has the same number of committed fans as Melinda does.

  • Little Debbi

Good morning. Dingo, off topic but important. I posted last night, but don’t know if you saw it. There is a new recall of “Dingo” pet treats. They make them for cats, dogs and ferrets and they are contaminated with salmonella. If you’ve never seen them, they do exist (saw them at a store last weekend).

They also added more canned pet foods and pet treats to the list yesterday. Anyone with pets, check the websites. My Shadow has been eating home cooked meals since this thing started. Not hard to do and so worth doing for our four legged loved ones.

Back to your regularly scheduled Idol talk.

This year’s contestants are just strange. I can’t think of a better
    word to describe them.
Lakisha seems totally uninterested (where am I?).
    Melinda is a singing robot.
    Haley is a playboy centerfold.
Gina is a pop wannabe rocker chic (get rid of the stud)
Chris is JT on (I can’t say it here),
    Phil is from outer space.
Jordin is a 45 year old who had her birth certificate
changed so she could qualify for AI.
Blake was born in a time capsule.
Sanjaya has his pulse on America and will have the last laugh.

Boston review for Taylor – THAT’S what I’m talkin’ about!

Idol last night – They sang, overall, better than they have all year, but with this group of boring contestants, that is faint praise indeed. It absolutely would not surprise me if Lakisha went home. I think she ruined, for the first time, a really great song.

That said, Idol/the Judges clearly want Haley and Phil gone. I think those two over Sanjaya, who keeps the buzz mill running for the show. They are all on the tour, so order of going home is meaningless. And, of course, who ultimately wins is also meaningless.

While Melinda can overdo the who-little-ol-me bit, she is such a joy to hear sing. Her phrasing, said many times before, is impeccable.

  • beachn

    Daughtry is an enigma.
Has anything like this happened in the past?
How can he be outselling Kelly and Carrie??
Who are these fans and what woodwork did they

I scratch my head over this and say hmmmmm.
Makes me think he will be a one cd wonder.

  • Abilymom

MJ had said last night that the Herald review would be key, and I couldn’t be happier with that review! It was spot on.

There’s no two ways about it, the show last night was awesome!

Abily! Did you have a blast?

  • hs

    Hi everyone!

Ok, enough with the boob exposure, already! I mean, geesh, Lakisha, tuck ‘em in, girl! Same for Haley. I’m tired of the over-exposure. And I am on board the “Melinda is boring” train. I struggle to see how they could possibly market her for anything other than Broadway.

I really liked Blake, Gina and Jordan last night.

    Sanjaya continues to entertain.

So, my prediction for bottom three: Phil, Sanjaya, Haley. Haley gets the boot. Maybe this is just wishful thinking.

If they go for shock value, then Lakisha or Sanjaya get the boot.

LaKisha being in the bottom three doesnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t surprise me either..
I was NOT impressed with her rendition of Stormy Weatherà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ¦

I was very annoyed that she decided to completely ignore Tony’s advice on how to end the song. If TPTB want us to like her, they are going to have to stop showing us her ignoring the coaches’ sage advice because I know it biases my opinion of her performances. Perhaps that is part of the reason people didn’t pick up the phone for her (plus, I did not like her phrasing).

And Tony was right about the ending, IMO.

  • rher

I disagree with Sanjaya being the only one with personality. It is like being at a restaurant and wanting desert. The cake is so-so but the atmosphere is fantastic. You go home saying the food was great. Take it out of context and it wasn’t. I am seeing nothing more than smoke and mirrors with Sanjaya. Who is going to buy his album? Please don’t tell me the tweens will. Show me a tween that will! I know a bunch of them, and they aren’t buying his personality or his voice. All I hear is EWWW!

LisaB, wasn’t there a story about how PopIdol was canned in favor of X-Factor because the judges and producers felt the voting public were hijacking the show. I’m not saying the voting public has it all wrong. For one, the judges put Sanjaya there (and the rest of them). Everyone likes train-wreck TV at least a little bit, and I have a feeling that most people that vote for Sanjaya enjoy a bit of the trainwreck. But after it is over, the producers will slice him, dice him, and serve him out, but he will get stale fast. I’m wondering again, who is going to buy his record?

okay, enough with the food analogies. I’m going to finish my breakfast.

It must be very cool to see someone you adore in concert right in your own hometown. No hassles, no running for a plane or tight schedule to keep and you can go home to your comfy bed when the fun is over.

There is some truth in that Rher.

The second season winner of Pop Idol was a disaster, but she was backed by Simon.

Her appeal imo was because she was extremely overweight, rather than a great singer. Saying that the overall talent wasn’t that brilliant.

X Factor has also suffered from the anti Simon vote,(although the judges can pick from the bottom two, which is rather unfair imo). I wonder if that’s why they changing up a bit for next seasons show.

Ultimately TPTB have no one but themselves to blame, they put these people on our screens and ask us to vote.

I was very annoyed that she decided to completely ignore Tonyà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s advice on how to end the song

I’m starting to think we share brain cells. I was also annoyed. She does this every week. I do admire that she knows what she wants to do, however, these people have been in the business for years and she should at least consider their advice.

  • Allen

I thought Melinda was fantastic last night, easily the best of the evening. The last few weeks for her have been a little dissapointing just because her song choices have been a little blah. She has still wrung great performances out of them though. This time, she picked a great song and tore it up.

I never thought Lakisha was going to go the distance and would probably go out somwhere around 7-5 Her being in the bottom three this early while getting the pimp spot would be somewhat surprising though.

Really kind of surprised by Phil’s standings in DialIdol (although the numbers are close enough that I am not sure how accurate it really is currently, other than Melinda being safe). I thought he was really boring last night which coupled with going early often means you are going home.

I think it is amazing that ignoring the advice given by the pros seems to be pretty standard this year. Phil ignored his advice last night, as did Blake and Lakisha. Thank goodness Haley listened since Tony was right – she entirely missed the point of the song.

We all know that Lakisha and others have also ignored advice in previous weeks. I wonder why this is so prevalent? Do they honestly think they know better?

  • http://www.chris-sligh.info steve-o-meter

Lakisha ended on a bad note….I was like, um, did the song end? and what was with the look on her face when she stopped singing?

I thought last night was booooooooooooring! But I’m biased.

    Even Sanjie was meh.

I thought he was really boring last night which coupled with going early often means you are going home.

I think that he’s getting a boost from being in the bottom 3 last week (scared his voting block), the judges were a bit over the top in the criticism of him (won him some pity votes) and the answer he gave to Ryan about his wife (won him some votes for being sweet).

Placements on any given AI are a complex calculation of a lot of factors (how well you sang, how the judges re-acted, performance slot, whether you were better or worse than usual, if you gimmick is getting old, placement the previous week, interactions with Ryan, solid voting fan-block, how you looked, how obscure was the song choice, etc).

If Haley survives this week, it will be because the judges were so completely rude to her. You may not like her or think she should be in the competition, but by goodness, show her a little respect by doing your freakin’ job. It’s not that hard people.

    RE: BOSTON HERALD

Ità ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s never been clearer than during his sold-out Boston debut at Avalon last night: Taylor Hicks had no business being on à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Idolà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ to begin with. Ità ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s just not his aesthetic. And thatà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s not necessarily a bad thing.

Well, if he never went to Idol, we’d have never heard of him. Also, the above review from the Herald just shows that Taylor has his own “kind” of music that appeals to people. He has to stick with it instead of allowing people to re-define him the way they see fit in today’s pop market.

Judging from the crazy response to his two songs, HIS NEXT ALBUM *HAS TO* include — SOMEHOW and THE FALL. He’d be foolish not to do it. These are two of his best compositions and define who he truly is.

RE: Phil just didnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t deliver

The ironic thing in this competition is this — the more the fans realize you’re in danger of going, the more determined they will be to keep you there. He ranks second to Melinda at DialIdol.

What p–sses me off is Jordin Spark’s low standing ( below SANJAYA !! ).

And we just might have the surprise exit of the night — Lakisha Jones, who is just hanging by a thread above Haley.

  • Metta

    Hey everyone! Checking in.

Last nite was the best I’ve ever seen Taylor. Then, hung out at the hotel lounge with MJ, Folk and Hezz. Met Abily and her awesome husband briefly after the show. They are very coool people. Wish we had more time.

This morning Hezz and Folk and I had breakfast. I am still on a high after last nite. There aren’t enough adjectives to describe how terrrifc the concert was. I decided to do the early line up thing and was 6th place. It was fun bonding with the others in line. Front row and dead center cannot be beat. My new favorite song is “Compared To What” since during that, Tay looked right at me twice and smiled. But it’s all in vain, Tay, because I am in love with your opening act, Toby Lightman. She has a fantastic bluesy voice, great songs, and a very endearing personality.

A tres cool experience all around.

  • Little Boy Blue

If Haley survives this week, it will be because the judges were so completely rude to her.

Note though, Simon has now gone from being completely negative on Sanjaya to actually “praising” him to see if the tactic will work.

I never thought the words “incredible” can be used to describe Sanjaya’s performance — but there it is, straight from the mouth of Simon himself.

The man is desperate to try anything to get the kid off the show including using words normally ascribed to great performances. Unfortunately, it ain’t gonna work tonight.

My guess is we’ll be missing some pretty legs next week after tonight’s show.

Another great show at Avalon last night. I like the Avalon so much better than the HOB. Maybe because I’ve already been there so many times for other shows. But, I never feel all squished and claustaphobic. And it’s easy to get a spot where you can see.

Great show last night! I’ll have more later..

Chris Sligh back in upstate after ‘Idol’ competition

After being voted off “American Idol” last week, Chris Sligh made his way back to the upstate Tuesday night.

FOX Carolina interviewed Sligh as he stepped off the escalator at the Greenville-Spartanburg International Airport on Tuesday night. He was also greeted by fans who say they are part of the “Fro Patro,” the self-proclaimed groupies of Chris Sligh.

Sligh said he missed his wife and puppies while he was in Hollywood.

Sligh joined Ben Hoover, Stephanie Maxwell and Melissa Jones during The Morning News on Wednesday. When asked about his future in the entertainment business, Sligh said he has met with people from FOX’s casting department about possibly a role in a drama or sit-com.

Sligh’s band, “Half Past Forever,” recently released an album called “Take A Chance On Something Beautiful.” The band has moved into first place in the rock category in Music Nation’s competition. The winner receives a record deal with Epic, a record company.

How about snorting your father’s ashes (with a coke chaser)? Now he’s saying it’s not true. He’s never been the same since falling out of that coconut tree.

    An à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’Idolà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’ still out on soul patrol
Proving that gray matters, Hicks dances his way to Westbury
    BY DANIEL BUBBEO

Don’t let the gray hair fool you: If you look at Taylor Hicks’ roots, they have more than a tinge of Elvis. Not only was the King one of the inspirations for Hicks’ singing but also for that fancy footwork that gets his Soul Patrol fans on their feet.

    SNIP SNIP SNIP

Hicks also doesn’t seem fazed that his self-named disc, which debuted at No. 2 in December on the album charts, was nowhere to be found on Billboard’s Top 100 this week, while fourth-place finisher Chris Daughtry’s album, which spent several weeks at No. 1, is still in the No. 4 spot after 18 weeks. “I think the record-buying public and the TV audience might be a little different,” he says. “My job isn’t to compare numbers. My job is to go out and play the best music to my fans.

Lovers of Gray Charles, as Hicks’ fans affectionately call him, can expect him to perform about 18 songs Saturday night, including his latest single, “Just to Feel That Way.” As he does after every show, Hicks will be on hand to meet and greet his fans. “I’m very grateful to the Soul Patrol. It’s a big demographic, a variety of people of all ages, which is cool. You want that as an artist,” he said.

I don’t think the judges were rude at all to Haley, the whole preinterview she was saying how she only cared about simons advice, so when it came time to judging that’s what paula and randy gave her, and simon said it was pagenty and she had great legs, pretty much sums up the performance? When she was dancing infront of those guys in the front row i thought i was at a strip club, they looked like they wanted to shove some dollar bills down her dress.
Oh and Gina, once again, looks like hot topic threw up on her, girl you can dress nice and abandon the “rocker” thing sometimes! it’d probably make you look less lumpy

It’s fun to compare idol performances.

Here’s Clay Aiekn’s version of MACK THE KNIFE :

    http://youtube.com/watch?v=cNXJ54ynYC8

Now, compare that with BLAKE LEWIS :

    http://youtube.com/watch?v=8CGBYIR6_6w

For me, It’s clear that Clay has the better vocals, however, I think Blake might give Clay a run for the money in terms of performance.

    Your opinion ?

  • MaryR

Bobbi: “We all know that Lakisha and others have also ignored advice in previous weeks. I wonder why this is so prevalent? Do they honestly think they know better?”

    ——

Obviously they do. After all, they were bank tellers, waitresses, students, etc before they won a spot on the show. Being able to sing karaoke rather well makes you a highly trained musician and know it all, not needing the advice of those who have been doing it for decades.

  • radname

i don’t think they have the time to make a new arrangement. They’ve already practiced with the band and in my guess, recorded the song by then so you can’t really change the performance from the recording. If you see the mentor on Sunday, you have Monday, that’s it. then Tuesday you’re in rehersals all day/ live show at night.

I do think the judges were rude to Haley, but she kind of deserved it. I mean, when you dress like that, especially considering the criticism she constantly gets from the judges and from the press and the fact that she’s consistently a low vote-getter…by dressing like that, she’s basically telling America “please ignore my boring singing and bland personality and vote for my T&A.” If that’s what she’s asking AMERICA to do, what’s so wrong when the JUDGES do it?

the only thing i can think of is rude is that they called out her plan, she obviously is sexing it up to get votes, i mean adding the “and you, and you and you”s but not really understanding that they don’t fit with the lyrics? and then singing the whole song all flirty like, when its supposed to be sung to one person. and the shaking of the ass and titties. with the little kicks at the end, i laughed out loud at her face in the second one because it was more deranged then cute.
i’m expect this to be her face tomorrow :| , with a little of this when she realizes she’s in the bottom 2 again :…( (her face gets longer when she cries.)

Can’t change an arrangement three days prior to the show? Haven’t they often changed songs on singers 2 days before the show? In real life, arrangements are changed on the day of a show.

Many things being asked of these singers have more to do with interpretation rather than arrangement. Singing “Mack the Knife” in a more menacing manner, with more grit, requires no musical change, only a change of attitude. Discarding a tag doesn’t change the musical arrangement of the band drastically. Speeding up the tempo does not change the arrangement.

Why the charade of a coach if it makes no difference?

Obviously Clay has a better voice than Blake but that was then. Why in the world would you want to compare them? Their styles are completely different. I like Blake because of the overall package and not just on his voice. I think he is the best at performing this season which is the comparison that counts.

  • radname

and speeding up the tempo does change the arrangement, it makes it faster.

Because a recording must be exactly like a live performance??

That’s what they’re selling them as, they’re not saying oh go online and buy the recording blake would have done two days ago until he met tony bennet and changed it! because if people liked what they saw on the stage better then the recording they’d be angry that they only get a shoddy version of it. In real life recordings don’t have to be like live perfomances, on idol they do because thats what they’re selling. When they say “buy a full length mp3 of last nights performances” they’re not saying (may or may not be the actual performance you heard last night)

  • radname

No, an arrangement is how the piece is put together, not how fast or slow it goes

which ALSO includes the tempo. If you want to make the song faster, you are changing the arrangement of it because sometimes it might change from 4/4 to 2/4 time or vice versa

…Most people feel that Stern is saving Sanjaya. I see it differently. Sanjaya is saving Stern. Think about it. Now that Stern is playing to smaller paying audiences at Sirius, when was the last time he made headlines the way he is now?

In a brilliant move, Stern has been able to piggyback on the success of American Idol, playing an integral part in one of the more fascinating developments of an already popular show.

The non-Sirius subscriber is now starting to read about what Stern is saying on his show. Curiosity is starting to kick in, just as it did when Stern went on a media blitz over the 2005 holiday season, as he bid terrestrial radio goodbye…

LaKisha gets praise from ‘Idol’ producer

Flint’s LaKisha Jones and her big, booming voice are doing “extremely well” on this year’s “American Idol,” says Ken Warwick, one of the Fox television show’s creators and executive producers.

“With LaKisha, she is not one of the most dynamic performers, but Aretha Franklin got there by standing there and letting hold of that voice,” Warwick said in a conference call Tuesday with reporters from various publications, including The Flint Journal.

He wouldn’t say how she or the other contestants are doing in the overall voting…

No, changing tempos does not change the time signature in the score.

  • bean99

I think the reason the singers don’t always listen to the coaches is that they have to take into consideration their voices & style where the coach hears them for probably 5 mins. tops. I’ve given Lakisha a bad rap for not listening but now that I know when they get the advice, it would be far to late to completely change her song (like Lulu advised). As for making Mack the Knife more menacing, I’ve never seen it sung that way.

yes it can, if i was re-writing a peice of music to be performed on AI would i not have the tempo in mind when i wrote it? Changing the song in anyway is changing the arrangement of the song. You’re changing how it was originally performed. 2/4 is known as “half-time” which is playing the song twice as fast

radname, you do not know what you are talking about. At all. Time signatures and tempos are completely different things. Tempos are things like largo, allegro, grave and andante. Tempos can easily be adjusted. The conductor/band leader sets the tempo and everbody follows along
    Here, read up about it:

    Tempo
    Time Signature

  • MaryR

No radname. 2/4 is not “half time” (2/2 is cut time). If I write a piece of music in 4/4 with a tempo of quarter note = 60 (60 quarter notes in one minute) changing the tempo means that you change how many quarter notes fit in one minute. Take your hand and beat 60 beats in one minute. Do it a bit faster to, say, 70 beats in one minute and you have changed the tempo. The music would still be notated in 4/4 with a tempo of a quarter note = 70. You do not notate the music any differently, you just change how fast the beat of the quarter note occurs.

Or in layman’s terms, to change the tempo you tap your foot faster or slower than you did before.

Tell me I’m not dreaming! Taylor will be coming to the South Shore Music Circus in Cohasset, and the Cape Cod Meolody Tent in Hyannis! Stick a fork in me. I’m ready. After last night I was willing to follow him anywhere, but if I can stay in Masschusetts, my family might be happier!

Hey Dingo! It was great hearing your voice. Being able to show you in such a small way, that I appreciate your “cyber friendship”, quick wit, and wisdom, made last night even more special!

  • radname

saying the tempo has no affect on an arrangement is like saying playing a note staccato has no affect on the arrangement

  • stryker

Tell me Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢m not dreaming! Taylor will be coming to the South Shore Music Circus in Cohasset, and the Cape Cod Meolody Tent in Hyannis!

where oh where did you hear this? please tell me it’s legit!

  • Kirsten

radname: saying the tempo has no affect on an arrangement is like saying playing a note staccato has no affect on the arrangement

Actually, I would agree with that because each is such a simple modification that no professional musician would think twice about incorporating at the last second. Playing a note staccato is dead simple. Heck, an elementry school band would have been able to accept both changes at the last second.

  • MaryR

It doesn’t radname. An arrangement is how the piece is put together. It includes harmonies and rhythms. Your argument makes no sense. Let’s say I sing Beethoven’s 9th “Ode to Joy”. One day the conductor has had a lot of caffeine and we sing it at a quarter equalling 75. The next day the conductor is a bit tired and we sing it at a quarter equalling 65. We have hardly changed the arrangment of Beethoven’s 9th.

  • radname

if you were playing the song up to monday night as full notes, then you were going okay its tuesday lets play them all staccato today! you don’t think that changes anything about the song? usually when the tempo is picked up things are played faster, slurring occurs in clarinets and trumpets because there isn’t enough time for them to do individual notes

  • radname

and how the peice is put together ALSO includes the tempo of the song.

  • radname

and MaryR if you have a conductor doing that, then they are an awful conductor. I don’t know how many of you have actually played an instrument before, but elementry students wouldn’t be able to play staccato unless they had atleast been playing for a year, the way you form the staccato in your mouth (if you are using a trumpet, since i played that instrument for three years) is not that easy, since you have to move your lips and shove your tongue out at the same time (yeah i know that sounds slightly sexual but its not supposed to be)

  • MaryR

? usually when the tempo is picked up things are played faster, slurring occurs in clarinets and trumpets because there isnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t enough time for them to do individual notes

    —-

Maybe in high school, but not with pros. And tempo, unless started with a metronome is always slightly different with each performance.

  • MaryR

radname – I am a professional musician, with a Master’s degree in music. By the time you are a professional you have practiced thousands of hours and know how to make the required articulations at many different tempi.

  • radname

slurring occurs in the pros as well, sometimes it is added as an affect. Tempo is always going to be different with each performance, which changes the performance does it not?

  • MaryR

And, radname, conductors are humans, not metronomes. Tempi vary every performance.

  • radname

to be a good conductor you have to have an internalized metronome, same with being an excellent musician

Hellow guyss… Just dropping by to say hi and can’t wait for the Boston show reviews… :) I hope a audio/video of “Somehow” would surface! One of my most favorite TH original… I have to have it! If he does “In Your Time” in the future with this fantastic band, I’ll be satisfied. :happy_tb:

Too bad that jazz album news was a fake. I’ve always thought Taylor and his music is kinda jazzy. Like “In Your Time” and the music he does in this solo tour. I downloaded a cellcert recording of one his shows, I was surprised when I opened it… I thought it was a recording of one of the performances I recorded during a int’l jazz festival in my city recently. It’ fits right in — amost very jazz fusion. Someone mentioned that Taylor’s music isn’t soul… Nope, it’s a blend of soul, blues, funk, jazz, pop, and southern rock presented in a jam band manner with a lot of soul. Improvisation, call-and-response, funky and jazzy walking bass line, bluesy rootsy guitar licks, jazzy saxophone (wish Jeff was there), pop keyboard, organ, hard-core drums, r&b backing vocals, soul-blues-southern rock lead vocal…It’s all there. Someone said the band is more like an ensemble… I agree. Very musical…

Pam, I’m with you on that T-E jazz album. Hehe. :mrgreen_wp: Speaking of E, I hope there would be downloadable version of that rehearsals.com performances. Just downloaded his Ellen performance of “Movin’ On”… Man that was HAWT! Awesome.

Metta, I LOVE “Compared to What” too. Have only listened to snippets but I can tell it’s fantastic.

    Season 6:
    Great – Melinda
    Very Good – Lakisha, Jordin
    Good – Chris
Ok – Blake (Go Team Plaid!), Phil (he actually has a very very good voice), Gina (boring), Haley, Sanjaya (he’s not that bad… kinda charming)

Who I want gone: Haley!! She reminds me of Moulin Rouge… Voulez vous coucher avec moi (sp??)… Go hooooomeeee…

purpleeee… Have you listened to Maliq?

So many things to say in one post. Heh. Gotta go sleep… Look forward to the reviews… :)

  • MaryR

Tempo is always going to be different with each performance, which changes the performance does it not?

radname – thus you have made my point. Your original argument was that asking Phil to sing faster causes lots of trouble, by requiring music to be rewritten. No it does not. But, yes, it can change how the music sounds. That is why Mr. Bennett asked Phil to sing the song FASTER.

Naturally, I have done a quick check of the Upstate NY Taylor dates being bandied about. The Niagara event is actually being held at Niagara-on-the-Lake in Ontario (Canada), not NY. It looks like a pricey fundraiser hosted by Dan Akroyd. Here’s a link – http://www.niagarawineauction.com/event_details.html

I’m betting that the Big Flats event is at Summer Stage at Tags, an outdoor music venue. That’s the only place it could be, really. Here’s a link:

  • Masshole

Taylor, The Pre-Show Show – and what a show it was

Arrived in Boston @ 4 and ambled down to the Avalon to check out the venue. Holey shit, Batman, there was a line of about 15-20 people already. I scrunched down and talked to the first three girls, laying against the building, who looked to be about 21 and they said they had been sitting there since ten am. Why, I asked. To get front row seats, I mean stands. Aint’ you never heard of shoving, I asked, and they said it couldn’t be done. I said bet I could do it and went into my old lady voice. Move aside sonny. Cane thwack, cane thwack. Alls I needed was the cane. They laughed. Asked them if they had eaten and they said guys from Taylor’s bus had been bringing them pizza all day. They were also invited inside for a tour of the bus. Said I ain’t doin’ this and took off for Kenmore Square and the pub down the street. Got some eats and a drink, then back to the venue.

The line was slowly growing and I hung out on some steps smoking (Ahm gonna feel lousy tomorrow) watching the press people. Wished I had brought my camera, but it’s a big mother. This stuff could be great photojournalism.

Took off for the pub again and kept checking the time, which was in slow mo. Antsy, back to the line after a drink. Now the Taylor girls were springing out of cabs. I knew they were Taylor girls because they were all attired in too-tight Taylor tee shirts over other shirts. No bedazzles, just an army of tee shirts. They looked silly, but I can’t say too much because I was wearing bright blue reflective sun glasses on a day the clouds were an arms length away. (Ah, but I’m supposed to, opthamologist decree. Excuses, Excuses)

The camera folks decided this was the time to get it rocking. There were interviews with peeps from far away places – like Montreal – nice couple in back of me, who, as it turned out, did not know Taylor was in Maine last year. Oops. Then the cable news camera guy asked a group of shirts to, well, yell, sing, whatever, and they happily obliged.

I went over to him and ever so politely suggested he was creating the news. Yah, but this is only entertainment, he said. But you’re creating an image for the performer, I persisted. That ain’t right – about a hundred or more perfectly tame liner-uppers and guess who gets the pimp spot on Channel 8? Well, ya’ know it’s gonna happen. Go with the flow.

As the line grew, I spent my time talking with the Fox cameraman/reporter. Nice guy. And less aggressive than cable news. We discussed journalism. He had just lost his print job at the Trib. I assumed that was the Chicago Trib. Talked about creating the story. Mentioned I had been in antiwar events where press instructed everyone to chant or yell something and they did. Looked spontaneous on the news. Heh. Heh. And we discussed his interview with Taylor earlier, the state of journalism yada yada.

I took off again, and woke up another news guy in his car. Yo, rise and shine. Didn’t have the foresight to close the window. Okay, he weren’t really asleep, just spacing. He were pleasant, said he had three hours to kill. Don’t everyone, I queried – and wished I had parked where he did.

To pub for coffee and conversation with another concert goer beside me at the bar. She informed me the concert was at 7:30. Uh, uh, I says. Seven. She showed me her ticket. Godammit. My eyes popped ARGGGGG behind my shades.

Back to the line in twenty minutes, not even six thirty, but the damned thing had quadrupled (at least) and they were about to let people in early. To the end of the snake and onward to the show.

I got cahded; I wuz a happy woman.

It really was, Lisa B. I would say he’s the best male vocalist of season 6 now. He can do better. I really like his voice this week. My mom said exactly what Paula said during the performance… He sounded like Sinatra. I”m still with Team Plaid though. :mrgreen_wp:

Btw, wanna share some awesome musicians I saw at the jazz festival I mentioned before…

Tony Monaco – a fantastic jazz/blues Hammond 3B organ player! Great techniques and he played the organ with such intensity, with such feeling, even though there were only about 20 people watching that night — sweat, constipation face and everything! He performed a blues tune with the trio (Harvey Mason on drums) for the last song and I felt the venue turned into some kinda smokey dark bar. Very cool. :)

Tony Bennett Pulls Out Of ‘Idol’ Appearance
LOS ANGELES (April 4, 2007) — The show won’t be going on for Tony Bennett on tonight’s “American Idol.”

I hope so! The only thing better than a cheesy, pointy-pose group number is a cheesy, pointy-pose group number thrown together at the very last minute.

I would far rather have a group number than have Ryan run out the clock repeating what the judges said last night (thanks, Ryan, I watched that show already) while the poor contestants nervously try to figure out what expression they should have pasted on their face.

Well, never mind then; I won’t bother watching tonight. *sigh* I was really looking forward to his performance too.

I know MJ hasn’t posted ratings news for the week – because obviously, the week isn’t over yet – but this trend just fascinates me. Per the Programming Insider, AI pulled in 25.7 million viewers last night, compared to 28.8 million for the Top 9 last year. Aside from this year’s Top 24 results at 24.4 million, this is lowest rated performance episode in the past two seasons for which we have readily available charts. Discuss…

(And since I’m not a designated numbers person, if I’ve made any mistakes, please feel free to correct me.)

    ETA:

Could be heà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s ticked that the advice he gave was totally ignored, for the most part, and he just said to HELL with ALL this..

Hey there, emeralgem. *waves* Is it nice up there on that grassy knoll? Mind if I join you – ’cause that’s the exact same thing I thought. :) However, Tony does strike me as the type to rise above that crap, but I’m not too familiar with Tony Bennett in any respect other than his music.

  • Kylene

Well, if they have extra time, maybe they’ll have all of the bottom three contestants do a sing out. They did that once last year, didn’t they? Or the year before? I know they’ve done it in the past. Plus, this 3-3-3 set up they have is the one they like to use to play games of putting them in groups and then making the poor kids choose which group they think they belong in, then totally faking them out and being like, “BUZZ! WRONG-O!! You’re actually in the BOTTOM three, over there!!”

  • db

Nigel and Ken will need to find a new excuse.

Sanjaya overkill?? (Don’t mind me; I just like blaming everything on Sanjaya at this point…)

ETA: Just a thought, but the final Nielson numbers may be more favorable than the preliminary numbers, as they were last week.

    Daughtry is an enigma.
Has anything like this happened in the past?
How can he be outselling Kelly and Carrie??
Who are these fans and what woodwork did they

I scratch my head over this and say hmmmmm.
Makes me think he will be a one cd wonder.

He’s not even close to outselling Carrie.

After 18 weeks, Carrie’s “Some Hearts” had sold 2,456,660 albums.

After 18 weeks, Chris’s “Daughtry” had sold 2,039,337 albums.

db and JJ, Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢m thinking of rhymes for butterflies right now! We just need a melody with lots of significant key changes and glory notes (JJ, ask Diane to toss us a few to mull over). Must review Kevin Spaceyà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s SNL sketch from last year for pointers on what makes a great Idol song.

Do the butterflies make us proud while they are inside our heaven?

    Some melody choices:

Exciting day here on campus à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’ Justice Scalia is coming to talk to us. à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ¦.Hopefully ità ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ll be a great presentation and maybe heà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ll even take questions :-)

Please, ask him what he thinks about Sanjaya.

You know, I WANTED to…but when he actually DID call on me, fear consumed me and I ran with a question about rational basis review of laws burdening the free exercise of religion instead. Guess I need to grow a pair. :-) Also…he’s a lot like Chris Sligh. His humor translates well in person, but not in print at all.

    Hope Mr. Benedetto is okay!

I remember my Torts professor using “Justice Scalia” as an example of an oxymoron. Hee. I loved him.

So this is weird having really no idea who is leaving tonight, not that I really care. I want Sanjaya to stay and I want Blake to stay for Team Plaid, anyone else, eh….
Has Nigel’s post-show audio interview with that annoying obsequious guy popped up yet? Are we in for any faux-shockers?

Hee. He’s not my favorite but eh. Anyway, naturally, he didn’t really answer my question. Someone asked him whether or not he thought that the theory of original intent hampered civil rights, and he got really pissy. Which I didn’t mind because the kid who asked the question has been asking for it for a while now, and who better to lay the smackdown than a Supreme Court justice?

Regarding Michael Buble…this is an excerpt from an article yesterday in the Vancouver Sun digital.

“On this record, I said I wanted to be emotionally honest and the only way I know how to do that is to sing it live. Let me sing it three or four times, then take the best one of those four and the difference for me is it’s harder for me to listen to myself in this record because I can hear the flaws, but emotionally, finally it’s honest.

For Buble, it was a revelation and an understanding of what his fans meant when told him they preferred his shows to his CDs.

“Now I understand what it was about,” Buble said. “It was about emotion. With this music, lyrically, it’s so important to be emotionally truthful.”

Sounds like he took a page from Mr. Taylor Hicks.

Speaking of percentage drops, Elliottà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s drop is not good..It really shouldnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t be more than 50% the week after! :-(

    3 31 ELLIOTT YAMIN HICKORY RECORDS 27,023 -72%

More than 50 percent doesn’t seem to be that uncommon from what I have seen. Here are what I have heard a few other people’s 2nd week drops to be (I think these are for their latest CDs, not 100 percent sure though)…

    Kelly Clarkson – 57%
    Clay Aiken – 61%
    Christina Aguilera – 62%
    Justin Timberlake – 67%
    Beyonce – 72%

Just wanted to mention two things about Season 6:

    1. Here’s an account of someone who was in the audience and said the performances looked different live. He mentions Gina, Blake, Jordin and Melinda specifically.

    http://popwatch.ew.com/popwatch/2007/04/on_the_scene_id.html

    2. Gina’s betting odds fell into the negatives overnight; much like Brandon, Steph and Chris’s did on the Wednesdays they were eliminated (on Tuesday, they were in the positives). Plus she is/was at number 9 on the aol poll a little while ago. Curtains for Gina, tonight?

  • thedingoateyobaby

Cateye, ahm the type who tends ta get all excited about the THOUGHT of doing something but the actual event tends to bore me. Its the lead up to the orgasm (I mean excitement) that gets me going. If its Niagara on the lake its about an hour and 15 minutes tops from me. In the month of June its a cakewalk.

I will have ta see. I got no friends who will go, they have had it with me lmao. I will see if I can blackmail one of them.

Naturally, I have done a quick check of the Upstate NY Taylor dates being bandied about. The Niagara event is actually being held at Niagara-on-the-Lake in Ontario (Canada), not NY. It looks like a pricey fundraiser hosted by Dan Akroyd. Hereà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s a link – http://www.niagarawineauction.com/event_details.html

Gosh, I think that everyone needs to take a second listen/look at Phil Stacey. Im actually not a fan of anyone this season, other than some I think sing or entertain well…no one gets me excited. But with that said one of those I think sings good “is” Phil. It seems most don’t like his looks or singing or both. I wonder how much of that is the persona the “look” gives, and that influences how one hears him, as he is one of those that doesnt look good at all with a shaved head…and it makes his other features which are actually very very good looking. Beautiful eyes and smile. Try to picture him with some nice hair…photoshop him and see. I’m having a hard time understanding why y’all seem to dislike him. I thought last night vocally he was one of the better ones. oh well….

  • ealbino

Although it doesn’t look good on paper..

    Elliott takes a plunge
As I feared, Elliott Yamin’s sales took a sizable hit in the album’s second week, according to Nielsen SoundScan. He drops from No. 3 to No. 28 on the chart, selling 30,000 — one-third of his first week’s sales. That brings his total to 120,000, but at this pace it will be a fairly long, hard slog to top a quarter million.

Other Idols on the album chart (and a few who have fallen off):

    > Daughtry is once again king of the charting Idols, but he drops 4-6, selling 66,000 — 13% off the previous week’s total. Grand total is 2.11 million.

    > Carrie falls 15-16, only because there are 10 debuts ahead of her. Her sales were up 4% to 39,000, and her total is 5.16 million.

    > Katharine drops 74-93, falling 12% in sales down to 9,900 for a total of 279,000.

    > Kellie falls 131-150, selling 6,100, 9% off the previous week, for a total of 484,000. Should still be three weeks to the 500,000 mark, though.

    > Fantasia’s down 139-152 on the chart, selling 6,000 copies, down just 3%. Total: 336,000

    > Off the chart, Taylor sold 2,900, down from 3,400 the previous week. Total: 664,000. Ruben sold 1,300, down from 1,500, for a total of 218,000. Clay sold 700, down from 800, to bring his total to 507,000. And Kelly Clarkson sold 4,300, down a bit from 4,400, for a total of 5.7 million.

Gwen Stefani’s Sweet Escape jumps to No. 1 on the digital songs chart, selling 140,000 in the week she performed on Idol.

    American Idol – Week 12

If Melinda Doolittle does not win “American Idol” she will be next year’s Chris Daughtry: As much as she steps up to the plate in every genre chosen, she possesses the interpretive ability to knock a song out of the park time and time again. That’s why “Daughtry” is outselling Katharine McPhee and Taylor Hicks on the album charts; Doolittle distances herself weekly from the competition with personality and vocal chops, especially when the program fits her like a glove as it did this week with standards……..

American Idol: Bubles are in, Bennetts are out for tonight

Crooner Tony Bennett has pulled out of a performance on tonight’s American Idol results show, citing a bad cold.

Some experts are wondering if Tony Bennett pulled out because he lost his voice and was afraid of Americans finding this out firsthand.

The “I Left My Heart In San Francisco” singer coached the remaining nine finalists prior to last night’s standards sing-off, but won’t appear tonight.

Instead, pal Michael Buble will stand in for him, according to reports, after accepting a last-minute offer to replace his own American idol.

You know, lots of people disagree about a lot of things. It’s the way society is. I think the one thing everyone can agree on is that music and art are subjective. Everyone is going to have different tastes. I completely disagree with you when you say Taylor is the “master of song interpretation.” I completely disagree when you say anything he does is “masterful.” Even if someone thinks Sanjaya is the most amazing singer, it does not mean they have their head up their ass. If people walked around thinking that their opinions are the only right ones, it would be disasterous. Thank god not everyone is like that.

Actually, griz, Kat has quite a nice voice. And actually, her CD sales are pretty good. Jennifer Lopez only sold about 60k in her first week and she IS a huge star. Her album is still charting. If you consider her sales “poor” than you must only listen to Daughtry, Carrie Underwood, Beyonce, the Pussycat Dolls and other “hot sellers” at the moment. It’s interesting that you find mainstream success so crucial to someone’s singing career. By the way, nobody is calling her a huge star except her neurotic fans.

AFan – Kat’s CD sales are awful, come on, be honest here. Bo Bice, another runner-up has sold 3x as much as her, and he was dropped by the label (so I’ve heard) – and Kat has had FAR more publicity that he ever had.

RCA is not happy, I can guarantee you.

  • http://www.idolicious.com Kat

Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢m heard rumors that Ginaà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s leaving, Philà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s leaving, and even a rumor that Nigel may have said on Ryanà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s show that ità ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s a big shocker tonight so some think it means Lakisha going.

Doesn’t Nigel usually give a pre-show online interview? What did he say tonight?

Re: Kat’s sales. So she sells 300K. Do I care? No. Do her fans care? No. They shouldn’t. If they love her that’s enough. I’m more curious to see what happens in the next couple of years, when Kat’s teenage fans–I believe they constitute the vast majority of her fanbase–grow up and out of “your eyes/I’m over it”-style lyrics. I want to see if she settles into a more timeless style, if she tries to constantly adapt a la Timberlake, or if she gives up music completely for an “acting” career (either a legitimate one, or one that consists mainly of hosting C-list reality shows).

Thanks…I’m in class so I just keep hitting “refresh” so as not to appear TOO obvious that I’m surfing the ‘net. Thank God I can type w/o having to look at the screen. :-)

Ità ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s interesting that you find mainstream success so crucial to someoneà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s singing career.

Actually AFan, I never said that. In fact, I agree with you. Many brilliant singers and artists are not mainstream successes (on Top 40 radio). Kat, however, is not one of them.

  • AFan

AFan – Katà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s CD sales are awful, come on, be honest here.

uhh, i dont think they’re awful at all. you have no idea if rca is happy with her or not. baseless assumptions. i could bring someone else into the picture when talking about who rca is upset with but i won’t because i hate those discussions. even though i really want to.
Kat – I agree. I think she made this record particularly to get into the top 40 market. I personally think she has too much potential to just completely disappear. I’m also interested to see what she turns into.

  • http://www.idolicious.com Kat

i could bring someone else into the picture when talking about who rca is upset with but i wonà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t because i hate those discussions. even though i really want to.

If RCA needs to be upset with someone, they should be upset with the marketers, not Taylor and/or Katharine personally. Both of them had enough popular momentum to get into the final two of Idol, yet none of them met popular expectations in sales. Maybe RCA needs to re-examine how it treats American Idol contestants (the “commerce vs. art” dichotomy), and maybe both Kat and Taylor’s management firms need to reevaulate some of their methods as well.

griz, thanks for putting up the link to Somehow. That was fast wasn’t it? I still like the full acoustic version but both are beautiful.

when Katà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s teenage fansà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’I believe they constitute the vast majority of her fanbase

Hey there, I’m 29 and a huge Katharine fan, I don’t think she’s a HUGE star and I don’t worship her because she’s a pretty, pretty princess either as someone stated yesterday, I just like her, that’s it, no strings attached, I’m happy with every single thing she has done and unlike others, I don’t expect her to just go away, she has far to much potential and I’m sorry you can’t see that, but you have an opinion and you know what they say about opinions, they are like assholes, everybody has one.

P.S. Most of the Kat Fan Family that I talk and chat with are 25 and older, not little teeny boppers.

I don’t know why I keep responding to all this Kat hate, I guess there is something inside me that just finds it hard to see it written. Anyway have a lovely night.

  • http://www.idolicious.com Kat

she has far to much potential and Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢m sorry you canà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t see that

No need to feel sorry for me. My life is perfectly full and vibrant without Katharine in it. :-)

I’m sure all the Idols have diverse fanbases, but there’s no arguing that a lot of Kat’s fans are teens (just look at IDF, for cryin’ out loud), just like there’s not a whole lot of debate as to whether Taylor has a lot of middle-aged female fans. Sure, they have other fans (I’m a Taylor fan and I’m 24), but these blocs make up a big demographic.

  • emeralgem

I donà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t worship her because sheà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s a pretty, pretty princess either as someone stated yesterday, I just like her,

    _____________________________________

Personally, I don’t have a problem with anyone liking her..Tto each his own..
In reference to the pretty, pretty princess remark, I don’t view her as a pretty, pretty princess, I’ve seen pictures of her w/o all the makeup, and she is just a regular looking girl..There are millions of young women in this world that are as pretty or prettier than she is…

  • http://www.idolicious.com Kat

I think the pretty pretty princess comment was from me. And yeah, when I browse a place like IDF and constantly see thread titles consisting of no more than “omg kat in glasses shes so pretty!!!1111eleven!!1″, I do see that as evidence of pretty pretty princess syndrome.

People are going to like or dislike her persona. Some will see an adorable, goofy, slightly insecure girl, while others will see a passive-aggressive beeyotch. I see the latter, but, y’know, I don’t know Kat personally, so who knows?

Hey MJ’ers…if you want to hear a funny song about Sanjaya click on this link and choose the first song listed. The song is a parody of the Oak Ridge Boys “Elvira” A couple of local dj’s in Indy had this on this morning. The singer of the song is none other than Hunter “The Punter” Smith, the Punter for the Indianapolis Colts.

Hah! Joe Scarborough just said that AI will be tracking who is voting for JAYA (TM Coco), and they will not allow him to win……

What the frack kind of teaser is that?

*sitting here waiting for the story*

    :wallbash_tb:

PS: I know many of you are on chat, but I wanna be surprised in who gets the boot tonight (pls let it be Gina/Phil/Chris R) LMAO!

  • IGetCranked

Whoa, how fitting were the first lines of her song? I wasn’t a fan but I got a little choked up. I do hope she can afford more than a potato sack to wear during the tour.

  • cateye

Hmmmm, Carmen Rasmussen on Scarborough Country said she “definitely knows that the AI producers manipulate the vote to get the results they want”…..

    True? False?

  • WhatdIsay

Nigel is an ass. He needs to do his homework. Taylor was the Vote for the Worst candidate after Kellie left. They picked up Taylor because he was good and Simon kept being mean to him. NOT BECAUSE HE WAS THE WORST!! They certainly weren’t going to chose the PIMPED ones! That is a fact boys and girls with my hand up.
I think Simon messed Gina up by encouraging her to be a rocker chick.

  • koolmom

Are you having a Terrible, Horrible, No Good Very Bad Day?

I love this little book, have read it to my girls many times.

  • http://airincaol.com coco

Carrie Underwood was also VFTW nominee

  • cateye

Absolutely right, WhatIdSay! Taylor was the Worsters’ choice because they knew he’d be a marketing nightmare for TPTB…..they did like the guy! Just another way to screw with AI — choose someone they DON’T want…….

Of course with Sanjaya, it IS more of a “worst” choice because he may be marketable to the tweeners…..

  • emeralgem

Whoa, how fitting were the first lines of her song? I wasnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t a fan but I got a little choked up. I do hope she can afford more than a potato sack to wear during the tour.

kats digital sales are staying fairly stable and i’m sure RCA is thrilled with that. Not everyone, once hearing a song they like goes out and buys the cd, they usually end up just buying the song, and as more singles are released they end up buying the album.
AI is really trying to get rid of Haley, they’ve pinned her against the bottom person both times these past few weeks with pretty big fan bases, if she was pitted against phil and he left i don’t think it’d be such a bad thing.
I’m glad shes gone so i don’t have to listen to her go up into her “power” notes, or watch her parade in hot topic clothing singing celine dion and being PUNK RAWWWWWWK!!!!

  • http://www.idolicious.com Kat

ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢m sure RCA is thrilled with that.

Got an inside line to RCA, do you? :-) Seriously, no one here can be “sure” of anything. I “think” that RCA is probably disappointed that a lot of money was dumped into her. Her digital downloads (99 cents a pop) may be stable, but her total album sales numbers are kind of low. In the end it doesn’t matter, and I agree that her fans shouldn’t care…or try to spin things so they look better than they really are.

as more singles are released they end up buying the album.

Nope, sorry, not true. In fact, iTunes just this past week started prorating CDs in an effort to get people to complete their downloads. CD sales are in the toilet all around. If people like songs, they buy songs.

  • hicksaholic

I’m in the midst of a total disaster move so I have not read all the posts but wanted to know “did Dingo go to Boston?”

  • radname

    Nope, sorry, not true.

lol not true? okay then why do i do it, and a few other people have mentioned they do the same? i’m not trying to spin anything to look better, i’m saying what it is, i’m not saying things like OMG RCA IS GOING TO DROP HER!! SHE IS DOING HORRIBLE!! RCA is happy with her, and they will continue to promote her, she has a lot of potential in so many areas that will result in CD sales, you can say oh well she’s not selling any now is she!! But i’ve always viewed Kat as a grower, i never saw her coming out of the gate and being everywhere, i feel she’s slowly getting there and i think its the right course to take with her career at this point in time

  • http://jgrollersellshomes.com juliegr

H-E-L-P!!! Where is MJ’s recap of the two concerts she attended? Did I miss them? sob, sob, sob

  • http://www.idolicious.com Kat

    RCA is happy with her

Rad, why do you say things like that when you actually have no freakin idea what is going through the heads of the people at RCA? I have no idea. Maybe they are joyous over her sales. Maybe they’re kind of pissed. But I’m not going to make myself look like an idiot by stating things that I obviously don’t know. RCA also said they were thrilled with Bo Bice, and then they dropped him. No one knows.

lol not true? okay then why do i do it, and a few other people have mentioned they do the same?

lol then why do I NOT do it, and none of my friends do either? And now we’re even!

I don’t know what your personal record-buying habits are, but I know that CD sales are down by double-percentage digits and that companies like Apple/iTunes are working with record companies to find new ways to boost record sales. In fact, I just read several articles in the news about this. And I’m more inclined to beleive those articles and their raw numbers than to view the experiences of you and a handful of your friends as dispositive of the state of the music industry.

    Regarding the RESULTS shoe..

Totally unfair.. Phil and Haley have been in the bottom three every week, and they keep saving themselves and now Gina is gone ?

    WHAT THE CLUCK!?!??!

I really hope either Haley, Sanjaya and Phil are gone soon.

    What is wrong with America?
BLEEP w/ not only Blake not being in the top group but Sanjaya,Phil and Haley leaving before GINA.

She was one of my favs I can’t even be happy for Blake now.. But don’t worry I really am! Blake is my only hope in this competition!

Please, everyone use this is as a wake up call and get up off you lazy butts and vote for BLAKE

How is Kelly Clarkson still selling cd other then people liked what they heard on the radio so they bought it? It’s not like two years later they’re going “oh yeah, i forgot to buy her cd the first week it came out..” RCA is happy with her because they continue to support her. If they’re not happy with her, they’d stop promoting her and basically give up on her

  • http://www.idolicious.com Kat

Kelly Clarkson is still selling her last CD, sure, but not exactly at a rate of 80K per week.

RCA is happy with her because they continue to support her. If theyà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢re not happy with her, theyà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢d stop promoting her and basically give up on her

I think the one thing that can be stated about Katharine is that RCA will continue to milk her for all she is worth. She is gorgeous and looks wonderful on magazine covers, and they’d be fools not to play that out. But we’ll just have to wait and see if her popularity proves to be long-lasting, or if she’s forgotten by this time next year. I make no predictions, because I’m not a fortune-teller.

But I do want to thank you, rad, for explaining to me exactly how the recording industry works, based only on your own buying patterns. Wow, you know the ins and outs of the music biz, and Kat took Clive Davis by the balls and refused to allow him to release her album before January because she knew better than he did. It’s amazing that more multi-billion dollar industries aren’t run by 22-year-old girls! :-)

  • radname

Did i say anything about how the record industry works?…nope…i think kat will be around this time next year, she has atleast two singles left which will take her to the end of the year, and she’ll be working on a new cd

  • http://www.idolicious.com Kat
  • radname

They blitz promoted her the first week because..she’s not selling well even though they wouldn’t know how much she’s selling? that makes a lot of sense. I guess we’ll see come May what Open Toes can do since it’s rumoured to come out then for a summer song

  • radname

I can’t wait to hear what “soul” (adult pop) music taylor puts on his next record! but if its anything like his last one i probably won’t even give it a listen. i have yet to actually sit through his current one

  • http://www.idolicious.com Kat

I thought “my idol is better than your idol” is off-limits…?

I guess weà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ll see come May what Open Toes can do since ità ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s rumoured to come out then for a summer song

I thought that was an April Fools’ joke. So sad.

  • radname

my comment about taylor is nothing worse then your comments about kat?
but mj i will stop talking about season 5, i have better things to do tonight then argue with someone who thinks kat is a massive failure despite the proof staring them in the face

  • http://www.idolicious.com Kat

rad, in all friendliness, the thing was that we were just talking about Kat and no one else. I could be wrong, but I don’t think mj minds us discussing the past idols, but what she doesn’t want–I *think*–is me saying something nasty about kat and you going, “well, nyah nyah, your idol sucks too.”

It’s okay, I think Taylor’s new CD pretty much sucks too. But you’ve said you like his previous albums and that you thought they were very soulful (or something like that), which was awesome. Too bad Kat doesn’t have any similar previous music that I could hear.

  • radname

i didn’t think taylors previous cds were at all soul music, but i like some of his previous stuff compared to whats on his cd but i don’t really enjoy it all that much to be honest. there’s no song on there that makes me want to listen to it again as soon as its over (which to me makes a great song).
has anyone heard the downloads yet? supposidly haleys isn’t up yet, i’m listening to blakes and i love it (although he sounds english when he sings all the time?) his voice sounds great for this genre

  • http://myspace.com/girlgeek mj

    STOP IT.

  • http://www.idolicious.com Kat

Well, it’s all just a matter of taste. I could listen to Taylor’s old stuff over and over and over again. And I have. :-)

  • radname

Ginas arrangement is old fashion, she didn’t really change anything that way (except the tempo :tongue1_tb:)I feel bad for Haley, a lot of Gina fans are going to blame her instead of realizing the only reason Gina isn’t on the show is because not enough votes were cast for her as for the other contestants

  • radname

Chris’ is less whiney. i wish he would stop doing the runs (wow two exact same runs two lines apart) this was actually one of his better songs

  • radname

Jordin amazes me everytime she opens her mouth, her range and control over her voice for such a young age is phenominal. I could easily see me buying her cd. The trumpet playing in this song is excellent. She holds the last note on the recording a lot higher up and softer then she did live, and it was 6 seconds long

  • radname

Lakisha has a lot of control over her voice, i know a lot of people think shes really loud, but i don’t hear that from her in a lot of her top 12 performances, she has the voice to go out there and yell every performance and still sounds great, but she always makes it soft and appropriate. She has a weird way of pronouncing words, and her whole voice changes at some parts that kinda freaks me out a little to be honest lol. The band probably loved this week as they really got a chance to shine in everyone of the idols songs, and you really get to perform, not just play chords but actual notes and melodys

  • radname

Melinda time! Simons right, you can’t really criticize her too much, her phrasing is beautiful, her control is awesome. this song always reminds me of mr.hollands opus when they’re testing out singers. Does anyone know who the idol drummer is? he’s awesome and always looks like he’s having so much fun on stage. Melinda blues-is up the ending of this song. I have no idea what kind of cd she’ll put out after idol though

  • Kim

    AFan,

Hey buddy, if you’re on here – sorry about Gina. I know you really thought she rocked. Life isn’t always fair is it.

    aka – Gigit

  • radname

Paul Stacey, not really looking forward to listening to this one because of his performance on tv bored me to tears, he’s not a bad singer at all he just..isn’t anything special? Simon was right when he said it felt like he’d heard him a million times before. He doesn’t seem to have any life or joy in his voice when he sings this song, it does seem dreary at times.zzzzzzzz over a minute left and i feel like i’ve been listening to this song for hours
I’m guessing Phil, Haley will be in the bottom next week, it’ll be interesting to see who gets that last spot

  • radname

oh yes! Sanjaya, his voice on recording sounds a lot better live, but his singing voice is exactly like his speaking voice. His vocals are always flat lined, they’re all ——- there’s really no peaks or valleys in his voice, he pretty much stays within an octave always and never really goes for anything (unless its the last 3 seconds of the song) i’d like him to actually do something during the rest of the song. Picturing Sanjaya dancing cheek to cheek with a female makes me laugh

I must say that I saw Hits Daily Double predictions for album sales for this week- and man do sales suck. Even Hilary Duff is only expected to sell 125k in her debut week.

I bet the record industry is sweating bullets.

They are obviously going to have to reinvent the wheel becuase they are losing millions upon millions of dollars in CD sales.
