    Bland Aid
Despite the show’s good intentions, many of the performances on ”Idol Gives Back” week are less than inspired

Can I be brutally honest for a moment? I’m not so sure about this whole ”Idol Gives Back” thing.

Now before you start yelling, let me clarify: I’m not saying I oppose having America’s No. 1 television show raise money and awareness in the fight against global poverty. I’m not a monster à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’ or at least I like to think I’m not…

…You know, there are a lot of people out there who hate à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“American Idol.à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ But you have to give them credit: the show is trying to make a difference. Now, sure it has taken them six seasons, but the bottom line is, they are doing it. So good for them, and letà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s hope a lot of calls come in…

LaKisha criticized again on ‘Idol’ fund-raiser show
She falters with version of ‘I Believe’

Watching “American Idol” tackle a serious subject is like seeing a snack cake turn into a slice of whole-grain bread.

    It’s certainly a switch.

But Tuesday night’s “Idol Gives Back” theme was handled fairly well and gave viewers more to think about than whether they miss Sanjaya Malakar…..

    Idols aspire to inspire

TV/MUSIC REVIEW: Charity fest sparks moving tunes, mood

It’s a tricky proposition to combine pop-culture fluff with a noble cause.

But American Idol attempted it Tuesday night, when the show’s theme was “songs that inspire.” Because every vote translates into money to help starving children in Africa and America, the mood was more encouraging than normal. And Simon Cowell, shown in taped segments surrounded by poverty-stricken kids, was revealed to have a real, live heart….

POLITICALLY SPEAKING: Wisecracking Bush doesn’t mind giving Mich. representatives a lift

    Levin envies Jones’ votes

Carl Levin, Michigan’s senior senator in Washington, praised many Democrats for election victories in 2006 at the Jefferson Jackson Day dinner Saturday night at Cobo Hall in Detroit.

But his biggest compliment went to a would-be professional singer.

“One woman I really admire is LaKisha Jones,” he said of the ‘American Idol’ contestant from Flint. “She gets more votes in one week than I’ve gotten in my entire lifetime.”

Jones is among six finalists. One will be eliminated tonight.

    Sideshow | She’s a texting queen, only 13

…The emoticon-heavy writing genre – :-( – is annually glorified at the LG National Texting contest, sponsored by LG Electronics. This year’s texting champ, Morgan Pozgar, of Claysburg, Pa., in Blair County, beat out 200 others in New York by typing out the supercool word supercalifragilisticexpialidocious (from the movie Mary Poppins) in 15 seconds.

Ms. Pozgar, who is all of 13 years old, says she sends more than 8,000 text messages a month – which breaks down to a staggering 267 messages a day! (She’ll make the perfect court stenographer when she grows up.)….

    `Idol’ Voting Is Broken
Phone System Limitations Skew Tally Of Contestants’

Now that “American Idol” is headed toward the finish line, our nation faces the weekly challenge of deciding who will be voted off the show.

Thirty-eight million votes were tallied before Sanjaya Malakar was sent home last week. While 38 million sure sounds like a lot, remarkable data from DialIdol.com reveal that well over half of all phone vote attempts met a busy signal as the poll began, while throughout the voting hours, more often than not the chance of encountering a busy signal was above 15 percent. And therein lays a problem: the votes “American Idol” counts do not reflect true voting preferences. But this is an easily fixed problem…..

Good Morning everyone. My review of last night:

Chris – Thank god I missed him
    Melinda – YYYYAAAAWWWWNNNNN
Blake – I think he better watch out for Yoko Ono, she might come after him after that performance
Lakisha – Ditto what the judges said, I think it was arrogant to do that song
Phil – OK, my fingers are tightening up, not sure if I can type this, but he was very good last night
Jordin – Was Randy on drugs???? If you can’t sing well, sing loud.

I think it was soooooo cute that Simon didn’t know there were soup kitchens in LA. Maybe if he stopped taking limos and drove a care he can feed some.

Honestly, I do think its cute how Ryan seems to always try and defend the contestants. He always does that and I think it is nice. God, hate to say this too, but Ryan seems like he is a decent person.

‘Idol Gives Back’ and Simon Gives In

After weeks of buildup, it’s finally time for “Idol Gives Back” — a two-night orgy of advertising clutter and celebrity parading for the sake of raising money to spend on children living in poverty in Africa and the United States.

We know last night’s show is special because host Ryan Seacrest didn’t shave, show judge Simon Cowell is wearing a shirt with actual buttons, and Ivanka Trump or her clone is in the audience…

…Simon has been neutered for the occasion, saying nice things about all the Idolettes (except, of course, LaKisha Jones, about whom no one ever says anything nice anymore for reasons we have yet to figure out). When Simon visits a Los Angeles food bank during one of broadcast’s many taped bits, he actually demands people there hug him, giving us the vapors…

New releases from Melee, Hilary Duff and Angela Hacker

Angela Hacker, “The Winner Is Angela Hacker Nashville Star Season 5″ (Warner Bros.)

In what may be the crassest, most misguided move by a major label in memory, “Nashville Star” winner Angela Hacker is not only shot in the foot by the corporate powers-that-be but lopped off at the knees, filleted and beheaded.

Clearly stymied by the lack of commercial success for “Nashville Star’s” previous season victors (especially compared to the radio and fan acceptance for “American Idol’s” country contestants) new affiliate label Warner Bros. had this season’s “Nashville Star” finalists record the cover versions of the songs they performed on the USA Network show before a winner was announced in April. Doing it this way allowed for an album to be on the shelves a month later with the clunky title “The Winner Is …,” fleshed out with some instantly forgettable, uninspired, generic originals that Faith Hill would send back to the factory with a look of disgust.

Problem is, Hacker revealed serious, gritty vocal chops on “Nashville Star” that set her far apart from the field and there appeared a sense of artistry and maturity about her not regularly found on Nashville’s assembly line. Plus, she can sing rings around “Idol’s” vacuous Carrie Underwood.

Pity her debut is nothing more than a personality-free, karaoke product. The money grab will backfire and we’ll likely never hear from the talented Hacker again. Shame all around.

à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“American Idolà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ : No Sanjaya, but Jordin Sparks and Phil Stacey buoy the show, Melinda Doolittle solid as usual

    It was supposed to be an inspiring night on the Sanjaya-less à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“American Idolà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ tonight à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’ the first night of à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Idol Gives Back.à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ But I have to say, I wasnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t very inspired.

We can see the finish line. American Idol is down to the final six finalists and this seemingly never-ending season is almost over. Thank God. We need to watch real TV. Like Tori and Dean: Inn Love.

In celebration of the first Sanjaya-free week of “American Idol,” the show gave viewers a dose of socially conscious programming. On Tuesday’s performance night, the final six “AI” contestants sang “life anthem” songs, but before we got the dessert we had to eat our spinach.

Give It Up for Giving Back

At this point in every “American Idol” season, you realize that it isn’t just about being cute, or singing one or two songs well: It’s about going the distance, being able to blow everyone away week after week. A couple of the early frontrunners stumbled tonight, while another who hadn’t done all that well in the past seems to have found his footing.

Best of the night? Jordin Sparks, whose version of “You’ll Never Walk Alone” not only closed the show, but stopped it as well. Seventeen years old? Just impossible to believe. Even if she doesn’t win it all, this young woman is a powerhouse…

…I have to say, I miss Sanjaya, but he’s in a better place. Specifically, the White House Correspondents’ Dinner this past weekend. Whaaa? There he was, rubbing ponyhawks with all them bigwigs: Henry Kissinger, Charles Gibson, Sheryl Crow, Karl “Cuddles” Rove, Morgan Fairchild. Now he belongs to the ages, or something.

Race as a part of the ‘Idol’ race

From Fantasia Barrino’s ethereally elegant “Summertime” to Sanjaya’s floppy faux-hawk, America’s most popular television show would seem to have seen or sung about everything. Well, not quite everything.

“American Idol” is close to entering a brave new world that could transport its roughly 30 million viewers to an unseen spectacle after a half-dozen chart-topping seasons: two people of color in the finale. With six contestants still standing à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’ three white, two black and one biracial à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’ the chance to break the show’s ebony-and-ivory, or all ivory, finale cast has never been better. Why didnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t Will Smithà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s finger snapping at Live 8 eradicate poverty? Is there any possible way to salvage season six of Idol?

The judges were in top form. However Randy Jackson didnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t get the à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“paisley shirts arenà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t cool anymoreà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ memo. Paula Abdul looked like she had a plastic surgery touch up plus a collagen blast to her lips. And Simon Cowell was wearing a gay chefà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s shirt. Whatà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s up with that?……..

Oh, I didnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t get it, when did you send it???

The day of the Beacon show. Sigh. I knew your mind would be solely focused on the freak-on/kicking Metta’s a$$ that night.

Ok, I’ll just post it here.

    MANAGEMENT

A man in a hot air balloon realized he was lost. He reduced altitude and spotted a woman below. He descended a bit more and shouted, “Excuse me, can you help me? I promised a friend I would meet him an hour ago, but I don’t know where I am.”

The woman below replied, “You’re in a hot air balloon hovering approximately 30 feet above the ground. You’re between 40 and 41 degrees north latitude and between 59 and 60 degrees west longitude.”

“You must be an engineer,” said the balloonist.

“I am,” replied the woman, “How did you know?”

“Well,” answered the balloonist, “everything you told me is technically correct, but I’ve no idea what to make of your information, and the fact is I’m still lost.. Frankly, you’ve not been much help at all. If anything, you’ve delayed my trip.

“The woman below responded, “You must be in management.”

“I am,” replied the balloonist, “but how did you know?”

“Well,” said the woman, “you don’t know where you are or where you’re going.

You have risen to where you are, due to a large quantity of hot air.

You made a promise, which you’ve no idea how to keep and you
expect people beneath you to solve your problems.

The fact is you are in exactly the same position you were in before we met, but now, somehow, it’s my fault.”

    à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‹Idolà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ (finally) gives back

Were we watching a talent show or a telethon?

    Both, it turns out.

Yes, this is the week that à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“American Idolà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ has been hyping all season long. The show thatà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s made boatloads of cash for Fox is finally getting around to doing something for the less fortunate.

Don’t just vote – turn on the lights

One of the organizers of rallies supporting LaKisha Jones is urging Genesee County TV viewers to do more than call in to support Flint’s American Idol contestant.

Viewers mostly turn away from the reruns on NBC
The network hits a new ratings low.

With reruns dominating their schedules last week, NBC drew a record-low amount of viewers and CBS’ four-week streak of being the most-watched network in prime time was ended by Fox Broadcasting, according to figures released Tuesday by Nielsen Media Research.

With “American Idol” and “House” sweeping the top three spots, Fox averaged 10.26 million viewers for its 15 hours of prime-time programming between April 16 and Sunday. CBS was second, averaging 9.62 million for its 22 hours of programming…

Bucky Covington on Track for Success

Bucky Covington, who just released his debut album and cracked the Top 25 with his first single, “A Different World,” says he’s got a plan to ensure success.

“A year from now,” he tells The Charlotte Observer, “I’d like to have singles off the album and be double platinum. If I can have that, everything else will fall in line.”

Bucky says his life has definitely changed for the better since he left the family auto shop to pursue a career in music. He’s been able to buy a 2,800-square-foot home on two acres near Nashville, a Ford pickup and a new motorcycle.

“I’m doing something I love, though it’s busier than what I imagined back at the body shop,” he says. “Back then, I thought I’d go out and play a few songs and put out an album. I didn’t think about all the press, magazines and radio stations you have to talk to. I’m only home one day a week.”

The traveling has prevented him from watching any current episodes of “American Idol,” so he doesn’t have any favorites among this season’s finalists. However, he is keeping up with some of his fellow contestants from last season. He talks often by phone with Chris Daughtry and visits whenever possible with Kellie Pickler, who also lives in the Nashville area.

An “Ugly” week in ratings for old, new favorites

Last week was a tough one for the broadcast networks, with several big-time shows such as ABC’s “Ugly Betty” and Fox’s “American Idol” hitting season or series lows.

According to Nielsen Media Research data for the period ended April 22, “Ugly Betty” posted its lowest number ever in the coveted adults 18-49 demographic, as did CBS’ “Shark,” NBC’s “My Name Is Earl,” and three Fox shows: “The War at Home,” “King of the Hill” and “The Simpsons.” ABC’s “Desperate Housewives” tied its record low set on Easter Sunday.

CBS’ “CSI: Miami,” Fox’s “24″ and Tuesday’s edition of “American Idol” fell to season lows.

Fox ended up winning the week in viewers and 18-49……

    We won’t get fooled again?

    From http://www.tvsquad.com/2007/04/24/will-fox-profit-from-idol-gives-back-telecast/

“…Idol reportedly nabs as much as $700,000 per 30 second spot from its top sponsors. During last year’s finale, it pulled in $1.3 million per spot. In comparison, Bones pulls in below average rates around $115,000 per 30 second spot. As you can see, by bumping Bones for the evening and offering two-hours of star-studded Idol entertainment, FOX is able to rake in a lot more advertising bucks. We’re talking millions of dollars here. At $700,000 a pop, they only have to run 10 commercials and they make $7 million. Run 20 commercials, and they’re making $14 million. Even in 2005, Idol’s two-hour finale brought in over $40 million in TV advertising. With that in mind, News Corp’s $5 million doesn’t seem all that generous, does it?…”

With thanks to MommyErma from VFTW.

Last Tuesday was Idol’s lowest rated show of the year but the Wed. nite show got much better ratings. Those are the ones who wanted to see if Sanjaya was voted off. After IGB, I expect next Tuesday’s show to be the lowest rated of the season. I just don’t think Melinda and Phil rocking out will bring in the folks.
Sorry guys but Idol Gives Back isn’t doing it for me. They’ll make more $ on the commercials than they’ll make for charity. Hey Fox, how about no Commercials when you do a charity event. Blech. Keeping my fingers crossed that Leona Lewis – biggest thing since sliced bread – is a hugh bomb. The Philly guy is now my favorite idol watcher of the Season.

No, which also explains why they periodically have 1 hour elimination shows.

    Beatboxing didn’t need ‘Idol’ help

    The beat goes on.

In showers, in classrooms, at the dinner table and on American Idol, beatboxing is in the air.

The art of making vocal percussion — popular in jazz and rap circles for years — has entered the limelight, courtesy of Idol contestant Blake Lewis of Bothell, Wash.

“It’s really good for breaking the ice when you first meet people because they’re like ‘Oh, you can beatbox? That’s sweet,’ ” said Adam Schwager, a senior at Bexley High School who creates the sounds while brushing his teeth.

Beatboxing, according to high-school students in central Ohio, is heard in hallways and locker rooms, and on team buses…..

Songs of inspiration from the Top Six

Tuesday night’s American Idol is glutted with infomercials, nods to the show’s benevolent corporate sponsors and unnerving footage of Simon acting caring, but as the start of the Idol Gives Back event, I’m inclined to just let it be.

For the past few weeks, American Idol has been averaging between 30 and 40 million, but how great would it be to see this week’s show pull in 50 million votes or more to make Rupert Murdoch shell out that whole $5 million he’s offering?

Vote early and often based on these performances:

Morning all! Today begins the dreaded Reading Period before finals….arrghh…and to make matters worse they’ve cut it short, from 10 days to six. Eek! Oh well. :-)

I have to agree with parts of that Columbus Dispatch review re: Taylor. Sometimes his subtlety gets lost in concert. I know it kind of did when I went to see him. For those of us who are fans of his ballads such as “Georgia” and “The Right Place,” and most importantly “Hell of a Day” (IMO), we know darn well he can be subtle and convey all sorts of emotion, but it’s frustrating when it doesn’t come through in concert. Ahh well.

So last night was pretty meh for me. I got home late and was able to FF through all the boring junk, which was nice. :-) Chris Richardson really needs to cool it with the meth jitters, but he did sound okay–better than he usually does. Melinda was great, but still not earthshattering. Blake was boring, and it was a poor song choice, because there’s just not a whole lot you can DO with a song like that, by means of “making it your own,” without just completely ruining the song. And IMO his voice isn’t interesting or strong enough to win praise for just sitting there and singing. Lakisha was screamy and was off for the first half of the song. Phil was good, again, though I thought he was off in the beginning, too. And Jordin? Good, I guess. A little strident in her high notes, and not the masterpiece the judges made it out to be, but still good. Her voice reminds me of McPhee’s though in that it just seems to be lacking some element. Oh, she connects to the music far better than Kat ever did, but their voices are just…empty? Tinny? It’s probably just my personal taste.

Theyà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ll make more $ on the commercials than theyà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ll make for charity. Hey Fox, how about no Commercials when you do a charity event. Blech

Better yet, donate ALL of the ad money from Wednesday to the charity. That would impress me (or at least the difference between what they normally make on a boot night and what they will make that night with the added hour and all the stars).

And please, tell us what Ford, Coke and AT&T are doing for the charity to get mentioned every 10 minutes on the show. And what did that Food company they mentioned before the Second Harvest segment do? It said something about it being sponsored by them? Did they pick up the cost of having a limo drive Simon down to the food bank? Did they pay ad time for the 3 minutes the segment ran? Did they give the food bank some food? I really would like to know so I can congratulate them too.

I think Lakisha needs to work on pronouncing her words more clearly when she sings. She seems to slur through them sometimes and it’s distracting. Oh yeah, she yells too much too. But so does Jordin. I think only Melinda can hit the big notes without you feeling like a truck just slammed into you. She can really finesse a note. And her phrasing, etc. is so far ahead of all the others.

However I feel none of the excitement and anticipation of last year. I don’t really care who goes home. Team Indifference lives on.

Bob Dylan to head Freedom Hill lineup

Bob Dylan will lead the summer season at a rejuvenated Freedom Hill amphitheater, officials told the Free Press on Tuesday.

The rock legend is scheduled to perform July 11 in what Freedom Hill executives describe as a rebirth year for the Sterling Heights venue.

Other prominent acts on the summer roster, which will ultimately feature about 25 shows, include classic-rock duo Steely Dan (June 4), pop crooner Clay Aiken (July 23) and British alt-rock band Snow Patrol (Aug. 6). The season at the 7,000-capacity amphitheater is set to kick off with a May 20 bill featuring modern rockers Three Days Grace, Breaking Benjamin and Puddle of Mudd….

Finalists Get Inspirational For ‘Idol Gives Back’

  • Little Boy Blue

As a Taylor hicks fan, I fully agree with this observation from the review by the Columbus Dispatch :

    ——————————

Eventually, even Hicks’ insistent energy grew wearing. Maybe American Idol should take some of the blame: Teach singers that they only have a song or two in which to sell themselves, and they won’t ever learn that less is sometimes more. In any case, Hicks hasn’t yet discovered how to shape a concert. He barely paused long enough to take a breath, and each song was as intense as the one before.
    ——————————

Taylor has got to learn to PACE his catalog of songs more. Sometimes there is a need to slow down, not continue to jam and jam until the audience goes weary. There is a noticeable dearth of “quiet-things-down” songs in the mould of THE FALL or THE RIGHT PLACE in his set list.

I would have wanted his encore to be a more toned down song like the one he presented in B’ham — MY HOME’s IN ALABAMA. Instead, we’re often treated to louder and more high energy music as if 90% of what he presented aren’t songs of that type.

    Just being constructive here folks.

Serious Rad? Is that right?? Will I have to actually sit through a Jordan/Phil finale?

You can go to dialidol.com and check for yourself. But it’s right. That doesn’t mean that’s what the voting outcome is, that just means people who use dial idol, that’s who they voted for.
I’m surprised Melinda is so low though. I hope Chris leaves tonight. Then Phil next week, then Lakisha, then the top 3 i think would be the best and right top 3

Anyone else think Jordan was WAY overpraised last night?

I think if the judges heard the recording back, they’d think differently. She was just more shaky than usual. Not as controlled. Vibrato was all over and her tone on the final notes was not good.

  • radname

Rosie O’Donnell is only signed on for one year in her contract, so in early May we’ll see if she’s back for another season or not. She should get her own show again, but I like her on the view because i like seeing her fight with Elizabeth

Hey! How à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢bout those Season Six Idols? *AHEM*

Here is a picture of Sanjaya that made People’s Star Trak for this week. Sanjaya seems to be their new poster boy. That’s three articles (and a cover) mentioning him this week. Any bets on if he will make the Hottest Bachelor list this year? (I don’t think People will declare any Idol this year The Hottest Bachelor just because they wouldn’t want to pick an Idol two years in a row…and no, we don’t need to debate whether they should have picked last year’s winner…that debate is so last year):

Hey! How à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢bout those Season Six Idols? *AHEM*

Yea, how ’bout ‘em? On that subject, I am surprised by those dial idol results and I do not believe they can possibly be correct.

I know a lot of people want to see a Blake/Jordin finale, but I would prefer it be Blake and someone else. While I like Jordin, she’s not one of my favorites and not the one I’m rooting for to win. Although it’s painfully obvious that the show itself would like to see her win.

I prefer both Lakisha and Melinda over Jordin, even though I know that is a minority opinion. What suprises me about this season, is that my preferances keep changing over time. While I’m all about Team Plaid, and that hasn’t changed – my feelings about the others are pretty fluid.

I spent most of the season making fun of Phil, but for the last 3 weeks, he has really impressed me. Although I prefer Blake to him, on a purely vocal basis I can see how others would find Phil to be more to their liking.

I’ve made no secret that I find Chris to be adorable, but I’m not a fan of his singing and I haven’t voted for him. I believe it’s right about time for him to go – although I have no idea if he’ll be the one really going. On a sidenote – I do not know what magic technology they use to clean up the vocals on those MP3′s, but it’s pretty impressive. Chris’s recordings are light year’s better than his live singing.

I’ve downloaded several MP3′s from this year’s contestants and I was really surprised by how much I liked Phil’s and Lakisha’s and by how much I was bored by Melinda’s and Jordin’s. I thought that I would feel just the opposite. Of course, I find Blake’s to be wonderful but I don’t think I’m objective on that subject anymore.

  • Lisa B

Concert etiquette, it’s not just for the weak
A plea for a more pleasant musical experience

I haven’t been to a concert in awhile.

I don’t have a lot of time to go to concerts, but when I finally get my hands on a pair of tickets to a show I get giddy like a little kid…..

……I was unlucky enough to stand next to Little Miss American Idol during the entire show. As though she were trying out for America’s favorite reality contest, this genius had figured that everyone at the concert had paid to hear her sing. I understand that a part of the concert-going experience is singing along to your favorite songs or my tolerating general crowd annoyances during the show, but this person had decided to take singing to the extreme. Singing louder than most would believe possible, this woman tried sing along to every song, whether she knew the words or not. I did not think she was drunk, and that made it worse. Had she been drunk, at least she could have blamed her vocal performance on the overpriced booze. Not only was her singing annoying, but for some reason, she felt entitled to push through half the crowd to get closer to the stage, as though she were the heir to Row One, Center Spot.

After Singing Girl had finally been jostled out of ear-shot, I was accosted by a girl I’ll refer to as Uterus. About half-way through the show, Uterus tapped me on the shoulder…….

In other news….Sanjaya is still the news (as Lisa B mentioned earlier).

Since yesterday, 6,891 articles have appeared that mention Sanjaya according to the Google news search. The other idols get less than 2000 mentions. Idol itself did manage over 16,000 mentions. In comparison, Haley got 1600 mentions during the same 24 hour period last week.

How long will Sanjaya’s shadow be on this season? When the Idol is crowned, will his performance on Finale night get as many mentions?

Since I am on the west coast and come to see the show later, I saw remarks about the idols beforehand. Jordin was indeed sharp throughout the song. Sharp usually means nerves. I think she was overpraised. I am indifferent also though, but it turns out that I am becoming indifferent to TV as a whole. I just can’t get excited about anything on it and probably because all the shows are cut up into bite sizes and no full seasons anymore.

  • bean99

I think Randy is listening to Jordin through rose colored glasses, lol. I think they’d be better to temper their praise of her a little if they really want her to be in the finals. It’s just annoying to me and I like her.

For Blake’s sake it would be probably be better if Chris were to leave tonight but can’t help but hope it will be Phil instead. Zabasearch is predicting that Phil will leave but am not sure how accurate they are since they’re just getting into it again.

    Jordin Sparks – 25.54
    Phil Stacey – 21.39
    Blake Lewis – 20.86
    Lakisha Jones – 20.55
    Melinda Doolittle – 20.49
    Chris Richardson – 18.75

Wow, those numbers are scary. I thought Jordin was horrid last night. Melinda to me was good but not as good as the judges said she was. And she was boring. That said, I am suprised to see her than low. Actually, the difference between her, Lakisha and Blake is so small that the addition of text message votes may alter that order a bit. But I do hope Chris Richardson finally goes home. It’s time.

  • skylight1219

It’s quite obvious they want Jordin to win. If you’ll go back and watch last night’s show, when she was done singing, you can see Nigel in the audience doing a bow down to her, about 3 times I think. And, remember Randy saying from the beginning of the season that someone with curly hair was going to win this season? And, I just don’t get the hyperpraise for her performance last night. I listened to it twice, and, it didn’t inspire me at all. She started off very shaky, and, if they are going to call Lakisha for screaming, then, that goes ditto for Jordin. She screamed on the high notes. But, since when was Idol truly ever fair? They want Lakisha out of the running, same as they did Jennifer Hudson during season 3. I wonder how many different recipes they can find for crow?

  • pj

Yes, Jordin is obviously the pimped one.

I don’t think Dial Idol is very useful this year, but that’s just me.

  • Little Boy Blue

Let’s be honest folks — who among this bunch of season 6 finalists will you go see in concert ? I mean a SOLO concert like the sold-out ones Taylor Hicks has been doing night after night ?

The only one remotely interesting is Blake Lewis.

And maybe if Chris Richardson joins a boy band and learns some choreography ( from Kevin Federline ?) he might be worth watching as well.

I’m not sure if the rest of them are worth the concert money yet ( and that goes for the favorites Melinda and Jordin ).

  • emeralgem

So are Melinda and LaKisha both in the bottom three?

  • Little Boy Blue

I donà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t think Dial Idol is very useful this year, but thatà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s just me.

DialIdol gets to be more and more accurate as the number of contestants dwindle. They were close to spot on last week.

  • JJ

Think about why they are pimping Jordin.

    1. She is not a horrible singer;
    2. She is 17 years old, therefore, she can get the young crowd;
    3. She tries different types of music, so she has the potential to draw in other people than the teens;
    4. She is somewhat cute;
    5. She is an ex-NFL’ers daughter, which even though her father sucked, is an interesting side. It could garner some fans from that.
    6. As a 17 year old, the chances of her beign difficult, and saying she dosen’t want to do something are probably slim;
    7. Being 17, she can be molded to what they want her to be.

  • Metta

    8. She has no edge – She is the definition of family friendly.

    What’s going on peeps?

  • emeralgem

Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢m not sure if the rest of them are worth the concert money yet ( and that goes for the favorites Melinda and Jordin ).

JJ, my sentiments exactly. After having to deal with Taylor last season, they want someone more pliable, who they can lead around by the nose. I posted this many weeks ago, that Jordin will be the winner.

  • tinawina

I actually would totally pay to see Melinda in concert. Maybe it’s just me. Though I do agree Blake is an interesting performer.

  • Metta

skylight – Yes. Jordin will be more pliable than Melinda. I think it’s clear that Melinda is not so timid as she first appeared. Good for her. But that makes her less desirable to TPTB.

  • JJ

I think ità ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s clear that Melinda is not so timid as she first appeared.

Which goes back to what I have been saying for some time, Melinda is all an act. Just like Kellie Pickler was an act last year, so is Melinda. Also, being older, she is most likely to be less pliable.

Someone said this a few days ago, when they said they didn’t want any Taylor Hicks or Chris Daughtry’s this year, they didn’t mean they didn’t want any blue-eyed soul singers or rockers. They didn’t want people that were going to give them shit.

LBB -The only people I would go see in concert is Chris, Jordin, Blake.

  • http://www.idolicious.com Kat

I’d pay money to see Melinda in concert. Honestly, Blake is one of the ones I couldn’t give a rat’s a$$ about. I know he’s very popular here, but I don’t get his appeal, and I certainly don’t want to pay good money to watch someone sing every song with the same blank expression on their face. I thought Simon was pretty right on in his criticism of Blake last night. I appreciate that he didn’t screw up the song with a lot of vocal runs, but it was too flat-line. It just might not have been a wise song choice and I wouldn’t be surprised to see him in the bottom again.

  • JJ

The only people, from any idol season, I would pay to see in concert are Bo, Taylor and Kellie. The only reason I would pay to see Kellie is my daughter loves her. So, correlation, the only people I would pay to see in concert are the ones I voted for.

Melinda/Jordin are good singers but both bore me. Blake’s voice would be hard to recognized on the radio. I wouldn’t pay money to see any of them. I used to like Jordin but she’s reminding me more and more of Kat. She’s a better singer but it’s still beauty pagent stuff to me. Wow I had no idea Kiki was so high on Dialidol. Dear hubby, the music critic, elaborated on his Taylor concert experience. He said he would like him to do more non-obscure, slower tempo covers to compare. He said he feels that is a true way to gauge someones musical ability. He suggested Madman Across the Water or Goodbye Yellow Brick Road, which are actully songs I hoped Taylor would do. He also said that Taylors original stuff is up-tempo and good. Trust me, big compliment.

When they had Jordin sing that song the way she did and praised her to high heavens. AI has decided to get contestants who they can control this year. None of those contestants appear to have any real guts to stand up the TPTB no matter how much AI wants to convince you that they do. Everything about that show is an illusion.

The only Idol I have paid to see more than once is Clay. And he delivers.
I think I’d enjoy seeing Bo, Elliott, and Taylor in a small venue.
Saw Kelly on the Independendent Tour with Clay; she was OK, but that was at the start of her touring career, and I would think she has developed better stage presence since then. I wouldn’t go to a concert of her’s alone because I think the arena would be full of teens – 20′s – not my choice to spend an evening with.

JJ, I believe you. Taylor has truly moved up in your husband’s eyes.

I would not spend money to see this season’s crew. Outside of Season Five, Season Four was the only other season I would have considered wasting my money to see the contestants perform.

As individuals, only Taylor, Fantasia and maybe, Bo I would see in concert.

  • pj

Well, so far I’ve paid to see concerts of Ace, Taylor and Bucky. I would have seen Daughtry, but it sold out too quickly and the scalping price was too high. Taylor sold out quickly too, but I got them pretty much at face value thanks to OhSo’s connections.

I would definately pay to see Blake. Not sure about the rest. I suppose it depends on what kind of record they put out. If it’s belting ballads, count me out.

Star reported at Team Plaid that Uncle Nigel was on Ryan’s radio show this morning reporting 65 million votes by 10pm pacific time. Wow. Just wow.

“When the Stars Go Blue” is still charting on the iTunes top 100. None of the songs the others sang on country night are charting anymore (many never did). Go Blake!

He is amazing live!! I wouldn’t mind seeing Clay.
Thought about seeing Daughtry, but changed my mind—I’m glad I did, the reviews of his concert here were horrible.
I REALLY liked him on idol, but don’t like his cd at all.
I’m glad someone burned one for me, because I wouldn’t want to waste money on it.
This year—wouldn’t see any or them—they’re just all boring to me.
And Jordin will probably win if AI has their way—she can be molded into anything they want—as someone else said.

Spense, Bucky was a load of fun. :) The only downside was all the smoke in the venue. They are gradually phasing that out here, though.

Now that you mention it, I seem to recall something about Chris R playing guitar.

  • http://www.idolicious.com Kat

Chris R. does play guitar–there’s a video floating around where he plays a guitar and sings an original composition.

  • radname

I think Chris R plays guitar and probably a little piano. I’m trying to pick a new instrument to learn how to play, i might go with piano, i know a few chords and songs but i want to play me some bach

  • http://www.idolicious.com Kat

Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢m trying to pick a new instrument to learn how to play, i might go with piano

I’ve always wanted to learn to play the piano. If I sit down and study the notes and learn them one note and chord at a time, I can learn a song in a few days. But I can’t read music…fluently, I guess is the right word. I do sing, though, which is good because unlike playing an instrument, it’s less expensive :-)

Chris R. does play guitarà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’thereà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s a video floating around where he plays a guitar and sings an original composition.

So that’s probably what I saw then. I noticed in Sligh’s blog that he has complimented Chris R’s songwriting more than once. Perhaps in the future – Richardson will spare you all his nasally voice and just write good songs for other artists?

I must stay that I’ve read Sligh’s blog a few times now. While I often have the urge to tell him to quit saying “I mean” at the beginning of every sentence, I absolutely LOVE that he is so supportive of his fellow contestants. I may not necessarily agree with all of his comments about their vocal prowess, but I really appreciate the fact that he sticks up for them.

I would really love to see Blake Lewis in concert. That would be awesome!

I think he has the atar zappeal and stage presence needed to become a BIG STAR! I am all for him.
After watching his Time of THe Season and I Need To Know performances I ma convinced he has the chops to be very successful.
His voice also sounds great recorded. Very sexy and smooth.
    I can’t stop listenint to his mp3′s.

Maybe he won’t win, we all know Jordin will but Blake will have a great recording career nevertheless.

Letà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s be honest folks à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’ who among this bunch of season 6 finalists will you go see in concert ? I mean a SOLO concert …

Only one that I could see myself possibly wanting to see in a solo concert from season six at the moment at least is Melinda.

  • Kirsten

I donà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t think any of them will leave tonight, theyà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ll roll over the votes until next week and get rid of two.

They’ve done that once before. When Corey Clark got disqualified in Season 2 (he had a court date the same day as a performance date), they told us who the two bottom vote getters were and that they would roll over the votes.

Of course, the bottom two’s fans voted like fiends and they were saved the next week (they didn’t even hit the seal).

Okay, so the “Sevilla Five” (my friends and I who travelled to Sevilla, Spain together this summer) have planned our next movie night. We scheduled it for the Sunday after finals. The verdict was split on which movies to screen, so we’re holding a double showing. Again, I’ll need help planning the menu. We’re calling it “A Night of Kal Penn and Kal-El,” and we’ll be screening “Superman Returns” and “Harold and Kumar Go To White Castle.”

Obviously we can do the little frozen White Castle burgers. I figure I’d also make some “hash” brownies (with fresh mint) and some kind of “Kryptonite” cocktail (probably with creme de menthe). Any other suggestions?

Honestly? This year I don’t even care if I miss the AI tour. I think the ticket sales will be down this year. Some of these guys have OK to good recording voices but performing a live solo concert is a whole other thing. It isn’t as easy as just showing up to sing a song.

Especially given Taylor’s and Fantasia’s schedules right now, I doubt it’d be possible, but how I hoped that AI would bring back its five winners to sing tonight. Y’know, because this show used to be about the people who actually competed and/or won, and not the showcase for the TRL Artist Du Jour/Artist of Yesteryear with New CD to Promote that it’s become.

Speaking of which, here’s a dumb quesion: are all the guest judges/mentors/whathaveyou signed with Sony/BMG and its various offshoots? Or are stragglers from EMI, UMG, and Warner allowed to grace the Idol stage?

    //DialIdol for last night:
    Jordin Sparks – 25.54
    Phil Stacey – 21.39
    Blake Lewis – 20.86
    Lakisha Jones – 20.55
    Melinda Doolittle – 20.49
    Chris Richardson – 18.75//
That breakdown would be perfect for the 2 by 2 by 2 division, as Idol did last year.

    Jordin/Phil
    Blake/Lakisha
    Melinda/Chris

  • jersey

That’s an interesting question about other label artists being “allowed” to participate, Kat. I don’t know the answer.

  • JJ

It would be so freakin’ cool if Melinda went home today. Remember, there needs to be a shocking exit pretty much every year:

    Season 1 – Tamyra
Season 2 – None that I can think of
    Season 3 – Jennifer Hudson
    Season 4 – Constantine Maroulis
    Season 5 – Chris Daughtry

    Good question:

Celine Dionne – Epic (division of Sony/BMG)
Annie Lennox – J Records (division of Sony/BMG)
Kelly Clarkson – RCA (division of Sony/BMG)
Carrie Underwood – Arista (division of Sony/BMG)

    Il Divo – Sony/BMG
Gwen Stefani – Interscope (division of Universal Music Group)
Earth,Wind & Fire – Columbia (huge company in it’s own right)
Josh Groban – Reprise (division of Warner)
Rascal Flatts – Lyric Records (division of Disney)

So, most of the artists are from the Sony/BMG stable, but not all.

There’s no one this season that could get me to an AI concert this summer and certainly no “one” of them I’d care to see performing solo. I’ve watched and tried to warm up to them this season but it’s just not happening.

  • Smiley

JJ, that would definitely be equivalent shock value to those in the past.

  • tinawina

It would be so freakinà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ cool if Melinda went home today. Remember, there needs to be a shocking exit pretty much every year:

It would be cool for the drama factor, but it would also pretty much destroy whatever credibility AI had left after Sanjaya. Melinda is easily the best and most consistent singer in the competition, and the likes of Chris or Phil outlasting her would be just too ridiculous for words.

  • sexygirl

That should be very cool if true. Love Annieà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s voice.

Man, you mean I now have to watch AI tonight to hear Annie L. Man I love that lady. It will be a hard decision for me to make tonight.

JJ, none of guys leaving will be a REAL shocker..

  • JJ

Melinda is easily the best and most consistent singer in the competition

    Your opinion, not mine

  • tinawina

    Your opinion, not mine

True enough, JJ. Maybe best technical singer? She can be boring, but she’s never hit a bum note and is a singing teacher’s dream, IMO. In a “singing competition”, her ouster this early would be really bad. To me, that is.

  • Lisa B

It’s more than just a ‘singing competition’ though, personality and showmanship plays a large part.

  • Tony

LOL! Sanjaya left, and took viewers with him.

After all of the “buzz” about the Idol Gives Back extravaganza, last night’s show was DOWN in ratings compared to last week’s performance show. Preliminary estimates have last night’s show at 25.7 million (last week’s performance show (Top 7) had 25.9 million, and last year’s top 6 peformance show had 28.6 million).

And no, I didn’t watch either.

  • day-tripper

While not my favorite, I have to say that Melinda does sing on-key, every time.

  • madaboutu

LisaB………..isn’t it great that everyone can finally say that openly? Now to get AI to admit it!! It’s not all about the singing at all. :clap_tb:

  • Tony

My bad. Last week’s performance show had 26.5 million…not 25.9 million

  • JJ

    Maybe best technical singer?

Maybe, but that is all she has IMO. I find her incredibly boring.

  • tinawina

    Ità ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s more than just a à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢singing competitionà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ though, personality and showmanship plays a large part.

Yeah, that is true, which is why I think Jordin just might beat her. But she’s too good to leave before blatantly shaky singers (other than a phenom like Sanjaya or even Jasmine Trias) or else AI’s even more of a farce than we know it already is.

  • pj

Doesn’t matter that ratings are down from last week. They’ll still brag at the number of votes received. If it was 65 million at ten pacific, it will probably be the highest ever in the history of Idol. They will pimp that.

  • JJ

Yeah, that is true, which is why I think Jordin just might beat her. But sheà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s too good to leave before blatantly shaky singers (other than a phenom like Sanjaya or even Jasmine Trias) or else AIà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s even more of a farce than we know it already is.

See, I disagree. First, American Idol is a TV show. They want to bring in as many viewers as they can. Therefore, they would like to have interesting people. Melinda may be a good technical singer, but she dosen’t draw me in. This is one of the reasons Sanjaya was so popular, he was interesting, you tuned in to see what his hair was going to be like. Having someone like Melinda leave, is a shock value and it makes it more interesting. If she leaves, more people may tune in next week, just to see what would happen.

They can sign whomever they want to a recording contract, but the show needs the most interesting people.

  • pj

I agree with JJ. Melinda leaving tonight would be brilliant TV.

  • Kirsten

Access Hollywood confirms that Madonna will be appearing tonight:

    http://www.accesshollywood.com/news/ah5031.shtml

Nigel said in a radio interview this morning that she came on board yesterday.

Pink is no longer on the list of tonight’s performers (I’ve seen rumours that she will be appearing in May now)

  • Carla D

The only AI contestants I would definitely pay to see in concert are Daughtry and Carrie (because my daughter LOVES her). I have seen both in concert and would pay to see them again as both shows were truly great. I might pay to see Ace and George Huff if they ever make it to Oklahoma. I seriously doubt I would pay to see anyone from this year’s crop.

I can’t wait to see Bono on AI tonight. I’ve paid mega $$$ to see U2 live in concert twice – and both times were AMAZING. I’ve also donated to ONE and am pleased that this organization is being mentioned on AI (I noticed some of the contestants were wearing ONE bracelets last night). Daughtry has been involved with ONE for several months now -Chris wears ONE t-shirts on stage and there have been ONE sign-up booths at his concerts. I’m also looking forward to Kelly’s performance with Jeff Beck and Annie Lennox’s performance.

  • madaboutu

JJ………..remember this from Simon? “What I like about you is, you’re interesting.” (to Taylor) He just never realized how far that would go.

  • Little Boy Blue

I hoped that AI would bring back its five winners to sing tonight.

    1) if they can ask THE COLOR PURPLE on Broadway to freeze what they do to allow a satellite transmission of Fantasia singing, maybe it’s possible.

    2) Taylor Hicks will be at the Rialto Theater in Joliet, Illinois tonight (SOLD OUT again ). It’ll be a treat to go via satellite and “interrupt” Taylor’s concert for him to sing one song from stage and ask people to donate. Hey, if I were a concert-goer on that show, I wouldn’t mind at all … as long as they allow me to take videos :)

Hey, with communications technology, it’s possible.

  • Stefunny

Brilliant TV would be Blake or Jordin leaving. Given the pimping (the same Keane song Blake covered was in the background of the food bank piece, Jordin was highly praised for a rather questionable performance) they’ve received, that would be far more shocking IMO.

I also would bet that seeing Melinda live is a far more goosebump-inducing experience that what translates on TV.

I do agree with that. Man, have they dropped the ball this year. All the people who could sing had little personality, and all the personalities had shaky voices. And the ones who seemed early on like they had both (Sligh and Sundance) choked big time. Sundance on voice, Sligh on personality. Sigh. What a year.

Pink is no longer on the list of tonightà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s performers (Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ve seen rumours that she will be appearing in May now)

I don’t know how you can determine if a planet is habitable or not if it’s 25 light years away (or, as the article says, 120 trillion miles) maybe instead of looking at other planets to inhabit, we should concentrate on fixing our own.

MySpace, Mark Burnett Team on Political TV

Rather than the traditional reality show in which contestants are isolated from the real world, Mark Burnett’s new show, dubbed “Independent,” will have contestants live in the public eye, interacting with supporters, protesters, activists, and others. The winner of Independent will take home $1 million, which must be used for political purposes.

…”This show will potentially be a concern to some people in the political sphere that see it as lessening the political process,” said Jennifer Simpson, an analyst at Yankee Group.

Simpson said there is the possibility of what is commonly referred to as the “Sanjaya effect,” a phenomenon in crowd-based voting that occurs when voters choose a candidate on the basis of factors other than merits. Sanjaya Malakar was a contestant on American Idol 6. He was voted off recently but showed staying power despite other contestants who were seen as more talented…..

Because they have determined that it may have water, it is about the same size as our own planet, plus I’m sure there are other attributes. We learn by exploring. As much as there are things in our own home that need fixing, not exploring and learning about other worlds will limit our knowledge base. Maybe, by learning about other worlds, we can find a way to fix what is wrong in our own.

i’m all up for exploring. But theres so much talk about making mars habitable that it makes me wonder if they’re not doing it so once we use up planet Earth we all just pick up and move on to the next planet. What is wrong with our planet is greed. Looking at other planets isn’t going to fix that. I mean I find it interesting that they’re finding new planets that share similar attributes with planet Earth, but when the first comment they make about it is that it’s habitable leaves a bad taste in my mouth. It’s almost like seeing a nice patch of grass and someone going “oh i can build my house there!”

RE: Pink. I think I read something a while back that she was on Howard Stern and bad-mouthed AI. Perhaps that is why she is not appearing? Pure speculation. I haven’t had time to research this.

Re: last night’s performance, just ’cause I have an opinion. I really didn’t like Melinda up until last week. I really enjoyed last week’s performance and this week’s. She was looking young and actually pretty. Jordin, who I loved when she did Tracey C and earlier, I was not digging. Her voice cracked, and she screamed the ending. She was a bit too much for my ears to take, although her performance skills are mighty. Didn’t like Blake. I think he would work best in a band, not a solo act. I just don’t see the personality, at least not lately. I liked him best early on, when he sang Jimeriquo (sp), but that song yesterday and the one last week kind of made me want to go and fold some socks.

Gold is based on shipments, not sales. There has been one mention I know of in a magazine saying it has gone gold, no official announcement though so they may be mistaken. If she hasn’t gone gold yet though, I would expect it within the next month or two.

‘Idol’ contender’s father talks of local ties

“American Idol” fans may have questionable musical tastes, but that doesn’t prevent the vocal majority from offering up harsh critiques on message boards and personal blogs. This phenomenon is something former Daytonian Gary Stacey knows all too well. His son, Phil, a top six finalist this season on the popular television program, has been the recipient of some hateful remarks, everything from “horrible” and “untalented” to “Nosferatu” or “Shine” because of his shaved head.

The elder Stacey, the pastor at Hendersonville Church of God in Hendersonville, Tenn., took time earlier this week to defend his son, discuss the juggernaut that is “American Idol” and reveal his family’s area ties…

How do you know that? How do you know that scientists canà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t study another similar planet and determine how to patch the ozone layer, or reverse global warming. Or maybe they can determine how to use our natural resources more wisely. There is so much to learn. The human race has made mistakes, but we can try to make this a better place, part of that is having an open mind and looking at new things as a place to learn.

They’ve already reduced the size of the hole in the ozone layer by decreasing the use of CFCs. They already have plenty of ways to reduce the effects of global warming, and to slow the use of natural resources but they choose not to. I think that might be changing as consumer demand increases for green products, the demand will out weight the cost of the product to be gin with. I don’t think looking at a planet 120 trillion miles away that may or may not be similar to where we live today is going to help us understand our planet any better.

You don’t buy 200k yourself, if each store gets say..20 or so cds that still adds up. It’s not all going to one store. I always though Katharine would be a single seller, as in selling when her singles are released, and doing well with her single sales. Not a flash in the pan type of sales.

No. You’re getting sales from radio, which means people like what they hear so they buy it. Kelly Clarkson didn’t have “awesome” first week sales, but because of the popularity of her singles she was able to sustain sales. See what i mean jellybean?

I do understand what you mean, but I think there’s a difference between someone who has steady sales that get a boost when a new single comes out, and someone who falls off the charts completely and experiences a resurgence when a single gets some radio spin. One person probably has some legs; the other is probably a fad whose time will be up when the trends change. To me, the only type of an artist who is definitively NOT a “flash in the pan” is the type of artist who can sell well and steadily, for years, regardless of the popularity of their genre.

It’s way too early to tell which kind of artist Kat will be yet.

Me too, but postponing a week and doing 2 at once seems awkward and unlikely as well. I would hope that tonight they leave the contestant business for the very end, and not drag it out or mix it up with the fundraising and related performances.

I am fascinated by the numerous, blatant attempts to mold and coach Phil Stacey — on air — into the marketable genre AI seems to need and want to fill for this season. It’s amusing that he still appears to be behind the curve on it all, especially in light of his background. Drop the wanna be A/C crooner stuff Phil. Put on your boots and hop in the truck.

One reason may be that people tend to just buy the digital track these days. Especially if it is the only song they have heard so far by that person. Kat has sold over 340k of Over It. It was still the #30 song for digital sales this week even though radio play is starting to taper off for it (it was as high as 18 3-4 weeks ago I believe). Hopefully if the next single or two are successful it will translate more into CD sales. If people have heard more than one song they like, maybe they will be more willing to pick up the whole thing. Only time will tell though.

  • NOLA

rad, you can find anything today, if you pay enough.

What if Phil doesn’t want to be a country singer?

  • Linny

A couple of trivial comments from me.

First off – I went to college with Bill Pullman. The funniest thing ever is that there was a huge percentage of girls over guys at my school. Any really hot, goodlooking guy didn’t go unnoticed. Tell me why, oh why, did I never notice Bill Pullman on campus???????????? And believe me, I looked over every guy. Where was he hiding?

Every day they are playing Kat’s song on the local station that comes in to my office. I want to vomit whenever I hear it. This is a woman with a powerful, beautiful voice – and they give her this bubblegum garbage to “sing.” I thought it was Hillary Duff the first few times until they said “McPhee.” UGH.

I remember that, but thought he was just going along with what they were prescribing for him–as opposed to it being his true passion. Otherwise, why wouldn’t he have entered the competition as a country singer?

He’s in a tough spot. If they sign him, he’ll have to go country. What if he’s okay with that initially, but then tires of it? How hard is it to switch genres–if they would even let him?

  • http://www.idolicious.com Kat

Linny, ha! I’ve always really liked him as an actor and thought he was a great leading man in While You Were Sleeping. Guess I’ve always gone for the ruggedly handsome types instead of the little girly boys :)

Phil has a nice voice but I see him as a successful Christian singer. I don’t think he has the personality/image to make it in country. He doesn’t seem “cowboy” enough. He’d also do great on Broadway (seriously)

Melinda has to pull out her inner Tina, and then some. I’ve no doubt she can, if she chooses to. C’mon baby, do it for Fred.

I think country as a genre is more marketable, for a longer period of time than Disney. However, I don’t think they’ll push Jordin to Disney-esque stuff. She’ll be the next pop stah!!!. Plus, even though country is a “better” genre, I don’t know that country Phil is the right fit. They should have kept Matt Buckstien around if they wanted a male country singer.

  • emeralgem

Do you guys think Country Phil is more marketable than Disney Jordin?

Well, he did a Garth Brooks song last night, but didn’t sound very country to me..Now I did like his rendition of Where the Black Top Ends, so who knows..Personally, I don’t see him as being a country singer..

I don’t know about Jordin..I liked her when she sang Give Me One Reason, and I also liked…I Who Have Nothing..Her other choices were just so so for me.. So I do not think her strength lies in Disney.. Does that make sense?

As for Rickys “spoilers”, they obviously have to make goodbye packages for everyone. And have everyone one of them have the recent song sung, I remember Ricky saying last year that Kats goodbye was running top 6 week.

Idol’ fundraiser hits a new season low

Â’Å¡American Idol’s first-ever Idol Gives Back fundraiser is a noble idea and may well raise millions for charity. But it apparently did not hold as much interest as the usual singing competition for Idol fans.

The reality singing show fell to its lowest Tuesday rating of the season last night, a 9.6 Nielsen overnight among adults 18-49, as the contestants and a huge array of celebrity guests appealed to viewers to pledge money for numerous American and African charities.

I hope you all enjoy this week’s performance. I’m wearing a really cool vintage dress that I hope you all like. But that’s beside the point. Once again, you have moved me forward to another week. It just blows my mind that you all invest so much time to me. I want you to all know that although I never get to see your faces, I can feel the energy of love and support . I think of you before I sing and it gives me strength. So now I send it back to you all as a THANK YOU for everything……… For the opportunity to do what I’m doing, because without you all I wouldn’t have had the chance . Thank you for believing in me. You have helped me believe in myself.

    Love you all,

    Kat

    Hey DAVE, pull out your old copy of à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Private Dancerà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ and paste Mindyà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s face on thereà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ¦.eh?

You know it RSF. Melinda is HOT.
    ——————————————-

Its funny last year(hope saying “last year” won’t get me banned :cheese1_ee:) I was so critical of everyone’s performance and wanted any and everyone voted off but my favorite idol. This year, I could give two chits who wins that I almost want it declared a 6 way tie.

    ——————————————-

Last night Randy’s comments seemed so scripted. He didn’t even seem to believe some of the stuff he was saying. Just my opinion of course.

    —————————————-

Tonight holds ZERO interest for me. DVR will be my friend. I think if Chris is voted of Melinda will be the most heartbroken. I sense a real somethin somethin between them two. But I don’t deal in rumor and innuendo.
    ————————————–

I still miss Sundance and I think he would have been great for the show this year. His personality was beginning to shine and poof he was gone.

  • emeralgem

maybe because it was so old is why it exploded while she was singing. You know, the seams were old;)

I’ve heard about this incident so so many times.. I did watch that night and remember the dress, but I never saw the incident occur.

Is there a video out there anywhere that shows the malfunction that night? I would love to see it, not to snark on ***. but just to see what everyone has been talking about for over a year now..

    Sadly, America has voted on Katà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s new single, and theyà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢re à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Over It.à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬

Not this American, I wonder where whoever wrote this article got this information, because her single has done really, really, well.

And Congrats to Kat for being in the Most Beautiful People magazine, I can’t say I’m surprised.

Way to Go Kat!!! Sing/Model/Pose/Look at your flaws in a big mirror, I know I’ve done that a zillion times.

340k on her single, 305k on her album, I am one very PROUD Kat fan. :smile2_ee:

Yes Kat is doing wonderful. Lots of downloads of her single and over 300K on her CD. I wonder how Kat’s CD is doing compared to other second place finishers at this point. What is it week 12 or week 13 of her release? Maybe Nevada or Kirsten have those numbers. I hope she is stacked well in comparison.

I also want to add that I went to the DL section at AI.com. There are a couple MP3s of Stephanie Edwards and She sounds great. I’m telling you America got it all wrong this year. She sounds very current and HOT.

If they had the DLs last year I would’ve spent untold amounts of .99s.

  • radname

Simon on ET said he’s betting on a melinda/jordin finale right now. I can’t wait for the show tonight! I just love watching/listening to music. Plus i love Ellen. (and hopefully we’ll see Chris leave, and that will just make my night better)

Here are the SoundScan sales numbers for various Idols’ debut albums at the 12-week mark:

    Clay: 2,153,709
    Carrie: 2,015,930
    Chris: 1,525,628
    Ruben: 1,481,294

  • Nanny Mcphee

I can’t seem to edit, I realize they aren’t all winners listed there, but that’s what Dave was asking about, 2nd place finishers and their #’s after 12 weeks.

Um, dave? They did have downloads for sale on the scary board for AI5, both audio and video of the performances. I bought 18 audio tracks and 8 videos, and spent a total of $35.73.

So far, I’ve bought 12 audios and 2 videos for AI6.

I believe he was asking about sales in the 12th week of idol runner-ups, not winners.

Justin Guarini’s numbers are nearly impossible to come by, but his first week’s sales were reportedly 57k and at last report, the album had sold a total of 142,462 copies. Did he sell that in 12 weeks? No one knows.

Clay’s numbers at the 12-week mark were 2,153,709.

Diana DeGarmo’s numbers are also difficult to locate, but her first week’s sales were 47k and at the 8 week mark, Billboard reported her sales at 125,000. At last report — on May 16, 2006 — the album had sold 164,000 copies.

Bo Bice’s sales at the 12-week mark were 553,267 according to SoundScan.

    SO:

    Clay: 2,153,709
    Bo: 553,267
    Katharine: 305,478
    Diana: between 125,000 & 164,000
    Justin: between 57,000 & 142,462

And for the record, they aren’t “random idols.” They are Idols who have managed to hang in on the sales charts long enough to have sales totals for 12 weeks.

    I’m not a short order cook…

Sorry, I didn’t mean to offend you, it’s just that Dave was asking about second place finishers so he could see where Kat placed, at least that’s what I got out of his post.

    Again I apologize.

    Vacuous, vacant, vapid**

Today’s *** post brought to you by the letter V.

  • jpfan

Kat is third for 2nd place finishers and 5th for all non winners so far as Chris and Kellie Pickler have sold more CDs. Let’s see how Bucky and Elliott fare by the time they hit week 12 also. The only idol non winners she’s done better then are Justin and Diana.

  • Boulder Soul

Gee, maybe *** will move up a list and come in first place if the criteria for numbers is something like “what are the sales for all second place AI contestants whose initials are KM?

    On to current events:

Idol is SO getting an emmy this year.

  • radname

Congrats on Idol, they showed a touch of class tonight, although i was upset what they did to my girl Jordin

  • amys

Well, they had to give the illusion of “SHOCKER ELIMINATION” for a the last few seconds. In order to do that, they’d have to pair up Chris with either Melinda or Jordin, especially since Simon has now predicted those two to be in the finale.

  • Tony

    Wow…so no one got eliminated?

I’d hate to be a person that text messaged. Basically, Cingular just got some free money.

  • radname

They’re combining the votes from this week and next week. As the wise Lisa B correctly predicted.

  • jpfan

A wet fart in a hot car would be better than the mess called Idol Gives Back. Blech.

  • t2

Oh yeah, I remember the last time they combined votes Caldwell and Trenyce were incredibly bad for two weeks and they sent home lovely voiced Rickey.

Oh yeah, that’s incredibly fair…except not.

And just when I thought they couldn’t find any additional way to pimp Jordin they come up with this one and her little sad tears. Bleach…

Golly! I hate those damn TPTB!

Chri R should have packed his bags by now, I am now thinking they want to savotage Blake by keeping Chris R in.

I’m amazed that Kellie is outselling Kat. Seems like poetic justice for the snarky remark she made about her bff. Kellie sure was a good sport to not hold that against her. I have a whole new appreciation for Kellie’s post idol career. She seemed scripted on the show, but off the show, she is hilarious.
