It’s not where the show is at that matters–it’s where it’s going. I don’t think it’s reversible.

  • elliegrll

Nicki is probably the reason why the minimum age of the viewers has gone down for the first time in the show’s history. She could also be responsible for the increase that the show saw in 18-34 year old viewers earlier in the season.

The problem is that the producers didn’t do anything to lure in more younger viewers. We have the same songs being performed in the same way, and contestants who have no clue about injecting personality and energy into their performances.

  • sweetmusic

Even so, there’s a remarkable lack of intelligence or wit or personality on display. The panel seems lethargic, as bored as we are.

  • elliegrll

This is just not a group of good reality show contestants. I think that they are similar to the people from season 9, there are some good singers and artists, some may do well post show, but they prove the fact that AI is a television show, and not just about good singing. They can sing well, but that doesn’t mean that people will want to devote three hours a week to watching them. Like any tv show AI needs people with interesting personalities. This is something that critics of AI have bashed for years, and fans have always said that the show should focus more on the singing, but the truth is this format relies on having the right mix of personalities, and not just having contestants who sound nice.

  • sweetmusic

Not at all. And neither will I miss this year’s high-priced panel when they’re given the boot. What the show needs is bite, sizzle, sparks of intelligence.

  • elliegrll

Interest in the show has gone down for years. This isn’t the first year that we’ve seen that AI isn’t the pop culture institution that it once was. I think that this season is being hurt by the previous seasons (meaning the lack of diversity among the last five winners, and horrible song choices) just as much as it is being hurt by a poor cast.

  • Larc

I think new judges can bring in new viewers, but they can’t keep them there. Bottom line is new viewers really matter only if they stick around.

  • fuzzywuzzy

I think that the “median” age of viewers has gone down 3 years this season, which is a pretty significant drop.

  • elliegrll

This morning Rodney Ho wrote that it is 4 years.

  • elliegrll

Of course. That’s what I meant by the producers not doing anything to appeal to younger viewers. They really didn’t cast people who will appeal to a younger audience, maybe Shubha, Jett(?), and a few others could have. They are sabotaging Amber like they did with Jessica. And we have the same boring songs with the same cheesy arrangements.

  • sweetmusic

Ironically, I think AI is losing its most loyal fans–those of us who WANT to like the show but are bored stiff watching it. If the show can’t hold OUR interest, how can it attract newcomers?

  • jpfan2

This season is going to be deadly with such boring contestants. Looks like a repeat of S9. I wish they could switch things up among the judges because the chemistry is deadly. All I can think of to change it up is to bring in really exciting mentors. Not that will jazz up the contestants but just to bring in some energy. And I suggest as many hot guy mentors as possible!

  • fuzzywuzzy

Even better, but I posted to mainly correct that you had written “minimum” age rather than “median” age. I think that it is 4 years, since last year the median age was 50. That would fit with the 46 that has been published.

  • elliegrll

This season could use some more interesting male contestants, but I think that that can be said about the last few seasons, and some of the earlier seasons. This season could also use some more interesting female contestants.

  • Miz

Tonight they will be up against new episodes of popular shows. I expect a bigger drop.

  • Miz

There are 5 males in the top 10 and 2 male judges plus Ryan. The show isn’t lacking testosterone. Just interesting and compelling singers with personality.

    Joe Adalian @TVMoJoe
Last night’s DUCK DYNASTY eps averaged 3.6 A18-49– more than PSYCH, AMERICANS, SOUTHLAND, WORKAHOLICS…combined

  • http://www.facebook.com/jenny.williams.391 Jenny Williams

that’s probably because they are. If i was forced to judge such a dull set of contestants, I’d be bored too

  • http://profile.yahoo.com/TP6FDKZWZZOESHA5DCZVTU24T4 JasonG

Idol was adjusted up two tenth to a 3.8 according to tvbythenumbers.com and 13.44 million viewers total. Not too bad.

  • elliegrll

So, in the end the 18-49 rating was the same as last Wednesday”s. That’s actually good considering that in the past American Idol has seen a big drop the first Wednesday of DST.

The downside is that this group managed to hold on to the audience, but rewarded viewers with a very boring show.

  • sweetmusic

I disagree. The whole business of wgwg hurting the show is the coverup producers use to hide their own failure to revitalize the show. Sure they’re making changes–but not the right ones.
