    Some Doubt
On Gwen Stefani night on ”American Idol,” several performers are good or bad enough to make us question the conventional-wisdom rankings

…Sure, with her shoulder-length red-streaked locks, that patterned kimono-top dress, and those knee-high black boots, LaKisha finally looked the part tonight. But I just can’t shake the fear that she has very little musical imagination, that she’ll never be comfortable covering a song by anyone other than an iconic black female vocalist. And even worse, that compared to said vocalists à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’ who thus far include Jennifer Holliday, Gladys Knight, Whitney Houston, Shirley Bassey, and Ms. Summer à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’ LaKisha is merely presenting a Xerox, and her cartridge is running low on ink. Oh, what I wouldn’t have given for Kiki to surprise me by choosing the Pretenders’ ”Middle of the Road” or Lauper’s ”I Drove All Night” or even the Police’s ”Don’t Stand So Close to Me.”…

Hee! Okay, had to get that in. Carry on.

I actually had my son’s concert so I haven’t had a chance to watch last night’s show yet. I’m looking forward to it – and wondering what in world Sanjaya’s hair must have looked like to cause such comments. Hmm…

American Idol: The Sanjaya Show Continues

…Our biggest pet peeve with tonightà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s show was that the producers didnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t fill up the entire hour with more camera angles of Sanjaya Malakarà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s hair. Picture this, if you will — his long locks were put up in seven ponytails to create a massive fauxhawk. It was incredible. And much better than his rendition of No Doubtà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Bathwater.à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ (LAist understands that he has a HUGE fanbase, but the guy was seriously out of tune. Guys, do you really, really believe he has a better voice than Melinda or LaKisha? Or is it his sex appeal that draws you in?)…

Views of the weird on ‘Idol’

TV/MUSIC REVIEW: Boring routines, bad clothes abound

The American Idol judges have an announcement: Let it be known throughout the land that Blake Lewis is Extremely Hip.

Apparently, that’s all that matters. He can make a Cure song boring and sleepy; he can gaze at the camera with that yawning-mouth expression for the umpteenth time; he can wear a jacket with diagonal zippers that hasn’t seen daylight since 1983. Despite it all, as Paula Abdul told him Tuesday night, “You’re making this whole competition hip and cool and contemporary.”

Does anybody else think this emperor of cutting-edge has no clothes?

But Blake wasn’t the worst of the night, of course. Duh. For that, we go to the guy who introduced America to the horror that is the ponyhawk. From the side, Sanjaya Malakar’s seven floppy ponytails flowed downward in a neat row. But from the front, he was Pebbles Flintstone…

    à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‹Idolà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ Chatter: Sanjaya Malakar, the à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‹hairà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ apparent

    Ità ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s Week 6 of Sanjayagate on à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“American Idol,à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ and, well, letà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s just say Sanjaya Malakar certainly didnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t disappoint with Tuesdayà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s, um, performance.
After I composed myself from nearly uncontrollable fits of giggling at his Marvin the Martian hairstyle and generally uninspired, hilariously weak performance of à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Bathwater,à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ I realized heà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s just mocking us now. Seriously. He knows heà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s become a national joke and heà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s throwing it back in our faces.
à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Look America! Look how completely ridiculous and talentless I can be yet still survive week after week! I have the power! You must vote for me! One of us! One of us!à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ …

Reality Check: Hair-Raising Performances on ‘American Idol’

Before we get down to discussing the singing, let’s focus on what “Idol” viewers really want to know: What could Sanjaya have possibly been thinking?

This question isn’t directed to his choice of song or use of his vocal cords, for a change, but rather at that seven-ponytailed fauxhawk he sported that made his previous insane hairstyles à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’ ironed straight and curly, respectively à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’ seem comparatively flattering.

Let me just say that the boy has clearly become some sort of hairdresser’s plaything. Someone should take pity on him and leave his follicles alone…

‘American Idol’ contestant Malakar’s star hangs on public support, and that great hair

Flowing hair and a precious smile have their rewards.

Especially if you’re Sanjaya Malakar, who is considered to be one of the weakest performers on “American Idol” but has a fan base that has helped him survive multiple rounds of viewer elimination.

    IDOL’S MANE MAN

We want to run our collective fingers through the versatile tresses of “American Idol” hair god Sanjaya Malakar. One night they’re fluffy; the next, flat. One night, spiral curls; the next, pin-straight. We couldn’t really focus on last week’s mediocre rendition of “You Really Got Me” for dreaming of the hair, the beautiful, beautiful hair.

We can’t get our hands on those gorgeous locks, but at least we can fool around — and you can, too. Give him the swirl of tonight’s “Idol” guest, Gwen Stefani. Or the blond pigtails of his biggest fan, 13-year-old Ashley Ferl, who wept for him last week as if he were a Beatle.

    Week 3: The official summary

And here’s what took me so long to compose:

Letà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s get it out of the way up front: the much-vilified Sanjaya Malakar stole the show on American Idol Tuesday. Not by superior singing (he was better than usual but hopelessly outclassed by his rivals), but by setting new standards for hair-raising adventure by sporting an astonishing fauxhawk (see photo elsewhere on the site, I hope). Perhaps he was auditioning for a modernized Disney Channel revival of Davy Crockett in which the title character doesnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t bother with a cap, instead affixing the raccoon tail directly to his natural hair…

    Sanjayamania Part ‘Do
It’s the mashup from hell: “American Idol” and “Grease: You’re the One That I Want” officially hooked up tonight with Sanjaya Malakar’s faux-hawk. Why didn’t he just sing “Beauty School Drop-out?” It’s clearly what he’s angling for.

Idolator sez guest coach Gwen Stefani was horrified that Sanjie wanted to sing a No Doubt song. At least he didn’t try to copy her hairstyle the way he did Miss Ross’. Not sure I coulda taken a platinum faux.

Melinda was good, although I still feel brain freeze every time she sings, so was Blake Lewis. The show is really losing it. Sanjaya might be the only thing keeping America’s interest at this point.

    Sanjaya goes faux-hawk

Finally Sanjaya Malakar delivers something worth watching on American Idol. No, he still can’t sing; but he is sure as hell making us laugh (at him)!!

I have been saying if he is going to stick around despite his inability to sing, then he needed to do something so absurdly ridiculous that it becomes entertainment.

Tonight, Sanjaya did just that! The tone-deaf Idol wanna-be showed up tonight with a HUGE faux-hawk! His song still sucked. Ryan Seacrest, Paula Abdul, Randy Jackson and Simon Cowell all shared a good laugh at the androgonous ones expense; but then again so did everyone else!

He has no musical ability! If he wins this competition he will take all credibilty that American Idol holds, but at least he is entertaining us now… despite the fact that it is just another reason for us to laugh at him.

Next week, I wanna see Sanjaya in drag! Think he will do it?!

While the Eye still had it in total viewers (11.4 million to 11.2 million for Fox), Fox swept the other demo categories, ranging from adults 25-54 (4.8/12) to viewers 12-34 (3.7/12)…

    Idol Talent Draining Ratings?

Really, it may not be Sanjaya’s fault. It could be Washington D.C.’s.

Whoever the culprit, American Idol’s ratings are doing something that American Idol ratings just don’t do: slip.

In a press conference Monday, Idol executive producer Nigel Lythgoe said Daylight Savings Time, which, per federal mandate began three weeks earlier than usual this year, is most likely behind the downward trend. Networks routinely blame the time change for encouraging viewers to stay outside in the sunlight, as opposed to sitting parked in front of their TVs.

But the Idol singers, whose ranks have included the much maligned Sanjaya Malakar and the much praised Melinda Doolittle, were not entirely acquitted…

Alaina Alexander Nude: American Idol Battle With Antonella Barba?

It worked for Antonella Barba. But where were the Alaina Alexander nude photos when the gorgeous American Idol babe was working on making a run at being the next American Idol? Antonella Barba carried the buzz for the contest with her wild photos that were leaked to the Internet from an outside source. Her photos featured a wet and wild Antonella while Alaina has used her MySpace page to post some very classy black and white stills along with a bit of her music.

Her timing is a bit off, though. She was dumped even before Antonella. Still she understands that sex sells, or at least gets then in the door, so one can guess she is getting some activity on her page…

    Who roots for the ‘Idols’?

à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“American Idolà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ is a singing competition, a national phenomenon, the most successful show on television, and at its heart, an election. And like these political candidates, à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Idolà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ candidates will be chosen not only based on who will do the best job, but by the size of the constituency to which they appeal.

Time for Riverwalk to step up

…Paleontologist Frank Garcia, Melissa McGhee of American Idol and a big-voiced Tarpon Springs 14-year-old named Jenna Lang gave stellar performances at Monday night’s Karaoke for Kids celebrity singing fundraiser.

It was fun and helped raise nearly $10,000 for the oncology unit at All Children’s Hospital. The talent ranged from good voices to good sports, and I want to believe I fell somewhere in the middle after butchering, I mean singing, Billy Joel’s You May Be Right.

    That’s all I’m saying.

Former ‘Idol’ hopeful performs at Gator’s

With “American Idol” in full swing on the Fox network, a former contestant comes to Montgomery for a show today.

Carmen Rasmusen, a final six contestant on the second season of the show (which was won by Birmingham’s Ruben Studdard), will perform at Gator’s Bar and Grill on Vaughn Road.

The Edmonton, Canada native was 17 when she was on the show.

Since her time on “American Idol,” Rasmusen had a cameo appearance in the film “Pride and Prejudice.” She also appeared on the film’s soundtrack with the single “Be With You.”

She completed her first four-song EP in December 2004 and is working on her debut album. Rasmusen recently signed to Lofton Creek Records (also the home of Alabama band Heartland).

Rasmusen will play a short set at 7:30 p.m. before “American Idol” comes on. Local favorite Anthony Oliver will do an acoustic set at 9 p.m.

The show is free. There will also be food and drink specials. WLWI 92.3 is sponsoring the show.

So ità ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s Gwen Stephani night. Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ve always thought she was beautiful but she looks even prettier if thatà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s possible tonight. And she really gave some pretty pointed comments about the singers. This should be good tonight…

Piers Morgan: ‘At last I’m a star – and it’s AWESOME!

    …APRIL 26

I boarded the flight to Los Angeles feeling excited. This could be my chance to be a proper ‘star’, with all the wonderful nonsense that entails. Cowell warned me that my chances of getting the job were probably less than 50:50, but told me: ‘Just go for it’.

In LA, I had a foretaste of what might lie in store for me as I watched American Idol’s live results show in the front row of the audience, just a few yards from Simon on the judges’ desk.

It was crazy. Over 1,000 people going bonkers in the studio, and 35 million Americans watching at home. As the credits rolled, Cowell leaned over and said: “That’s one way to earn $400,000.” Then he roared with laughter.

He told me he thought the new talent show had the potential to be as big as Idol. “If you get the job, you will become obscenely rich and absurdly famous.” …

Next week is going to really separate the singers from the non-singers. According to Access Hollywood, Tony Bennet will be the guest. Could it be American Standards week? If you can sing you shine, if you can’t you sink.

Last season pretty much everybody did well during that week with Kat standing ahead of the rest. My prediction the singers (Melinda, Lakisha, Jordin) will do well. The not that great of singers (Blake who I love but really doesn’t have that great of a voice if you listen to him with your eyes closed, Chris R., Sanjaya, Haley, etc) are going to sink like a stone.

The in betweens may do well if they chose wisely (Phil, Gina, Chris S.).

This week Gina shined! Who should go is Haley.

    She Should Have Worn This

“American Idol” castoff Alaina Alexander is showing off her other assets on her new MySpace music page.

Her alleged music page features four songs she’s laughably categorized as her “Greatest Hits,” and like any good ‘ol American idled wannabeen, she’s added some racy pics over which her teen admirers may care to drool.

Perhaps this little songbird should’ve flaunted that taut bod a little earlier in the singing contest. Like Haley Scarnato, whose singing puts one in the mind of performing televised tracheotomies, showing off her physical prowess might have kept her on the show until the inevitable vote-off.

I feel so terrible for Sanjaya sometimes. I mean, hey, he chose to put himself out there and he’s got to take his lumps, but…he’s really not a TERRIBLE singer; he’s just a terrible PERFORMER. But his lack of performing skills, and not really knowing what to do with his voice, is getting translated by some journalists into “Sanjaya can’t sing.” Kind of like last year, some journalists used “I don’t personally care for Taylor’s singing style” and “Taylor sucks a$$” interchangably. Of course I think Taylor was a far superior singer and performer than Sanjaya, but the hyperbole is the same. The difference is that Taylor was a full-grown man. Sanjaya is a boy. It’s just a little cruel. Did Covais take this much shit last year?

“Tony Bennet will be the guest.”

Really? Now, I’m excited. I might be the only one, but I love Tony Bennett. Got his duets cd “Tony Bennett Duets An American Classic” for Christmas and it is pretty excellent. The man is 80 years old and sings better than most of today’s crap. I watched a pbs special of him performing the songs from this cd and one of the commentators said something like “he learned his craft from going to jazz clubs and making his voice immitate the instruments”. I think he will have some good pointers for the contestants. Even if you’re laughing at my age and taste right now, give a few songs from this cd a listen. He sings with the Dixie Chicks, Streisand, James Taylor, Paul McCartney, Billy Joel, Elton John, Sting, Bono and a few others.

Off to put cd in stereo……..

Sligh doesn’t flash the magic on ‘Idol’

    “I was off. My bad.”

Greenville’s Chris Sligh didn’t make a strong case to stay in the top 10 on “American Idol” Tuesday evening, giving himself a poor assessment after performing the 1981 hit by The Police, “Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic.”

All three judges weren’t any easier on the bespectacled 28-year-old, noting that he didn’t follow the song’s tempo. “It was a train wreck for me,” said Randy Jackson. Fellow judges Paula Abdul and Simon Cowell had equally negative reviews.

But Tuesday’s effort may not knock Sligh out of the competition. In the past few weeks, the singers who have had the weaker performances have managed to stay in the running on the hit TV show…

I am not a Sligh fan but he needs to stay. He was just having an off night. He has a better voice than Blake and is funny too which he needs to show more. Hope he doesn’t get the boot but it is Haley. Her “light” voice will drown in American Standards Week if that is indeed the theme next week. He is the best! Glad you had fun. I couldn’t stand it and got tickets to LA and Vegas. I know I am an addict.

    Idol last night:
Gina and Phil surprised me, they have improved or picked really good songs for them. Phil didn’t wig me out as much as he usually does (looks like a singing skeleton)last night maybe it was the hat??

I didn’t think Chris R did as bad as some of the reviews above. I did think that Chris S and Haley were the worst last night. Haley should never had made it this far. Chris S is not growing and is at that point in the competition where he either steps it up or he goes home.

Hair boy…what can I say, there is something kind of charming about him but I agree with others above that he is just not a performer. I will say that he has come a long way from where he was in the beginning. I agree with JJ and Mass that he figures what do I have to lose and is taken on a stronger attitude and is having some fun with it. In away (and I can’t believe I am saying this) it would be interesting to see how much he could grow over the next 3 or 4 weeks…hmmm

Melinda is so good but I also agree with others that the shocked girl look has to go away and soon. She needs to believe in herself or it could come back to bite her later in the competition.

Lakisha- love her too but she needs to move beyond the diva sound and cannot display diva attitude or it will become a turn off. I wouldn’t count her out any time soon because I do think that she is a fighter, I just hope she is getting good advice and realistic feedback from people she trusts.

Okay that is 8/10 and I am not remembering the others which tell me that they didn’t make an impression…or I have a very bad memory. I would say that these 8 represent the lows and highs of the night for me.

Footnote: For those that are finding the show really boring or not entertaining…which is where I was a few weeks ago. I didn’t watch or snark for a couple of weeks and this week when I watched I thought that the hour was entertaining with some definite moments. Oh, and I don’t care how much time you take off the judges comments are redundant and boring.

  • jpfan

Do any of the nbrs. people know where Kat’s/Taylor’s CD nbrs. come in for last week. They don’t show up on HDD. Sanjaya doesn’t sound so bad when you listen to him. It’s the whole package that sucks.

Squishy – We agree! On Sinatra and Bennett. I am looking forward to seeing Mr. Bennett next week and hearing what some of the better singers do with the music.

Taylor in Concert – He is one of the best. A true showman. I have been to many, many concerts from BIG NAME performers and he and his band are right up there with the very best.

Just an Observation – Apropos of nothing, I checked the scary board’s posting numbers on each Idol today. It is interesting how few there are compared to last year. It may mean there are more outlets for people to “talk”, but I think it reflects the less than interesting nature of this year’s crop of contestants.

  • Little Boy Blue

BTW, When is Melinda going to graduate from the school of humility ?

Is there such a thing as being so humble all the time that eventually people find it annoying ?

  • JJ

Is there such a thing as being so humble all the time that eventually people find it annoying ?

Join the bandwagon, I came to that conclusion weeks ago.

  • Chrissey58

Jpfan–I find the judges very boring this year. Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ve heard it all before, the banter is scripted and Paula is being much too sane. Quick take her off the meds.

Don’t you mean “put her back on the meds”???

  • jpfan

It was always hard to tell if Paula was on or off the meds. She seems way too sane this year. It’s no fun. What’s idol with a sober Paula?

  • calimari

I did think Paula looked great last night, and I’m surprised she’s so coherent. Glad to know Taylor’s concert was good last night. I’m off to Chicago to see him tomorrow! FINALLY! Can’t wait.

jpfan: Do any of the nbrs. people know where Katà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s/Taylorà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s CD nbrs. come in for last week.

Ken Barnes normally posts numbers in the afternoon. Sometimes we get SS numbers leaked elsewhere.

    18 Katharine Mcphee “Over It” 40022 (60%) 207375

Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢m off to Chicago to see him tomorrow! FINALLY! Canà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t wait.

Here’s one for you and to Soul Patrol and Interested Parties,

If you’re interested in the age of Taylor’s concert goers, here’s an excerpt from a poster named Phantom…

    ————————-
My section on the left had a lot of very enthusiastic women who were thrilled to be seeing him live, including a group of midwest-looking girls in their late 20s or early 30à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s behind me that were grinning from ear to ear and taking pictures all night.

A few people shouted à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“We love you Taylorà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ and he looked into the light with this cock-eyed expression as if he were trying to see and yelled à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“I LOVE YOU TOO!à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ Cute. So some very good pockets of fans there but also lots of geriatrics. This one lady in the front row had to be 90 and had an oxygen tank! And there were others in walkers. Just bizarre.

Sitting next to me was a woman who was a fan but had never seen him live and didnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t have his CD. Even before the show she was talking about what a great performer he was and how he was the best thing to ever come out of AI. She was entraced during the show and boogeying along with me. She thought he was an awesome, awesome performer

  • radname

elliott saw a nice increase! lol 240% i think he’ll have a hard time staying at the top of the charts this week with 22 new releases

  • jpfan

“This one lady in the front row had to be 90 and had an oxygen tank! And there were others in walkers. Just bizarre.”

    Was MJ there?
Radname. I think Elliott shows signs of a having a decent 2nd week despite the tons of new releases. We’ll see. Peace out. Kirsten – thanks for nbrs.

  • Smiley

I kinda felt bad for Chris S last night, he really was totally off the beat. Very draggy, kind of like Stephanie last week. Haley gave a pageant performance.

Very surprised at the praise for Blake. Thought it was a snoozefest. He’s really not that great but I think TPTB want him because he is marketable and can easily fit into pop/top 40. Did NOT agree that he is comparable to Chris Daughtry! Guys this year are nowhere near last year’s.

  • SEXYGIRL

    Good Morning everyone.

Okay, last night was a real snoozer for me. Couldn’t wait for nineo”clock to hit so I could change the channel to watch DTWS and couldn’t have done it quick enough.

You know something is wrong when the highlight of last night’s performance and today’s articles was/is somone’s hairstyle. What I find so funny is, no matter how bad some have been accusing Sanjaya of singing, one of the other contestants step up and out do him in that department.. Last night there were quite a few who made Sanjaya sound a bit like a choirboy. I usually take a quick glance at the contestants then walk away and just listen to them sing. And I must say, Chris S, Jordin and Haley were off last night. Blake and Chris R., I am beginning to think that I just don’t care for their vocals because everyone was hyping and praising them and I just thought they were bad…Well, they were not really praising Chris R. Phil, I don’t remember what he sounded like. Lakisha I liked and Melinda, I was to busy thinking of who she reminded of. She is beginning to bore me. IMO, the best one of the night was Gina.

  • folk

i need to know…what is next weeks theme?

  • calimari

I think they were comparing Blake to Daughtry in that he’s doing a lot of the same thing week after week, and he’s going to need to mix it up. Daughtry was the same week after week last year up to a point, when he finally started to mix it up. Oddly enough, they need to give the same advice to kiki & melinda.
LBB – I’m 43, and I took my sister (53) to see Bob Seger in December. He’s her favorite, and she had NEVER been to a concert in her life at all. Because she had a knee injury, she couldn’t handle steps at the stadium so I arranged for us to sit near handicap access so she wouldn’t have stairs. It was a hoot. We were in a row of walkers, oxygen tanks, crutches, broken feet, etc. And they were all standing & boogying to the best of their varied abilities! We were making jokes singing “Rock & Roll Never Forgets”! What forgets? Who forgot? Rock and Rye? No thanks I’m not thirsty!

  • Kirsten

Standards. Tony Bennett will be guest coaching.

American Idol Song Competition Still Planned

Even though American Idol producer Ken Warwick told TV Week that the song competition was on hold, fellow American Idol producer Nigel Lythgoe recently revealed that it will likely still happen. Lythgoe said à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Hopefully theyà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢re still going to do the song competition. The song competition hasnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t really anything to do with Ken and I. Ità ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s to do with 19 and 19 Music, which is a separate area and then Ken and I were talking about trying to bounce off the song competition by offering Fox a special or a couple of specials on it.à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ Ãƒ ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ¦

    http://www.realitytvmagazine.com/blog/2007/03/american_idol_s_2.html

Golly gee, does poor Nigel sound a little disappointed to be sucked into this “black hole” of giving, instead of those multi-million dollar making specials?

  • squishy

    Calimari,

I agree the same advice Simon gave to Blake about being in the “Chris Daughtry zone” which is “doing your own thing regardless of what the theme is”, he needs to give to Lakisha and Melinda. Lakisha needs to sing music sung by someone OTHER THAN a Black female singer and Melinda needs to stop with that “dumb humble pie” crap.

  • http://www.myspace.com/mignonette33 purplesmile

Did Covais take this much shit last year?

I wasn’t at mj’s yet at the time, but I don’t think he did. Maybe because there was a lot more to talk about then as that batch was a pretty interesting and diverse one. Many other things were going on.

  • http://www.myspace.com/mignonette33 purplesmile

I’m excited about Standards week. I like Tony Bennett. :-)

  • bean99

Didn’t Chris D end up in the bottom 3 when he listened to them? I’m sure that if Blake does try something completely different for him, Randy & Simon will say that he should have made the song his own.

  • Stefunny

    My thoughts:

I powervoted for ChrisS b/c I don’t think one off night deserves a boot. I also didn’t think he was *that* bad.

Haley ruined True Colors and it is a really beautiful song.

Lakisha seems strangely detached when she sings…almost like an automaton. And is there any other kind of artist she can emulate? Someone not black diva?

Blake, quite honestly, was boring. I really like Blake and I love Love Song–all kind of sentimental memories attached to it-but the arrangement was just flat and too one-key for me.

There is nothing ChrisR could sing that I would like. I just can’t stand the nasally pinch of his voice plus I’m not a big fan of R&B.

Melinda’s lower register is fantastic. AI seems to usually focus on sopranos so it’s nice to have an alto represent. That said, I didn’t get chills or think it was all that special.

And Sanjaya is so ridiculous. AI is already teetering on joke status and the longer he stays, the more likely the show jumps the shark for good. When Drudge has him as the big front page photo/story, you know it ain’t good.

  • kmh303

    Little Debbi,

Hey JJ. Have you ever been to the Chevrolet Theatre in Wallingford? If so, is it a nice venue for a concert?

I know I’m eavesdropping and NOT JJ, but just wanted to jump in here…I’ve been to several shows at the theatre, and they’ve been terrific. It’s small enough to make every seat a great one, but it’s large enough to handle great sound quality.

I hope to encounter Blake there someday soon. :wub_tb:

Excellent week for Kat’s single. :)

    Thanks for the numbers Kirsten.

  • Metta

    Good morning.

LaKisha and Gina were the best last nite. Chris R was terrible. Haley and Melinda were boring. Sligh was disappointing. Phil was overrated. Blake was meh, but I still like his song choices. Jordin is still very cute, and still may win, but she’s like a Disney character to me.

Performance-wise, Sanjaya was…Sanjaya. But he seems emboldened, now. It will be interesting watching his attitude evolve into cockiness as he survives week after week.

  • Stefunny

I will admit to being part of Kat’s 60%. I downloaded Over It last week just b/c it is so catchy and good music for walking the dog. Also helped out Carrie with Before He Cheats.

Has anyone heard the AI mp3′s yet?

  • Little Debbi

Hi kmh303. Thanks very much for the info on that venue. I might go see Tony Bennett there in May. I love the small venues with the good acoustics. The Northfork theater here (where I’m going to see the guy who won idol last year) is like that and we go all the time.

    Thanks again.

Morning Metta – only 10 days.

  • http://www.idolicious.com Kat

If Kat had a huge increase in sales for “Open Toes,” I’d smile; it’s such a freaking bad song, it’s almost so bad it’s good. But “Over It?” It’s the worst type of bad, because it’s bland and vague in the most calculated-by-a-shriveled-old-record-executive-to-appeal-to-the-masses way possible. But meh. Congrats to her, I guess. Hey, Daniel Powter had a hit single, too. :-)

  • Lu

Is there a site where someone who missed the show last night can see all of the performances?

  • http://www.idolicious.com Kat

Has anyone heard the AI mp3à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s yet?

I was wondering the same thing. I haven’t signed up to buy any of them yet. I guess the last place I want to have my E-mail address is the American Idol website. I’m afraid of spam pushing me to buy Daughtry’s CD. :-)

Melinda is getting excrutiatingly boring, almost as boring as LaKisha. I really loved her “My Funny Valentine” and “I’m a Woman,” but I no longer look forward to her performances. And I’m always afraid that LaKisha is going to jump right out of the screen a la The Ring and sing angrily right up in my face.

  • http://www.idolicious.com Kat

Truthfullyà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ¦who of this crop do you see getting a solo record and doing relatively well with it?

I think if we’ve learned anything from the last crop, it’s that being a close copy of an already popular act/genre is the way to go. That’s what Daughtry did and he’s selling like hotcakes. Katharine, I think, is struggling because her album takes a lot of genres–some hot, some not, and mashes them all up. She’s Jessica, Christina, Britney, Rihanna, Mariah all in one. And Taylor is just in a musical world of his own.

Short answer: whoever does the best job of latching onto a hot genre and holding on for dear life is the one who will sell, IMO. Honestly, if Sligh can parlay his band into something close to Snow Patrol or maybe Augustana, I think he’s got the best chance of selling. Only as a band frontman, though. Not a solo artist.

  • Kylene

Truthfullyà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ¦who of this crop do you see getting a solo record and doing relatively well with it?

Well, my heart says Blake, just cause I’d buy it due to the crush factor. (damn you, Blake) I do wonder, however, if the novelty would wear off quickly.

I’m someone who loves AI as a show…something entertaining to watch, but not necessarily something to discover some huge talent that I MUST own an album from. I only own two Idols’ music, and it takes a lot to get me to shell out twenty bucks for the cd.

So in reality? Blake’s the only one I’d buy. I’m not invested in anyone else.

  • Kirsten

Stefunny: In a William Hung kinda way or a serious way? à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‹Cause I donà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t see it except for the joke aspect.

He might actually be able to do it in a teen heart throb kind of way. Like Rick Springfield of yore or High School Musical (3.86 million) today. Hannah Montana (2.29 million )and Hilary Duff move serious amounts of units due to their appeal to teens, not their vocal chops.

  • JJ

In a William Hung kinda way or a serious way? à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‹Cause I donà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t see it except for the joke aspect.

Honestly, I see him gracing the cover of Tiger Beat magazine. He will date Mylie Cyrus. He will be in the vain of Shaun Cassidy/ Leif Garrett/ Donny Osmond, etc

  • Kirsten

Billboard is reporting the following Idol related album sales numbers:

    3 Elliott Yamin 90,000
    4 Daughtry 76,000

Mighty Mouse was one with 129K and Joss was second with 118K

Album sales are up 2.6% from last week’s total at 8.5 million units and down 18.2% compared to the same week last year. Overall album sales for the year are down 17% from last year at 108 million units.

  • Kylene

You guys are right about that tween/early teen set being a huge moneymaking machine. I won’t be surprised when Sanjaya is the one we’re still talking about three seasons from now, long after Chris Sligh’s name is forgotten and no one can remember what Haley looked like.

Does anyone channel surf the morning news shows? Sanjaya’s fauxhawk on every channel, all within their 7-8 am hour. Barely mention of the other singers. It’s all about Sanjaya, for good or bad (ok, let’s be honest…it’s mostly bad). The air’s really going to be let out of the balloon when he gets voted off.

In one of LisaB’s articles she posted this morning(and thanks so much LisaB), it says that Sanjaya is opening for Daughtry. Is that really true? If it is, that might be an indication of his fame. The media is certainly eating him up.

Thanks for the info, Kirsten! Congratulations, Elliott! :)

Modest Mouse Steers Its ‘Ship’ To No. 1 Debut

…”American Idol” 2006 third-place finisher Elliott Yamin’s self-titled Hickory Records debut sold 90,000 copies to debut at No. 3. Yamin becomes the fifth finalist from last year’s edition of the show to reach The Billboard 200, joining Taylor Hicks, Katharine McPhee, Kellie Pickler and this week’s No. 4 artist, Chris Daughtry. Daughtry’s self-titled RCA album holds tight in that position for a second week, selling 76,000 copies with a modest 4% drop in sales…

  • http://www.idolicious.com Kat

Lisa, I know that the stylists have input and make suggestions, but no one’s forced to wear anything they don’t want and they can’t stop people from making bad choices. I think Gina has a nice figure, but she (or someone) keeps picking shiny, satiny pieces that accentuate her less-toned areas. She did, however, wear a cotton tunic top and skinny jeans one night, and I thought she looked great. But yeah, her outfit last night was a fashion miss. So was Melinda’s, who admittedly has a kind of strange figure, and Jordin’s, whose multiple layers and full skirt made her look bigger than she is, whereas her black dress last week was PERFECT.

Sanjaya is turning into the de-facto star of the show. People tune in to see what he’ll do next. He’s entertaining. Not bad looking, the tweens love him and he can be pro-tooled. Sanjaya ain’t going to win. TPTB will just throw out “votes” and make Melinda, Lakisha, Jordin, or Blake the winner. Sanjaya is my mom’s favorite and she votes for him every time her 5 “power votes”. I am sure he is the favorite of many tweens and grandmothers every where.

I wasn’t around then, but I do remember the story of the game show scandal of the 50′s. If they manipulate the votes, its the same thing. I really don’t think they are doing that. I believe they try to steer the votes in a certain direction, but I don’t believe the votes are actually manipulated.

Blake is pathetic. He continues to pick one-note songs.

Why is he pathetic for picking songs within his range?

  • http://www.myspace.com/mignonette33 purplesmile

This is a star, not the best singer but he is the highlight of the show. I still say heà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s going to win this thing.

    Yeah! What she said.

I’d be happy for him if that happened, but I’d refrain from reading the news reports the day/s (and weeks) after. Yaiks! :-/

  • Little Debbi

I read this at GC. Two posters saw two people on the Today Show today holding signs that said “Taylor Hicks at Carnegie Hall”

    ????????????? :shock_tb:

  • squishy

I think that if Blake had a great voice he would win the whole thing for his has the style, looks, charisma, and performance but the voice is a “meh”. I was enjoying Blake’s performance last night while my husband was reading a book while watching the show. After Blakes’ performance my husband looked up and said “that was terrible”. I argued with him and said it wasn’t that bad. My husband said just close your eyes and listen to him. I did and I had to agree that it just wasn’t that good. All these weeks I have been duped by Blake’s pizzazz.

  • Metta

I believe they try to steer the votes in a certain direction,

Now that is the way to effectively use a brain cell.

  • undecided

But, squishy. They don’t want the best singer to win. They want the most entertaining show. RCA wants someone with a fan following that will sell CDs. They want the most marketable. That isn’t going to be Melinda, LeKisha, Jordin or Blake. Black Divas, White Girl R&B and Fugly Boy Bland isn’t going to sell like Cute Teen Heart Throb.

  • emeralgem

I admit he is the highlight of the show.. I am also beginning to believe TPTB are beginning to believe it also.

  • MN Sue

Pausing from packing for my Chicago Taylor concert trip to comment. Imagine what overdubbing and ProTools could do with Blake and Chris R’s voices.

TPTB will just throw out à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“votesà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ and make Melinda, Lakisha, Jordin, or Blake the winner

I wasnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t around then, but I do remember the story of the game show scandal of the 50à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s. If they manipulate the votes, its the same thing.

It isn’t the same thing. AI is not a game show. It’s a reality show and the FTC treats it the same as professional wrestling. This is a fact that came to light during the furor after season 2. It was revealed that TPTB threw out all of Clay’s text messages because they suspected power dialers or some bloody excuse like that, The rules for AI specifically state that they can disregard votes and determine the final winner at their discretion. That is why many people say Clay got robbed.

The rules for AI specifically state that they can disregard votes and determine the final winner at their discretion.

Where can we see this? Also, even though they may have discretion under certain circumstances (eg, statistical ties or power voting–and I don’t mean Squishy’s mom), abusing that power to such a degree–and getting caught–would be the end of the show. Hiding behind the small print will do them no good. They would be killing the golden goose. It makes more sense that they would suck it up (like they did with Taylor) and sign whoever they want (as they did with daughtry.)

  • emeralgem

Stev-o are you around? Did Sligh say last night that he had to change his song choice this past week? If so, do you know why?

  • Terrie

    MJ, ITA about Chris Sligh.

The idiots-in-charge better hope he isn’t leaving anytime soon. Without Chris Sligh, Blake and Jordin, this season would be as entertaining as watching paint dry.

My hometown blogger, The Watcher at the O.C. Register, didn’t agree with the judges’ pile-on. Over as Monsters and Critics, the reviewer called Chris a “fierce singer.” I think that’s what has been largely missing from his performances since the judges turned on him: a fierceness and passion.

I hope he survives to sing another week. Next time, he needs to forget the judges, pick a catchy song in his comfort zone, and sing the stuffing out of it like we know he can. Gina is proof that one good week can turn your prospects around immediately.

(Now watch Gina get eliminated tonight. Sorry, Gina!)

  • Tony

Why is he pathetic for picking songs within his range?

Well therein lies the problem: Blake’s limited range should have been a factor that prevented him from making the top 24. While everyone else is attempting to push themselves, it seems like Blake is being judged based on HIMSELF, and not relative to the competition.

“Blake, you were better than last week, which makes you a front-runner.”

“Haley, you were safe and everyone else outsang you.”

    Huge double-standard.

hs: Kirsten, what is Billboard as opposed to HDD? I just donà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t all of thisà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ¦

Billboard is talking about the numbers reported by SoundScan. SoundScan counts each CD as it is sold (although not all vendors report to SoundScan, most do). HDD receives reports from some vendors and uses a model to estimate how many CDs were sold. SS numbers are the ones that most press will report because they are the most accurate. Those numbers will be used to create the chart positions on Billboard.

  • MaryS-NJ

Truthfullyà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ¦who of this crop do you see getting a solo record and doing relatively well with it?

Hard for me to say because apparently I like the unpopular genres and don’t listen to what the “cool kids” are listening to. Example: I like Taylor’s music better than Daughtry’s or Katharine’s.

Keeping that in mind, when Sanjaya is finally booted (please God) and simmers down, I can absolutely see him cast in a High School Musical sequel, or cut an album like the former Disney stars and make a little career as a tween hearthrob. Those actually do quite well sales-wise. If anyone can make a musical silk purse out of a sow’s ear, it’s Disney.

I do not get Chris R.’s appeal at all. He’s very generic in every way. That’s probably why he will sell the most of this bunch.

I do like Jordin and Blake although neither excites me and I think they would probably do respectably well in teen/pop and adult contemporary markets, respectively.

Chris S. is indie to me and I would probably buy his band’s record but agree that he’s not a solo artist. I’d also buy an album of Melinda’s, but would prefer to see her on a Broadway stage.

This show has moved way beyond “winner takes all” now. So it matters to some extent who wins (or at least makes the final 2), but doesn’t really the day after the finale.

Sanjaya is bringing in exactly what they want — BUZZ! Whether he wins or loses is immaterial. It is the show and bringing in the viewers and text votes that are paramount to AI, the TV Show.

They are doing a bit of pimping of Blake because they know he is creating some reaction and they would like for him to be around to create just a bit more.

Not being invested in anyone on this show has really made me pay attention to the up/down arrows on contestants each week.

    On another note…

I think Sligh’s toast tonight. His support on DialIdol has always been soft, and we all know what early performance slot + soft fanbase + meh performance means. Haley still has the “only hot chick left” thing going for her, and that is probably enough to push her past her overall blah-ness last night. They were working overtime to ensure Chris R’s fanbase turned out so I expect he’ll be around a while. Sanjaya… no words necessary. Yep, Sligh’s toast. Though I would be happier if it was Phil or Haley.

Despite all the complaining this season they’ve actually been pretty acurate. Everyone who went home was predicted by them to be within bootee range. The only major exception was when Sanjaya turned up in the bottom 3 one week. They are about as accurate as they were last year this time.

Still, I think Sligh is going home not because of their predictions per se, but because of the reasons I mentioned. I always think going early + being bad is bad news if you don’t have the fanbase to support you.

Agreed! TPTB should be bowing down to the altar of Sanjaya every week. Without him, this season is a big borefest. You don’t hear people eagerly anticipating Lakish and Melinda bringing an exciting new twist to an old song, or the Chris’s bringing us to our feet with an amazing performance that pulls out all the stops, or Haley bringing us to tears as she writhes on the floor singing a heartbreaking a capella ballad.
But Sanjaya is everywhere! People can’t stop talking about him! We approach each new week with a giddy anticipation wondering what kind of crazy show he will put on this time!

When Lithgoe said that beyond à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Homeà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ being used, Daughtry has not be favored is BULLSHIT. How about all those promos at the beginning of the shows highlighting the top record sellers – how about using à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Homeà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ in AI commericials that surround the show – how about the à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‹gum on the pictureà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ from Simon Cowell or how Sundance was somehow a better singer than Taylor? I can only HOPE that Chris does NOT appear on the show. Taylor should be and will be at the finale, at least. Katharine, before Chris, should be there on the show as well (since she was the runner-up. Chris was fourth. They had Bo on last year). Weà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ll see.

Yes Daughtry has proved their (his?) might in the marketplace. However, I think AI should at least pretend that it means something to be *actual* winner on the show, and not just a “what have you done for me lately” footnote to the commercial “winner”.

Of course, we all know now that winning on AI really means bubkis to the PTB, but I think it still means something to the folks who vote and get invested in the show. I know I don’t pick a favorite based on how well they will profit the PTB. I think it would really punctuate the fact that winning means nothing if they show favoritism to the 4th place finisher over the winner, first and second runners-up.

Silly analogy on Melinda’s shyness. Not to be mean, but we all know she has little or no neck. Try making the smile and gesture you would make when you are “being shy”. You (or at least I do) shrug your shoulders up and give a silly little smile. Maybe she is just giving the silly little smile and the lack of neck is doing the shoulder shrug thing for her – resulting in the look that annoys a lot of people. And, maybe the silly little smile is just her smile.

Now I have to go watch a video of her and see if the shoulders move up or it’s just the smile.

O.K., you can tell I’m bored. Carry on.

  • mnsoul

Is it just me, or do none of the contestants seem to really want to win this shabang. The only one that shows it in their performances may be Jordan. ‘Course they don’t really need to. They’ve all already won future contracts of some kind. yawn. boring.

As for Sligh, I just fail to see the great vocals that week after week everyone comments about. I haven’t heard any of his band songs, so maybe that’s what I’m missing. But he hasn’t impressed me to date yet. He is just so awkward to watch on stage, which is strange for someone experienced playing in a band. I haven’t heard him add much of anything vocally to the songs – just sings it note for note. Endless Love was a neat arrangement, but he still had bland vocals with it. There’s not much expression on his face; you can’t really see his eyes. It’s hard to connect with him. If he is indeed the best male singer up there, then SHOW ME THE MONEY.

    Idol’s Workshop
Taylor Hicks aims small and digs Irish soul.

It’s an astute strategy; he’s not looking for short-term success, and a second arena tour this soon after his national debut could have been an easy fast track to quick, free-fallin’ burnout. It’s really hard to get larger when you have already received more votes to win a televised singing contest than any political figure does to win office, including the president.

“It’s crazy, isn’t it?” he asks, referring to America’s appetite for a good tune versus a good leader. “I want to be a career artist, not a flavor of the month. What you do after you win [AI], you really have to take it and use it to your advantage. For me, I have to get the point across that I’m a real artist — a performing, touring artist. It needs to start in the intimate settings, where you can really communicate that idea.”

Thanked for his brief yet gracious time, Taylor Hicks makes a concluding move that’s rather different from most pop and rap stars who endure cattle-call interviews on daily tour stops. What he does is wonderful. He doesn’t direct me or Scene’s readers to go get his album, in stores now. There’s no Taylor Hicks clothing line to hawk or branded beverage coming soon.

Instead, there’s a far more pressing recommendation on his mind.

“Make sure you check out that Van Morrison album — it’s really good,” he insists. “It’s Too Late to Stop Now.”

Yep, Chris will definitely be on the show. I predict that he will either be on Top 4 week when Jon Bon jovi is the guest and sings that Wednesday and/or will be in the Season finale singing “Home”.

I agree that TPTB will make a big deal out of it (as they have been doing all season) since Chris is the 4th place finisher and sold > 2 million albums.

Some how Chris Daughtry gets mentioned almost every week on AI by somebody. It is all about the benjamins folks. It really isn’t about dissing Taylor.

  • SEXYGIRL

Agreed! TPTB should be bowing down to the altar of Sanjaya every week. Without him, this season is a big borefest.

I’ve been saying that from day one. I wonder who they will use when Sanjaya goes. I’m happy to see EW takes Chris S. and Taylor real serious. Let’s see Chris D a heartthrob. He’s barely 5 7, blad, and stocky. Yep, sounds like heartthrob material to me.

I’ve never heard Gwen cite Donna Summer as an influence before, and I don’t hear any traces of Summer in her music. I wonder if the producers just added that in order to give Lakisha and Melinda something to sing.
It would have been a lot more fun to have them sing some No Doubt, Cure, or Police.
I love the story about how a young, chubby, teenaged Gwen met Sting after a show .

“My dad was like, ‘Ask him for his autograph,’ so I did, and he was really mean. “But I loved him. When I met Sting years later, I told him that story, and he was like, ‘Oh man, I was such a d**k back then.’ But he’s such a great guy.”

squishy: Of course Chris will be on the show. Nigel is just speaking à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“politically correctà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ on this subject.

I must have missed when Chris became politically incorrect. Did he get caught bashing in the heads of baby seals or are there hidden messages in his music telling us to send money to terrorists?

Why on EARTH (or even just the Hot 100/AC/Pop charts) would Nigel deny Chris was going to be on the show if he knew he was going to be on the show? This was a press conference, not a meeting of the Soul Patrol. I don’t get the reason why you would think Chris appearing on the show should be some dark secret that must be kept under cover.

Ace and Daughtry are neck and neck as the official Idol hearthrob (38% each), beating out this yearà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s Chris R and Constantine (heh).

I usually try to refrain from the little d (tm Nevada) bashing but in what universe is Chris even remotely as attractive as Ace? While I myself would vote for Ace in this category, there are at least 6 previous contestants I would put ahead of Chris. No comparison. None whatsoever. And, guys who wear that much guyliner are a little too girly for me to equate them with “hearthrob” status.

  • Kirsten

squishy: Of course Chris will be on the show. Nigel is just speaking à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“politically correctà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ on this subject.

Since when did Chris become politically incorrect? Was he caught on film caving in the skulls of baby seals on the ice flows or does his music secrectly direct us to send money to foreign enemies of state?

Seriously, why on EARTH (or just the Hot 100/AC/Pop charts)would Nigel need to keep it a dark secret that Chris was going to be on the show? This was a press conference, not a meeting of militant wing of the Soul Patrol. It isn’t like the news isn’t going to leak out someday anyway. It may be that they are sorting out the details, but that has nothing to do with being “politically correct”

    1. YAMIN*ELLIOTT ELLIOTT YAMIN 90439 Total: 90511

This means that he was the top selling independent artist last week and that there were 72 street violations (albums sold last week).

Here are the album numbers from Ken over at Idol Chatter:

    3. Elliot 90,000
    4. Daughtry 76,000 total 2.04 million
    15. Carrie 38,000 (-11%) total 5.12 million
    73. Katharine 11,000 total 270,000
    131. Kellie 6,700 total 478,000
    139. Fantasia 6,800 330,000

    Off the Chart:
    Taylor 3,400 total 661,000
    Ruben 1,500 total 217,000
    Clay 800 total 506,000
    Kelly 4,400 total 5.7 million

Kelly’s numbers would have been enough to get her on the chart (cut-off was 4100) but albums which have been out for more than 2 years cannot chart on the BB200.

He still has a long way to go to catch up to Taylor’s earnings this year (or at least since the end of AI5), which is probably in the range of 1-2 million. Taylor’s strength is that he’s able to put people in seats in concerts halls -and we all know that’s where the big money is made in the music industry – not by getting a song on a compilation CD. Take that to the bank.

  • SpenserJ

Well, I for one am pretty darn sure they will have Chris on the show this season. The only way I would believe that he wasn’t going to be on it, is if he said he didn’t want to for some reason.

But, since he’s happily lent his songs to both AI and a compilation CD I do not believe that he will all of sudden refuse to show up on a TV show.

I understand from certain articles that some believe he has tried to distance himself from AI for maybe either the coolness factor or rock cred, but I simply do not believe he can be all that concerned about either of those things. He seems more than willing to pimp his music out for any cash they seem willing to throw at him. And, being the parent of two children myself, I totally understand that desire to make as much money as he can right now.

So yeah, he’ll be there. My guess would be top 3 night. The finale is a little crowded usually for a 4th place finisher and I doubt that Jon Bon Jovi wants to share his night with anyone else and he shouldn’t have to. He’s fucking Bon Jovi or crying out loud. He’s had a 20 year career. He should have the night all to himself.

If it’s official radio debut’s were talking about, why even compare “Bad Day” to “Home”? Why not compare it to “Irreplaceable” or the “Macarena”?

I think “Home” is doing a great job of demonstrating that being the AI Boot song does not guarantee a hit. Everybody kept saying last year that “Bad Day” was only a hit because it was being played for 30 million AI viewers each week. Well, “Home” has shown that it might help to be on the show, but it won’t get you to the top of the Hot 100 and 2 million downloads just be being played on the most popular show on TV.

And radio programmers can play whatever the heck they want. They don’t have to wait for add dates. “Home” is getting some spins in several formats. Just not enough to top any chart.

Nevada will probably critique my estimated numbers. But Daughtry sold 2 million CD’s.

The conservative estimate is an artist makes just 4 cents on the dollar for every CD sold.

    So 2,000,000 CD X $12/CD = $24,000,000 made

    Daughtry’s share is :

    $24,000,000 X $.04 = $960,000 ( from PHYSICAL SALES ALONE ).

And oh yeah, we haven’t included in the above count the DOWNLOADS and DIGITAL SALES.

Add in all the promos and concerts he does… and yes, Daughtry is a millionaire as well.

“A Little More Money” looks to be an understatement to me.

He still has a long way to go to catch up to Taylorà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s earnings this year, which is probably in the range of 1-2 million. Taylorà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s strength is that heà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s able to put people in seats in concerts halls -and we all know thatà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s where the big money is made in the music industry – not by getting a song on a compilation CD. Take that to the bank.

I think Taylor is closer to 3 million, griz, somewhere between 2 and 3 million. He has a platinum album and they get $1.00 on avg. per CD sale. He was given $750,000 advance for his book. He did very well with DIMYP sales. He had the Idol Tour. He had oodles of promotions and they get paid for those. He now has his own tour and is selling out. Yeah, he’s a very wealthy man.

Squishy, I can’t find my camera cord. I will hopefully find it tonight. (My daughter dressed up as Ariel for the Greensboro Daughtry concert so she could look pretty for Chris). She looked adorable. She keeps telling people that she saw Chris and that she got to hear him sing It’s Not Over.

  • Former_AI_Junkie

The only objective criterion for how good music is, is how long it lasts, i.e., if it has true universal appeal that transcends time, culture, and what’s pushed on the public by music moguls.

One may not particularly care for like Mozart, but his music has survived hundreds of years.

The Beatles are still one of the most popular bands on the planet and they’ve been broken up for over 3 decades.

The whole argument of “which Idol is better” will only be decided in about 15 years’ time, when a generation has passed. See who’s still listening to any of them then.

I won’t state my predictions on the subject, since I agree this argument is pointless.

  • squishy

    Kirsten,

True, just as being an AI winner doesn’t guarantee platinum CD sales, being the AI boot song alone doesn’t guarantee single sales. I agree that the total package is needed in order to sell a CD or a single which is radio airplay, video, and other promotion.

It will be interesting to see what happens to “Home” once it gets significant radio airplay and the video comes out. Chris’ “It’s Not Over” did not become a Top 10 Hit on the Billboard charts until it got significant radio airplay and the video was on VH-1 and MTV.

  • AFan

Ok so last night was nothing short of underwhelming. I think my girl Gina finally knocked out a great performance that the judges really enjoyed. I think Gina is actually the dark horse of this competition. I think there are people outshining her and people doing worse than her. I’ll give her at lease 3 more weeks of being totally safe. She might land herself in the bottom 3 after that. Lakisha sang well enough but she’s so damn boring. All I got from her performances was mixed feelings about that dress and WOW boobies!
I thought Chris R did well. I think that he’s getting a little to influenced by the guest judges and molding his performance style to their needs to not offend them. I agree with Randy. I like his runs, and if he wants to do them, he should. Blake was good, but it was just weird for this competition. I would have loved that as a regular performances but it seemed odd since everyone tries to show off their explosive vocals on this show. He’s actually kind of refreshing IMO. I stated yesterday that Sligh’s personality was a little but more appealing this week. He’s still in dangerous tool territory for me. And, dude, find the effing beat will ya! Sanjaya, just no words… hilariously awesome. The hair! Dean! Why!? OMG. Jordin looks like a linebacker and her performance was good but didn’t stand out. Melinda’s nice shit is kinda starting to get to me too. I wish she would start picking songs I like, lol. Phil, again, whatever. But I do like the tone of his voice. Bye, Haley.
Also, congrats to Kat on the surge of downloads. I think her song on The Hills might have helped her out. Also her Self Magazine cover stuff. Damn she looked hot.
Also, about the season 5 stuff. I’ll take a page from Paula’s dictionary of words and say that they have all fallen into their own pockets. There’s no need to say anyone “bombed” or that someone doesn’t deserve their success. They all deserve it. And I’m glad all of them are doing what they want to do. Yes, even Taylor.

  • SpenserJ

So, on the Season 6 front: I’m with those of you who believe that Haley is tonight’s bootee. I still believe that AI either opened more phone lines or used some other strategery to thwart Dial Idol’s results. So, I believe their rankings to be rather meaningless. Of course, I could be 100% wrong here but it’s just what I think.

I know there is a lot of love for Sligh, but I don’t believe he has a chance in hell of winning this thing. He’s got a good voice but he’s lacking in some other qualities. And, he just doesn’t translate well to TV. This is not the medium for him, but I wish him great success with his band or whatever career path he chooses after this.

I am still pained that I have to admit to myself how well Awphil (tm Dave) did last night, but it’s a fact so I gotta go with it.

    So GO TEAM PLAID!

  • griz

So yeah, heà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ll be there. My guess would be top 3 night.

Top 3 night is Clive Davis night – Chris will never be on that episode, thankfully.

Nola said: I think Taylor is closer to 3 million, griz, somewhere between 2 and 3 million. He has a platinum album and they get $1.00 on avg. per CD sale. Yep, you’re prolly right and I was prolly underestimating his wealth. He’s now booking summer dates as well as the booksigning tour all well. Then of course, we got that new album starting in the fall! :clap_tb:

  • SpenserJ

Heà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s actually kind of refreshing IMO.

I totally agree with this. I guess it is why I was in Gwen’s camp last night. Her disdain for the vocal gymnastics usually set forth on AI was very transparent and I totally agree with her.

Blake comes out every week and sings a song. He likes to put his own little spin on it, and maybe he doesn’t have Mariah-like range. But, he entertains me. And he’s a gosh darn breath of fresh air compared to the rest of them.

  • squishy

    Jennifer,

I can’t wait to see your daughter in her Ariel costume. How cute is that!!!!

  • jenniferg72

Spenser, I totally agree. Blake entertains me. Each week I wonder what he is going to do next. Love song is one of my all time favorite songs. Last night wasn’t my favorite Blake performance because that song requires a yearning that he didn’t portray last night night. But I thought he did good. I think that no matter where he places, he will end up making a commercially viable record that sells alot of records. But I do hope he goes far in the competition.

  • SpenserJ

Top 3 night is Clive Davis night – Chris will never be on that episode,

See, you guys all remember these little details. It’s a good thing I have you around – I’ve never noticed which night it is that Clive comes on to show off the platinum records. I have noticed however that he looks like a corpse and has less teleprompter reading skills than Donald Trump. Which, in case you’re not sure, is pretty bad.

  • jadore

How can Daughtry still be selling 76,000 CDà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s a week. Who are all these people who havenà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t already bought it.

    TPTB

No other logical way to explain it, clearly :doh_tb:

  • Little Boy Blue

Heà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s now booking summer dates as well as the booksigning tour all well.

So, how do you think his book will do in terms of sales ?

  • squishy

I think Blake will go far because he is different and stands out which is really important. I am just not a fan of his voice but he is entertaining.

What is interesting though is that Blake is never that high on Dial Idol. I would think he would be more popular and register higher on that site. Typically at the top are Melinda, Lakisha, and Sanjaya. Blake is usually in the middle or even lower.

  • MaryS-NJ

    So 2,000,000 CD X $12/CD = $24,000,000 made

    Daughtryà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s share is :

    $24,000,000 X $.04 = $960,000 ( from PHYSICAL SALES ALONE ).

If the comparison is being made between Daughtry and Daniel Powter based on the boot song, shouldn’t it be a digital single – not CD, LBB? DP didn’t sell millions of CDs but he sold about 2 million single downloads. Or are you speaking currently in general terms?

  • Kirsten

True, just as being an AI winner doesnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t guarantee platinum CD sales, being the AI boot song alone doesnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t guarantee single sales.

Full power to the forward deflectors, I see.

“When somebody is less than 100% positive about something your Idol has done, make sure that you drag another Idol into the debate no matter how unrelated.”…

I was just discussing the value of being a Boot song. I’m not stating anything about the quality of “Home”. Being a “Boot” song is valuable, but it did not necessarily make “Bad Day” the MONSTER hit that it became. That’s all. Peace.

  • SpenserJ

I canà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t wait to see your daughter in her Ariel costume. How cute is that!!!!

Count me in as one who finds this adorable as well. And, I say this as a mother who sent her daughter to preschool today in a purple sundress with pink cowboy boots, because that is just what she HAD to wear.

So, how do you think his book will do in terms of sales ?

Hmm, ya know the literary industry can be a cruel mistress. And, I imagine you have to sell a whole hell of a lot of books to recoup a $750,000 advance. But, I don’t know what is considered a success in that business. And, I have no idea whether the book would be of interest to those outside of his core fan base. So, perhaps the easy guess is that he’ll sell close to the same number of books as he did CD’s. Is that good? I have no idea.

  • jpfan

Oh no, not more whose idol has more $, sells more, is better, etc. Well my idol has the biggest..nevermind.

  • jpfan

  • griz

Well my idol has the biggest..nevermind.

    Let’s stop talking about Taylor – :devil_tb:

  • jenniferg72

Spenser – LOL! I bet your daughter looked adorable as well!

  • SpenserJ

Spenser – LOL! I bet your daughter looked adorable as well!

She is pretty darn cute. I just do not have the time or the energy to wage war with a 3 year old at 9:00 a.m. over fashion choices. So, I just threw her sneakers in the bag for playground time and hoped for the best.

  • tinawina

Oh for goodness sakes, what’s to debate? Chris has sold a million trillion bazillion records and is gonna sell more, so what could there POSSIBLY be to argue about at this point? LOL! He’s a hit, it’s established. Time to accept that and move on. Yikes. And I loves me some Taylor.

Now, who on in this year’s crop could do the same thing? I see no one. Maybe Blake. The thing is, Blake passes for “hip” within the context of AI but is he really all that hip in the real marketplace? I dunno. I think Gina, oddly enough, could be pretty viable in today’s market. The pop-rock thing is making a comeback big time, and she could fit in nicely because with the right styling, she’s can be cute enough to be relatable but not intimidating. Melinda is a throwback… she could sell a lot of records but not at Top 40. I dunno about Jordin. She has the charisma and looks but who is she musically? Lakisha was made for dance music. Whatever. That’s a separate issue from who should win AI though.

  • mags

It is moving towards my idol is better than yours unless your talking about Billie Idol.(I know bad joke)

I will comapare years that I have seen The first and second have shown up on AI besides just the finale but each year is diferent like last year was a diverse group of good singers and the year before something else. Who knows what will happen.next…..

I think I agree w/ Squishy last year Danial Powder was on the show preforming live the boot song so it figured so will the band “Daughtry”. So who really knows what will happen just going from what I hav seeen in the past..Please not on w/ John Bon Jovi no one should be compared to him…This year still no favorite or moved by anyone yet.
    Your old gizmo signing off

    Payton Manning looking good still

  • Little Boy Blue

If the comparison is being made between Daughtry and Daniel Powter based on the boot song, shouldnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t it be a digital single – not CD, LBB? DP didnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t sell millions of CDs but he sold about 2 million single downloads. Or are you speaking currently in general terms?

My estimated ( rough calculation ) figures were :

    A) Based on Daughtry’s PHYSICAL ALBUM SALES alone ( based on Soundscan numbers ).

    B) Based on the estimate that an artist supposedly makes after all deductions for cost, royalties and commissions have been made on the album ( courtesy of info provided for us in the past by Nevada ).

So I came out based on that with a figure of close to a million bucks ( actually $960,000 ).

That figure does NOT include downloads of Daughtry’s singles, which I have to admit does not equal Powter’s numbers.

That figure also does not include DIGITAL DOWNLOADS of Daughtry’s albums.

That figure also does not include what he gets from concerts.

So, the $960,000 is actually a very conservative figure.

Therefore, the bald rocker is a millionaire by my estimate.

  • squishy

I never thought of Gina as being viable in today’s market until her performance last night. She actually has a better voice if she controls it.

Her performance last night made me take another look at her :ponder_tb:

I thought with Taylor it is all about the music, not the money. And Daughtry appearing with BonJovi, well enough said.

Let’s be realistic here. They guy has to pay the bills and pay those who work for him. Plus, there is nothing wrong with living well doing what you’ve been passionately pursuing since your youth..We should all be so luck..

We should be all applauding these contestants from Season Five. They have proven to the world what we have already felt. The season produced very different singers who appeal to different groups of people. So far every singer/artist have sold over the 100,000 cds. I’m including Elliot because I’m sure he will cross that threshold by next week. Way to go for these young men and women. I hope that Bucky and whomever drop a cd will follow.

As we all said last year, Anyone of those young men and women could have won the title and now they are proving that they can sell cds.

Maybe TPTB at AI will get the message and start looking for singers next seasons and not just marketing tools for their show..

Jeannie Holleman, the author of “Clay It Forward: The Unauthorized Biography” is suing Clay Aiken for emotional and punitive damages.
She says Aiken, his family and associates ruined the sales of her book by denying the truth of the book and saying she is not a family friend.

Constantine Maroulis Returns to the Tube

It was a rocker shocker when CONSTANTINE MAROULIS was voted off of “American Idol,” but now the gorgeous Greek music maker is returning to the tube this summer as a cast member of “The Bold and the Beautiful,” TV Guide reports.

“We’re going to blur reality à   la ‘Entourage’ and have Constantine play a fictional version of himself,” “B&B” Executive Producer BRAD BELL told the magazine.

Look for Maroulis to be involved in the Phoebe/Rick storyline — he will initially join the soap as a possible music producer for Phoebe.

In the short run, his presence makes for spirited debate, but if Sanjaya Malakar, 17, is standing in the winner’s circle, “it would destroy credibility the show’s built up in the past five seasons,” music consultant Tom Vickers says. “Instead of 30 million viewers a week, it might draw 20 million.”

New ‘American Idol’ superstar: Go, Sanjaya! Go!

…Back off, Sanjaya-bashers! “American Idol’s” newest superstar is really a master showman.

Who cares if he can’t sing? Sanjaya’s got another talent and knows how to sell it. Camp is one of the great traditions of showbiz and à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’ come on! à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’ it takes a genius to know how to pull it off. As those sassy strippers in the classic Broadway musical “Gypsy” say, “Ya gotta bump it with a trumpet, honey!”

You can’t just do it a little. You’ve gotta go screaming (or screeching) over the top. The next time you see a photo of Sanjaya’s pony Mohawk, think of Dame Edna’s purple hair, or that rat’s nest on Tiny Tim’s head. Both of those guys have equally ghastly singing chops. (Uh-oh. You didn’t know Dame Edna was a guy? Sorry!)

But it ain’t about the singing. It’s about putting on a show! And that spunky, little 17-year-old Liberace wannabe knows what he’s doing and is doing it with shrewd surrender and abandon…

Hmm, ya know the literary industry can be a cruel mistress. And, I imagine you have to sell a whole hell of a lot of books to recoup a $750,000 advance.

I agree that it will take a lot of books to recoup the advance, but books can be published much, much less expensively than CDs. A much larger % of the selling price is profit because you don’t have to pay musicians, songwriters and a studio.

Publishing a book has become very inexpensive. I have 2 friends who wrote novels and had them published by one of the “do it yourself” publishing companies. The publishing company charged them $300 to publish the book and list it on Amazon and Barnes & Noble. When people order the book online, the publishing prints a copy of the book and ships it to the customer. The books look professional so most people don’t realize that they are printed that easily.

    American Idol – Week 11

It was hard to put your finger on what made last night’s “American Idol” such an unsatisfying hour (or to be more precise, an hour and seven minutes). It could have been that this was the first week the show cut back from two hour episodes, which would account for the ungainly pacing, including the award show-like moment when the band cut off Simon Cowell in mid-sentence (“this isn’t the Oscars,” he protested)…

Songs for Idols: Just don’t let Sanjaya sing any of them

Here’s some guy’s list of songs that should be sung on American Idol. The suggested artists are Journey, the Pretenders (other than “I’ll Stand By You,” which Gina sang so very well last night), Boston, Poison, Heart, and Ted Leo and the Pharmacists. Ted Leo? Really? Oh, I guess that was a joke….

Blake is in the à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Daughtry Zoneà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ in more ways than one. And they both got credit for reinventing the song, when actually they simply copied someone else.

At least I liked Blake/311′s version of Love Song. The Walk The Line cover sucks, IMO.

t2, Yes, Phil does have a really great voice. I would even say that he probably is the most talented vocally out of all the guys. But he lacks the whole package. His looks are kinda scary, his obsession with being accepting is getting on my nerves and he just doesn’t have really great stage presense. And in terms of AI, which is pretty much a popularity contest, Phil is the guy from high school that had a decent amount of friends, had a steady girlfriend and never did anything worth noticing. While he’s in the company of Chris R who’s like the popular football guy every girl likes. Blake, the hip dude who’s friends with everyone, and Sligh, the class clown who also is liked by everyone. And Sanjaya… well I can’t really place him because he’s still in high school and I bet his the stylish gay kid who’s friends with all the girls.

I didn’t see this article on the blog yet, LisaB. Don’t want to step on your toes. =)

Why I Voted For ‘American Idol’

Sure, “Idol” says they get roughly 30 million votes per week (voting is free). But because of the way the voting process is set up (more on that later), it’s mostly from diehard fans who “power vote,” over and over again. They’re the reason why the tone-deaf Sanjaya Malakar is still in the race, while the lovely Stephanie Edwardsà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’ one of my top four favorite contestants of the yearà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’ had to pack up her bags last week, with over two months of “Idol” left to go. How can we prevent such a catastrophe from happening again?

    http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/17843431/site/newsweek/

  • longsong

I actually didn’t think Stephanie was that great, especially her last performance. She deserved to go.

  • Easy

    Easy,

If you are not a fan of Chris Daughtry why did you buy his CD? I always thought was really strange.

    Extreme fanatic,

Because I liked a few of the harder songs he did on AI and I also liked the Absent Element CD I purchased off of ebay.

How was I supposed to know his Daughtry debut would be complete shat unless I listened to it first?

  • sammy

Is anybody here really a Sanjaya fan? Kid is so not good.

  • beesims

Afan, that was the perfect analogy for why Phil will not win idol. I would go one step further and guess that he was a Mathelete or in the AV club.

  • Tony

    Kirsten:

    1. YAMIN*ELLIOTT ELLIOTT YAMIN 90439 Total: 90511

This means that he was the top selling independent artist last week and that there were 72 street violations (albums sold last week).

So AI gets another #1 :cool1_tb:

So far, Elliott has 2 No. 1s: #1 on the Bubbling Under Hot 100 chart (with “Moody’s Mood for Love”) and #1 on the Independent Albums chart

  • http://inkdbylilyanna.com carolina

Late to the game but I have to say — I didn’t realize it was politically Correct to blatantly lie, knowing of course that people will also find out you lied.

I thought lying was to tell an untruth and pray you don’t get caught! duh.

  • squishy

    Easy,

What songs on the Absent Element CD are your favorites? What Chris Daughtry performances on American Idol did you enjoy?

  • AFan

I’m going to apply my high school analogy for the girls

Lakisha’s the girl that goes to a mostly black high school in a city. She’s got a tight knit group of girlfriends and I bet she works at walgreens. She’s the girl that chases after the wrong guys and keeps getting hurt.
Melinda’s the black girl in a mostly white highschool. She’s a straight A student and probably involved with theatre. She knocks it out of the park every year when she sings Whitney Houston at the school Variety Show.
Jordin is like the nice girl who plays sports and has a lot of friends but isn’t part of any main group. She also gets good grades. I bet she’s one of the girls who’s caring and is involved with bake sales and food drives.
Haley seems like kind of a nerdy girl to me. She doesn’t
have that many friends and is one of those girls who always has a boyfriend and uses most of her spare time to hang out with him. She, like Phil, is just a normal person that isn’t hated but nobody really knows who she is.
Gina is definitely the rebel who smokes cigarettes in the bathroom and talks shit about all the pretty popular girls. But she’s one of the girls who isn’t a total deadbeat and does fairly well in school. Her favorite thing to do outside of school is go to concerts with her friends and drink beer at house parties.

, while I agree that Phil isn’t going to win AI (and might be a geek at heart), I definitely think that he can make a good living singing. So I hope he is keeping everyone’s phone number. If Peter Noone (who proved to be completely snarky) and Gwen Stefani were so impressed, maybe there’s hope.

I don’t think this season is boring because of the talent–there’s talent in this group. I think this season is boring because no one feels they need to win to succeed. When “winning” was presented as the only way to get a true benefit from AI, the season was a lot more exciting (Season 2 is the best example of this)

yes! kat finally gets a increase in sales, a ten percent one at that

She has a 60% increase on digital downloads of her single and 10% increase on the sales of her album, she is the only idol this week to increase. Congrats Kat!!!

And Congrats to all the other talented idols from Season 5.

    à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“uniqueà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ in AI-speak = à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“genericà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬

    Ità ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s a bit like 1984à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s twospeak, if anyoneà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s read it.. when a word means its opposite.

Hi, sorry but that would be NEWspeak, not twospeak. In addition, the words in the newspeak dictionary did not in any way mean the opposite of their original meaning. It was designed to simplify the current language to limit any and all free thought and expression.

I agree 1000%. In the past the winner got fame, fortune and the rest got obscurity (for the most part.) Season 5 changed that. Now they think being on the show will already make them winners. It makes them very timid, cautious performers (see Chris S.) The whole point of the show is gone when winning means carp. Hopefully, this year’s bootees go unsigned or the show is just updated variety show kareoke with no payoff (which is what it feels like now.)

  • Easy

    Easy,

What songs on the Absent Element CD are your favorites? What Chris Daughtry performances on American Idol did you enjoy?

If I remember correctly, the song “Breakdown” was the standout on that CD. The first song. But I liked the entire thing.

As for AI, of course Fuel week, Wanted Dead Or Alive, I Dare You and probably my favorite performance is one that most ripped him for and that was Queen week when he sang Innuendo. While others criticized his song choice, I thought it was outstanding for his power vocals.

I don’t hate Chris Daughtry. I hate Daughtry. The band. Or at least the first album. Chris should be doing harder stuff. I should leave a Chris Daughtry concert feeling like I saw Pantera reincarnate.

  • jocee

I think If Chris S. gets the boot tonight it will be so fucking hilarious that after trying to insult Chris Daughtry and his fanbase by calling him a cock rocker, it will be Daughtry’s song, Home that will be playing as he takes his fugly, off beat ass, off the stage. Maybe he can go play some pocket pool to sooth himself.

  • radname

  • squishy

    Easy,

That’s cool you liked the Absent Element CD. I enjoy the DAUGHTRY CD but I agree that Chris has the ability to do a lot harder stuff. As we all know the Idols who are signed can only do what TPTB want them to thus Chris had to do a Nickelback-style CD for that is what they signed him for. I bet if Chris could choose his CD would have been a lot harder.

A lot of negative stuff towards my favorites today but I’ll ignore it. :rolleyes_tb:

Dial Idol hasn’t been all that accurate lately so doubt Chris S is the one going home. Neither Stephanie or Brandon were on the bottom. My best guess is that it will be Haley but am hoping it’s Sanjaya.

  • Former_AI_Junkie

Personal bottom 3: Chris Slug (time to go home you fake cocky bastard), Phil (time to go home you boring bastard), and Lakisha (time go home you generic bitch).

Moley gets to stick around due to her lovely legs.

Actual non-rigged B3: B3 Chris Slug, Haley, Phil goes home.

If Phil goes home and they rig 1 or 2 of the other 2 (seems that they do that sometimes), replace Haley with Jordin or Blake.

  • Former_AI_Junkie

    bean99,

DialIdol has only gotten it wrong once putting Sanjaya in the B3 when he was safe on the show. The order doesn’t matter, since the margins of error mean anyone in orange could be going home.

    Red = B3.
    Orange = safe/B3.
    Blue = Safe.

Orwell wrote the book in english and explains the language in detail in his appendix.

The word doublespeak is not actually mentioned in the work. Newspeak and Doublethink, however are.

I think I’ll take his word for it thanks.

    Hezzer,

Check my examples. I’m sure they still carry the same meaning in English.

I am thinking Blake will definitely be the most successful of all the Season 6 Idols regardless if he wins or not.

He has a great recording VOICE. I really have enjoyed all of his downloads. He sounds awesome. He has a smooth cool voice, he reminds a bit Of Adam Levine and his look to Sting.

By the way Blake’s Top 10 erformance IMO was very nice. Even though it was more subdued than others, he proved he is one heck of a contender.

I don’t know why people criticize his voice, I personally love it!

Go TEAM PLAID! GO BLAKE! He looked really HOT last night too. Loved the haircut!

Easy – that was my fave performance of his, too – for the vocals, and for the passionate intensity of it.

  • Chris58

Saw a really interesting interview tonight with Wayne Newton. (God–does ANYBODY on this blog remember him? Besides me?) I saw him in Vegas in 1966 when I was 17. When I found out we were going to see “little Wayne Newton of Danke Shane fame” I almost puked! Well–HE WAS AMAZING! He started Vegas in 1953 and has been the biggest drawing act ever since!

Anyway–my point. He was talking about the recording artists of today and how so many are “flash in the pan” artists. Said one had to be able to step out on a stage and sing those recorded songs “live” and pull it off. Said it was about longevity–not random radio hits. Puta huge value to the “live” performance. I swear I don’t the man ever had but one big hit!!!

Griz–looks like our Taylor continues to be EXACTLY where he needs to be and has the absolute correct goal! Love that man–WHOOOOOOOOOO!

jadore–I do not care for Chris…never have and never will. However, I completely agree. Now, did I like the song–not! But–I felt his performance of Innuendo was absolutely brilliant. It was clear the song was hard as hell to sing and he nailed it! Just another episode where I thought the judges got it totally wrong! (They are just jerks! I think Chris’ biggest mistake was stepping out of his comfort zone on the advice of the all-powerful “IDOL”! JMO)

  • Former_AI_Junkie

Shit, I just saw an episode of Hollywood Story about Wayne Newton. It’s funny, he sort of reminded me of Taylor- very musical, a dedicated performer, and with a very personal approach to music. Both are also totally unfashionable and cater to a non-contemporary crowd. Wayne has LOTS more money, though.

Edited to say I wrote the above before I read the rest of your post. Chris58.. freaky.

I’m a Taylor fan too. That’s just a fact, though (at least for now).

  • Former_AI_Junkie

I finally realized what I hate about Lakisha- she has no personality. She sings with no emphasis, no intent. LakishaBot.

  • madaboutu

Former AIJ……..when we talk about Taylor not selling well among kids and teens, that may be true because of his mature looks. However……as a reviewer said last week, it will just take the right song! A song with a good hook works everytime for anyone.

  • cateye

I finally realized what I hate about Lakisha- she has no personality. She sings with no emphasis, no intent. LakishaBot.

It’s not so much her personality that has lost me, but her inability to branch out….maybe that IS because she’s a Bot….I can’t EVEN imagine her singing country, or just plain ole pop….I can, however, hear her whaling out a Broadway show tune….which is not necessarily a bad thang…

Taylor’s book will be bought by the Soul Patrol….and I think that’s just about it…being the bad Tay fan that I am, I probably won’t purchase it either!

    Boulder! Keep on chopping!

I think If Chris S. gets the boot tonight it will be so fucking hilarious that after trying to insult Chris Daughtry and his fanbase by calling him a cock rocker…

Hmmm, I always thought that was a fair assessment of little dà ¢’ž ¢’s music. After all, he did admit that little dà ¢’ž ¢’s album was more to his musical taste than Taylor’s album…and I have no idea how little dà ¢’ž ¢’s fans got dragged into this. I don’t recall them being mentioned at all in Sligh’s review.

I finally realized what I hate about Lakisha- she has no personality. She sings with no emphasis, no intent. LakishaBot.

I think you’ve hit the nail on the head. That’s exactly what I thought after last night’s performance. She sings incredibly well, but she doesn’t emote. On the other hand you have Melinda, who in addition to singing well, also emotes.

    Boulder, I heart you. :)

  • Former_AI_Junkie

Chris##, It’s not just his look- his roots are (admittedly) mainly from the ’60s-’80s, and he doesn’t like to compromise, either. I believe his CD suffered as a result of this. If he went as pop as TPTB wanted him to- he might’ve sold more copies; if he had been able to execute HIS vision for it- he’d have probably sold more and/or got critical acclaim for it.

  • madaboutu

Since Sanjaya is getting the buzz the past couple of weeks, would he be the biggest shock to go tonite? I doubt that will happen, but would it be more so than Chris S?

  • Former_AI_Junkie

Can anyone here give a good explanation to Chris Slug’s tempo problems? Could it be shortness of breath (I’m not kidding)?

  • Former_AI_Junkie

Chris Slug will be safe tonight due to last week’s de-pimping by the judges. He was off-beat (again), but he was pitch-perfect and strong as always. That lisp has to go, though. SO annoying.

  • madaboutu

Former AI…….since Chris has a band, it is highly unlikely this has been a problem before unless it was ignored, and just being picked up by professionals. Perhaps it is just nerves…… but normally, if you are a musician, that is not a problem you have.

  • Former_AI_Junkie

madaboutu, that didn’t answer my question.

On a different note, how hilarious was Sanjaya’s retalitation to Simon after his performance? I wasn’t sure he had balls before (literally), but I do now.

  • radname

    bye bye chris sligh

  • madaboutu

FAI……..only Chris S and/or a pro could answer the question you raised anyway. When he agreed that it has been a problem more than once, they need to find out why if he goes on.

Thank God we don’t have to listen to that lisp another week.

    Thuckth to be you, Chwith!

  • Former_AI_Junkie

Slug is gone! Goodbye oh fake one!

  • radname

I just don’t think Chris Sligh is a musician period. You can’t really explain having rhythm, i just know where the beat is because it’s internalized, i hardly ever read music or counted notes in my band at school (yes, i was a band nerd.) because i felt the music and just knew when i had to play, it’s kinda hard to explain. Also with a band made of 4 peices it’s a lot easier to speed up the tempo or slow it down as opposed to the orchestra and band that Ricky Minor does, although he does do a great job changing when the contestants change

  • jpfan

It’s clear that some of these constestant’s fanbase isn’t as strong as first preceived and they exist week by week. I thought Chris fanbase was much stronger. The only thing I really disliked about him was his obvious sucking up to the various fanbases and sites. That became a bit of a turn-off after awhile..

  • Tony

Good riddance to Chris. He thought he was smarter than the show, and was outlasted by the joke that is Sanjaya.

Who will Sanjaya take out next? :devil_tb: Hopefully someone other than Phil, Haley or Gina…because there’s no fun in that.

Not that I don’t think the album is good, it is just not as great as I thought it would be coming from Taylor. But, it is so very hard to find a hit tune. Taylor is new to recording. My money is on him having a really big hit album one of these days. Because when he has the right song – he’s pretty hard to beat.

“Elliott has entered the Billboard album charts at #3 and the independent album charts at #1, making him the highest new artist debut on an independent label in soundscan history.”

This is from AI official boards. P.S. I think Sanjaya opening for Chris was an early April Fool’s Joke. Just a guess.

    Â

Why am I in bold? I don’t want to be. Help.

Wait a minute, I’m I reading this right. Kat is opening up for Chris. Okay, who said she is not with AI anymore. Why would she be opening for Chris if she was not affilated with them in some capacity? Talk about differnce in audience. At least Kelly and Clay audience were similiar, but..

Someone left their bold tag open.

    Nevada,

RE: Estimated Daughtry earnings from album sales.

Sorry LBB, but your estimates are WAY off.

OK, so please set me straight. What did I miss ?

Paula, thanks for finding that Kat/Daughtry article. I just couldn’t remember where exactly I saw it.
So Daughtry is playing the Riverbend festival which is bluegrass and country. Are they crossing over?

  • madaboutu

Sexy………don’t forget that Kat and Chris are in Clive’s stable along with Taylor, Kellie and (Fantasia)?. I am sure they are trying to boost Kat’s sales by teaming her with Daughtry and get her feet wet on the concert tours again.

  • radname

Kat isn’t opening for Daughtry? just like Dashboard confessional isn’t opening for Daughtry, they’re all playing

  • Allen

As far as I have heard, the Kat and Chris thing is just one festival type thing that they are both appearing at. As far as I know the other two bands playing, Dashboard Confessional and Augustana aren’t playing any other dates with Kat or Chris either. It should be a fun show though for those going.

So, Sanjaya survives and does not even make bottom 3 ??

I wonder if Sanjaya is the one HELPING to prevent the ratings from dropping or is the one CAUSING the ratings to drop.

All we know is audience ratings are markedly DOWN from last season.

Compared to last season, the Tuesday performance shows are down about 3 million viewers, or 10 percent, through the first two weeks of the finals, Nielsen Media Research stats show.

    RE: Wayne Newton.

I heard him on the radio on the Glen Beck program while driving to my client’s office. I caught the last part of the interview.

Wayne said that the test of an artist’s musical ability is being able to sing without being masked by a whole lot of electronics and synthesizers covering your vocal limitations.

Wayne Newton says he knows that a lot of artists use electronics to make them sound better,

To curious Soul Patrolers and Interested Parties…

Here’s a thread discussing the age range of people attending Taylor Hicks’ concerts thus far :

    http://myidol.americanidol.com/boards/topic.aspx?topic_id=683380

It seems that the average age is between 30 to 40.

Paula, thanks for finding that Kat/Daughtry article. I just couldnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t remember where exactly I saw it.

I live near where the Starfest is being held, so it was easy for me to find information about it. It’s being held at the arena where the AI concerts are held — huge, and not personal whatsoever. I know I’m not planning on going to it.

get over it LBB. and Paula, weren’t you saying a while ago about such big venues Taylor plays compared to Daughtry? It’s a fair, it’s not going to be personal but hopefully it introduces kat and daughtry to new fans.
