2nd Update: I just saw the entire list of participants, and Carrie was not on the list. Jordin Sparks, Katharine McPhee and Randy Jackson were all on the list.

UPDATE:  CNN removed Carrie Underwood’s name from their report (It’s still in the sidebar) and other outlets do not have her on their lists, so I would say, at this point, her involvement it NOT confirmed.

The recording session for the remake of “We Are the World” is happening in Los Angeles tonight (Feb 1), and you can add Jordin Sparks and Carrie Underwood to the list of stars set to participate in the re-recording of the Michael Jackson classic for Haiti relief.

Jennifer Hudson and Katharine McPhee were previously confirmed for the event. Idol judge, Randy Jackson is also involved.

“We Are the World” is produced by Quincy Jones who also helmed the original back in 1985 with Michael Jackson. Idol music director, Rickey Minor is directing the remake, so I would not be surprised if there were even more Idols amongst the 100+ stars tapped for the single.

Jordin tweeted, “Being apart of the We Are The World remake is such an honor. So much talent together for a great cause. I will never forget tonight. <3″

Some of the big names involved in the effort: Barbra Streisand, Pink, Miley Cyrus, The Jonas Brothers, Fergie, Brian Wilson, Akon, wil.i.am, Tony Bennett, Rob Thomas, Jeff Bridges, Heart and more.

Via Entertainment Tonight and CNN.

If there are other Idol sightings at the recording, I’ll add them to this post…

It’s a nice gesture, but I really hate that song. I hated it the first time around. As far as fundraising songs, I always liked “Do They Know It’s Christmas” by Band Aid much better. I know it is a good cause, and they are going to put MJ in it somehow, but still, don’t like that song. Perhaps on ITUNES they can have an “in lieu of downloading song, you can make a donation here.” I think I would choose that.

  • islandgirljams

    why no Adam?
This shocks me, seeing how close he is to Ricky Minor.
If it is based on being established ,then I do understand ! I just hope this isn’t a diss :)

  • cookcricket

Awww, bummer no Kris since he’s probably on his way to Asia. I believe Ricky was always impressed by Kris (the quiet storm) and would have loved to have had him on board.

    That’s okay though, it’s a good cause.

are the artists gonna sing one word each?

If they do it anything like the original, certain artists will have featured lines and duets and the others will be chorus.

I agree that the song is kind of sucky, but it’s for a good cause as was the original. This group can’t even touch the star power of that one.

cookcricket, thanks for the link to Carrie’s ‘Temporary Home’ video. That was so beautiful and touching.

Now I’m sitting here crying after the “Temporary Home” video. Wonderful. I wish that girl all kinds of blessings and happiness in her marriage, and pray she doesn’t change. Thanks for posting it!

    Katharine McPhee? Okay, fine ………..

  • tierbee

I don’t think not being asked is a snub, they ask who they want. If they want Katharine McPhee, why not? She has a lovely voice. She certainly sings better than fricking Miley Cyrus.

I think this is the order of singing, but don’t quote me (on the lyrics either). If lyrics can’t be shown, please delete.

    Leona Lewis
When the day is long and the night, the night is yours alone,
    Rod Stewart
When you’re sure you’ve had enough of this life, well hang on
    Mariah Carey
Don’t let yourself go, ‘cause everybody cries and everybody hurts sometimes
    Cheryl Cole
    Sometimes everything is wrong.
    Mika
Now it’s time to sing along
    Michael Buble
When your day is night alone,
    Joe McElderry
    Hold on, hold on
    Miley Cyrus
If you feel like letting go
    James Blunt
If you think you’ve had too much of this life, well hang on..
    Gary Barlow (Take That)
    ‘Cause everybody hurts..
    Mark Owen (Take That)
    Take comfort in your friends
    Gary Barlow (Take That)
    Everybody hurts..
    Jon Bon Jovi
Don’t throw your hand oh no
    James Morrison
    Don’t throw your hand
    Alexandra Burke and James Morrison
If you feel like you’re alone… no, no, no, you are not alone
    Susan Boyle
If you’re on your own in this life, the days and nights are long
    Aston Merrygold (JLS)
When you think you’ve had too much of this life…
    Marvin Humes (JLS)
    To hang on
    Shane Filan (Westlife)
    Well, everybody hurts sometimes…
    Mark Feehily (Westlife)
    Everybody cries
Kylie Minogue and Robbie Williams (each)
    And everybody hurts sometimes
The rest- Robbie & Kylie mainly, not sure, I think with ad-libs from others

I would definetely prefer that arrangement !
I also love Carrie’s new video. I like how her song subjects smile at her when they see her. It’s kind of like when you’re going through something difficult in your own life, you tend to be more in tune than usual
to others who are as well.

  • ggdoorsfan

it would be nice to see this effort recapture lightning in a bottle like the original did in ’85. with quincy jones leading the way again there’s no doubt it will be a stellar production from top to bottom, because that’s how he rolls. kudos to the idol alums participating, and all lending their time and voices for this ongoing cause of relief in haiti.

  • Belle

Let me know if Adam is on board

With Lionel Ritchie at the helm, I don’t think there is much chance of Adam being involved.

thank you for posting it, I think it is a beautiful recording, everyones voice is so distinct, very well done imo.

I hope the this song and We are the world are a success and raise a lot of money for Haiti, that is what I think is important here. I am watching “the doctors show” on the CBS right now, the doctors are in Haiti and it is freaking heartbreaking to see human beings go through such suffering. They have nothing, no medical supplies, no water or food, and any kind of effort to help, whether it is trough donating money or time is great.

  • http://kristentheyellowlab.blogspot.com/ Zsus

Not to be rude, but in that picture, Barbara Streisand and Celine Dion have gigantic heads.

Anyway, it’s a nice gesture. I’m sure it will raise money. The first one was pretty damn special, though. I remember when all the radio stations in the country played it at the exact same time.

  • OnePlusSix

Like others, I feel it’s a good cause but sometimes overplayed. Also, I feel the list of singers is picked to get a wide range of different fan bases and, hence, the actual purchase numbers. Just an opinion.

  • tiger92

I’m for anything that will help raise money for Haiti! I’m with you on the first WATW. I don’t think you can recreate a moment.

  • http://kristentheyellowlab.blogspot.com/ Zsus

Also, I feel the list of singers is picked to get a wide range of different fan bases and, hence, the actual purchase numbers. Just an opinion.

Well, with the original WATW, it was the hottest, biggest music stars out there at the time. This seems to be a strange mish-mash of has-beens, newbies, and WTFs. People will buy it because it’s for a good cause. But, the thing about the original WATW is that it was performed by stars who were already so big, they didn’t NEED the publicity. Quincy made a phone call, and they said, “We’re in.” They had no idea at the time how big the whole thing was going to be. They didn’t do it to jump-start their careers or because they had albums to promote. They were already huge. This time around, the list reeks of label/management efforts to get their artists on the roster. I mean, you can’t compare Michael Jackson, Springsteen, and Bono to Bieber, McPHee, and Sparks. But, whatever. It will make money. But, it’s neither historic nor inspiring.

  • JudyL

Zsus, sad to say, I totally agree. Loved the original WATW and hope this one will make money but I wonder if the big names would even have participated if they had known the outcome.

Is this an actual picture because it looks very strange to me?

Not to anger McPhee fans, but she must have the world’s best press agent because she manages to get included on every high profile gig there is.

  • Suzanne

Not to anger McPhee fans, but she must have the world’s best press agent because she manages to get included on every high profile gig there is.

I know. It’s incredible. She sang at that event in honor of Lionel Richie recently. Maybe the deal was made there.

She’s a fine singer, but there are hundreds of singers whose higher professional profile would bring in more sales in support of this cause. This isn’t a single to reward the singers for being great singers–it’s to benefit the victims in Haiti. Every singer has to be someone who will attract a buyer who wouldn’t otherwise buy. Maybe Katharine McPhee has an audience who would only buy because her voice is there?

Gee, when Michael Buble comes on, he sounds so much clearer and stronger than everyone else. Same with Robbie Williams toward the end. Such clear, distinct voices.

With the power of Susan Boyle and Simon Cowell, it probably will.

This week, JEDWARD released their first single and with a little luck, they will be #1. They are only 24 copies behind owl City (Fireflies).

Boys tweeted they are going to appear on Teen Choice Awards show in LA.

Allowing Justin Beiber to breath the same air as Barbra Streisand is pretty much a mortal sin in my book, but as long as Beiber’s screaming tweens buy the song in droves I’ll overlook it.

I also don’t think this will become as big as the first WATW. I hope it does well enough to help Haiti but the original WATW was the first major charity single and it took on a life of it’s own to the point that any retrospective of pop culture from the 1980′s invariably mentions it. There’s no way the second version will capture people the same way, too much has changed since then. It’s a different world now.

ETA: Okay, in terms of sales I guess he is. But you can’t say the same for Kat.

  • Suzanne

Wow. I can’t get over how connected Katherine McPhee must be. No hit records, no hit singles, and she’s there. So connected.

  • dante

WTF? Kat is on this list and Adam Lambert is not? What a joke…… or maybe she slept with someone…… she is the only idol I strongly dislike and she sure as H*LL didn’t do anything to deserve this – won’t be buying it and I LOVE the original.

  • Niall

Kat is on this list and Adam Lambert is not? What a joke…… or maybe she slept with someone…… she is the only idol I strongly dislike and she sure as H*LL didn’t do anything to deserve this – won’t be buying it

It’s not about Katharine being connected or Adam not being part of it, or about any of the celebs. It’s about helping people who have suffered a real tragedy that far exceeds the tragedy some fan groups seem to be experiencing upon seeing their fave isn’t part of it.

There’s no “deserve” here, anybody who wanted to be part of this and had the connections to do it should be applauded.

  • Tess

Seems like people are thinking that this remake of a song for charity is the biggest gig in town and not being there is a reflection of a singer’s popularity and status. Alrighty then….that’s kind of a stretch…but whatever. These are people who happen to be around and probably know someone who knows someone and is showing up for the song. (Kat’s Dad is a producer, right?).

There have been and are ways for the famous to support a good cause…and this is a nice one but far from the cream of the crop. Kudos to those who are performing and hopefully the song will sound good. It’s inspiring “every disaster” to go back and watch the original…but the song is pretty dated, now.

  • dante

Not that it matters… but I don’t consider myself part of any “fangroup” as I love many many idols (just happen to have Adam’s pic in my avatar as he is the most recent)…..and…. I don’t think this song is the biggest gig in town by any means either……I just overreacted because I was really excited about this remake and I don’t like Kat or think she is a good singer…..but in the scheme of life I am not going to waste time thinking about this….I donated money for Haiti so I don’t feel guilty not buying this single.

  • lrt

I don’t get why they are covering We Are the World – trying to recapture the magic of the original just isn’t going to happen. They really should have tried to have a new song written instead.

  • JudyL

Everybody wants this remake to raise funds for Haiti, the more money the better but I do think it is the highest profile gig in town right now. Sounds bad to put in the way but look at all the publicity it is getting. I think the 1985 recording was more organically conceived and probably had few managers and publicists involved…….just someone had the idea, calls were made and a very successful record made.

If the facts I can find are correct, there were a total of 45 artists on the original and the 21 soloists were very, very high profile. The number of people on the Haiti record has risen to 85, I read, which in my mind dilutes the contribution of the high profile performers. The idea is to raise money, not to give publicity to lots of people and I unfortunately think that is what part of this is and that bothers me a little.

Also, none of the artists on the original were asked to participate. I know it was a long time ago but lots of us remember them and I think it would have been nice to hear some of their voices.

    Quote:
Josh Groban, flush from doing his high-flying solo, said: “I can only hope this can have the impact the original has had”.

The important thing is raising money, so it really would be nice if it does have some impact. Raising money and using it wisely, and that is something they have pledged to do with whatever is raised.

  • Grammie Kari

I know it is a good cause, and they are going to put MJ in it somehow, but still, don’t like that song.

From my understanding, there were bodies of green stockings placed in the group. Later, they will be fillling in someone like Janet Jackson to do Michael’s part. Some how his children will be involved. Now, the children not being there is understandable, but we all know Janet was not there. I am wondering about the finished product.

There’s no way the second version will capture people the same way, too much has changed since then. It’s a different world now.

You are absolutely correct. Technology is part of it. MTV was a focal point of distribution and display. Now, we have the Internet and iTunes and it does seem less personal. However, having the Olympics showcase the sing will certainly help.

  • Grammie Kari

    1985 WE ARE THE WORLD

  • dreyraglin

It so funny how people want to throw in hate toqards them doing this because their favs (particularly Adam) isn’t apart of this yet if he was people will be calling this the best thing in the world if he was. Seriously poeple it’s for a cause not about who is apart of it. I don’t think it was mis match at all about the people they got to be apart. Pretty recognizable names in this if you ask me that will be getting people to buy. Jennifer Hudson, Kanye West, Lil Wayne, Usher, Will i Am, Gladys Knight, Barbra Streisand, Celine Dion, Natalie Cole I mean star power doesn’t get any bigger. People sure get in a tizzy here when the Golden Child Adam isn’t apart of something lol
