Watch the Walmart Shareholders Meeting 2012. Jessica Sanchez hinted yesterday on twitter that she was flying off to someplace special.

The American Idol winner always performs at the annual meeting, but with Phillip Phillips getting ready for kidney surgery, it’s probably up to Jessica to take his place.

The meeting began at 7 pm CDT and will end at 11 CDT. Jessica will probably appear about halfway through, but don’t hold me to that.

Host, Justin Timberlake,  just took the stage. Count on other celebrity sightings as well!

ETA: The Zac Brown Band performed, as did Take 6 and Lionel Richie.  Taylor Swift did a bit with host Justin Timberlake.  She performed, but her record label blacked it out from streaming. Celine Dion closed out the meeting.

UPDATE: There were NO Idols at the big Friday shareholders meeting this year! That’s a first for me since I began covering Idol in 2006.  Taylor Hicks, Jordin Sparks, David Cook, Kris Allen, Lee DeWyze and Scotty McCreery ALL performed at the Walmart Shareholder’s meeting the year they took the crown.   Jennifer Hudson performed as well, I believe in 2007.

Carrie Underwood and Steven Tyler performed separate concerts for shareholders earlier in the week.

I don’t know where Jessica was flying off to, but she’s tweeting about shopping this morning. Ha.

    YAY for Jessica!

She’s doing all the winners work yet P2 gets the praise.

  • Anonymous

I think get Jessica gets paid for all her gigs so I’m  sure she’s happy for the work. Although yet it’s amazing how well P2 is doing.

  • http://profile.yahoo.com/OMRZFFPAXIQ4X7GNJ3FZNFMMCU jen

Good for Jessica. She may not be the winner, but she now has more media exposure than Phillip. She should take advantage of this. In a good way, that is.

  • Anonymous

She deserves the exposure. And I’m glad she’s getting it.

  • Anonymous

Good for her!!!!! Very happy for Jessica.

  • Anonymous

Not so sure if she is getting paid. I think its part of their post idol contract that they’d have several gigs lined up. It’s only within the actual tour in itself wherein these kids get the bucks. Again, I’m not sure.

As for P2..if memory serves me right, all these day time talk show appearances by Jessica also showcased P2 in several clips so he still gets the exposure..plus you’ve got TMZ and other blogs flooding the net with the latest in P2′s medical frenzy and raves about his current single making it big on the itunes chart..so yeah, he still is very well in the loop..

  • iFoundIt

HOME is Top #5 on ITunes and Phillip’s Idol compilation album is #3.  Still very strong showing considering he has been out of the public eye.

He tweeted that he had a good writing session yesterday.  I am sure the wheels are in motion regarding his album.

  • Anonymous

Last I heard over the years is that they do get paid for attending this event just like the  Disney stuff they do. I think the figure that has been floating around is 100-150K.

This could work out well for both of them. Jessica gets a little more exposure and unexpected money, Phillip gets time to actually put into writing as opposed to running around fulfilling all these winner obligations that don’t really do anything to advance an alt rock dude’s career. Its a win/win.

  • Anonymous

The New York Times reported that Walmart pays the winner $100,000 for the appearance.

I’m sure P2 thinks it’s great he doesn’t have to do all this media and can focus on being an “artist”; but being out of the spotlight for this extended period of time will come back to bite him in the ass eventually.

Jessica is getting to perform in front of fresh eyes at each one of these appearances and potentially winning new fans.  This will certainly help her in the long run.

I agree.  It’s almost like an unanticipated blessing for Jessica.   It’s great that she got this opportunity.  Lauren got a similar break like this last year with a Tonight Show appearance when Scotty had to fly back to Garner to take his AP exam.  I guess the way to look at it is that everything happens for a reason.  I’m sure the crowd will love Jessica.  I bet she will be a big hit with the crowd.

  • http://twitter.com/tinawinabina Tinawina

You know, I don’t think it will hurt P2 at all. He’ll be on tour shortly and he’ll do media then. Plus, his long term future depends HEAVILY on him writing good songs himself, which will take time and focus. Holding the Idol audience’s attention should not be his main concern right now IMO. He already has them. He needs to worry about having something good to sell to the rest of the world so they will bother paying attention to him when the time comes.

  • http://twitter.com/CanadianLady2 CanadianLady

I have no idea why Phillip would think this is great. He has serious kidney problems. He had to stop to look after it.

I disagree, because Phillip continues to sell. And that’s what’s going to matter to TPTB. And it’s not like he wants to skip the promos.

Jessica is doing these promos, but she doesn’t have a song to promote. And she still doesn’t seem to be making strides with sales. She actually has more to prove, not only with her weak sales, but the fact that she doesn’t have a guaranteed contract for an album.

I wonder if Jessica will get that amount, or she will get paid less, considering she isn’t actually the winner?

  • Anonymous

Jessica needs to get acquainted with the non-idol audience. That I think is a better tactic than force it upon her to sell that cheesy ‘change nothing’ song which is such a travesty.

To be current and be fresh in peoples minds is better than beating a dead horse of an EP and in return get such negatude (negative + attitude) from critics and haters.

She’s got far to go and what she needs is to take her time in picking a song that would launch her career full speed. Don’t make it sound like she’s got a deadline to meet and has zero potential of making it. Expectations wise, she’s proven that even as a runner-up and low digital sales, she’s got that ‘it’ factor that non-idol viewers and the media seem to fawn over.

I said this before, I’m saying it again, “give the girl a break” she’s 16. What we can do is just wish she’d get the best team to make things happen for her. No other 16 year old in the music biz is busting their butts off as hard as she is. I think that alone is cause for applause. *Applause*

I saw on twitter that Philip had a radio interview with HAC station in Philadelphia today, so it seems like he is doing some press — he just isn’t traveling around the country to do it.

When is his operation? Did we ever get an update about that?

  • Anonymous

Did Philip say who he was writing with yesterday?

If he had done all this press, it would have prepared him for what is going to happen when he goes on the Idol tour, and then later when he is about to releases his own album. So he is missing an opportunity here, although it is much more important for him to get his health issues taken care of.

  • http://twitter.com/MissGolightly22 No Thanks

Yes, P2 is fortunate he’s got a good single going for him right now.  But I’m talking about long run issues.  My point wasn’t about whether or not TPTB are happy with him right now.  My point was about being out of the spotlight for too long and how that might affect things come this fall when it’s time to drop an album.

For example, now that his surgery has been postponed, will he be available for the pre-tour media blitz?  For each of the local pre-show press junkets?  The cumulative effects of these things will build up over time.  And unfortunately with Idol, it can end up being an “out of sight/out of mind” kind of thing.

Of course that could be washed away if he comes up with a kick ass album and he gets the right promo.  Or if the “Home” really takes off on radio.

ETA: Of course it’s more important that he take care of his health. I hope this surgery will mark the end of his kidney stone problems. I’m just getting Bo Bice flashbacks with his chronic health issues.

  • http://twitter.com/MissGolightly22 No Thanks

Since she’s essentially doing P2′s job, she should get paid accordingly.

  • Anonymous

Its like phillip didn’t even win!!  THIS IS GREAT! HAHA

  • Anonymous

Not having the immediate media tour is probably worse because the public is fickle unless you have a strong personality or great voice.  Comparing Adam and Kris, neither of which had a radio single after the show, the media tour really showcased Adam.  He had most of the buzz even during the tour and it showed in the record sales.

Jessica has a voice and a lot of people have seen and heard her by now.  I think she can only go up from here.  Josh has the performance skills and the voice.  That performance on Live with Kelly was pure gold.  Phillip has a hot ITunes single, but that alone isn’t enough.  He will have to find a way to really stand out during the tour interviews, especially if his single doesn’t get significant radio play.

Phillip’s problem on the tour is that he will play last; after Jessica’s power ballads and Joshua’s energy.  That will be like Kris playing after Adam.  One thing I remember when reading the reviews of the concerts is that most of them said, Kris’s performance was okay but it was too much of a mood swing after Adam’s performance and many people left before he took the stage.

  • http://www.etsy.com/shop/AdorablyHooked Gwen

30 more minutes.  Did she sing yet?

  • guinness 416

Personally I think being on the media tour would have been of enormous advantage to P2.  No offense to the guy, I like him, but he isn’t exactly the most scintillating or articulate of interviews (and neither are Sanchez or Ledet for that matter).  Nobody wants their favourite band or singer to turn into a shy, mumbling teen in front of an interviewer.  I think practice and ultimately getting better/more confident at speaking to media would stand to all of them when they get out there in the real world.

(And yes yes, I know the obvious – having functioning kidneys and being painless is more of an advantage though!)

  • Anonymous

    nvm

  • http://twitter.com/tinawinabina Tinawina

Eh. Phillip is wildly popular with this audience, they ain’t leaving before his set. And the reports about Kris were greatly exaggerated.

I know having a song playing on the radio over the summer is a huge advantage, but there have been many Idols that didn’t have that and still went on to do well in the fall. It’s a nice plus if you can manage it, but it is far from a requirement for success IMO.

  • idolstruck

“Phillip’s problem on the tour is that he will play last; after Jessica’s power ballads and Joshua’s energy.”

I think Phillip will do just fine. He played last in the Idol’s Top 2 & 3 performances and he ended up winning both nights.

I wish all these amazing young talents will have a blast in their tour!

So Jessica didn’t perform after all?

I read that Carrie performed – I think Tuesday night.  Aerosmith performed Wednesday night.  James was there Wednesday and Thursday, but I don’t know if it was to perform or just a meet & greet.  I don’t know about any other Idols.

  • justmefornow

He must have performed in some capacity. I find it hard to believe they’d fly him across the country for one day just for a meet & greet to sign autographs. Really?
That seems like an enormous waste of money on Walmart’s part.

  • http://www.etsy.com/shop/AdorablyHooked Gwen

Some things are just reserved for 1st place, I suppose.  Guess Wal-Mart saved themselves a little money.

True about James - if I find out anything more about what he was doing there I’ll post here.  Well I see Walmart didn’t send him their private jet to use this time like they did last time he did a corporate gig for them!  He tweeted pictures from a regular airplane this time.

  • Anonymous

I have to disagree.  After a night of being pounded by big voices  Philips set will likely be just what people need.  I know it is the opposite of how most shows are lined up in terms of build but it works with this particular group.

  • Anonymous

That was television.  If everyone who watched the show, went to a concert or bought a CD, then IDOL would have a lot more success stories.

  • Anonymous

It is a matter of personal taste; I like to leave a concert on high note.  Phillip wouldn’t do it for me.

  • Trina

Josh was flying somewhere too last night because there were multiple tweets from people and pics meeting him at an airport. I’m thinking he and Jessica both headed home.

  • http://twitter.com/MissGolightly22 No Thanks

It really depends on people’s tastes.  I know if I’m spending a nice chunk of change on a night out, I’d prefer to be energized with a lively performance.

P2′s style of music is more, chill at home, background sound to me.

  • Anonymous

Josh is performing at a free concert tomorrow afternoon in Lousiana.  Sorry, I don’t have the link, but it was posted by a local Louisana television station.

It looks like is was related to Cricket as one of the company’s vendors rather than part of the bigger Walmart corporate event.  There are separate events wrapped up in the overall corporate event.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_AGWO435FL6UN2ICRVTFLWRJZSA Lexie

I wasn’t really a big fan of anyone this season, but it is a shame no idols at the big meeting this year.  I know, last year, it was great for Scotty fans to keep up the momentum of an interview or an appearance almost constantly…to be honest, even with his going back to high school, there has been something, an announcement or interview or an appearance, almost every day.

While an artist can do well without these (and P2 had no choice), there’s no doubt it would have been best if he could have been there…

  • Larc

Not surprised that Taylor Swift’s performance was blocked from streaming.  If she was singing live, her manager probably didn’t want the world to be reminded how seriously pitch challenged she is.  She and her manager should both fall to their knees each night and thank God for Auto-Tune.  Except for that, neither of their bank balances would likely be nearly as large.  ;)

  • http://twitter.com/MissGolightly22 No Thanks

I wonder if no Idol winner at the Walmart meeting will affect store stocks and distribution this fall.  These kind of appearances usually help build relationships.

  • Anonymous

True, but he said he was doing a gig for Walmart, so it sounds like it was Walmart that brought him there, not Cricket.  There were also other fan pictures tweeted by college kids with James where he wasn’t sitting there in that Cricket booth (they were outside), so there may have been little events going on during the day.  The meeting was held at the University of Arkansas. But it doesn’t look like his band went this time, so he may have been involved in some other event for them and not performing this time.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_SYFK77IYLRQIVATQ2MJKSW2J7Y Pam

Wow. No idols this year.  Interesting.

  • justmefornow

Hey, if he gets to fly there on their dime and just sit, talk, and sign autographs instead of busting his ass on stage like he does with his band AND get paid for it, I say go for it.
    Easy money.

(Oh and like I said before, those plane “crushing heads” pics cracked me up. lol)

  • Anonymous

While an artist can do well without these (and P2 had no choice), there’s no doubt it would have been best if he could have been there…

I think the only benefit, other than the chance to make some contacts, is the big payday.  Phillip may lose some of those, but he gets to work on his album, which in the long run may be worth giving up the $100,000 payday, and the other $100-150K that he was going to get from Disney last week.

I’m assuming her special flight was to go back home. She tweeted a picture of her and her little brother playing XBOX and said “FINALLY” just a few minutes ago.

Well, none of us a really privy to how much schmoozing and hand greasing goes on at these events.  Or the extent of just HOW important it is.

But let us never forget it’s show BUSINESS.  There is no show if you can’t handle your business.

  • http://twitter.com/Quu3 Q3

Just based on the photo —

Looks like James Durbin was there with a vendor — Cricket (the wireless service) — as part of the  vendor show. The vendors bring in celebrities to the show similar to a trade show.

Cricket launched Muve Music http://www.mycricket.com/muve-music a mobile music service that is not yet sold in Wal-Mart stores. (Sold in Target, Best Buy, Dollar Stores, etc.)

  • http://twitter.com/eilonwya10 Eilonwy

I wonder if no Idol winner at the Walmart meeting will affect store stocks and distribution this fall.  These kind of appearances usually help build relationships.

Eh, lots of big companies have big-name entertainment at their sharedholders’ meetings, annual sales conference, or (for software companies) big developers’ conference. The singers and musicians are hired help — has nothing to do with future business decisions, as most of the companies hiring them aren’t in the music biz.

Any greasing of Walmart palms is done by the label and/or the label’s distribution company, to get prime rack position on the music displays. I really don’t envision any of the former Idols who played the Walmart shareholders’ meeting getting down and dirty with decision-makers over rack space.

  • http://twitter.com/MissGolightly22 No Thanks

I know the artists themselves aren’t negotiating distribution and rack space.  But having the celebs schmoozing the businessmen is a part of the process.  Schmoozing is a vital part of the entertainment business (and most businesses in general).

  • http://twitter.com/Quu3 Q3

Walmart does not stock or run their music departments — Anderson Music does that. Just like many stores do not own the jewelry department. So the Idols were there for other reasons. Most likely just as hired entertainment.

ETA: I think Phillip will do just fine. He has a somewhat distinctive style and he is really likable. And his music is selling — so his fans like it.

  • Anonymous

Well whatever James was doing there, he must have either gotten paid very well or his management felt it was very important for him to be there, otherwise I can’t see him giving up any of his precious time with his wife and son since he gets so little of it these days.  He was on tour since mid-April and leaves again for more shows soon – this is his tour break time for 3 weeks.

  • http://twitter.com/Quu3 Q3

I am certain James was well compensated or he would not be there.

  • Anonymous

Walmart does not stock or run their music departments — Anderson Music does that. Just like many stores do not own the jewelry department. So the Idols were there for other reasons. Most likely just as hired entertainment.

Whether they run the music department or not, a whole lot of artists have done things to kiss up to Walmart.  It’s still their stores, and nothing is going on in them without their permission.

  • http://twitter.com/eilonwya10 Eilonwy

Well, a whole lot of artists do Walmart Soundcheck as a PR opportunity, but looking over past features, they’re not picking these acts based on charm and good manners.

Q3 is, of course, correct that Anderson Merchanders handles the music merchandising for Walmart, and it’s pretty clear from Anderson’s site that it’s making the decisions with/for customers like Walmart, and the musician’s label/management have to negotiate with Anderson, not with Walmart.

That’s not really surprising: Walmart carries over 25,500 SKUs for music CDs. Even if only 20% are stocked in-store, that’s more than 5,000 SKUs. Walmart’s also known for its computerized inventory management systems.  This is a gigantic and highly automated enterprise: a couple minutes of schmoozing with a board member makes no difference to micro-decisions at the store level.

In any case, since Walmart is doing the exclusive Idol compilation CDs again this year — and a greater variety of them — it sure looks as if Walmart-Idol relations are just fine, and the people planning the shareholders’ meeting (who are probably in HR or IR, not involved in store decisions) just wanted to book different acts.

  • getaway1

With Phillip’s upcoming surgery, it’s probably difficult for him to be flying around country.

But he’s been L.A. all this time, not back home in Georgia. I doubt he’s just lounging around. I am sure there’s been meetings, discussions about his album, the tour, his record deal, lining up a band, etc.

After Wed’s announcement of his record sales, I can’t imagine Jimmy Iovine would not seize on the opprotunity.

Phillip could indeed be making important contacts of a different sort – producers, writers, other musicians in the industry.

  • http://twitter.com/KariannHart Kariann Hart

Phillip’s problem on the tour is that he will play last; after Jessica’s power ballads and Joshua’s energy.

Last year, the Idols sang out of sequence.  I cannot imagine the producers putting Jessica just before Phillip.  I would think she’d be in the first half, and return in the second (maybe with a duet).

I thought the line-up might start with Skylar because of her high energy and popularity.  I think they would save Joshua to make sure everyone is in their seat.  We’ll see what they will do.

  • iFoundIt

Phillip’s problem on the tour is that he will play last; after Jessica’s power ballads and Joshua’s energy.

Except that he’s really the only one from this season that is selling.  He is the only one that has what looks to be a huge song, that surely will close out the finale for each show. And he will probably be the only one with a band, which is always a crowd pleaser at concerts.

I doubt very much either Jessica or Josh can headline this tour, when they can’t even get people to spend $1.49 for their singles.

  • tucker davis

This probably won’t happen but…I wish they would just let him jam with a good band for a few minutes! I’m from ‘his neck of the woods’ and he really is that good jamming. Believe me, no one would leave!! He is extremely high energy just going from one song to another. It would be an exciting way to end the concert.

  • Anonymous

You hit it right on the mark, Phillip is the only one out of that three that actually sold their music after the finale and he did it by a huge mark. Jessica and Josh were barely a blip on the itunes chart. In my opinion, all of them are lucky that it is a Idols Tour, because none of them are ready to actually headline any tour. They are good as an ensemble, but by themselves, they would be lost. All of them need some time to grow up and develop as artist.

  • Anonymous

I am surprised no Idol performance. Jessica and/or Joshua should have been invited, imo. IIRC, both Kris Allen and Adam Lambert appeared and performed their year, so there is precedent for a runner up to perform just after their Idol season.

Oh well, Wal-Mart shareholders’ loss. Next? :-)

  • Kirsten

IRC, both Kris Allen and Adam Lambert appeared and performed their year,

    season.

No, it was just Kris (he appeared twice. He also performed with Smokey Robinson. Adam was in LA that day being chased by photographers in a parking lot). I don’t know if the runner-up has ever appeared. It was just Taylor, Cook, Kris, Lee and Scotty that I can remember. Jordin did it as well and I don’t remember Blake being there. Carrie was the first?

I think you’re remembering the FORD shareholders meeting not Walmart. Also Walmart is Arkansas based so definitely Kris’s demo.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100002166668687 Ali Goria

Isn’t that what he said he was gonna do? I can see it. His guitar playing is exuberant and real not just strumming. And after diva solos the crowd will be up for loud enthusiasm and he has that too. Of course what he said he’s gonna do and what he’s allowed to do are two different things, right. They probably will continue to make them sing Idol season songs to sell records so he’ll probably change them up to make a jam, perhaps.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100002166668687 Ali Goria

Right, Kris and Adam did the Ford meeting.

  • getaway1

If the performances on the tour are by elimination order, I think Phillip actually would be more at an advantage. Jessica, Josh and Hollie are all technical singers who are known more for their ballads. None play in instrument; none are known to jam with a band.  Yeah, so on a nice summer night, I think the audience would be ready for a nice welcome change by the time they get to Phillip.

  • Kirsten

Right, Kris and Adam did the Ford meeting,

Yes, the winner and runner-up do that each year. It is in the fall.
