David Cook

Jennifer Hudson is on right now performing “And I Am Telling You”. Jennifer is wearing her pink bra! She also performed her new single “Spotlight”.

FABULOUS!

ETA: If anyone knows where I can get my hands on some Jennifer Hudson media from the event, let me know. Seriously, she was awesome, too. I love her. Also, note to Queen Latifa and her handlers at Wal-Mart: 97.5 million people did not vote for the American Idol. It was 97.5 votes, by multiple people. Geez.

Webcast

David Cook is rumored to be appearing…

DAVID COOK IS ABOUT TO TAKE THE STAGE!

He’s got his acoustic guitar. He’s singing “The World I Know” HOORAY! This is totally acoustic, he sounds wonderful.

OK. Chills, people. That was great.

He’s chatting up the crowd, “You guys are the most beautiful Wal-Mart shareholders I’ve ever laid my eyes on”. Now he’s telling a story about the Wal-Mart in his college town.

Acoustic version of “Time of My Life” is next. Wow. Not hatin’ on the Magic Rainbow so much today, this is my favorite version of the song so far.

That’s it. Cookie did good!

I wonder if DC will really be there. There’s an hour left, right? Here’s hoping.
This webcast has to be one of the most boring things I’ve ever had the “pleasure” of viewing.
Thank goodness I can go back to being completely ignorant to all things Wall-Mart very very soon.

  • JessC77

    Are they in a stadium?

ETA: I don’t know why but, I pictured it being in a reception hall of a hotel with a small little stage or something like that.

  • cheese

The CFO is talking and talking and talking. FABULOUS!

J-Hud gave a great performance that no one seemed to appreciate. I hope DC is at least fitting in a good nap or hanging out with Joss Stone backstage or something while he waits for his canned Magic Rainbow music to start. There seemed to be confirmation from people who were going to this thing that he would definitely be there.

  • wfowfowfo

I’ve been watching since very early. Goodness —

Has anyone ever been to a stockholder’s meeting? Is this typical for a big company? All the cheering and such? Seems so out there to me.

J Hudson looked mighty hot. Interesting with the sound — the crew is really cutting out the croud noise after the performances.

There’s not all that much time left — my fingers are still crossed!

    Up NEXT!!!!!!!!

eta — OMG! He Cookified it! Totally awesome version. Best ever.

  • psnax

DC is about to come on by the sounds of it :)

ETA: He’s got his guitar and is sounding good! Don’t hear any canned music behind him. Nice interaction with the audience between his songs, I like the fact that he is having a “conversation” with them :)

I’m enjoying the acoustic “Magic Rainbows.”

Whatever opinion people may have of Walmart, the shareholder meeting is a great opportunity to play in front of a large audience. Sounds like he is being appreciated but as we all know, DC is just as happy playing to an audience of bar staff in an empty club.

  • JessC77

    Woo Hoo!!! David’s on now!

  • cheese

Yay! He has his guitar and is singing “The World I Know” I love that he’s singing this song to the WalMart bigwigs. Ha!

  • rita205

PLEASE SOMEONE MAKE THIS AVAILABLE LATER! Our connection is slow; all I’m getting is sound and a series of stills – bummer!

    Sounds great, though.

  • http://www.myspace.com/chachithegreat chachi

I’m getting a series of stills, as well, Rita, and I can’t turn up the sound at work passed a whisper. I’m hoping someone is ripping this? *makes puppy dog eyes at mj*

I am very needy, I know.

  • voteDC

Wow, I see David LIVE!! I am not in the States, I could usually see David on youtube after the event. NOW LIVE LIVE and the streaming is excellent!!!

    ARRRHHHHH!!! (I am excited!)

BTW, is there a time lag? He has just started Time of My Life. Anyway, it’s the best I can have. I am not complaining.

  • cheese

Ooh, I like Magic Rainbow with just an acoustic guitar! He’s playing around with the vocals a bit too. Nice. I hope he sings it like this on tour.

  • AInoob

He changed up TOML a little and did an acoustic version of it. Sounds pretty damn good.

  • http://myspace.com/girlgeek mj

That was great. No canned music.

  • Jolene

    Oh, my lord.
Is he not just the most amazing guy ever? He was so good up there!
I’m in full swoonage mode. Seriously. DC makes me swoon like no one else.
    That was just awesome. AWESOME.

  • Allison

Thanks for the heads up, mj!
I was able to catch some of The world I Know and all of Magic Rainbow. That was sweet.

  • http://myspace.com/girlgeek mj

Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢m getting a series of stills, as well, Rita, and I canà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t turn up the sound at work passed a whisper. Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢m hoping someone is ripping this? *makes puppy dog eyes at mj*

I can’t rip streaming video as it’s happening. I’m sure someone will have it.

  • Thea

This was AWESOME. He’s taken the Magic Rainbow, shaken it up, Cookified it, and now 3 weeks later it’s a fantastic song. He is MAGIC indeed.
    Loved it.

  • JessC77

O.K. that made my day!! They need to come out with a David Cook Channel…All David, all the time!! :wub_tb:

  • gingerly

Amazing! He really changed up the magic rainbow song for the better :) I loved it. It was soooo good to see him perform again, lessening the withdrawal symptoms. I’ve been guilty of playing marco polo in walmart but never rode the kiddie bikes (after all, I am 51 years old).

  • http://www.myspace.com/gwendolyndiane GwendolynD

Yay!! He changed up “Magic Rainbow”. Niiiiiice….!

  • awilliams

Good job chatting up the crowd. Enjoyed the acoustic version of TOML.

Alot of people make remarks about WalMart, some are justified, but the reality is alot of us do shop there. Not everyone can afford the higher end markets. I get all our paper products and cleaning supplies there. So good job David in tying in a personal WalMart story…very clever lad!

  • voteDC

Will David be back and sing another song? Could we yell “encore” in front of out screen so that David will come out again and just give us the couch stare that he did in People mag? I think I am completely out of my mind.

  • renee4

That was the most incredible version of TOML I have heard yet!

  • dcismyfav

It looks like the investors site has a Past Events section that contains a list of webcasts, so maybe they will capture the webcast and put it under this list later.

I want to see David Cook sing that TOML song again – this acoustic version was really good and so much better now that he “Cookified” it.

  • http://www.myspace.com/chachithegreat chachi

    I canà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t rip streaming video as ità ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s happening. Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢m sure someone will have it.

Sorry to assume, mj! Thank you for the post and info. I’m sure I can’t view it properly because the IT guy is downloading movies again. *sigh*

  • Thea

voteDC– yes, you are a bit out of your mind, but there’s many of us out there! :mrgreen_wp:
so I am not worried for my sanity and am actually happy to share this with all of you.
See how sweet Magic DC makes me?

  • http://myspace.com/girlgeek mj

The event itself will be archived, so you can watch it again.

I missed part of Jennifer’s performance, would love to see the whole thing.

I hope you can fast forward, though.

  • voteDC

Oh, forgot to thank mj. I wouldn’t have seen it without you telling us about it. I just caught David in time (he was talking about the walmart near his college when the video started streaming).

Thanks thanks thanks thanks thanks mj.

  • rita205

The event itself will be archived, so you can watch it again.

That’s good news, and someone on another board mentioned “getting it uploaded”. For all we know, there’s a shareholder with a camcorder putting it on youtube as we speak!

  • Trina

That was so beautiful – his voice is sublime. What a talent he is..and I can’t believe how much he’s making me love the magic rainbow song.

  • Hoothere115

PLEASE tell me someone will upload this somewhere… I only got it in bits and pieces… and DC was amazing!!! Love the new guitar…

Ooh, I managed to rip it as well. I’ll upload it to the Tube.
That was one great performance. Choc-full of charisma. DC just has it. He just does.

Thanks for the mp3 link, cheese. That would be so much easier to download than the video. I’ll just wait for the youtube to watch. :)

ETA: *transferred the DC mom link to the headlines thread*

  • Pam

I’ve got it downloaded to my ipod and it sounds fantastic! Thank you cheese for the mp3 link. :)

  • spanishfan

I love the way he changes it up every time. How can he say he is not a sex symbol – looking like he does with that smile – not to mention the best performance yet of TWIK and TOML. Loved his stage presence. He is a real star.

  • Lisa

I’m just going to go ahead and say it, David’s Magic Rainbows is the best coronation song evah. He has made Lucky Charms magically delicious! Is there not one thing this guy can not do? Awesome!

  • blissful

That was beautiful! Good for him in making it work for him — I think he’ll be just fine in singing this the rest of the summer :)

I am more and more confident that his debut album is going to be fabulous, even if he ends up singing material that’s not been written by him. He is so gifted in making songs his own. I even liked his Disney song.

  • http://myspace.com/girlgeek mj

I just posted some mp3 rips on the front page…

    Thanks for the tunes mj!!

  • mar_4DC

Thank you to all of you who post all these things so quickly!!!!!!!!! These songs and the video are just incredible. I thank my lucky stars that I stumbled across this site several weeks ago.

David Cook….. all I can say is OMG!! He just keeps getting better and better. He seems so much happier and relaxed now that the show is over. You can just tell how much he loves performing for a crowd.

  • Jolene

I just posted some mp3 rips on the front pageà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ¦

    Thank you mj!
That was one magical Magic Rainbow. Huh. I love the stupid coronation song.
It’s not just my Cookified mind, is it? The event was the dullest thing ever, and then he took the stage and suddenly it was an awesome rock concert. Sort of hoping Nigel was watching this somewhere and choking on his “no charisma” comment. Sheesh.

    Up on YouTube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A5E5S9rLsVc

  • http://myspace.com/girlgeek mj

Thanks Jolene, I’m going to post that. Might as well!

  • http://myspace.com/saltwatercures pj

Thanks for the mp3′s and links. Nice job, Cookie!

  • leogirl78

Thanks MJ for all that you do! I loved both of these performances! How he made me love a song about magic rainbows really says it all.

  • hollygo9

THANK YOU, MJ. I am your junkie, you are my dealer :)

Okay, the ‘cookified’ ToML : it completely changed the meaning of the song for me. Before, it was a ‘this is your moment. congrats’ song like you’d play at a graduation. Cookified, it became a song about putting the pieces back together. This singer is resolving to overcome his obstacles and move forward.

Same lyrics…same singer. He pulled the pathos out of the magic rainbow song. I am in awe.

  • thebluemartini

    thanks for posting, Jolene! =)

  • k4dc

Thanks for this, MJ. I watched it live and it brought a smile to my face, I watched it again and now I’m crying for some reason! I thought it was just amazing how he changed up Time of My Life and turned what was originally cheese into something truly beautiful. Is there nothing he can’t do? I’m so happy to get my Cookie fix today! Now maybe I should get back to work… :P

  • http://myspace.com/girlgeek mj

I absolutely love “The World I Know” I thought it was terrific live on the broadcast, and it really surprises me that the coronation song he picked, “Dream Big” sold more iTunes downloads.

Anyway, great job with that again today. Just loved it.

  • Hoothere115

    Thank you mj :D

  • bluejeans

Wow, COOKIFIED Time of My Life! I never thought I’ll hear it. He sounds vocally tired, but he finally made me like ToML. He stripped the cheese! Awesome.

  • Jolene

Thanks Jolene, Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢m going to post that. Might as well!

    My pleasure.

All I can say is WOW! He cooked the magic rainbow song to the point that those originally insipid words actually meant something!!!

    LOVED TWIK too.

Hope when he’s on Leno and has to sing the coronation song that he does it this way. Think how many people who have never heard the song will fall in love with it!!!

    Just.fuckin’.wow.

  • Chicago-sally

Well, once again it’s my opinion, but I am Telling you has been done to death….overdone.…and I know private affairs pay a lot of money….that’s where Jen-Hud makes most of her “concert” money, she doesn’t perform in live concerts….but as much as she kills with that song, it has been overdone. and that’s my opinion. Not dissing anybody.

  • Kirsten

This was today? I guess the earlier claims that ALL the Idols had to be in LA for tour practice today were not true. Sure, he can get there today, but he’ll be late which, as was previously noted, would be a little rude to the others. Yes, I know, he had no say about this.

Glad the Cookie got to play his instrument (those backing tracks are so cheesy). I know the Walmart gig is always controversial, but it’s great to get another high quality clip of them performing. Plus, it never hurts to have Walmart on your side.

The article on Syesha at the top of the 6/5 Headlines thread said rehearsals start this Sunday, so I’m guessing the Friday rehersal start date was wrong or changed.

Sorry – that was my fault – I perpuated that rumor.

ETA: Thanks for the mp3′s MJ – I missed the live stream. Cookie sounded great. I’m gonna have to agree with Chicago-Sally here – I really don’t want to hear the I’m Telling You song again anytime soon. Although Jennifer does sound great singing it.

  • cheese

Huh. I seem to have managed to hear J-Hud sing “And I Am Telling You” exactly once before (when I saw Dreamgirls in the theater), so I really enjoyed today’s performance.

I don’t love her new single, but she sounded great singing it. I love her voice.

  • Chicago-sally

Cheese, she sings it in almost every private event she does….she sang it at the Fashion Academy last year….she sang it at Clive’s party last year….she hasn’t done it on TV, no, but in private events….I’m just saying….hope girlfriend is making a ton of money from that song….and Jennifer Holiday is probably fuming mad that Jen-Hud has claimed her signature song.

  • http://www.myspace.com/gwendolyndiane GwendolynD

“And I Am Telling You” is too much for anyone before noon.

That being said, I’ve never heard Jennifer sing it, except for the movie. I don’t frequent private events, and I’d imagine that Wal-Mart shareholders and associates don’t either.

She probably should have revisited “Love You I Do” or “I Am Changing”.

Jennifer Holiday can really get over it, IMO. This is JHud’s moment.

  • kathrynTX

OMG. The Magic Rainbow song has definitely been COOKED. I’m a believer! The words DO mean something. There are some GOOD words in there. I got goosebumps and almost cried too, at work. The World I Know. I’m speechless. Thank you for letting us know about this, mj. I miss seeing David sing on TV every week. Thank goodness I can still get my Cook fix SOMEhow. Besides spending every minute I can listening to all the music I have, at home, at work, in my car, that is. I’m checking outside right now, in the dark & white clouds in Texas, for the Magic Rainbow…I know it’s out there…and I’l taste every moment…. Thank you, David. Sigh. :happy_tb:

  • Trina

I still can’t get over the Cookified TOML. Amazing and his voice is truly beautiful. Loved seeing his reaction to the crowd.

  • colette

    Lovely performance.

I’ve had a lot of problems with such commercial tie-ins with Wal-Mart in the past, given the longstanding inequity in their pay and promotions for women (spurring some major lawsuits), and their unafforedable employee health insurance packages. Also, they just tried to retrieve an insurance settlement a worker in one their stories received after being severely, permanently injured and brain-damaged. After a lot of publicity, they finally backed down on that.

HOWEVER, I can enjoy this performance much more now, after learning that watchdog groups like Walmart Watch are having some success in convincing the company it is in their best interest to become a better employer and corporate citizen.

The latter was instrumental, in fact, in the decision of the band The Eagles (a group that’s very concerned with social/environmental issues) to sell their new album exclusively through Wal-Mart.

Don Henley of the Eagles said in an interview, “I have a direct line now to the CEO of Wal-Mart. We’re certainly making our feelings known in terms of ecological stewardship and some of the practices of big business that are undesirable and wasteful.”

BEST VERSION OF TIME OF MYLIFE!!!

My favorite version of the song too.

  • psnax

Thanks for the mp3s mj :) I’ve enjoyed Cookie’s acoustic performances since his music started to become well known and really liked both acoustic performances today.

Also, note to Queen Latifa and her handlers at Wal-Mart: 97.5 million people did not vote for the American Idol. It was 97.5 votes, by multiple people. Geez.

Yeah really. That inaccurate statistic keeps being cited. I fully expect it to be rolled out again in November as part of some rant about voter apathy and how more people voted for President Cook rather than President [insert name of whoever wins]. (Of course the “apathy” reports will also fail to note that a large proportion of those voting in AI can’t vote in political elections because of their age or nationality, so even if 97.5 million people did vote on AI it still wouldn’t be a particularly meaningful comparison).

But I digress … I didn’t comment on Jennifer Hudson in my last post – she was also very good today, might have to get myself some Walmart shares, beats any shareholder meeting I’ve ever received correspondence about.

  • kc f

it’s good to see him looking a little more rested.

  • reinharv

I loves this version of TOML. Hopefully he will do this version on tour. That would be fantastic. If he had had some time prior to recording the song and had this version–it would still be #1 on iTunes. However, I still love the other version. It’s amazing how he can Cookiefy things. He really does his songs differently when he performs live. That’s what makes him such a stand-out performer who thinks and sings out of the box and doesn’t keep keep doing things exactly the same every time.

Thanks for the mp3s and for this post. Loved it!

  • gingerly

Thanks for the MP3. Loved David’s performance today. Love his sense of humor and how tongue-in-cheek he is. I wish I could say the same for Ms. Hudson but she does nothing for me. I’m so not into diva singers. I’m happy for her though that she’s doing so well.

I can’t blame Cookie for doing what he has to do as regards Wal-Mart. They have their foot on his neck. Even if he had any opinion, he’d have to play footsie since Wal-Mart doesn’t hesitate to use its power to bust unions, shift the cost of health coverage to localities and in all ways run their business like they were the company town.

Now that Wal-Mart and Best Buy and all the big box stores have succeeded in killing the record chains like Tower and Virgin, there’s no one else to sell a CD.

These were both just beautiful. Thank you so much for posting, mj. I grabbed the MP3s, as well.

DC needs to stop making me fangirl his ass before my dignity goes down in flames around me. Kicking puppies and snapping the necks of babies isn’t going to deter me. Hell, if the pocket scarf doesn’t stop me, there’s not much else that will. I need him to stop making the pretty sounds come out of his mouth, kthx. Boy certainly has a way with music, and now I just might love the fucking Rainbow song. Bastard.

  • Chicago-sally

Well as I have written many many times….most of these big singers including Mariah sing at corporate events….that’s where they make their money actually. Jen-Hud does private events, she gets paid 6 figures to sing. So this is a good start for David….his first big paycheck!

There was an article awhile back in our local news about how much the Idols charge for private events, for ex: Kelly C. charges $250,000. Reuben charges $30,000. And it goes on and on.

So just one appearance is one person’s annual salary.

  • Chicago-sally

    Sorry for the double post:http://american-idol.spoilerbuzz.com/page/2/

American Idol mini-concertsà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ¦ how much does your favorite Idol charge?
    Sunday, December 17th, 2006 on SpoilerBuzz.com
An amusing article courtesy of the New York Post reveals how much some of the American Idol celebs charge for private performances and parties. Carrie Underwood and Kelly Clarkson command top dollar, while pseudo-stars like Kimberly Caldwell command far (far!) less.

For the right price, à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“American Idolà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ castoffs, finalists and even champs will pay a visit to your wedding, Sweet 16 or bar mitzvah.

à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“The average going rate for an à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‹American Idolà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ finalist can be as little as $15,000 or as much as $150,000,à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ says a source familiar with the business of brokering singers, bands and other talent for corporate functions and exclusive private parties.

à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“But it really depends on what you want them to do. Are they just going to show up at the party or are they going to sing? Do they have a song on the charts right now, or are they yesterdayà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s news?à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬

I admit, it would be tempting to have Carrie Underwood perform at a private party, simply to hear her sing When He Cheats. I couldnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t care less about Ruben or Kimberly though.

Read the full article for all the insider info on getting AI alums to perform at private events.

This Walmart performance made me remember going to see Clay and Ruben at a Ford Motor Company event, we had to sit out in the atrium and watch it on a live feed. A few lucky people got tables inside. This happened the fall after the tour I think. After they sang all the Ford people got up and left and the fans that were there were able to come right up to the stage and say hi to them. I didn’t manage to get an autograph because their handlers didn’t let them stay too long – but still I was pretty close up! Huh, had not thought about that in a long time, but this Walmart gig reminded me.

Anyhow back to Cookie – pretty cool!!!

Thx for posting the youtube and mp3s. I don’t think that I could have made myself sit through the whole thing to get to his appearance.

I seriously doubt that TPTB would have put up with an acoustic version of the coronation song actually being the single. But it’s nice that he’s using these appearances to put out some different versions of it, and I do really like this version. I also love that his “other” song is consistently the one that Simon told him had killed his chances of winning. Not only do I enjoy his version of TWIK, but the irony just amuses me so very much.

man, i really, really hope that he’ll perform *that* version of TOML on leno and the view. it’s so much more him and really just beautiful. as someone said, he found the pathos in the rainbow song.

    *dreamy sigh*

I haven’t been able to find a video of JHudson’s performance. Does anyone have a link?

He’s just so good at interpretation, you know? I think that’s what makes him stand out for me. He can make the magic rainbow song sound deep and emotionally resonant. Boy has a talent for interp, that’s for sure. I want THIS version to be the single, though.

Loved that version of Time of my Life. Inspired me to bring out the Cookie Skittles pack.
    Yum, love that magic rainbow.

    MJ
I have a strange sense of humor and one of your posts made me laugh and inspired this little image.
    Thanks for posting the mp3′s.
Hope you aren’t offended by my artwork. Sometimes I post things to make you laugh and I think they get taken the wrong way. Hope that doesn’t happen. But you inspired this one.

    That opening is cool!

Anyway, surprised Jen-hud’s singing w/ backups, when she does private events, she’s only with a backup piano player. No orchestra or band.

The Queen is doing great as a host of TV shows and events. Joss Stone looked stoned.

I had to skip over the National Anthem. Those meetings must be boring to sit through :)

  • Chicago-sally

Jen didn’t have a backup band…. but maybe it’s her/their way of cutting down costs.?! Talk about lacking personality….she still needs to learn how to talk in front of an audience.

She’s still finding her fashion style, because that dress was not flattering to her figure.

  • Chicago-sally

But she sounded great….sorry for keep posting guys…. I thought she sounded great, that big old booming voice….as for Joss Stone, I just don’t get her yet. She’s got a nice voice, but she hasn’t found that “song” yet that will make her a star and not a “name”.

Now, assuming they all got paid the same, which is about $100K(avg), who do you think had more money in their pocket after the show? certainly not Stone with the backup singers and band.

I wonder how much Constantine gets paid to call bingo numbers in Wisconsin.

    **snort** :D

Thanks for the mp3′s and vid, MJ. Loved both of Cookie’s songs. :)
