Scotty been teasing that his new album that will have a countrier feel, perhaps along the lines of his cover of Conway Twitty’s “Hello Darlin'”. Earlier this year, he told Rolling Stone Country:

I’m going to make a country music record. That’s what I had to try to convey to the label and they were all for it. The stuff I grew up with was that kind of music — I want to have some depth and portray a different side.

I’ll play the game a little, but I’m going to try to stay true to what I love.

Sure enough, “Whiplash” follows in the thematic vein of songs like “Firecracker” and “Haywire” by one of his idols, neo-traditionalist country star Josh Turner, with a couple of vocal moments that evoke Turner’s signature baritone. But the chorus has more of a Jerry Lee Lewis “Great Balls Of Fire” edge. EDIT: Check out the writing credits for the song below!

Here is a list of additional likely cuts and known co-writes for Scotty’s upcoming album. As always, all songwriters are listed in alphabetical order:

“Call It A Day” (Casey Beathard / Scotty McCreery / Frank Rogers)
“Five More Minutes” (Monty Criswell / Scotty McCreery / Frank Rogers)

Scotty’s next album will follow his sophomore studio album, See You Tonight, which was released in mid-October 2013, spawned 2 t10 country radio hits (the platinum-certified title track and “Feelin’ It”) and had sold 270k through mid-April 2015 according to Roughstock.

What do you think of “Whiplash”? Do you think it would work as a country radio single, and do you think it can extend Scotty’s run of consecutive t10 hits?
