UPDATE: The LA Times reports that Victoria’s rep denies she’s in talks to be a permanent judge, “They felt she was natural in Denver. [But] she has Fashion Week coming up, and she is focusing on that.” As if Victoria would turn down a spot on the biggest show in America for…Fashion Week. Still, here’s hoping her rep don’t lie…

Judges, Simon Cowell, Kara DioGuardi and Randy Jackson are in Boston today to hear auditions for Season 9 of American Idol. Spice girl, Victoria Beckham is also there filling in as guest judge for the second time–she also sat in on last week’s Denver auditions.

The speculation is that, because they asked her back, Idol is seriously considering Victoria as a permanent replacement for Paula Abdul who left the show in a salary dispute.

But, I’m also hearing that Ryan Seacrest said on his KIIS FM radio yesterday that due to a scheduling conflict, Katy Perry would not be a guest judge as previously reported.

So, fingers crossed that Victoria is filling in for Katy, or that the producers couldn’t find someone suitable at the last minute for the Boston auditions.

If this Radar Online report is true, Idol can’t be seriously considering her for a permanent position. I mean, yeah, she is managed, personally, by Idol creator, Simon Fuller. And yes, Fuller has been unsuccessful so far in making Victoria and her soccer-playing husband, David Beckham, stars on this side of the pond–this could be her last big shot.

But surely, Fuller wouldn’t put Idol in jeopardy in an attempt to force his prize client on the American public? Fuller, you’ve been trying, and we’ve already said NO NO NO. Please get the message, OK?

I’m just going to think happy thoughts in the mean time. Happy happy thoughts.

Of course, there are those rumors that Paula Abdul may be coming back after all. I would laugh and laugh and laugh if that happened. And then I’d pat myself on the back for being right in the first place. But, I think in order for Paula to return, she’s going to have to lower her asking price. Maybe even swallow her pride and take the 5M that Idol initially offered her.

Maybe Paula will wake up in a cold sweat one of these nights, and in an epiphany, ask her self “MY GOD, what have I DONE!!!” At which point she’ll ring her manager and scream into the phone “TAKE THE OFFER David! Take it, take it, take it!”

Or maybe, after weeks of horrible chemistry and FAIL on the judges panel during the audition rounds, the producers will decide that Paula is worth the extra money, and the tantrums after all…

Either take Paula back, or just keep three damn judges. We don’t need four, and we certainly don’t need someone like Victoria who doesn’t seem musically qualified to do this.

  • http://www.thriftysisters.ecrater.com tammyinohio

If Victoria Beckham becomes a permanent fixture on AI, I am done!! I just cannot stand that woman at all. It’s bad enough imo that Kara is returning but to have both of them at the judges table, I just couldn’t take it.

  • windmills

If Paula does come back (and ITA it’s possible) it may very well coincide with her kicking out her new management. Everybody’s going to need a scapegoat for why the earlier rounds of negotiations went south, and new management that acted irresponsibly would fit that bill.

  • lucy

I guess they’re hoping VB will perk up and suddenly start looking like a live person. Good luck with that! Maybe she doesn’t eat enough to have any animation. Every time I see her, I feel sorry for her, actually. She seems *so* stiff and as if she’s never ever having any fun.

They’ve gone from incredibly loosey-goosey Paula, who frequently looked as if her brains might fall out of her mouth or something, to somebody with the personality (and body, kind of) of an ironing board here.

I think they *must* be trying her out as a permanent replacement, though, since in past years when they had those celebrity judges for the audition rounds, hardly any of their remarks ever showed up in the broadcast anyway. And those people were usually pretty big names brought in to woo viewers, I thought. (not that they did, of course ..)

  • auntieaimee

Paula’s done. I don’t see her coming back.

  • TopCatDC

Hey, if the requirements are ego, loopiness, and a smattering of talent, then the ideal candidate is already in Simon Fuller’s rolodex. But, is Tatiana Del Toro available?

  • Truthiness

Awww haters. Victoria being on AI is just full of synergestic goodness, so they should totally do it. Fuller synergy for having someone he manages on a show he’s a part of, and Truthiness synergy, which is about maximizing lulzage.

But really, if Fuller can, I don’t see him resisting the temptation to keep trying to make the Beckhams happen in the US. Which dude, we already have our Paris Hilton, she’s called Paris Hilton. And when even Pele can’t make us care about soccer, that should tell you all you need to know about how well David Beckham will do with that. Plus we already have our Brad Pitt pretty boy celebrity to follow, he’s called Brad Pitt.

  • isitoveryet

Anyone else find it odd to have 2 Brits on and AMERICAN Idol show? LOL

  • Truthiness

Anyone else find it odd to have 2 Brits on and AMERICAN Idol show? LOL

America’s Got Talent has two British people on it as well. Which yeah, I did find a bit odd.

  • Squirrely

It’s rather odd knowing they are only down the street from me.

  • cwg509

Victoria Beckham should stick to Project Runway judging (she was actually not bad there).

And, no Paula is not coming back if she has one shred of self-respect left.

    3 judges is best anyway

  • luvadamlambert

I MISS PAULA! okay I said it:)

  • isitoveryet

America’s Got Talent has two British people on it as well. Which yeah, I did find a bit odd.

Can’t watch that show, it gives me a headache. :) Well truth be told, I do sometimes question the taste that some Americans have. LOL

  • Truthiness

And, no Paula is not coming back if she has one shred of self-respect left.

So, totally possible she could come back, then.

  • tinawina

    :laugh_tb: @ Truthiness!

  • maturin

Who knows, Posh might work miracles. For example, by making Kara seem likable by comparison.

Why does Fuller even care? He and the Beckhams are multimillionaires. Can’t they sit around on their money piles steeping tea out of hundred pound notes or something?

Now, it they made *David* Beckham a judge, modeling that line of briefs, maybe they’d get somewhere with the US audience. Can he actually speak, though?

If they need a British celebrity wearing a frock, can we have Eddie Izzaard. He has a grasp of American culture.

  • laura59

Anyone else find it odd to have 2 Brits on and AMERICAN Idol show? LOL

I totally agree! Enough with these Brits on shows which start off with “American” anything. Don’t they have television in England??? I was already on the fence about watching AI this year after ridiculous judge antics and the obvious wrong winner, so putting all these Brits on will make my decision easy. That’s right, Dancing with the stars will be going head to head with AI. Sorry FOX!!!

  • Truthiness

Now, it they made *David* Beckham a judge, modeling that line of briefs, maybe they’d get somewhere with the US audience. Can he actually speak, though?

Funny you mention Beckham speaking….yeah, he has a really high voice. It’s pretty funny to see him, and than you hear him. And you’re like, uh hunh. Never speak again, you just ruined all of that pretty.

  • isitoveryet

The funny thing is that I prefer music from the UK, but American Idol is just that American & has to appeal to americans. Victoria is like a female Simon, but with better taste in clothes.

Maturin – Now Eddie Izzaard would be interesting.

  • PattyH

    OMG! Truthiness, hysterical!

  • dflowers

Please, Please Please!!!! We do NOT need a British Stick Insect on AI. How about a NORMAL sized woman, Like Qu een Latifah. I think she would be aMAZing!

  • https://twitter.com/draddee Sunn

Don’t they have television in England???

LOL! No, we basically spend our evenings listening to reruns of Churchill’s speeches on shortwave radio.

  • SpenserJ

Funny you mention Beckham speaking’ ¦.yeah, he has a really high voice. It’s pretty funny to see him, and than you hear him. And you’re like, uh hunh. Never speak again, you just ruined all of that pretty.

Ya’ know what’s funny? I don’t think I’ve ever heard either of the two of them speak. I know I missed the PR episode that Victoria was on, and I really don’t think I’ve ever seen her on anything else. So, I have no clue if she’s boring or not. I have no opinion of her one way or the other.

I don’t follow soccor, so I’ve only ever seen David Beckham in those pretty, pretty pictures.

I’d hate to see Paula come back. It would bug me to see that childish, tantrum-y, twitter spam enticing behavior be rewarded.

But, I love the show, so I’ll still watch no matter who’s judging.

  • abbysee

LOL! No, we basically spend our evenings listening to reruns of Churchill’s speeches on shortwave radio.

Now that’s a effing response! Score!

I say pay Paula the 5 million and take Posh to an all you can eat buffet.

  • dreyraglin

Its rumors she could return to Idol but not American Idol but her being on Australian Idol. That is what E! is reporting but again just rumors. I honestly hope Paula doesn’t come back. I mean its not like without Idol we will see Paula wondering the streets looking for a job. I think she will be fine.

I just really want to see though how Idol is gonna be with her absence for a whole season which will be the only reason I tune in cause after the bore of last season I wasn’t planning to but with Paula’s departure I have to see how it turns out.

  • ShariG

My apologies to the Spice Girl fans out there but Victoria Beckham has never done anything at all for me and she sure doesn’t seem to be the “heart” of the show that Paula was. She always looks so sour and glum. I don’t get it. I think I would have a huge smile if I were married to David Beckham. I really hope that Paula and Simon Fuller do reconsider.

  • cwg509

You’re welcome for the set-up, Truthiness!

  • Sherena

LOL I will be so amused if they make Victoria a judge.

Although I really wish they would just stick to 3 judges and let the contestants have longer songs.

  • mikeyb

3 judges, please. I really hate all this focus on the judges, and would rather they cut down on the number of judges, cut back on the judge-drama, and focus more on the competition.

  • canuck

    What! Victoria Beckham for Paula?

Just looked back at some old videos with Paula dancing and smiling away. She’s so encouraging to the contestants and I can’t bear the thought of her being replaced with that frigid Brit.

Maybe Beckham will be hired to comment on the fashion sense of the contestants or if they are thin enough?

Wish Paula would can her new manager and accept less money.

  • smartcookie

Scary Spice! Scary Spice! Scary Spice! I love her and she’s way more fun than the praying mantis known as Victoria Beckham.

Queen Latifah is an awesome idea, as is Kelly Clarkson. Or Faith Hill or Amy Grant or Sheila E, for that matter. I hereby veto LaToya Jackson, Sharon Osbourne, Marie Osmond (or any Osmond), Julianne Hough (or any Hough or Ballas or any of their girlfriends or boyfriends), Debbie Gibson, Vitamin C, Tiffany, or any other 80s teen princess. I do have a secret fondness for Irene Cara, another 80s one-hit-wonder (Fame! I always sing the same song!), however.

  • cookcricket

Queen Latifah, Kelly Clarkson or someone along those lines would make the Idol world say Paula who? Please Idol don’t rush into to this – choose wisely!!!!

Sorry I just don’t know enough about VB to say one way or the other about her, but I do know that the little I’ve seen of there has never been a smile on her face.

  • Sassycatz

Does Posh Spice know anything about American country western music? They make the Idols perform this genre — in one way or another — almost every season. One of the most successful Idol winners is a country artist — ever heard of Carrie Underwood? — and Simon — an important BRITISH judge — hates the genre. What does Victoria Beckham bring to the table in terms of understanding the American music market and tradition?! Probably absolutely nothing. Nothing. Nada.

Shouldn’t they, at least, get another American on the panel — who has some knowledge of various American traditions of music? Huh? Is that too much to ask of our British overlords?

Please, Please Please!!!! We do NOT need a British Stick Insect on AI. How about a NORMAL sized woman, Like Qu een Latifah. I think she would be aMAZing!

Queen Latifah would be marvelous. How about Gloria Estevan?

  • CDCIdol

According to CNN, Paula made 3.5 million and Randy made 5 million last year. What? Randy making more than Paula? I know some people don’t appreciate Paula that much around here but she should make just as much or even more than Randy.

  • will

    L.A. Times:

As for the online rumors that the former Posh Spice took vocal and facial expression lessons to prepare for her “Idol” work, her rep said the gossip was “completely false and totally ridiculous.”

    Facial expression lessons??????

  • Sherena

What? Randy making more than Paula? I know some people don’t appreciate Paula that much around here but she should make just as much or even more than Randy.

    This.

  • will

Why do they need a fourth judge for these auditions? Before Kara came on board, they would have occasional guest judges in selected cities, but it was normally just Simon, Paula, and Randy. For some reason, though, TPTB seem wedded to having four judges now, even though by any objective measure it has not worked out very well. They should have just saved the expense of Posh’s airfare to Boston and given Kara a test run on her own, just to see what the chemistry is like with the three of them. It’s not like Posh was such a hit in Denver, from what we’ve heard.

  • ShariG

I love the suggestions for either Queen Latifah or Gloria Estevan. Either one could be supportive and at the same time give constructive feedback. Still, I’m going to miss Paula.

The coke cups on the judges desk have more personality than La Posh, so, yeah, I can see this.

If she took lessons to get those expressions her face make, she really needs to get her money back.

  • karenw

Don’t they have television in England???

We do and funnily enough it’s full of American shows …. including endless reruns of Friends ….lol

Eddie Izzard would be a fantastic talent show judge .. the guy’s a legend but unfortunately he’s a bit busy at the moment running 1000 miles around the UK to raise money for the charity “Sport Relief” … and no he’s not wearing his high heels ….lol

It’s great to follow him on Twitter . he’s posting pics along his route daily.

And just to be ontopic .. perhaps he could swap places with VB and she can do the run instead.

David Beckham actually had elocution lessons when he first became England Captain to try and improve his voice or interviews … didn’t seem to make that much difference though.

  • http://idolstages.com Connie D.

I liked Queen Latifah very much until she ruined the finale with her song. If she didn’t have time to properly rehearse, then she shouldn’t have taken the gig. Sorry.

Hell no! To more foreign celebrities joining the cast of American Idol. We’ve got Simon on AI and Cat Deeley on SYTYCD and they are good, so we’re covered in the Brit department.

Forget everyone else and just put the perfect judge, Sheila E, on the panel. http://www.sheilae.com/

  • iluvai

Of course I want Paula!!! I really think this coming season will be the end for AI and I would love to see her finish the run. But please, 3 judges only!!!

  • Grammie Kari

Its rumors she could return to Idol but not American Idol but her being on Australian Idol. That is what E! is reporting but again just rumors.

Somehow that “feels” like a good idea. Paula will still be assocuated with AI and her appearance would help Australian Idol! Cool.

  • http://www.lindafoltz.com linda2u

If Paula doesn’t return, I’d LOVE to see Bette Midler as a judge. I think her comments would be spot on AND entertaining – and I believe Bette could keep Simon Cowell in his place!

  • justjude

WHAT!…..Not Victoria ….No, No, not after having had a lovely, vulnerable, joyful, flawed, but . ‘ ., interesting and always kind PAulA!!!! That would be like ordering
some-body from the Droid factory…..What a BLIPING comedown!!
I would love to think TPTB Would offer her what she deserves. And I don’t care what
    some say……She always entertains!!!

But if she should stand by her principle for anywhere near equal pay, This would be my
short list………1. Scary Spice (loads of personality, looks real, and can actually sing..unlike Vic and she looks real and good…also unlike Vic.)OH No She is a Brit!
    2. The Queen Latifah (More regal than Vic, Kind, can actually sing, unlike Vic,and (bonus) looks like many women!!
3.Cyndy Lauper…Don’t stone me!…I know she is a Brit but she is genuine and as a
fabulous performer herself, she would know who should go and how to say it!!!
    4.Joan Jet…Why not?
OK, WHat Do I KNOW!!! PLEASE PTB, Bring back the nice one!!!

  • Susan M.

This thread is full of comedy – but also tragedy.

Someone please explain to me how the biggest TV show in the U.S. for eight years and is wholly based on the premise of finding and judging talent cannot cast one of four positions when they have the entire freakin world talent pool to choose from? Why bother to actually pay VB? You could stick a manneqin or cardboard cut-out in her chair and yield the same results.

Maybe they should have her do Eddie Izzard’s run. I predict she’d break a hip in the first mile.

Love the Gloria Estefan suggestion. Hell, if they’re serious about VB, I’d be open to a hostage trade for Hasselhoff (okay, not really), but jeez can we possibly scrape the bottom of this rusty barrel anymore desperately?

  • Miss Chaos

I agree in Shelia E, YES YES YES, but if not then what about Mary Murphy from SYTYCD, Im sure Nigel would love to help AI out :lol_tb:

  • randomx6

Cyndi Lauper is not a Brit. She is a New Yorker from Queens!

  • auntieaimee

My vote is for Cyndi Lauper. She’s truly talented and unique, was a huge pop star back in the day and she seems like a real person. Love that woman!

  • will

    nvm

  • Susan M.

Cyndi Lauper is not a Brit. She is a New Yorker from Queens!

Thanks! When I first read that I thought, “Huh?”

I like the Sheila E., Queen Latifah, really anyone with a modicum of heart, personality and musical knowledge would be far more suitable than Posh (who we could also replace with the potted plant that blocks Taylor’s picture).

Gee, I know it’s a tough gig ‘“ working two days a week for five months (after the summer travel/audition episodes are wrapped). After that your workday consists of what? Arriving at 3:00 or so, attending production meeting perhaps, sitting in a chair for hair and makeup and then sitting in a chair while a group of fresh-faced hopefuls sing to you. Give them your feedback, try not to upstage them or stick your foot in your mouth and be home by 7:00 p.m.

Do a few talk shows, make a prediction or two and watch your celebrity soar. Definitely could be harder ways to make seven-plus figures …

  • ryo

I’m honestly disappointed that they aren’t returning the 3 judge format, unless I’ve missed something. Four judges just doesn’t work. Even ignoring how they were constantly going over time, with four people the whole judging experience just feels completely off.

  • tinawina

I’m honestly disappointed that they aren’t returning the 3 judge format, unless I’ve missed something. Four judges just doesn’t work. Even ignoring how they were constantly going over time, with four people the whole judging experience just feels completely off.

I don’t think it is a given that they will have 4 judges for the show’s regular run. Right now it just looks like they are trying to have 4 for the audition phase to add some spice to the process. I bet of they don’t find someone who really seems to click, then they will only have 3. I hope.

  • canuck

Why do they have to have a second female judge if they insist on 4.

They could have 3 male plus one female. I’d like to see someone who is a little eccentric for their fourth – add some zip to the mix they have now. Someone who I love and happens to be Brit would be Robbie Williams.

Mind you that would be too much competition for Simon. He’d never go for it.

  • chessguy99

Four judges would work, if all the non-essential BS was cut out. Getting rid of Paula is a good start. She was responsible for a good two-thirds of the time wasting Now, rein in the Simon/Ryan bro-mance, and you’ll have sufficient time to get good concise judging done without the end of the show rush.

  • canuck

I thought it was Kara who was the long-winded one this season.

Simon kept on interrupting Paul -probably might have made her comments seem longer.

  • canuck

So I am not crazy? Just found out that Robbie Williams is signed up to work on
X-Factor with Simon Cowell -just announced this!

Simon would go for it and Robbie would be perfect for American Idol.

  • lavender1960

I like Victoria aka Posh. I didn’t at first but having seen her in interviews and her little show about moving to LA, I actually find her personable and funny. But could AI afford her?

I’d rather have three judges and let the kids sing longer.

  • lavender1960

Sheila E was a good judge on America’s Next Great Band, which was a Simon Fuller series but Dicko was even better – he’s been a judge on Australian Idol as well.

He’d be like Simon, blunt but more insightful and I think a keener sense of the current music scene.

Just imagine the Aussie vs Brit jokes

ETA Just read Dicko and Simon are mates.
