VH1 Divas Celebrates Soul – Jennifer Hudson & Kelly Clarkson – VIDEOS

The VH1 Divas Salute to Soul premiered tonight, but you can watch the full videos now at VH1.

Watch Vh1 Divas Salute to Soul at VH1

Watch performances below from Jennifer Hudson and Kelly Clarkson.   The show opened with Kelly, Jennifer and Mary J. Blige singing a medley of their favorite hits.  Later, Kelly sang “Chain of Fools” with Ledisi as part of the Detroit medley.  Jennifer and Jesse J sang “Knock on Wood” to honor Memphis.

How awesome was it to see Kelly and Jennifer share the stage? Reportedly the two powerhouse vocalists had never met before!

Plus, Kelly sang her single “What Doesn’t Kill You (Stronger)” and Jennifer blew the roof on the joint with her David Guetta dance number, “Night of Your Life”.

I’m posting the Idol-centric performances, but some of the other highlights included songs from Florence Welch, Jill Scott, Mary J. Blige, Ledisi and  appearances from legends, Mavis Staples, Chaka Khan, Wanda Jackson and Martha Reeves.

Kelly and Ledisi….wowza.  Kelly, Jen, and MaryJ, nice.  I must say in the begining  Jen looked like she wanted to be elsewhere.  Kelly always shows the joy in what she does o her face.  Infectious! Will watch the rest in the am.

I cannot believe Stronger was not the first single off this album.  This is more than a song – it’s an anthem.

Stronger ranks right up there with Kelly’s best.  I positively love it.

By the by – did Kelly hurt her ankle?  There’s a noticeable limp, she’s favoring it when walking and you could see the wrap when she was wearing dresses.

Yes, Kelly did injure her ankle.  I don’t remember the details but they said she was a trooper for continuing.

I look at Kelly and Jennifer’s performances and  American Idol has a kind of respect that some of the other shows don’t have yet.  I prefer Kelly’s singing over Jen’s, but they are truly talented young ladies.

The night sounds like it was a bit of a mess, J. Hud and Kelly sounded great though.

Kelly and Ledisi on Chain of Fools was my favorite of the night. I don’t know who Ledisi is but she can sing! The “soul” reinterpretation of SUBG was really cute as well.

  • http://twitter.com/lufflyness Jenna

Yea I think she tweeted that her heel went into a pot hole on her way to the show and she twisted her ankle.

  • heartly

I loved the opening.  Those three ladies sounded great together!  Bet Mary J. never thought she’d be singing SUBG.  haha  They did a nice changeup on the arrangement of that.

I’m not the biggest fan of JHud to say the least but Kelly and her more than held their own at this show.  I have to wonder what was going through her head when Jessie J started her stuttering in the “Knock on Wood” performance. That was strange.

I was just thinking about how JHud says that she’d never met Kelly before and that seems odd since they both did the 2009 Divas together.  Maybe they just didn’t run into each other at that one.

Kelly sounded amazing as always. They definitely should of released Stronger as her first single, it just makes you make you want to get up and sing along and dance. At first it seemed like Jennifer was holding back, but she totally killed it during Night Of Your Life. Loved the beginning how they did skits of their own songs along with singing the Supremes.

Its good you have this here.  I saw promos few days and wanted to watch it but forgot.  Jennifer and Kelly are diva soul singing type and appropriate to have them there.  They did well.  I like what kelly wore performing “what doesnt kill you” – its more slimming that some tight dresses she’s worn to other awards shows recently.

WOW, they all sounded effin AMAZING! I love the Divas! Jennifer Hudson’s voice is perfection and so is Kelly Clarkson’s! I don’t have a problem with Jessie J’s tone, though i do wish that she reigned it in a little cuz sometimes her phrasing suffers from too much riffing. But I love her songs, IDGAF!

Mary J Blige is FLAWLESS!!! i think i’m a little too young cuz i don’t remember her songs but daaaamn she can saaang!

  • RockiDreams

Loved Kelly and Mary Blige with the exception of the change up of Since You’ve Been Gone – ugh.  I don’t get Hudson – cannot stand her screeching and she just has a tone that makes me want to turn her off immediately. Thanks for the videos- I enjoy seeing anything by Kelly.

About Jennifer — (and Kelly) I don’t like all that XFACTOR light show and dancing in the background, it’s very distracting and it appeals to the younger folk who are ADD and have to have “motion” all the time, but the light show needs to go.    One thing that Jen has over Kelly is movie-stardom, something Kelly will probably never have.  She doesn’t have the Actor’s chops, sorry to say.  Both are hitting on 30 and the younger girls are nipping at their heels, but jennifer can always fall back on movies.

Who is Jessie J?  Is she isomebody big? or a wannabe?

  • Mateja Praznik

Jessie J is a British popstar. She originally started as a songwriter for other artists. She wrote/co-wrote Party In The USA (Miley Cyrus). Then she released “Do It Like A Dude” (originally she wrote it for Rihanna) in the UK and it was a big hit for her (about a year ago). Then she released Price Tag (feat. B.o.B) worldwide, so this is the song she is most known for. Price Tag is second biggest hit in the UK this year, right behind Adele’s “Someone Like You”. After Price Tag, she continued releasing singles in the UK and videos, but not in the USA. USA got “Domino”, which is a new track from a re-release. Domino was written by Claude Kelly and produced by Dr Luke. It’s climbing US CHR radio right now. Her current single in the UK is “Who You Are” from the original album release. She also collaborated with David Guetta (for his album (Repeat) and for her re-release (LaserLight) and James Morrison (“Up”, which is second single from his album).
She will be a coach on British “The Voice”.

There is no such thing as falling back on movies. If Jen doesn’t make movies that puts butts in the seats, she won’t continue working as an actress. In the music industry, until she has her Breakaway, or has the single sales that Kelly has amassed over almost a decade, there is no comparison. Kelly also is a songwriter, so there’s that too.

  • Tess

but jennifer can always fall back on movies.

Jennifer has had ONE success as an Actor and that was based on her look and her likeness to the character.  Since then she hasn’t even made a blip on the movie scene.  In fact her biggest role will probably NEVER get National distribution and her current role is in a movie that is beyond silly and won’t be seen by peeps who are into “Acting”.

I think it is “great” that Jenn changed herself physically and I am glad that she is happy in her new body…but I don’t think it was a smart move based on her Movie career.  There are just too many really good Actors out there with the same “look” that leave Jenn in the dust…just like I think there are a lot of great “diva” singers to whom she really pales in comparison.  Without her Weight Watchers career I trully feel that Jenn would have faded into the abyss once the “Dream Girls” era was history…and I still think she is headed there.

  • dreyraglin

Jennifer has had more than one success in film Tess but since your obviously not a fan I don’t expect you to follow her. But Secret Life of Bees, Sex and the City, and now the 3 Stoogoes coming up. Jennifer has achieved success without the help of weight watchers. That’s not needed to keep her relevant. Saying her career isn’t going anywhere with what she has achieved Abd what she is continuing to achieve is more than far fetched to say. Her music may not be the most popular when comparing to other idol winners and lets remember she didn’t even win so to have the stardom she has as a non winner is a success itself. A new book in the new year and another confirmed movie role with Alicia Keys in the work her career isn’t slowing down And she is not fading. Your constant stabs at her so called “failing” and “fading” career never have held up to the facts

I watched the whole thing. You are right, it was a bit of a mess. Heh

But Chain of Fools was great as was Kelly’s solo song, Jill Scott rocked it, The Roots did “You Got Me” (awesome song), Boys II Men showed up… there were lots of good moments.

That Amy Winehouse tribute however? Hot garbage. LOL

I watched this last night and I agree some of the performances were a hot mess.

Kelly: I didn’t watch the first season of AI and I never had an opinion of her one way or the other. But I was impressed by her performance. She really has a soulful voice and I like her performance of the new single. I’ll probably buy it.

Ledisi: That woman can BLOW! I liked the duet with Kelly and the one with Marsha Ambrosius. For some reason, I’ve never heard her perform live before until recently. Yeah, I will be buying her album.

Jill Scott: I’ve always loved Jill. She is one of the few artist who I will buy their music no matter what. I thought her solo performance was beautiful. FYI, here if the official music video of “Here My Call” and it is truly moving: http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=FLBM9erp93rMCsV7hqij8QUg&feature=mh_lolz

Jennifer: I thought she performed well. She has a powerful voice no doubt, but sometimes I don’t get any connection to what she is singing.

Mary J. Blige: Her live performances have always been hit or miss for me. She was ok, but I didn’t care for the song of her solo performance.

Amy Winehouse Tribute: Who in the world was that woman performing with Sharon and the Dap Kings? I missed the introduction of her but lordy, that was not good at all.

Florence Welch: I don’t get why she was there. I think she as good voice, but I wouldn’t call it soulful at all. It’s something about her live performances that are jarring to me — maybe it’s the vibrato in her voice but I didn’t any of her performances were great.

I loved Kelly’s performances, I really like her voice. But when I saw her go on stage barefoot I thought hell yeah finally she’s gona rock it and jump around and bring people to jump too, but she didn’t, WHY?!!!

  • Anonymous

Possibly because she twisted her ankle earlier?

  • Anonymous

Kelly sprained her ankle minutes before the show was taped. She could hardly walk, let alone jump.

Thanks for posting this. I wanted to catch Kelly but forgot this was on. Kelly is always smiling in her performances. That was one of the reasons why she won. Jennifer needs to check her ‘tude, but her ‘tude is what got her the Oscar… she played herself basically and the Oscar voters thought it was great acting. Nothing has changed, she was emitting the ‘tude in that opening number. IMO.

In fact, I bet she has a bigger ‘tude since her days on AI, because she has an Oscar, does movies, lost weight and has millions.
