Usher will be mentoring the Top 10 on Tuesday (8/7c FOX) as the kids take on R&B/soul songs.  He’ll return on Wednesday (9/8c FOX) to perform his new single, “OMG”.   Also set to perform–Diddy & Dirty Money will be on hand to perform their single, “Hello, Good morning”

If that isn’t enough, I’m hearing that Justin Bieber will also be performing on Wednesday. At least, that’s what the Idol ticket invitation sent out to peeps on the audience waiting list says.

There is a chance that Bieber is taping a performance for later broadcast, but I think it’s safe to bet that The Fetus will be gracing the Idol stage on Wednesday. Ha!

ETA: A twitter friend reminded me that Usher “discovered” Bieber, so expect the fetus to perform.

thnx frogcooke!

Oh goodie! Cant wait for this… *eyeroll*

As if its a big surprise fetus with hair is gonna be there at the same time as Usher… *more eyeroll*

  • itsalleternal

LOL @ the Fetus! Love you for that! :D

Seriously, there are countless others that would be much better suited for an appearance. That sounds like a desperation move more than anything.

  • will

Just as I predicted! I think it was a given that fetus would appear the same week as Usher.

I also find it amusing when they have people like Diddy as guest performers, when they would never consider rappers as contestants on the show.

  • karenw

I guess it will pull in the tween audience .. but this season just get’s worse and worse .. they’ll be having Subo on next

  • sunny2

Damn you Usher, for unleashing the fetus on the world.

I guess it will pull in the tween audience .. but this season just get’s worse and worse .. they’ll be having Subo on next

Oh gosh, please don’t give them any ideas!!!

  • itsalleternal

In my view, NO guest performer not connected to Idol has had a good performance yet. And this is SURE to continue.

If you want guests, find someone connected to Idol somehow. Susan Boyle would be acceptable IMO, but these people are not.

Uck, I don’t want to see Diddy OR the fetus, thanks. Usher is tolerable. I guess I can keep up my usual do-not-watch theme for results night. I’d tune in for past Idols that I like, but other than that…

    I can’t wait.

I am so not surprised. Fetus will join other non-idol performers who can’t sing live…
TPTB must be desperate at this point…

I probably won’t watch Wednesday for the first time in ages.

Since it is the week ahead of Easter, I would have picked Phil Stacey, Chris Sligh or Mandisa to do a guest performance.

They might have to start airing American Idol on the Disney Channel next season because they are fast driving many of the fans from the past 8 seasons away. Can’t believe ratings won’t keep dropping if they keep this up……maybe they really don’t care and they have decided the young fans are who they want.

ETA: A twitter friend reminded me that Usher “discovered” Bieber, so expect the fetus to perform.

Well not to split hairs, but actually he was discovered by his current manager Scott Braun, who introduced him to Usher who then in turn took him under his wing. Fun fact: Braun was arrested on Wednesday.

Ke$ha, then Miley, Demi, and Joe, now the Fetus?

    ARE YOU F*CKING KIDDING ME?!

    I can picture it now.

Top 9 theme is 9 Seasons of Idol, Sanjaya performs You Really Got Me and Camile performs that yellow brick road song, with the mentor being Kristy Lee Cook.
Top 8 theme is Rap week with Eminem performing and mentoring.
Top 7 is Metal week with Marilyn Manson performing and mentoring.
Top 6 is Country week with Taylor Swift performing and mentoring.
Top 5 is Movie week with James Cameron mentoring.
Top 4 is “Artists who have had major bad points in their career” week with Britney Spears mentoring and Amy Winehouse making a surprise appearance as a zombie, and suddenly we get an advertisement for Lindsay Lohan’s new movie.

    Yikes.

  • Miss Chaos

Well I am confused because The Fetus was on The View for 2 days and said that Justin Timberlake discovered him, so I guess that everyone wants to take credit for the wonderful world of the Fetus. So you go Fetus boy and show those Idols how to sing, like Miley did last week!!!!!!!

By all indications, they are really pushing for a much younger audience. There has to be a happy medium between geriatric and just out of the womb though.

I’m looking forward to Usher; P Diddy and Bieber, not at all. At least when I forget to watch it I won’t be saying, ‘Oh darn, I missed Idol.’

Or let another network pick up the real older Idol fans and start their own show building on the Idol franchise? Maybe X Factor would be best not going to Fox, but another network?

  • rayni

Idol is breaking up with me and I don’t understand why

    Me either – but it’s working :(

  • LoveDaRocker

    Here’s my theory:
Idol started as a search for unknown/unsigned singing talent. As time went on, IMHO, Idol succeeded. Nobody can deny that the top 4 or 5 contestants of every season, and even beyond that, are very talented singers. Some are fantastic (like Allison :-) ). And most have made a living out of the experience.
But lately the buying public seems not to reward talent, choosing instead style over substance. Ke$ha, Miley, and The Fetus, just to name a few, are inexplicably selling a sh*tload of albums. Much more albums than, for example, the super talented bunch out of AIS8.
I believe Idol producers understand that, due to the nature of the competition, they will never produce that type of novelty. Specifically, those novelty acts are “acquired tastes” that can’t be pushed in 10 or so 90-sec performances.
So, I believe Idol is doing the next “best” thing: trying to attract the idiotic fanbase willing to buy crap in the hopes that they can be turned into buyers of Idol music.
And thus, we get Ke$ha, Miley, Joe and Demi, The Fetus, etc …

  • monleo1705

The Fetus is performing????!!! HA! This is like all of our nightmares finally coming true! It’s official – Idol has gone off whack!

Why not get Hi-5 to perform for us too?

  • ptslittlecomment

I don’t blame Idol for booking who they are booking. These are the folks who – like it or not- are topping the charts these days. Yes, it would be nice if they gave some of the veterans of music a little air time and exposure. But who as a record in the works or even a record deal these days that would qualify? (Real question – would like to know.) And please don’t let it be SuBo! Almost all of the folks who are predicted to sell the most by HDD next week have been on Idol or are already scheduled to be there. They have the market’s attention at the moment. This translates into better ratings for the show, which TPTB want regardless of X-Factor, current charts, etc. It is a business afterall.

  • itsalleternal

I would prefer to keep to acts connected to Idol in some way. That can be one of the following:

    1) Formerly shown on Idol

    2) Formerly auditioned on Idol, failed there but made it big anyway

    3) Connected via management or other shows (i.e. Susan Boyle)

    4) Appeared on a foreign version of Idol or its successors

  • LoveDaRocker

How’s this for a theme show: former Idol’s music.
Have a few former idols mentor.
Have s few former idols perform in the results show.
That would be quite a week!

  • DarkGlamour17

i’m surprised they’re not letting Usher and the Beaver mentor together.

  • ptslittlecomment

I would prefer to keep to acts connected to Idol in some way.

Carly and We Are the Fallen? Jason Castro? would be nice, but, again, I don’t think they would be ratings grabbers. Daughtry and Carrie they will save until later in the game if they are to appear this season.

They could hardly get Kelly Clarkson to come back for the big celebration they had at Disney. I doubt she will ever come back for the show. But she would be my top Idol choice to mentor.

  • JudyL

This translates into better ratings for the show, which TPTB want regardless of X-Factor, current charts, etc.

You make good points in your post but I think we need to wait and see if the decision Idol has apparently made is going to result in better ratings, etc. I don’t think it has so far. Some of us die-hards are still hanging in there but who knows for how long. And they are getting some brutal reviews in the press. I think the other networks are probably already planning ahead to next year and will air strong competition opposite Idol. This has not been true in the past and has give Idol a huge advantage.

  • itsalleternal

Ratings are much lower now than they were with such similar guest judges in previous seasons anyway, so their plan is obviously not working. It is driving away as many viewers as it is gaining.

  • ptslittlecomment

Ratings are much lower now than they were with such similar guest judges in previous seasons anyway, so their plan is obviously not working. It is driving away as many viewers as it is gaining.

Well then I’m confused, because there is an article in today’s LA Times that says the ratings are holding steady and actually improving a little. Yes, they are down an average of 2 percent from last year, but that is a small enough decrease that it needs to be compared against the viewing patterns of TV watchers as a whole, not just AI.

In my own experience last year, AI gained a whole new demographic – those folks who were watching ONLY because of Adam Lambert. I knew many people – some who loved him, some who loathed him – who watched AI for the first time last year because of him. Although some tried to find someone in early rounds they could root for, not one of the people who I know that watched because of Adam are still watching this season. I tuned in the first time because of David Cook in S7 and continued to watch because of Adam, Allison and Kris last year. But I totally understand that mindset. I haven’t watched a live performance so far this season.

Until a cast member – not a guest performer – on the show compells folks to watch week after week TPTB have to try to get the big names on the show in order to get an audience. The problem is, there doesn’t seem to be anyone on the show this season that inspires such passion, or even more than a passing interest.

  • ptslittlecomment

And I messed up the block quote above! The second quote contains my thoughts!

  • smeggingnuts

Instead of having former idols perform on the results show let’s just have the contestance pick a former idols name out of a hat and have them sing the song that the S9 kids would have instead.

  • larc

Yup, and Tim Urban will probably sound like Stevie Wonder next to Bieber.

At least Tim won’t sound like a little girl. ;)

  • dancingqueen

No doubt that Bieber would be there. He’s Usher’s protege – both Timberlake & Usher wanted to sign him, Usher & Scooter Braun did.

I’m not a fan of The Fetus, but, I can listen to him, before any of the 3 on last week or that Swift girl.

Diddy’s song is more dance club, than rap.

I find it hilarious that Bieber’s on, after neither Katie or Aaron seemed to give a hoot about him when asked by Ryan. Maybe, that’s why he’s Memorex, instead of live.

  • Kitwana

I think having the Disney kids last week and Justin Bieber this week is a great decision by AI. I think I have said this before but I suspect that the show has lost the tween viewer in the same way they earlier lost the teen viewer and the 20 something viewer. In years past, you could always count on the Idol winner or runner up being plastered on the teen/tween mags for several months after the end of the season. From what I have seen, this did not happen for Season 8. It is less likely to happen for this Season. We are assuming that Aaron Kelly is popular among tweens but it could be equally the case that he is being supported by grandmas and country fans. Same with Tim Urban. Is it tweens or its in cougars?

  • jammasta

I don’t think I’d have as much problem with Ke$ha, the Disney triplets, and Fetus if they weren’t all done consecutively.

I kinda like the idea of having some connection to Idol, but I don’t want them to be exclusive. I wouldn’t mind We Are The Fallen and Jason Castro performing. Didn’t Adam Lambert also say he has an Idol appearance in the works? They should also get in Ryan Tedder’s face and have Already Gone/Halo mash-up done live by Beyonce and Kelly Clarkson. Hell, have the Glee kids up to remind us that Glee is coming back (I know they’re not Idol-related >_>).

But lately the buying public seems not to reward talent, choosing instead style over substance. Ke$ha, Miley, and The Fetus, just to name a few, are inexplicably selling a sh*tload of albums. Much more albums than, for example, the super talented bunch out of AIS8.

I don’t get it either, and it’s causing the death of music. The biggest example of this “style over substance world” is, IMO, Stefani Germanotta evolving into Lady GaGa. I find it really depressing that she went from songs like Captivated to songs like Poker Face. Most people like her antics, but I just find them totally depressing when I think about her “Stefani” side. I’m hoping Crystal Bowersox and Siobhan Magnus don’t fall into the trap she fell in. Once again, that’s just my opinion (I’m not trying to start a debate on Lady GaGa).

  • dv

I like when they bring back past Idols. With it being R&B week shame Ruben couldn’t get a performance slot.

Also in a few weeks i wouldn’t be surprised if we heard rumors of Kelly performing.

Wednesday show sounds terrible. I use to love Usher but his new music is really bad.

  • gangreen29

Exactly, Justin Bieber is big right now, OF COURSE they are going to try and book him. I don’t understand all this wailing and gnashing of teeth about a three minute guest appearance from someone who is about to sell in his first week of his new CD the same amount that the latest idol winner has sold in the 4 months his album has been out.

  • Willis

Part of me thinks this is entirely on purpose by the producers to try and shift Idol to more of a younger demographic. Many Idol fans have watched Idol religiously for years (me included). As the show gets older, as does the fan base. They’re attempting to gear the show to an audience that buys and listens to popular music. But, really they’re just having guests that are putting out current singles, and not counting the Country market (which they still have occasionally), that primarily leaves Tween, R&B and Rap.

The producers know far much about the viewing and voting demographics than us and I think they’re a bit scared. They want to appear current and relevant. Problem is I don’t think the core audience IS current or relevant when it comes to music, with so many complaints about “awful music these days” filling many blogs. This years group isn’t helping with their dated song choices, save a few. The heavy pimping that a girl is going to win this year is (IMO) in response to the amount of votes that the male contestants get v. the female. They know the crazy female fan bases love their male contestants. And a male will win again this year. WGWG – most likely. Expect a lot a depimping and producer trickery later on to out some of the males. It won’t work. Lee, Casey, maybe even Aaron, will hold the golden microphone come May.

  • newshound61

All this pandering to the musical flavor of the week just shows how desperate AI truly is.
The contestants used to perform the songs by the mentor, think Dolly Parton, Diana Ross, Gwen Stefani or Mariah Carey, or at least music that was connected to the mentor like country music and Randy Travis, or Smokey Robinson and Motown.
Now AI finds an artist that has a CD or movie coming out, makes them a “mentor” and matches them with some random category (top billboard hits), so they can hawk their wares on TV. And next week, the guests have absolutely nothing to do with the category, just like last year’s showcasing of Lady Gaga and Katy Perry.
The folks at AI are delusional if they think putting Justin Bieber on the show is going to draw viewers for more than a few minutes. Why not give out the results in the first five minutes and allot the rest of the hours to pimping out the latest “singers”? They certainly aren’t pulling in viewers with the elimination results. Why the pretense?
I watch the show now mostly to see just how low they’re willing to sink in the pursuit of the almighty Nielsen rating.

  • ggdoorsfan

maybe they really don’t care and they have decided the young fans are who they want.

bingo! shows like idol and advertisers want to target that end of the market/viewing audience to move product, and drive revenue. the 18-49 is the most desired demographic for this business model, that has been no secret for years, so idol aggressively trying to court that audience should really come as no shock. i’m just surprised it’s taken them this long to make their desires really known, lol. they’re going to try and shift idol from ”cougar town” to ”the young and the restless”, looks like come heck or high water, and the gradual loss of viewers in the demographic that falls outside of the 18-49 ”gold standard”. ”shrugs”, whatever. there was life before idol, there will be life after it.

  • KayGee

Usher isn’t my favorite R&B star, but he has had some pretty good music in the past decade (grant it, not all of his music pleases me), plus he is somebody “I” can identify with being that he is (was) R&B. I for one don’t know half of the songs these people sing from week to week, so I can only go by their vocals for that particular show. (I have to say that I heard a song that Paige sung while shopping at Penney’s, while Simon is favored for saying that the contestant sound like elevator music, I thought that was ironic, that the music they choose from can be found in an department store).

I also want to say that the song choices for the R&B week are so lame and are the same songs that have been used for the past 8 seasons, and I am sure that the contestants will choose the same tired songs that have been chosen in years past. It would be nice if they CHOOSE SONGS that are on the list that NOBODY HAS COVERED before!!!

  • gangreen29

or at least music that was connected to the mentor like country music and Randy Travis, or Smokey Robinson and Motown.

Or like having Usher for R&B week?!?? This all strikes me as whining for whining sake, idol has always had crappy guest performers.

  • baddabing

    contrived….all so contrived.

  • Cari

I so wish I could go to the show on Tuesday! It’s the perfect timing for me, and I think seeing the R&B week would be fun :D

  • rk349097

Uh-oh…someone better get a restraining order against Seacrest.

Seriously, if the past two weeks haven’t been a sign that the Idol producers are trying to steer this show into a decidedly tween-centric direction, then nothing is. I’ve been saying this for weeks now, but I’ll reiterate it: either Katie or Aaron is going to end up winning this show this year. The producers just won’t have it any other way. They’ve been trying to tap in to the Disney pop market for years now, and they’re going to finally get their way. Those of us over the age of 16 may not like this, but, at the end of the day, the Idol producers are going to do what is best for the only thing that matters: the bottom line.

  • MaryS-NJ

If they want a younger demographic, or a more “current” feel, the the PTB should be shelling out some bucks to pay for the rights for more current songs that would help. Of course this is speculation, but based on the tired, overdone and old song choices on these lists and comments from some of the contestants that their requests for clearance of more current songs are ignored or discouraged (i.e.: Alex and Lilly), I have to conclude that they don’t care that much about what is truly current coming out of the mouths of the contestants, or they’re hoping that the contestants will magically take a stuck-in-the-60s/70s/80s song and transform it into something fresh.

Truthfully, David Cook, Kris Allen, Chris Daughtry and very few others managed to do that but there’s only so many times and so many ways to remake and old song without it sounding weird and forced (Lilly’s cover of I Fall To Pieces). Maybe it’s cheaper to manipulate the ratings short term by having special guest mentors/performers instead.

It would be nice if they CHOOSE SONGS that are on the list that NOBODY HAS COVERED before!!!

    THIS.

Casey made a rookie mistake this season by picking a done-to-death song and getting criticized for it (I Don’t Wanna Be). Since then, everything he’s sung has been never previously been covered on Idol. Of course, I thought picking Huey Lewis was a strange choice but compared with some of the other choices th is week, maybe the pickings were slim on the song list.

Katelyn sang Coldplay. Siobahn sang Wicked Love. I think Andrew and Lee have chosen songs are haven’t been done before on Idol and are also more current. It worked better for Lee than for Andrew.

On the other hand, Lilly chose Fixin a Hole which isn’t current but was fresh by Idol standards. Crystal sang that CCR song, gospel style. These were older songs that had never been done before on Idol and that works too.

  • dejd

The logical progression from this week’s mentor would be for Fetus to mentor by himself.

Then Casey could go “I’m a big fan … of your grandpa”.

  • AnninSD

I still think idol is on some level trying to have guests on that sing on the same level or worse than the contestents to make the contestants look good. (Wait for Adam’s appearance – he will put them all to shame)
regardless of the reasons for the guests/mentors (same label, owned by 19, etc) the flavor of the month – can’t sing but sells records – anyone can make it with the right packaging – 19E presents your next American Idol…

  • Portia11

Pop stars being totally unable to sing is not new, just annoying to have the worst of them (and therefore the most popular?) on a show supposedly about being able to actually uh…..you know… sing.
It is a shame the producers didn’t at least try having former idols on the show, as mentors or performers. Bye Bye AI.

  • weese

Why isn’t AI spending the off season expanding their playlist? That would be the time to get rights to as many viable songs as possible. Many of the genius remakes of songs were not done first by AI contestants. Adam, Kris and Andrew Garcia’s moments can be found elsewhere as can some but not all of David Cooks. Contestants should scour the internet before they come on the show for alternate versions of songs.

  • newshound61

Or like having Usher for R&B week?!?? This all strikes me as whining for whining sake, idol has always had crappy guest performers.

You’re making my point for me. How in the heck is Usher R&B? He’s 100 percent pop. He’s about as R&B as Michael Jackson was. They slapped that designation on him because he’s black. He’s got a new CD coming out, March 30, called Raymond v Raymond and they want to promo it, so they hooked him up with a convenient category since Miley already took the top Billboard hits and Motown was last year.
If you want to hear some real R&B, listen to Otis Redding. He’s probably spinning in his grave to be associated with the likes of Diddy and Justin Bieber. I’m interested in hearing what a 12-year-old knows about the blues. Or Usher for that matter.
I don’t care if the guests are crappy (like last year’s disco group) as long as the music is related to the theme. After all, isn’t the show supposed to be about the contestants, not the musical guests? Apparently not since the contestants are no longer enuf of a nielsen draw.

Have you ever even listened to an Usher CD? He most certainly is R&B, even if his more pop songs are the ones sent to radio. Sorry, but R&B music didn’t stop in the 60s.

After all, isn’t the show supposed to be about the contestants, not the musical guests? Apparently not since the contestants are no longer enuf of a nielsen draw.

It is an hour long show, they need to fill it with guest performers. Have people completely lost their memories, why are they acting like this is a new phenomenon when it has been going on for years?

I see Week Three of Teenage Idol continues. This is the third week in a row that some of the viewing audience over 40 years won’t be watching. They will probably tune in for the last 7 minutes.

I had hoped we would see some real SOUL and R & B performances, but Idol simply does not care any more.

  • CRB

    Siobahn sang Wicked Love.

Siohban actually sang Wicked Game but I did LOVE it so half credit there.

Don’t they have idols on idol anymore? Maybe just thé idols still under the Sony bmg umbrella? Or just the idols manger by 19r?

  • renataamelo

ohh God I guess they trying to keep the pattern… bad singing from the contestants and bad singing from the musical guests as well.. Kesha, Miley, Fetus… who´s next?

  • dejd

    Taylor Swift?

  • Oksana2000

    Selena Gomez?
I checked I-tunes top 100. So far we had on Idol almost everybody, with the exception of Beyonce.
How about performance by Pink? What, a girl can’t dream??

The demographics on forums and blogs tend to be younger. Yes, 60-70 year-old Grandmas watch the show but don’t get on the Internet. Personally, I loved having Lulu & Peter Noone, Rod Stewart, Dolly Parton, etc. as Guest Mentors who then sang on Results Night.

Three weeks in a row of lousy guest singers. What next?

How do we know TPTB even look at the votes? How do we know they haven’t scripted the whole season?

The contestants used to perform the songs by the mentor, think Dolly Parton, Diana Ross, Gwen Stefani or Mariah Carey, or at least music that was connected to the mentor like country music and Randy Travis, or Smokey Robinson and Motown.

And every single one of them had a CD, single or cause to promote when they appeared on AI, just like Usher does now.

Seems to me last year S8 had better mentors, or more experienced ones e.g smokey and Randy Travis and I can’t remember who else BUT i do remember the guest performances being more authentic and powerpacked – Stevie wonder, kanye west, daughtry, Carrie.. Just seems this season it’s more about the current charts.

I bet people like Casey and Crystal would give anything to have Mentors like Randy Travis or Whitney Houston instead.

Like Miley Cyrus, Flo Rida, and Jamie Foxx? Again, it just seems like selective memory…

Yes I am sure they would appreciate someone like Randy Travis or Whitney before her reputation took a nosedive. But I am sure they will appreciate what Usher has to give them too. Afterall he competed on Star Search so he has some experience with the type of competiton they are undergoing; he has sold over 40 million albums worldwide and won five grammys. Billboard continually ranks him and his CD’s high in their various charts.
Criticism of Miley mentoring I understood, but I think Usher actually might have some experiences that might be beneficial to the contestants.

If the demographic is 18 – 49, I would like to know how many in that age range listen to and buy Miley Cyrus, the Jonas Bros, Demi Lovato, and Justin Bieber. If the goal to make the children of that age range DEMAND that their parents switch the channel to AI, then I get it.

I have an Usher album (I’m slightly older than the demographic) and I definitely consider him R&B.

The mention above of Otis Redding makes me want to hear Crystal do ‘Sitting On the Dock of the Bay’. She said she’s going sans guitar and that definitely works.

D’oh! Of course she did… that was my brainfart – lol! And I loved it too.

I watch the show with my younger kids ranging in ages from 5-13. My college aged sons used to watch AI, but got bored with it and think it is rigged and that none of the artists from AI make it because they aren’t good songwriters and their first album is rushed. I like having the younger artists on sometimes because my kids seem to enjoy them, plus their music is kind of safe usually for my kids that are under 10.

They know the crazy female fan bases love their male contestants. And a male will win again this year. WGWG – most likely. Expect a lot a depimping and producer trickery later on to out some of the males. It won’t work. Lee, Casey, maybe even Aaron, will hold the golden microphone come May.

See I’d like to believe that there are a lot of DC and KA fans that simply know good music when they hear it, and realize there are contestants that, once they are off the show, are going to make good music. Therefore, I’d like to believe that a lot of their fans see this in Crystal and are voting for her as a result. Maybe Siobhan as well.

I’m older (top part of the 18-49 demo) and think Casey’s pretty darned good-looking, but his music hasn’t stood out to me so I’m not sending votes his way. Actually, of the three you have named, I see the greatest potential in Aaron. I’ve thrown votes his way some because I want him to stay, but I ultimately want Crystal or Siobhan to win, if they continue doing as they’re doing.

ETA: Kate8 I’m with you, I don’t mind Justin Beiber being on for my daughter’s sake.
