Usher Posts a Message of Support for Justin Bieber

Usher speaks! The latest Justin Bieber controversy, involves two videos that leaked one after the other of the singer using the N word. In the first, 15 year old Justin tells a dumb joke. In the other video, shot the year before. Justin turns one of his own hit songs into a tune about the KKK.

Justin quickly apologized for both (although, most would agree, the second video was much worse than the first) and there are reports that both videos have been floating around for years, with gossip sites like TMZ using the videos to “extort” Justin for access.

Now, Justin’s “mentor,” Usher, has come to his defence. As a caption to a photo posted to instagram, the singer/producer/songwriter and The Voice coach writes:

At my core, I am a person that supports growth and understands without judgement, that growth often comes as a result of pain and continues effort. As I have watched Justin Bieber navigate difficult waters as a young man, I can tell you that he hasn’t always chosen the path of his greatest potential, but he is unequivocally not a racist. What he was 5 years ago was a naive child who did not understand the negative power and degradation that comes from playing with racial slurs. What he is now is a young man faced with an opportunity to become his best self, an example to the millions of kids that follow him to not make the same mistakes.

To be honest, I’m not convinced Justin is a racist.  Middle school boys can be especially immature. Using language for shock value isn’t an uncommon tactic used by boys of that age.

However, I’m fairly convinced that Justin is a dumb ass, and don’t expect this to be the end of his entertaining controversies.  He’s just the gift that keeps on giving!

This is as neutral and classy as it gets.
Really good statement on Usher’s end imo
Don’t think Bieber’s a racist either, that didn’t come across that way to me either. Otherwise I’d be demanding a whooole lot of white boys at my old highschool be labeled this too.
Just jokes, stupid jokes to tell to their friends because teenagers are spawns of hell…minors are spawns of hell.
It’ll brush over, this is hardly a big deal to me anymore really.

I’m sure there are people who’d love to beat him up about this racist thing from years ago, but I can’t bring myself to believe the kid honestly thinks those jokes are cool now…isn’t half his entourage black anyways? Cmon people

  • Holden17C

I’m not convinced Bieber is a diehard racist either. That would require thought and deliberation on the matter of race. He’s way too stupid for that.

Why does nobody ask Usher why, as a Black man, he chose to continue working with a person who made at least two racist videos (with likely more to be released soon)? We’re not talking about a one off, lapse in judgment here. We’re talking about multiple videos. We’re not talking about a 12 year old but a 15 year old. We’re not talking about a use of the N word in passing while drunk or stoned but a planned and thought out joke with multiple uses of the N word. Why not ask Usher? Because the answer makes Usher worse than Justin.

  • Kimmy Moores

As a black woman, I don’t really understand why his race is being used to get your point across any further.
While I am not sure whether Usher was aware of these videos prior to, or if Usher is even working with Justin like he used to.
Him being black and Justin using the N word is besides the point really if you’re questioning why he’d continue to work with him. Black/White/Asian/Russian/Spanish/etc. it should be about why he’d continue to work with someone who’s been caught on camera multiple times using racial slurs in general.
So if Usher is working with him still (I doubt it’s even remotely as much as it used to be) I’d assume it’s because he really doesn’t care about what he’ll look like to anyone else. He’s the one who knows the boy the best so it’s his decision and it certainly isn’t an obligation for him to stop.

I wish this would all just go away. Justin is a douche bag with no education, no self control, and little or no regard for ANYONE but himself. He’s ignorant, narcissistic, on the downside of the IQ ladder, self-grandizing, and has no more talent than any other high school you tube junkie. But, he has a great PR person who keeps him in the daily news cycles…wonder if momma Kardashian is on his payroll. As for Usher, he should just keep his mouth shut since he doesn’t seem to be the best judge of character.

  • RCormier

“As a black woman, I don’t really understand why his race is being used to get your point across any further.”

Because he used the “N” word.

There was another article — I think it’s linked somewhere on MJ’s, but I just got home from a long day in the sun and am too lazy to find it — that stated that back when Bieber actually did this stuff, Usher had taken him aside and given him a lot of education on race relations and generally sobered him up on this issue. So I’d guess Usher continued to work with Bieber because he felt that the matter was thoroughly dealt with.

If Usher could work the same magic re: speeding, egging houses, harassing airline staff, and other forms of douchebaggery, then we’d have something.

  • RCormier

I remember that post. If you were Usher and Justin continued to make racist jokes after you educated him on race relations, what would you do?

  • Kimmy Moores

Well now that the obvious is out of the way we can talk about why you seem to think it should matter more simply because Usher is black.

If anything your question should be why would Usher, regardless of race, continue to work with someone who has been caught on video using a racial slur in general. It makes you sound as though you’re less inclined to target Usher had Bieber used a term racist against any ethnicity other than Black.

My friend, it’s 2014, not some time period before the 80’s. Black people aren’t so sensitive to the term anymore. Personally when I heard about it I didn’t even bat an eyelid, flare a nostril, nothing. Hell, a lot of my friends who’re black (various ages, young and old) had a good laugh out of the situation. They weren’t offended at all, just thought he was an idiot and nothing more.

It’s not like we spend our time being offended by every use of the term, especially the younger black generation. We dealt with the crap in school, we tend to focus on the intent behind the word.

    Those videos? Don’t offend me.

This? This offends me, watch this.

  • Eilonwy_has_an_emu

My understanding of what happened is that all of the racist events were before Usher dealt with Bieber. Maybe I’m wrong… if so, spanking the little brat works for me.

  • lkingcorn

Agree Bieber is not racist. His best friends are black. I’m not sure it’s fair to,hold this against a 14 year old.. It might however give him a wake up call to get it together.

  • Tess Herself

best friends? oh you mean those dirt bags who live off of Bieber’s income and don’t seem to do much but play at being an entourage and quite possibly supply him all the goodies to party.

IMO Bieber is not a racist in the true sense where he hates them with a passion like the KKK or the skin head types. But I do believe he has stereotype/bigot views. We all do to some degree. That’s why Bieber said what he said on those videos. How many times not on video has he made those kind of jokes or sing like that? Likely too many times.

For those of you who think, well he was a 14 or 15 kid, give him a pass/break. So now we are going to excuse every 14, 15 year old who makes a racist remark?

Instead of posting Bible verses, statements released by his PR people, or a few choice words from your manager or a post from Usher explaining his support and fine and dandy things… Bieber should come out with a video (like Daughtry) with an apology from the heart and not reading a statement of apology from his people. That’s why Bieber is making mistakes after mistakes.. just post a Bible verse or release a heart felt statement that’s obviously not worded by him.

  • Guest

What Ursher posted is total BS and any white person knows that. The kid wouldn’t have said those things and thought they were funny if he hadn’t been raised with a negative attitude towards black people. He may have changed his tune now, but in his core he feels it. IMHO.

  • RCormier

“My friend, it’s 2014, not some time period before the 80’s. Black people aren’t so sensitive to the term anymore.”

Sorry, I was not aware that you spoke for the Black people of America.

  • Kimmy Moores

Sorry, I wasn’t aware that we were obligated to round up the minutemen over “such a fiasco”.

Brazilian man gets 10 plastic surgery procedures to look Asian (Korean). Even changing his name to Xiahn Nishi. Because he loves their culture and K-pop music. Really?

I have the perfect idea for Bieber. Since he dresses, acts, and hangs out with the black rappers. He should get plastic surgery to turn himself into a black man… lol

  • Dianne

That may be true, but it’s a two way street, he uses them to give himself street cred. Earning millions at an early age is not good for children, the kid thinks everything can be bought and sold.

  • Dianne

Well, the Jesus tatoo on his leg makes everything alright, doesn’t? And when his career peters out he can join the carnival. So, yay!

  • vd88

So Usher should quit all ties with him because of what he said when he was 15. Listen when your young with friends your going to say dumb stuff thinking everything is a joke. Unlike all of us, Usher actually knows Justin Bieber and do you see how many black ppl Justin surrounds himself with. You can’t be racist when your whole damn entourage is black.

Bottom line at that age your going to say stupid ignorant things just making fun of everything. When I was younger a white boy in my class was trying to be funny and said the n word. I didn’t take offense to it because we were kids, just hopefully as ppl get older they know not to do stuff like this. If a video surfaces of Justin doing this now, then you can get on Usher.

  • abbysee

I agree with you. I don’t think he’s racist. I think he’s an asshat, immature, and entitled. I don’t think that will change.

  • usedtobelucy

    Protecting his investment. Dumbass(es).

  • usedtobelucy

No, I don’t think you cut ties. I think you tell him privately that you’re really glad that he’s grown up enough now to know that that crap is wrong.

But you don’t make a public statement of defense because a public statement of defense tells a whole lot of other dumbasses out there that the crap is 100 percent acceptable — because the dumbasses who are observing this would not pick up on subtleties, and want any excuse they can get to continue being jerks a la the JB video. (anybody watch Big Brother lately? seriously)

  • weareallinnocent

I agree, dumbass through and through. He also is plain ol’ dumb, which may be incurable. We’ll see, whether we want to or not.

  • weareallinnocent

Because sadly, our country is full of racists. People of color don’t (yet) have the luxury to refuse to work with racists. That’s the sad reality of the country we live in.

But, more to the point, Usher said that, in his experience, Justin is not a racist. So, there’s that.

  • Jazzyjen508

Agree with you 100 percent!!!! I highly doubt he is actually racist. he does alot of stupid things not realizing their full reprucussions. He is definitely a dumbass.
